There's no better way to admire the stunning Seattle waterfront than from a boat. A variety of boat tours – from kid-friendly sightseeing cruises to romantic sunset sails – allow visitors to take in all the sights while enjoying a fresh sea breeze. Relying on expert input and traveler sentiment, U.S. News compiled four of the best Seattle boat tours.

Argosy Cruises – Locks Cruise

Price: Adults from $54; kids from $25 Duration: 2 hours

Enjoy the unique experience of passing through the Ballard Locks on this two-hour, one-way cruise. As you transition from the freshwater of Lake Union to the saltwater of Puget Sound, you'll hear live narration about Seattle's history and maritime industry from an onboard guide. Along the way, you'll pass some of the Emerald City's top sights, including the Space Needle , Olympic Sculpture Park and Gas Works Park, among others. Note that the cruise is one way, meaning it ends at a different location than it starts. You'll be dropped off at Pier 54 on the Seattle waterfront or AGC Marina on Lake Union. You can choose where you'd like to depart from when you book your tickets. You can also pay extra for bus transportation back to your starting point. Reviewers applaud the onboard guides, praising their knowledge of the region and their eagerness to answer questions and point out landmarks. Travelers were also pleased with the comfortable, clean boat. Some recommended avoiding the return bus service describing it as inconvenient, and instead suggested opting for your own transportation.

Tickets start at $54 for adults and $25 for kids ages 4 to 12 (children 3 and younger ride for free). Tour schedules vary depending on date and time of year; in the summer months, you can expect tours to be offered twice a day at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. Argosy Cruises also offers harbor sightseeing tours.

Sailing Seattle – Sunset Sail

Price: Adults from $62; kids from $49 Duration: 2 hours

Head out for a two-hour sail on a custom 70-foot yacht to admire the downtown Seattle skyline as the sun sets. Described by reviewers as "peaceful" and a "must-do," this laid-back cruise does not include a guided commentary and does not follow a set route – the tour's course is dictated by wind direction and boat traffic on Elliott Bay. Visitors are allowed to bring any food or beverages they want on board (though glassware is prohibited, glass bottles are OK). The crew also recommends bringing a jacket or sweater in case it gets chilly – a suggestion echoed by reviewers. A word to the wise: Since the yachts were built for racing, bench seating is limited, and visitors might have to sit on the deck.  

Tours are offered late April through early October. The exact sailing schedule varies by the day and month. Tickets start at $62 for adults and $49 for children ages 5 to 12. The company also operates daytime sails in the waters surrounding the city, as well as a two-hour sail on Puget Sound.

Canderé Cruising – One Hour Sightseeing Cruise

Price: From $50 Duration: 1 hour

Board a six-person vessel for an intimate outing with Candére Cruising on its one-hour sightseeing cruise, where the captain also doubles as the bartender. On this quick trip around Lake Union, passengers will see famous sights like the Space Needle, the Fremont Bridge, a variety of boats and yachts, and may even spot seaplanes taking off and landing, all while enjoying a cocktail (or mocktail). Travelers say the trip is relaxing and lots of fun, even for locals. Another highlight is seeing the houseboat featured in "Sleepless in Seattle."

Tickets start at $50 and include one drink. The one-hour cruise is offered eight times a day, though exact availability may vary by day. Candére Cruising also offers private outings, sunset cruises and day sails on Puget Sound.

Seattle's Tall Ship – Seattle Harbor Sailing Tour

Price: Adults from $45; kids from $35 Duration: 2 hours

Climb aboard the Bay Lady, an 85-foot tall ship, for a family-friendly sail around the Puget Sound. Departing from Bell Harbor Marina at Pier 66, this two-hour tour promises views of the Space Needle, Smith Tower and the city skyline. If you're lucky, you may spot harbor seals, depending on the time of year. In addition to two restrooms, the boat is equipped with an onboard bar. Travelers praise the attentive, friendly crew and the beautiful boat. They also say the views of Seattle and the sound are amazing.

The company sails daily, though exact times vary by day. The sailing season runs from the end of April to the end of October. Tickets start at $45 for adults and $35 for kids ages 2 to 12. Any purchases made on board cost extra. Seattle's Tall Ship also offers a sunset sail, in addition to private charters.

With a unique fleet where every boat is different, Boat Tours of Seattle i s spearheaded by a group of United States Coast Guard Captains who are dedicated to using their skills to provide some of the safest and most enjoyable experiences on the water. From 2 hour tours to overnight adventures, Boat Tours Seattle is one of the most unique boat tours available in Seattle.

Each boat has its own special features and pricing. From smaller motor boats to full-blown sail boats, passengers can pick and choose their type of tour and the setting. Featured in National Geographic, Conde Nast Traveler , Trip Advisor, and more, Sailing Seattle is a sailing-themed boat tour company that allows passengers to enjoy a sailing experience without having to steer or be involved in a guided tour. Hop aboard one of their two 70-foot sailing yachts and enjoy the views without any worries. Each boat is complete with a seating area on the deck, bench seating, and restrooms that guests can utilize while they explore Elliott Bay.

