Three-story Latin bar and restaurant opens on South Elm Street in Greensboro

A new bar and restaurant is bringing a modern take on Latin food and atmosphere to the heart of downtown Greensboro.

Pura Vida opened at 221 S. Elm St. in April, surrounded by some of Greensboro’s most popular restaurants, with an appeal to Hispanic and non-Hispanics alike.

Owner Bryan Ramos, who also owns El Patio Bar & Grill in Raleigh, said he has opened the “next generation” of Latin restaurant that offers a full array of cocktails and a Latin fusion menu that goes beyond the usual tacos, enchiladas and burritos.

Ramos said that this kind of bar and restaurant is starting to take off in other cities. “I saw potential in Greensboro, because I didn’t find anything around here like the concept I wanted. I want to create the next generation of Latin restaurant,” he said.

Pura Vida is a large space with high ceilings, a open second-floor terrace, and a third floor. Ramos has had the space completely renovated.

The restaurant décor is sleek with contemporary furniture and a mix of tables and booths. The atmosphere is dark, with Latin music pumping. Graffiti artist Jalel Ronin of Raleigh, who is originally from Guatemala, covered the walls with colorful murals.

The menu offers a handful of entrees but also features a lot of appetizers or shareable plates – a kind of modern take on bar food with a Latin twist.

“We focus a lot on presentation. It’s not fine dining, but we take a little more time to make nice-looking plates,” Ramos said.

Ramos, a native of Costa Rica, said that his head chef is from the Dominican Republic and other cooks in the kitchen include those from Mexico and Colombia.

The empanada appetizer includes an order of three for $16, with a choice of beef, chicken or shrimp fillings. Chicken wings ($14.85) come with a mango chile sauce. Other apps include a ceviche trio (including shrimp, octopu and tilapia), croquetas and tuna tataki.

There are three types of tacos but none of them are standard Mexican or Tex-Mex tacos. The tacos de gallo de Salchichon ($15.23 for three) are Costa Rican-style with smoked sausage, cabbage, guacamole and more. Other tacos include grilled octopus, and a surf-and-turf mix with chimichurri.

The menu includes sushi, including a selection of popular Japenese rolls, such as spicy tuna, California and rainbow, plus a few Latin-style rolls. The mar y tierra roll ($17.19) includes shrimp tempura and churrasco steak, cream cheese, avocado and ripe plaintains with a sweet sauce. Another roll combines chicken tempura and chicharron.

Entrees include a grilled chicken, salmon, octopus, pork ribs and Mexican-style steak, as well as a creamy pasta dish. A Colombian-style bandeja paisa ($28.22) is big enough to share, with smoked sausage, skirt steak, chicharron, beans, rice, arepa, plaintains and a fried egg.

The full bar includes not only the usual margaritas, mojitos and pina coladas, but also a few specialty drinks. Those include the Bubble Blue ($12) with rum, orange liqueur and blue curacao; Blackberry Bloom ($14) with vodka, lime and blackberry; and Pal Patio ($16) with Brugal Anejo rum, cranberry, orange liqueur and lemon.

The restaurant has a second and third level. The main level seats about 110 and the second level seats about 60, overlooking the main floor. The third level, which also can seat about 60 but is not yet open, will be a “completely different concept,” Ramos said, with a separate bar, higher-end cocktails and a quieter atmosphere. “The music will be in the background. It will be a place you can sit and talk,” he said.

Ramos said that part of his idea in creating the excitement of a club within a more relaxing sit-down restaurant. “Personally, I don’t like to go to clubs. It’s too crowded and everything,” he said.

He said that Pura Vida doesn’t have a dance floor, but don’t be surprised if you see people spontaneously dancing.
