Best Bollywood Travel Movies of All Time

#1 zindagi na milegi dobara (2011).

This one’s my all-time favorite. I’ve watched it like 10 times or more (actually I’ve lost count). I never get tired of it. It’s that amazing. So we will have to begin our list of Best Indian travel movies with this film.

3 best friends. 1 EPIC road trip. All things awesome!

ZNMD is about three friends who set on a bachelor’s trip to Spain (which they had planned during their college) to overcome their fears. They inspire the viewers to plan a Spanish vacation as they road-tripped from Barcelona to Costa Brava to Seville to Buñol to Pamplona enjoying the famous La Tomatina Festival and taking on adventures like deep-sea diving, skydiving, and a bull run along the way.

I added the ultimate road trip through Spain to my Europe bucket list before even the movie was finished. The movie has all the ingredients to revive the traveler in you. This is one of the inviting Bollywood road trip movies that will want you to pack your bags and head off.

There are a few movies that make you fall in love with your life, and ZNMD is one of those!

#2 Queen (2013)

Queen inspires all the girls out there to drop their fears, take a call, and travel solo at least once in their lifetime. The movie is about a girl who embarks on a solo trip to Paris which was supposed to be her honeymoon trip.

Rani, the main protagonist falls in love with herself while wandering around the gorgeous streets of Paris and Amsterdam . The movie beautifully redefined the concept of solo travel. The journeys we take by ourselves are the journeys we take into ourselves, indeed.

With a beautiful storyline of how three friends discover the beauty of their friendship and life while on a trip to Goa, the movie set a record.

#4 Swades (2004)

All the NRI (Non-Resident Indians) would be able to relate to the movie Swades which will make them teary-eyed. It is a movie about an NRI played by Shahrukh Khan, who works in NASA and comes to India to discover his roots. He wants to take his nanny to the US along with him.

He takes on the journey on a luxury caravan that he rides and takes through rustic rural India and shows the warmth of people. It showcases the beautiful and vibrant culture of India and the value system that we believe in.

This movie would surely be nostalgic for many living far away from their homeland and remaining in the dilemma of returning back.

This movie made me fall in love with cruise trips. Ayesha plans a 10-day cruise sailing through Turkey , Tunisia , Egypt , Spain , Italy , and France to celebrate her parent’s anniversary and the trip connects the dysfunctional family through a series of experiences.

It’s so exciting to see the characters exploring a new country every day! Being on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean can be insanely gorgeous and intensely cathartic. The visuals are inspiring and capture the essence of each country – the vibe and the culture.

#11 Jab We Met (2007)

This is another movie I never get tired of watching. With an engaging storyline, incredible actors, and a mind-boggling and life-changing journey through various cities and towns ( Ratlam , Kota , Bhatinda , Manali , and Shimla ) in India by different modes like a train, bus, rickshaw, cycle, jeep, and even truck, Jab We Met is a delight for eyes as well as the soul.

I took a trip to Rohtang Pass after seeing the snowy landscapes and a narrow road with snowy walls on either side of Rohtang Pass in Jab We Met. Such road trip movies in Bollywood do inspire you to add them to your bucket list. The two protagonists, Geet and Aditya look so adorable together that you can’t get enough of them.

I realized that trips that don’t have a plan and are spontaneous can be so much fun(risky though but hey life’s all about taking risks). Sometimes, it’s good to have no plan 🙂

indian travelling movies

#23 Rang De Basanti (2006)

The movie is based on a rebellious concept that tastefully blends the elements of history, patriotism, sacrifice, and politics. It’s primarily set in Delhi but also features the famous attractions in Jaipur and Punjab .

Remember that song ‘Masti Ki Pathshala’ from the movie? It was shot at the baoli in Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur . The beautiful mustard fields of Punjab make your heart crave to run through those fields of yellow mustard flowers. The famous Golden Temple of Amritsar , the Hola Mohalla Festival of Anandpur Sahib, and the famed Durga Sarai Fort of Ludhiana make RDB a must-watch for the right dose of wanderlust.

indian travelling movies

#24 PK (2014)

Apart from the unusual tale of an alien stuck on the earth, what caught my attention was the picture book city of Bruges in Belgium which served as a perfect setting for the love story in the first half of the movie.

A pinch of romance, a dash of comedy, a sprinkle of drama, and a lot of places – Love Aaj Kal gracefully portrays the complications of long-distance relationships.

The story takes you on a jaunt through London , Delhi , Kolkata , Punjab , and San Francisco . With beautiful visuals from the quaint villages of Punjab , narrow streets of Old Delhi , colorful locales of London , the oldest neighborhoods of Kolkata , and a sight of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco , Love Aaj Kal pushes you to leave the comforts of home and explore the world.

Its sequel, Love Aaj Kal 2 perfectly showcases the beauty of the untouched and quaint village of Chitkul in Himachal Pradesh at the Indo-Tibetan border aka The Last Village of India .

One of the last movies of my all-time favorite actress, Sridevi – English Vinglish is a heartfelt story of a woman named Shashi who’s made to feel insecure and inferior just because she doesn’t speak English by her husband and daughter.

The film touches your soul as Shashi sets on a transformational solo journey to the Big Apple (NYC) to attend the wedding of her sister’s daughter. You can enjoy iconic sights and attractions in New York from Central Park, and Times Square to Brooklyn Bridge, and Fifth Avenue. One of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, New York City makes her feel as if she belongs here.

First of all, let me tell you I have no count of the number of times I have watched this movie. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara , also known as ZNMD in short is a must watch for all you travel buffs. The story revolves around a road trip plan of three close friends.

Childhood friends Kabir , Imraan and Arjun played respectively by Abhay Deol , Farhan Akhtar and Hritik Roshan , make a plan to visit Spain in their younger days, but life happens. With everyone dealing with their own things, the plan never happened until it turns into Arjun’s bachelor trip.

3 close friends. A beautiful foreign country. Lots of fun. Innumerable memories. Yes, this movie is all of that.

The movie’s director, Zoya Akhtar takes you on a compelling visual journey that features the ravishing city of Barcelona , scuba and skydiving in Costa Brava , the famous La Tomatina festival in Bunol and Bull racing in Pamplona .

The movie is well complemented with its songs. Khaabon Ke Parinday is my personal favourite, with the visuals of the song being so pleasing to the eye. The shot of horses running along during the road trip excites me every time I watch the music video.

Must Read: women travel groups

As the movie progresses, it picks up the theme of discovering one’s self and overcoming one’s fears, which is what travel is really about. At the end of the movie, you’ll find yourselves craving for a Spanish holiday with your best friends.

2. Tamasha (2015)

IMDB Rating : 7.3/10

Photo of 7 Bollywood Travel Movies that every travel lover must watch! 2/7 by Shravan K Acharya

Imtiaz Ali , the director of this complex, yet beautiful film is probably a travel fanatic himself. I’ll tell you why I am making this assumption. Almost all his films have the characters going on some sort of trip.

The movie sets off with the meeting of the leading characters - Ved , played by Ranbir Kapoor and Tara , played by Deepika Padukone . Two very distinct characters, yet make a charming couple.

The first half of the movie features Corsica , a French Island which I never heard of before watching the film. Corsica has got quite popular with this movie being made. The stunning island features blue waters, captivating landscapes of bays and craggy peaks. “What happens in Corsica, stays in Corsica!” is what the lead characters go by as they make a pact of not telling their actual names and not falling for each other and instead decide to make fun memories during their time at the island. But, that doesn’t go as planned.

The male lead’s character, Ved is quite complex which adds to the beauty of the movie. He takes you on his own journey of fighting the cage of emotions and hardships that we all might connect on a personal level.

Another reason why I absolutely love this movie is because of its unique storytelling. Imtiaz Ali adopts a non linear screenplay, which is quite rare in Bollywood movies.

The second half of the movie also features scenes from India, Hauz Khas Village in Delhi and few shots from Shimla .

The music album is composed by AR Rahman , with Agar Tum Saath Ho being the standout pick of music lovers. The song makes you feel a lot of emotions at once, I personally never get tired of listening to it. Rest of the songs in the album are truly underrated, you’ll know as you watch this exciting movie.

3. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

IMDB : 8.1/10

Photo of 7 Bollywood Travel Movies that every travel lover must watch! 3/7 by Shravan K Acharya

A movie that was made in the starting of this century, Dil Chahta Hai made quite a revolution in two fields - Indian Cinema and India’s travel scene. Another movie about 3 friends going on a road trip, but this time to the party capital of India - Goa . Apparently Goa started getting huge amounts of tourist traffic after this movie was released, such was its impact!

Aamir Khan , Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna play the leading male roles while Preity Zinta plays the female lead role. The 3 friends discover the beauty of their friendship as they travel across various beach towns that showcases golden sand beaches, tropical coastlines, ancient forts and churches, delicious Goan cuisine. Moreover, Chapora Fort which features in the movie, is now popularly known as the ‘ Dil Chahta Hai fort ’. This rustic charm of Goa in the movie certainly proves the statement - Goa is not just a party destination.

In the later half, the movie carries the viewers to Sydney , Australia with glimpses into the Sydney Opera house . I’m pretty sure we all know about the Sydney Opera House but quite a few saw videos of the opera performance. You’ll witness that in the movie, very fascinating indeed.

The Dil Chahta Hai cast is what makes the film more special, with all the leads doing a phenomenal job in the portrayal of 3 different personalities.

The director of the film, Farhan Akhtar certainly set a benchmark in Hindi cinema during a time when movies on topics like travel were barely made. The movie has been a big inspiration to the younger generations to plan a trip to Goa . Let’s admit it, we all have made plans to go to Goa with friends, but only a few manage to make this plan happen successfully.

