'Vikings Voyage' Lets Fans Face The Pros At U.S. Bank Stadium

August 26, 2016 / 5:15 PM CDT / CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- For the first time Vikings fans got a chance to experience "Vikings Voyage" Friday. It's another unique aspect of U.S. Bank Stadium where fans can test their skills through virtual reality and other methods.

It starts with the new Vikings Locker Room where you'll find a little something for every Vikings fan.

"I'm buying tattoos, can coolers, a ton of accessories," Vikings fan Kris Johnson said.

When you walk up the stairs from the locker room, you'll walk into a world of Vikings history and virtual reality.

"These are RFID bands," Vikings representative Erin Swartz said. "These will allow people to log in and track their scores throughout the space."

Wristbands in place, fans got a chance to test their skills in the Vikings Voyage. There's a game where you can try and catch passes from Teddy Bridgewater.

"It was awesome. Everything was so real," Vikings fan Maddux Shockman said.

"It's pretty cool. It's real life. So it seems like you are actually there and actually playing," Vikings fan Raegan Johnson said.

There are even opportunities to test your strength and test your knowledge of Purple history -- with the Lore of the North. Milestones accomplished by players of the past are on display, including a tribute to Cris Carter's 1,000 catches.

"One thousand of these balls are suspended from the ceiling which gives you a sense of the enormity of that accomplishment," Swartz said.

Everything here is about connecting fans with the team. Even if that means running a drill where you can compare your time to Vikings cornerback Terence Newman.

"He was a little bit faster. Just a bit," said fan Micah Reed.

The Vikings Voyage will open at 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning, a few hours before kick-off.

Dimensional Innovations partners with Minnesota Vikings to create the interactive “Vikings Voyage” fan experience at U.S. Bank Stadium

Shane mailman on --> november 1, 2016.

Minnesota Vikings fans can now experience the team’s past and present in a 10,000-square-foot interactive space inside the new U.S. Bank Stadium. Designed and fabricated by Dimensional Innovations, the Vikings Voyage provides fans with a dynamic experience that is free for fans of all ages.

“As an organization, we constantly look to innovate and provide the best fan experience possible, and our approach was no different with the addition of the Vikings Voyage,” said Vikings Owner/President Mark Wilf. “The Voyage brings fans together, allowing them to engage with their family and friends while celebrating Vikings history.”

Within the innovative space, fans will have the opportunity to participate in combine-themed events, including catching passes while wearing a virtual reality Vikings helmet, running a shuttle drill against a current Vikings player’s pace, and hitting a tackling sled that measures impact force. The space allows fans to track scores and compete against others at the various stations by wearing bracelets connected to the RFID system.

“We came to DI to help us develop how this could be a mix of your traditional hall of fame experience – something that’s got the artifacts and memorabilia, but also something that can be fun and interactive for fans of all ages,” said Jenny Haag, Senior Manager of Stadium Partnership for the Minnesota Vikings.

Along with competitive games, the Voyage includes a full-size ship hull that features a 30-foot projection screen displaying historic and modern-day Vikings footage. Fans can also learn about the history of the Vikings uniform and pads through a transparent organic light-emitting diode (OLED) uniform interactive – the first of its kind in an NFL stadium – that will showcase changes in equipment and materials over the course of the franchise’s history. Vikings legends were also brought to life within the space. The enormity of Cris Carter’s incredible receiving record is captured by hanging 1,000 chrome footballs from the ceiling in a visually stunning display. Fans can also sit right beside the Purple People Eaters, providing a great photo opportunity for fans of all ages. And ‘Lore of the North’ features nostalgic and iconic elements from the teams’ history that are carefully displayed with photos and graphics to tell their story.

“DI is thrilled to be involved with the project, and it gave us the opportunity to showcase so many of our capabilities: design, fabrication, innovation, technology and more. But the real excitement is seeing fans using and enjoying the space,” Brent Haag, Account Director for Dimensional Innovations Sports Practice.

Football fans can adopt three-point stances to hit a pad defensive-line-style, compare their jumping and running prowess against that of real players, and put on virtual-reality goggles to field passes from a virtual quarterback.

The exhibit’s various hands-on stations will feed wannabe players’ results into electronic displays and lighting strips, then record their stats onto special bracelets that are theirs to keep for future visits.

The 10,000-square-foot exhibit, directly above the team store and also reachable via the Minneapolis skyway, will have much to offer less-active visitors, as well.

This includes:

  • An homage to star player Cris Carter featuring 1,000 chrome footballs hanging from the ceiling to symbolize his career catches.
  • A “battle armor” exhibit that displays Vikings team uniforms from 1969, 1989 and today, along with a touch-screen brimming with details about uniform features.
  • A 40-foot-long space made to resemble the hull of a historical Viking longship, with a 27-foot-long, 7-foot-tall screen displaying Vikings video.
  • A “Purple People Eaters” sculpture featuring likenesses of the four seated players from the 1960s and ’70s teams — Alan Page, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall and Gary Larsen — as depicted in a now-iconic photograph. There will be room for visitors to sit beside them.
  • A “Lore of the North” museum section with historical Vikings football artifacts, such as pieces of the goalposts torn down by fans when the team ended its Met Stadium run.

