Netflix says goodbye to Star Trek for good with the loss of Deep Space Nine

Star Trek Deep Space Nine is leaving Netflix in July — here’s how to watch it afterwards

Star Trek fans out there might want to give Netflix the boot once July rolls around. Paramount Plus has slowly been reclaiming the rights to various Trek shows since 2019, and now it’s managed to grab the very last one: Deep Space Nine.

Deep Space Nine first hit Netflix back in 2011, when Netflix acquired the rights to all five live-action Star Trek shows that existed at the time. But that era is now coming to an end, and the last day U.S. viewers will be able to watch Deep Space Nine on Netflix is June 30.

Deep Space Nine was something of a departure for the Star Trek franchise. The show was controversial at the time, given its focus on a much bleaker version of the future than had been seen in previous series. It also opted for a more serialized approach to its storytelling, which was almost unheard of in the days before streaming and catch-up services.

Still Deep Space Nine was received well enough to run for a full seven seasons, and has picked up a dedicated following in the 20+ years since it went off the air.

The news that the show is leaving Netflix was no major surprise. Star Trek is one of Paramount’s tentpole franchises, which is reflected in the fact we now have five ongoing Star Trek shows: Discovery , Picard , Lower Decks , Prodigy and the newly-minted Strange New Worlds .

It’s understandable that the network would want to bring all of Star Trek into the fold, but that doesn’t mean it stings any less.

The great Star Trek reclamation began in October 2019, when Star Trek: The Animated Series made the voyage home. October 2021 saw The Original Series and Voyager make the same journey, followed by The Next Generation in April 2022.

Following the departure of Deep Space Nine, the only piece of Star Trek canon that Paramount doesn’t have is the 2009 reboot — as directed by JJ Abrams. It’s not entirely clear who has the rights to that, but it certainly isn’t Netflix.

Currently international streaming rights are unaffected, and Netflix still holds the rights to classic Star Trek outside North America. The only exception is The Animated Series. However, with international launch of Paramount Plus scheduled for the U.K. and Europe, it’s likely that history will eventually repeat itself overseas.

3 Star Trek Series Leaving Netflix In September, Signals Possible Move To Consolidate Franchise On Paramount+

The library of Star Trek television series has been readily available on all the major streaming services in the USA for years, but it looks like those days may be coming to an end.

Netflix says goodbye to TOS, Voyager , and Enterprise

On Wednesday, Netflix announced all the shows coming and going from the service in September and three Star Trek shows were included, all of which will be leaving at the end of the month. Exiting Netflix are all three seasons of Star Trek: The Original Series , all seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager , and all four seasons of  Star Trek: Enterprise . So far, there is no word on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .

Netflix was the first streaming service to license the Star Trek television catalog, having cut a deal in early 2011 . Four of the five Star Trek shows started streaming in July 2011 , with DS9 joining in October. Licensing deals for all five series were struck with Hulu and the Amazon Prime Video service in subsequent years. Star Trek: The Animated Series was available on Netflix and other services for a few years, but is currently only available on Paramount+.

Star Trek has been popular on Netflix, with Voyager being the most rewatched according to a Netflix release in 2017 . And of course Netflix partnered with CBS to create Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, with Netflix distributing it outside the USA and Canada.

Starting with its 2014 launch, all of the Star Trek shows were available for streaming on CBS All Access, which was relaunched by ViacomCBS as Paramount+ earlier this year. Paramount Plus is the exclusive home in the USA to three original Star Trek series ( Discovery , Picard , and Lower Decks ), with two more arriving over the next year (the animated kids series Prodigy and the live-action Strange New Worlds ).

Star Trek coming home to Paramount Plus?

Unlike feature films which have short licensing windows and move around, as we saw recently with a number of the Star Trek feature films , television licensing deals tend to be long term. The Star Trek shows have been on Netflix consistently for ten years. The same is true for Hulu and Amazon Prime since joining those streaming services. In theory, Netflix and ViacomCBS could renegotiate a license, however, industry trends indicate this is could be the beginning of the end for Star Trek shows being sold to other streaming services. If that is the case, DS9 and TNG will eventually leave Netflix when deals for those shows expire, and all five shows will drop out of Hulu and Amazon as well; as of now, there are no details on if or when this will happen.

Assuming this is the plan, it would leave Paramount Plus as the exclusive streamer for the Star Trek television library in the USA. This type of pulling back of licensed properties has been a trend in the industry: Warner Media did it with Friends on HBO Max and NBC Universal did the same with The Office and Parks and Recreation on Peacock. ViacomCBS is also doing this with other shows. For example, Evil is also exiting Netflix in September. In June that series moved from the CBS Broadcast Network to become a Paramount Plus original series with a brand new season.

