John Legend, real name John Roger Stephens, is an American R&B singer-songwriter and pianist from Springfield, Ohio. He began his career playing piano for Lauryn Hill’s 1998 track “Everything is Everything”.

John Legend began working in the music industry right out of college in 1998 and was quickly introduced to up and coming rapper Kanye West. West signed Legend to his record label and hired the singer to sing hooks on his tracks.

In 2004, John Legend released his first studio album, “Get Lifted”, which debuted at number 13 on the US Billboard chart and eventually climbed to the number 4 spot. The album featured production from Kanye West, will.i.am and Dave Tozer. John Legend won three Grammy Awards in 2006 for his work on the album, with the single “Ordinary People” being the most successful track for the singer to date.

Legend teamed up again with Kaye West and will.i.am for his second studio album “Once Again”. The album repeated the success of his first album and secured the number three spot in the US charts. It also won the singer a further two Grammys.

In 2008 John Legend actively participated in Barrack Obama’s campaign for President. The singer contributed to a music video entitled “Yes We Can” which was produced by will.i.am. This activism fuelled John Legend’s desire to get actively involved with philanthropic issues and he has used his music to raise money for multiple causes since this time.

John Legend has won a total of nine Grammy Awards and his three most recent albums, “Evolver”, “Wake Up!” and “Love in the Future”, have all been top ten hits in the US. Legend’s first number one single in the US was platinum certified track “All of Me” from his 2013 album “Love in the Future”. The track is dedicated to his wife, Chrissy Teigen.

Live reviews

John Legend will make the strongest guy in the venue shed a tear with his intimate performances. While he does have an incredible voice you will be floored by his even more incredible piano playing. It is a perfect event you can take your significant other to for a romantic date night. The atmosphere in the venue is beautiful and you can even see people at floor level get up with their partners to dance to the songs. In between songs he even tells the audiences little cute stories. His popular song "All Of Me" was a crowd favorite, and it's amazing when thousands of people sing in unison. John Legend is grace personified and a very classy man. He literally only needs a piano and a microphone to show people a good time. I do recommend for people with future plans to attend a John Legend show to please bring tissues unless you want to end up like me and use my shirtsleeves to wipe tears. Oh and most importantly if you are planning to propose to your significant other be warned there are possibly ten other couples also getting engaged in the venue. So is it really that original? But don't take my advice I would like to get proposed at a John Legend concert, so do it anyway.

John Legend certainly lived up to his name. He made me cry with his rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Waters & the story of his grandmother. It felt like a very personal and warm performance with an old friend, telling you about how he got his break. The fact that he rubbed shoulders with Alicia Keys, another piano impresario sealed the deal for me. In an era where so many performers rely on a massive entourage, 15 strong band plus backing singers, sexual displays or frankly auto tune, John showed them how to deliver a wonderful show with just his perfect instruments & a few friends. His beautiful voice, his musicality along with intimate stage lighting, the wonderful strong quartet (who are stars in their own right) and the best lyrics that take you back to that romance that didn't last, he appealed to every generation. The only thing I felt was out of place was his rendition of Rock with You (courtesy of MJ) but he sang it well and as I am a massive MJ fan, it was more paying homage than a cover version for me. If I could play the piano like John can, I would already have fulfilled my life's dream. Well done I will be back to see you again.

It has been a decade since the last time I watched John Legend, yet, I remember every moment vividly. It all started off when I bought his 'Get Lifted' album by random. He wasn't as 'mainstream' as he is today. Nobody I knew had even heard of him let alone any of his songs. I had my mum play the album in the car non-stop. Weeks went by and I knew word for word the entire album – as if I recited bible verses.

Watching John Legend perform songs like 'Ordinary People', 'Let's Get Lifted' and 'Refuge' made me – and I am sure half of the audience – believe that the world was at peace. His songs are mellow and relaxing; the way people melted and swayed side to side to song after song in unison. That night it was just him and his piano, and that's all you need with vocal chords such as his. He also performed a new song called 'Slow Dance' from an album he was working on (now known as Once Again).

John Legend is a big name now; performing on a global scale with other famous artists like Kanye West, The Roots, Andre 3000 and so on. I've seen him perform elsewhere, but nothing compares to that night, my first ever concert. Legend by name, Legend by nature.

Well..Seeing John live was amazing not only because I like as a singer but also because he has been part of my days especially this last year. It is my first John's concert but I can tell that I will go again when he will be back in Italy. He played most of his last album songs (Love in the future) and also some classics like "Ordinary people" and "Greenlight", "Maxine" etc. The theatre was full...sold out in Padova. He played the piano for most of the concert, He was wonderful. The band also was amazing, really good vibes. I think he is right now the king of soul and part of R&B. His voice is unique. It was I think the classic situation of a good concert in theatre, with right now one of the best singers in scene. The really experience of jazz, blues and soul. I was there!!!

