Delhi to London (by road) in 70 days

Adventures Overlandare will soon open bookings for a Delhi to London bus tour, May 2021.

Between the mid-1950s and late 1970s, Hippie Trail was a hit. Groups of people used to pack their bags and travel from Europe to Asia in buses. Now, Gurugram-based travel company Adventures Overland that offers road trips and cross border drives across six continents, is working to replicate that idea with their ‘Bus to London’. This first-ever hop-on/hop-off bus service between India and London will cut through 18 countries, covering 20,000 km in 70 days.

“We tried and tested this route in 2017, 18 and 19, with a 50-day journey from Delhi to London in customers’ self-driven cars. At that time, we got requests from people wanting to travel in leisure. So, we thought of a bus,” says Co-Founder, Sanjay Madan.

Sanjay Madan and Tushar Agarwal

A 45-seater bus will be converted into a 20-seater bus with business class seats. The number of buses and journeys will depend on the number of bookings. The ceremonial flagging off will be done from India Gate in Delhi in May 2021, but the actual journey will commence from Imphal as the road route will proceed from Myanmar.

“We will take charge of documentation, paperwork, visas, and permits to ensure that the participants get to completely focus on experiencing the journey. An experienced English speaking local guide will travel with the group to ensure smooth communication,” adds Co-Founder Tushar Agarwal, 39.

Madan and Agarwal met in 2011 when the two had registered their names in the Limca Book of Records. While Madan had become the first Indian to drive to the world’s highest motorable road at Khardung La (5,602 m) in a Tata Nano (626 cc), Agarwal was the first Indian to drive from London to India.

“Since both of us were on the same page, we got together and formed this company in 2012. In 2013, we did several trips, and we went on to make 14 Limca Book Records together,” says Madan. Till date, the duo has taken passionate road trippers to more than 70 countries around the world. And with the Bus to London, they hope add another record.Out of 70 days, 45 days are chalked out for travel and the rest for sightseeing and stay.

Madan, 44, says, “For instance, we will go to France by bus and from there, then cover a distance of 100km out of the total distance of 20,000km in a ferry. The total cost of the one-way trip amounts to `15 lakh per person.”

The duo has not started taking bookings yet. “We are waiting for the new travel guidelines post COVID. The plan is to have one bus but we can make it two buses also, one after the other,” informs Agarwal and Madan adds, “When we start taking bookings, submitting a COVID-19 negative report will be made compulsory.”

Like every other travel firm, the pandemic has impacted their business. “Our last trip was the Winter Drive to Russia in February. After that till now there has been no trip. But, we wanted to do this bus trip, and the lockdown gave us the time to plan it. We are also planning domestic trips to Rajasthan in December. Let’s see how things change by then,” adds a hopeful Agarwal.

On its return journey from London, the bus will be renamed ‘Bus to India’, and participants have the option to join for the entire duration or one or more legs.

  • Special Overland Permits , that should be approved by both the state and the government, are needed in order to cross through Myanmar and China. While the former process may take about a month, the latter will take over 3 months; so make sure you apply accordingly.
  • When driving to Myanmar, one also needs to have a government-approved Escort vehicle as well as a local Burmese guide and a liaison officer assigned by the Ministry of Myanmar Tourism with them during their entire time in the country. A tourist guide approved by the Chinese government is also mandatory during your entire journey in China.
  • The Central Asian countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan require some assistance when crossing the borders and special invitation letters are also mandatory for these countries. Thus, you need to ensure that you apply for these documents in advance. There is also a possibility that you may come across some corrupted custom police officers so you need to research and be prepared to handle them just in case.
  • You must also take some additional documents such as your vehicle’s Original Registration Certificate, Motor Insurance, Pollution Certificate, Global Travel Insurance so that you have some cover in case you come across some perilous situations such as kidnapping, accidents, adverse weather conditions, etc.
  • Given the fact that this trip will most likely take you over a month at the very least, you will have to carry some extra cash with you. Now, it is common knowledge that US dollars are universally accepted currency so make sure you carry some small USD notes so that you can use them on the way.
  • Also, if you are on some medication , do not forget to carry it with you; in fact, take enough that it lasts you for the whole month or at least a couple of weeks so that you don’t fall short on them when you are crossing by remote terrains.

