Only 7 kilometres from the city centre of Ushuaia, you will find the Martial Glacier, which offers i mpressive views of the city of Ushuaia , the Beagle Channel and the hills surrounding the city.

It is located within the Martial Glacier Nature Reserve and access is free of charge . It can be visited either in winter, since it has a ski center for children, or in summer for trekking in the Fuegian forests.

Martial Glacier Nature Reserve Trails

• Forest Path : this is the name given to the path from the Mountain Refuge to the end of the chairlift. It is quite steep.
• Filo trail to the panoramic viewpoint of Ushuaia : it is 600 metres long and climbs up to 700 metres above sea level. From here, the views of the city centre of Ushuaia with the Beagle Channel in the background are amazing. Ideal to stay and take lots of pictures.
• Martial Glacier : it is a little more than a kilometre away but you climb from 500 to 1000 metres above sea level. Although the trekking to get to the base of the Martial Glacier is uphill (especially if it is done from the Refugio), it is suitable for the whole family as it doesn’t require such a demanding physical effort. However, in winter you have to take into account the snow and the cold, which can make the hike difficult.
• Cañadón Negro : it is the longest in distance, about 1,6 km, and climbs up to 1050 metres above sea level.
• Waterfall trail : 400 m long and 700 m above sea level.

Then, the descent to the Martial Glacier Mountain Centre or to the city takes about half the time of the ascent. In any case, it is worth going slowly to avoid injury and stopping along the way to take pictures of the city of Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel.

If you are going to visit the Martial Glacier, at the Mountain Center where the hike to the base of the glacier begins there is a mountain refuge, which has a small cafeteria and bar where you can eat stews and sandwiches accompanied by a drink.

Recommendations to visit the Martial Glacier

• Bring warm clothes and a waterproof jacket : the weather in Ushuaia is very changeable in the same day, and even more so when we are at high altitude. You should bring something waterproof in case it rains or snows, even in summer.
• Carry a bottle of water : it is very important to hydrate yourself when trekking to the base of the Martial Glacier.
• Do not throw rubbish on the path.

How to get to the Martial Glacier from downtown Ushuaia

Although there are public buses that make the journey, the easiest way to visit the Martial Glacier is to take a taxi from the city centre to the Martial Glacier Mountain Centre , and then start the hike up the ski slope. If the taxi fare is shared between several people it is more convenient than taking public transport.

Another option is to walk from the city , but be aware that the climb is quite steep.

Cómo llegar a martial.

En auto son 15 minutos por un buen camino. Los taxis y remises ofrecen el viaje hasta las instalaciones del Martial.

Caminando son aproximadamente 7 kilómetros por un camino que va ascendiendo y desde el cual se pueden observar hermosas vistas panorámicas de la bahía y de Ushuaia.

Hay épocas del año que funciona transporte público (colectivos y combis) entre la ciudad y el Martial.

Para tener en cuenta : una posibilidad es llegar a Martial en taxi o remis y volver caminando a la ciudad (el regreso es cuesta abajo).

El Glaciar Martial es un lugar privilegiado para las caminatas y trekking . En el lugar hay diferentes senderos que se adentran en la montaña para disfrutar del contacto con la naturaleza rodeado de hermosos paisajes. Cada sendero tiene su grado de dificultad, hay caminatas fáciles que son ideales para toda la familia y algunas difíciles para aventureros más experimentados.

Durante el invierno la nieve es la protagonista y entonces la actividad pasa por el esquí alpino y de fondo, las caminatas con raquetas y los juegos con la nieve. En la Escuela de Esquí Ushuaia se dictan clases y se alquila equipo y vestimenta para los que quieren esquiar. Si bien el área de esquí no es grande es un buen lugar para tener un primer acercamiento a la nieve o para que los niños comiencen a esquiar.

En el Glaciar Martial también se puede realizar canopy y tirolesas en el bosque fueguino. Estas actividades están enmarcadas en el denominado Turismo Aventura y es apto para toda la familia. La empresa Canopy Ushuaia ofrece dos circuitos: 1 El circuito largo está formado por 9 tirolesas y 2 puentes colgantes, su recorrido lleva 30 minutos. 2 El circuito corto lo forman 7 tirolesas y es el recomendado para aquellas personas que tienen poco tiempo o para grupos de visitantes.