4. Karwaan (2018)

IMDB Rating : 7.5/10

Photo of 7 Bollywood Travel Movies that every travel lover must watch! 4/7 by Shravan K Acharya

Another road trip movie, but quite different in terms of context and storyline. Avinash , played by Dulquer Salman (his debut Hindi movie) is stuck in a boring and unfulfilling 9-5 job. Suddenly strikes the news of his father’s death in a road accident. With this new already causing a stir in his mind, Avinash has more in his plate of bad luck as he discovers that his dad’s body has been replaced by another body of an old lady.

To sort out the misunderstanding and return this old lady’s body, Avinash along with his friend Shaukat , played by late Irrfan Khan take a road trip to Kochi from Bangalore . Enroute Kochi , they make a pitstop to pick up the old lady’s granddaughter, played by Mithila Palkar . You all know Mithila Palkar right? She grew to fame after playing the female lead in the well loved Indian web series - Little Things .

The movie has a light hearted story complimented well with aesthetic lush green frames. The story turns into a journey of self discovery, 3 very different personalities of the leads come together to understand each other and connect on common grounds.

This is one of the very few travel movies that is shot in South India , featuring places like Ooty , Coimbatore , Thrissur and Kochi . After all, South India is no less than North India when it comes to touristy places.

The storyline of the film has unexpected turns and hurdles, which is what life is all about. Sometimes you end up in situations with any plans and you just have to glide past these moments and come out with beautiful memories. Though the movie has a story that leans a bit towards a serious note, Irrfan Khan’s character - Shaukat , brings in the right amount of humour to make the storytelling even more captivating.

Songs from the movie is something that needs to be talked about. The music is very soothing. New age sensation, Prateek Kuhad also makes his Bollywood debut with 2 songs in his name - Kadam and Saansein . Overall, its one of those rare movies that really hits the right notes in your mind, while most of the scenes warms up your heart!

5. Queen (2013)

IMDB Rating : 8.2/10

Photo of 7 Bollywood Travel Movies that every travel lover must watch! 5/7 by Shravan K Acharya

Queen , directed by Vikas Bahl is a movie that broke a few stereotypes in the country. Rani , played by Kangana Ranaut is from a conservative family and is ditched by her husband soon after their wedding. So, she decides to go on their honeymoon alone.

She goes on an exciting trip to Europe , mainly cities like Paris and Amsterdam . Rani finds herself alone and confused in this whole new world to her. In Paris, she meets Vijayalakshmi , an Indo-French girl played by Lisa Haydon who teaches her about love, lust and life. Later, Rani finds herself travelling to Amsterdam where she shares a hostel room with three other men who become good friends with her and they start hanging out as a group.

Kangana is the star performer of the movie as she takes us all on a journey of discovering one’s own identity and making a strong statement - “ You don’t necessarily need a partner to travel. ” It’s quite the film that will inspire us, especially girls to take up solo travelling. The music album by Amit Trivedi and Rupesh Kumar Ram has some decent songs. I really appreciate the work Vikas Bahl has put into, his first standalone movie as a director. The movie has a lot of exciting scenes and overall its a feel good movie that you shouldn’t miss.

6. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)

IMDB Rating : 7.1/10

Photo of 7 Bollywood Travel Movies that every travel lover must watch! 6/7 by Shravan K Acharya

In short know as YJHD , this movie sets off with a group of friends going on a backpacking trip to Manali . This is where the movie’s leads Naina and Kabir (aka Bunny in the movie) meet, played respectively by Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor . Bunny is accompanied by 2 friends, Aditi played by Kalki Koechlin and Avi played by Aditya Roy Kapur . In the starting half, the movie features the trekking adventures along the snowy peaks at Gulmarg, Kashmir , which in the movie is shown as Manali . With the beautiful visuals of the Himalayas , the movie is shot quite well adding value to the interesting script. During this trip, Naina discovers that she has fallen for Bunny but refrains from letting him know about it.

You will absolutely love Bunny in this film. His passion for travel and exploring the world is made clear with his job as a travel journalist. The movie later transports you to scenes from Europe , mainly Paris as you see Bunny’s exciting work life. The song Ilahi from the movie is all about Bunny enjoying the time of his life while doing what he loves, something that we all crave for.

Fast forward a bit and we are back in India , this time living the royal vibe of Rajasthan . The friends re-unite at Aditi’s royal wedding in the beautiful city of Udaipur . Here, you get glimpses of the Oberoi Udaivilas , one of the most stunning hotels in India. Most of you will definitely crave for a big fat Indian wedding in this stunning location as you watch the movie.

The Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani cast is what makes the movie exciting. Ranbir and Deepika’s chemistry on screen is phenomenal while Kalki and Aditya Roy Kapur do enough justice to their supporting characters. On screen, Bunny, Aditi and Avi are major friendship goals. I couldn’t imagine anyone else doing this movie in place of these actors.

The story is quite fresh with the visuals well complementing the script. The director of the movie, Ayan Mukherji has done a good job in making this movie something that people will keep watching and love it every single time. The music album is pretty good with songs for every occasion. Moreover, all the songs have been a major hit. The movie has a lot to offer, as the movie progresses you’ll find yourself wanting to catch up with your long lost school buddies and planning a trip with them.

7. Jab we met (2007)

IMDB Rating : 7.9/10

Photo of 7 Bollywood Travel Movies that every travel lover must watch! 7/7 by Shravan K Acharya

Last in the list is this movie I have watched numerous times and in fact it is my favourite rom-com from Bollywood. The movie starts off with a train journey where the lead characters meet in quite a unique way. Aditya , played by Shahid Kapoor is quite depressed with his dad’s death and his breakup. Geet , played by Kareena Kapoor , meets him on her train journey back to her hometown as she finds him sitting on her seat. What follows next is a rollercoaster of a ride, that makes up the later part of the movie.

The story takes a journey through various towns of Ratlam, Kota, Bhatinda, Manali and involves all sorts of mode of transportation like train, bus, rickshaw, jeep, cycle and even a truck. In the later half of the movie, it features the snowy landscapes and narrow roads of Rohtang Pass . It also features the popular Naggar Castle in one of the songs. Most of the movie was shot in North India and each city acts as a step over for both the lead characters.

Geet is one of the most loved characters in Hindi cinema. With her bubbly attitude and a mouth that never stops talking, she adds warmth to Aditya’s life who is depressed in the first half of the movie and soon starts opening up to her. Shahid and Kareena who happened to be a couple back then, gave the movie one of the best seen on screen chemistry, which makes you love the movie with all your heart.

Sometimes the trips that are spontaneous, without any sort of plan, happen to be the best trips. The movie is about this - how a single trip can be life changing with a lot of good memories to take from. It will certainly inspire you to sometimes letting go off the planning mentality and going with the flow.

That’s all folks! These are the 7 movies that you shouldn’t miss if you are a travel lover . If you happened to be on LinkedIn, let’s connect on the common love for movies and travel.

Here are the links, where you can watch the movies (Netflix and Amazon Prime) : Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara , Tamasha , Dil Chahta Hai , Karwaan , Queen , Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani , Jab we met .

I love the idea of watching a Bollywood travel movie, but I don’t know where to start!

After Bride & Prejudice  (and its luscious scenes from Goa and London) I’m at a loss for where to go next! (And does that move even count as Bollywood)?

So I asked Mayuri from Canada Crossroads , an Indian-Canadian travel expert, to help point me in the right direction! These are her recommendations for the best Bollywood travel movies.

The Best Bollywood Travel Films

Growing up Bollywood movies were my jam.

Full of fiction, yet stunning cinematography from the Swiss Alps to streets in London and night lights in New York, these best travel movies Bollywood editions to inspire wanderlust!

Bollywood films are long, typically 2 to 3 hours, and are filled with romance, dramatic locations, and scenery.

They are a perfect dose of travel and entertainment from the comfort of your living room!

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is a beautiful story about three friends  Kabir (Abhay Deol), Arjun (Hrithik Roshan), and Imraan (Farhan Akhtar), who head out on a ‘bachelor’ trip before Kabir gets married.

The movie features stunning locations in Spain: Barcelona, Costa Brava, Seville Bunol, and more.

The movie has comedy, drama, wanderlust-ing moments, and a message to live in the moment, rather than running after life goals (where Arjun wants to retire at 40).

The trip turns into an opportunity to mend fences, heal wounds, fall in love with life, and combat their worst fears.

The characters travel from Barcelona to Seville, Buñol, and various parts in Andalucia, road tripping.

The movie showcases La Tomatina Festival, bullfighting, tapas hopping, and a Bollywood version of flamenco!

Watch the trailer:

This is the Indian Queen, based on the movie’s main protagonist, Rani.

Rani literally means Queen, in Hindi. Rani (portrayed by Kangana Ranaut) decides to venture on her honeymoon alone after her fiance calls off the wedding.

Rani explores Paris, followed by Amsterdam on her solo travel journey.

She lived a sheltered life in Delhi, and the movie captures her naive side – from ‘almost’ getting her bag stolen, eating nonvegetarian food, being nervous in a co-ed/mixed hostel to meeting a friend in the Red Light District in Amsterdam.

The movie is filled with light comedy scenes, yet it opens up the difficulties of new travels, solo travels, and culture shock.

Watch the Trailer:

Rang de Basanti

A movie that reminds me so much of my time in New Delhi, where I studied history at the university – the vibrant college life and a passion to make a difference.

The movie is based on six college friends, whose life completely changes when a British documentary maker, Sue, approaches them to make a movie, based on her grandfather’s diary, highlighting the story of Indian revolutionaries.

Her grandfather served in the British Indian Army, and in the movie, she inspires them to rebel for a good cause, when Flight Lieutenant Ajay Rathod dies in an unfortunate flight mishap.

The movie highlights various parts of Delhi, including a road trip to Rajasthan; more than the locations the movie celebrates the free-spiritedness of the 6 young people, and their emotional and mental process turns them into rebels for a cause.

Watch the Trailer:

Chennai Express

A movie by Indian superstar Shahrukh Khan with Deepika Padukone, Chennai Express showcases the best scenes from southern India.

