Experience the Thrill of the River Fall Baseball League

"lead us from the unreal to the real" quote by b. upanishad as stated by phil knight founder of nike.

Baseball has long been regarded as America's pastime, invoking a sense of nostalgia and community bonding. Over the years, the sport has experienced fluctuations in popularity, yet the recent upswing in interest within our community cannot be denied. One solution to sustain and amplify this newfound enthusiasm is the introduction of "River Fall Ball," a unique fall baseball league designed to cater to the evolving needs of families and players. We explain why fall baseball is needed and how River Fall Ball can answer the call by offering a flexible and inclusive approach to the sport.

In recent times, baseball has experienced a resurgence in popularity within the Rocky River & surrounding communities. The camaraderie, skill development, and healthy competition that the sport offers have captured the attention of both children and parents alike. This surge in interest is not only a testament to the enduring appeal of baseball but also highlights the potential for its growth within our local context.

Addressing the Gap: River Fall Ball

While traditional baseball leagues like the RRLL and Local Travel Programs play a crucial role in nurturing young talent, they primarily operate during the regular baseball season. The demand for more opportunities to play beyond this period, especially in the fall, is palpable. This is where "River Fall Ball" steps in.

1. Extending the Baseball Season

River Fall Ball aims to address the gap between the regular season and off-season by providing an extended period for players to enjoy the sport they love. This extension not only keeps players engaged year-round but also ensures a smoother transition between regular and off-seasons, preventing skill stagnation and burnout.

2. Inclusivity: Embracing Multi-Sport Athletes

One of the unique features of River Fall Ball is its accommodating approach to multi-sport athletes. Many young players participate in a variety of sports, and this can sometimes lead to scheduling conflicts. To counter this, River Fall Ball offers a solution – each team reserves two "free agent" roster spots. These spots cater to players who may be committed to other fall sports but still wish to play baseball when their schedule permits. This inclusivity not only caters to individual preferences but also enhances the league's overall flexibility.  After the summer season, baseball teams often disband, and players disperse, each returning to their own routines. River Fall Ball, however, extends this sense of camaraderie by providing a reason for friends and teammates to come together once again. The league becomes a hub for the Rocky River community and neighboring areas, where connections formed on the diamond can flourish beyond the summer months.

3. Strengthening Community Bonds

Fall baseball serves as an opportunity for the community to come together once again after the regular season. With schools back in session and families settling into their routines, River Fall Ball becomes a focal point for reconnecting with neighbors and friends. The shared passion for the sport fosters an environment where bonds are strengthened and new friendships are forged.

4. Skill Enhancement and Development

The off-season is often a critical period for skill enhancement and development. Fall baseball allows players to work on their weaknesses and fine-tune their strengths, ensuring that they return to the regular season better equipped and more confident in their abilities. The additional playing time also provides coaches with a platform to experiment with strategies and hone their coaching skills.

As the interest in baseball continues to rise within our community, it is imperative to provide avenues that cater to the evolving needs of players and families. River Fall Ball presents a compelling solution to bridge the gap between the regular season and off-season, offering a flexible and inclusive platform for players to continue enjoying the sport they love. By extending the baseball season, accommodating multi-sport athletes, fostering community bonds, and enhancing skill development, River Fall Ball cements its position as a vital component of our local sports landscape.

Avon Lake gets a big lift, downs Rocky River, 6-0

May 4—Avon Lake needed a spark after going 3-11 coming back from their spring break trip in early April with a 5-1 start.

Hosting Rocky River on May 4, the Shoremen found exactly what they were looking for. Young starter Blake Andresen pitched a complete game two-hitter for the Shoremen and the offense was led by Cavin Kretchmar's two hits and two RBI, for a 6-0 win.

"At the beginning, my mindset was just to go out there and throw strikes, trust my defense, and I know I did that," Andresen said. "My boys went out there and defended every single ground ball. I kept throwing strikes, and the offspeed was really working."