To reach the Martial chain one must travel only 7 km. from downtown Ushuaia , along a winding road that reaches the base of the ski slopes. The only means of elevation once there is a chair lift, which takes 15 min. to travel from base to top. You can also climb on foot, following the same route as the chairlift, bordering a stream. There is regular transport from the city center. And the hiking options vary in length, ranging from one to many hours according to the chosen circuit. Glacier Martial Trekking Experience Guide (Complete Hike Overview)

One of the fan favorite activities in Ushuaia is to take part of a Glacier Martial trekking experience. Since the hike is right nearby town, not too difficult, and offers great views, many decide to add it onto their itinerary.

The hike takes you up the mountains surrounding Ushuaia, as you get to enjoy views of the Beagle Channel, the surrounding mountains, and of course the Martial Glacier itself.

This guide will walk you through how to take part of a Glacier Martial trekking experience for your next trip to Patagonia.

1) Glacier Martial Trekking Details

Below are some helpful stats and details about the Martial Glacier hike to better prepare you for your trek:

• Starting & Ending Point : Refugio de Montana

• Elevation Gain : +588 meters / +1,930 feet
• Duration : 3 Hours

Optional Viewpoint : Note that the stats above include an optional viewpoint spot that is off of the main trail . You will see that side trek on the map below. If you exclude the extra viewpoint, then expect to save around 1.9 km / 1.2 miles from the trail.

Hiking Note : I should also point out here and it clear that this is not a trekking guide for a hike on the glacier itself. This is simply a hike to the glacier, where you can a close up view of it. There are longer guided options that do take you onto the glacier with the appropriate equipment.

Fun Fact : The name of glacier comes from an explorer by the name of Luis Fernando Martial . He was the head of a French scientific expedition that arrived around Ushuaia in 1883.

2) Getting to the Starting Point

There are a few main ways to go about getting to the starting point of the hike. You can either make the walk from town, grab a taxi, or drive there on your own.

The easiest and most convenient way to get to Refugio de Montana is by taxi. You can simply make your way into town and find one for yourself or just have your hotel make a call for you. The one way cost will be around $10 USD.

I wouldn’t worry too much about grabbing a taxi back to town. When I was there, several taxis were waiting in the parking lot, and several more were dropping people off. If you are having issues, the folks in the coffee shop can help call one for you too.

The town is located directly beneath the Refugio de Montana starting point. However, it is a windy and tough trek up.

The walk up is as long as the hike itself – just around 8 km / 5 miles, and would take 2+ hours. I would only recommend this if you want to have a longer trekking day out in front of you.

You can also decide to taxi up/down and then walk the other leg. If you do that, I would probably recommend taking a taxi up and walking down as you get some nice views out in front of you.

Renting a car in Ushuaia is not a bad idea either. Since many of the top hikes and attractions are located outside of the town center, you will constantly need to figure out logistics to get to various places.

While the driving times are not long to get around, having a car will sure make things more convenient for a trip.

3) Glacier Martial Weather

The one tough thing about hiking in Patagonia, is you never know when the weather will turn for the worst. At one moment it may be nice and sunny while the next is windy and rainy. This is exactly what happened to me when I went about my Glacier Martial hike.

As I took a taxi up from town the weather was looking fine with a bit of overcast. When I got to the starting point, the clouds continuously built up and it starting to rain.

You will see in these photos that the weather was not great for hiking, But overall, I still did enjoy my time on the trail, especially as the weather continued to clear.

While I am sure most of your activities will be weather dependent around Patagonia, it never hurts to take a look at the local Ushuaia weather forecast that can give you a better idea of how a day is shaping up.

4) Patagonia Packing List

With that said, you must come prepared with the appropriate packing list when going about hiking in Patagonia. Layers, rain jackets, good hiking shoes are just some of the essentials.

The weather can consistently change and so can the terrain. You will want to prepare yourself for all situations, so I would recommend you take a look at the day hike packing list I put together for the trails.

There are certain parts of Patagonia trails that can get very soggy and muddy, so having appropriate footwear and socks is a must.

5) Hiking Map & Elevation Gain Profile

Before I go into the details of the hike, I did want to lay out the hiking map and elevation gain profile for you. There are a couple ways to go about the hike as there are various routes up the mountain towards the glacier.

You can decide to just head up one way and come down the same, or you can mix and match between a couple different trails.