While not explicitly calling out Star Trek, ViacomCBS has made it clear they are pivoting away from their previous policy of aggressively licensing their content. Earlier this month when speaking about the latest quarterly results, CEO Bob Bakish noted that licensing revenue had fallen due in part to “ongoing efforts to limit licensing to third-party streaming services.”

As of now, there is no indication that ViacomCBS is pulling back on licensing Star Trek internationally, where all the series are still available on Netflix and other streaming services. ViacomCBS has also partnered with Netflix and Amazon to stream some of their new Star Trek shows internationally. However, in the long term, as Paramount Plus expands globally, the Star Trek franchise may eventually follow the same pattern seen in the USA.

That’s kind of annoying. I still usually use Netflix to watch Trek. I guess now I’ll have to use either Paramount +, Hulu, or Prime.

This news is NOT a bad thing!

The bad thing is paying Paramount+ and not having the whole Star Trek collection. Waiting to have all the movies and series in ONE place. :P

I have that. It’s called my bookshelf. :P

(I say this knowing some smartass will snag me on Lower Decks Season 2, Discovery Season 4, Picard Season 2 and Strange New Worlds Season 1)

Someone, I think here, sniped me for saying I like to have the option of streaming something I physically own when I’m away from home. But it’s true – I would happily visit a friend and watch a Star Trek movie with them one night. But I don’t want to suddenly have to subscribe to Showtime to do that.

True. Waiting for that moment. My issue is buying the latest digital format when (soon) will become obsolete. Eventually will begin to order the entire collection.

Same here. When all else fails you can always count on physical media.

Owning the physical media is still the best way to go.

I’m not the biggest Netflix fan, but they have the best interface, by far. It’s perfectly designed and intuitive. Paramount+ just slapped a new name on the ancient CBS All Access architecture. It’s a total mess, by far the worst streaming interface of them all. They only just added a friggin playlist feature! Even the selection of avatars is pathetic.

It’s not surprising that Trek is being used like this, it’s pattern behavior. But it would be nice if some effort was put into making P+ a halfway decent streamer.

Another negative about Paramount+ (and Peacock) is that it forgets what you have watched. I watched Lower Decks season 1 but if you looked now, it shows I haven’t watched any of the episodes. Netflix, HBO Max, Prime, Hulu, and Disney+ will remember what you have watched if you stop watching a series but return to it months later.

This will probably reduce further the number of people into Trek and turn fans like us only into a checkbook. Voyager’s late popularity AFIK is all Netflix based.

On the other hand… now… the fans…. Are in control!! Bwahahahaha!

While I do subscribe to Paramount plus to get the new shows, I’m doubly glad that I have my beloved TOS on BluRay.

Same here (and TAS, TNG , the first ten movies, the first season of Lower Decks , and the recent DS9 doc; I still need to get DS9 itself and Voyager on DVD and Enterprise on Blu-ray). Streaming is fantastically convenient, but physical media is still kind of a must for the “core” stuff one really cares about.

Why not just rip your whole Trek collection and stream it anywhere with Plex?

What is this “anywhere” of which you speak? :p

It’s a bit cumbersome, but you can download a Plex app to almost every smart TV and log in to your media server pc with Plex on it, and you can stream everywhere, in an emergency Trek withdrawal you can even stream to a mobile phone ;)

I figured, but I was more joking about “anywhere”, since I don’t really go places now the way I used to in The Before Times, way back in ancient 2019.

A lot of newer fans dropped in from Netflix in the last decade, they’d be wise to keep licensing. . I remember when the 2009 movie came out, more people than I had ever known were getting into it because of their availability.

I’m thinking that ViacomCBS will use Pluto to build the audience by offering the classic five live-action series and TAS for free with its advertising based streamer.

Pluto is doing very well in Latin America and the European countries where it launched.

As based video seems a natural successor to the years of syndicated Trek reruns many of us grew up with.

Still, it’s a double-edged sword to have to put up with ads vs. just continue using the most popular streaming service. I totally get the point of hoarding IP, feeding content to competitors is largely only good for short term gains at the expense of controlling distribution, and ViacomCBS doesn’t just have Paramount+ and Pluto to think about, it has its broadcast business which Netflix openly declared war on when it started producing original programming.

But I for one, if presented with the choice of Pluto or Netflix to get certain programming (especially a movie), would choose the latter every time, despite the price. I’m lucky to have that disposable income, but we have been lucky that CBS licensed Trek out so liberally a decade ago.

I don’t really want to shell out for Paramount+, until they have reliable new Trek content. Since I don’t own Enterprise or Voyager in a hard copy format, this is disappointing. So long as it’s still available on Amazon Prime though, I guess I’m okay. Those days seem numbered too though.