A Few Pointers for Your Motor Vehicle

  • If your vehicle has a good ground clearance and is well-serviced (such that it does not break down in the middle of anywhere), then you should not have a problem. The only catch is that the vehicle should be registered under one of the people undertaking this journey. It is also said that people who use rented cars may have some problems during the entirety of the trip.
  • Since you will be crossing through the remote areas of Central Asia, China, and Russia where you will probably face some difficulty in getting your car tank filled with petrol, it will be a good idea to carry at the minimum 20-litre jerry can of spare fuel.
  • Another important aspect that you need to pay attention to is spare parts so that even if your vehicle does face some problem in the middle of nowhere, you are able to change that part and carry on with your journey. These should include the basic tool kit and vehicle parts such as a couple of spare tyres, Fan Belt, Alternator, Extra battery, Bulbs, Air Pump, Wipers, Puncture Repair Kit, etc. Vehicle parts that you think are unique to your vehicle should also be carried so that you are prepared if you don’t end up finding that specific part in the country that you are crossing by.
  •  Also, make sure you hire a reliable vehicle shipping agent in advance so that your vehicle can be shipped back to India as soon as you reach London. The vehicle shipments from the UK to India usually take over a month so it is better if you schedule accordingly.

How It All Started!

Nidhi relaxing on top of the car like a boss

It all began with Women Beyond Boundaries. Women Beyond Boundaries is conceptualized by Nidhi Tiwari and Smita Mazumdar. WBB is a platform to empower women drivers with skills to reach out to other women in far-flung areas, in difficult terrain in order to deliver goods and services.

Nidhi solo riding from India to UK

When Nidhi proposed this crazy expedition from Delhi to London in an Indian car, across 17 countries, we promptly hitched our excitement to hers, packed our bags and jumped into the car. Incidentally, Nidhi was the solo driver for the expedition.

Somya and Rashmi while on the way to London

The three of us flagged off from Dhyanchand Stadium on the 23 rd of July 2015 and reached London on the 28 th of October 2015, after having traversed across Myanmar, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium, France and UK.

Rashmi and Soumya on their way to London

The Indian leg was surprisingly the most exciting and adventurous. All went as planned till Manipur. Driving from Kohima to Imphal, we were stuck in the middle of the road due to a strike called at Imphal. The roads were blocked and we could not move further or go back to where we started. So, we were sitting in the car with nowhere to go, watching the protesters pass us by, some with sticks and stones in the hand!

The most epic road trip ever

They looked on us curiously wondering what these women were doing on the road. One guy, drunk to his gills, walked up to us and started talking to us. We kept a straight face and humored him by making some polite conversation. He told us all about how we reminded him of his sisters back home, for about 15 minutes and then moved on.

Phew! So we thought to ourselves, this is what we will have to endure for the next 7 hours. Then came another bunch of guys who first passed us by and then came back curiously peering into our car.

Soumya and Rashmi in Manipur

One of them told us that it was not safe for us to be sitting in the car during these protest hours and urged us to come to his house where he could organize lunch for us. We were in a dilemma now, to trust or not to trust? Just trusted our instincts and drove behind him to his house.

To Trust Or Not To Trust

The three wonder women stuck in a strike

When we parked the car outside his house, it was a by lane with a small wooden entrance and just as we parked, about 4 guys walked out to check us out. We were now getting slightly panicky! Was it a wrong decision to trust our instincts and follow him? He kept asking us to come inside his house. We asked him where his family was and he urged us to come inside his house yet again.

Finally some shelter

We stepped into his house with a lot of trepidation only to be greeted by the most welcoming smiling faces of his mother and two sisters. What a relief! From then on, till 7 in the evening, we probably had a wonderful time.  His mother cooked the most awesome pork and some authentic Manipuri food for us, after which we went for an off-road drive to a picnic spot by the Sekmai river, he played the guitar for us, sang songs and made us feel so at home and like a part of his family.

The family who helped them in their journey

These were the first of the many people we met en route who went out of their way to help us.

Most Memorable Part

Rashmi and Soumya driving through Stans

On completing the trip, people always ask us, what was the most memorable part of the trip? Well, the ‘Stans! Driving through the erstwhile silk route was an onslaught to the senses from the quirky to the exotic, Las Vegas meets Purani Dilli.

The beautiful hills of Stans

Deserts, Mountains, High altitude lakes, Lush valleys, this region has it all! Dictators and nomads, yurts and palaces, the soviet detritus and the excitement of a new nation, over a 1000 years of history to explore and we were straining at the leash!