Sailing Seattle is an all-ages experience, including children and infants. Guests are welcome to bring their own food and drinks as well, including alcohol. Passengers can even learn to help sail the boat by simply asking the deckhand or captain, who will then provide instructions. Each route aboard one of their yachts is unique as their routes are determined by wind direction and boat traffic that day. 

4. Seattle’s Tall Ship

Offering 3 public sailing tours every day, Seattle’s Tall Ship runs all of its tours aboard the Bay Lady, an 85-foot tall sailing ship that currently resides in Elliott Bay. The ship is equipped with bathrooms, a drink and snack bar, and outdoor seating for guests. Apart from their daily tours, Seattle’s Tall Ship also has private charter tours and sunset sailing tours. 

Run by a skilled captain and crew, guests do not have to worry about steering when aboard the Bay Lady. Guests of all ages are welcome to enjoy one of their daily 2-hour tours or partake in an evening sunset tour complete with delicious drinks. The Bay Lady is available for reservation for private events for up to 6 hours at a time for events like weddings, corporate events, birthday parties, and much more.

5. Soundview Sunset Cruises

Here’s a great choice for boating options! Want to cruise to a University of Washington football game and “sailgate” ( that’s tailgating on a sailboat )? Well, Soundview has sailgate cruises.

They have mansion cruises, morning cruises, mid-day cruises, afternoon cruises, and much more.

Home of the yacht known as Rainbird, Soundview Sunset Cruises showcases the views, landmarks, and history of Lake Union in addition to Portage Bay, Lake Washington, and Seattle Locks. Most famous for their sunset cruise views, they also have morning, mid-day, and afternoon cruises so passengers can enjoy Seattle in all of its beautiful and scenic forms.

In addition to their daily cruises, Soundview Sunset Cruises has holiday cruises, UW sailgate cruises for sporting events, and custom cruises. They even have a boat tour showcasing some of Seattle’s gorgeous mansions. Custom tours can refine their route for specific locations or special occasions. Passengers can also add things to their tour package, such as drinks.

6. Emerald City Pirates

One of the most unique water experiences available in Seattle comes in the form of a fully interactive pirate-themed ship. Known as the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship is the home of themed boat tours of the area, treasure hunts for families, and adult only parties, all complete with pirate flags and costumed crew.

Emerald City Pirates is for all ages, even babies. Dogs under 25 pounds are also allowed on board provided they are well-behaved. All tours come with snacks, water, soft drinks, beer, and cider for sale, as well as a ship store full of hats, swords, eyepatches, and more. Passengers can join tours without reservations, but for events like birthday parties or other private boat charters, it is best to make reservations ahead of time. Party cruises can be booked for either families or adults only.

7. Waterways Cruises And Events

From dinner and drink pairing cruises to private events and holiday tours, Waterways Cruises And Events has a boat tour for every occasion. They regularly offer dinner cruises, weekend brunch cruises, and Sunday dinner buffet cruises. All of these cruises are complete with either a buffet or a plated dinner with roughly 2 hours of time on the water, making it a fabulous way to take in the views while spending time with friends or loved ones.

In addition to their regularly hosted tours, there is no shortage of special cruises throughout the year. These tours simultaneously serve as a great way for passengers to explore the local area and to learn more about maritime history. It is also a great way to keep one of the most iconic historical ships of Seattle functioning for generations to experience and enjoy.

Passengers can enjoy public cruises, educational tours, and special events aboard the Steamer Virginia V for 9 months out of the whole year. Guests can rent the ship for private charters, like weddings, parties, fundraisers, corporate events, and more, either as a dockside rental or a leisure cruise. Private charters all come with a 3-hour rent time and come with tables, seating, speakers, microphone, projector, and more. Departing from Pier 52, also known as Colman Dock, and travelling over the Puget Sound with a beautiful view of the skyline of Seattle at your rear, this trip will take you just 35 minutes to reach Bainbridge Island, Washington – the second largest city in Kitsap County.

The downtown area, Winslow, is the location of the ferry terminal here, and in fact was the original name of the entire city of Bainbridge Island – after the shipbuilder WInslow Hall.

Bainbridge Island is a beautiful city – although with a population of only 23,000 on the entire island, it’s far smaller than Seattle!

It’s a beautiful place, with several gardens and museums to visit – and of course, some beautiful natural scenery!

You can also do some interesting activities on Bainbridge Island, such as birdwatching, sea kayaking, scuba diving, and hiking – making it a great place for a mini adventure!

2.Fauntleroy To Vashon Island

Just south of West Seattle – itself separated from the rest of the city by the Duwamish River – lies the ferry terminal at Fauntleroy.

