SEGWAY TOURS STAVANGER - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go
Top 9 things to do in Stavanger
Stavanger is known for street art, food, culture and proximity to mesmerising nature attractions such as Preikestolen, the Lysefjord, Kjerag, Dalsnuten, Flørli, Flor & Fjære as well as a myriad of islands near Stavanger.
The food city of Stavanger
Can you believe it? Five MICHELIN Stars in Stavanger! Restaurants and ingredients in this part of Norway receive the best reviews from both national food critics as well as from the MICHELIN Guide Nordics, where Stavanger became the first Norwegian city outside the capital to receive a MICHELIN star in 2016. It was the restaurant RE-NAA that could boast this magic star, and the following year another star followed - awarded to the much talked about Sabi Omakase. Both restaurants retained their stars in 2018 and 2019. RE-NAA then reached new heights with the second star in 2020 and retained them both since. The food adventure doesn't stop there though - in 2024, Renaa received three stars!
Sabi Omakase has since retained its star. The restaurants K2 and Hermetikken also have one star each. Stavanger now has a total of five stars. Restaurants Tango, Bellies, Sabi Enso, Söl, and Bravo also have mentions from MICHELIN (the plate/service level comfortable). Book well in advance if you want to challenge your taste buds at these restaurants. Fortunately, there is also a rich selection of first-class restaurants throughout the region.

In Stavanger, you will find street art on almost every street corner, and the city has become one of the world-leading cities in street art. The former Nuart festival has put Stavanger and the region on the street art map. As a visitor, you get a magnificent, visual experience that you will not forget any time soon, with great works (by Fintan Magee, Snik, Milu Correch, AFK, Skurk and Martin Whatson, among others) on outdoor walls, mainly in Stavanger and Sandnes.
For those of you who are interested in art, Stavanger also has its own art museum where you can experience the country's largest and most important collection of Lars Hertervig's works of art. Another important part of the permanent collection of the art museum is Frida Hansen's tapestries. Frida Hansen was one of Norway's foremost textile artists with a significant international career.

1. Old Stavanger - The old part of the city is one of the places you simply must visit when you are in Stavanger. The area also called Straen consists of 173 wooden houses idyllically located close to the harbour in Stavanger. Most of the houses are painted in white, they are small and charmingly crooked. A neighbourhood that takes pride in the fact that gardens and outdoor areas look the part. From spring to summer, it blooms in every flowerpot, and a stroll along the cobbled pedestrian street Øvre Strandgate is a great experience. Herring fishermen and factory workers lived here with their families during the herring's heyday in Stavanger. In a former canning factory, you will find IDDIS Norwegian Graphic Museum & Norwegian Canning Museum, a museum where you experience exhibitions about Stavanger's important canning industry, and about the people who made it big.
Cultural heritage in the city
Old stavanger, iddis the norwegian printing museum and the norwegian canning museum.
2. Fargegaten is one of the streets in Stavanger you have most likely already seen pictures of on various social media. It's an Instagram favourite for many. The street was previously a somewhat forgotten part of the city that had its renaissance after initiators had the idea to paint the houses in vibrant colours.
Visit the colourful street

3. The Norwegian Petroleum Museum is one of the most popular museums in Stavanger. The building itself makes it worth a visit. Hard to miss along the harbour promenade, as it is shaped like an oil platform. The museum itself tells the important story of how oil was found and how it is extracted.

4. Stavanger Cathedral is the only Norwegian cathedral from the Middle Ages that has retained its original architecture, and the only one that has been in continuous use since the 14th century. According to tradition, the church was built in 1125, when Sigurd Jorsalfarer made Stavanger the diocese. The cathedral is currently being restored and will reopen the 25 August 2024.
5. At Hafrsfjord, just outside Stavanger, is the monument Sword in rock . The story goes that it was in the nearby area that Harald Hårfagre gathered Norway into a kingdom in 872. The monument is in memory of the battle and consists of three swords set down in the ground, which stand for peace, unity, and freedom. The heroes of the Viking worlds are taken from swords found in different parts of the country. The monument was made by Fritz Røed (1928-2002) and was unveiled by King Olav in 1983.
6. Shopping in Stavanger. Enjoy some quality shopping with a variety of shops and charming shopping streets. The pedestrian streets have cafes and restaurants that offer a breather between shopping and other errands. Top shopping recommendations are Chili Chocolate for anyone with a sweet tooth, Oleana for lovers of award-winning designs or Fjällräven and Helly Hansen if you are in need of hiking and outdoor clothing.