Chennai Express is a love story between a southern belle, whose father is a gangster and an average Delhi boy.

This movie is not one of Shahrukh Khan’s best, but the locations in the south along with the train journeys give you a sneak peek into the travels in this part of India.

It is a comedy-drama, filled with tons of dance and music!

The foot-tapping dance number, ‘Kashmir Tu, Main Kanyakumari,’ has been extensively shot at the Munnar Tea Plantation in Kerala, bringing it to the travel limelight.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

A love story, a story of friendships, and a story of a wanderer, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani  is a wanderlust movie, coupled with a relationship twist, the loneliness associated with travel, and finally settling down in life (in a ‘normal’ definition).

Although I do not believe in the traditional definition of “settling down”, where you drop your travels and live a routine, average life, the film beautifully brings out Bunny’s (the main protagonist Ranbir Kapoor ) zest for travel.

His room is filled with wanderlust from posters on the wall, a travel journal, and his passion for photography. He goes on to become a successful travel creator globetrotting the world.

After a few years, he misses his friends and his love Naina (Deepika Padukone), and returns to make amends.

The movie showcases amazing scenes from Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan (in India), and Paris.

Highway , directed by Imtiaz Ali, is one of the most stunningly shot Bollywood travel movies in India.

The movie stars Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda, who road trips in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent.

Highway throws the spotlight to northern India’s rugged, untouched beauty.

While London, Paris, and New York are still popular bucket list destinations, this movie adds a few more Indian gems to that list.

The movie captures the beauty of landscapes in Spiti (Himachal Pradesh), Aru Valley (Jammu and Kashmir), and various locations in Punjab.

The road trip is one of self-discovery for the female lead, who led a lavish style prior to the journey and discovers freedom after being kidnapped and trapped.

Dil Chahta Hai

Dil Chahta Hai is a story of 3 best friends Akash (Aamir Khan), Sameer (Saif Ali Khan), and Siddharth (Akshaye Khanna), and their growing relationship and discovery of life after University/college studies.

The movie is shot in India and Australia. It showcases carefree moments in Goa (India) and travels to Australia where Akash immigrates after a fallout with his friends.

Dil Chahta Hai showcases the love and relationships of various characters and their perusal of the same.

Happy Ending

Happy Ending is a movie about Yudi (Saif Ali Khan), who is suffering from writer’s block.  He embarks on a journey in search of inspiration for his next story and ends up falling in love with a best-selling author who doesn’t believe in love.

The movie was entirely shot in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California.

The song “Tu Mere Jaisa” from the movie showcases the romantic side of the beautiful city of San Francisco from the views of the stunning Bay area, crooked street and winding streets, including Palace of Fine Arts, Ghirardelli Square, Golden Gate Bridge, and downtown area.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a romantic comedy set in Las Vegas, Nevada. The story revolves around Rahul, who has lost his job and ends up befriending a free-spirited hairstylist – Riana.

They have a crazy night, Vegas-style,  get married, become friends whilst waiting for an annulment, and travel to India for a much-needed break.

The movie captures the beauty of Las Vegas at night, its architectural marvels and things to do, outside of gambling!

Namastey London

Namastey London, as the name suggests, is centered around London, so you can expect tons of beautiful scenes from the city. The movie is based on a true story.

It depicts the clash of cultures when an Indian farmer marries a girl from London and highlights their different lifestyles and perspectives.

Mayuri is the creator of Canada Crossroads – a Canada travel and living blog, where we share our journey to Canada, moving here, and exploring this wonderful country on weekends!

5 Things to Pack for Your Trip to India

Greece - Crete - Stephanie Luggage

The   Lonely Planet India   guidebook. It can be kind of a pain to find the major guidebooks once you land, or you’ll find them overpriced. I always like to pick mine up ahead of time.

An Unlocked  Cell Phone   so that you can use a local sim card while here to help navigate public transportation and when you’re on the road.

Backup Charging Bank  for your cell phone since you’ll be using it as a camera, GPS system, and general travel genie.

A Camera  since India is super photogenic. I use a mix of my  Nikon D810  and my   Samsung8  smartphone these days.

A Great Day Bag   so you can carry what you need with you (like your camera, snacks, water, sunscreen, cash, etc).

My current favorite is the  Pacsafe Citysafe , which is especially great for India because it has many anti-theft features designed to deter pickpockets.

Don’t Forget About Travel Insurance!

Before you leave for India make sure you have a valid  Travel  Insurance Policy  because accidents happen on the road.

I pay for  World Nomads,  and I happily recommend them. It’s especially important to get travel insurance if you’ll be hanging out in cities like New Dehli and Mumbai where tourists can easily become the targets of pickpockets.

I have been a paying customer of  World Nomads  for travel insurance for three years, and I happily recommend them.  If you get sick, injured, or have your stuff stolen, you’ll be happy to have the ability to pay for your medical bills or replace what’s stolen or broken.

Travel across Asia with the best movies about India sure to transport you there and enhance your trip. These aren’t all Bollywood films, either.

Image of Blue Hall at Jaipur City place with best movies about India posters like Raazi, Gandi, PK, and Dhoom

From thrillers and Indian horror films to documentaries and science fiction, this movie list will have something for everyone. Find retellings from Shakespeare and Jane Austen, movies about Indian mythology, and of course, a few Bollywood favorites.

Some of these films will include over-the-top action thrillers and sizzling romances. See which movies set in India topped the charts at box offices around the globe as well as won numerous awards. We’ll also share movies from a Western lens.

Table of Contents

Indian Cinema Versus Bollywood

Most of the movies on this list are either foreign productions or Bollywood (Hindi language) films as those are often the most readily available outside of India (especially subtitled). However, Indian cinema is vast – and, very importantly, NOT synonymous with Bollywood. In fact, each language/region-related industry has its own nickname (there’s Tollywood, Pollywood, and Sandalwood, among several others).

If you enjoy these films, I strongly encourage you to seek out more South Indian movies in particular. Indian cinema in general is not for everyone; it’s often very go-big-or-go-home. But if you like it, it can be addictive! And if you love it as much as I do, there’s a huge amount to catch up on. Bollywood is the largest film industry in the world, and the Indian film industries collectively produce around 2000 films annually. To say this list is scratching the surface is an understatement.

Afterward, you might also love these great books about India too.

25 Best Movies About India

1. bride and prejudice (2004).

Bride and Prejudice (2004) Indian movie poster with man and woman standing back to back with confetti falling

In this Pride and Prejudice musical retelling, we head to Amritsar India where the Bakshi family is searching for suitable husbands for their four headstrong daughters.

The main love interest, Will Darcy, is a wealthy American. He is visiting the country with his British-Indian university friend Balraj who is looking for a wife and Balraj’s sister. Naturally, when both parties find love, hilarity and cultural clashes ensue along with a lot of big song and dance numbers.

If you’ve always wished Pride and Prejudice had more singing and was just generally more fun, this is one of the best movies about India. The film is primarily in English (about a familiar story), making it one of the more popular movies with a Bollywood feel.

If you’ve already seen Bride and Prejudice and would like something with a similar vibe, I recommend Kandukondain Kandukondain (also called I Have Found It in English ), which is a Sense and Sensibility retelling.

2. PK (2014)

PK (2014) movie poster with man and woman wearing yellow and pink hats respectively and man is caring a small hand suitcase

PK is a heartwarming comedy about an alien who lands on Earth to do research. When the remote control of his spaceship is stolen by a godman, he is stranded. PK teams up with reporter Jaggu, and she helps him navigate this strange new planet while he searches for his remote control.

This is one of the best films for anyone who loves quirky comedies. It’s also fun for people less familiar with Indian culture as PK himself is an outsider viewing the country for the first time. The name of the film comes from the Hindi word for drunk (peekay), which everyone assumes he is as he acts so odd.

The writing duo of Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi is also responsible for the hit 3 Idiots , which is another popular Indian comedy, but I personally prefer PK .

3. Om Shanti Om (2007)

Om Shanti Om (2007) Indian movie poster with South Asian male and female dancing back to back

The year is 1977, and our main characters Om and Shanti are both actors. While Shanti is famous and the center of attention at movie premieres, Om is just a relatively unknown actor. Despite their different standings, the two become friends.

While they’re both on the set of Shanti’s latest movie, a fire breaks out, killing Shanti and fatally wounding Om. As he lies dying in hospital, he thinks of Shanti. Thirty years later, a reincarnated Om is the most famous actor in India.

But his love for Shanti has transcended space and time. He searches to see if he can find her reincarnated self, declare his love for her, and solve the mystery of her death.

Om Shanti Om has everything you could want from the dynamic catalog of Indian cinema. The drama is epic, the story is grandiose, the romance is sizzling, and the choreography is on point. It’s no wonder this was the highest-grossing Bollywood movie in the year it was released.

4. A Little Princess (1995)

A Little Princess (1995) movie poster with young white girl with blonde curls looking past a door

When her father is shipped off to WWI to fight for the British, Sara Crewe leaves her home in India to attend a girl’s boarding school in NYC (London in the book). There she and the other girls are under the strict rule of headmistress Miss Minchin.

But the charming Sara misses India dearly, and she keeps her and the other girls’ spirits up by telling them tales from The Ramayana . These scenes are set in India and beautifully recreate the story for a younger audience.

I grew up with A Little Princess , and it’s one of the first movies set in India I ever watched (even if only part of it is set there). Although the movie skewed my expectations of what India was like before I moved there, I still think this is a wonderful children’s film for anyone wanting to learn more about Indian mythology .

5. Delhi Belly (2011)

Delhi Belly (2011) movie poster with three men on cover looking back at you in white shirts and one is beat up

When Tashi is asked to deliver a package by his fiancé, he, in turn, asks his roommate Nitin to do it for him. Unfortunately, Nitin gets “Dehli belly” (a stomach upset) so he asks the other roommate Arup to do it for him.