From here, you can ride a ferry to Vashon Island, which is only accessible by ferry. Vashon Island is a popular destination for cyclists, with some great riding hills.

However, they can be a tough call for some riders! Most people prefer, therefore, to experience Vashon Island by car.

You could get on the ferry on foot, but many parts of the island would just take too long to access without a car or bike!

Vashon Island is a great getaway for those looking to spend some time in a quieter, more calming place – or those looking to do some serious cycling!

Other activities are of course available here, including kayaking and scuba diving – in fact, the entire Puget Sound area is famed for having some of the best scuba diving waters in the world!

3.Anacortes To San Juan Islands

North of Seattle lies the city of Anacortes, itself a beautiful place, and a great city for boating activities, with an award winning marina.

It also has its own ferry terminus, which will let you take a trip over to the San Juan islands!

From Anacortes, you can take ferries directly to four of the islands – Shaw, Orcas, Lopez, and San Juan Island.

These are the four main islands, and are also connected to each other by Washington State Ferries. These islands are amazingly popular for boating, especially for small boats.

Many towns here are great places for boaters to visit, and indeed many of the nicest spots around these islands can only be reached by boat.

In fact, although the ferries only go to 4 islands here – the four biggest – there are actually 176 islands in the area that are large enough to be named!

4.Seattle To Bremerton

Located on the Kitsap Peninsula, Bremerton is to the southwest of Bainbridge Island, and is a great place to visit that’s not too far from the city of Seattle – meaning that it’s easily possible to have a great day trip here and still make it back for the evening!

Once in the city itself, there’s plenty to see and do – those with military interests will particularly like the Puget Sound Navy Museum!

Similarly, there’s also the USS Turner Joy, a Destroyer from the era of the Vietnam War.

Those looking for a more natural pursuit in their time in and around Bremerton will enjoy the Illahee State Park and the Green Mountain State Forest, two of the most beautiful natural environments in the area.

5.Edmonds To Kingston

Another beautiful little town across the water from Seattle, Kingston is another great place to visit in the Puget Sound region.

It’s pretty easy to get to from the Seattle area, as Washington State Ferries runs a service from West Edmonds over to Kingston.

If you like, you can walk on this ferry – there are buses and taxis available to take you around Kingston once you get there!

If you’re a birdwatcher, anywhere in Kitsap Country is a great place to visit – and of course, Kingston is no exception!

There are hundreds of species that one could see in the area – in fact, there’s a good list here !

6.Seattle To Victoria, British Columbia

If you’re looking to go a little further afar, why not go to the next country over?

It’s possible to get a ferry all the way up to Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada, in just around 3 hours!

Riding the Victoria Clipper, which completes a round trip between Seattle and Vancouver every day for much of the year, you can be in the beautiful city of Vancouver in just 2 hours and 45 minutes.

You’ll need your passport for this one, of course, and it’s one of the longer waterway journeys on the list – but a trip to Canada is well worth it!

Vancouver is an amazing city, and what’s more, it’s the gateway to the rest of British Columbia – one of the most spectacular areas of natural beauty in the world – and the size of many countries on its own!

As you can see, there are many great places that are easy to get to with just a short ferry ride from Seattle, or the surrounding area.

So if you’re looking for something new and interesting to do in the area – or just want to get away form the city for a bit – then why not try out one of these great journeys?

In late July, we traveled to Washington State and spent 5 days in Seattle before heading further south for a family reunion near  Northwest Trek Wildlife Park .

Seattle in the summer is incredible, and I was able to show Abby and Jake all of my favorite places as a kid. Some of my fondest memories are of taking the ferry with my family. So, I was excited to plan a day trip, taking the Seattle to Bainbridge Island ferry! 

It had been 15 years since I last rode this ferry; you can see the proof above. I was actually pregnant with Abby on that trip! These photos show Abby now and then.

Since it had been a while, I had a lot of questions and found myself searching for various answers while on the go. I am writing this guide to answer your frequently asked questions. Because this is a very easy and fun day trip. I would recommend it to anyone! And knowledge is power, especially when it comes to travel planning.

Seattle to Bainbridge Island Ferry Information

First things first,  where do you board the ferry,  and  how do you get tickets ? The good news is that the terminal is right there in downtown  Seattle  and an easy walk from most places, including Pike Place Market, Lumen Field, Pioneer Square, and others. 

Did you know that over 6.4 million people ride the ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island each year?

It’s a very popular route for both commuters and tourists, lasting a short 35 minutes. Most locals refer to this ferry as “the boat.” But multiple 400-foot-long  Bainbridge Island  ferries run this route, transporting almost 2 million vehicles yearly. 

This is by far the shortest and easiest ferry experience if you are staying in the downtown area. This is why Bainbridge Island makes such a great day trip from Seattle.

Seattle and Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal Locations

The Seattle Ferry Terminal, also known as Colman Dock or Pier 52, is located at 801 Alaskan Way between Marion and Columbia Streets, along the Seattle Waterfront. This terminal serves the Washington State Ferries to and from Bainbridge Island and Bremerton.

