Your Guide to Muslim Friendly Singapore with Halal Food Options

Singapore, or the Republic of Singapore (officially), is a beautiful country located in Southeast Asia, is one of the perfect places to travel to as a Muslim traveller.

This lively city is also known as the  “Lion City”  and has a blend of Malaysian, Indian, Chinese, Arab and English cultures.

It is also one of the most Muslim-friendly cities in the world since it has a great Muslim community and history. You will enjoy your halal travel there and will not have any difficulty in finding halal food or mosques to pray.

In just one generation, the city has grown from a swamp state to a crown city and has installed itself as one of the world’s megacities.

Singapore

Here you can see the perfect amalgamation of history, culture, lifestyle, religious diversity and great food.

Most locals speak English and Malay. Other languages spoken are Mandarin and Tamil.

Although most Muslims prefer Arabian countries because of halal food options, mosques and support for the halal lifestyle.

However, fourteen per cent of Singapore’s population is Muslim, and Singapore has lots to offer to Muslim travellers.

Best Time To Visit Singapore

The best time to visit is in between the months of December to Early March.

December is the wettest month in Singapore, and when the atmosphere is very festive and joyful.

Singapore

You can be a part of the Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year, falling between the month of December and the start of January. If you want to visit during Ramadan you will find plenty of places to celebrate and markets to enjoy your iftar at. Although depending on the time of the year it might be hot and humid.

Feb to April are the dry months with the lowest rainfall and humidity levels. And if you want to avoid the crowd, July to November will be great for you.

Getting there and getting around in Singapore

Most flights will land at the Changi Airport, and you can access three different modes of transportation from here.

Bus service is available from 6 AM to 12 AM. You can also access a train through the subway station using terminals 2 and 3.

Taxi (Grab taxi) is the best option during the day.

Getting around in Singapore

Inside the city, public transport is easy and affordable.

The price depends on where you want to go and usually scales between S.G.D. 4(USD 3). If you plan to visit the entire city, then Singapore Tourist Pass can be a great deal for you. It gives you unlimited travel time for a set period.

There is no Uber in Singapore but there are several popular options you can choose from such as  Grab, Gojek and Tada.

Things to do in Singapore

Despite being dotted with skyscrapers all around, Singapore has maintained its natural beauty.

Singapore is home to several fantastic places that are a must-see, including Little India, Chinatown, The Financial District, and the most famous Sentosa Island.

Arab Street / Arab Quarters

As a Muslim traveller, you cannot visit Singapore and not spend a day exploring the Arab Stree or Arab quarters. Arab Street actually refers to the area including Bussorah Street, Haji and Bali Lanes and Muscat Street.

The Area has a richly coloured heritage from the Yemeni traders that used to trade in the city, now it is a vibrant hub with markets, cafes, shops and plenty of halal food options.

At the end of the day of course you can stop and pray at Sultan Mosque which is located in the area.

It is a historic neighbourhood and a perfect place to get yourself clicked with the colourful Peranakan houses.

It is an arterial road located between Geylang Serai and Marine Parade road.

Once you visit Joo Chiat, you will see colourful houses on both sides of the road while walking on the road.

Botanic Gardens

This tropical oasis garden is 162-year-old and is loved by many locals and tourists coming to the place.

Botanic Gardens Singapore

With over 10,000 species of flora, this garden is responsible for Singapore’s status as the major exporter of cut orchids.

If you like plants and gardening, it is heaven for you.

Sentosa Island

This big resort-style Island is a playground for most Singaporeans off the southern coast.

It has some theme parks, golf courses and a fantastic Coast Line.

Sentosa Island

You can spend a day at Universal studio and enjoy amazing rides with your kids. Sentosa beaches are also worth your time.

Other places to visit in Sentosa include Sentosa Golf Club, Images of Singapore Museum, Palawan Beach, S.E.A. Aquarium, Siloso Beach, Crane Dance and more.