My friend said to me John Legend's style reminded him of Frank Sinatra. Classy, sophisticated and debonair. These are the best words to describe JL. From the time he stepped on stage he had control of the Barclays center... He was very entertaining, interacting with the crowd and giving a lot of background info about himself. I totally forgot that Kanye West was heavily involved in his career and he played piano on so many of my favorite songs from Alicia Keys to Lauren Hill to Slum Village and of course Kanye. My favorite part was when he sang a cover of Michael Jackson''s Rock Wit You....outstanding!!! His music is soothing to the soul. No flashy sets or costume changes...just all JL!!!

The concert of John Legend was just INCREDIBLE! It was my first concert and, I found this really good. John Legend is a person so nice. During his concert he told us to never forget to say «I love you» to who we love, he’s the definition of love. His voice is the same that’s in his video, no difference, the members of the chorus, the musicians, HIM, everything was perfect! He had choose a girl of the public to slow dance with her, it was magical. I have no words to describe this concert. Thank you very much to him, he reminds us to love people who encircles us, his words are honest and completely true. Thank you again and again to John Legend and his crew.

All in all the concert was amazing. He started off with his more popular known songs that were a bit more upbeat, then moved into his slower songs while playing the piano. He had three girls singing and dancing in the background and it was very cool to see a concert with that type of style in it. There were many songs about love so for anyone in a relationship I highly recommend going with your partner for a nighr out. For anyone debating whether or not to go to the concert, if you are in to a bit slower pace than most concerts or even a concert junky like me this is definitely one you dont want to miss.

All of Me Tour 2014 at Pacifico Yohohama, Japan was absolutely Amazing! John Legends vocals were pitch perfect and his musicians are impeccable! My favorite part of the show is the trip down memory lane that he took us on and I simply love his sense of humor!! I was so into each and every moment of the concert that when it was over I was still yearning for more but all good things must come to an end. Can't wait for his next album. John Legend. All I can say is that it was totally perfect. Me and my girl totally had fun and it was totally magical. And the orchestra we're so good! I couldn't believe that I was witnessing all that in person. Especially because we sat in the first row, right in front of him. It felt so intimate. Paying for those front row tickets were so worth it. Hearing his voice live is just so much better than hearing it on my Ipod.

A sublime performance! John Legend oozes charisma when on-stage and belting out his top songs, taken from his recent album 'Darkness and Light'. His entire band and the back-up singers also got their own moments to shine!

Stand-out moments from the show had to include the lucky lady, who from the front row, was picked out to dance on stage with John Legend. Also his song for his new baby daughter was beautiful.

John Legend's "Love In Las Vegas" residency

Fans streaming inside the doors of Planet Hollywood’s Zappos Theater on Friday night (April 22) were greeted by signs stationed outside that read: “Please be advised that we encourage guests to stand up during the performance.” But once the curtains rose on the opening night of John Legend ’s first residency, “Love in Las Vegas,” that extra coaching really wasn’t needed.

For the next two hours, Legend held the full house in his hands as they danced, screamed (“All right, Big John!”) and aah-ed their way through a generous set encompassing the multiple Grammy winner’s seven-album catalog of hits and fan faves. Complementing all of this: colorful sets as well as a few other surprises.

Here are five memorable moments that still resonate the morning after.

Trending on Billboard

Back to the Future

The show opened with a video vignette featuring a young Black male playing piano in a church as an older woman’s voiceover intones, “Never forget where you come from.” Next are scenes featuring Legend portraying himself in various Los Angeles club settings, hanging out with the ladies as Curtis Mayfield ’s “Superfly” plays in the background. At one point, a worn-out Legend falls asleep and dreams he’s a child again back in church… that’s when the theater curtain opens on a church motif with a seven-piece band and three female background singers (draped in sparkling, bell-sleeved robes) flanking a tall platform atop which four similarly draped “angels” are dancing. Below them, a white-suited Legend stands at a white piano (aka pulpit) and softly sings the words “Come on and go with me/ there’s something cool for you to see” before jubilantly launching into the phrase “Holla, holla, holla” — the opening refrain from his hit “Used to Love U” — to audience screams. He also went on to perform “Heaven,” “Get Lifted,” “Penthouse Floor” and “So High.”