You Are Only A Stranger Till You Say Hello!

You are only a stranger till you hello

We were completely blown over and amazed by the impact that the Indian culture has over this region, particularly Bollywood. It is almost reverential. We got the first taste of this when we crossed over from China to Kyrgyzstan.

Disco Dancing In The ‘Stans

The tale of an epic journey

It was quite chilly and we were waiting for the customs to clear our papers. This big and burly officer walks up to us and says, “ Hindustan?” we nod yes and he gives us a big grin and breaks into a gig, singing” Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy”! He then went on to ask us about Mithun Chakraborty!

Chilling in Stans

We never thought we would be having a sign language conversation with a Kyrgyz official about Mithun’s health and acting prowess! And it has been like this throughout central Asia. The moment the locals would figure out we were Indians, they would either start singing or dancing to Mithun’s songs.

Soumya and Rashmi at the arctic circle

At a few places, they would even whip out the mobile phones, play the songs and request us to dance along with them. Dancing to “I am a disco dancer” on Tashkent streets is probably our most bizarre but favorite memory.

The most wonderful family they met on their journey

We have always believed that no one parties like the Punjabis, but believe us, they are not a patch on the Uzbekis. They are tireless. This one time, we were at a restaurant and on the way to the restroom, we passed a table of Uzbeks who were celebrating the birth of a child of one of their mates.

Next thing we know, we were practically kidnapped, boxed in between these people, no way out, gyrating to what? I am a disco dancer! Again!

The most bizarre experience would probably be when the ladies would plonk their kids in our arms and demand to click pictures with them. The experience was unsettling and surreal to say the least.

What’s Was Like Traveling As Women Through Central Asia?

Chilling like a boss

These countries are Muslim, but of a more moderate, open and secular variety than you might find in parts of the Middle East. This combined with Soviet and Russian influence, can make Central Asia feel like the land of paradox. It never felt unsafe and we were treated like royalty. We for one felt like exotic spices on this silk route!

Nidhi on the way to London

Another most frequently asked question is how easy or difficult it was to get the permit. The process is laborious but doable. Myanmar and china require permits if you plan to drive. Myanmar regulations require that an escort vehicle follows you from entry to exit. The fee included our accommodation and meals.

In the middle of nowhere

Also, China requires an English speaking guide in the car for self-drive vehicles. We also had to take care of the food and accommodation of the guide. The best way to go about it is to contact travel agencies in these countries and they would process it for a fee (and it doesn’t come cheap!)

Some touristy pleasures

On a journey of this magnitude, the challenges are as much within as outside. But pushing those boundaries was what this expedition was all about.

A few tips:

  • Make sure the paperwork and visas are in order before you leave.
  • If you are planning a road trip, the procurement of visas needs to be a well-choreographed dance, given that some of the countries issue transit visas for a few days only.
  • The entry, traversing the country and the exit need to be well planned.
  • Ensure that all the papers are in order. Make sure you have enough number of copies. If stopped by police, preferably show the copies instead of the originals. Especially, Central Asia and Russia.
  • Diesel was a problem in Uzbekistan in the sense that they didn’t have any! Had to buy in black and adulterated one at that.
  • Ensure that the basic maintenance of the vehicle is carried out every 5000 kilometers.
  • Split your money between travel cards and cash.
  • If traveling in the winter, make sure that you are geared up with enough warm clothing. The cold is brutal. We have the deepest appreciation and respect for Bangalore weather post this expedition.
  • Lastly, ensure that you pack an open mind and a whole lot of curiosity. Travel is liberating and the learning is immense.

So, next time you plan a trip abroad, we recommend Central Asia. Just get off the plane/car and yell “Mithun Chakraborty” and let the magic unfold!

The beautiful feeling of accomplishment

A Delhi car in London- Yes, a feeling of accomplishment!

Unlike driving from Delhi to Gurgaon their only trouble was not a horrendous traffic jam, but forces of nature and society. Rashmi recalls how they were stuck in Imphal for 3 hours due to collapsed bridges in heavy landslide. But like many travellers who explore the goodness of humanity through their travels, Women Without Borders experienced the same.

"When we were stuck due to a landslide in Manipur , the locals offered to help us. We trusted them and stayed with their families and also got to taste home-cooked Manipuri food. The trip reinforced my faith in human goodness."