While all this is going on, the intended recipient of the package – the ruthless gangster Somayajulu – starts to use brutal force to find out where his package has gotten to. Cue some anarchic screwball comedy antics as our main characters try to avoid getting caught for fear of being on the receiving end of some gangster violence. Oh, and Tashi has to work out whether he wants to go through with the wedding, and everyone regularly pulls a gun on everyone else.

When you’re making a comedy caper, the best movies about India have this kind of frenetic energy. This movie has a similar vibe to The Hangover : the humor is irreverent, the pace is fast, and everything feels like it could fall apart for our heroes at any moment.

6. The Jungle Book (1994)

The Jungle Book (1994) Film poster with man standing on a branch in the middle of the jungle crouching down

A young Mowgli accompanies his dad who works as a guide for the British. During one of these tours, Mowgli meets a young girl named Kitty, and the two become friends.

Tragically the party is attacked by the tiger Shere Khan. Mowgli’s father dies and Mowgli is separated from the group before being rescued by a family of wolves who raise him. Many years later, he is discovered and arrested by the British. But when he is reunited with Kitty, it leads to a treasure hunt. Adventure ensues!

This is The Jungle Book I grew up with. Before I moved to India, I watched it over and over again. While it’s not really an accurate representation of the country (especially not now) and has some really awful colonialist mentalities, it’s still one of my favorite action-adventure movies set in India. Plus, you’ll learn a few Hindi words.

7. Haider (2014)

Haider (2014) movie poster with man hugging another person with red hat

When he hears news of his father’s disappearance, a young man named Haidar returns home to Kashmir, looking for answers. What he finds is incredibly troubling. His father Hilaal is nowhere to be seen, and his mother Ghazala is now in a relationship with his uncle Khurram.

Things turn from bad to worse as Haidar meets with a former friend of Hilaal, who tells him that his father was imprisoned and killed by militants under the control of Khurram. Haidar must now fulfill his father’s last wish: to get revenge upon his uncle.

This is one of the best movies about India that adapts Shakespeare. Based on the play Hamlet , writer/producer/director Vishal Bhardwaj blends together both action and drama in a tense and very stylized way.

8. Dhoom (2004)

Dhoom (2004) movie poster with three people in jackets with motorbike

A gang of motorbike thieves is causing mayhem on the streets of Mumbai. Now, they’ve started robbing banks. The police have been unable to get the upper hand, but they’re desperate.

When no-nonsense officer Jai Dixit is called in, he enlists the help of a local mechanic and racer named Ali to help take them down. Sometimes called the Indian Fast and the Furious , the Dhoom franchise is perfect for fans of over-the-top, ridiculous action films.

9. Guru (2007)

Guru (2007) movie poster with man and woman one in front of the other and the man has a serious face, black vest, and tie

In 1950s Gujarat, young Gurukant is the son of a schoolteacher. After his father is disappointed when Guru fails to live up to his high expectations, Guru grows up determined to show his father that he can be a success.

After he marries Sujata, the daughter of a rich family, Guru has enough money to start a business and begins his rise to glory. Eventually, with the help of Sujata, her brother, and a newspaper tycoon who looks at Guru as a son, Guru’s business becomes one of the most successful in all of India.

But Guru has not always used the most legal and ethical approach to obtaining profit, and soon his empire may come crashing down around him.

Anyone familiar with rags-to-riches tales such as Citizen Kane and Scarface will find something to enjoy here, though this movie – while serious – is far from being as gritty or violent as those. It has musical numbers, after all.

10. Lagaan (2001)

Lagaan (2001) Indian movie poster with white woman in white hat, a woman wearing a red scarf over her head and a man with an open shirt

The year is 1893. When a small village in Central India suffers several years of drought and increasingly high taxes, a British military officer offers them a challenge. They can avoid paying the taxes they owe if they can beat the British at a game of cricket. If they fail, they’ll owe three times as much money.

Unfortunately for the villagers, none of them even know how to play the game in the first place, let alone win. But the young Indian farmer who accepted the challenge also befriends the sister of the officer who instigated it. Together they work to train a team of villagers and save the fate of the village for years to come.

The cinematography is enough to make this movie worth a watch. Add a few breathtaking dance routines and nail-biting sports scenes, and you’ve got one of the best movies about India.

11. Pather Panchali (1955)

Pather Panchali (1955) movie poster with young boy looking out in black and white photo

This sweeping drama is the first in a trilogy of movies that follows the life of Apu, a young boy who lives and grows up in rural Bengal in the early 20th century. During the course of this first installment, we see how Apu lives with his sister Durga, his parents Harihar and Sarbajaya, and Indir, the elderly cousin of Harihar.

Durga and Apu spend time enjoying a simple childhood, watching life go by, and occasionally interacting with visitors to their village, including traveling performers and salesmen. But eventually, the poverty of their circumstances begins to affect them more and more.

Pather Panchali looks really good considering it was made over 60 years ago. Because it was shot in black and white, the movie has a timeless quality. Together with parts 2 and 3 of the trilogy, they are considered to be some of the best movies ever made.

12. Monsoon Wedding (2001)

Monsoon Wedding (2001) movie poster with woman's partial face and eyes looking at viewerr

Through a marriage arranged by her parents, young Aditi is to be married in Delhi to Hemant Rai, the son of a family friend who lives in Texas. Aditi and Hemant have only known each other for a few weeks, and Aditi is still working through her feelings with a previous lover.

On top of this, all of the extended family are arriving for the wedding, and each person has baggage of their own to add to the ensuing chaos. With guests and organizers falling in love, jewelry mishaps, secret affairs, and family members on the brink of leaving forever, will everything work out for everyone?

It’s a classic family-centric comedy-drama, with a host of colorful characters and some lavish sets and costumes thrown in. Monsoon Wedding is one of the more feel-good movies about India on this list. Find even more wedding-themed films .

13. The Darjeeling Limited (2007)

The Darjeeling Limited (2007) movie poster with three brothers, one holding box with skull and bones, one wearing bandages, and one wearing flower necklace

As one of the Western-made movies set in India on this list, The Darjeeling Limited has something of a unique flavor to it, especially as it was directed by Wes Anderson.

On this idiosyncratic adventure, we follow three brothers as they each come to terms with their own individually messy lives, as well as the recent accidental death of their father.

As they journey across India by train (the name of which gives us the movie title), they encounter all manner of different experiences, from the traumatic to the joyous, despite the fact that they really don’t get along well together.

Some may be put off by Anderson’s very distinct directing style, but the overall experience is a great portrait of Indian culture from Western eyes. Make sure to watch the accompanying short film Hotel Chevalier first, for the complete experience.

14. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

Slumdog Millionaire (2008) movie poster with woman running and man's face

Jamal Malik grew up in the Juhu slum of Mumbai. When he becomes a contestant on India’s version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire , and starts to win, he attracts a lot of attention. So much so that he is brought in for questioning by the police under suspicion of cheating.

As the film unfolds, stories from Jamal’s childhood come to life as he reveals how exactly he knew each of the answers.

Adapted from the novel of the same name, this feel-good drama was nominated for 10 Academy Awards upon its release and won 8, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

15. Million Dollar Arm (2014)

Million Dollar Arm (2014) Movie Poster with man holding clothing over shoulder and building and water behind him

J B Bernstein, an American sports agent travels to India to scout for fresh baseball talent amidst India’s cricket-obsessed population. He figures they’re close enough and hopes to find the next big players through a contest open to the public.

He finds two players who have never played cricket or baseball in their lives: Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel.

Based on a true story, this heartwarming sports comedy is one of the best movies about India for anyone hoping to visit and wanting some insight into what first impressions will be like. The first half of this film is immensely relatable and funny to anyone who has experienced the unique culture shock of India.

Admittedly, I was less invested in the second half when the story moves to the USA and the drama focuses more on the White characters. But the first half is so much fun that I rewatch it regularly.

16. Gandhi (1982)

Gandhi (1982) film poster with image of Gandhi surrounded by crowds of people

This is a historical biography of the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi – later known as Mahatma Gandhi – and how his non-violent protests resulted in the liberation of India from British rule.

We follow Gandhi from his humble beginnings as a lawyer in southern Africa, where an incident on a train led him to begin to fight for the civil rights of Indians. From there, he returns to India as something of a hero. He is asked to continue his humanitarian efforts in India’s fight for independence against the British Empire.

This is one of the truly epic movies set in India. The scale is immense, and the amount of work visible on the screen speaks for itself.

17. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001)

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) movie poster with family of three men in black outfits and three women in red saris

Rahul and Rohan are brothers and live with their very rich parents. Rahul is adopted, and everyone knows this except for Rohan.

One day, Rahul falls in love with Anjali, a spirited girl from a low-income family. When his father Yash arranges for him to be married to a much wealthier family friend, he disobeys and marries Anjali, causing a rift in the family; Yash disowns Rahul, causing him to relocate with Anjali to London.

Years later, Rohan takes it upon himself to try and reunite the family and mend the years of hurt caused by the separation of Rahul and his parents.

Movies about India often involve family drama, and this is one of the most popular, with a highly anti-classist message that runs throughout.

18. Tumbbad (2018)

Tumbbad (2018) India Movie Poster with person walking toward red glow

When the Goddess of Prosperity created her divine offspring, the firstborn of them, Hastar, tried to steal her gold and grain. After being caught by the other gods, he was spared on the condition that no one would ever worship him.

Since that day, he has slept in the Divine Goddess’ womb. However, in the village of Tumbbad in the early 20th century, a temple is built to Hastar in defiance of the ancient rule. Now, three generations of a family must deal with the supernatural fallout of this act and try to resist the lure of the golden coins that they receive for helping Hastar in his endeavors.

Visual creativity, good production value, and a period setting place this Indian horror movie above many of its contemporaries. Tumbbad is an enjoyable morality tale against the corruption of greed.