This happens as the streaming license is near its end. Plenty of time for Netflix and Paramount to renew the license. I really doubt very old episodes of ST is going to get more people subscribing to Paramount +.

Does Paramount+ have TOS with the original effects?

They should have both if they’re going to be the home of STAR TREK. Right now I think Amazon Prime has both (the original and remastered).

For quite awhile, Amazon was also the only place to get uncut Voyager season 5, everyone else had the US cuts which deleted scenes after delivery when UPN added more commercials mid-season.

It’s funny, I’ve had Amazon Prime for several years but I barely watch anything on it. Perhaps I should start!

Whoa! Well… there we go. I think many of us had long wondered whether they’d continue to license the old stuff to other services indefinitely (non-exclusively, of course). Now we know.

Honestly, I can see benefits to either offering (non-exclusive) licenses for the older shows and movies to alternate services like Netflix, or bringing everything in-house to be exclusive to Paramount+; both paths can be part of viable strategies. Obviously, pulling everything back home makes P+ that much more of a vital, must-have service for fans of this franchise (the same way Disney+ is for fans of Marvel or Star Wars , say). OTOH, I could see having non-exclusive licenses for Trek being not only a great way to make more money from a variety of sources on the back catalogue, but also helping ensure the longevity of the franchise by making it easier for newcomers to the franchise to discover it and get hooked. Presumably Viacom has data indicating which is likelier to be more lucrative in the long-term.

Like others, though, I’m personally a bit disappointed. I have P+ for the new stuff, of course, but for streaming the older shows, I tend to prefer Netflix, simply because the interface is more comfortable, or even putting in physical discs like your great-great-great-great-grandfather used to. I guess eventually I’ll watch everything on P+, but man, Star Trek just felt like such a mainstay on Netflix for so long. I’m going to miss having it there.

Internationally it makes sense for them to keep selling the rights to new trek at least to other streaming services. Its their most expensive streaming franchise and they need the biggest return on it.

Paramount+ launched in Australia this month and there is no way they would make the same money streaming it themselves as they do selling it to the bigger services. I imagine after a few years of growth the new and old series will return home, if Paramount+ manages to gain a customer bases here.

But right now its early days

Rats, I am gonna miss the convenience of Trek on Netflix, it’s by far the most user-friendly of the streamers, light years ahead of P+. What always bothered me, though, was the “thumbnail” and “preview” for TOS – while other shows have carefully-crafted promos to hook you in, TOS had a poorly-formatted and boring clip from The Cage. Also all the thumbnail images for the episodes are of people, often very boring shots, which to me doesn’t seem very intuitive, considering a sci-fi show like Star Trek is often identified for its sci-fi imagery. I’d rather see a Gorn, the Fesarius, the Tholian Web in the thumbnail than some generic conference room still of the crew. It really feels like the people at Netflix have no idea how to make Star Trek look appealing.

I hate that DS9’s thumbnail on P+ is the only one that doesn’t feature the captain.

Man, I have Netflix almost just for the Star Trek content.

I would have no problem with this if Paramount+ had a better user interface. At least their streaming capacity is better these days.

One of the reasons my physical DVDs and BluRay are not going anywhere. I have ripped all my discs to hard drive, so it’s pretty convenient to watch Trek (and my other faves) as and when without having them suddenly disappear off the streaming services I subscribe to. But nothing beats physical media when it comes to picture and sound quality, which is still far better than anything ripped or available on streaming.

Actually very happy that they are finally starting to go exclusive to Paramount Plus. This makes getting a subscription a no brainer now as a diehard Trekkie. It was hard to justify subscribing year round to basically just to watch one show (because no new Trek overlaps, and during Covid there’s been big gaps). It also has Twilight Zone and old Trek, but I also had Amazon for those, and I get so much more on Amazon.

If Paramount Plus eventually becomes the exclusive home for Trek (and likely TZ too at some point)– and they now add the Paramount movie catalog, and make more new originals, it becomes all the more easier justify the $10 a month on top of Amazon (the only service I currently have)– or even to cancel Amazon entirely.

I am considering Disney Plus too at some point, but probably not until next year, when Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms Marvel, and Secret Invasion have released. Right now i’m happy to drive to my father’s place and watch those shows with him (which has been a nice tradition during Covid).

I was planning to start watching all of Star Trek on Netflix this weekend, which will take several weeks to complete. I’m outside the US, I just hope I have time to watch it all before they remove it here too.

So many Streaming Sites to choose from and all have a cost. I’ve Netflix and Disney+ and I am happy with these two. They have everything I need. But when Paramount+ goes international I am considering adding it to my list.

