2024 PBA Players Championship: Best Bets, Picks and Predictions

This article is part of our Betting Advice series.

We are less than 24 hours away from the qualifying rounds for the 2024 PBA Players Championship, and the BetRivers Sportsbook app  has a number of different ways that you can get in on the action. Prior to the qualifying rounds you can place wagers on whether or not a bowler will advance to the match play round, who will have a better finishing position among different pairings, and who will win it all or finish in the top two.

For this event, players will battle through two rounds of six game blocks on Wednesday and another two rounds of six game blocks on Thursday. The top 24 after qualifying will advance to round robin match play on Friday and Saturday. Five finalists will compete for the title Monday, live on FOX.

While Kevin McCune looks to defend his title, all eyes will be on players who relied heavily on urethane bowling balls last year, as rule changes will no longer permit the use of bowling balls manufactured below 78.0 hardness. The betting odds haven't necessarily reflected the uncertainty that the rules bring, presenting an opportunity to fade players like Packy Hanrahan and Matt Russo, who found success with the now illegal Purple Hammer.

Another variable that we'll look at for all of our bets today and throughout the season will be the oil pattern being used. The Wayne Webb 38-foot pattern was one of two patterns used last year for the PBA Tour Finals, where the field was limited to just the top eight players in points from 2022 and 2023. The pattern was used exclusively in the 2022 PBA Colorado Springs Open.

PBA Players Championship Matchups Best Bets

Jason Belmonte over E.J. Tackett +120

Belmonte and Tackett are among the top three bowlers in the world, so it will come as no surprise if either one of them walks away with another championship on Monday. In this spot I like Belmonte because I'm getting plus money in a situation where I think it's closer to a 50/50 proposition. Plus, looking at their recent history on this oil pattern justifies going with Belmo here.

Kyle Troup over Tommy Jones -118

While 2022 was a strong year for Jones, he could have finished even better than sixth in tour points with a 221 average if not for the Wayne Webb oil pattern. He finished dead last in the standings of the Colorado Springs Open, averaging just 185.33 on those conditions. Meanwhile, Troup averaged 216.5 in that tournament and then rose to the occasion on the pattern again when he won the PBA Tour Finals in 2023. 

The book has this matchup listed as a coin flip, but even if you took the lane conditions out of the equation, I think that at this point in their careers Troup should be favored over Jones.

PBA Players Championship Best Bets to Qualify (or Not Qualify) for Match Play

Tommy Jones - No +110

Based on the options available, betting on any player to make match play (top 24 in qualifying) comes at a price. Of the 12 players available to select, they all come with a -155 or worse price tag. I will take the bet on Tommy Jones not to make it, based on my earlier analysis of him.

Packy Hanrahan - No +120

This feels a bit riskier, considering Hanrahan has improved from 31st in points in 2021 to 13th in 2022 to sixth in 2023, but at +120 I think it's a good spot to bet against him. Again, he won't have his trusty Purple Hammer, and, like Tommy Jones, he was a no-show on this pattern, finishing 62nd with a 197.58 pattern in Colorado Springs.

PBA Players Championship Winner Best Bets

Jason Belmonte +800 to win

Belmonte, Tackett and Anthony Simonsen dominated the field in 2023, making countless TV shows. If you're betting on bowling, you want to give yourself a chance to at least get your guy to the finals, and then anything can happen. Belmo has scored the best of the three on this oil pattern and is getting better odds than the others.

AJ Chapman +5000 to finish 1st or 2nd

Chapman is my longshot pick. You can take him to win it all at +10000 or play it a bit more conservatively and play for 1st or 2nd place. After not getting drafted in the PBA Elite League, Chapman is as motivated as ever. He averaged over 220 on this oil pattern, and he'll be back in familiar territory in Wichita, as he won the 2015 Intercollegiate Team Championships title and was a first team All-American as a member of the Wichita State University team.

August 19 - 23.

A dozen exempt spots for the 2025 PBA Tour are up for grabs as players bowl 48 games across four oil patterns in four different Chicago-area centers. The top 12 finishers will earn priority entry for all 2025 PBA Tour events and become eligible for the PBA Elite League draft.

Entry for PBA Tour Trials will be prioritized as follows: 1) players who finished 44-100th in 2024 PBA Tour points or players who have won a national title in the last 10 years, 2) players who finished top 10 in points in their respective PBA Regional Tour, 3) top 25 collegiate players (based on average) exiting college for PBA membership, 4) new international players, 5) players who finished top 25 in points in their respective PBA Regional Tour, 6) Any full PBA member (prioritized by date/time of entry).

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, predictions: Favorites and picks from the field

The PGA Tour is back to individual play this weekend, when some of the game's best golfers head to McKinney, Texas, for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson . 

The tournament will be played at TPC Craig Ranch, a 7,414-yard par-71 track featuring Bentgrass greens.