FAQ: Can I take the Seattle Ferries To Bainbridge Without A Car?

Yes! The Washington State Ferry to Bainbridge Island accommodates vehicles and pedestrians alike. 

Once you arrive at the Seattle Ferry Terminal, you can follow the signs to the vehicle loading area if traveling by vehicle. On our recent day trip to Bainbridge Island, we traveled on foot, and many commuters do it this way! 

FAQ: Where Do I Catch The Bainbridge Island Ferry On Foot?

A lot of construction is happening along the  Seattle  waterfront, and significant improvements are in store. However, for this reason, give yourself a little extra time to ensure you are in the right place. I recommend arriving 15-20 minutes before scheduled departure.

The path up to the tickets and passenger waiting areas is adjacent to the area where the cars line up. So, look for that and take the walkway up. We got our tickets at a self-service electronic ticket kiosk on the second level. I was initially worried about where to get the tickets, but it was right on the way.

Ferry Tickets to Bainbridge Island From Seattle

Each ferry can carry up to 200 cars and 2,500 passengers, so you shouldn’t have a problem being able to walk on the ferry like we did. The prices below are for one-way tickets. The return ferry trip from Bainbridge back to Seattle is free of charge. And make sure to note that kids under 18 are free. That was a wonderful surprise!

• Adults (ages 19-64): $9.45
• Seniors (ages 65+): $4.70
• Youth (ages 0-18): FREE

Everyone needs a ticket to board, so you will still have to get a free kid’s  ferry ticket  before boarding. We quickly did this at the kiosk when purchasing our 2 adult tickets. 

IMPORTANT:  I want to point out one crucial thing about the FREE kid’s tickets. They are only good for 2 hours. So, you want to wait to purchase them.

How Do You Purchase Bainbridge Island Ferry Tickets?

Tickets may be purchased at the terminal on the day of travel using cash or a card. We found the self-serve kiosks very easy to use. All passengers are loaded on a first-come, first-serve basis. 

Seattle to Bainbridge Island Ferry Schedule 

The ferry schedules vary seasonally, so it is always best to check the  Washington State Ferry Seattle to Bainbridge Island official schedule  before making any plans. 

In general, this ferry route runs every 45 minutes to an hour. Two ferries were operating when we did this Bainbridge Island day trip at the end of July. 

The Bainbridge Island ferries typically run over 20 times each day. Boats run from around 5:00 a.m. until after midnight, giving you plenty of opportunities to get to and from where you need to go without feeling rushed. I believe that popular commuter times can have longer Bainbridge Island ferry wait times, so consider going outside of those windows.

What’s It Like Visiting Bainbridge Island By Ferry?

As you depart the waterfront aboard this Washington State Ferry, you will be treated to some of the  best views of Seattle . So, have your camera ready!  

This reminded me of taking the Staten Island Ferry round trip in  New York City  simply because it offers some of the city’s best views and the Statue of Liberty. And that was free, too!  

On board, you can stay inside, enjoying tables and chairs, or outside on either the boat’s top deck or end. There is even a snack area that offers a great selection of food and beverages – including beer and wine! But don’t get too comfortable because this is only a 35-minute crossing. 

When you arrive at Eagle Harbor on  Bainbridge Island , the nearest town is Winslow. That is where we choose to spend our afternoon there! Once leaving the boat, make a mental note of where you are. You’ll need to return here to catch the Bainbridge to Seattle ferry for your return trip.

Winslow, Bainbridge Island 

Once you disembark, you’ll find yourself in a small Bainbridge Island ferry terminal. But then, where do you go from there?

If you don’t have a car, my recommendation would be to explore the community of  Winslow . It’s an easy .25-mile walk to the main street, where all the shops and restaurants are. This small 10-block community is very charming, like something out of a Hallmark movie! The main thing to do is visit the shops (there is a great bookstore) and eat/drink. Two of our favorite things! 

We walked down the main street before heading to the Winslow Wharf Marina. I loved strolling the boardwalk and gazing at all of the boats. It was the perfect summer day and about as picturesque as it gets! 

We sat outside at  Docs Marina Grill  for a late lunch before returning to the Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal. As you can see in my photos, the day started out a little foggy, but by midday, it was sunny and warm!

About Bainbridge Island

Nestled within the Puget Sound,  Bainbridge Island  is a lovely destination that perfectly blends nature’s wonders with vibrant community life. 

Commutable by a short ferry ride from  Seattle , this Island has deep historical roots, with its past intertwined with the Suquamish Native American tribe. A distinctive historical facet of Bainbridge Island was its significant role during World War II when it became a site for the internment of Japanese Americans. In 1942, 227 Japanese Americans living on Bainbridge Island were brought to the Eagledale Ferry Dock and forcibly removed from the Island. The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial is a poignant reminder of this history.