7. Fjord cruise from Stavanger is possible all year round, whether you choose an electric catamaran from Rødne Fjord Cruise or a fast-paced RIB boat Fjord Events eller Stavanger RIB. You can also experience the fjord and islands in VIP style on board one of the luxury yachts of Private Cruise or Lysetur AS. Norled also offers fjord cruises in the summer. In the summer, you should also visit the incredible, tropical garden, Flor & Fjære, an unparalleled paradise you would not think is just outside Stavanger. A visit here could be mistaken for a visit to warmer regions, perhaps on some Mediterranean island. Exotic and colourful!
See the fjords!
Fjord cruise to the lysefjord and preikestolen from stavanger, lysefjord safari classic with fjordevents, cruise to the lysefjord and preikestolen from private yacht.
8. Segway tour A different way to see what Stavanger has to offer is on a Segway trip! A nice way to see all the attractions in an efficient and fun way. Segway tours can be booked at Guidecompaniet. If, on the other hand, you prefer to have your feet planted well in the ground, you can book a guided walk in Stavanger.

9. Viking House is a world-class visitor centre that conveys the history of the Viking Age in the region through VR technology. Embark on the Viking ship and join an adventure. Travel back in time and experience the VR film "The First King". It tells the story of the sagas on Harald Hårfagre and the battle of Hafrsfjord in 872, where Hårfagre united Norway into one kingdom. You get to experience Norway's exciting history and cultural heritage like you have never seen before.

- David E 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing tour, beautiful scenery, really helpful and knowledgeable Guide My wife and I did the Akrafjorden & Langfoss tour with Guide Companiet as part of a cruise ship visit...it was organised through the cruise company (P&O) but operated by Guide Companiet - Our guide was Melissa who was excellent. The tour started at the port in Haugesund and it took two hours to reach our first stop, which was a lunch stop, which we did first to ensure we avoided crowded stops at the other attractions on the tour. Lunch was hosted at the Rullestad Camping by the pretty lake there, although the food (a delicious buffet of local cold and hot food, including salmon marinated in cognac and brown cheese on pancakes) was catered mainly by the Eljarvik Gard farm. Following lunch we were taken to Fjæra where we boarded a boat to take us on a cruise on the Åkrafjorden. We were lucky with the weather and we enjoyed a gorgeous hour trip on the fjord, getting up close to the base of the Langfoss waterfall. Melissa provided the commentary on the boat, and the crew of the boat collected fresh water from the waterfall for the passengers to sample. It was a wonderful trip. Following the fjord boat trip we had a short photo stop at Eljarvik Gard farm and then headed to the parking area at the base of Langfoss for some photos and a toilet stop. We then had the two hour trip back to the port, although before heading back to our ship we had a short stop at the Norwegian National Monument. The full trip was around 7 hours in total and we really enjoyed it. We were so lucky with the weather, which helped of course, but this tour was well worth the money, and Melissa was a fantastic guide. Highly recommended. Read more Written 16 July 2023