19. The House Next Door (2017)

The House Next Door (2017) Movie poster with man and woman's face above a creepy dark house with lights on

Young couple Krish and Lakshmi live a happy life in their house in the mountains. When some new neighbors – the teenage Jenny, her half-sister Sarah, and their stepmother – move into the house next door, things begin well enough.

But soon strange things start to happen. Things that can’t be explained by reason or science. Eventually, it becomes clear that paranormal forces are at work. Vengeful spirits are determined to wreak revenge on those who now inhabit the house next door and anyone who gets in their way.

There are some tense moments in this visually impressive Indian horror movie. The special effects are on point, and the overall concept will give plenty of horror fans the right chills, especially if you crave haunted house films .

20. Evaru (2019)

Evaru India Movie Poster with man wearing glasses holding shard of glass with woman's face in it

In a seemingly open and shut case, high-ranking police officer Ashok Krishna is killed in self-defense by Sameera Maha, a woman he was attempting to rape. Overseeing the case is Sub-Inspector Vikram Vasudev, a not-so-clean cop who is hired by Sameera’s lawyer and told to tie the whole thing up quickly.

However, as he digs deeper into the case and interviews Sameera in order to establish her innocence, things start to become less certain. Before long the whole event is called into question, and everyone seems to be lying about something.

With plenty of twists and turns to keep viewers guessing, this is one of the best thrillers from among the South Indian movies available.

21. 99 (2019)

99 Indian Movie poster with Indian man sitting an looking up and Indian woman looking off to the side with long hair and red lips

During a high school reunion, travel photographer Ramachandra’s friends mention his high school sweetheart Jaanu is returning from Singapore. Overcome with nostalgia from the reunion, he decides to meet up with Jaanu, and the two begin to reminisce while catching up on their current lives.

This Kannada-language romantic movie is a remake of the 2018 Tamil film 96 , which is considered one of the top Indian movies with cult followings. Unfortunately, 96 is difficult to find outside of India, so 99 is the best I can offer. But don’t worry, this is still one of the best South Indian movies for romance lovers.

22. Baahubali: The Beginning (2015)

Baahubali: The Beginning movie poster with arm and hand holding baby up over water with clouds in sky

Set in the ancient central-Indian kingdom of Mahishmati, a woman risks her life to save a baby who is saved and adopted by a neighboring tribe. When that man grows up and falls in love with a fierce warrior woman, he finds himself involved in a decades-long conflict as he confronts the truth of his own past.

For fans of epic fantasy movies, Baahubali: The Beginning (and its sequel) should be top of your list. It is one of the highest-grossing South Indian movies of all time for a reason. If you love the film, there is also a prequel book series by Anand Neelakantan.

23. Raazi (2018)

Raazi movie poster with woman holding a gun and aiming it at the viewer

Based on a true story, Raazi is set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The film follows Sehmat Khan, the daughter of Hidayat Khan, an Indian freedom fighter. Upon her father’s wishes, she becomes an agent of India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). As an agent, she becomes a spy and marries into a Pakistani military family in order to get classified information for India.

This spy thriller quickly became one of the top-grossing films about India with a female lead upon its release in 2018. It is easily one of the best movies about the India-Pakistan conflict.

24. Paan Singh Tomar (2012)

Paan Singh Tomar (2012) Indian movie poster with man charging forward with weapon on back

Told mostly in flashback during an interview with a reporter, we learn the story of the life of Paan Singh Tomar, a real-life Indian athlete turned dacoit (a bandit). Paan Singh was responsible for wreaking havoc in the Chambal Valley in the second half of the twentieth century.

In the 1950s, Paan Singh worked in the military and became the reigning 3000m steeplechase champion for 7 years in a row. However, once he retires from military service, he returns home and becomes involved in a dispute over his family’s property. When the dispute becomes violent and his family is attacked, Paan Singh vows to become baaghi – a rebel against order – and begins his second life.

Upon its release, Paan Singh Tomar was a huge hit with Indian audiences and remains one of the best movies about India to date.

25. Asuran (2019)

Asuran 2019 Indian Movie poster with image of Indian man wearing green hat and he has a beard and mustache and is wearing a brown shirt

When Velmurugan, the son of Sivasaami, a Dalit farmer, murders an upper-caste landlord in retaliation for trying to take his family’s land, it sparks a caste war in Tamil Nadu.

Asuran is one of the best Tamil-language South Indian movies. It addresses India’s class politics and is based on the real-life 1968 Kilvenmani massacre. Like Vetrimaaran’s other films, Ausuran does not shy away from the realities of violence and can be a difficult watch.

If you’re interested in the story but would rather read about graphic violence than watch it, the film is based on the book Vekkai by Poomani.

Writer Dagney McKinney white female with light brown hair wearing a purple shirt and smiling

Dagney McKinney

Dagney (pronouns: any) is a neurodivergent writer and book nerd who is drawn to all things weird and macabre. She also loves anything to do with fast cars, unhinged anti-heroes, and salt. When she isn’t working or reading, you’re likely to find her eating Indian food, playing board games, or hiding out somewhere dark and quiet, stuck down an internet rabbit hole. The easiest way to win her over is through cats and camels.

The movie is what you would call a perfect ‘Bollywood Masala’ movie with action, adventure, drama, romance, music, entertainment and makes for a fun-filled 3-hour cinematic ride where you get to experience the best of South Indian landscapes! If you ever needed a reason to visit the beautiful region of South India, then this is it…

10. Highway (2014)

Highway

The movie ‘Highway’ released a couple of years ago and stood out from mainstream cinema due to a lot of reasons. The story of Veera and Bhati is fondly remembered today for its unconventional story, ground-breaking performances from the lead actors, but most importantly for its picturizations of the beautiful locales of Kashmir and Himachal. The movie featured beautiful locales of Pahalgam, Aru Valley, Spiti and many such hidden gems situated around the hilly regions of the North. Highway would not have been the movie we know today, if not for the snow-clad mountains, the hills and valleys of Pahalgam, the wide highways of the North, the trundling noisy trucks, the ever-flowing icy-cold rivers and the lush greenery of the beautiful Aru valley, which had a story to tell of its own. When was the last time we escaped from the hum-drum of our city life to just sit back, relax and take in the natural beauty around us? Too long… isn’t it? It’s time now to kick off all our worries and take a journey through mountains like ‘Veera’ from Highway…

11. Queen (2014)

Queen

This movie redefined solo travel and gave many solo women travellers, the much-needed boost they were waiting for! ‘Queen’ showed us that it is okay to travel solo and how your experiences can build you as a better person while you discover yourself. Queen narrates the story of Rani (beautifully portrayed by Kangna Ranaut) who is abandoned by her fiancée, a day before the wedding; however, instead of wallowing in self-pity, she takes the bold decision of going on her honeymoon trip alone. She travels to Paris & Amsterdam and as she falls in love with these glorious cities, she also learns to fall in love with herself! The same ‘Eiffel Tower’ that scares her at first and brings about unsavoury memories, later enchants her and overwhelms her, as she admires its splendid spectacle by night. Taking us through the beautiful lanes of Paris, Amsterdam and even Delhi, this movie taught us that sometimes the journeys we take by ourselves are some of the best experiences of our lives.

12. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2014)

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Admit it! You watch this movie every time it comes on TV and you probably even know the dialogues by heart, as you mime them along with Naina and Bunny. Such is the beautiful charm and nostalgia of this wonderful movie that it brings along a breath of fresh (mountain) air, very much like the snowy hill stations featured in the movie. The first half of the movie took us through breathtaking landscapes of Gulmarg, Kashmir (portrayed as Manali in the movie) and urged the traveller in us to go hiking and trekking through the snowy hills of the Himalayas. The second half charmed us with royal palaces, magnificent forts of Rajasthan and managed to give us some serious destination wedding goals. The movie also inspired many of us to take up travel journalism and live a wanderlust life like Bunny! Capturing Srinagar, Gulmarg, Manali, Rajasthan and France like never before with an engaging storyline and amazing actor line-up, ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’ is an absolute feel-good movie that inspires us to catch up with long-lost school buddies and just travel…

13. PK (2014)

PK

Sure enough, the movie scores brownie points for Aamir Khan who perfectly portrayed an alien trying to make his way back home; but what we also loved about the movie is the picture-perfect city of Bruges, Belgium which served as the setting for a beautiful love story between the characters of Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput. PK created a milestone as it proved to be the first Bollywood movie that was shot here! The splendid canals, beautiful landscapes, colonial buildings and cobbled streets, made us fall in love with this city instantly. We even imagined cycling through the charming streets of Bruges, as we wished for our own love story to blossom in these picturesque landscapes. The movie also took us through the lanes and by-lanes of Delhi featuring some very popular and interesting sights such as Agrasen ki Baoli, Chandi Chowk, Connaught Place etc. The first few scenes of the movie, where PK (Aamir Khan) lands on Earth and begins exploring the place, has been filmed in the colourful and rustic town of Mandawa. A gem of a location that beautifully showcases the rich culture of Rajasthan, Mandawa is slowly becoming a popular tourist destination.

14. Tamasha (2015)

undefined

What happens in Corsica, stays in Corsica! This movie showcased the picture-perfect landscapes of Corsica and India fell in love! The beautiful locations and mesmerizing views were enough to make this beautiful island in France, a part of our travel list. We couldn’t believe an island could be so perfect; turquoise blue waters, glittering bays, stunning landscapes, lush greenery, craggy peaks but most of all, a unique culture bursting with local flavour and medieval charm. It seemed like the perfect getaway for the main characters of the movie and it seemed like the perfect vacation spot for everyone who watched this movie! The movie also featured the cultural hotspot of Delhi, Hauz Khas village which was featured in a heartfelt song. Interestingly enough, the female lead character’s inspiration to visit Corsica came from the famous comic book, Asterix in Corsica. Now, it’s time to make ‘Tamasha’ your inspiration and visit the breath-taking island of Corsica!