With constant support from friends, family and Indian government, they have an important message to share.

"We wanted to tell the women of the world that such expeditions are possible and that there was nothing to be scared of."

This will be the second time in 46 years that people will have the opportunity to travel by bus from Delhi to London.

This will be the second time in 46 years that people will have the opportunity to travel by bus from Delhi to London.

The entire road trip will cost you Rs 15 lakhs.

For travellers eyeing the ultimate long road trip of a lifetime, Adventures Overland has announced plans to restart its bus service from Delhi to London with the normalisation of movement on the India-Myanmar border.

The service is expected to begin in September this year with the departure of luxury buses offering state-of-the-art facilities from Delhi.

Once the route is finalised, participants in Adventures Overland’s Bus to London initiative will be able to travel to 18 countries over a distance of approximately 20,000 kilometres in 70 days.

The entire road trip will cost you Rs 15 lakhs. The pricing includes all services, such as tickets, visas, and lodging in various countries.

This will be the second time in 46 years that people will have the opportunity to travel by bus from Delhi to London. A similar bus service was unveiled by a British company in 1957 which connected Kolkata to London via Delhi.

The service however was discontinued a few years after the bus met with an accident. After this, a company by the name Albert Tours started a double-decker bus service between Sydney-India-London which continued till 1976 but was stopped due to the internal conflict in Iran and the tensions between India and Pakistan.

The news bus service will bypass all the routes because of which the previous bus services were discontinued. It will now travel to France via Myanmar, Thailand, China, and Kyrgyzstan, rather than Pakistan and Afghanistan. In addition, a cruise ship will also be used to cross the English Channel.

A ferry service will be utilised to transport the bus from Calais, France, to Dover, England, and will take approximately two hours to conclude. The bus will then depart for London.

The bus will have 20 seats and each of the passengers will have their cabin. It will have everything including dining, drinking, and sleeping facilities. You can travel on this bus with all of the necessary documents, including your visa.

The first hop-on, hop-off bus service from India to England is set to depart Delhi in May 2021.

Travel company Adventures Overland is calling the trip the "longest bus journey in the world" and is offering 20 people the chance to travel from Delhi to London by luxury coach.

The driving expedition specialist announced details of its Bus to London odyssey that will cover more than 20,000 kilometres across 18 countries over 70 days.

Like many things this year, the journey's start date may be postponed further, but owners Sanjay Madan and Tushar Agarwal are keen to push ahead with their ambitious road trip.

"The last few months have altered life for all of us, and the Covid-19 pandemic will continue for a while. Keeping this in mind, we will only start accepting bookings once there is clarity with respect to travel regulations, both locally and internationally," explains Adventures Overland's  website.

When the trip does get going, it looks set to be epic. The bus will depart from Delhi and drive across India before journeying into South-East Asia through Myanmar, Thailand and Laos. It will then head to China and Central Asia, before finishing up in Europe.

Tickets for the road trip cost Dh73,510 per person – although the company says costs could vary closer to the departure date.

Only 20 passengers can book the entire trip, but there are options for anyone keen to join for one or two stages of the cross-country overland journey.

Travellers will be riding in comfort on a converted luxury coach, and will have access to free Wi-Fi and an entertainment system, as well as adjustable business-class seats with plenty legroom. Most nights will be spent at four or five-star hotels, with selected destinations having boutique accommodation.

Journey across 18 countries

The road trip will take in 18 countries, including the Czech Republic, where travellers will get to explore Prague. Unsplash

After Laos the bus will continue on to China. Travellers will then spend 16 days journeying through the sprawling country with planned stops including meeting pandas in Chengdu, walking the Great Wall, visiting the Mogao Caves and driving through the Gobi Desert.

Food is a big part of travel and Adventures Overland will organise meals at local restaurants and cafes in each location, and will provide English-speaking guides to share historical facts and interesting information about each destination.

From China, the bus will trundle along the well-trodden route of the Silk Road, crossing into Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The expedition will then head into Russia, with planned visits to Astrakhan, Volga and Moscow, as well as a day cruise on the Caspian Sea.

The final stage of the journey will take in Europe, starting in the Baltic countries of Latvia and Lithuania, and continuing on to Poland. Travellers will visit the Czech capital of Prague, and Frankfurt in Germany, then drive towards Belgium.