As for betting on the tournament, we've got you covered with everything you need, from the odds to best bets.

Let's dive into the action.

Scottie Scheffler is out again this week as he awaits the birth of his first child. If Scheffler is playing, he is usually the favorite, and understandably so, as he's been dominating the game. On a side note, if you want to get in on some Scottie action this week despite him sitting out, you can now bet on whether he will win all four majors this year.

Rory McIlroy , who's also typically one of the favorites to win each tournament he participates in, is also not competing this week. 

So, who does that leave?

Jordan Spieth currently holds the best odds to win the event at +1400. He finished in second place in the 2022 tournament. 

Si Woo Kim sits at second to win it all at +1600. Jason Day , who won last year's tournament, currently is third on the betting board at +2000.

Now that we teed off with the basics, let's approach the top favorites and my portfolio for this tournament.

LONG-SHOT OUTRIGHT BETS TO MAKE

If you follow me on Twitter or read this column, you know I love betting on golf long shots (+1500 to +2000 or longer). There's just something thrilling about holding a lottery ticket deep into Sunday. It also presents you with multiple hedging opportunities if you want to eliminate some of your risks.

2024 PGA Championship odds, field: Surprising PGA picks from top golf model that won 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the pga championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks for valhalla golf club.

The PGA Tour will head to Kentucky for the second major championship of the season. The 2024 PGA Championship will be played at Valhalla Golf Club for the fourth time in its history. Brooks Koepka enters Valhalla as the defending champion, but he'll have to stave off several serious contenders in the 2024 PGA Championship field if he wants to repeat. The PGA Championship 2024 gets underway on Thursday, May 16. Koepka, a five-time major champion, is 16-1 to repeat according to the latest 2024 PGA Championship odds. Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 ranked player in the world, is the 4-1 favorite, with Jon Rahm (9-1), Rory McIlroy (10-1) and Ludvig Aberg (16-1) next in line on the PGA odds board.

Before locking in any 2024 PGA Championship picks of your own, entering PGA DFS lineups on sites like DraftKings or FanDuel, or finalizing PGA Championship props and PGA Championship Pick Six entries, be sure to see the 2024 PGA Championship golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Top 2024 PGA Championship predictions 

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 PGA Championship: Brooks Koepka, a three-time PGA champion and one of the favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top 10. Koepka has five major tournament wins on his resume and a reputation for elevating his level of play in big events. However, his last two major starts haven't gone well as he was 45th at the Masters, which followed a 64th-place finish at last year's Open Championship. He's failed to shoot par in each of his last seven rounds at major tournaments.

After notching three tournament wins in 2023, including last year's PGA Championship, it has been tough sledding for Koepka in 2024. He has no victories, or even top-fives, and across his six starts, he has three times as many finishes outside the top 25 (three) as he has inside the top 10 (one). He played Valhalla at the 2014 PGA Championship and finished in a tie for 15th place, but that placement ranks just eighth out of his 11 career PGA Championship starts.

Another surprise: Justin Thomas, a 33-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Thomas has won the PGA Championship twice in his career and racked up 15 career victories on the PGA Tour. He's also a Louisville native, so he's very familiar with Valhalla.

In addition, Thomas is ranked sixth in strokes gained: approach to green (0.795) and ninth in birdie average (4.60). If he's draining putts at Valhalla, he'll have a shot at winning another major championship.  See who else to pick here .

2024 Texas Children's Houston Open odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

W ith the Florida Swing wrapped up, the PGA Tour heads to Texas for the 2024 Texas Children's Houston Open . This is the 4th year Memorial Park will host the event, which is headlined by world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler .

Below, we look at the 2024 Texas Children's Houston Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

Having won his last 2 starts, Scheffler will look to make it 3 wins in a row this week in Houston. He's the odds-on favorite to win at +275, by far the shortest odds of any player in the field. Wyndham Clark has the 2nd-best odds at +1200, followed by Will Zalatoris (+1800), Sabith Theegala (+2200) and 2023 champion Tony Finau (+2200).

Memorial Park is a par 70 and plays at 7,435 yards, so it's one of the longer courses on tour. It underwent a major renovation in 2019, which is when the PGA Tour returned to this site, with everything from hole distances changing to bunkers and trees being removed. Scheffler and Finau share the course record of 8-under 62, which Scheffler shot in 2021 and Finau carded in 2022.

Will Zalatoris (+1800)

Zalatoris' missed cut at the Players Championship was surprising, but it shouldn't be enough to deter bettors from taking him again this week in Houston. He typically plays well when the conditions are tough, as evidenced by his major finishes, and while he's never played this event before, it's a good bounce-back opportunity for him at a course that emphasizes ball striking over putting.