15. Piku (2015)

Piku

Piku touched hearts, in a way which we did not know was possible! It explored a turbulent yet beautiful father-daughter relationship set against the backdrop of modern, fast-paced Delhi and the quaint yet beautiful, Kolkata city. Rarely has a movie ticked all the right boxes when it comes to an engaging story, great chemistry between its actors and beautiful picturizations which slowly transcend into the story and become the soul of the movie. The road trip from Delhi to Kolkata tests the patience of the lead characters and yet manages to bring them together, by the end of the journey. The pit-stop in between at Varanasi not only explores the quiet charm of the spiritual city but also serves as the perfect setting for a heart-to-heart chat between the lead characters. Finally, the city of Kolkata, replete with its old world colonial charm manages to take our breath away and we have Piku, the movie, to thank us for that!

With so many amazing destinations and movie inspirations that encourage us to travel, it is difficult to sit still and settle down in one place! Someone has rightly said, “ If we were meant to stay in one place, we’d have roots instead of feet. ” If you are waiting for that one day when you can set off to explore the world, these Bollywood movies will surely give you the push that you need to travel and explore the world!

Years of writing school essays, descriptive theories for college papers and elaborate recipes for my hotel management practicals, made me realize one thing - I did not mind the writing, in fact, I loved it! Probably the reason why my blogs tend to exceed the word limit, as I pour my heart out and just keep on doing what I love to do... Write! There... I exceeded my word limit yet again! So, in 1 line only... An amateur blogger and enthusiastic traveller with dreams of writing my own book someday :)

Watch These Movies Before You Visit India

Let the cinematic universe inspire your next trip to India. Add one of these movies to your queue and you’ll be ready for an unforgettable holiday.

indian travelling movies

Enchanting. Vibrant. Immersive. These are just a few words travellers use to describe their experience of visiting India: it may sound intimidating, and it can be, but in a world wrought with travel cliches and over-trodden destinations, India remains truly unique and completely worthy of your attention.

Without a doubt, the country is a cinematic experience in and of itself, one where the story and its cast changes depending on whether you turn right or left. Embrace the star quality of India by indulging in our list of these must-watch movies before jumping on a plane to meet your tour group in New Delhi!

1. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

  • Why I like it: An enchanting fairy tale that takes place in Jaipur and one that never asks too much from its viewers – other than to be completely and utterly transported

Okay, so every list like this one has this movie on it, I know. But hear me out, because there’s a good reason it’s so popular for would-be visitors to India. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel tells the story of a small group of British retirees who, for varying reasons, decide to live out their retirement in a hotel in India, run by an eager up-and-comer local, played by Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire fame.

The cast is largely comprised of acclaimed British national treasures (Dame Judi Dench anyone?) and the setting itself serves as an additional costar. When the story begins, the brits board a flight to India, each with their own set of emotional baggage. Eventually, the country helps them to confront their individual demons; if you’ve travelled before, you know that being truly displaced is the most thorough way to accomplish this.

Overall, I love this movie because it serves as a window into the challenges and delights of being a foreigner in such a loud, colourful and fundamentally different place like India. Watch it and you’ll be convinced that there’s no right or wrong age to step outside of your comfort zone — and no better place to step than in India!

I should mention that at times the movie does swerve a little too closely into the colonialist/orientalist territory. “Just how exactly will India manage to win over the old, cranky, xenophobic Muriel?!” But consider this film for what it is — a wish-fulfillment love letter to an idyllic version of India — and you won’t be disappointed!

2. The Jungle Book

  • Why I like it: There are talking animals, Bill Murray and the entirely computer-generated environment (almost) perfectly embodies India’s lush jungles

I’ll be honest right off the bat and say that I was not a fan of the original Jungle Book . I thought it moved a bit slow and the animation was too flat to hold my tiny attention span when I first watched as a kid (and no, I don’t care if the movie was made in 1967. Fight me). The new Jungle Book , however, jumps off the screen, the ending is different (better) and the pacing is improved despite the longer run time. Also, I surrender my complete and unwavering trust to Jon Favreau and anything he does to improve franchises from my childhood.

But back to why it’s perfect to watch in advance of your trip to India…

You almost wouldn’t believe that the entire thing was shot on a sound stage in Los Angeles because the setting feels alive, immersive and dense – just like India’s real countryside. The production travelled to around 1,000 remote jungle locations in India to photograph them and use them as reference for post-production and trust me when I say it shows. If you make it through this movie and somehow don’t find yourself ready to add a jungle safari to your tour itinerary then I have to assume you have no pulse and are simply dead.

3. The Lunchbox

  • Why I like it: Better than your usual mishap-turned-friendship-turned-love story, introduced people to one of the most impressive and complicated delivery systems in the world, “the dabbawalas,” perfectly encapsulates Mumbai’s intensity

The Lunchbox tells the perfectly simple story of two strangers suffering in their own ways, who come together thanks to a lucky mistake by the awe-inspiring lunchbox delivery system in India. The story doesn’t waste a moment painting an accurate portrait of the central role food places in the lives of everyday Indians, using it as a mechanism to drive these two strangers closer together.  If you aren’t drooling throughout the film, especially when leading lady Illa prepares homecooked paneer for her mystery recipient Saajan, are you even paying attention?

This movie will have you rooting for the two leads to just get together already, leave your stomach rumbling, and hold you in complete and utter awe at the sheer complexity of the country’s massive delivery service system – which has been studied and praised by institutions like Harvard Business School for its high level of service and nearly flawless operating system.

4. Monsoon Wedding

  • Why I like it: Bollywood-level wedding shenanigans, great ensemble casts, and last minute dramatic swells that add real stakes amongst all the fun and colour

Pretty much everyone knows that Indian weddings are no joke and Monsoon Wedding does an excellent job of reinforcing this very true stereotype, to the absolute delight of viewers. There are so many stories, each equally intriguing, dancing around the main event: the impending arranged marriage of Hermant and Aditi.

The bride and groom-to-be’s families each prepare for the special day in their own ways, falling in love, declaring that love, and, in some cases, making tough decisions that perfectly summarizes the critical importance of loyalty and family in Indian society. As you might imagine, the colours and set pieces are brilliant and stunning in their own right. The entire film takes place in New Delhi, which is an appreciated consistency in an otherwise chaotic tale of romance and family drama.

Essentially Monsoon Wedding is one epic tale of romance that never stops being alive for one second, not unlike New Delhi itself. Consider it good practice for your own exploration of India’s capital city.

Watch Monsoon Wedding on Amazon Prime

5. Octopussy

  • Why I like it: Classic spy film, unproblematic James Bond (I’m looking at you Sean Connery), and action-packed adventure through an especially mystical India with a lavish floating palace

The James Bond series has included some real highs and lows and I’d put this one squarely in the middle. Let’s just say I’m not recommending this one for its Oscar-winning storytelling or exceptionally misplaced tonal choices (just google “Bond clown costume.” I’ll wait). Instead, you’ll be gripped by the 13th installment in the James Bond series thanks to its impressive set pieces, specifically the ones in India.

I promise you’ll be gripping your shaken-not-stirred cocktail in both hands when Bond first arrives in Udaipur, India, infiltrating its floating palace and meeting the titular Octopussy for the first time. There are of course noteworthy scenes in Rajasthan near the beginning of Bond’s adventure, but hey, nothing beats a floating palace. The rest of the film is gripping in ways that are both good and bad but at the very worst it’s a campy spy thriller that is saved almost entirely by the choice to take place in India.

Watch Octopussy on Amazon Prime

6. Darjeeling Limited

  • Why I like it: Wes Anderson, train rides and a so-obvious-it-must-be-ironic-set-piece, actual baggage as a metaphor for emotional baggage

Wes Anderson receives awards even for his bad movies, so of course Darjeeling Limited, a film about three estranged brothers coming to terms with life, death, and abandonment while on a trip through India, was always going to be on this list. It’s actually a really good movie, with India honoured by Anderson instead of fetishized.

The backdrop, not unlike other films on this list, is just as important as the characters themselves. Train travel in India is more or less a staple of local life, so it makes sense and is fun to see this method of transportation take centre stage in the story. There’s also a fun scene at the beginning where one of the brothers (played by everyone’s favourite bean pole, Adrien Brody) just catches the train and slowly makes his way through the different classes of the compartments, quickly and gently illustrating just how train travel works in this part of the world.

Travel on: Train & Rail Tours & Trips in India

There’s a lot of meaning dripping in each and every scene, which threatens to become obnoxious at some points but ends up never taking it too far. Eventually, the train takes them from Mumbai to a Himalayan monastery and by the end of the whole thing, you’ll come to realize – alongside the three brothers – that India often delivers you an adventure completely unlike the one you were planning. And that it’s ultimately for the better.

Watch Darjeeling Limited on Amazon Prime

So what do you think of this list?

Am I missing any essentials that you consider mandatory viewing for a trip to India? And before you rush to the comments section to say “But what about Slumdog Millionaire?!” I intentionally left it out, not because I don’t like the movie but because it’s already on every list EVER and my 2016 resolution was to become a fully-realized original artist and it’s 2019 so I’m 3+ years behind on this.

So let me know what you think of my selection below!

17 Best Bollywood Movies on Travel and Road Trips

Bollywood films are often known for a one-dimensional theme or a plot. While you may find a romance angle or a couple of song sequences within the film.

It is not often the main element if the film is an action-packed drama, crime thriller, or a suspense film. There are very few films that explore multi-dimensional plots specifically around adventure theme. Today, I will share some of my best films in Bollywood based on travel and road trips.

These films are not all and so travel films or only about road trips. Instead, travelling or the road trip plays a supporting character in the film while there’s either a love story, coming-of-the-age drama, or something else.

Best Bollywood Movies Based on Travel and Road Trips

Travelling or going on a road trip is always fascinating. Bollywood films do have such elements in the movie infractions but it is very rare that such moments are fully explored. So, here I present to you some of the best Bollywood films on travel and road trips that you can not only enjoy but also take you on an amazing journey like never before.