I’m glad I dropped Netflix 4 years ago. First they dropped MASH, then they dropped Cheers and now Star Trek. Netflix isn’t worth it any longer.

I think that Netflix will be losing the DC shows soon as well. Well, I still like Netflix’s documentaries, the The Toys that Made Us and the Movies that Made Us.

To be fair, they aren’t dropping Star Trek, the license holder — Paramount in this case — is pulling the show from Netflix for their own platform.

Glad I still have my DVDs and Blurays of everything.

So I’ll go back to the downloaded copies. Paramount+ or whatever they’ll call it next is ridiculous garbage.

It’s not that disappointing because I have all the episodes of the first two series my favorites, which means now I will have to get the rest, which I had planned to do, anyhow!

Would be nice if we got some of the other TREK series streaming on PLUTO TV (owned by ViacomCBS) All we get is the THE NEXT GENERATION and it’s the same handful of episodes over-and-over!

Will this apply to Netflix UK (where we don’t have Paramount+)?

Not that big a deal. I have TOS discs and two seasons of Enterprise. Only DS9 would be a bit annoying as I am waiting (possibly forever) for DS9 on Blu ray. I don’t rely on streaming if it is something I want to see more than once.

I subscribed to Netflix 10 years ago, then I sold my Star Trek DVD collection. I may hold on to the subscription until they drop TNG and DS9, but I will definitely be unsubscribing from Netflix because of Star Trek.

"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" is unique as a "Star Trek" series, because it doesn't follow an intrepid crew as they explore the stars but instead sticks with a space station located next to a crucial wormhole that could change the power dynamics of the galaxy. The series followed Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) as he tries to maintain peace onboard a space station formerly controlled by the Cardassian Empire. The station is next to the newly liberated planet of Bajor, who had been under Cardassian rule for decades, and now a wormhole has opened up. That wormhole connects two distant parts of the galaxy, the Alpha Quadrant and the Gamma Quadrant, and it turns out there's a whole bunch of new baddies in the Gamma Quadrant looking to take over the entire universe. Despite this set-up, "Deep Space Nine" still managed to include many "Trek" favorites, including holosuite episodes, time travel, and even an encounter with the enigmatic Q (John de Lancie).

Though "Deep Space Nine" is sometimes derided as the "soap opera in space" series of "Star Trek," I'll argue that it's the greatest "Star Trek" series ever made . Whether you want to revisit Garak's and Quark's and the rest of the promenade for the dozenth time or this is your first taste of "Trek," here's a guide to everywhere you can stream "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."

Where to Stream Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

For fans who want to stream "Deep Space Nine," there are an impressive number of options. The entire series is streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Paramount+, and Hulu. That's right, you can find all seven seasons of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" on four of the major streaming services. However, these days you're able to stream all Star Trek content out there on Paramount Plus. What Star Trek Titles Are Streaming on Netflix?

Star Trek is a name that almost everyone recognizes, it has been around for decades and has inspired millions around the world. It’s had extensive coverage in all manner of media formats but one of the biggest has been its TV and movie presence. Since its inception, there have been 726 individual Star Trek episodes spread out across decades. We’ve also seen 13 feature-length movies too.

We are also lucky enough to welcome a new Netflix Original  Star Trek: Discovery. The first new Star Trek TV show in 16 years will be coming to UK Netflix on the 25th of September (with new episodes releasing every Monday). But for our viewers from the United States, the show will debut on September 2nd on CBS  and made available on their streaming service, CBS All Access.

The new show stars  The Walking Dead ‘s Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham, first officer of  The Discovery . The series is set 10 years before the original ventures of Kirk and Spock of the Enterprise.

The premise for the majority of the shows stays relatively similar. It takes place throughout the Universe onboard an intergalactic ship, For example, the Enterprise or the Voyager. Over the years we have been introduced to many crews, comprised of different actors and actresses. There is much debate on which adaptation of Star Trek is the best, but one thing is for sure. It has developed a cult following and even has a university degree dedicated to learning the language in the show.

As the Star Trek universe has expanded, it has become increasingly more difficult to keep track of all the content streaming on Netflix. But don’t worry, we’re here to cover every Star Trek title currently available, due to release in the future, and has sadly left our Netflix screens.

What we're watching: 'Deep Space 9,' 'Kingdom' and 'Solar Opposites'

‘Deep Space Nine’ embraced serialization before it was cool

But not completely..