After 68 days on the road, passengers will arrive in London with two days reserved for sightseeing in the UK's capital.

What’s included?

Included in the cost of the trip are all hotel stays, guides and fees related to visas, immigration, sightseeing and movement permits. Planned meals and daily snacks and drinks are also included in the cost, but additional sustenance costs  extra.

Sightseeing costs are included in the fare, with trips to places like the Great Wall of China on the itinerary. Unsplash

Adventures Overland's owners could set a new world record with the trip, but it won't be their first. The pair are already Guinness World Record holders, having made the longest journey in a foreign country when they travelled 17,107km across Australia in 2013.

London calling

This won't be the first time that Adventures Overland has driven from India to the UK. The company has hosted self-driving expeditions  for which people have come together to embark on mass road trips from Delhi to London. However, it's the first time the company will organise the journey by coach. The return leg will set off from England back to India in August 2021.

Although the trip looks set to be the first overland bus journey to travel from Delhi to London, it cannot claim the record for being the first tourist bus to travel from India to the UK. That title belongs to the Indiaman bus, which travelled from London to Kolkata and back again in 1957. It had 20 passengers and round-trip fares reportedly cost only £65 (Dh312) per person.

'The ultimate adventure': Why more Indian travelers are taking extreme road trips

Meenakshi Sai, 51, looks like any other Indian woman, dressed in a saree and sporting a bindi on her forehead.

But unlike many women in her country, she's been driving since she was 18 years old. As of 2020, less than 7% of India's 236 million drivers were women, according to the data website Statista.

"I have been driving since I was legally allowed to and have always enjoyed the freedom it afforded me and the feeling of being independent," said Sai. "After my only daughter went away to boarding school, I had a lot of time on my hands. I started traveling a lot, both solo and with friends."

Sai was one of a team of eight Indians who drove 20,000 km (12,430 miles) across five countries from Coimbatore, India to St. Petersburg, Russia to spread awareness about cervical cancer.

More Indians are taking road trips these days — both within the country and beyond, solo and in groups — as access to better vehicles and better roads grows in the country.

There's also the rise of slow travel. However, Sai took her first road trip back in 2016, before it became a trend.

"I drove to Thailand with a group of 20 people," she said, "from Manipur in India's northeast to Bangkok, which took us 13 days."

Her next big road trip was from India to London, which she called "complicated."

"It took me six months to draw up the itinerary," she said. "It was difficult to find anyone in my own circle of friends and family who had the time or were willing to invest the money in this trip."

In the end, she found two women through social media — one from Mumbai, the other from Pollachi — who were interested in joining her.

Tata Motors sponsored the trip, which stretched for more than 14,900 miles and coincided with the 70th anniversary of India's independence. The journey took 70 days, taking the three women across 24 countries, including Russia, Poland and Uzbekistan.

"We drove around 600 kilometers a day," Sai said. "Many countries had given us date-specific visas so we could not afford to be delayed, even by a few hours."

Road conditions combined with changing weather and altitude levels made the trip difficult, she said — as did the fact that she's vegetarian, which made suitable food options challenging to find in many countries.

"I ate a lot of potatoes and bread in countries like Kyrgyzstan where there was a lot of meat," she said.

Sai now runs an overland driving company that organizes road trips across countries like Namibia, Georgia, Armenia, Nepal and Mongolia.

"Driving through a country is the way to see it, connecting with locals, stopping where you feel like, border crossings, and thriving on uncertainty. I also love the freedom that the open road gives me," she said.

100 road trips, 50 countries

In 2001, Mumbai-based Rishad Saam Mehta, 51, drove from Delhi to the Nubra Valley, an area of Ladakh in northeast India.

"It was my first drive in the high Himalayas, and I didn't know how dangerous and narrow and high the roads were, and the havoc that altitude can play on one physically. It was a lesson learnt the hard way," said the journalist and author.

Since then, Mehta has taken more than 100 road trips across some 50 countries. One really exciting one was the drive from Munich to Mumbai, which lasted two months and covered eight countries, he said.

He also drives different cars, depending on the trip, he said.

"I did a drive in a Ferrari through the Bavarian and Austrian Alps, then a snow drive in Spiti in Northern India in a Toyota Fortuner, then a fall drive in New England in a Ford Bronco," he said. "These were all favorites."

His advice? "There are many great drives around the world, some I come across by chance, some I research beforehand
but the company has to be good, otherwise, it is a disaster," he said.

