How a $30,000 investment turned into a travel business that turns over up to $70 million a year

How a $30,000 investment turned into a travel business that turns over up to $70 million a year

Randall Deer, managing director of Ignite Travel Group, turned his expert knowledge of the luxury travel sector into a growing business expected to turn over between $60 million to $70 million this year.

Launched as a marketing business eight years ago, the Gold Coast-based group now encompasses RewardsCorp and travel package site My Holiday Centre.

Before launching Ignite Travel Group, Deer was the chief financial officer of BreakFree hotels and apartments, before it was sold to Mantra Group. He was also the managing director of a privately held luxury resort group.

While his company has soared, Deer explains that a family tragedy reminded him of the importance of putting family first and striving for life balance, regardless of the demands of being a business owner.

We started a marketing and promotions business, we called that business RewardsCorp. It was purely B2B, we would create a travel-based promotion, or sales promotion. If Optus want to sell more phones we might give people a $500 travel account if they take out a two-year $49 a month plan, for example.

It was flying along really well. It probably went from $400,000 turnover in the first year to $4 million to $7 million to $10 million… then the global financial crisis hit… I started to hear something I wasn’t familiar with, which was ‘I love the concept, but no’.

So we said let’s go straight to the customer and we bought a retail travel business for $30,000 in Coolangatta at the end of 2009. We started what is the fastest growing travel business in the country now for three years in a row, and it is only four-and-a-half years old.

There was no point competing in traditional travel. We thought, let’s do this in a way that no one else is, and let’s present those holidays in a way that they are fantastic holidays not ‘loss leaders’.

Loss leaders are when in an advertisement there will be 100 offers , all of which will be the cheapest flight on the cheapest day, at the cheapest room and the cheapest hotel. They do that to make the phones ring, then they upsell you into something else.

People aren’t doing three nights in Hawaii as a whole holiday, so we say let’s not trick people, let’s do a whole holiday solution in a bundle for a duration that makes sense. People are time poor… so let’s present one offer, with the best flight options, best accommodation, best for value for money, best duration, best to and from airport packages.

We have 120 staff now. We have been growing a lot, around 50% to 100% each year. We grow a lot and then we break things and then we have to go back and fix them again. There are seven systems that power our business and we have just spent six months updating five of them, and that takes a heavy toll on your growth aspirations.

We just launched My USA, which is a new destination, and we launched My Hawaii recently. It is one of our top-three selling destinations. Our best performers are Hawaii, Fiji and Queensland.

I call them tropical ‘drop and flop’. In the USA it is hard for us to do pre-prescribed packages – with choice comes complexity and in the US I can’t guess what customers want to do – but I can in Fiji roughly and I can in Bali.

We launched My USA because of the size of the market. Over one million Australians hit LAX last year. I want a ‘choose your own adventure’ package offer for the US.

A challenge has been high-level resourcing: Having the sort of staff that share the vision and share the ability to work in such a dynamic environment. I have fantastic staff.

My work/life balance has gone through ebbs and flows. I was a very dedicated, business oriented person, I’d go flat out. In the past 12 months I hired a lot of executives who were better than me at individual parts that I was doing…to step back.

I have two boys – one is nine and one is five and in the middle of those two I had a son and he actually passed away from illness. It was tragic – it taught me perspective. I used to work on weekends and at night and I just don’t now, full stop.

On our balance sheet we have cash and profits and that is it. I want to move into the ownership of tourism assets. We are pretty close.

We don’t have any debts in the company so it will take on a different demeanour with assets.

Randall Deer – Managing Director of Ignite Travel Group – is a multiple award-winning entrepreneur who has yielded exceptional success and growth for his innovative travel and tourism marketing company as he continues to challenge traditional travel practices.

After completing a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance & Accounting) at the University of Adelaide at the age of 23, Randall assumed the position of Body Corporate Manager with Ernest Body Corp Management where he managed over 2000 strata titled dwellings.

From there, Randall became General Manager of Australia’s largest privately owned management rights entity Strand Resorts, while at the same time representing the Australian Management Rights Industry to the Australian Taxation Office to secure the correct taxation treatment for serviced and strata titled apartments when the new GST system came into effect.

This successful lobbying subsequently saved consumers and strata title unit stakeholders millions of dollars.

At 27, Randall progressed to the coveted position of Chief Financial Officer of Breakfree Resorts where, among other accomplishments, successfully led a bid to raise $60million in IPO (debit and equity) to purchase 23 initial resorts which became the core of Stella Hospitality Group, now known as Mantra Group (a subsidiary of MFS and a $2 billion ASX entity).  Randall’s key responsibilities included IPO management and financial compliance.