The Vikings said the “Voyage” exhibit will be available to anyone attending a Vikings game or Vikings-themed event at U.S. Bank Stadium, but visitors will need to reserve a spot in advance. The exhibit will accommodate roughly 250 people at one time.

It will be open before and after games and Vikings events in order to accommodate as many people as possible.

The exhibit is funded entirely with private money, the team said.

Vikings receiver Jordan Addison nursing another ankle injury after exiting victory over Giants

Jordan Addison, who had three catches for 35 yards, left in the third quarter after being tackled low. Coach Kevin O’Connell said it’s not the same ankle Addison injured previously.

By Andrew Krammer

vikings voyage at u.s. bank stadium

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Vikings receiver Jordan Addison did not need a walking boot or crutches to exit the visiting locker room at MetLife Stadium after Sunday’s 28-6 victory over the Giants .

But he wasn’t interested in talking about the ankle injury that forced him to leave the game in the third quarter. Addison did not answer questions about how he was feeling while walking out of the locker room. Head coach Kevin O’Connell said Addison injured his other ankle — but not the one in which he suffered a high ankle sprain on Aug. 14 and missed a few weeks of practice.

Meaning Addison, who had three catches for 35 yards, has suffered two ankle injuries in the past month.

“We’re going to have him fully evaluated,” O’Connell said. “Don’t know the severity of it yet, but Jordan made some big plays for us early on there, and to lose him kind of affected a little bit of the flow there in the second half. But hopefully, it will be a shorter-term thing.”

Center Garrett Bradbury also played through a knee injury, O’Connell added.

Addison appeared to get injured in the third quarter when he was tackled low by Giants linebacker Darius Muasau . The catch was negated because of a holding call on left tackle Christian Darrisaw .

Addison exited the game immediately. Five plays later, quarterback Sam Darnold found receiver Jalen Nailor for a 21-yard touchdown. Receiver Justin Jefferson liked what he saw from his fellow receivers.

“We got some guys,” Jefferson said. “We’ve been saying that we have the talent in this [receiver] room to compete with anybody in this league. [Nailor] doesn’t get a lot of time on the field, so when those opportunities come, making the most of them.”

Pass rushing: a team effort

The Vikings defense harassed Giants quarterback Daniel Jones to the tune of 12 hits, including five sacks, in a game where New York consistently trailed and attempted 42 passes. Nine Vikings defenders tagged off on Jones, who saw a flurry of real blitzes and fake pressures designed to scheme up one-on-one pass rushing opportunities for others.

Four defensive linemen — Andrew Van Ginkel , Dallas Turner , Harrison Phillips and Patrick Jones II — combined for five sacks.

“Our room is crazy,” edge rusher Jonathan Greenard said. “Pick your poison when it comes to our room. Nobody’s trying to do too much, nobody is thinking they’re better than anybody else. If you have an opportunity, go make it.”

Related Coverage

vikings voyage at u.s. bank stadium

Greenard, the Vikings’ top free agent signing in March, didn’t land a sack. But he drilled Jones on a third down in the second quarter. He said he’s focused on a different stat after failing to win the previous two Week 1 games for the Houston Texans. Greenard was inactive for season openers in 2020 and 2021.

“First time starting 1-0,” Greenard said, “so I’m good.”

Ham’s uncharacteristic blunder

Fullback C.J. Ham , a two-time Pro Bowler, has touched the ball 114 times in his nine-year NFL career. But for just the second time on Sunday, he put the ball on the ground. Ham coughed up a fumble on the Vikings’ opening possession during an 8-yard catch. The turnover set up the Giants offense deep in Vikings territory and led a 23-yard field goal.

“The team played great,” Ham said. “Obviously made a mistake, fumbled the ball. That’s something that was hard for me, but our team was resilient. They picked me back up.”

  • Safety Harrison Smith intercepted a desperation throw from Jones on fourth down, marking the 35th career interception for the former All-Pro defender. Smith, who is 35 years old in his 13th season, extended his lead as the NFL’s active interception leader. “In 2022, first game he ended up getting a pick against the Packers, and he ended up with five picks that year,” safety Camryn Bynum said. “After the game, I told him it’s going to be that type of year.”
  • Giants linebacker Carter Coughlin , the former Eden Prairie and Gophers product, exited the game in the first half due to a pectoral injury. Giants punt returner Gunner Olszewski , from Bemidji State, did not play after aggravating a groin injury during warmups.