I would recommend having a navigation app handy like AllTrails or Maps.me to better help you understand where you are on the route.

The route I took was the same way up and down (as seen on the map). However, you can opt for a portion of the route to be on the Sendero del Bosque (Forest Trail) -> the right hand trail at the beginning of the hike.

You can also see I added in that side trip off to the right hand side, which takes you to another viewpoint area.

You can also find the elevation gain profile below that shows the ups and downs of the route.

The first portion of the hike is a moderate uphill gain. However, as you get closer to the glacier itself, the elevation gain does get steeper before making it to the end of the trail.

On the way down, I added in the optional viewpoint, which extended the overall elevation gain/decline of the hike.

6) Glacier Martial Trekking Experience

Once you have made it to the starting point of the trail, it is time to begin the hike up to the glacier. Out in front of you, more so on the left hand side, you will see a wide open pathway. This is the main trail that will take you up the first portion of the mountain.

On the right hand side you will find the forest trail that runs along the river. Both of these trails meet up with each other about a mile or so up the route. Looking back on my time, I should have taken one trail up and the other back down, but you can opt for whatever suits you best.

I did enjoy the first portion of the trail as the pathway is quite wide and open. This gave me the chance to see the vast glacier covered mountain range out in front of me.

After around 30 minutes of hiking up, the trail begins to merge with the forest trail as you walk alongside the river and then cross over a small bridge. The trail continues upwards, where you will reach the first main viewpoint area.

From here you will see the Martial Glacier just up the mountain surrounded by flowing water and some scenic greenery landscape.

At this viewpoint area, there are three trail options to choose from.

To your right you will find the turnoff to a secondary viewpoint area. This out and back hiking option will add around add a mile or so your overall hike in addition to some elevation gain. I opted to head there on the way back, so more on that soon.

Out in front of you will be two hiking trails that both meet up at the same place by the Glacier Martial itself. If you look closely in the image below, you should see both hiking trails etched into the mountainside.

I opted for the right hand side trail as that seemed like the more frequented route. But this could also be a place where you head up one way and down another.

Here is where the climb begins to get steeper as you get closer and closer to the final Martial Glacier viewpoint spot. It should take around an hour from this point to reach the end point.

Continue the climb upwards as you enjoy some beautiful Patagonian landscape in every direction. Be sure to turn around from time to time so you can take in the view of the Beagle Channel and the valley down below.

As you approach the viewpoint area, the terrain does get rockier and a bit more difficult to maneuver. But soon enough you will reach the ice itself, where you can take in the view from down below.

Not only can you enjoy the glacier itself, but in the opposite direction you will also get some great views looking back down to Ushuaia and beyond. I spent around 30 minutes just taking it all in before beginning my descent.

After getting back to the intersection from before, you will see the hiking sign named Del Filo (Of the Edge).

This route is estimated to take 50 minutes round trip as you take in some vaster views of the surrounding area.

If you have it in you, I would highly suggest heading down this route, as it does add even more beautiful scenery to your trekking experience.

Once you reach the end point of the pathway, you will then just need to turn right back around to get back on the main trail.

Whether or not you head down the Del Filo pathway, you will then continue the hike down through the forest, along the river, and then out into the open pathway. Remember, you can stick to the same way you came up or you can alter the route too.

Before you know it, you will be back at the entrance of the hike, where you can grab a snack and drink, and just relax. It is then back down to Ushuaia to prepare yourself for your next adventure in the region.

7) Where to Stay in Ushuaia

Ushuaia is essentially the only place you are going to want to base yourself in as you explore Martial Glacier and the surrounding areas. Below are just a few of my top recommendations when it comes to where to stay in the city.

These are all highly reviewed and recommended options so you really can’t go wrong with any of them.

Just note that during the high season (December- February), accommodation can get booked up. So, once you know your dates, you should book your hotels.

Hotel Tierra del Fuego : for a hotel located directly in the town center, Hotel Tierra del Fuego is a great option. Views of the town, mountains, and water will be right outside your window, and you will be minutes away from the action. MIL810 Ushuaia Hotel : another centrally located hotel that is a great mid tier option is the MIL810 Hotel. It is a short walk from all the top spots in town to & offers everything you need from an accommodation standpoint. Los Acebos Ushuaia Hotel : perched up above the town center, Los Acebos is a luxury option that offers guests some of the best views of the Beagle Channel. It is the perfect hotel for those that want a little more style & class. Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa : if you are looking for the top option in Ushuaia, then the Arakur Resort & Spa is for you. While it is on the expensive side, there are few hotels that can compete with its luxurious offerings.

