Vallejo is a city of about 120,000 residents that’s located 45 kilometers northeast of downtown San Francisco .

Though day trips to Fisherman’s Wharf and other San Francisco attractions are popular with visitors to Vallejo, for those who’d rather not fight the Bay Area’s notorious traffic, there are plenty of things to do within city limits as well.

The area is full of cultural, historical, and art-related attractions. It’s also home to some of the Golden State’s most beautiful state and national parks and undeveloped beaches.

Below are 15 things to do in and around Vallejo that warrant a closer look when in the area.

1. San Francisco Bay Ferry

The San Francisco Bay Ferry runs between Vallejo and the city’s ferry terminal on the west side of the bay.

It’s among the most popular tourist activities in the area, and the sights between the two cities are nothing short of breathtaking.

Ferry’s run throughout the day, so if you decide to hop off and explore San Francisco, you won’t need to worry about getting left behind.

The Vallejo side ferry port is located on Mare Island Way. Depending on the weather and headwinds, the trip usually takes about an hour each way. Schedules may vary on holidays, so check beforehand it that’s when you’ll be visiting.

2. Alden Park

Located on the former naval base site on Mare Island in Vallejo, Alden Park is a popular outdoor recreation destination most well-known for its scenic coastal location and the massive ballistic missile on display that harkens back to the tense years during the Cold War.

The Navy officially left the base more than two decades ago. Now, the quiet park doesn’t get much foot traffic, which makes it a good fit for those looking to distance themselves from the crowds.

The park features an impressive collection of military hardware from the past, including artillery pieces and torpedoes from the Civil War, and a German sub from the Second World War.

3. Mare Island Museum

For those visiting Vallejo looking for interesting things to do, there’s really no better place to spend a few days than Mare Island.

It’s the city’s biggest historical attraction, and the museum is just one of many sites worth checking out.

In addition to its indoor exhibits, the museum features expansive grounds that include gardens, historic mansions, a chapel, and seamen’s quarters – all of which are left over from when the island was an active naval base.

The museum is located on Railroad Avenue in Vallejo. You can show yourself around if you’d like, but docent-led tours are regularly available.

4. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom

California sports an impressive number of amusement parks. For those visiting the Bay Area, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is one of the most popular.

With so much to see and do on-site, it’s one of those places that occupies large chunks of vacation time for those traveling with kids.

Full of exhilarating rides for nearly all ages, its amenities include abundant dining options, live entertainment, and plenty of activities geared toward little ones who aren’t quite old enough to ride the big rides.

The park is located on Fairgrounds Drive in Vallejo, about five kilometers northeast of downtown.

5. Sunshine Smoothies and Coffee

Located on Wilson Avenue in Vallejo, Sunshine Smoothies and Coffee is a must-visit attraction for those looking to fill their tanks before spending a long day on their feet taking in the area’s sights.

Sunshine prides itself on high-quality coffee, freshly pressed juices, and vegan smoothies. They also serve baked goods like bagels and muffins.

Previous guests have commented on their bubbly staff, extensive menu, and the efficient manner in which customers got their drinks at the walk-up and drive-thru windows.

Sunshine probably isn’t a good fit for those looking to relax with their drink for a few hours, because most of their business is takeaway.

6. The Alibi Clock

Of Vallejo’s historic attractions, the Alibi Clock probably has the most unique story.

Though it may look like just another city clock to the untrained eye, it was once used as an alibi for a pair of political malcontents wrongly accused of detonating a bomb at a public event in San Francisco in the early years of the 20th century.

Despite having a photograph of the clock to prove they were nowhere near the bomb site at the time of the explosion, the two were convicted of the heinous crime that killed ten.

Both were pardoned more than a decade later, however, and the clock was moved from its original location to its current one on Georgia Street in Vallejo.

7. Empress Theater

Vallejo’s Empress Theater has been one of the city’s most notable landmarks since it was built more than a century ago.

It’s still one of Vallejo’s premier performing arts venues and offers a year-round schedule with productions ranging from dramatic theater and contemporary music to private events, children’s shows, and even boxing matches.