Rocky River hit the ball hard on a warm day along the lakefront, with Josh Mommers drilling the very first pitch of the game into deep center field on what looked to be extra bases. Instead, Alex Soloff made an incredible diving effort, snaring the ball in the webbing of his glove and earning a hearty cheer — and some relief for Andresen.

"That first pitch, I thought there was a chance it was going to be gone," Andresen said as he let out a sigh of relief. "He went out there and made a really nice play."

Kretchmar and the Shoremen bats got things rolling in the home half of the first frame, with Isaac Soloff and Cole Cartwright notching back-to-back two out singles to put runners on the corners. Kretchmar saw one pitch and lined it hard into left field and scored the elder Soloff brother.

Kretchmar came up again in the third and with the bases loaded and no outs, lifted a ball into center field. It was deep enough to plate Hayden Blosser and extend the lead to 2-0.

"I made a huge adjustment today, just trying to keep my hands high and go straight to the ball," Kretchmar explained. "I was really just focusing on getting the barrel on the ball and putting it in play."

Avon Lake (9-12) needed a game like May 4's, with no errors on the defensive side and the enthusiasm came pouring out of the first base dugout on a double play, with Grant Lehoty securing the foul out behind the plate in the fourth inning and firing down to first base to erase a Pirates baserunner.

"You know, baseball's a funny game at times," Avon Lake coach Andrew Means said with a nod. "We've learned that this year. (Right now) we're thin, have some guys banged up and we weren't playing the style of baseball we're accustomed to — we got away from it a little bit.

"Today, we proved to ourselves that we can still do it. Just get a little bit of confidence on their side and hopefully we can carry that over into this week."

Rocky River (17-4) started the year 15-0 but has now dropped four of its last six dating back to April 27. Head coach Ed Piazza said players were pressing, and for a program that hasn't been accustomed to winning and then winning in bunches, it's been a little tougher to bounce back from the recent skid.

Luckily for the Pirates, there's still time to iron things out before playoff baseball kicks off May 11 in some areas of the state.

"Like I just told them right now, we're in first place in the conference and we're 17-4," Piazza said. "There's a lot of success that we've had. But having success means you have to work double.

"When you're in that losing culture, you just leave and everything's fine. And right now, they're still learning how to win."

The Pirates have a two game set with Bay on May 6 and 7 while Avon Lake is slated for a rivalry matchup with Avon on May 6-7.

(1) Rocky River vs. (15) Norton

What : Division II district semifinal

When : 2 p.m., May 20

Where : North Ridgeville High School, 34600 Bainbridge Road, North Ridgeville

Records : Rocky River 22-5, Norton 15-10

Rocky River’s path : Defeated Tallmadge 4-2

Norton’s path : Defeated Cleveland Central Catholic 19-0 and Benedictine 7-4

For the record : No baseball game is a guarantee in the district round. Rocky River knows this, qualifying for this district last year as a 23-seed and kept it close with district champion Bay. This year, the Pirates are the top seed in the bracket and have three aces at their disposal — senior Thomas Rossi and juniors Rees Heigle and Michael Perry. Ed Piazza has guided the Pirates to their first 20-plus win campaign since 1999 and their first back-to-back district semifinal in some time, as well. Rocky River has hitters, and they will need hot hitting to advance. The Norton lineup is led by Paul Mattei, who has a .525 batting average and a 1.272 OPS, scoring 28 runs and racking up 13 steals, with Jake Ford’s three homers and 24 RBI leading the team in those categories. The pitching staff is led by freshman Jackson Lewis, Malone signee Andrew Lewis and Caiden Shockey. Ultimately, the Pirates can continue forward and into the district final.