Sentosa Island is worth a few days of your trip you are travelling with family.

Marina Bay Sands Skypark

This Hotel has one of Singapore’s most iconic sites.

Marina Bay Sands Skypark

It has a sky-high infinity pool. You cannot get access to the swimming pool without staying at the hostel, or else you can buy a ticket and access the observation deck for the once in a lifetime view of the cityscape.

Asian Civilizations Museum

This museum is a beautiful building. Here you can find the findings from the ancient Asian civilizations dating back to the 9th century.

You can see everything from the storage jars, Tang shipwreck, pottery to ceramics, gold, silver vessels to paintings, board games and religious diversity.

It is a must-visit for history lovers and kids.

Chinatown has some of the most fabulous shops, night markets and an exceptional dim sum variety. If you want to know Singapore’s best, you should visit Chinatown for sure.

Chinatown Singapore

It is a maze of narrow roads, which includes Chinatown Food Street as well.

The restaurants that serve traditional fares like Hainanese chicken rice, noodles and the famous satay.

Gardens by the Bay

Unlike the Botanical Garden, Gardens by the Bay has a mad-made vibe. This park spans over 101 hectares and consists of three waterfront gardens.

Gardens by the Bay

The gardens include a children’s park, Supertree Grove, Cloud Forest, Flower Dome, Conservatories, Horticultural themed gardens, Bayfront Plaza, and Floral Fantasy. It is beautiful and worth a visit.

Entry ticket: €12.64/adult.

Nicole further says, If you are in Singapore, you should see every part of it.

One of the fancy places I have heard about is the Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar which is usually called “The Bazaar” by residents.

You’ll find tons of food stalls to try Halal food. With beautiful lights and amazing vibes all around, it is a must-visit during Ramadan.

Every year, during Ramadan, Singaporeans will flock to the Bazaar regardless of their race or religion.

This place is famous for its trendy food and traditional clothing. It is a food and shopping haven.

You will not want to miss this annual event in the city.

Halal Restaurants in Singapore

Singapore has the most incredible food collection on the planet! You can not miss the opportunity to have some local cuisine at the hawker centres around the city.

Some dishes worth trying include the local chicken rice, mango shakes, chill crab roast and many more.

Searching for Halal food options in Singapore is not a tedious task here, almost every place has Halal food options.

McDonald’s also serves Halal food here. You can try the nasi lemak burger and the most famous cendol ice cream here.

Let’s talk about some of the best restaurants in Singapore.

Perdana Muslim Seafood

It is a low profile restaurant located at Toa Payoh estate. They serve delicious halal dishes like Chicken Paprika rice, Chicken rice, Fried rice, and Wanton noodle.

It is fun to try halal seafood options. I highly recommend it.

Al-Azhar Restaurant

Al-Azhar has an impressive ambience, excellent service and serves savoury halal dishes.

They claim to use high-quality ingredients and are definitely worth a try.

Botak’s

A place to try the Halal pizzas! I love the restaurant, customer service and the food here.

Hawker Centers

Food courts, also known as Hawker Centers, are perfect for delicious halal food.

kid friendly places in Singapore

Cajun on Wheels

A Halal-certified Louisiana-style seafood place fashioned out of a gourmet food truck.

Try their Olympian Bucket: a juicy concoction of crabs, prawns, white clams, mussels with sides of corn, and potatoes.

Cajun on wheels is located at the orchard road, ten minutes away from the Al-Falah Mosque.

4Fingers

For fried chicken lovers, you are in for a treat.

4Fingers is a Singaporean fast-food chain with stores across Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia and even the United States.

The eatery offers free-range Asian-style fried chicken in soy or spicy sauce. 4Fingers is also situated at the Orchard road.

Bismillah Biryani restaurant.

Another popular restaurant with fine dining is the Bismillah Biryani restaurant.

Here you can get all the halal food you want. This restaurant is located on Little India road, and it is one minute away from the Abdul Gafoor Mosque.