The theater also features impressive architecture, high-tech light and sound systems, and a classy lounge-style bar that often hosts smaller, more intimate events.

It’s located downtown on Virginia Street just a few blocks inland from the Napa River, and consistently receives high marks from guests.

8. Mare Island Naval Cemetery

Beginning in the mid-1850s, naval officers, crewmen, and soldiers were laid to rest at Mare Island Naval Cemetery.

Though it reached maximum capacity in the ‘20s, the cemetery’s residents include more than a few famous characters with interesting pasts, making it a truly unique attraction for those interested in delving into the macabre side of the area’s history.

The cemetery is tucked away in a quiet corner of Mare Island and has been included on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975.

Most visitors spend about an hour looking around before heading off to other Mare Island attractions.

9. Vallejo Farmers’ Market

Whether it’s June or January, cold and windy or hot and sunny, the Vallejo Farmers’ Market is a weekend tradition that takes place at the corner of Main and Georgia streets in the downtown area.

The market features dozens of vendors selling everything from fresh seasonal produce and arts and crafts to baked goods, prepared food items, and locally made health and body products.

Many guests choose to enjoy lunch or breakfast on-site before making their rounds. Despite its city location, previous visitors reported that parking wasn’t a problem.

Most vendors are locals, so don’t be shy about asking for recommendations for things to see and do around town.

10. Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum

The Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum is another of the city’s attractions conveniently located on Mare Island.

The museum includes more than 20,000 square feet of exhibits that preserve and promote the area’s rich naval and shipbuilding history.

The museum is housed in the former City Hall building, which was built in the ‘20s. Its collection includes historic photos, model ships, maritime memorabilia, and first-hand accounts of those who served and worked on the base in years past.

Over the years, the facility has served a number of roles, including police station and government building. There’s a gallery dedicated to works by local artists as well.

11. S.S. Garden City Wreckage

At more than 200 feet long and displacing more than 1,000 tons of water, the S.S. Garden City paddle-wheel steamer was a sight to behold when it was built in the late 1800s.

Due to a fire in the 1980s, the once-proud vessel is now little more than rusting boilers and a slowly deteriorating paddle-wheel, but for lovers of nautical history, it’s definitely an attraction worth checking out.

It now sits quietly along a quiet stretch of water near the city’s ferry terminal, where it once plied its trade carrying passengers and automobiles between Vallejo and San Francisco until it was mothballed in the ’70s.

12. Mare Island Brewing Company

Though Vallejo’s Mare Island is most well-known for its abundant historical attractions, it’s also a great place to relax with a cold beer for those in need of liquid refreshment.

The brewing company and taproom are located on Mare Island Way in Vallejo. They were the brainchild of two California winemakers, who decided to try their hand in the brewing business.

Mare Island’s handcrafted beers run the gamut from crisp ales and dark stouts to hearty porters and hoppy IPAs. Their scenic waterfront location offers visitors amazing views of the San Francisco Bay that make for a truly memorable experience.

13. Mare Island Naval Shipyard

When it was established in the mid-1850s, Mare Island Naval Shipyard was the first facility of its kind on the West Coast.

Over the years, its workforce churned out an astonishing number of naval vessels that would serve the country for decades. According to legend, its dedicated workers once built a destroyer from stem to stern in less than 20 days.

Guided tours are the best way to see the site in its entirety. In addition to getting up close and personal with the dry docks, gantry cranes, and slips, guests will visit other attractions like St. Peter’s Chapel and the mansion that once housed the base’s commander.

14. Napa Valley Wine Train

Napa Valley is California’s premier grape growing and wine-producing region. It’s set amidst some of the state’s most beautiful natural areas, about 25 kilometers north of downtown Vallejo.

The Napa Valley Wine Train runs for nearly 60 kilometers of prime real estate that’s characterized by rolling hills, large tracts of scenic vineyards, and some of the state’s most renowned wineries.