Martial Glacier Ascent

Martial Glacier, only a few kilometers from the city center is one of the most outstanding natural attractions not only because of the awesome view it provides, but because it can be visited throughout the year as well. The Ascent One thousand and fifty meters MSL, Martial Glacier was named in honor of explorer Luis Fernando Martial, leader of the French scientific expedition which arrived in 1883. To reach the glacier, visitors must go up the winding street bearing the same name. It is paved and clearly indicated and is kept free of snow during the winter to ensure road safety. In the summer season, it is ideal for activities such as trekking. There are different options regarding difficulty and duration. Although it is completely covered in snow in winter, tourists can still enjoy Martial as there is a 56-square-kilometer ski centre, easily accessed by a chair lift. Alpine and off-piste skiing are especially appealing to more experienced skiers.

Up In The Clouds The ride in the chair lift to the trails leading up to the glacier provides one of the most amazing views of the city, the Beagle Channel and its islands. At the exit of the chair lift are the shelter of the Club Andino Ushuaia and the trail to the base of the glacier, which runs alongside a little mountain river in its last stages. Another option is walking on ice. The first slope is the steepest, although the ascent is not particularly difficult. Previous experience is recommended and appropriate gear required. Should the ascent take place during spring or autumn, special care must be taken to avoid possible cracks in the ice bridges. From the highest point there is a spectacular view of Andorra Valley, Vinciguerra Glacier and Mount as well as postcard pictures of the Beagle Channel, Navarino and Hoste Islands. Other options There are also options for visitors who choose not to walk on the ice: the ascent along Cañadón Negro (Black Gorge), a large valley to the right of Martial Glacier. There is a small amphitheatre at the top of the gorge with a breathtaking view of the islands in the Beagle Channel. Going down Continuing along the road taken to ascend, visitors will reach the chair lift that will take them down to the parking lot and several tea houses where they can treat themselves to delicious home made cakes. They can also descend on foot and delight in the views of the city.

Martial Glacier Hike, Ushuaia Trek

Hike the hidden trails of Ushuaia walking in Tierra del Fuego National Park.

Full Itinerary

Day 1: transfer ushuaia to andorra valley, trek to laguna del caminante, camp (l,d).

We pick you up at your hotel and head out of Ushuaia to the Andorra Valley.

We trek through a secluded and forested valley through beautiful mountain scenery, with open views, until we reach our campsite at Laguna del Caminante.

Day 2: Head to Superior Valley and scale either Falso Tonelli or Rebert Mount, return to camp (B,L,D)

On the second day we choose which peak to scale, for the best views.

Either route takes us through very secluded and isolated terrain – trekking heaven.

We’re hiking uphill so that we can get the very best views over the lakes and mountains of this wonderful corner of the world.

Return to the campsite for the night.

Day 3: Trek over Sheep Pass, down Sheep Canyon, transfer back to Ushuaia, ends (B,L)

Today we trek over a pass and then down into Sheep Canyon, through a beech forest.

We meet our transport for the ride back to Ushuaia, where we hope to arrive around 16.00.

Accommodation

We camp on this trip, using two man tents (provided by us) which you will be expected to help to assemble and pack away at camps.

Your trekking guide and drivers are locals from Argentina, who live and work in this fantastic country.

Our main trekking guide has been leading trips in the area since 1995 and has experience of hiking and climbing across South America.

We can cater for almost all dietary requirements – please enquire in advance.

While out trekking, you usually wake early, around 07.00, and have a filling breakfast at camp. This is usually a mix of hot drinks, cereals, toast, eggs etc.

After breakfast, packs are prepared and your guide will explain the day’s walk, and you typically walk 3-4 hours in the morning before lunch, with a short or break or two en route.

Lunch, while out walking, will be sandwiches, energy bars, biscuits etc. Please bring some favourite snacks of your own, too.

After an hour or so for lunch – depending on weather conditions – you will continue your walk, usually 1-3 hours more, although some days are shorter or longer than others, and then relax before dinner at camp.

After eating, you can choose to socialise with team members, relax in your tent or take in the views.

