Each tour is private so the only people that are going on your tour are you and your guests. This also allows you the flexibility is determining the best pickup location for your party.

Due to the high demand of our extremely popular Christmas Light Tours and our desire to accommodate as many groups as possible, Because are Christmas Light Tours are so popular, we want to accommodate as many groups as possible. In order to accomplish this, ouOur most popular tours are approximately two hours in duration from pick-up to drop-off. Over the past 15+ years that we have offered Holiday Light Tours, we have refined to perfection

we have perfected our tours such that a two hour tour is plenty of time to see the best holiday displays that Kansas City has to offer without being too long that kids get restless or that a bathroom stop is a necessity.

Tours as short as two hours are available and, while short, still allow for the viewing of plenty of the Kansas City area’s best Christmas lights!  If you prefer to extend the yuletide gathering, our three hour tours are extremely popular and allow for additional festive displays.  Of course there are a few families each year that like to go all out with an extra long celebration of 4 or more hours allowing for plenty of time for the family to stop and enjoy dinner out on the town or allow the addition of even more displays!  Regardless of your desire for a shorter tour or a longer tour, we have got the perfect Christmas light tour for you!

Providing holiday lights tours for over a decade, Boulevard Limousine has become Kansas City’s leading Christmas lights tour company.  We have searched all over the KC metro to undercover the best displays.  Once provided with your pickup location, our elves work their MAGIC to find a route that will not disappoint.  Naturally your tour will include some of the classics we all know and love, but it will also feature multiple animated displays with light shows set to music that are really just over the top!  And of course if you have a must see display we can create a customized tour just for you that will incorporate it!

At the end of your holiday lights tour of Kansas City, you will leave filled with holiday cheer and wondering what magic went into the creation of some of the displays.  We often hear back from parents telling us that their kids rant and rave about how awesome the tour was and how they cannot wait to do it again next year!  And if that isn’t enough proof of us proving the best tours in Kansas City, each year we routinely have people take a Christmas lights tour early in the season then call to book additional tours that they can share with others in their lives because of how awesome and special our tours are!

Pricing for the Private Holiday Light Tours starts at:

*  Maximum number of passengers is the maximum number of passengers we will allow in the hired vehicle class. Festive Holiday Must-Sees

holiday light tours kansas city

Historic   Union Station   is undoubtedly one of the most festive addresses in KC .  Along with the return of the beloved Kansas City Southern Holiday Express train and mini holiday train rides to accompany, the brilliant Holiday Reflections walk-through village is back in the Grand Hall beginning Nov. 20.

Winter Magic

Thanksgiving week marks the return of Christmas in the Park , a festive drive-through display in Longview Lake Park. A tradition for more than 35 years, the park is transformed into a delightful winter wonderland with more than a million lights and 200 animated figures. The event is free, but donations are accepted to benefit local charities.

Make your way to another mesmerizing drive-through display at  Winter Magic , opening Nov. 2 and featuring a mile of lights guiding you through Cliff Drive. Plus, Holiday Light & Magic in Bonner Springs offers its own fantastic light experience on the Kansas side of the state line.

For more sparkling sights, visit the KC Winter Wonderland at  KC Pumpkin Patch . Located in Olathe and featuring a walk-through path across the farm with plenty of photo-friendly stops along the way, the experience is available select nights beginning Nov. 24.

To experience a brand new display, head to Legends Field in Kansas City, KS. Enchant Christmas brings a mystical (and mischievous) encounter to the area, featuring a light maze, an ice skating trail and a holiday village where vendors will be on display for you to find the perfect gift.

18th and Vine

Don't miss the Soul of Santa Christmas Tree Lighting , taking place in the iconic 18th & Vine Historic Jazz District  and at the Shops on Blue Parkway on consecutive weekends. And check out Parkville's Christmas on the River event as the annual holiday celebration lights the city up with live entertainment, delicious treats and the famous fireworks show at the end of the night.

The Center of Attention

holiday light tours kansas city

Checking in at a lofty 100 feet, the Mayor’s Christmas Tree at Crown Center stretches higher than those on display at the White House and Rockefeller Center. The massive holiday icon sparkles with 10,600 white bulbs and represents the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund, which aids Kansas City’s less fortunate. Mayor Quinton Lucas and a special guest always flip the switch the night after Thanksgiving.

Downtown OP Christmas Tree

Celebrate another mayor's Christmas tree at Thompson Park in Downtown Overland Park , plus a sprawling display of lights adorning the Clock Tower Plaza in the heart of the neighborhood.

A few blocks up the road, several downtown buildings light up the winter sky for City Lights. The notable centerpiece is the front façade of the 22-story Marriott Kansas City Downtown , featuring a synchronized display of 30,000 bulbs and 16.7 million colors. This annual celebration of lights marks the return of The Salvation Army's Annual Christmas Campaign.