I’ve been watching a lot of Star Trek lately, and, oddly enough, it’s not because I’ve been stuck inside for three months. I started the original series last fall after finishing Discovery , because (spoiler) Burnham’s big farewell to Spock got me thinking about the latter’s close relationship with Kirk. And then Star Trek: Picard spun up shortly after, which prompted me to rewatch all of The Next Generation and see how well Picard built on the plot lines and ideas from that show . At that point, I figured, “in for a penny, in for a pound,” so I started up Deep Space Nine , finishing all seven seasons of that last week. It’s been… interesting.

At the time it aired, Deep Space Nine got a lot of flack for not being like its predecessors; it was too dark in tone, everyone argued too much, it was boring because they didn’t travel around in a ship, it was a ripoff of Babylon 5 . All of these complaints seem rather quaint now, given the themes in both Discovery and Picard (and no one except maybe Dan Cooper really talks about Babylon 5 anymore). But one thing about the show that people continue to bring up — as a positive this time — is how it pioneered serialized storytelling on TV.

DS9 certainly wasn’t the first or only show at the time that ran plots over multiple episodes and seasons, but it was still rare in both syndicated and genre programming, and a first for Star Trek. At the time, I remember being delighted at how the show was rewarding my dedicated viewing. Now that’s par for the course with all kinds of television, from network to streaming. The fact that so many shows now follow a serialized model is why it’s almost impossible to start watching a series in the middle, with people putting aside time to binge entire shows from the very beginning.

With DS9 jumping on the serialized boat earlier than most of its contemporaries, you would think it would lend itself well to modern binge viewing, but over the few weeks I went through the seven seasons, I found this to be the opposite. The characterization and plot hooks were still as solid as I remember, but some of the storylines and pacing felt… thin. I remember Sisko and Kassidy Yates having this long, epic romance, but watching that season so quickly made me realize the relationship didn’t get a lot of screen time. The same goes for Rom and Leeta, who move from first date to marriage in a fairly short number of episodes. What I realized is that, while serialized, DS9 still depended on a weekly schedule for its pacing. Sisko and Kassidy’s relationship, or Leeta and Rom’s, felt long because they were each a handful of episodes stretched over months.

It really makes me think of the concept of “water cooler talk,” where people might discuss last night’s episode the next day at work. In high school, I looked forward to Tuesday mornings so I could talk about the new episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with my friends. You would discuss what happened and speculate about where the story was going next week. That gap between episodes left room for the story to grow, similar to how movement in comic books happens in the gutters between panels. Our minds would fill in the blanks.

Nowadays, there’s no room for that kind of thought anymore, since Netflix will queue up the next episode before you’ve even had time to process the one you just watched. And streaming shows are designed around that, too, sometimes padding themselves out with detail both to increase episode count (a huge problem in the streamer’s Marvel shows) but also because the audience had no time to do that mental lifting.

Even with its vaunted serialization, DS9 still took the time out to do standalone episodes, and many of those are considered not just the best of the show but the best in the franchise: ‘Duet,’ ‘The Visitor,’ ‘Far Beyond the Stars.’ They pack in all the information you need to get to the heart of each story neatly enough that, more than 20 years later, they’re still as enjoyable as when they first aired.

None of this is to say that I didn’t enjoy the rest of the show; I still shed a tear during that final shot of ‘What You Leave Behind’ as the camera zoomed away from the station. But I feel like I learned a lot about how format and your method of consumption can twist how you feel about a story.

Netflix’s ‘Kingdom’ opened a gateway to more subtitled shows

Keeping the number of episodes per season down has its benefits..

I have developed a pandemic habit. Well, several habits. But one of them is watching a (usually) foreign show every Friday with my friend Wendy from Singapore over Skype. It's a fun way to get me to watch things I would otherwise be too distracted to pay attention to. When we first started in March, Wendy suggested we kick things off with the Korean series Kingdom . I was still a little resistant to watching foreign-language shows because I wasn't into subtitle reading. And as much as I love zombie movies and TV series, I felt the genre was getting a little tired.

I just wasn't prepared for the ridiculous amount of love and appreciation I would develop for Kingdom . Set in Korea's Joseon period, the show follows the Crown Prince as he fights for his throne while a mysterious disease spreads across the country. It's odd to think about zombies in historical costumes, but somehow it works. Wendy and I devoured the first season in one sitting, before deciding we had to pace ourselves for season two. There are only six episodes per season, so that was quite the challenge, but the relatively small number of episodes keeps the show tight.

There are no superfluous subplots dragging the storytelling down. There's no need to insert unnecessary romantic tension that takes the viewer away from more interesting scenes. Kingdom is a show that has a story to tell, and by focusing on the drama, it's incredibly engaging. It also offers a unique and compelling reason for the zombie disease, as well as potential cures and limitations. A twist at the end of the first season also kept things fresh, presenting our heroes with challenges that don't feel forced.