It can get cold very soon after sunset (albeit days are often very long in southern Patagonia’s trekking season), so most people will fall asleep early and then rise early the next day, helping to conserve energy.

Activity Level

We have qualified this as a moderate trek.

There is no high altitude to worry about, the main challenge is the changeable weather in what is a remote area.

You need to have a good level of fitness for the trip, as the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy it.

Those with no previous trekking experience can trek this trek, although experience of hiking is beneficial. There is not altitude to worry about.

The trip is open to anyone with a positive attitude who wants to walk in a stunning and remote part of the Patagonian Andes.

Practical Information

Introduction to patagonia.

For most people, Patagonia evokes a vast, windblown plateau, jagged mountains and the life of the gauchos.

The steppe that occupies much of southern South America is only one aspect of a magical region, jam-packed with amazing and contrasting landscapes.

Patagonia (latitudes 40°-55°, approximately) embraces a vast portion of southern Chile and Argentina, from the Rio Colorado in the north, to Tierra del Fuego in the south.

For convenience, we have divided the region into three zones: the Lakes District of northern Patagonian, central Patagonia and southern Patagonia.

Geography of Patagonia

Southern Patagonia (latitudes 49° to 55°) , encompassing the southern Andes of Chile and Argentina plus Tierra del Fuego, has an altogether more vertical aspect than the rest of Patagonia.

As the continent tapers towards its southern point, the Andes take on new characteristics and offer some truly impressive panoramas.

Much of southern Patagonia is characterized by virgin landscapes where man’s hand has either not been present or, because of the scale of the landscapes, goes almost unnoticed. To the west of the semi-arid Patagonian plateau, mile-high granite spires – e.g. Cerro Torre and Fitzroy in Argentina and the Torres and Cuernos del Paine in Chile – rise abruptly from the Andean foothills, while vast blue glaciers, fringed by southern beech forest, gouge out thevalleys below.

At the heart of these magnificent landscapes lies the South Patagonian Ice Field, an utterly remote icy wilderness spanning hundreds of kilometers, whose glaciers – including the Perito Moreno and Upsala – are tens of kilometres long by severalkilometers wide.

Also characteristic of the southern Patagonian Andes are its turquoise, iceberg-filled lakes. To the west lies the southern portion of the Chilean Archipelago, comprising snow-capped islands and fjords.

Across the Magellan Straits from mainland Patagonia lies Tierra del Fuego which, like the rest of Patagonia, is divided between Argentina and Chile.

The north and east of Tierra del Fuego is flat, but flanking the Beagle Channel in the south, the tail end of the Andes provide very dramatic mountain scenery.

The Lake District (latitudes 40° to 45°) or the Araucania, is a region of dramatic conical volcanoes, evergreen, high-canopy forests and, of course, lakes.

It straddles the Chile-Argentine border, and also takes in Chiloe island, in the extreme north of the Chilean Archipelago. This region stretches from Temuco in the north to Chiloe in the south.

Central Patagonia (latitudes 45 to 49) is one of South America’s best-kept secrets. The vast wilderness area can be divided in two:

• The dry band of Andean foothills and wind-blown plateau lying on the Argentine side of the Andes. This remote area is traversed north to south by a gravel highway known as the Ruta Cuarenta (Highway 40).
• The Chilean portion to the west of the Andean watershed, often referred to as the Careterra Austral (after the little-used gravel highway that crosses it from north to south).

This huge region, embracing the sparsely-inhabited southern Araucaria and Aisén Region, features temperate rainforests, snow-peaks (often extinct volcanoes), lakes and, to the west, the Chilean Archipelago: a labyrinth of fjords and mountain-islands. This, the Chilean portion of central Patagonia, boasts the northernmost of Patagonia’s many giant, sea-level glaciers.

The San Raphael Glacier, probably this region’s most famous landmark, is an immense hanging glacier whose seracs calve into an iceberg-filled lagoon.

Patagonia weather changes as quickly as the wind sometimes blows.

Summer (Nov-March) see temperatures reach up to 20°C, when glorious light pours over the region for up to 18 hours. This is the best time to visit, nevertheless, spring and summer is also when the central and southern Patagonian regions sometimes get buffeted by strong, westerly winds.

Summer days in national parks can also bring sunny, windless conditions, and you may well find yourself hiking in shorts and t-shirt. Afternoons in Los Glaciares can be warm with lots of sunshine. (Note: Patagonian UV rays are very strong).