Bismillah Biryani is the only biryani restaurant in the world with a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

The seasoned rice and marinated meat here is cooked together in a pot on a charcoal fire.

For drinks, you must try their mango lassi (yoghurt, water, and spices drink).

Mosques to Pray in Singapore

Singapore offers plenty of stunning mosques.

kid friendly places in Singapore

All mosques in Singapore offer private prayer and ablution areas, as well as prayer garments for females.

Sultan Mosque

Probably one of the most famous mosques in Singapore, also considered the national mosque of Singapore, it is located on 3 Muscat street in the Arab quarters.

The beautiful building with the golden domes holds great significance for the Muslim community. It was initially built in 1832 for Sultan Hussein Shah and then renovated in 1932 by Singapore’s oldest architectural firm.

Masjid Al-Ansar

The al-Ansar Mosque is among the first few Mosques built under the Mosque Building Fund programme.

This mosque was completed in 1981 and is located at Chai Chee Street and Bedok North Avenue junction.

It is one of the few mosques that offer teachings in Tamil and is one of the two mosques that allow a full-time Welfare officer.

Masjid Al-Falah

This mosque was built in 1987 and is located at Bideford Road, a two-minute walk from Orchard Road.

While it has a tiny architecture to speak of, it is still recognized as an important place.

Masjid AL-Istighfar

The Al-Istighfar mosque is located in Pasir Ris and was a mosque that was completed in 2000.

This three-storey mosque is one of the mosques built under phase three of the Mosque Building Fund programme.

Transportation

One of the best ways to move around the city is by the metro as traffic can be bad, especially during peak working hours. Since the city is small you can stay pretty much anywhere and still easily explore it.

There is also a fantastic guide from Visit Singapore on Muslim friendly things to do in the city that is worth checking.

Halal holidays in Singapore – Halal travel and tour tips for Muslim tourists

Halal Holidays in Singapore

Singapore is one of the cleanest and safest holiday destinations in the world.

It is a unique combination of awe-inspiring architecture, natural beauty, rich culture and delicious cuisine.

Singapore is a highly cosmopolitan city and is a neighbor to the predominantly Muslim country Malaysia.

Even though Singapore is not a Muslim state, almost 15% of its population follow the Islamic faith, which has helped in mushrooming of a lot of halal-friendly restaurants and resorts.

This has resulted in a lot of Muslim tourists planning their halal holidays in Singapore.

With each passing day, Singapore is becoming a preferred halal holiday destination for Muslim travelers from all over the world.

Travel agencies have also started putting together exciting halal tour packages for Singapore – historic sites, famous mosques and a range of family activities make Singapore a favorite among Muslims.

Singapore is one of the finest Muslim friendly destinations in the world. With a cosmopolitan lifestyle, superb infrastructure and friendly people it is becoming a favorite amongst Muslim tour package providers.

Muslim travelers visiting Singapore will find a host of attractions to visit, for families, couples as well as solo travelers.

These attractions include mosques, nature reserves, museums and so on.

If you are looking for halal food near these tourist attractions, keep an eye out for halal logos at eateries.

Mosques in Singapore

There are more than 70 mosques in Singapore.

While all these mosques are worthy of a visit, for a Muslim traveler visiting Singapore a few of these are must visit.

Masjid Omar Kampong Melaka, located at Keng Cheow Street in the Singapore River Planning Area is the oldest masjid in Singapore.

Masjid Sultan is a grand mosque located in the Muslim dominated area called Arab Street.

There of the other mosques that make up the best five are – Masjid Malabar, Masjid Abdul Gaffoor, and Masjid Hajjah Fatimah.

The city of Singapore has several local markets and shopping malls where tourists can shop.

The primary shopping destination is Orchard Road.

For niche shopping experiences one can visit Little India, Malay Village, China Town, and Arab Street.

Muslim travelers to Singapore particularly enjoy their time in Arab Street, so please include it in your itinerary.