Paul Allen's response to Mike Zimmer drama: 'I'm out here catching strays'

Joe nelson | 3 hours ago.

  • Minnesota Vikings

It didn't get much attention when it happened, but Minnesota Vikings announcer Paul Allen did have a response to Mike Zimmer's scathing remarks in a recent newspaper interview.

Zimmer admitted he holds grudges and has one against Allen after the KFAN host made a comment about him snapping back at Kirk Cousins when the former Vikings head coach and quarterback infamously clashed during a win over the Lions in October 2021. Allen's precise words during a radio segment on his KFAN show from Sept. 6, 2022, went as follows:

"Yeah, Zim snapped when Cousins pushed him," Allen said. "And looking back at it, the former head coach got that side-eye and rage steaming from his nostrils. And he wanted to go. But then he didn’t want to go. Kirk sensed a free shot during the working relationship and he got one in."

In the wide-eyed interviewed with the Star Tribune , Zimmer addressed his relationship with Allen, which went from being friendly enough to co-own a racehorse together — Allen is the longtime track announcer at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minn. — to Zimmer buying out Allen's share of the horse and holding a grudge.

“Hey, I pushed Kirk back pretty hard, too,” Zimmer said. “But I just didn’t like what PA said. We’re supposed to be friends. Why you got to talk about me? Unfortunately, I hold grudges. That’s just how I am.”

The issue came up briefly when Allen was chatting with Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio on his 9-to-Noon KFAN show on Sept. 4.

"How about that stray I caught over the weekend from Mike Zimmer in the Star Tribune story?" Allen said. "I was trying to get through a holiday weekend, call some races and I'm out here catching strays out of nowhere."

Florio thought Zimmer's airing of dirty laundry in the public was out of line.

"How dare you tell the truth when Mike Zimer snapped during that weird shoving match with Kirk Cousins after the win over the Lions. How dare you say what your eyes were telling your brain? How dare you," Florio, with plenty of sarcasm, responded. "I thought you were his friend, I thought you would lie for a friend, create a false impression, I thought that you would come up with something better than the truth.

"Here's the truth: Zimmer didn't do himself any favors saying the stuff he said. It'd be better to just shut your mouth, go to work, do well and stick it to people that way. When you try to settle scores publicly like that, people aren't going to feel bad for, people aren't going to be rooting for you. If anything, they're going to be rooting for you to fail."

🗣️ READ IT LIKE A BOOK 📻: @PAOnTheMic | @KFAN1003 pic.twitter.com/iyldWQebcG — Minnesota Vikings (@Vikings) September 10, 2024

While Zimmer doesn't seem to enjoy Allen's company any longer, there's a very large group of people who adore the Vikings play-by-play guy. One of them is Gregg Rosenthal, who on his No. 1-rated NFL podcast, NFL Daily, commented about the horse situation Monday after playing a touchdown highlight featuring Allen.

"That's Paul Allen of KFAN," Rosenthal said after the highlight. "The great Paul Allen, who once owned a horse with Mike Zimmer, we found out last week. And Mike Zimmer's feelings were so hurt when Paul Allen dared to mention that he pushed Kirk Cousins that Mike Zimmer then made Paul Allen sell his share of the horse. He kept the horse. What a story, and they haven't spoken since. I mean, why hold so many grudges, Mike Zimmer? Who doesn't love Paul Allen?"

The Vikings used to play in the Metrodome from 1982 until its closure in 2013 when construction began for the new stadium. During construction the Vikings played the 2014 and 2015 seasons at the open-air Huntington Bank Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

You can also book a parking spot ahead of time to lessen the stress of trying to find a spot before the game or other event starts.

We suggest arriving early because parking for tailgating is limited. Tailgating is also only allowed in authorized parking lots and ramps and is for Vikings games only. If there is another event at the stadium, you will need to be authorized by the parking lot operator before tailgating.

The Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theater

The world-renowned Mariinsky Theatre, known during Soviet times as the Kirov Opera and Ballet Theatre, reverted to its original name in 1992. The present building, which dates back to 1859, originally housed another theater but was remodeled and taken over by the Mariinsky company. During pre-revolutionary times the theater enjoyed royal patronage and has played host to some of Russia's most celebrated classical performers; Fiodor Shaliapin sang there, and the dancers Vatslav Nizhinsky, Matilda Kshesinskaya, Anna Pavlova also graced its stage.

The building and its marvelous 1,625-seat auditorium were severely damaged during the 900-day Siege of Leningrad , but later restored in 1944. Since then the theater has maintained its excellent reputation, particularly for classical ballet. The theater rose to the dizzying heights of international success under the leadership of the conductor Yuri Temirkanov and the current Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Valery Gergiev. The theater's Ballet Department also flourished under the famous Leonid Yakobson and has enjoyed performances by the world-renown Rudolf Nureev.