The train is largely comprised of vintage railcars that have been restored to near original condition. They feature a number of seating areas, lounges, and dining rooms that make for truly unforgettable experiences.

1. Arrive on the San Francisco Bay Ferry

There are different ways to get to Vallejo, but the best one is taking the San Francisco Bay Ferry . The hour-long ride is packed with sights that are nothing short of breathtaking. The ferries run a few times a day, so make sure you plan a weekend trip from S.F.

2. Swing by the Alibi Clock 

The Alibi Clock is a Vallejo attraction with an interesting story. In the early 20th century,  two people used a photo of themselves in front of the clock to prove their innocence in a bombing accusation. Even though they got arrested, the two were pardoned a decade later. Point is, make sure to take a photo with the clock; it might come in handy someday. 

3. Attend a Show at the Empress Theatre

Behold the giant sequoias and redwoods

Did you know that the Pacific Coast of the U.S. is the only place in the world where giant sequoias and coastal redwoods grow naturally? Visiting these natural wonders is a must-do when in the Golden State. Contrary to popular belief, redwoods and sequoias are not the same tree; they require two separate climates to survive. To see giant sequoias, head into the Sierra Nevada mountain range, such as to Sequoia National Park , where you'll find the world's largest tree measured by volume: General Sherman.

To marvel at giant redwoods, you have your pick of Redwood National Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park or Humboldt Redwoods State Park (don't miss the Shrine Drive Thru Tree). All these parks sit in northwestern California. These parks offer a variety of camping experiences, such as individual campsites, group sites and trail camps for wilderness backpacking and backcountry camping. Tent camping sites and cabins are available.

If you're the kind of traveler who enjoys a lake vacation , know that Lake Tahoe is California's best. Situated in Northern California, Lake Tahoe is so big that is spills into neighboring Nevada. This alpine lake destination is lauded for its spectacular clear blue waters and beautiful mountainous landscape, and it features some of the best skiing in the country .

If you're visiting during winter, enjoy a ride along the slopes of Heavenly Ski Resort and Northstar California Resort. During the summer, soak up the sun with a dip at Kings Beach State Recreation Area or with a hike through one of the many trails that meander around the lake, such as the 4.4-mile out-and-back Emerald Point Trail at Emerald Bay State Park. Experience wildflower season

Spring and summer are great times to see an abundance of wildflowers – such as the state flower. Depending on where you go, the California poppy has been known to blanket valleys and hills with its vibrant orange tint. How much of a bloom you see and where varies based on the year's seasonal rainfall. Some of the best places to see wildflowers are in Southern California. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, Point Mugu State Park, Figueroa Mountain Recreation Area and Chino Hills State Park are a few of the most popular locations where you can spot pretty flowers.

If your California travels will be concentrated in the north, try North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve or Lake Tahoe, the latter of which is known to feature a spectacular seasonal display of violet and deep blue lupines. Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara enjoys a beautiful location wedged between the coast and the mountains, affording visitors plenty of opportunities for hiking and time at the beach. Santa Barbara's alluring Spanish and Mediterranean architecture also makes this destination feel like a true getaway.

Learn to surf at Huntington Beach

One of the most quintessentially Californian things to do during your trip is learn how to surf . There are several places you can surf up and down the coast, but beginners shouldn't go just anywhere: The best shorelines for novice surfers feature calm waters and knowledgeable lifeguards. Explore one or more of the national forests

Did you know California has the most national forests of any state in the nation? In addition to its famous national parks, California has 18 national forests to its name. If you are vacationing in the southern part of the state, consider a visit to the Cleveland, Angeles, San Bernardino or Los Padres national forests (but check with the U.S. Forest Service before you go to ensure they're not under closure orders caused by fire or storm damage when you visit). These options sit in proximity to vacation hot spots like San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

North of Sacramento, outdoor lovers have their choice of nearly a dozen national forests, including the Mendocino, Six Rivers and Klamath national forests, to name a few. These forest destinations offer beautiful wilderness landscapes, hiking trails and camping options.