The 'Great India World Trip'

Tushar Agarwal, a software engineer, drove from London to Delhi in 2010.

He said the journey of 51 days was life-changing and prompted him to resign from his job in London, move back to Delhi, and co-found a company called Adventures Overland with his friend Sanjay Madan in 2012.

"I felt that this was my purpose in life
there was no looking back," said Agarwal.

Today, Adventure Overland is one of India's biggest road trip companies. It organizes curated driving trips across the globe.

Agarwal has traveled to 92 countries and gone on road trips in six continents. His most adventurous trip, called the " Great India World Trip ," is now a 10-episode series on Discovery Channel. Along with his co-founder Madan, the journey took them across six continents and 50 countries, securing them a Guinness World Record for the longest journey by car in a single country for their 10,600-mile trek across Australia.

Traversing beautiful terrains and driving through unknown territory, border crossings and contending with unfamiliar food and inclement weather may not be for everybody.

But as Mehta said, "The sense of freedom and not being shackled to timetables and schedules
and also the spontaneity it affords, makes driving the ultimate adventure."

There’s something about Europe in the spring – driving from Cambridge to Hamburg to Lisbon, Stratford to London, Sparta to Copenhagen to Vienna, and then to Paris. And especially in an all-electric 2024 Nissan Ariya , and doing it all in one day and on a single charge.

Road Trip: Cambridge to Paris in a 2024 Nissan Ariya Back to video

And yes, of course there’s more to it. In addition to the European versions, these are all towns in Ontario, and it was 301 kilometres to drive to all of them. Yes, the route was a bit of fun with the names — Nissan called it the Ariya European Tour — but it was also an interesting road trip and a chance to stretch the Ariya’s electric legs.

What’s the Nissan Ariya all about?

Nissan started its battery journey with the Leaf , the first mass-produced modern electric car when it debuted for 2010. It received a makeover for 2017 and was joined by the Ariya crossover/SUV for 2023.

The Ariya starts out in front-wheel drive (FWD), with one motor that makes 238 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive (AWD) models add a second motor, which combine to churn out 389 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. The AWD versions are dubbed e-4orce, pronounced “e-force.” Beyond that, both the FWD and AWD offer a standard or long-range battery, the latter indicated by a “+” in the name. Within those variables of motors and batteries, the lineup’s overall driving range on a charge stretches from 330 to 465 kilometres.

The Ariya starts with the Engage FWD with standard battery at $52,998 (all trims qualify for the federal $5,000 “green” rebate, along with any applicable provincial rebates). But one must experience Europe in style, and so I was in the top-trim Evolve+ e-4orce with Platinum+ Package at $69,998. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) rates it at 428 km, more than enough for my trek through Britain and Europe.

The first leg: Cambridge to Stratford

I set out from Cambridge with my co-driver, Quebec-based auto writer Dominic Boucher. The route was primarily secondary highways, most with a maximum speed of 80 km/h. There were several journalists on the route, and there was a friendly competition to see who could drive the most efficiently. We never held up traffic, but we did employ the habits that work on all vehicles, gas or electric , including accelerating and braking smoothly; looking ahead to anticipate issues, so you’re not sitting behind the stopped truck hoping someone will let you in; and maintaining a steady speed, instead of on-the-throttle, off-the-throttle (which is not only inefficient, but very annoying for your passengers).

As with all electric vehicles (EVs), the Ariya uses regenerative braking , capturing energy otherwise lost during deceleration and feeding it back into the battery as electricity. It can be decreased or increased, and will bring the Ariya to almost a full stop, but you do have to use the brake to do so completely, rather than the true “one-pedal” driving on some EVs where you only need to use the throttle. That’s a surprising omission on a car that’s geared toward city driving.

Our tour first took us to New Hamburg, as opposed to the older Hamburg in Germany. If we’d been here 108 years ago, we might have continued north to Berlin, but that Ontario city was renamed Kitchener due to anti-German sentiment during the First World War. We could have been in an electric car back then too, although that early era of EVs was almost over. Their rudimentary batteries didn’t have a lot of range, but they started instantly, while gasoline cars had to be cranked. That could be difficult and potentially dangerous, and for a while, electric cars were very popular. But Cadillac came out with a self-starter in 1912 , and before long, gas had knocked electricity off the map. Meanwhile, our map took us to Lisbon — a city in Portugal, a small community in Ontario — and then on to Stratford.