Beyond its historical narrative,  Bainbridge Island  boasts an array of recreational delights, from meandering forest trails to breathtaking waterfront vistas. On our day trip, we didn’t explore the many areas of Bainbridge Island popular among outdoor enthusiasts. However, we enjoyed a wooded stroll through Waypoint Park on our short walk from the ferry dock to Winslow.

Winslow is often considered the Island’s heart and soul. Winslow stands out for its quaint boutiques, art galleries, and upscale dining venues. Celebrating artistic expression, Winslow hosts events like the Bainbridge in Bloom garden tour and is home to the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, a haven for local and global artistic talents. 

Bainbridge Island’s historical significance is elevated because pickleball, a popular paddle sport, was invented on Bainbridge Island. I posted about this on my  @ourlittlelifestyleblog  Instagram stories while we were on the Island and received many messages from readers who love playing pickleball. It’s become quite popular again in recent years. I noticed a lot of cute pickleball-themed merchandise in many of the small shops in Winslow. 

Bainbridge Island Things To Do

Our most recent trip was short and sweet, but there are many other  things to do on Bainbridge Island . I have done some of these on past visits! 

Explore Bloedel Reserve:   Wander through lush gardens, tranquil ponds, and serene woodlands in this botanical paradise.

Go Sailing:  While strolling around on the boardwalk, we saw many signs for Sail Bainbridge and others. If we had more time, I would have loved to have booked a sailing outing on Bainbridge Island. 

Fay Bainbridge Park:  Have a beach day with stunning views, picnic spots, and tidepool exploration.

Visit Winslow:  As I said above, this is a great place to browse charming boutiques and art galleries and do some top-notch eating and drinking, all while soaking in the Island’s artsy atmosphere.

Manitou Beach and Pool:  Relax by the waterfront and enjoy panoramic views of Seattle’s skyline.

Visit A Winery:  Bainbridge Island is home to several wineries spread throughout the Island. If you are a wine enthusiast, add it to your list! 

Hiking Trails:  Embark on scenic hikes like the Grand Forest for a refreshing dose of nature and wildlife spotting.

Bainbridge Island Museum of Art:  Immerse yourself in local and global artworks that inspire creativity and cultural appreciation.

Pickleball Fun:  Play or watch the sport invented on the Island at local courts and join the lively community.

Japanese American Exclusion Memorial:  Pay respects to history at this poignant memorial honoring Japanese Americans who were interned during World War II.

Walk The Hawley Cove Trail:  Hawley Cove Trail begins near Waterfront Park and offers two routes. The 1.5-mile Eastern route takes you along the beach and into a wooded area. The 2-mile Western route hits more historical sites and parks and is nearer to restaurants.  

Enjoy The Farmer Market:  Experience island life at its best with local produce, artisan crafts, and live music at the bustling market. The market, located near the town hall in Winslow, is open from 10:00 a.m. -to 2:00 p.m. every Saturday from April through November.

Eagle Harbor Book Co.:  I mentioned this one earlier, too! Browse this charming indie bookstore with a well-curated selection and friendly staff.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding:  Glide along the shoreline, discovering hidden coves and enjoying the calm waters of Puget Sound.

Bainbridge Distillers:  Located north of Winslow, near Bainbridge Brewing and Fletcher Bay Winery, this is a great place to savor handcrafted spirits in a cozy setting while learning about the Island’s distillation process.  

Mora Iced Creamery:  Indulge in heavenly scoops of locally made ice cream in inventive flavors that tantalize your taste buds. Take our word for it; it was delicious! 

As you can tell, Bainbridge Island offers a delightful blend of history, nature, and cultural experiences, making it a perfect destination for explorers. So, whether you have a day or want to extend your trip and stay longer, you will have no shortage of things to do! 

Getting Around on Bainbridge Island Without A Car

I mentioned that we did not have a car, so we explored nearby areas on foot. If you want to venture out further, there are a few options.

First, there are  bike rentals  available near the Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal. That looks like a lot of fun! 

Second,  B I Ride , offered by  Kitsap Transit , provides residents and visitors an inexpensive way to get around, with all fares under $2. Riders can board the bus at a scheduled stop. Once on, you can tell the driver where you want to go, and they will take you there. 

This bus does have regularly scheduled stops at the Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal, Bloedel Reserve, and Lynwood Center. If you want to schedule a ride from somewhere else, you can call 1-844-4BI-RIDE to schedule a ride. They ask that you do this 2 hours in advance, so plan ahead. 

Lastly, traditional taxis and rideshares are available. However, availability can really vary, so plan accordingly if you are planning to get back on the Bainbridge Island Ferry. 

We traveled from Canada to Seattle by ferry with a car for $150. After 5 ½ hours, I wished I'd just left my vehicle at home.

• I travel between Canada and the US often, and I recently took a route that used a car ferry.
• With two passengers and a car, the trip cost about $150, and it took about five and a half hours. 
• I don't necessarily think having your car adds to the trip, so I'd take a passenger boat next time. 

