G. Love and Donavon Frankenreiter Kick off Their Flying Embers Tour in St. Louis

With special guests and a foot-stomping, rollicking good time was had by all.

It might’ve been a dreary, cold January night outside but G. Love and Donavon Frankenreiter kept fans cheery and warm inside The Pageant for their nearly 2-hour performance.  

Kicking off this one-month, 20-date 2023 Flying Embers collaborative tour in St. Louis, G. Love and Donavon Frankenreiter jelled together like bread and butter or chips with a spicy dip.  

They commenced the night with the upbeat, sunny “Peace, Love and Happiness,” incorporating jams from the get-go by drummer Chuck Treece.  

Simple neon painted signs with the word “Love” repeated as well as another board with Jimi Hendrix’s likeness adorned the otherwise stark stage.

The first surprise of the night, to the delight of fans, was St. Louis’ Devon Allman who first joined on stage for Frankenreiter’s funky “Move by Yourself.” He later appeared for the rap/rock favorite G. Love & Special Sauce’s “Cold Beverage” as well as during the encore with two of his bandmates for a cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “One Way Out.”  

St. Louis’ own River Kittens also made guest appearances, first as backup and then more prominently during the first encore covering Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” with G. Love.  

G. Love sprinkled in stories during the set including one about Donavon saying “the sweetest things to his wife Petra” and how he decided to write a song to his wife about it, as they launched into ‘She’s the Rock.”

G. Love also gave a fond shout-out to the now-shuttered Mississippi Nights which elicited many cheers.  

Prior to the encore, the core band, comprised of G. Love, Donavon Frankenreiter, Chuck Treece, and bassist Matt Grundy, performed Frankenreiter’s soft, soulful “It Don’t Matter.”  

The night ended on surfer/musician Frankenreiter’s sweet “Swing on Down,” which Allman also accompanied.  

Kentucky-based Nat Myers opened the night with 30 minutes of stories (Memphis Minnie is one of his favorite blues musicians) and his front-porch, unplugged, old-timey country-blues tunes. With a cock-eyed hat on his head, and his fingers picking at his guitars, this young musician will be one to keep your eyes and ears peeled for. He was previously in St. Louis this past November with Willie Watson at Off Broadway.

Produced by North Mississippi All-Stars' Luther Dickinson (son of Jim Dickinson, who produced G. These days instead of surf competitions, it’s concert halls that bring Frankenreiter to town, where he entertains audiences with his unique blend of laid-back grooves, philosophical lyrics, and soulful delivery. You can find him touring the world with his three-piece band and still catching waves anytime he can.

It’s hard to track down Nat Myers. He’s one of those young solitaires you hear before you see. As a performer, he emits but doesn’t distill, his secrets. His style’s homemade, unplugged. He began as a street performer before working into traditional venues. He makes his home in Northern Kentucky.

Being a professional surfer, playing in the band, Sunchild and being a long-time friend of Jack Johnson just wasn’t for Donovan Frankenreiter as he embarked on a solo career in 2004.

Born on December 10th 1972, Frankenreiter, was looking for a new direction for his music in the early 2000s, he left the band Sunchild, which was his own project that he founded himself and signed with Brushfire Records and released his eponymous solo album, which was recorded with co-producers, Jack Johnson and Mario Caldato Jr. Johnson features on the album as does G.Love. His first album was released in 2004 in Australia and reached the top forty of the ARIA albums chart. It was a month later that the album was released in the US on May 11th 2004.

For a change of pace, Frankenreiter left Brushfire Records and signed with Lost Highway Records, which is the refuge of Ryan Adams and Willie Nelson. Under this label’s direction, he released “Move by Yourself” on June 6th 2006. His song “Lovely Day” earned a spot on the soundtrack of Snakes on a Plane and Georgia Rule. He also performed a set at the prestigious Abbey road Studios in London, UK, which was later released in early 2006. On the same label he released “Pass It Around” on August 19th 2008, which was followed a couple of years later by the album “Glow” which was released on October 5th 2010, but this time, under his own label, Liquid Tambourine Records. The album’s title track, “Glow” was written by Matt Nathanson.

Live reviews

Donavon Frankenreiter is a Californian singer-songwriter who makes, or at least made, music very similar to Jack Johnson. Unsurprisingly really, given that he has been a close friend of fellow surfer Jack Johnson for yonks. His self-titled debut was perfect, beach campfire music – slow, hook-driven folk rock (one of the songs even featured Johnson). More recently, Frankenreiter has broadened his pallet with bluesy soft rock, reggae and world-laced America.

It probably won’t come as a shock to hear that when I first saw him live he was supporting none other than Jack Johnson. However, this was years and years ago, just as Frankenreiter had launched his musical career and before Johnson became a superstar. It was at a tiny, dingy club in Falmouth, Cornwall; Johnson had wanted to do a special gig in the surfing capital of the UK.

I owned and love Frankenreiter’s debut and was expecting low-key acoustic music. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find a ramped-up, full band show, with his minimal surf ballads turned into extended, bluesy jams. If I had to guess, I would say that his early live touring shaped the recorded albums that followed. Song like ‘Free’ and ‘It Don’t Matter’ sounded fuller live, with the singer-songwriter showcasing real skill on the guitar, which he played with a much flashier style. The chilled out entertainer was eventually welcomed back to join Jack Johnson for a couple of tracks during his later headline slot; by then, Donavon Frankenreiter didn’t need to win over the audience.

Donavon Frankenreiter does not only have one of the coolest names in the music business, he also has one of the coolest stage shows. A self-confessed lover of the surf, the laid back beach sounds have always been a heavy influence on his guitar led sounds and these translate well tonight. From the moment Donavon begins his set you are transported to an Australian beach, sat beside a campfire as somebody takes charge of the musical accompaniment.

In Frankenreiter's case it is incredibly fine tuned, well practiced music that is both minimalistic and sincere. His music has quite a cult following, especially in the surf community and the easy listening vibes demonstrated are a clear indication as to why this is. The man himself has a relaxed demeanour when it comes to his stage interaction, everything is chilled out yet he still builds a pretty good connection with the crowds gathered. He pleases the masses with the likes of 'Glow' and 'Life, Love & Laughter' that really highlight his unusual vocal. He also seems to spring into life during the more complex guitar instrumentals, much to the delight of the audience who applaud intently.

Donavon sounded great and his band is incredibly talented. Three guys producing that kind of sound is hard to imagine until you realize the one guy playing bass and guitar while looping, effectively able to clone himself on the fly. Just amazing feel and sound.

DFrank killed it again with one other excellent musician and guitar playing partner and a tape deck!! So much love in the room, always a great vibe at his concerts, outstanding!!

Those guys rocked last night! Great energy between Matt Grundy and Donovan and I could've watched them play for hours. I am so happy I went to see the show.

This was the first time I have Seen Donavon in a venue with all seating. He didn't disappoint, but the seats threw us all for a loop when we first arrived!