In 2005, Randall established what is today Ignite Travel Group (formerly RewardsCorp Group), and in eight years since its inception, has grown the lucrative company into a $85million business. Ignite Travel Group is a multi-channelled travel-marketing corporation that comprises two business divisions: RewardsCorp and The Holiday Centre (now renamed Ignite Holidays), who is also the parent company of the awarded My Holiday Centre and Group Buying Escapes.

Testament to the company’s upwardly mobile philosophy, which is inspired by innovation, The Holiday Centre, was named as BRW’s Fastest Growing Travel Business in 2011, 2012 and 2013 plus ranked highly amongst the Top 100 across all industries nationally for these years.

In 2011, Randall recognised the rapidly evolving online buying phenomenon driven by social networking sites and launched a new concept brand, Group Buying Escapes now re-branded to Holiday Exclusives.

Ignite Travel Group employs over 100 staff and continues to progress into a global player in the travel-marketing sphere. Its head office is located on the Gold Coast, Queensland; a satellite office in Sydney and logistics support office operated in the Philippines.

Randall’s vision is to continue to leverage the business’ core competencies into incremental vertical channels and expand its national and international presence; transforming both existing and original travel and tourism ideas into working models with vast consumer appeal.

Randall Deer, founder of Ignite Travel Group, shares his best travel tips and predictions

The best way to beat jet lag revealed.

The better boarding method airlines won’t use

Randall Deer, the founder and managing director of Ignite Travel Group, turned his expert knowledge of the luxury travel sector into a thriving business specialising in exclusive discount travel and luxury packaged holidays. We chat to him about his best travel tips and the future of travel.

WHAT ARE YOUR TRICKS FOR BEATING JET LAG?

Try and assume the arrival destination’s clock from the minute you board the plane. For example, if you leave at midday but local destination time is 10pm, try and sleep on the flight as early as you can. The second piece of advice (which I should follow) is to limit alcohol consumption, in flight anyway.

HAVE YOU NAILED THE ART OF PACKING?

While I may have nailed it with the amount of practice I have had, this still doesn’t make it enjoyable. In terms of tips for packing, I always have a dedicated travelling set of toiletries ready to go. It’s not only convenient, but I never forget anything plus this saves a lot of time packing. Secondly, I group clothes into categories and use garment folders to minimise the need to iron at the destination.

FLIGHT ATTENDANTS’ SECRET TO BEATING JET LAG

INSIDE A QANTAS FLIGHT ATTENDANT’S BAG

THE BIG MISTAKE YOU’RE MAKING WITH CARRY-ON

Randall Deer knows a thing or two about travel.

WHAT DO YOU NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT?

My travel must-haves are of course my mobile phone and credit card. Plus, with the vigorous airline baggage rules, restrictions and charges, I carry a compact set of electronic scales which are available at any suitcase or travel store.

WHAT ARE YOUR BEST TIPS FOR FLYING?

I travel with a portable entertainment device loaded with my favourite TV shows and movies. I also take a spare T-shirt on the plane, particularly on business trips. For longer haul flights, my travel team and I agree, to take your own earphones and eye mask if you plan to sleep.

WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU VISIT A NEW PLACE?

After check-in, I get to know the Hotel Concierge and their recommendations. They have all the best “travel like a local” information.

TIPS FOR BOOKING/PLANNING A HOLIDAY?

I suggest planning your holidays as far in advance as you can. The dynamic pricing models employed by airlines, hotels, cruise lines and other tourism operators tend to result in higher pricing closer to the date of travel.

I also suggest reading review sites. Resorts are not going publish discrepancies from customers about their product on their site.

Fellow traveller reviews should be a mandatory go-to; if you don’t already have a trusted travel agent that you can rely on. Don’t believe the marketing hype of the brand, use reviews.

Randall hopes to make the Maldives more accessible to all. Picture: Alamy

FAVOURITE OVERSEAS DESTINATION?

It’s why always the next one I am travelling to. Each destination has something unique and amazing to offer. A favourite destination really depends on what you are looking for, which is why it is hard to pick a favourite. For a relaxing family holiday in a tropical environment we think Fiji is hard to beat. We take three to four family holidays a year, so each one holds its own reward to us.

FAVOURITE AUSTRALIAN DESTINATION?

In Australia with our family’s approach to holidays, it’s hard to beat the Whitsundays in the cooler months and coastal camping along the Northern New South Wales coast during the warmer months. Living here on the Gold Coast, known as one of Australia’s holiday meccas, holidaying here for us can be as equally rewarding.

WHAT’S THE NEXT BIG THING/UNDER THE RADAR DESTINATION?