Sahith Theegala (+2200)

Theegala finished 61st and 22nd in his 2 starts at this event, but it's reasonable to think he'll improve upon both of those finishes this year. He's in the midst of his best season yet, already posting 4 top-10s and a runner-up in 8 starts with only 1 missed cut. Theegala is just the type of player who can unseat Scheffler at the top.

Keith Mitchell (+4000)

Mitchell had the Valspar Championship in his hands before collapsing in the final round with a 77 on Sunday. That dropped him from 1st to 17th on the last day of the tournament after holding a 2-shot 54-hole lead. That ending to his week will leave a bitter taste in his mouth, but it was more of a fluky performance with the driver than anything. He finished 41st here in 2021 and 9th in 2022.

Texas Children's Houston Open picks – Contenders

Joel dahmen (+6600).

After missing the cut in 3 of his 1st 5 starts of the season, Dahmen has gotten back on track by making it in each of his last 3 starts – including an 11th-place finish at the Players Championship. He followed it up with a T-49 at the Valspar last week and now ranks 27th in strokes gained: off the tee and 8th in approach.

Aaron Rai (+5000)

Rai missed the cut at the Valspar Championship by a few shots but he had notched 3 straight top-35 finishes before that. His putter hasn't cooperated, ranking 136th in strokes gained on the greens but he's 23rd tee-to-green. This is a course he's had success at before, finishing 7th and 19th in his last 2 starts here.

Texas Children's Houston Open picks – Long shots

Alex smalley (+12500).

Smalley has missed the cut in 7 of his 9 starts this season and one of his made cuts resulted in a 75th-place finish. So why bet him now? Because he finished 4th in this tournament in 2022 and 15th the year prior, so he clearly knows this course well.

Tyson Alexander (+25000)

Peter Malnati showed on Sunday that no matter a player's odds, anyone can win at any time. Alexander is a mega-long shot at +30000, but he was the runner-up here in 2022 and already has 1 top-20 finish this season.

The PGA Tour stops in McKinney, Texas, this week for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, a name that doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

This will be the fourth time TPC Craig Ranch has hosted this event and each of the first three turned into birdie-fests. 

The winning scores in the previous three have been -23, -25 and -26, so golfers will need to make a lot of birdies in order to contend this week. 

The course is a par-71 that measures more than 7,400 yards. It features tree-lined fairways and water hazards on 13 of the 18 holes. 

You would think that would translate into a difficult test for the pros, but that hasn’t been the case. It has played as one of the five easiest courses on the tour in each of the last three years. 

Wind and rain are in the forecast, so perhaps it won’t be so forgiving this time. 

Given the length of the course, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have some distance off the tee. There are very few wedges used at this event, as 70% of approach shots in 2023 came from at least 150 yards. 

Golfers who have good proximity numbers with their mid and long irons will have a significant advantage this week getting onto the large bentgrass greens. 

Course history has not been very predictable at this event, so don’t hesitate looking at golfers who have never played at TPC Craig Ranch. 

At the end of the day, this week will be all about making birdies. 

Top odds to win the CJ Cup Byron Nelson

Kim has struggled on the greens this year but has still managed to make the cut in all 11 of the events he has started.

He has gained at least 5.7 tee-to-green strokes in six of his last eight starts, which puts him up there with the best in the field over that timeframe.

He’s a good total driver of the ball, excellent on approach, and he has been terrific around the green this season.

He’s one good putting week away from capturing his fifth PGA Tour title. I could see it coming this week since he finished second at last year’s event. 

Adam Scott to win (+2500, BetMGM )

If you just look at Scott’s finishes, he appears to be having a very consistent year, but his strokes-gained metrics in his game log are all over the place.

He’ll gain off the tee and around the green one week and he’ll gain on approach and on the green the next week.

The way I see it, he just needs all parts of his game to fire on the same week and he’ll find himself back in contention.

I like the number that we are getting in this weak field and the fact that he’s finished T32 and T8 in his two starts at this event. 

Nate Lashley top 40 (+125, bet365 )

My model always seems to love Lashley. For what it’s worth, he’s come through more often than not this year.

If you look at his statistics, he’s above the field average in all four of the strokes-gained metrics.

You might see a lot of missed cuts in his game log, but they have almost all been by one or two strokes.

On a strokes gained basis, he’s actually having a very good year.

He’s finished in the top 25 at this event in each of the last two years, and we are getting +160 on him to finish in the top 40 this week. 

Peter Kuest top 20 (+330, FanDuel )

Kuest burst onto the scene last summer and rattled off a number of top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour. Eventually, he ran out of sponsor’s exemptions and failed to secure his tour card for this season.

However, he has played well on the Korn Ferry Tour and got an invite to play in the Corales event a couple of weeks ago. He finished in the top 10 and earned himself a spot in this field.

He’s a bomber off the tee and can make birdies in bunches. He played here last year and finished T14.