The second leg: Stratford to London

Stratford is famous for its annual Shakespearean festival , and is also the hometown of Justin Bieber. While my tastes run more to the Bard than the Bieb, there’s enough room in the city for both.

Speaking of room, the Ariya has that, and legroom is generous in both the front and rear seats. Nissan calls its chairs “anti-gravity” and they’re comfortable and supportive, including on a full day’s drive. Cargo capacity is 646 litres with the rear seats up, and up to 1,691 litres when they’re folded. I don’t golf and have never packed clubs into a vehicle — I figure if I wanted that little ball enough to chase it, I wouldn’t have knocked it away in the first place — so I’ll take Nissan’s word on it that the Ariya can get three golf bags to the links.

The third leg: London to Vienna

I drove from Britain to Austria via Greece and Denmark, as this leg included passing through Sparta, founded by a Quaker in 1837; and Copenhagen, not far from the shore of Lake Erie.

The Ariya’s 442 lb-ft of torque will move it smartly off the line as needed, but this model isn’t about pure grunt. Instead, it’s a smooth operator that works well as an everyday commuter. A light foot on the throttle produces linear acceleration, and the ride is quiet and composed, with a tight turning circle and decent steering feel.

The AWD system includes torque vectoring, distributing power between the individual wheels. My drive was on a dry day, but on a previous event I was encouraged to turn an Ariya hard on a water-soaked course, and the system helped to keep it under control instead of spinning out.

The fourth leg: Vienna to Paris

One of Thomas Edison’s grandfathers was born in Ontario’s Vienna, and young Thomas often visited the family farm there. Later on, Edison famously clashed with Nikola Tesla over the merits of alternating current (AC), which Tesla championed; or direct current (DC), which was Edison’s preference. Tesla’s AC won for households, but both types are used today, of course, and like virtually all electric cars, the Ariya can take both. It will fill up on a 240-volt charger in about 10 to 14 hours; or on a public DC fast charger, that drops to about half an hour for the battery to go from 10 to 80 per cent.

Vienna was home to an Edison Museum but it has since closed, and the artifacts have been moved for safekeeping until a permanent place can be found for them. The town’s main street was obviously a busy place with numerous stores and businesses, but sadly, as in many small communities, all now sit empty.

“Empty” doesn’t describe the Ariya, especially at this top trim level. Features include a curved screen housing dual 12-inch gauge cluster and infotainment displays, parking assist, panoramic sunroof, wireless charger, head-up display, digital camera mirror, premium audio, and heated front and rear seats and steering wheel. Those may seem odd on an EV, but you tend to turn down the cabin heat if your hands and butt are warm, which saves even more battery power.

The Ariya includes ProPilot Assist , Nissan’s highway driving assist feature that combines adaptive cruise control and lane centring. U.S. buyers can opt for a hands-free version, but it involves pre-mapped roads and that hasn’t been done in Canada yet, so there’s no estimate on when it’ll be offered up here.

There’s a volume dial for the stereo, and the on-screen icons are easy to figure out, but I’m less enamoured with other controls. For climate or drive functions, you press icons on the woodgrain-style dash and centre console. This requires eyes off the road to find the right spot, and a firm press to make things happen. The centre console also slides electrically forward or back. It seems a needless add-on, and when it’s forward, the armrest isn’t in line with the door rests, as those who like to rest their elbows will find out. A corresponding drawer also slides out electrically from the lower dash.

The end of the journey

There is an Eiffel Tower, but it’s inexplicably in Straffordville, about 70 km south of Paris. It’s also only about seven feet tall, wrapped in Christmas lights in someone’s driveway. Paris itself is a lovely town of about 15,000 people, with a beautiful historic downtown. Our European tour ended at the Dog-Eared CafĂ© , so named because it’s a combination coffee shop and secondhand bookstore, where I bought a couple of volumes for my bookshelves.

My co-driver Dominic and I spent equal time behind the wheel, and we ended up in third place for efficiency at 16.9 kWh/100 km, and with 157 km remaining on our battery. It was a tight race, as first and second went to 16.6 and 16.7 kWh, respectively; others came in as high as 20.4 kWh. We couldn’t have done it all in one day between the better-known versions of all those cities, but this closer-to-home version was a fun and fuel-free trip.