Nearly 400,000 people travel between Canada and the US daily, and one of the best parts of living in Victoria, British Columbia, is its relative proximity to the state of Washington.

It's common for locals to spend a weekend in Seattle to catch a sports game, see a concert, or do some cross-border shopping.

But even though the cities are pretty close, getting there can be a headache if you don't know what you're doing. Victoria, BC , is located on an island, so unless you're flying, you'll need to take a boat.

Under ideal conditions, traveling there with your car takes at least four to five hours. But when you factor in ferry times, potential delays due to weather, border wait times , traffic, and stopping for gas, it can easily become an eight-hour journey.

Recently, a friend and I took the car ferry from Victoria to Vancouver in order to get to Seattle. Here's how it went, and what you need to know before booking a trip.

There are several options for getting to mainland Washington from Victoria, BC.

The Victoria Clipper offers the fastest direct route between Victoria and Seattle, but it's a passenger-only ferry.

If you want to take your vehicle, you'll either need to take the Blackball "Coho" Ferry to Port Angeles, Washington, or BC Ferries to Vancouver and drive two to three hours to Seattle.

On our way, we wanted to stop at Seattle Premium Outlets in Tulalip, Washington (about an hour outside of Seattle). And since we'd be stateside, we'd have the opportunity to stop at Trader Joe's to stock up on our favorite American snacks.

Having a car would make both pit stops easier, so we decided to book tickets on BC Ferries.

Tickets vary depending on your vehicle, the number of passengers, and their ages. Vehicles under 20 feet cost 67.40 Canadian dollars, or about $49, each way. But that cost doesn't include the driver or any other passengers.

Adult fares are 19.10 CAD each way, so our total for one way on the ferry was 105.6 CAD.

If you’re traveling on a weekend, make a reservation and get there early.

Since we were taking our car, we needed to factor in the driving time to the ferry dock in Swartz Bay, located about 30 to 45 minutes outside of Victoria.

BC Ferries serves travelers from all around Vancouver Island and the lower mainland of British Columbia. Weekends are typically busy, and popular sailings can sell out.

Traffic is also busier on the weekends , so give yourself plenty of time and arrive at least 30 minutes in advance.

I recommend booking a reservation online to guarantee your spot on a specific sailing. Reservations cost an extra 20 CAD, but I think it's well worth it.

Even if you have a ferry reservation, know that there's a chance your ferry can get canceled or delayed due to weather conditions — forcing you to take the next sailing in one or two hours.

There are gorgeous views throughout the ride, which made up for the lack of Wi-Fi.

One of the things I love about taking the 90-minute boat from Victoria to Vancouver is the incredible scenery and ocean views . If the weather is decent, I recommend sitting outside.

There are picturesque islands covered in lush forests, and you may even spot a pod of whales or dolphins if you're lucky.

But if you plan on catching up on your favorite shows, download content before the ferry departs. There were no Wi-Fi options on board.

Since mobile reception is also spotty, I used the trip to catch up on work using offline apps and take in the scenery.

There’s a restaurant on the ferry, and it's actually decent.

The onboard cafeteria offers everything from coffee and desserts to local specialties, like Nanaimo bars (a classic BC layered treat) and White Spot burgers.

Surprisingly, I don't mind the ferry food, even though it tends to be pretty expensive. If you're not sure what to get, skip the prepackaged salads and get the poutine.

At about 7 to 8 CAD, it's one of the cheapest things on the menu, and it's tasty and filling.

But if you don't want to deal with lines or crowds, you should bring your own meals.

There's pretty much always a line at the cafeteria — on my last trip, I waited 30 minutes to order a burger and a Diet Coke. The dining area is also jam-packed with fellow travelers and has the vibe of a crowded mall food court at sea.

The arrival process is pretty straightforward.

The crew makes an announcement asking passengers to return to their cars 15 minutes before docking. That's when I usually sneak in a last-minute trip to the restroom before heading down to the car deck.

We spent about 10 minutes in the car waiting for the boat to dock before driving off.

We made our way to the Peace Arch Border Crossing.

The ship docks in Tsawwassen, a small town outside of Vancouver, and it's about a 40-minute drive to the Canada-US border.

This drive always gives me anxiety because you can't predict how long the wait will be.

We were lucky and only had to wait about 20 minutes on this trip. But hours-long queues at the border are common, especially if there's a special event happening in Seattle like a Taylor Swift concert or a Mariner's game.

If possible, avoid driving into Seattle during rush hour.

Traffic jams are also common on what should be a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the border crossing to Seattle, especially as you get closer to the city.

There have been previous trips where it's taken me four hours because I got stuck in a gridlock, so I always do my best to avoid getting there anywhere near rush hour.

We opted to stay overnight in Seattle.