Arab Street is not just a street but includes areas such as the Bussorah Street, Muscat Street, and Haji and Bali Lanes.

At the heart of this area is the 200-year old popular Sultan Mosque.

With brightly colored fabrics, Persian rugs, aromatic Arab teas, and mouth-watering halal dishes available at every corner this area is an amazing treat to the senses.

If you love shopping in the night, we strongly recommend Mustafa Centre, which is open 24 hours.

Halal Certificate for restaurants in Singapore

Singapore has a sizable Muslim population (not to mention nearby Malaysia) because of which the country has a wide variety of hotels serving halal food.

Several halal restaurants are certified by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, to leave no doubts in the mind of the Islamic traveler.

Here are some of the hotels preferred by visiting Muslim tourists –

1. Marina Mandarin Singapore 2. Royal Plaza on Scotts 3. Fairmont Singapore 4. Grand Mercure Roxy Singapore 5. Perdana Muslim Seafood 6. Al-Azhar Restaurant 7. BBQ Chicken

Muslim friendly holidays in Singapore

In fact, catering to the popular sentiment a lot of international restaurant brands such as Mc Donald, Pizza Hut, Cofee Bean, Burger King, KFC, Long John Silver etc offer halal food.

Halal vacations in Singapore

A good percentage of tourists who come to Singapore for their halal holidays are from Malaysia.

If you love to drive around, we recommend driving into Singapore from Malaysia through one of the two entry points to Singapore – Tuas and Woodlands.

Both checkpoints are accessible from the Johor Bahru city centre.

On your way to Singapore, you first cross the Malaysian immigration while getting your passport checked.

Once that’s done, you cross the bridge linking Malaysia to Singapore and get in line.

When your turn comes present your passport and Disembarkation/Embarkation Form to the immigration officer from your car window.

If you don’t have an Autopass card (an electronic vehicle entry permit for foreign-registered vehicles) you will be directed to purchase it.

Else, you will be on your way to Singapore for your halal holiday.

If you aren’t driving in from Malaysia for your halal holidays in Singapore, you must be flying in.

  • Southeast Asian destinations take top ranks in Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index 2024

Southeast Asia has once again emerged as the world’s leading Muslim tourist destination in the latest edition of the Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI), with Indonesia and Malaysia tied for the top spot among 145 destinations in the 2024 study. Meanwhile, Singapore has consistently led among Non-Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC 1 ) destinations for the ninth consecutive year, underscoring its unwavering dedication to cater to Muslim travelers by widespread availability of Halal food, prayer facilities, suitable airport amenities, and Muslim-friendly accommodation.

According to the report, the Muslim travel market is set for a significant uptick this year, with global international arrivals potentially reaching up to 168 million, exceeding pre-pandemic levels by as much as 5 percent. This growth in volume highlights the rising prominence of the segment, driven by demographic and economic expansion, cultural and Halal tourism development, and technological advancements that enable more personalized travel experiences for Muslim travelers, such as apps that locate Halal food outlets, Qibla directions, and prayer timings. The impact of artificial intelligence is also helping further customize travel experiences to simplify travel logistics while adhering to faith traditions.

Retaining their joint top position as the leading OIC 2 destinations for Muslim travelers for the 2 nd consecutive year, Indonesia and Malaysia also scored favorably on ease of entry and quality of tourism infrastructure for both Muslim and non-Muslim travelers.

Thailand maintained its position in the top five non-OIC destinations, owing to efforts towards promoting Halal tourism like increasing Halal food availability, integration of Muslim-friendly amenities at tourist spots, and enhanced accommodation and dining options for Muslim travelers.

Meanwhile, the Philippines recorded an increase in its score on communications compared to 2023. Among non-OIC destinations, the Philippines has steadily increased its appeal to Muslim tourists by strategically developing their Halal Tourism portfolio, enhancing halal accreditation of hotels and restaurants, and conducting Halal awareness orientations. This effort builds on their achievement of winning the Emerging Muslim-friendly Destination of the Year award in last year’s Halal in Travel Global Summit, based on GMTI 2023 results.