Speaking of our heroes, I'll admit it: Kingdom resurrected a crush I developed in my youth for Ju Ji-hoon. He plays the Crown Prince in Kingdom and had the same role in a 2006 series called Princess Hours . Not only was it a delight to watch Ju's growth as an actor since that show, but I swooned over every clever decision he made as a strategist protecting his people against relentless zombies, rampant poverty, hapless politicians and devious usurpers. Thoughtful and brilliant world leaders? What a fantasy. (Ju is also a beautiful man, which is a nice bonus.)

Kingdom is a great ride, and it opened my eyes to the world of Korean entertainment. It was also a gateway into other foreign shows on Netflix, where the bar is often higher for non-English content. I've also come to appreciate six-episode seasons as it's highly likely that they're tighter and focus on plot and drama. Since finishing Kingdom , I've watched a slew of Korean shows, and Wendy and I checked out some foreign entries on Netflix like Freud , Bloodride and Into the Night . They've been hit or miss, with Freud being a convoluted mess.

I do want to briefly shout out Into The Night , which is Netflix's first Belgian original series. It's a masterful work and a supremely enjoyable ride, featuring a gripping story, multifaceted characters and deeply complex moral situations amid a mysterious deadly phenomenon killing the world.

I’m still not very likely to dive into foreign shows on my own, but my attitude to them has changed. Subtitles will no longer keep me from devouring the best work the world has to offer. As we quickly run out of things to watch, I'm glad we have a global variety of entertainment within our reach.

‘Solar Opposites’ is so much more than another ‘Rick and Morty’

Fresh from the mind of Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland, Hulu’s latest animated sitcom series,   Solar Opposites ,  is a turducken-ish tale of refugees struggling to adapt to their new adoptive homes.

The main story revolves around a family unit of sentient space plants from the planet Shlorp who arrive on Earth after an asteroid annihilates their world. After crash-landing in middle America, the Shlorpians — Korvo and Terry, plus their two replicants, Yumyulack and Jesse, as well as their infant genetic supercomputer, Pupa — must integrate themselves into society until they can repair the damage to their spacecraft. This, of course, invariably results in a series of hilarious misadventures: Korvo and Terry unleashing a von Neumann machine upon the town to gain popularity with their neighbors ahead of an HOA board election, Yumyulack and Jesse unwittingly achieving perfect attendance records during summer vacation or Korvo’s misguided attempt to build both a robotic mother for the replicants and a man cave for himself.

But that's only half of the story. Super-advanced aliens capable of traveling across the galactic quadrant aren’t particularly well-known for respecting the autonomy of Earth’s native inhabitants (looking at you,  Predator ). Jesse and Yumyulack are no different, the mischievous pair having developed an affinity for shrinking humans that displease them to Tom Thumb-size and unceremoniously dumping them into a wall-mounted terrarium. There, the unlucky humans must fend for themselves in a  Mad Max -meets- Escape from New York  apocalyptic wasteland with nothing to subsist upon but Jesse’s occasional donations of candy and whatever they were carrying at the time of shrinking. This story-in-a-story format is really clever as it allows the showrunners to seamlessly transition between the goofy, albeit ultraviolet adventures of the Shlorpians (just wait for the white power scene in episode 2) with a far darker drama unfolding within the terrarium walls.

Viewers will be able to tell from the opening scene that  Solar Opposites  is very much a Justin Roiland joint venture (co-created with Mike McMahan), from the generous dusting of pop culture references to the  R&M -esque squiggly pupils of their eyes. Roiland himself voices Korvo, while Thomas Middleditch portrays Terry. Sean Giambrone and Mary Mack voice Yumyulack and Jesse, respectively.

The entire first season is currently available on Hulu for your viewing pleasure. The art style and semi-improvisational humor are very much in line with what viewers have come to expect from  Rick and Morty . However, this show is in no way a spin-off of the popular Adult Swim series. For one thing, you won’t see fans of this show jumping on McDonald’s counters caterwauling about dipping sauce availability and that, in my opinion, is reason enough to give  Solar Opposites  a shot.

Star Trek: Discovery has finally revealed what a Breen looks like underneath all its armor, but Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Breen should have kept their helmets on. In Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors", written by Johanna Lee & Carlos Cisco, and directed by Jen McGowan , audiences learn more about Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis), and their motivations for seeking the Progenitors' treasure. "Mirrors" also contains a number of reveals about DS9 's Breen aliens , including that L'ak himself originates within the Breen Imperium.