Seasonal Shopping Centers

holiday light tours kansas city

Zona Rosa , a shopping district known for reviving several local traditions, spruces up its streets each holiday season for Northern Lights. Massive and ornate, several lighted crowns are suspended above the district’s busy streets, harkening back to a 1950s Downtown Kansas City tradition. Also in store for visitors: photos with Santa, ice skating and more seasonal festivities.

Legends Holiday Shopping

Legends Outlets Kansas City keeps shoppers in tune with its Legendary Light Show, as every 15 minutes, the sprawling shopping center will spring to life with thousands of dazzling lights synchronized to classic holiday songs. Other festive activities include a decadent 45-foot tree and larger-than-life Christmas ornaments sprinkled throughout the district.

Pick up the perfect gift for everyone at The Village at Briarcliff , one of the only locally owned shopping centers in KC. Come watch as this Northland shopping center comes to life during the season.

Brighten your winter with this guide to Kansas City's holiday lights

Visitors to Powell Gardens' Festival of Lights walk a mile-long path over 25 acres of immersive light displays.

From Bonner Springs to Powell Gardens and everywhere in between, the Kansas City metro is glowing this winter. Get lit with a holiday lights tour of the metro.

This story was first published in KCUR's Creative Adventure newsletter. You can sign up to receive stories like this in your inbox every Tuesday.

Fire and light have been part of festive holiday displays for as long as humans have celebrated winter holidays. For thousands of years, people have responded to dark winter nights with brighter and brighter lights, from resplendent candlelight to roaring bonfires.

The advent of electricity was a game-changer for holiday decorations. Perhaps not surprisingly, Thomas Edison is credited with the first strand of electrical lights in 1880, and his partner Edward H. Johnson was the first to add a string of lights to a Christmas tree in 1882.

But as the 20th century progressed, electric lights began their journey into seasonal and streetside ubiquity. Today, the average American household puts up hundreds of lights, with businesses adding thousands more.

Bright traditions

Legend has it that the annual tradition of holiday lights at the Country Club Plaza began when maintenance supervisor Charles "Pete" Pitrat hung a few strands of lights on the Mill Creek Building in 1925.

Kansas City has many iconic locations, transformed during the winter into megawatt wonderlands.

The Mayor’s Christmas Tree , one of the largest in the country at 100 feet tall, sits in the courtyard of Crown Center, scrumptiously decorated and just yards away from ice skating. The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund started in 1908, a charitable tradition that provides support for Kansas Citians in need. The fund is supported by donations and the sale of limited edition ornaments, designed by Hallmark artists and made using the tree from the previous year. This year, Kevin Strickland helped light the Mayor's Christmas Tree.

Legend has it that the impressive display of lights on the Country Club Plaza started when maintenance supervisor Charles “Pete” Pitrat hung a few simple strands of lights on the Mill Creek Building in 1925. Now, thousands of people show up for the lighting ceremony on the evening of Thanksgiving Day, which typically includes performances, speeches and local celebrities to throw the switch, while even more watch the live broadcast from home. This year, those official illuminators were members of the Kansas City Current soccer team.

Union Station , built in 1914 and reopened in 1999, has provided holiday entertainment of all sorts for decades. Currently, the outside is lit up blue and white in honor of Hanukkah, the eight-night Festival of Lights.

Last year, Union Station opened its first walk-through village experience in the Grand Plaza. Holiday Reflections returns again, with the Mini Holiday Express Ride-On Train (for children under 4 feet tall) and the newly remodeled and expanded model train gallery. In the Gottlieb Planetarium, you can learn about the natural lights of the season with showings of Sky Station Live Stars of Faith and, with a modern twist, a Holiday Magic Laser Show.

You can also learn about local holiday traditions of the 19th century with A Christmas Celebration at Missouri Town 1855 on Dec. 4 in Lee's Summit, and a Candlelight Tour of Fort Osage on Dec. 11 in Sibley, Missouri.

Winterland walks

Wander the expansive grounds of Powell Gardens during its fifth annual Festival of Lights.

Nothing makes hot cocoa taste better than taking a frosty stroll on a winter’s night. Wander the grounds of Powell Gardens during its fifth annual Festival of Lights , which runs Wednesdays-Sundays through Dec. 30 (with additional dates Dec. 20-21 and 27-28).

The Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens hosts its Luminary Walk for select nights in the first few weeks of December. With decorations along the paths and into the woods, this family-friendly event also includes musical performances and the intricately decorated Gnome and Fairy Village, created by Arboretum volunteers. The Arboretum also hosts an adults-only Candlelight Stroll on Dec. 2.

For the second year, the Kansas City Renaissance Festival transforms its Wyandotte County village into Knights of Lights , a walk-through experience with food, entertainment and activities. The festival is open Thursdays-Sundays, as well as Dec. 21-22. It's closed on Christmas but will have an extended show on Dec. 31.