Jil McIntosh graduated from East York Collegiate in Toronto, and then continued her education at the School of Hard Knocks. Her early jobs including driving a taxi in Toronto; and warranty administration in a new-vehicle dealership, where she also held information classes for customers, explaining the inner mechanical workings of vehicles and their features.

Jil McIntosh is a freelance writer who has been writing for Driving.ca since 2016, but she’s been a professional writer starting when most cars still had carburetors. At the age of eleven, she had a story published in the defunct Toronto Telegram newspaper, for which she was paid $25; given the short length of the story and the dollar’s buying power at the time, that might have been the relatively best-paid piece she’s ever written.

An old-car enthusiast who owns a 1947 Cadillac and 1949 Studebaker truck, she began her writing career crafting stories for antique-car and hot-rod car club magazines. When the Ontario-based newspaper Old Autos started up in 1987, dedicated to the antique-car hobby, she became a columnist starting with its second issue; the newspaper is still around and she still writes for it. Not long after the Toronto Star launched its Wheels section in 1986 – the first Canadian newspaper to include an auto section – she became one of its regular writers. She started out writing feature stories, and then added “new-vehicle reviewer” to her resume in 1999. She stayed with Wheels, in print and later digital as well, until the publication made a cost-cutting decision to shed its freelance writers. She joined Driving.ca the very next day.

In addition to Driving.ca, she writes for industry-focused publications, including Automotive News Canada and Autosphere. Over the years, her automotive work also appeared in such publications as Cars & Parts, Street Rodder, Canadian Hot Rods, AutoTrader, Sharp, Taxi News, Maclean’s, The Chicago Tribune, Forbes Wheels, Canadian Driver, Sympatico Autos, and Reader’s Digest. Her non-automotive work, covering such topics as travel, food and drink, rural living, fountain pen collecting, and celebrity interviews, has appeared in publications including Harrowsmith, Where New Orleans, Pen World, The Book for Men, Rural Delivery, and Gambit.

More than 10,000 London black-cab drivers launch ÂŁ250m Uber lawsuit

Individuals could win ÂŁ25,000 or more if they are successful in claim Uber broke taxi booking rules

More than 10,500 of London’s black-cab drivers have launched a £250m legal case against Uber, accusing it of breaking the capital’s taxi booking rules and deliberately misleading authorities to secure a licence.

The case, which has been filed in the high court in London by the litigation management firm RGL, resurrects a claim first raised five years ago, related to the way the ride-hailing app operated in London between 2012 and 2018.

Cabbies allege that Uber allowed drivers to take bookings directly from customers rather than through a centralised system such as those used by minicab services, in a direct breach of private hire rules.

They allege Uber was aware of the rules and deliberately misled Transport for London (TfL) about its booking model in order to obtain an operating licence and take business from black-cab drivers.

Uber has denied the allegations and says the claim is unfounded.

The drivers, who are being advised by the law firm Mishcon de Reya, argue in their suit that they faced unfair competition, and lost out on customers and income, as a result.

Garry White, a black-cab driver of 36 years, said: “This claim seeks justice and fair compensation on behalf of cab drivers across London. Uber seems to believe it is above the law and cabbies across London have suffered loss of earnings because of it. It is time they were held to account.”

RGL said that if the cabbies were successful in their claim they could secure more than ÂŁ250m, with individuals potentially winning ÂŁ25,000 or more.

An Uber spokesperson said: “These old claims are completely unfounded. Uber operates lawfully in London, is fully licensed by TfL , and is proud to serve millions of passengers and drivers across the capital.”

It marks the latest bout of legal trouble for Uber. In March, the San Francisco-based company reached an A$272m settlement (£142m) to compensate taxi and hire-car drivers who said they lost out when the company “aggressively” moved into the Australian market.

after newsletter promotion

That class action, which was launched five years ago, was filed on behalf of 8,000 taxi and hire-car owners and drivers, who argued that Uber X launched in Australia with the intention of hurting their business. The suit also alleged that the company used unlicensed cars with unaccredited drivers in a “conspiracy by unlawful means” and misled regulators.

Dale Forwood, a black-cab driver of 12 years, said he hoped the London case would bring justice for local cabbies. “I am delighted to see this claim being filed today and that we will finally have our day in court,” he said. “Having seen for myself the harm that Uber’s unlawful behaviour has caused to hard-working cabbies, I look forward to justice being served.”