It's technically possible to go to Seattle for the day via the car ferry, but we wanted more than a few hours in the city before turning around and catching the last ferry home at 10 p.m .

On this trip, we booked a one-night stay at The Edgewater — an iconic Seattle hotel with a storied history of hosting legendary musicians like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pearl Jam.

Our room cost 329 CAD, and we loved the incredible waterside views, the central location, and the easy car access.

I kind of wish I didn't have my car in Seattle.

Since we stayed in downtown Seattle, we were within walking distance of Pike Place Market , the Nordstrom flagship store, and buzzy dining options in Belltown.

We also spent an afternoon exploring the trendy Capitol Hill neighborhood, located a 10-minute drive from downtown. But we ended up taking an Uber because we knew it'd be easier than finding our own parking on the weekend.

The city has a public transit system that includes a light rail, a monorail, and streetcars, so it's pretty easy to get around without a car.

When I compare the time and money spent, I wish I’d left the car at home.

In addition to the roundtrip ferry fare (with corresponding fees and taxes), my friend and I spent about 82 CAD on gas, bringing our total transport costs for the weekend trip to 323 CAD, not including the hotel stay .

I've taken the Victoria Clipper passenger ferry to Seattle for past trips, and although it's more expensive (344 CAD per adult, roundtrip), I found it to be a much more relaxing experience.

Our car-ferry journey took about five and a half hours, start to finish. But on the passenger ferry, I've boarded the boat at 5 p.m. and made it to my Seattle hotel by 8:15 p.m.

As a single woman who'd rather spend her weekend exploring one of her favorite cities than sitting in traffic, the passenger ferry is my preferred mode of transportation.

With that said, the car ferry has its advantages.

If you're traveling as a family or group, it's considerably cheaper than the passenger ferry. A roundtrip for a family of four on BC Ferries costs around 231 CAD, whereas the same trip on the Victoria Clipper would be around 866 CAD.

Additionally, if you plan on doing a lot of shopping or any outdoor activities outside of Seattle, it usually makes sense to have a car.

For two decades, PGA TOUR fans have followed their favorite players through shot-tracking products, powered by ShotLink, with the latest and most innovative version being TOURCAST.

TOURCAST has arrived on the Korn Ferry Tour. It’s just a bit lighter.

Korn Ferry Tour TOURCAST, powered by ShotLink Select, went live in spring 2024 as a user feature on PGATOUR.COM and the PGA TOUR app. Fans can track their favorite players shot-by-shot as they chase PGA TOUR cards across the Korn Ferry Tour’s season-long points race.

Here’s what to know about ShotLink Select, introduced on the Korn Ferry Tour at the 2024 LECOM Suncoast Classic.

What is ShotLink Select?

ShotLink is the golf scoring solution that provides detailed shot-related data in virtually real-time. This solution requires an extensive buildout of hardware, network and power services across a golf course over the span of approximately a week prior to the event, with many staff and volunteers also needed to operate ShotLink during each event. These parameters, as well as the cost of operation, can often be barriers for some events and Tours to be able to provide additional relevant, detailed, and more meaningful data to players and fans.

Because of this, the PGA TOUR has developed a more cost-effective solution, ShotLink Select, which provides the ability to capture additional coordinate data by shot at a fraction of the cost to deploy. This solution utilizes an enhanced mapping system with a small GPS tracking device worn by players to transmit coordinate data, which is utilized by ShotLink scoring systems to calculate and produce detailed data and stats, such as Strokes Gained data and stroke trails, to players and fans.

How does it work?

With ShotLink Select, players opt-in to wear a small GPS device that transmits location data to ShotLink throughout their round. This data is used in conjunction with other software, such as the Walking Scorer, to identify the player location at specific points in time, such as when a player hits their shot. That coordinate is recorded as the starting point for a stroke. Upon completion of their next stroke, the system gains the endpoint of the previous stroke and starting point of the current stroke, then calculates data for the previous stroke, such as shot distance and distance to pin. This data can then be used to display player location, detailed shot information and stroke trails for the TOURCAST presentation.

While ShotLink Pro (PGA TOUR) provides shot-level data in virtually real-time with automated software deployed across advanced tracking sensors, ShotLink Select provides this data approximately one shot behind in order to calculate the starting and ending point of a particular shot hit.

What happens if coordinate data is not transmitting?

If coordinate data is not transmitting for a period of time, ShotLink continues to collect strokes and scores via the Walking Scorer application, so a player’s score remains up to date in virtual real-time, even if their coordinate data may not be transmitting as timely.

ShotLink Select GPS devices rely on public cell service to transmit coordinate data to the ShotLink system. Because cell service availability can be inconsistent, there may be delays in the transmission of data. The devices will continue to collect and store data as the player progresses through their round. When service is restored to the device, the device will transmit the saved data and the system and downstream presentations are updated, which may be as late as the end of the round.

What are the differences between ShotLink Pro (PGA TOUR) and ShotLink Select (Korn Ferry Tour)?