Sar-Ko Aglow has its official lighting ceremony on Dec. 3, in Lenexa’s Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park . This free event includes cocoa and a visit from Santa. The park is lit nightly through Jan. 17, with free parking and no tickets required.

The Rozarks Luminary Hike , in its second year, illuminates a portion of the trails in Fisher Park on Dec. 13-18, for a free community event sponsored by the Rosedale Development Association. Flashlights are encouraged while hiking the non-paved, wooded trails, starting at dusk.

Neighborhoods and communities

The 7900 block of Outlook Street in Prairie Village, otherwise known as Candy Cane Lane, features a large tree in the middle of the turnaround at the end of the light-filled street.

Light displays can be a way for communities to share in the holiday joy, by actively creating spectacles or passively appreciating them. Both town squares and unassuming homes are transformed for the holiday season.

In Independence, Missouri, the homeowner of the Crysler Light Show added over 10,000 pixels to an already impressive display, now in its seventh year. When passing, turn the car radio to 100.3 FM for synchronized music.

Drive over to Johnson County, Kansas, to see a plethora of individual homes and neighborhood cul de sacs all decked out, including Prairie Village’s Candy Cane Lane , now in its 63rd year. Kansas Traveler includes many local sites and suggested routes.

Liberty, Missouri, hosts a Hometown Holidays celebration on Dec. 5 with a ceremonial tree lighting. While you're there, you can grab a Holiday Homes self-tour map. There’s also the drive-through Liberty Light Show at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church with live shows Dec. 3-5 and Dec. 10-12, and automated shows Dec. 13-23.

Historic Downtown Parkville hosts Christmas on the River with music, carolers, kiddie train rides, photos with Santa and more — including holiday fireworks — on Dec. 3rd.

Caring for others (and the planet)

KC Parks hosts Winter Magic, a drive-through light experience in Swope Park, which also serves as an official fundraiser for Children's Mercy Hospital.

These aren’t just impressive displays of organized combustion and randomized joy. Many of our local holiday light displays are a way to attract attention and raise funds for those in need during the holiday season.

Former Kansas City Mayor George Shelley started mayoral acts of Christmas charity in 1878, with firewood and baskets of food for those in need. It was a precursor to the current Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund. Shelley funded and decorated his own tree (lit with candles, in the tradition of the day). Read more about that history from the Martin City Telegraph.

Last year, KC Parks hosted Winter Magic , a drive-through light experience in Swope Park. It’s back this year with an additional show, Holiday Light and Magic , located in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Both holiday light shows serve as official fundraisers for Children's Mercy Hospital.

All told, though, people in the U.S. use more energy during the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than some countries use during an entire year. But there are easy ways to save energy while celebrating the holidays. Using LED lights, timers or solar-powered holiday lights can help to ensure our festivities are energy efficient, too.

You can also combat increased light pollution during the holidays by turning off lights around 10 p.m., setting a timer, or choosing to light up only a few nights a week to allow the natural world its reset as well.

"Our second year in a row going through winter magic. They changed it up from last year in a great way! Added extra lights that are in the air were so COOL!!! The staff is phenomenal and sweet. "Winter Magic was amazing, my Mom and I went last night and because it wasn’t busy we were able to drive through twice. It was raining but was still really cool. Some of the pictures turned out neat because of the rain. Definitely worth the trip, and the money goes to Children’s Mercy hospital."

"This was seriously so cool!!! I wanted to do something I hadn't done with my kids in years past. My 9 y/o son put his electronics down lol and thoroughly loved it. Even my 20 y/o daughter and her boyfriend enjoyed it! We were all in AWE! 10/10 recommend. Drive slow and soak it all in!"

"Purchase tickets ahead of time online. That seems to help keep the line of cars at a decent pace. Staff was welcoming and very friendly. The music was so fun! Make sure to change radio station when you see the signs. Different areas play along to the music."

"It was sooo fun, we enjoyed it a lot the line wasn’t super long and we got to go through twice. They also have radio stations for you to play while driving through which was exciting. Along with cheap prices for a good cause! I recommend going 100% 🎄🎅🏽♥️"

"This was/is AMAZING! I've been the last two weekends bringing family. You get interactive music lights the entire time! TUNE IN AND TAKE IT SLOW!! It is an amazing fun time the entire way through. I've recommended this to EVERYONE!. I've loved each time more and more! A MUST IN KC!"

Currently, parts of Kansas City are experiencing a rare sighting of the Northern Lights.

The phenomenon is due to a solar storm, which is the most intense event of its kind in almost two decades.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a rare severe geomagnetic storm warning when a solar outburst reached Earth on Friday afternoon, hours sooner than anticipated.

The effects were due to last through the weekend and possibly into next week.