Exploring the stunning location of the Maldives is an unforgettable location for me. The Maldives is traditionally not the easiest of destinations to get to so we are providing a complete solution and holiday package to enable customers to tick this off their bucket list.

As told to Rowena Ryan

Removing the ability to recline your seat is the latest step in "airlines degrading their economy class products," according to aviation experts.

Jetting over to Europe just got easier, as Singapore Airlines launches direct flights to Brussels, for the first time in more than 20 years.

There is a scientifically better way to board a plane, and save time. But there's an annoying reason airlines won't adopt this method.

Gold Coast company Ignite Travel Group leading renaissance for traditional travel agents

A GOLD Coast company is leading a 21st century renaissance for the humble travel agent.

Randall Deer, managing director of Ignite Travel, is a leading Gold Coast tourism operator. Picture: Adam Head

QLD Business

Don't miss out on the headlines from QLD Business. Followed categories will be added to My News.

While the rise of internet booking sites sparked predictions of the demise of traditional travel agents, the Gold Coast-based Ignite Travel Group is moving in the other direction, expanding in to a business empire employing more than 150 staff.

Ignite’s tourism operations include the My Holiday Centre range of destinations such as Fiji, Bali and Hawaii as well as the high-end GET LUXE.

Last year the company’s brands delivered holidays for more than 200,000 Australians in a sign the demise of the travel agent was greatly exaggerated.

Ignite Managing Director Randall Deer said people were becoming increasingly time-poor, increasing the scope for offering ready-made holidays traditionally the domain of the old-school travel agent.

“Everyone can go on the net and search for hotels or flights, but does everyone want to?” he said.

“There is definitely still a role for travel agents for people who are time poor or don’t want to leave anything to chance.

“So we said: ‘Let’s take the old model and evolve it to meet today’s era’.”

Mr Deer in his Gold Coast office. Picture: Adam Head

He said tweaking the traditional travel agent model gave Ignite an edge and the hundreds of thousands of customers were proof the demand was there.

“We had to find a gap in the market and we didn’t want to compete with anyone,” he said.

“So we started selling ‘holidays in a box’ where everything is included, when no one else in travel was doing that.

“Some people were offering flights and hotel packages, but there was nothing out there doing it like we do.”

Originally from Adelaide, Mr Deer has lived on the Gold Coast for almost 20 years and was the Chief Financial Officer of the Mantra Group when the business morphed in to a public company.

He then walked away to start Ignite, originally operating in the niche market of travel-based incentive and rewards programs.

The GFC forced a rethink, leading to Ignite’s package deal focus today.

“I think this is the biggest travel sector in the country,” he said.

“Holidays are so important to people these days and it’s one of the things they look forward to in life the most and we want to make it easier for people.”

Russia establishes special site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600

!{Model.Description}

A special production site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600 fast reactor under construction has been established at Russia’s Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - Machine-Building Plant) in Elektrostal (Moscow region), part of Rosatom’s TVEL Fuel Company.

As part of the project, MSZ had upgraded existing facilities fo the production of fuel for fast reactors, TVEL said on 3 March. Unique equipment has been created and installed, and dummy CFR-600 fuel assemblies have already been manufactured for testing.

The new production site was set up to service an export contract between TVEL and the Chinese company CNLY (part of China National Nuclear Corporation - CNNC) for the supply of uranium fuel for CFR-600 reactors. Construction of the first CFR-600 unit started in Xiapu County, in China's Fujian province in late 2017 followed by the second unit in December 2020. The contract is for the start-up fuel load, as well as refuelling for the first seven years. The start of deliveries is scheduled for 2023.

“The Russian nuclear industry has a unique 40 years of experience in operating fast reactors, as well as in the production of fuel for such facilities,” said TVEL President Natalya Nikipelova. “The Fuel Division of Rosatom is fulfilling its obligations within the framework of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the development of fast reactor technologies. These are unique projects when foreign design fuel is produced in Russia. Since 2010, the first Chinese fast neutron reactor CEFR has been operating on fuel manufactured at the Machine-Building Plant, and for the supply of CFR-600 fuel, a team of specialists from MSZ and TVEL has successfully completed a complex high-tech project to modernise production,” she explained.

A special feature of the new section is its versatility: this equipment will be used to produce fuel intended for both the Chinese CFR-600 and CEFR reactors and the Russian BN-600 reactor of the Beloyarsk NPP. In the near future, the production of standard products for the BN-600 will begin.