For the first four episodes of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, audiences saw L'ak as a hulking green villain, determined to protect his lover Moll at any cost. Now, Discovery season 5, episode 5 reveals that audiences have been seeing the true face of one of the enigmatic Breen aliens from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . In DS9 , Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn) stated that no outsiders had seen what a Breen looked like under their armor and lived to tell the tale. Barring Fred (J. Adam Brown) and his guards from Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive", this is no longer the case.

Star Trek: Discovery has reintroduced the Breen as season 5's villains, and writer Carlos Cisco gives behind-the-scenes details on creating the Breen.

Discovery’s Breen Reveal Undermines A Big DS9 Mystery

There's no question that updated 32nd century design of the Breen refrigeration suits is a great upgrade for Star Trek: Discovery season 5 . The loss of the helmet's odd beak from the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine design makes them look sleeker and more like the armored warrior race that their reputation suggested. The main issue with the Breen in Discovery is that what's underneath the mask undermines the huge mystery that has surrounded the Breen since their introduction in DS9 . For years, Star Trek fans have speculated about what a Breen looks like underneath their armor, and now they discover it's a creature made of green Jell-O .

Worf's assertion that nobody had ever seen the face of a Breen and lived is undermined by Star Trek: Discovery season 5's love story . While the Breen remain secretive in "Mirrors", the very fact that L'ak shows his face out of love for Moll undermines the idea of an isolationist and secretive warrior race. Instead, it suggests that these implacable Star Trek: Deep Space Nine villains just need someone to love. This, combined with the confusing physiology of the newly-revealed Breen, means that the DS9 aliens in Discovery don't solve the mystery satisfyingly.

An abandoned plot for Star Trek: The Next Generation 's season 6 finale would have introduced the Breen as major antagonists for TNG 's final season.

Star Trek: Discovery’s Breen Design Is A Missed Opportunity

Star Trek: Discovery 's Breen design is a missed opportunity when compared to some of its other work in creating alien species. For example, Discovery season 4's antagonists, the non-humanoid Species 10-C felt alien in a way that Star Trek aliens had rarely felt since the days of TOS . With that in mind, Discovery could have really thought out of the box when it came to what was inside the Breen's refrigeration suits. Sadly, that isn't the case, as they're revealed to be that most enduring of sci-fi archetypes; the green man from outer space.

In an interview with The 7th Rule , Carlos Cisco spoke of the design of the Breen being inspired by " transparent deep sea fishes ."

The fact that the Breen are green humanoids is a missed opportunity, because the teases of the Breen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine always hinted that they may not be a humanoid species at all . Their lack of circulatory system and reliance on refrigeration suits implied they were potentially higher beings that forced themselves into a humanoid form. While that's sort of the case with the gelatinous beings that have " evolved " past a solid form in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, it's hard not to feel underwhelmed by the Breen turning out to be yet another humanoid alien species in the canon.

Shatner’s last appearancewas in the 1994 film Star Trek Generations , and – spoiler alert – he dies.

But Shatner cited a software company he promotes that would allow him to play a younger version of the captain. The company, Otoy, specializes in technology that “takes years off of your face, so that in a film you can look 10, 20, 30, 50 years younger than you are,” Shatner said.

Shatner even has a scenario where Kirk is resurrected.

“A company that wants to freeze my body and my brain for the future might be a way of going about it,” he said. “‘We’ve got Captain Kirk’s brain frozen here.’ There’s a scenario. ‘Let’s see if we can bring back a little bit of this, a little salt, a little pepper. Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 6 Review – Whistlespeak

Discovery’s search for the Progenitors’ technology takes the crew to a pre-Warp planet and runs afoul of the Prime Directive.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 6

Star Trek: Discovery (mostly) gets its final season back on track after last week’s flashback-filled snoozefest , but Michael and company’s search for the next clue hits a snag when the trail leads to a pre-Warp planet whose lack of technology makes accessing it more of a challenge than anyone expected. It’s a shift that comes as a welcome relief—the best part of this more adventure-oriented season has been its old-fashioned space explorer feel as Burnham and her crew bounce from planet to planet (or random interdimensional pocket of space). And it’s nice to finally get back to that, even if the planet Halem’no isn’t quite as exciting a side quest as some of us (read: me) may have wanted it to be.

The planet is largely arid, with a habitable zone that’s been created thanks to the work of Denobulan scientist Hitoroshi Kreel. A weather tower disguised as a sort of mountain peak, the tech emits a low-grade force field that protects the land around it from dust storms and pulls rain from the atmosphere on a semi-regular basis. All in all, it’s a technology that’s wildly advanced for the pre-Warp, pre-industrial society that lives on its surface and may have been built as part of some kind of humanitarian mission to help the people on its surface survive. The question of how, precisely, Kreel managed to do this without anyone on the planet noticing or why he chose this particular spot to hide his clue is something the episode is happy to handwave away. But, sure! Why not!