But because of the fickle – and localised – nature of the climate here, take nothing for granted. In a single day, all four seasons might be experienced, including a biting, wind-induced cold. It has been known to snow in camps in summer!

The in winter (May-Sept) temperatures typically range from -2°C in the winter, and there is only 6-8 hours of daylight. Winds tend to die down.

More information

In general, the further south you go, the cooler it gets and the further west you go – towards the Andes and Pacific coast – the wetter and less predictable the weather is. The further east – towards and across the Patagonian plateau – the drier and more stable.

On the South Patagonian Ice Field (average height, 1,500 metres), the appearance of lenticular clouds – signifying changing conditions – can translate into extreme winds (up to 150 kmh) and heavy snowfall. Here, summer pre-dawn temperatures commonly reach -20°C, with wind chill lowering temperatures even more. However, on sunny, windless summer days, you might get away with wearing just a couple of thin layers.

In Peninsula Valdes, the city of Puerto Madryn and the capital Trelew are all located in the province of Chubut, on the shores of three gulfs: San Matias, San Jose, and Nuevo. This area features a peculiar climate because of the effect created by the Atlantic Ocean. Although it does not rain much in the region on an annual basis, summers are usually mild, and the temperature sometimes gets very hot (touching 30ºC) and then eases off in the evening. The area does get very windy at times, especially on the peninsula, and warm and water/windproof clothing is recommended.

If you head to Ushuaia, due to its extreme southern location, temperatures may remain chilly during summer (Oct-March) the use of plenty of warm layers of clothing. Winter and Antarctic visits will require extreme clothing.

When planning for the varied climatic conditions encountered in Patagonia, layering is the most practical and versatile clothing system.  It’s worth remembering that our clothing keeps us warm by retaining and isolating the heat we ourselves create.

To best maintain body heat, several layers of lightweight, warm and quick-drying clothing are far more efficient than one or two thick layers. Layers should have the following qualities:

• Breathability (able to wick away the humidity produced by sweat):
• Isolation (able to keep in the warm air our body produces); and
• Impermeability (able to impede the passing of wind and water).

First (base) layer:  This layer wicks the sweat away from our skin, thus helping keep the body dry and warm. To this end, synthetic fabrics such as polypropylene should be used.

Mid layers:  These isolating layers should also be synthetic (e.g. the known polar linings such as polartec or windblock, which are light and insulate twice as well as wool). Very important layers for retaining body heat.

Outer layer / shell:  Finally, the vital layer which protects us from climatic adversities. A breathable, wind-proof and waterproof anorak, such as Goretex.

Give plenty of thought to kit selection, and try to keep weight down.

• Sleeping bag liner (optional), for hygiene purposes.
• 2 pairs synthetic inner socks (e.g. polypropylene, thermastat, coolmax) and 2 pairs thick loop-stitch/wool socks for cold.
• Trekking boots – should be well broken-in, waterproof and provide good ankle support.
• Trainers/sandals for city-wear, evenings at lower camps & river crossings.
• Base layer leggings (1 pair).
• Thick fleece leggings (or salopettes) (1 pair).
• Goretex-type over-trousers (or salopettes) (1 pair).
• Gaiters (optional).
• Trekking trousers (2 pairs).
• Shorts – wear sparingly in early stages at altitude, as sun burns.
• Thermal base layer shirts (2).
• Microfleece mid-layer shirt (1).
• Shirt/t-shirt 1 or 2 for lower altitudes. Long-sleeved, collared shirt protects against sun
• Fleece jacket or similar (1).
• Warm jacket (down or synthetic). For camp and upper slopes.
• Waterproof Goretex-type jacket.
• Broad-brimmed sunhat, essential.
• Warm hat, fleece or wool. (N.B. Up to 30% of body heat can be lost through the head).
• Sunglasses with UV filter.
• Scarf for cold.
• Bandanna – to protect neck from strong sun.
• Light inner gloves
• Warm gloves, e.g. fleece, and outer waterproof gloves or mittens (1 pair)
• Mittens allow you to keep the fingers together, and better conserve heat (though they also make it difficult to perform certain tasks).
• Daypack (at least 30-50 litres). Comfortable and with waterproof lining or cover.
• Large rucksack or suitcase.
• Pair of telescopic trekking poles (optional).
• Water bottle (2 litres approx.) & purification tablets.
• Personal first-aid kit to include: painkillers, plasters (band-aids), moleskin, anti-biotic cream, after-bite (tiger balm), anti-diarrhoea tablets, throat lozenges, re-hydration salts & personal medication.
• Insect repellent.
• Towel & wash-kit.
• Wet Wipes/antiseptic hand-wash cream.
• Toilet paper (1)
• Sunscreen (factor 50+) and lip salve.
• Head-lamp (plus spare bulb and batteries).
• Plastic bags – ‘Zip-loc’ & tough bin liners.
• Camera and film / memory cards (take at least twice the amount you think you will need!).
• Book, e-book, mp3 player/iPod or other for free time.
• Binoculars.
• Spanish/English phrasebook.
• Extra snacks i.e. cereal bars or favourite chocolate bars.

