If your fingerprints have not been recorded, personal appearance when applying for a Schengen visa is mandatory. You will need to schedule an appointment with the representation competent for your place of residence . Making an appointment is free of charge.

If your fingerprints were collected within the last 59 months for a previously issued Schengen visa, you will not have to register them again in person. If you need to visit a family member in the Netherlands urgently, a family member in the Netherlands can apply for an emergency visa for you. Emergency visas are short-stay visas but they are not Schengen visas. Your visa only allows you travel to the Netherlands and visit the Netherlands.

Travelling to the EU and Schengen area

You do not need a visa for short trips to the EU or countries in the Schengen area if both of the following apply:

• you’re staying for 90 days or less in a 180-day period
• you’re visiting as a tourist or for certain other reasons

Other reasons include:

• studying a short course
• getting medical treatment
• travelling for business for your UK employer, for example to attend a business meeting or conference
• journalism or other media activities

Check the entry requirements of the country you’re visiting to find out what you can and cannot do during your stay.

These rules do not apply to travelling and working in Ireland .

Travelling to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in a 180-day period

You can travel to more than one country in a 180-day period. How long you can stay in each country depends on whether or not it’s in the Schengen area.

The countries in the Schengen area are:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Your total stay in the Schengen area must be no more than 90 days in every 180 days. It does not matter how many countries you visit. The 180-day period keeps ‘rolling’.

To work out if your stay is within the 90 day limit, use the following steps.

Check the date you plan to leave the Schengen area on your next trip.

Count back 180 days from that date to get the start of the 180-day period.

Add up the number of days you have already spent in the Schengen area in that 180-day period (you can use the dates stamped in your passport showing when you entered and left a country).

Work out how many days you will spend in the Schengen area on your next trip. Add this number to the number of days you worked out in step 3.

Check that the total number of days is not more than 90.

Travelling to Cyprus

Cyprus is not in the Schengen area. You can stay up to 90 days in a 180-day period in Cyprus without a visa.

Any time you spend in the Schengen area does not affect the number of days you can spend in Cyprus.

If you’re travelling for work, check the rules for the country you’re visiting .

If you’re travelling for another reason or staying longer than 90 days, check the entry requirements for the country you’re visiting .

Passports, birth- and marriage certificates can be picked up between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm without a scheduled appointment.

Appointments at the Embassy in Ottawa (only for passport renewals, no other consular services)

Applicants from the Greater Ottawa Region (National Capital Region of Ottawa and the surrounding counties (administrative units) of Lanark; Leeds and Grenville; Prescott and Russell; Renfrew; Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry) will now have the opportunity to apply for passport renewals at the embassy in Ottawa.

An Indian investor based in London recently had to miss an international flight despite waiting for months and spending more than Rs 4 lakh waiting for a Schengen business visa to visit Denmark.

Aashima Arora, a venture capitalist and partner at LocalGlobe who grew up in Delhi, shared pictures of the hundreds of pages of documents she has ready for her visa appointment and wished that the authorities would realise that she wants the visa to travel for work and not to settle down in any of the other European countries illegally.

"Europe, I promise I don’t want to marry your men or leave London to illegally stay in your cities. Also promise to spend more than $250 a day. Please just grant me a TOURIST visa!" the 28-year-old, who was featured in Forbes 30 under 30 Europe Finance list, wrote on X.

Speaking to Moneycontrol , Arora said that although she has faced delays in the visa process earlier, this time, it cost her a flight and more than Rs 4 lakh in payment to agents to get a quicker visa appointment date .

"I am looking to invest up to $10 million in a (gaming) company based out of Copenhagen. I have known the founder for years, and he sent me a formal invitation letter, filled out all the forms correctly on time (so that I get the visa on time)," Arora said.

She added that she tried communicating with the Danish embassy for a business visa and after an interview, the authorities apparently assured her that her Schengen visa would be ready within a week, but it has been more than two weeks since then and there has been no further response from the embassy.

"I'm doing like a walk-in thing with the Danish embassy because they allow walk-in appointments for business visas which is great (because) you don't have to wait months for it, but after submitting the documents, now I found out that their processing time is up to 90 days," Arora told the publication.

The wait time for Schengen visas is particularly high for Indian travellers intending to visit popular destinations such as France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. According to Arora, the current waiting time is especially excruciating because it would mean that she would be unable to use her passport until she gets the visa.