Data collection devices: ShotLink Select uses a small GPS device worn by a player, who has opted to wear the device for their round. ShotLink Pro uses a combination of data collection devices such as radar and camera tracking software.

Data availability: ShotLink Select relies on players to opt-in to wear the GPS devices for their round. If a player chooses not to wear a device, detailed shot-level data and stroke trail presentations will not be available for TOURCAST presentations or be included in any additional stat calculations or rankings. ShotLink Pro tracks the ball itself for every shot, so data is available for all players in a round.

Location data accuracy: ShotLink Select GPS devices have been proven to be accurate within 1 inch of its transmitted location. Because the devices are worn on the player person and each player’s stance for a shot may differ, the device is transmitted the location of the player, so accuracy of the ball location is expected to be within one club length (approximately 4 feet) of the device worn on the player. ShotLink Pro data collection devices use ball-tracking technology to track the ball itself for more precise ball location.

Network availability: ShotLink Select relies on public cell service to transmit data to ShotLink systems. ShotLink Pro devices and systems operate on a closed, private network deployed specifically for each event.

WA’s next governor should order 2 diesel ferries to keep fleet afloat

Washington state’s iconic and once-vaunted ferry system is in crisis, thanks to feckless leadership over years, which ignored the need for planning and investment to replace increasingly rickety boats.

The only responsible way out is a new governor.

Gov. Jay Inslee has remained a hard no on anything short of hybrid propulsion for future vessels. The new, delayed class of diesel-plus-battery ferries Inslee and the Legislature pursued won’t launch until at least 2028. Meanwhile, ferry riders languish.

The good news is that all four of the leading candidates to replace Inslee, who is retiring, are ready to buy traditional diesel boats, if only to help stabilize what is a broken system. Ferries leaders say they need 16 new vessels by 2040 to return to former service levels on all routes.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bob Ferguson was the last to signal he’s willing to build two traditional diesel-powered vessels if it would hasten resolving the vessel shortage. The leading Republican candidate, former U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert, landed some well-timed licks on Ferguson over his position, pointing out Republican lawmakers pleaded with controlling Democrats to build the diesel boats during this year’s legislative session. Touché, Reichert. But it’s a position Ferguson found better late than never.

Democratic Sen. Mark Mullet is critical of Inslee’s policy that prevented construction of diesel vessels under previous transportation packages passed by the Legislature. Republican Semi Bird says he’s ready to order six diesel boats.

In recent years, Inslee’s insistence on establishing WSF’s first hybrid vessels — a combination of diesel engines and battery banks — bagged any chance of immediate relief for the depleted fleet, plunging America’s largest ferry system into its current crisis. Two of its 10 routes run at half of their previous service and a third runs at two-thirds. The rest operate with minimal and sometimes no backup in an antiquated fleet with $240 million in deferred maintenance . Beginning in 2018, in his quest to reduce state carbon emissions , the governor indeed passed up building proven diesel Olympic class vessels. The result has been canceled runs, an untold number of interruptions in riders’ lives and plummeting confidence in the system.

Inslee and the Legislature have approved $1.3 billion in funding for a nationwide bidding process to construct five hybrid-electric vessels or about $260 million each — if that amount of money will cover them. The state previously balked at producing one at Vigor Industries in Seattle for $400 million. Conversely, the diesel-powered Chimacum, introduced in 2017, cost $123 million.  

By the time the hybrid-electric vessels start to enter service, at least three longtime ferries — including one built in 1959 — will be far beyond their useful lives and likely need to be retired. That means that, even then, the state will find itself simply treading water — at a level matching the inadequate capacity of today.

None of this is to say hybrid-electric vessels and emissions reductions aren’t a worthy goal. But the transition is going to take time. One of the state’s three largest ferries, the M/V Wenatchee, is already at Vigor for retooling; for $150 million, crews destroyed two of its four diesel engines and are adding the batteries necessary to convert it to hybrid status.

Ferry systems are increasingly using battery banks to hybridize fleets; but Washington’s will be the first for boats as big as these ferries in the U.S., a fact Inslee noted at a ferry electrification summit in September .      

Should anything go wrong — bids come back too high, construction is delayed, or worse — the Legislature and new governor should build at least two additional diesel vessels alongside the hybrid program. Though ferries leaders say that, at this point, they could not be constructed as quickly as the hybrids, having a parallel track of vessel development would provide a valuable hedge against hybrid risk and help restore a fleet that needs 11 more vessels by 2040, even if all five hybrids get built. Inslee refused to entertain the idea. His successor should declare an emergency on his first day in office and pursue their construction.

Building purely diesel boats might seem counterproductive in the fight against climate change. But there is a choice that is worse than that — having no vessel on a run at all. Ferries are public transit. When they don’t sail, drivers often resort to far lengthier trips on land to get to where they’re going — a commute that sinks Inslee’s emissions reductions goals more than diesels do.