The NOAA Weather Space Prediction Center issued a severe geomagnetic storm Watch, marking the first occurrence since January 2004.

A look at some of the views across Kansas City:

Something else I’ve never seen… The Northern Lights in the middle of the KC metro area. A solar eclipse and then the aurora borealis in a little over a month? Pretty cool stuff happening in our skies! 🌌 pic.twitter.com/y1W02T2vOn — Matt Evans (@MattEvansKMBC) May 11, 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Set the alarms and keep your eyes peeled tonight! The Aurora Borealis is expected to make an appearance in tonight's sky for many as far south as Kansas and Missouri.

The Space Weather Prediction Center (NWSSWPC) issued their first Severe Geomagnetic Storm Watch since 2005 as several strong solar flares were detected and directed toward Earth on Thursday.

As these solar flares interact with earth's magnetic field, a geomagnetic storm erupts & northern lights illuminate across the nighttime sky.

The Level G4 (Severe) Geomagnetic Storm determines how far south the northern lights could appear.

For tonight, the lights could travel as far south as northern Alabama & parts of northern California, according to the NWSSWPC.

Here are some tips if you plan to stay up tonight and adventure outside to watch this beautiful and rare sighting for the area:

  • Find a dark spot away from the city
  • An unobstructed view of the northern horizon will set you up for success
  • Allow eyes to adjust to the dark for up to 20-30 minutes
  • Best viewing time will be between 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
  • Anticipate the lights to be very faint to the visible eye and will be captured best with a high exposure camera/phone on the nighttime setting
  • Be patient, sit back & enjoy!

Send any pictures to [email protected] or find us on social media. Can't wait to see what you find tonight! Happy hunting!

*The 2nd annual Juneteenth Film Festival returns to Kansas City on Wednesday, June 4th. This year’s festival will primarily feature films written, directed, and produced by Kansas Citians including Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Willmott. All films will be screened at the Screenland Armour Theater in North Kansas City.

Curated by award-winning Fox 4 News film critic Shawn Edwards, the 2nd annual Juneteenth Film Festival will showcase feature films, documentaries, and shorts produced by Black filmmakers.

“As we celebrate Juneteenth, one of the most important days in African American history, I felt it was important that we include groundbreaking cinema that embodies the spirit of the holiday,” said Edwards.

“Kansas City has one of the longest-running Juneteenth celebrations in the country. Now we have one of the only film festivals in the country that honors the holiday by celebrating Black filmmaking.”

This year’s film festival is sponsored by the Black Movie Hall of Fame, Celebration of Black Cinema and Television, Wilson’s Industries LLC, House of Kush, and the Kansas City Film Office.

FILM SYNOPSIS

BINDING US TOGETHER A heartfelt, inspiring narrative that is inextricably linked to the nation’s past and present, civil rights activist and public servant Alvin Brooks shares engaging, funny, and tragic stories of his life and career of advocacy in Kansas City.

DROUT 2 The sequel to the highly successful underground hit “Drout.” After King is released from prison he encounters a tragic event. The results of this start a revengeful war on the streets of Kansas City as he continues his struggles with the law while trying to finally get out of the game.

KANSAS CITY DREAMIN’ Kansas City Dreamin’ is a documentary about the African American music history of the city. It features interviews with Melissa Etheridge, Tech N9ne, Bobby Watson, Oleta Adams, Lonnie McFadden, Oscar winner Kevin Willmont, and many more. With segments on Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Janelle Monae, Big Joe Turner, and other Kansas City natives. The film celebrates Kansas City’s contribution to American music.

THE PISTOL “The Pistol” is a gripping documentary that delves into the real-life accounts of notorious gangster Kenneth Rayford. Directed by Paul Rayford, the film details the exploits of Kenneth Rayford from his time as a youth growing up on the mean streets of Kansas City, Missouri up to adulthood when he ran the streets of Kansas City. Through interviews with Kenneth himself, his accomplices, and actual news footage the documentary reveals the life of a real-underworld crime figure. “The Pistol” paints a compelling portrait of a man who dedicated his entire life to the criminal underworld, maintained a solid reputation, and actually lived to talk about it.

WHAT’S N’ KANSAS CITY? Skiem Heim, Kansas City’s official street journalist, takes you on a guided tour of the places at the heart of Kansas City’s Black culture.

UNDERNEATH: CHILDREN OF THE SUN This mind-bending Afrofuturist story embarks on a breathtaking journey of galactic politics, heritage, and destiny. In 1857, a slave in Little Dixie, Missouri is thrust into an intergalactic crisis after helping an alien from a crashed spaceship. An ultra-powerful alien artifact passes through generations of bloody fingers and inheritors here on Earth, including the present, and ultimately leads to an epic battle for control. “Underneath Children of the Sun” is St. Louis filmmaker David Kirkman’s feature film debut.