GMTI, now in its ninth year, analyzes data across 145 destinations using the ACES framework, built around metrics on Access, Communication, Environment, and Services. Over time, the criteria have evolved to keep pace with the changing needs of Muslim travelers. This year, new metrics on availability of facilities and services for travelers with disabilities were added to the model.

“It is encouraging to see that the travel sectors in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore not only maintained their rankings in this year's GMTI, but also improved their individual scores. This reflects a broader trend of increased consideration for Muslim travelers, with average scores across the Index rising by 10 percent,” said Fazal Bahardeen, Founder & CEO, CrescentRating. Mr. Bahardeen also added: “It is also positive to see the Philippines continue to improve its score, which demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the Department of Tourism to bolstering Muslim-friendly tourism and advancing the destination's appeal. As Muslim travel continues to gain momentum, the GMTI 2024 report provides invaluable insights for stakeholders across the travel and tourism sector to leverage the growing Muslim travel market.”

Safdar Khan, division president, Southeast Asia, Mastercard, said: “According to the latest report from the Mastercard Economics Institute (MEI) ,  travelers from and to Southeast Asia are becoming increasingly focused on getting the best value from their trips to ensure the most unforgettable experiences, a shift echoed in the rapidly growing global Halal tourism industry. At the same time, technology is helping this demographic to travel in ways that meet their unique needs, from AI-powered hyper-personalized experiences to Mastercard’s own enablement of easy and secure cross-border payments. Together this heralds a new level of convenience for Muslim travelers and unlocks a new era of growth and profitability for travel operators. Mastercard’s long-running collaboration with CrescentRating is both a testament to the strength of the partnership and the ongoing importance of understanding and serving Muslim travelers.”

1 Non-OIC countries are those that are not members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. These countries may have significant Muslim populations or cater to Muslim travelers but are not officially part of the OIC.

2 The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an international organization consisting of 57 member states, which are primarily Muslim-majority countries. The OIC aims to safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony.

Philippines Celebrated as Muslim-Friendly Travel Destination

T he Philippines was hailed a Muslim-friendly nation at the 2024 Halal in Travel Global Summit in Singapore, the second time it was recognized on the Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI).

GMTI released its annual report benchmarking destinations in the Muslim travel market on May 30, naming the Philippines an “emerging Muslim-friendly non-Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Destination.”

The report acknowledged the commendable efforts of the local tourism sector to ensure Muslim travelers in the country could still feel the comfort of home, despite the different environment in a predominantly Christian country.

“Tourism authorities [of the Philippines] have placed halal tourism high on their priority agenda, evidenced by their action to enhance the halal tourism portfolio and raise awareness among tourism stakeholders about the values and practices important to Muslim travelers,” the GMTI report stated.

The Philippines was hailed for keeping up with other emerging destinations in Southeast Asia alongside predominantly Islamic nations Indonesia and Malaysia, in providing hospitality services to Muslim tourists.

“Halal tourism presents a rapidly growing market segment. By prioritizing this, we not only demonstrate our commitment to inclusivity and cultural sensitivity but also open opportunities to attract more Muslim travelers from around the world while expanding markets for our tourism stakeholders and creating more livelihood and employment for our fellow Filipinos,” said Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, acknowledging the citation.

According to the GMTI 2024 report, the Philippines has improved its record in the communications category compared to its 2023 score. The country is seen to have become more appealing to Muslim travelers by expanding its tourism offerings from accommodation to a culture awareness program.

PH Efforts Through The Years

Two consecutive recognitions as a Muslim-friendly tourist destination came from years of broader strategic efforts and collaborations to diversify the Philippines’ tourism sector and attract tourists from majority Muslim countries.

During the first recognition, DOT pledged to focus on the country’s development of a halal tourism portfolio to ensure its prioritization in the National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) 2023–2028.