Trek along the Lost Coast

Intrepid travelers looking to experience the untouched landscapes of California should consider a trek along one-of-a-kind Lost Coast. Located less than 40 miles south of Eureka in Northern California, the Lost Coast is an undeveloped stretch of coastline. Unlike Big Sur, which shares similar geography, the Lost Coast is devoid of major roads and can be accessed via a 25-mile-long hiking trail. The trail takes about two to four days to traverse (one way), so you should only attempt this hike if you're an experienced backpacker.

Visitors who make the journey will be treated to peace and quiet, empty beaches and plenty of wildlife, ranging from elk to elephant seals, not to mention striking views of the King Range, a collection of mountains that hug the coastline. Camping is allowed on the coast, but you need to obtain a backcountry permit in order to do so.

Point Reyes National Seashore

Point Reyes National Seashore gives visitors a glimpse into a wilderness landscape on the Northern California coastline with no development. Conveniently situated less than 40 miles northwest of San Francisco, this national seashore is easier to reach than Big Sur and the Lost Coast.

Here, you'll be treated to breathtaking stretches of coastline, some of which are only accessible by trail, including the popular 9.7-mile round-trip Tomales Point Trail. A visit to Point Reyes will also take you through verdant, wooded landscapes and put you in close contact with wildlife such as elk, bobcats, seals, beavers and much more. You'll find campgrounds on-site for backcountry hike-in and boat-in camping, as well as modest accommodations in nearby towns, including Olema, Point Reyes Station and Inverness.

Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory sits on the south face of Mount Hollywood and overlooks the Los Angeles basin. Its location gives visitors impressive views of the surrounding area, which many rave about. But there's more than just a pretty photo-op here: The observatory hosts fascinating exhibits and features a top-notch planetarium. Recent travelers cited the breathtaking setting as Griffith Observatory's main draw, though the free entry was certainly a bonus. Use of the public telescopes is also free, but you will have to pay a fee for the planetarium shows.

Hollywood Sign

The iconic Hollywood Sign is located in Griffith Park on Mount Lee. Visitors can hike to this iconic landmark on a few different routes and get sweeping views of LA, but the sign itself is fenced off and is typically guarded. Many visitors say that seeing the sign up close is a must-do.

The sign was originally built in 1923 and read, "Hollywoodland," the name of a real estate development, before the last four letters were removed in 1949. After years of neglect, the dilapidated sign was finally rebuilt in 1978 and has been a universal symbol for the glitz and glamour of the movie industry ever since. In 2023, the sign is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Griffith Park is free and open to the public daily with limited complimentary parking provided throughout the property.

Palm Springs

If you're looking for a place to unwind, Palm Springs is hard to beat. The Sonoran Desert provides a beautiful backdrop, warm weather and plenty of outdoor activities. In the late fall and early spring, temperatures typically range from the 50s at night to the 80s during the day. If you just want to chill, you can spend the day sipping cocktails poolside or get pampered at a luxurious spa. For travelers seeking an active vacation, other draws to the area include golf, tennis and miles of hiking trails.

A traveler-favorite Palm Springs attraction is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which whisks visitors from the desert floor up 2.5 miles to Mount San Jacinto State Park. When the sun sets, head out to one of the city's hip bars or restaurants for a gourmet meal or craft cocktail, such as Bar Cecil or Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. Make it a weekend away with an overnight stay at a Palm Springs hotel like the new wellness-focused Sensei Porcupine Creek or the modern yet rustic Sparrows Lodge .

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Located on the central California coast, the Monterey Bay Aquarium draws nearly 2 million visitors per year. This institution houses more than 200 world-class exhibits that highlight the marine habitats of the area, as well as plants and creatures of the deep ocean. Guests can watch sea otters frolicking, witness glowing jellyfish and admire a 28-foot-tall kelp forest.

The aquarium also prides itself on working to protect the Pacific Ocean off California's coast. Its initiatives include reducing plastic pollution in the ocean, promoting sustainable seafood choices and helping rebuild sea otter populations. Past visitors recommend taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium.