So let’s begin with the list.

Queen (2014)

Queen is an interesting film about a bride left at the altar (mandap as per Hindu ritual). Well, in a normal scenario, the girl gets depressed, tries to commit suicide, or hates all men. However, the film Queen takes a different angle. In this film, the bride decides to go to her pre-planned honeymoon alone and enjoy her life rather whining about it. Directed by Vikas Bahl, the film features Kangana Ranaut in the titular role.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

In school days or even during the college days, we often make a pact with our friends about a road trip. Most often, due to the hardships of life and other priorities, we aren’t able to fulfill such promises. Well, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara reminisces such moments in life where three distant school friends unite to fulfill their pact to travel the world as they promised. The film features Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, and Abhay Deol as friends whereas Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koelchin play the female leads.

Qarib Qarib Single (2017)

Directed by Tanuja Chandra, Qarib Qarib Single is a fun yet the adventurous story of two strangers who meet each other on a dating site. From there, a couple of events lead the two main characters of the film to embark on a journey together and eventually fall for one another. The film features Irrfan Khan and Parvathy in the lead roles. The best element of the film besides the innocent chemistry between the leads is their journey to different places in India.

Chalo Dilli (2011)

It is often said that travelling leads to many amazing stories. When Mihika misses her flight to Delhi from Mumbai, she has to team up with Manu Gupta to reach Delhi on time to meet her husband Lt. Col. Vikram Rana. Well, it seems all ok at first but eventually, a simple road trip turns in to a lot of fun and difficulties while discovering the true colors of India . Directed by Shashant Shah, the film features Vinay Pathak and Lara Dutta in the lead roles, whereas Akshay Kumar plays a cameo as Mihika’s husband.

Dhanak (2015)

Directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, Dhanak is a 2015 film featuring the life of two young siblings who get on a journey on a specific mission to meet Shahrukh Khan who is shooting in Rajasthan. The mission is not only to meet the star but also ask him for help as one of the kids is visually impaired. Whether they will meet the superstar or not forms the rest of the story.

Anjana Anjani (2010)

Anjana Anjani is a cute love story of two youngsters who meet each other when they are on the verge of ending their life. They eventually get a new motivation from one another to give another shot at life and eventually fall for each other. Directed by Siddharth Anand, the film features Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles.

Tamasha (2015)

Tamasha is a 2015 Hindi romantic drama film featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film tells the story of Ved Vardhan Sahni in three different stages of his life. The film has a unique way of storytelling where the parts of Ved’s life are portrayed in a non-linear way. The main element of the film is the two main leads trip to Corsica.

Piku (2015)

You don’t need to travel lavishly or to exotic places to have an adventure ride. A simple road trip between Delhi to Kolkata can do the trick as shown in the 2015 film Piku. The film tells the story of a father-daughter duo who embark on a journey from Delhi to Kolkata aided by a taxi business owner. The short-tempered daughter, the grumpy father, and the happy go lucky taxi business owner make an unusual combination of travel buddies but it all results in a fun ride for the audience. Directed by Shoojit Sircar, the film features Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Irrfan Khan in the lead roles.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

Dil Chahta Hai is a film that gave rise to the trend for friends to take a road trip to Goa . Since the film release, every college group or school group is making plans or visiting Goa by road to enjoy the same way as Akash, Sid, and Sameer. Directed by Farhan Akhtar, the film features Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, and Akshaye Khanna in the lead roles.

Jab We Met (2007)

Jab We Met is an interesting Romantic Bollywood comedy film about a love story between two people who met on a train. 18 Bollywood Movies That Will Inspire You To Travel

To travel is to live. Travelling is almost like a therapeutic exercise which heals us with the beauty and experiences of the unexplored world. We meet different people, interact with different cultures and the memories we carry back are just priceless.

Films act as a getaway from the tough realities of life. Those three hours spent in a dark theatre open your window to fantasies. And when those films have beautiful, picturesque locations, you just want to pack your bags and travel. After all, it isn’t always bad thing to get inspired by movies, eh?

Here’s a list of Bollywood films that will make you want to leave everything else and just travel:

1. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

The film took us through a road trip in Spain. The lazy road travel, the breathtaking deep-sea-diving, the super-fun  Tomatina festival, and the liberating sky-fall were all just to die for. It makes you want to travel with your friends and discover your own self. In fact, this film has made Spain a popular travel destination for Indians.

2. Queen (2013)

This film takes the protagonist and our imagination to Paris and Amsterdam. She discovers her own identity and learns that you don’t necessarily need a partner to have fun in your life. She doesn’t let her honeymoon tickets go waste and decides to take the trip solo and this experience changes her life forever. She gains a new perspective about living life on her own terms.

3. Tamasha (2015)

Tamasha brought to life the beautiful city of Corsica for us Indians. The film showed the place so beautifully that each frame looked like a picture post card. It looked like a perfect getaway for the characters and felt like it would be perfect for us as well. The local flavour was just enough to make Corsica your dream destination, a place where nobody would know you and you won’t know anybody either.

4. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

This film has set travel goals for a whole generation. While the movie is remembered for a whole lot of other things, the idea of friends travelling to just chill on the beaches of Goa is stuff vacation goals are made of! Such was the influence of the movie, Goa became the national holiday spot for the young generation and still remains so.

5. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

This is where the travel craze started. Raj and Simran meet on a Euro trip, fall in love and after a short trip to the mustard fields of Punjab, live happily ever after. The landscapes of Europe are lavish, and the film captures that beautifully. Even the second half of the film, which is shot in Punjab, has inspired a generation to get a picture clicked in the mustard fields.

6. Finding Fanny (2014)

Finding Fanny showed Goa like no other film. There were no rave parties in this one, instead it showed lesser known outskirts of the state. The virgin locations in the film became popular overnight. If you’re planning a peaceful trip to the state, this film will totally inspire you.

indian travelling movies

7. Highway (2014)

This film was a journey that you didn’t want to end. The theatre felt like a window seat of a vehicle and you just didn’t want the vehicle to stop. A bride-to-be is kidnapped by a local goon who takes her through roads she has never seen before. It captures the remote Sangla Valley in Himachal Pradesh and drives over to the Aru Valley and Chandanwari near Pahalgam. And it’s not just the scenic beauty of the mountains, the essence of the film is travel and is beautifully conveyed even in the plains of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab.

indian travelling movies

8. Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)

This film was shot on a cruise ship which traveled through Turkey, Spain and Tunisia. The sequences on the cruise ship had beautiful ocean in the background and stunningly dressed people in the foreground. And you’re still looking for reasons to set off for a vacation?

indian travelling movies

9. Chennai Express (2013)

Chennai Express might be known for several other (not-so-flattering) reasons but the film was surely a visual treat. From the majestic Dudhsagar Falls in Goa to the lush hill town of Munnar in Kerala, each frame of the movie was a sight to behold in this film. The landscape shown in the film will surely make you want to be there in person.

indian travelling movies

10. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)

Bordered by dense forests and sparkling in their white glory, Gulmarg’s snow-clad peaks are just breathtaking. Even though Gulmarg was passed off as Manali in the film, the film inspired bag-packers to leave everything aside and go on a trek with friends in this region. The film’s second half captures the beautiful palaces and monuments of Rajasthan. The theme wedding in Udaipur showed that Rajasthan is so much more than just deserts.

indian travelling movies

11. Jab We Met (2007)

The film starts off with a train journey from Mumbai and makes some interesting stops at Ratlam, Kota, Bhatinda, Manali and Simla. Each city acts as a stop-over for the characters and the story of the film. This film surely made train journeys look really cool!

indian travelling movies

12. Chalo Dilli (2011)

Two characters from drastically different backgrounds have to travel together by road and train. The destination is Delhi and the road trip makes them both see what they’ve been missing in their lives. The highways they take and the people they meet is what traveling is all about – having new experiences.

indian travelling movies

13. Piku (2015)

A father-daughter duo travels with a taxi company owner from Delhi to Kolkata in this road trip movie. The highways they travel make us want to be on a road trip ASAP. We watch them stopping over in Varanasi which looks beautiful at night and when they finally reach Kolkata, the city’s landscape is instantly likeable.

indian travelling movies

14. London Paris New York (2012)

This film is the journey of two characters through these three cities. They first meet in London while waiting to catch the next flight. They meet again in Paris and then finally get united in New York. These three cities are probably on the bucket list of all of us and the film just captures that fantasy to perfection.

indian travelling movies

15. Anjaana Anjaani (2010)

The protagonists decide to end their lives but before that they must travel a little. Travelling is just the best way to live and what better place to go and explore Las Vegas. The road trip they take from New York to Las Vegas is just stunning to look at. And the barren lands too look breathtaking.

indian travelling movies

16. Raanjhanaa (2013)

The holy city of Varanasi showed in this film felt so pure in its spirit. The religious divide, the local culture and colour of the city was beautifully captured in the first half of the film. Even the dialect used in the film was true to the city. Banares was not just a location for this film, the city was featured like a character.

17. Road, Movie (2010)

Vishnu (Abhay Deol) is on a journey across the scenic state of Rajasthan to deliver his father’s antique, colourful truck to a local museum. The journey proves transformative for every traveler, but especially for Vishnu who discovers life, love and laughter on the Indian highway. This film introduces you to a different Rajasthan. It is rustic, rural & yet enigmatic.

The 13 Best Indian Action Movies on Netflix Right Now

Don't miss out on these great movies from Bollywood!

One of the best things about Netflix, and arguably streaming in general, is its ability to promote films that would otherwise be difficult for the average consumer to track down. While the dreaded algorithm has its issues for sure, it's allowed a vast content library of films from around the world to gain more popularity and viewership than they would otherwise.