The plan highlights “ halal ,” which means “permissible,” and gives due consideration to Muslim tourists whose needs such as food and facilities, are inclined to their faith. DOT promotes a wide range of services and amenities that are Halal-friendly and commits to pursuing more accreditations for tourism enterprises across the Philippines as follows:

  • Halal food accessibility

The rise of Halal-certified restaurants, food outlets, and food festivals in major cities like Manila, Cebu, and Davao – from low-cost to high-end food places – indicated efforts to showcase the richness of Halal cuisine in the country put together by the local communities and the tourism industry.

  • Muslim-friendly spaces

Muslim-friendly accommodation also extends to facilities, from airports and hotels to public spaces around the country. The airport has dedicated prayer rooms for Muslim travelers. The hotels now offer prayer mats and qibla direction signs, and some have separate swimming times for men and women to maintain privacy.

At the 2024 Arabian Travel Mart (ATM), an annual tourism event in Dubai, Secretary Frasco signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Megaworld Hotels and Resorts, ensuring their properties are Muslim-friendly. In April, the Philippines signed an agreement with the Qatari government to enhance collaboration between the two countries in the tourism and business industries.

  • Cultural Awareness Drive

To effectively accommodate Muslim tourists, the DOT fosters a warm environment for tourists through information drives as they organize Halal Awareness Orientations with the tourism stakeholders, introducing the values, practices, and beliefs of the Muslim community.

Surge in tourists

According to the projection of the halal-friendly travel guide, CresentRating, the population of Muslims could reach up to 2.12 billion and the number of international visitors could significantly increase over the next years.

This is evident with the rise in tourist arrivals from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC Middle East) in the Philippines compared to pre-pandemic numbers which have since doubled, reaching over 79,000 and indicating a recovery rate of 115.28 percent.

The country’s tourism sector is optimistic about the latest records. It expects a surge in tourist arrivals for the next few years from Islamic regions in the Middle East, North Africa, and neighboring countries in Southeast Asia.

“Adapting to the changing needs of Muslim travelers by offering Halal-friendly accommodations, dining options, prayer facilities, and other services enhances the overall visitor experience and showcases our respect for diverse cultural and religious practices,” said Frasco.

This, in turn, fosters goodwill and strengthens our reputation as a welcoming and inclusive travel destination,” she added.

The Philippines’ two-year recognition in GMTI highlights its dedication to embracing cultural differences and promoting inclusivity in tourism. With the ongoing improvements in its Halal tourism services and hospitable atmosphere for travelers, the country continues to strive to become one of the premier destinations for Muslim tourists around the globe.

In 2015, the Philippines became the first non-Muslim country to adopt harmonized halal product standards. Since then, the country’s participation in trade fairs has featured halal products such as halal coconuts at the SIAL Middle East showcase in Dubai.

Malaysia will consider tax incentives for halal industry investments in Johor-Singapore SEZ

halal travel singapore

JOHOR BAHRU - The Malaysian government will discuss tax incentives for businesses investing in the halal industry within the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi has said.

He added that he would raise the matter with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the Cabinet meeting on June 5.

“The Johor Menteri Besar has requested a tax holiday. I will whisper this to the PM, for the matter to be given due reconsideration.

“I will try to follow through... he may consider including (the tax holiday) as one of the incentives given to halal industry players in his Budget 2025 speech in October,” he said after launching the Halal on Track programme at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre on June 4.

At the event, Datuk Seri Zahid also emphasised the potential of the halal market, urging local entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity to introduce more halal-certified products, and not just in the food and beverage category.

In his welcome address earlier, Johor’s Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi asked for special tax incentives for firms that invest in the JS-SEZ as well as the improvement of infrastructure such as roads.

The prime ministers of both countries have agreed to finalise the full-fledged JS-SEZ agreement during the Singapore-Malaysia Leaders’ Retreat later in 2024.

A memorandum of understanding was inked in January to jointly develop the special economic zone. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