"When they give an appointment, I have to make sure that I am not travelling anywhere else on my passport. So basically, if I have to go to the US or India or anywhere outside the UK, I can't plan my life because Schengen appointments are so delayed," Arora said.

Schengen visa interview slots elusive this summer as demand shoots up

N EW DELHI: Schengen countries saw the third highest demand for visas in India last year in absolute terms at 9.7 lakh applications, 44% more than 6.7 lakh in 2022. In percentage terms among the top five countries, India saw the second highest increase in applications after China, followed by Morocco and Turkey, according to the European Commission. In spite of the surge, unavailability of visa interview slots tripped many Indians' travel plans.

Russia and China have had a story of fluctuating fortunes. While China, which started opening its borders for international travel only last year and had huge pent-up demand, leapt to the top of table from rank 22 in 2022. It saw the highest increase at 1,104% - over 10 times - in 2023 over the 2022 application numbers. (See box).

Russia, on the other hand, slipped from rank 2 in 2022 to rank 5 in 2023 mainly due to the war on Ukraine, and the ensuing sanctions. Russians' Schengen visa applications fell 25% in this two-year span.

For India, travel veterans believe the actual demand is even higher than official figures. But the unavailability of visa interview slots meant many Indians who wanted to travel could not even get a chance to apply for Schengen visas. "Appointments are simply not available with a majority of Schengen countries. If you want to travel to Europe this summer, the earliest appointment date for Germany and Italy is in July. This is making life very difficult for travellers. Rules require people to apply to the consulate of the country which will be their primary destination in Europe. But people are forced to opt for any country that has an appointment available for a visa in time," said Anil Kalsi, VP, Travel Agents Federation of India.

Many agents have vented their ire at VFSon multiple countsmany times, including that the agency handles far too many nations. Applying for a Schengen visa requires prior flight and hotel bookings, and not getting a visa in time means bearing huge cancellation charges.

In response to the complaints, a VFS Global spokesperson said: "Visa decision timelines are entirely at the discretion of the respective embassies/consulates... We urge travellers to plan travel early to avoid last-minute surprises. Most countries accept visa applications up to 90 days (3 months) before date of travel." According to the revised Schengen Visa Code, effective Feb 2, 2020, you can apply for a Schengen visa up to 6 months before your date of travel." Another bugbear is the EU policy of issuing very short term visas till recently to frequent visitors, something that was changed a few days back.

This means frequent travelers have had to apply time and again till recently.

An Indian investor residing in London ended up missing an international flight recently, even though she had been awaiting a Schengen visa to visit Denmark for months and had paid over Rs 4 lakh for it. Venture capitalist Aashima Arora, a partner at LocalGlobe who grew up in Delhi, posted pictures of the hundreds of pages of paperwork she had ready for her visa appointment. She expressed her hope that the authorities would recognise that her purpose for obtaining the visa was to travel for work-related reasons and not to illegally settle in any other European country.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Aashima Arora wrote, “Europe, I promise I don’t want to marry your men or leave London to illegally stay in your cities. Also, promise to spend more than $250 a day. Please just grant me a TOURIST visa!”

The 28-year-old, who was listed in Forbes’ 30 under 30 Europe Finance list, continued by saying that she needs to fill out documents from both India and the UK because she has an Indian passport and a UK biometric resident card.

She also made arrangements for the necessary approvals and documentation in addition to the customary papers relating to tourists, as this was a work-related trip.

Aashima Arora told Moneycontrol that while she had previously experienced delays in the visa application process, this time she had to pay agents over Rs 4 lakh in addition to the expense of a ticket so as to get a speedier visa appointment date.

She stated that she is hoping to put up to $10 million into a Copenhagen-based (gaming) startup. She continued, saying that she had known the founder for years and that he had sent her an official invitation letter.

Aashima ensured timely and accurate completion of all necessary paperwork to obtain her visa. She mentioned attempting to reach out to the Danish embassy to secure a business visa.

Following an interview, the officials reportedly gave her the assurance that her Schengen visa would be ready in a week, but more than two weeks have passed and she has not heard back from the embassy.

Additionally, she talked about how she made a walk-in meeting with the Danish embassy, which eliminates the need to wait months for business visas.

However, she discovered that their processing time might take up to 90 days after submitting the documentation.