But, then again, very little about this consortium of old scientists determined to hide the Progenitor technology makes a ton of sense. Thanks to Kovich, we at least learn the identities of all five participants—Jinaal Bix (Trill), Carmen Cho (Terran), Marina Derex (Betazoid), Hitoroshi Kreel (Denobulan), and Vellek (Romulan)—who each came up with their hiding places and clue themes tied to their own lives or areas of expertise. ​How they all joined forces is anyone’s guess, but at least we have something of a roadmap as to where we’re headed now. (And I have to assume the Betazoid scientist is named in honor of Star Trek: The Next Generation ’s Marina Sirtis, which I admittedly already love.)

After Tilly and Michael disguise themselves in shabby, planet-appropriate attire (complete with convenient retinal tricorders that only make them look a bit like they belong in The Matrix ), they beam to the surface of Halem’no, which—at least in its habitable zone—is lush and green. The conceptualization of this planet and its society is the most intriguing part of this episode—particularly the phonetic elements of their language, known as Whistlespeak, which sounds like birdcall, doesn’t have words to denote things like class or status, recognizes at least three distinct genders, and prioritizes connection amongst its people. A timely reminder that simply because a society is not advanced in one way, doesn’t mean it isn’t in another. 

To find the next clue, Team Discovery must make their way inside the High Summit, the weather tower that the locals see as a place to commune with their gods and pray for the rain that keeps them all alive. A sacred place, access is restricted to those deemed especially holy or chosen through a race called the Journey of the Mother Compeer. Michael and Tilly immediately decide to participate in this very specific ritual without doing any research in it or even asking around about why everyone who’s won it appears to no longer be alive. To the surprise of no one, it’s actually a method of choosing those who will be sacrificed within the tower, trading their lives for the promise of rain and the chance to commune with their gods before they die. Tilly wins, because of course she does, and she allows a kind young woman named Ravah to tie with her so that she can too fulfill her dream of proving herself to her father, and now they’re both essentially marked for death. Good times! 

Not that any of us likely really expected Tilly to suffocate during this episode or anything, but truly the speed with which Michael jettisons the Prime Directive in the name of saving her friend is…honestly, something I wish the show would explore in a bit more depth. Because it actually ought to be an interesting story about how important Tilly is to her! Instead, it’s…just another example of the way that Michael’s constantly allowed to break the rules in ways that others are repeatedly punished for. Because, let’s face it, Rayner was demoted and publicly humiliated for doing much less.

And, for whatever reason, Discovery feels the need to overtly justify Michael’s choice, deliberately leaning into the idea that because she’s in for a penny, she might as well be in for a pound. I mean, it’s one thing to explain that the High Summit is a weather machine rather than the seat of vengeful gods. But it’s quite another to literally ferry Ravah’s dad Ohvanz up to their actual spaceship that is parked in space and show him what his planet looks like from orbit! Did she leave a spare warp drive behind her to top everything off? ( Ed note: Thank you to the eagle-eyed commenters who pointed out Michael only showed him Halem’no from space using the tech her team brought down with them. Is that better? I guess?) Maybe it all would be less annoying if it had truly ever felt as though Tilly was in some kind of real danger, or if it seemed as though the show was finally ready to tackle the cost of Michael’s reckless choices in a more serious and lasting way. Instead, it’s just another convenient shortcut she’ll inevitably face no consequences for. 

If every one of these clue hunts is supposed to either teach or test the person doing the searching—to ensure they’re trying to find the Progenitor technology for a good reason—what is this search (and Michael’s response to it) meant to show us? That friendship is magic? That climate change is real? That false gods exist? That you shouldn’t allow your loved ones to participate in poorly explained and potentially deadly rituals? Or it’s okay to do whatever it takes to save someone you care about, even if it means breaking rules to do so?

It’s particularly jarring when much of this episode is about unintended consequences—about what can happen when technology is used irresponsibly, even with the best intentions of the world behind it. The Denobulan scientist Hitoroshi Kreel tried to do a good thing by disguising high-tech weather equipment in what is essentially religious iconography, but it still ended up giving rise to ritual sacrifice and murder in the name of bringing rain. Discovery isn’t normally very subtle about such parallels, so I think we can all assume that whatever the Progenitors did leave behind for future generations to find, the question for Michael and the Federation will be more about whether anyone should have access to it at all. 

With just one more clue to go—and four more episodes in the season—-it’s anyone’s guess what’s coming as the Discovery enters the final phase of this story. Will Michael manage to unearth the Progenitors’ ancient, potentially galaxy-changing secret? Or will it turn out that the real advanced technology was actually the friends we made along the way?