With a neighborhood street scene as the backdrop, Legend took the audience to very beginnings of his career in 1998. While a student at the University of Pennsylvania, “dreaming about being onstage,” a friend helped him get his first professional session gig playing on a song, Lauryn Hill ’s “Everything Is Everything.” While it took six years from that point for him to get a record deal, in between he racked up additional credits as an “unknown.” A “guy” he met from Chicago ( Kanye West ) got him the opportunity to sing background on Jay-Z ’s “Encore.” He later sang backing vocals on Slum Village ’s “Selfish.” He also sang the doo-wop ooh’s on Alicia Keys ’ “You Don’t Know My Name” (“Yes, that was me, too”), which he winningly demonstrated while accompanying himself on piano.

Cover Magic

In between performing additional crowd pleasers such as “Tonight (Best You Ever Had),” “Save Room,” “Overload” and “P.D.A. (We Just Don’t Care),” Legend showcased the illuminating depth of his vocalizing and musicianship with a cover of the Simon & Garfunkel classic “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Alone onstage, sitting at a black piano, Legend reflected on growing up in his grandfather’s Springfield, Ohio, Pentecostal church where he begged to at 5 years old to sing in the choir and learned how to play gospel on the piano from his grandmother. “When I sing and play today, you’re hearing my grandmother; I wish she could have seen all this that she inspired,” he said before dedicating “Water” to her. The soaring clarity and love in his vocals, together with the spirituality of his playing, drew a fitting standing ovation.

Ordinarily Speaking

Legend’s rendering of “Bridge” provided the perfect segue into his own classic, “Ordinary People.” Noting that the song was originally supposed to be for the Black Eyed Peas , Legend talked about noodling around with the track and lyrics during and after a studio session with Peas’ member will.i.am before finally pinning down how and what he wanted to say. Hearing him perform this song live — his emotive tenor exquisitely capturing the angst, pain, joy and perseverance of love — is worth the price of admission alone.

Against an art deco backdrop of brightly neon-lit flowers, a heart, and the word love in script emblazoned above the stage, a gold-garbed Legend and crew upped the ante with an energizing dance suite featuring “One Life,” “Bigger Love” and “Green Light” that had the whole theater on its feet. Before closing with “Wild,” there was no way Legend could leave without performing his other signature song “All of Me.” Dedicating the song to his wife Chrissy Teigen (who has a cameo in another video that played earlier in the show), Legend noted — as camera phones popped up across the room — “She’s inspired a lot of songs… this is probably the best one.”

Legend’s “Love in Las Vegas” returns Saturday (April 23), followed by additional dates before month’s end (27, 29 and 30). Three dates in May (4, 6 and 7) round out his first run with a series of more dates slated for August and October.

John Legend on his roots in Philly, political activism, and how his ‘Bigger Love’ tour is giving his music new life

John Legend is coming to Philadelphia for his 'Bigger Love' tour

John Legend will perform at the Met Philadelphia with his Bigger Love tour on Oct. 13.

When the Met Philadelphia reopened as a concert venue in 2018, John Legend was the second headliner to take the century-old opera house’s stage. (Bob Dylan beat him by one day.)

On Wednesday, Legend returns to the North Broad Street venue, 14 months after he was originally scheduled to. His Bigger Love tour — named after his 2020 Grammy winner for best R&B album — was slotted to play Philadelphia in August 2020 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The University of Pennsylvania grad and People magazine’s 2019 Sexiest Man Alive is a consummate musician and activist, and one half of a celebrity couple never far from the public eye.

The 41-year-old singer and pianist completed his EGOT win in 2019 with an Emmy for executive producing Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert . (He also played Jesus in the production.) The Voice , the NBC music competition show that he costars in, is back for its 21st season.

His wife, Chrissy Teigen, with whom he has two children, Luna 5, and Miles, 3, recently shared a photo of the couple marking the anniversary of the loss of a third child , whom they had named Jack, who was stillborn in September 2020.

Teigen was in the news earlier this year after being called out by reality TV star Courtney Stodden for past cyber bullying, for which Teigen issued a lengthy apology .

Legend, who launched an initiative this month called HumanLevel that aims to fight systemic racism and make communities more equitable , spoke on the phone from his home in Los Angeles about music, politics, and hustling to get ahead during his early years in Philadelphia.

This interview has been condensed for length and clarity.

You’re back on tour. Does performing feel different than before the pandemic?

I definitely feel grateful. I don’t know that I took it for granted ever before, but I certainly don’t now. I know everybody has been through a lot over the last 18 months including my family and probably everybody else’s family too. It’s quite a blessing to be able to be out there on stage and have people enjoy the music together. I appreciate it more than ever.