The contract for the supply of fuel for the CFR-600 was signed in December 2018 as part of a governmental agreement between Russia and China on cooperation in the construction and operation of a demonstration fast neutron reactor in China. This is part of a wider comprehensive programme of cooperation in the nuclear energy sector over the coming decades. This includes serial construction of the latest Russian NPP power units with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors at two sites in China (Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs). A package of intergovernmental documents and framework contracts for these projects was signed in 2018 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Delaine Eastin, pioneering California politician, dies at 76

Delaine Eastin, a trailblazer who is among a handful of women ever elected to statewide office in California, has died after suffering a stroke, according to her representatives. She was 76.

“Delaine will be remembered for her boundless intellect, infinitely compassionate spirit, sharp sense of humor, and courageous leadership in local, state, national and international realms,” said a statement released by those close to Eastin after her death on April 23. “Her love of education, children, animals, gardens, and the arts shined through everything that she did.”

The first and only woman elected state superintendent of public schools, Eastin and her then-husband were unable to have children. After she won the post in 1994, Eastin recalled that he told her, “Now you have 6.1 million children.”

This ethos was rooted in Eastin’s core beliefs. She grew up in a blue-collar family that stressed the importance of education. Her father, a machinist originally from Appalachia, gave her $1 for every poem she memorized, put a second mortgage on the family home to pay her college costs and wept at her graduation.

“Education changed my life forever,” Eastin told The Times in 2018 during her bid for California governor. “I want that for every kid.”

Delaine Eastin is fighting for momentum in the governor’s race — and she’s going to all 58 counties in California to do it

Delaine Eastin was a sophomore in high school when a drama teacher urged her to try out for a part in “The Man Who Came to Dinner.”

April 10, 2018

Born in 1947 in San Diego, Eastin grew up primarily in San Carlos. Though neither her father nor mother, a store clerk from San Francisco, attended college, both prioritized the importance of school.

“My dad said education gives you choices,” Eastin recalled in 2018. “He felt like he didn’t always have choices.”

Educators were pivotal to shaping her future, she added, notably a Carlmont High School drama teacher who urged her to try out for a part in “The Man Who Came to Dinner.” When she balked, he told her, “This is a metaphor for your whole life. If you never try out, you will never get the part.”

After winning the role, Eastin said that advice stuck with her.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from UC Davis in 1969 and a master’s from UC Santa Barbara in 1971, both in political science, and then taught at community colleges and worked in the private sector before running for office. Eastin was elected to the Union City City Council in 1980 and then represented parts of Alameda and Santa Clara counties in the state Legislature from 1986 to 1992.

She was one of only a few female state lawmakers at the time.

“Women were especially close to each other in those days,” Eastin told the Orange County Register in 2023. “Women did look after one another because we sort of had to, because we would be dismissed or spoken down to in some instances unless we stood up for each other.”

“I remember in the early days, there were people who wouldn’t let me on the members’ elevator because I was a girl, and I couldn’t possibly be a member,” Eastin recalled, noting that at one point, an Assembly leader referred to the legislative women’s caucus as the “Lipstick Caucus.” He ultimately apologized.

Eastin’s then-colleagues remembered her as a mentor.

“Boy was I lucky! In 1990, I was a brand-new assemblywoman and Delaine took me under her wing,” said former state Sen. DeDe Alpert, who served in the state Assembly with Eastin. “Her knowledge and leadership skills helped me with policy issues and politics. At a time when there weren’t many women in the Legislature, she was a wonderful leader who made it her job to bring along the newer women members. She was so generous with her time and talent.”

Eastin was then elected superintendent of public instruction , serving from 1995 through 2003.

“Her dedication and foresight to nurturing and preparing students for the future laid the foundation for what has been possible for our students today,” Tony Thurmond, the current superintendent of public instruction, wrote on social media, noting Eastin’s focus on universal preschool, nutrition and celebrating educators.

Eastin Urges Involvement in Education

Visit: State schools chief tours local campuses and delivers well-received speech calling on community leaders to do more to help students.

Sept. 26, 1996

Eastin unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2018. While she lacked the necessary fundraising ability and statewide name recognition to win the seat, Eastin won the admiration of her Democratic rivals and party activists.

They lauded her history, beliefs and wit, such as when she was asked about student testing during a gubernatorial debate and replied, “You don’t fatten a hog by weighing it more often.”

Eastin is survived by two women whom she considered her “chosen daughters,” Daisy Gonzales, a former foster child who is the deputy chancellor of the state’s community college system, and Maha Ibrahim, a lawyer with Equal Rights Advocates.

“Delaine taught us that leadership is about values and empowering the next generation to find their voice. Education was the tool to ignite change,” Gonzales said.

“Delaine also taught me that family could look many different ways,” she added. “She had complete trust and love for future generations, and was unafraid of what is different or new. She was a trailblazer, a hero, and a mentor to many. To Maha and me, she was also family.”

Eastin is also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life is expected to be held this summer in Davis.