- JFSTVG 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles 10/10! Booked a guided tour to celebrate my grandmothers 81st birthday. The booking process was perfect, and Kjersti always picked up the phone when we had any questions. Janne, our guide, made this a memorable time. She also brought my grandmother a present, which she absolutely loved. Thank you! This was way way better than any of us could imagine. I would highly recommend this for anyone visiting Stavanger, but it’s also highly recommended for locals. It was pretty amazing to hear all of these stories from our own home town from an super enthusiastic guide! Read more Written 10 August 2022
- Anita_Eyvind 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Stavanger's dark side walk & tour great fun We live in Stavanger, but haven't taken a guided tour around the city and thought it would be fun. It was Halloween weekend coming up, so we four 2 parents with one adult daughter + her friend, thought to try the Dark Side (seasonal) tour. Our guide was excellent, with all kinds of information about Stavanger's dark past (it wasn't that scary). We walked around the city center, getting information at prespecified locations and the guide company had set up people in costumes acting out little skits from the period. All involved were courteous and professional. It was drizzly (yr), so think about proper clothing. It is an entertaining way to learn about the city and we will likely join a regular tour in future. - _chevy_jo 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Gladmat food trail tour My second time at the food tour, this time in English. As last year, this always sells out so would recommend getting tickets early. The best parts are the unique meals the different places sometimes serve as well as the ability to buy small measures of wines. The standout last year was dessert at Bellies and this year was the fish course at NB Sorenson, otherwise it is true that it is more expensive than just visiting 5 restaurants and having your favourite items from the menu. The guide was pleasant and enthusiastic and adds a bit of historical and factual context. Overall, I would recommend as a fun activity out. Read more Written 7 July 2021
- KarenGiacaman 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Gladmatløyper - Not worth it. Better to go to the free event and spent the same money on better food! It was a little interesting to know more about the city that we are living in by the food. The guide was nice. The only issue is that she speaks very low, so it was terrible trying to listen to her. On the other hand... The food... It was not that good for the price (especially the hamburger.. Netter places by far here in Stavanger!). Also, I have food allergies and I was so happy that this was taken care of when I pay for this experience and I wrote my information. The only issue is that this was not taken care of in the real-life... I have dairy (milk, butter, cream, etc) and soy allergies, but when I came to the restaurants they only focused on Lactose-free (not the same!)... So, of course, I spent almost all the trip in the toilet (I talked with the guide and she told me that she will give the feedback to the locals, but nothing else). Read more Written 4 July 2021
- torsteinw76 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Gladmatløype 2 Wanderful walk around Stavanger. Good food and friendly and welcoming events at 5 different restaurants (Bar Negroni, Gaffel & Karaffel, Foodloose, Bølgen og Moi, Eg & Du in Østervåg). The restaurant Foodloose was a bit chaotic and unprepared, but the food as such was very nice. Enthusiastic and pleasant guide. Read more Written 3 July 2021

- Leigvold 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Gladmatløypa vest Everything was perfect until Lervig Local. Unfriendly staff, bad organization and the food was bad. The other places we will attend again, but not Lervig Local. You should have chosen Matmagasinet instead. The guide was pleasent but a bit to much. Overall a good experience and we will do it again. - Ann P 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Local tourist when travelling far is not an option Local tourist! We were 3 couples from the Stavanger area who were tourists in Stavanger Saturday 13.11 by having a guided walk with Bent from Guidecompaniet. This was absolutely fantastic!! We learnt new things about the history of Stavanger, we got to be on the top floor of Valbertårnet, we had a VR experience in Viking house, good food & drinks at Sting and Bøker & Børst. Bent was the best possible guide and also tempted us with other tours they offer. We will come back for more!!! Since we are not able to travel far these times, there is a lot of things to do and explore in own backyard! We highly recommend it! Read more Written 16 November 2020

- Tor E 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great Gladmat festival/Vegan food walk trip , we visited 5 restaurants in Stavanger. We walked to restaurants, also guide told history off the city and meaning of street-names in between the visits. The food: 1 excellent - 2 Great- 1 okay- 1 crap , some places had done some effort on the food and story with it, sadly I have to say that restaurant chains have nothing to offer in this kind of trips, should be removed since they not offer anything special to the table . 5 restaurants should also be cut done to 4, don't like to stress when time schedules failed, so maybe 4 should be enough? But guess if this get regular trips it will get better, and 5 tastes are better than 4 :-) But overall would I/we do this again? YES we would! Read more Written 31 July 2020