May 2 vallejo/vacaville arts and entertainment source: vallejo muralist melissa penny brings color to transit center.

A much-needed pop of color has been slowly transforming the four walls of the Sereno bus station in Vallejo. For the past month, passersby, pedestrians and passengers have become familiar with the paint-splattered sight of Vallejo muralist Melissa Penny busy at work.

As she puts on the final touches, Penny shared the moment with “The goddesses”: Mz. Askari of Sowonde Productions, Karen Finlay of Alibi Bookshop, Lisa Gutierrez-Wilson and Angela Jackson, the SolTrans project manager of the mural.

This SolTrans project isn’t the first time Penny has been selected to work with the transportation provider, but it certainly competes for the biggest. Penny, also known artistically as MalisBEE, has been previously commissioned to paint utility boxes all over the city, as well as a mosaic tile installation titled “Embark.”

Now, with a project spanning four walls, Penny took the opportunity to call on this powerful group of important women in the Vallejo community, and some brand new to the medium.

“I like that having a bigger job like this gives me an opportunity to share the love with other artists that I know in the community,” said Penny, joined by her tattoo artist and friend from Washington.

But the colorful fusion of whimsy and realism is more than a celebration of local artists. It honors the bus riders who visit the station regularly. And who will see their own likeness brilliantly incorporated in the painting.

“We were a little community who came in here and then we started meeting the people around this area,” said Penny. “They’re asking us how we’re doing and telling us about their day.” As she got to know more people, Penny began asking if they wanted to be on the mural. The response was always an emphatic “yes!”.

“This is Amy — she comes through all the time,” said Penny, pointing to one portrait with a photo posted nearby for reference. Two of the four walls feature a bus, one with passengers smiling through the bus windows and the other with riders standing out front.

Of course, with the busy transit station as her studio, Penny receives a lot of opinions on her progress. “Some people come by and say, ‘His neck’s not that fat’,” laughs Penny, adding that the portraits take the longest to get right.

This revitalization of the Sereno Transit Center has been in the works ever since SolTrans received the California Clean Air Grant in November. The building had been getting vandalized by someone Jackson calls “The Lipstick Bandit” whose artistic medium of choice was the cosmetic item.

When it came time to invest in the space, Jackson approached the project as an opportunity to revisit and give back to the community she came from.

“When I was in elementary and middle school I used to take the Vallejo transit to Mare Island to visit the sports center,” said Jackson. “I’ve always been a part of the bus system.”

For Penny, the transit center has proven an inspirational space for the way the wind blows through and around the building. She captured that natural phenomenon and added a signature of hers: butterflies. Not only is Vallejo in the migratory path of butterflies, but the whimsical creatures also unite the four walls with their own flight pattern across the mural.

These nine butterflies spread out across the four walls presented the ideal opportunity for Penny’s “goddesses” to add their own artistic flair.

“Why should I have all the butterflies?” Penny asked herself. “It should be women in the community who don’t necessarily do art who would enjoy the process of putting it on the wall.”

Finlay, who planned to paint her butterfly in the style of a book, felt honored to be participating. “We have Melissa’s murals around the corner from our house so I get to see them every day,” said Finlay. “This is an exciting opportunity to paint again,” said Finlay, who remembered the joy of painting as a kid.

Dolly Parton’s “Love Like a Butterfly” began to play, giving the “goddesses” their cue to take up their paint brushes and breathe life into the mural.

As Penny anticipates wrapping up the project in the next week, she plans to do a celebration. “I’d like to do a little party,” said Penny. “Because of the people who are in it who come here all the time and give us good vibes.”

The guest list would include the friends Penny has come to know this past month, like Jerry who stops by everyday to talk politics. And Dave who grew up in Vallejo during the ’60s and said the colors of the mural remind him of Vallejo of yesteryear.

Whether they become the artist or the subject, incorporating the community into her art is second nature to Penny.  “When you put it out there it comes back to you, like the wind,” said Penny.