India, the country with the highest film output in the world, has always been a big name in the world of cinema but over the past decade has become something of an international powerhouse. Regardless of what language you are watching their films in, it's unmistakable where you are watching them from, and their action films in particular are some of the best out there. The best Indian action movies on Netflix represent the best, boldest, and most entertaining of the genre , and will have viewers binge-watching for countless hours.

13 'Beast' (2022)

Directed by nelson dilipkumar.

Not to be confused with a similarly named 2022 film about Idris Elba fighting a tiger, Beast is best described as " Die Hard in a mall" as it follows an ex-RAW agent who aims to rescue hostages in a shopping mall that has been overcome by terrorists. It's as basic a story as you can get for these kinds of films, so it lives or dies on its action.

But what action! A crowd-pleaser with a great lead performance, Beast is the kind of film where you are just waiting to turn your brain off and enjoy the ride. Sure, it's not going to win any awards, but it's too much fun to ignore, and its climax is as ridiculous as you would expect.

Watch on Netflix

12 'Saaho' (2019)

Directed by sujeeth.

India really seems to love its crime films. This isn't necessarily a bad thing though if audiences get movies like Saaho , a film about two covert operatives who discover a brewing gang war that could have disastrous consequences.

Admittedly, Saaho 's story goes to absurd places, but like a lot of films from this era of Indian cinema, that comes to be expected , and it's a ton of fun regardless. When the actual movie itself is this well-made to boot - the action sequences and VFX in particular are stellar – it's hard to complain, and its performances are great across the board, making it a must-see Indian flick on Netflix .

11 'Sooryavanshi' (2021)

Directed by rohit shetty.

As the 4th installment of Rohit Shetty 's so-called "Cop Universe", Sooryavanshi works as a good introduction to the series as it stands alone as its own story. Following Veer Sooryavanshi , head of the Anti-Terrorism Squad tracking down sleeper cells in the 1990s, and outside of brief cameos from other characters in the universe it works mainly as a standalone entry for this particular character.

While its politics aren't exactly the best, that's true of most cop films around the world, and as such, as long as you can ignore that fact, you'll find that Sooryavanshi still has some of the best action and setpiece design in the business . And in the end, that's what most fans are coming here for in terms of action films, and Sooryavanshi does its job wonderfully in that regard.

10 'Dhamaka' (2021)

Directed by ram madhvani.

While more of a thriller than a straight action film, Dhamaka contains a solid amount of action regardless and is a more serious affair compared to some others featured on Netflix. A remake of the acclaimed South Korean film The Terror Live , it follows a news anchor who starts fearing for his life after interviewing a terrorist who had recently blown up a bridge.

While its premise is a hard pill to swallow due to the circumstances, Dhamaka is a suitably tense, well-directed espionage film that also brings out a great lead performance from its main star Kartik Aaryan . Even beyond that though, it's a great commentary on how corrupt officials exploit those for personal gain and how it's connected to the current news landscape.

9 'Don' (2006)

Directed by farhan akhtar.

A high-octane, slick throwback to the action films of the 70s, Don is one of the more famous Indian films for a reason. Following a drug lord who is wounded and the lookalike that is hired to impersonate him, Don is unique among action films of the 2000s in that it's less a "good vs evil" storyline and more of a battle between morally ambiguous individuals in a classic neo-noir setting.

The action scenes are the reason to turn up for Don though, as its chase scenes and cinematography are to die for. There is an energy and momentum to the film that makes it a breeze to watch despite its hefty 169-minute runtime, which ensures that audiences will have a ton of moments to choose from for their big memorable scene.

8 'Malang' (2020)

Directed by mohit suri.

Stylish as hell, Malang follows a killer with a purpose who is on the run from cops and other criminals. The less said now the better, as part of the fun with Malang is its twists and turns that constantly make it difficult to predict where it's going to go next in terms of story. It's one of those movies viewers should go into blind .

Obviously, that's part of the fun for audiences, and once viewers figure out what's really going on, everything becomes clear as day. The drug-infused editing is a highlight here, as it makes each action scene pop in ways viewers wouldn't expect.

7 'An Action Hero' (2022)

Directed by anirudh iyer.

An Action Hero follows the story of Maanav (played by Ayushmann Khurrana ), a 30-year-old man who is at the height of his popularity and acting career, with seemingly everything going his way. His life soon gets completely turned around as he is caught up in an accusation of murder, transforming his life into the eccentric action movies that he usually stars in. Maanav is soon forced to flee his own country, with a vengeful politician hot on his trail looking for revenge.

More than simply having the signature high-octane action and choreography that Indian films are known for, An Action Hero 's greatest highlight is its satirical tone and social commentary . The film has a lot of effective messages about the media landscape and its relationship with insiders and tells these messages in a hilarious black comedy style that works wonders for the film. It makes for the rare Indian action movie that will just as easily have its audience laughing out loud as it will have them mystified by the glorious action on display. – Rob Lee

6 'Major' (2022)

Directed by sashi kiran tikka.

A biopic that also works as a stellar action film in its own right, Major is the true life story of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan who was martyred in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. While this film could have had the potential to become a jingoistic one, it instead opts for a more personal look into the life of Sandeep, keeping its stakes small rather than large.

Because of that, Major packs an unsurprising emotional wallop , no small part thanks to Adivi Sesh 's stellar lead performance. But even beyond that, this is just a well-made film from top to bottom, with some amazing action sequences, great cinematography, and one of the best scores of 2022 .

5 'Baahubali' (2015)

Directed by s. s. rajamouli.

The most expensive film made in India at the time of its release, Baahubali is a historical epic set in medieval India even if it openly (and lovingly) plays loose with history to great effect. Following two cousins who rival over the throne, the large-scale story spans dozens of years and tons of characters - so much so to the point that it was split into two 3-hour films each.

It's certainly a beefy watch for sure, but as a whole, it's hard to find a more enjoyable full package than the entirety of Baahubali . If anything, the film will make audiences wish that Hollywood films were just as unique, entertaining, and varied as it was in regard to their setpieces. The film makes expert use of its massive budget and accomplishes action feats that were simply unheard of in Indian filmmaking at the time, revolutionizing the industry as a whole.

4 'Minnal Murali' (2021)

Directed by basil joseph.

Minnal Murali follows the story of Jaison, an everyday tailor who gains special superpowers after being struck by lightning. He soon adapts the superhero persona of Minnal Murali, and is forced to take down an unexpected villain in order to become the savior and protector that his hometown in Kerala needs.

The 2021 film acts as an Indian answer to the massive boom in superhero action movies during the 2010s . Minnal Murali is able to combine the fantastic power fantasy of a superhero origin story with the blazing action that Indian filmmaking is famous for. The final product is one that is highly refreshing when it comes to both standard superhero movies and the average Indian action film, as it combines the best aspects of both to become its own one-of-a-kind thrill ride. – Rob Lee

3 'Eega' (2012)

Eega follows the story of Nani, a flower decorator who is madly in love with his neighbor Bindhu. Sadly, Nani ends up being the victim of a nefarious plot by a powerful businessman Sudeep, and ends up losing his life at the hands of Sudeep. However, this isn't where Nani's story ends, as he is soon reincarnated as an ordinary housefly, yet still retains his memories as a human, and embarks on a quest of revenge upon Sudeep.

It's hard to believe that a film with the premise of Eega even exists, but not only does this housefly revenge film actually exist, but it fully delivers on the absurdity and insanity of its premise. Eega perfectly portrays its unbelievable premise with enough skill and comedy on display to actually make it work as a genuine action film , complete with numerous iconic action sequences throughout. So rarely are revenge films able to be as hilarious as Eega , but it's all for the better when it means the audience gets to witness a housefly pulling off its glorious revenge upon a human. – Rob Lee

2 'Haider' (2014)

Directed by vishal bhardwaj.

A controversial film at the time of its release due to its portrayals of the Kashmir conflicts of the 1990s, Haider is an adaptation of Hamlet while also working as a political tale. Following a young student searching for his father, it finds him being tangled in a quest for revenge and the politics of the state as he goes further and further into darkness.

A tragic tale that harkens back to the days of Shakespeare, Haider 's excellent and brutal action scenes are only one part of the puzzle. Instead, Haider is also a fantastic look into a dark period of India's history, portraying it with a self-critical lens and hoping that the later generations learn from their past mistakes in history.

1 'RRR' (2022)

Maybe the most popular foreign film in the US this year, RRR needs little introduction, but for audiences who are unfamiliar with Indian cinema, this is a great first viewing. Set in the 1920s, the film follows the fictional friendship of two Indian revolutionaries who fought against British rule.

RRR plays out like a superhero movie with real-life figures, and it's as ridiculously entertaining, sincere, and emotionally charged as you would expect it to be. It's a genuine crowd-pleaser, and S.S. Rajamouli proves himself to be one of our great living action film directors from any country. The film made such a massive impact on release that it even managed to earn an Oscar for Best Original Song, proving that the enthusiasm and future for Indian filmmaking as a whole is bright.

The missiles and launchers departed from Nagpur late Thursday aboard an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft, and the shipment reached Manila, the capital of the Philippines, on the morning of April 19, ABP News has learnt.

Pictures and videos capture the sheer panic and horror as severe turbulence hit a Singapore Airlines flight from London on Tuesday. One passenger was killed and 30 were reportedly injured in the turbulence which forced the flight to make an emergency landing in Bangkok.

“I was covered in coffee... During the few seconds of the plane dropping there was an awful screaming and what sounded like a thud," Andrew Davies was quoted as saying by BBC

According to FlightRadar 24 data, "our initial thinking is the turbulence event is prior to the standard descent from 37,000 to 31,000 feet. That appears to just be a flight level change in preparation for landing."

A passenger on board the flight said the passengers not wearing seatbelts were launched into the ceiling.

The Boeing 777-300ER plane with 211 passengers and 18 crew was headed to Singapore when it made the emergency landing.

"Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased," it added.

Singapore Airlines was using a 16-year-old 777 model for the aircraft that was hit by turbulence on Tuesday, BBC reported.