All non-personal trekking / camping gear e.g. tents, cutlery etc is provided.

What is ATOL?

The CAA’s ATOL scheme offers protection to your money and your holiday if you book with us. Not everybody is covered (see ‘Who is covered?’ for more), as you must purchase an ‘air package holiday’ with Andean Trails to be protected.

And  ‘air package holiday’ is defined as including a flight and some ground services (hotel, transfer, trek etc). This is also known as an ‘ATOL-protected holiday’.

Who is covered?

To be covered by ATOL, you must book a flight and some ground services with us and be from the UK. If you are from the UK and only book ground services and no flights, you are not covered by ATOL (see below for more on how non-ATOL clients are covered).

If you are outside the UK and buy flights with us, you will be ATOL protected IF any of the flights booked with Andean Trails touches/stops in the UK at any point during your holiday package booked with us.

If you buy your flights elsewhere, please check with that agent if you are ATOL protected. Be careful with online flight purchases and make sure you know what protection you have, if any, before paying for flights.

Not all holiday or travel services offered and sold by us will be protected by the ATOL scheme. Please ask us to confirm what protection may apply to your booking.

For land only holidays not involving any air travel, in accordance with “The Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992”, all UK passengers booking with Andean Trails Ltd. are fully protected for the initial deposit and subsequently the balance of all money paid to us, arising from cancellation or curtailment of travel arrangements due to the insolvency of Andean Trails.

I’m not ATOL covered, what protection do I have?

If you are not ATOL covered, any payments you make to us go to a Trust account.

We can only access this money once your tour has been completed, meaning that if anything happens to Andean Trails Limited while you are on holiday, then your money is secure and you can either complete the trip or be able to make it home.

If you pay for your holiday with a credit card, some offer payment protection – please check with your cardholder.

You also should have cancellation protection written into your insurance (which we recommend you have at the time of booking) in case you need to cancel.

Argentine Patagonia

Argentine Patagonia, the southern half of Argentina, is a remote, wind swept land of plains, mountains, lakes and glaciers.

The main airport is at El Calafate which is the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park.

Nearby is the mighty Perito Moreno glacier where you have the opportunity to get up close to the ice on one of the many walkways or on a boat trip.

El Chalten, a  3 1/2 hour drive from Calafate, is the trail head for treks in to the base of Cerro Torre, Fitzroy or for the more intrepid, on to the South Patagonian ice-cap.

Ushuaia, on the Beagle channel, is the southern most city of Argentina. Ushuaia is fascinating for historical interest, is rich in wildlife and is departure port for many Antarctic cruises

Chilean Patagonia

Chilean Patagonia is a pristine wilderness of fjords, glaciers, plains, mountains and forests.

Southern Patagonia’s main attraction is the Torres del Paine National park. The granite spires attract many visitors to what some have called the 8th Wonder of the World. The park is a trekkers paradise with two classic treks, the Paine W and the Paine Circuit.

Northern Patagonia, the Aysen region,  is one of the least populated parts of the country and is blessed with spectacular countryside.

The main airport is Balmaceda near the city of Coyhaique and must see places include Lake General Carrera and the Marble Caves, The San Rafael Glacier,  the Quelat Hanging Glacier as well as driving the Austral Road.

The Futaleufu River is a must for white water enthusiasts.

The region also offers great horseback opportunities as well as kayaking ones. Nature enthusiasts can admire the impressive scenery, imposing glaciers and fascinating wildlife and flora.