Do the Bigger Love songs have new meaning after the trauma of the pandemic?

What’s interesting about touring is it gives every song new life. There’s something about having a band work on it and try different things. It’s really fun.

Are you trying to keep the family close?

This is the first tour that I’ve really had since my kids are really aware of me being gone.

Last time was in 2018 for the Christmas album. Luna was only 2 years old and Miles was only a few months old. So this one’s harder. They are very aware of that I’m leaving for a few days at a time, and a couple of weeks coming up, and they also can’t come out with me because they’re going to school every day.

On The Voice , you gave Team Legend boxing robes.

Yes. I should run up the Art Museum steps wearing that while I’m in Philly.

Who are your five favorite singers?

Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Nat King Cole, and Stevie Wonder. There’s others that I love, but I think that’s a pretty good top five.

When you came to Philadelphia from Ohio, were you already up to speed on Philly soul?

My dad used to play The O’Jays a lot, and that’s both Ohio and Philly. And then I’d play “Stairway to Heaven” and a lot of those classic O’Jays songs on my dad’s record player.

I definitely got more immersed in it when I was living there. I used to do open mic nights with Kindred the Family Soul and we would do Philly soul tribute nights. ... I think I did “Me and Mrs. Jones.” And then I did the Wake Up! album with the Roots, where we covered Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. That music is so important to the history of soul music. And then I was in Philly at the time when neo-soul was happening.

That was when the Black Lily was happening at the Five Spot in Old City.

Yeah, it was so influential. Philly was the epicenter for that. The Roots, and that whole scene around them. I was a young kid, you know, in my formative years, going to those open mics. I was an audience member and then later a participant, and that was so crucial to my development as an artist. My inspiration to pursue this. All of that wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t in Philly, probably.

Will there be a Wake Up! 2 ?

We talk about it every time I see Ahmir [Thompson, the Roots drummer better known as Questlove]. One of these days we’ll make it happen again.

» READ MORE: John Legend has released an album about love as the world convulses with anger. He still thinks it’s the answer.

After taking a job out of college with the Boston Consulting Group, did you decide to not to pursue a career in business because things broke open for you musically? Or did you realize life would be dull if you gave up on your dreams?

I never really gave up. Even then I was really focused on trying to get my music career off the ground. Consulting hours were not forgiving, so I was burning the candle at both ends, for sure. I would drive down to Philly on weekends and record with Dave Tozer. I would drive down to New York and record with other producers and writers.

I wanted my music career to be what I was focused on. But I also graduated with a bunch of debt and I didn’t have parents that could pay my rent and support me while I was pursuing my dream. I had to get a job that actually paid the bills and made me comfortable enough to be able to do everything else.

I last spoke with you just as Bigger Love was released. George Floyd had just been murdered, people were protesting in the streets. It was an election year, the pandemic was at its peak. Have things gotten better? Are you satisfied with the pace of change?

Every win comes with caveats, and none of the wins are completely clean. I think it was important that Joe Biden won and the policies that he’s passed already and he’s trying to pass ... are going to be really good for the country and make our nation stronger and our economy better and make it work for more people. And so that’s good.

But we’ve also seen how divided people are even on the issue of things like masking and vaccination. People’s political affiliations are causing them to make decisions that are bad for themselves and bad for the public health of their communities. And there’s talk of civil war ... and an election being stolen and all these bills trying to suppress the vote. So it just shows you that even when you win, the wins are pretty fragile, and our democracy is pretty fragile.

Where does HumanLevel come in?

Even though all that’s going on on a national level, we know that a lot of decisions that impact people locally are made in their communities by the mayors and city councils, by people in city government. And so we wanted to make sure we had a voice in the community, a voice for inclusion, a voice for equity in these positions of power. We want to have voices in the room that we’re going to be looking out for everybody in the community.

You’re not in Philly yet, right?

No. We are hoping to expand. We’re in 11 cities right now with 50 fellows. We are there at the request of their mayors. The mayors say we want to focus on this particular issue, whether it’s health equity or housing equity or employment, and can you assign a fellow to focus on this issue, and help us think about these issues and make them better for our community.

At the Biden inauguration, you sang Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good.” Are you still feeling good?

I am an informed optimist. So I know that everything’s not the way it needs to be right now, but I’m hopeful that we can keep making change and keep making the world better. And I’m not just hoping. I’m out there doing it and trying to help make it happen.

John Legend with Kirby at the Met Philadelphia, 858 N. Broad St. at 8 p.m. Wednesday. $44-$204. themetphilly.com . Proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the event is required for entry. Masks are mandatory at all times when not eating or drinking.