Fitzgerald’s pick : Rocky River

Kwan delighted the crowd at Classic Auto Group Park with a three-run home run while he worked toward returning to the big leagues from a pulled left hamstring. GOING TO THE MOON

By Bill Barich

July 22, 1991 P. 74

The New Yorker , July 22, 1991 P. 74

ANNALS OF SPORT about a barnstorming tour through California by a Soviet baseball team called the Moscow Red Devils. The tour was arranged by Tim Hickerson, a former minor leaguer and the proprietor of a travel agency in San Francisco. He arranges vacations abroad for American amateurs who want to play against foreign teams, and vice versa. The Red Devils came as part of an exchange program with Monte Vista High School, in Danville, Calif. The team also played games at Diablo Valley College, near San Francisco, & Delta Junior College, in Stockton. Baseball is a fledgling sport in the U.S.S.R. The team was formed in 1987, with players who had little or no experience. They now play on the level of a good American high school team. Andrei Tzelikovsky, their right fielder, is the team's best speaker of English, and acted as spokesman. He tells how he became interested in baseball when he was a child in Montreal, where his father had a post with the Soviet trade mission. Hickerson tells about his experience of coaching teams in Italy, which he did after he stopped playing. Short on cash, the team hawked Russian dolls, watches, etc to the locals. Their game at Diablo Valley was called with the Red Devils down 21 runs in the middle of the seventh; they lost to the Mustangs of Delta Junior College by four runs. At Monte Vista High School, the weather did them a sort of favor, turning cool and blustery and reminding them of Moscow. "Going to the moon" is Soviet baseball slang for a player moving from the dirt of the infield to the crescent-shaped grass.

European Union criticizes Russia for removing Estonian buoys, demand an explanation from Moscow

BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Friday called the removal of Estonian buoys by Russian border guards on a river separating the Baltic country from Russia “unacceptable,” and demanded an explanation from Moscow and the immediate return of the orange floats.

Early Thursday, Estonian border guards noticed that their Russian counterparts had removed 25 of the 50 buoys that Estonia had installed on the Narva River to prevent boats from accidentally crossing the border.

Borrell said the incident “is part of a broader pattern of provocative behavior and hybrid actions by Russia.”

Estonia also dubbed it “unacceptable,” but said its response “remains calm and clear-eyed.”

"We treat this as a provocative border incident,” the Foreign Ministry in Tallinn said Thursday.

For decades, Estonia and Russia have installed buoys on the Narva River for the summer, with the towns of Narva on the Estonian side and Ivangorod on the Russian bank, largely in mutual agreement.

Every year, the marking of the shipping routes is rechecked because “the riverbed changes over time,” said Eerik Purgel, the local Estonian Border Guard head. Last year, Russia said it did not agree with the locations of the Estonian buoys.

This year, "we decided to release the floating marks into the water for the summer season according to a 2022 agreement, because they are necessary to avoid navigational errors, so that our fishermen and other hobbyists do not accidentally wander into Russian waters,” he said.

The first 50 buoys were installed on May 13. However, 25 of them were removed by their Russian counterparts early in the morning 10 days later, he added.

The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday summoned Russia’s deputy head of mission, the Baltic News Service agency said. BNS quoted Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna as saying that they “clearly expressed to the Russian charge d’affaires that such actions are provocative and unacceptable."

Estonia’s Foreign Ministry said the action “fits well within the broader pattern of Russia’s provocative behavior,” and drew parallels to the border mapping incidents in the Baltic Sea earlier this week. According to media reports, Moscow could revise the borders of its territorial waters in the region.

The draft proposal was published on an official Russian government website for draft legislation but disappeared hours after it was posted on Wednesday. It wasn’t immediately clear why.

Russian media said the Defense Ministry in Moscow had suggested updating the coordinates used to measure the strip of territorial waters off its mainland coast and that of its islands in the Baltic Sea. The existing coordinates were approved in 1985, the ministry says, adding that they were “based on small-scale nautical navigation maps” and don’t correspond to the “modern geographical situation.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later said there was “nothing political” in the Defense Ministry’s proposal, and Russian news agencies said Moscow did not intend to revise the border or the width of its territorial waters.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, Finland and Sweden have joined NATO, meaning that the Baltic Sea — Russia’s maritime point of access to the city of St. Petersburg and its Kaliningrad enclave — is now almost surrounded by members of the military alliance.
