You really need a few days here to truly experience all the region has to offer.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ What a fantastic wine tour we had with the Yarra Valley Touring Company . A great selection of red and white wines, as well as gins and vodka, cheeses, chutneys, coffees and chocolates meant there was something for everyone. The tour was filled with informative fun facts about the region and was run at a perfect pace, plenty of time to sample and purchase but never rushed. Add in some great company and the lovely local producers we met along the way and it made for a truly amazing day out. Highly recommend and would take this tour again.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fantastic day out. Prompt pick up and excellent knowledge of the area and a great variety of places visited – local produce, local crafts, local food and wine. Transport was excellent, clean and comfortable. Highly recommend a day out with Yarra Valley Touring Company .

See What Our Guests Are Saying

Tripadvisor, june 2023.

Vinetrekker arranged an excellent tour of a mixture of established and newer wineries in the Yarra Valley. It was good to visit some hidden gems as well. Lunch at Yering Estate was excellent and the wine & cheese pairing at DeBortoli was a great ending to a memorable day. Safe & clean, organised, on time – no hesitation to recommend Vinetrekker.

This was a wonderful experience. I attended the tour as a solo guest and I felt very welcome and comfortable. Paul was a great host and ensured his guests comfort and needs were his highest priorities. Paul’s knowledge of the area and its history is exceptional, making the experience even more enjoyable. Not only was the wine tasting an amazing experience (with not one bad wine tasted) the food was to die for. From start to finish all of my expectations were exceeded and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

Plentyoflight

Tripadvisor, may 2023.

Awesome tour. The company Vinetrekker was proactive and flexible with my pickup and drop off. The tour guide Shane was very friendly and knowledgeable about both the history of the area and wine. The other guests were also friendly which made the trip extra special. We visited a variety of traditional, modern, and edgy wineries for a wide variety of experiences. The landscapes were gorgeous and overall it was a fantastic way to spend a day outside Melbourne. Don’t miss it!

Thoroughly enjoyed Yarra Valley Wine Day Tour. Could not have picked a better tour and tour guide (Rob) to show case the beautiful Yarra Valley. Perfect combination of great wine and food. The tour lived up to its reputation of a high ranking experience. Outstanding value for money. So many wonderful and memorable experiences. Thank you.

My partner and I had the best time on Paul’s wine tour. Paul was a great host, not only did he drive us from vineyard to vineyard but he knew a lot about the wines, the areas we were in and the different types of wine each vineyard had to offer – to our taste.

The 5 vineyards were amazing and the knowledge from both the sommeliers, Paul (& to our luck a couple of vineyard owners!) made the whole experience even more amazing. Lunch was very good quality and the wine pairing made it even better.

About the Yarra Valley wine region

The Yarra Valley is Australia’s oldest and most respected wine region. Vines were first planted in the valley in 1838 by the Scottish Ryrie brothers, who established Yering Station, which is still operational today. The valley’s cool climate and fertile soils proved to be well-suited to grape growing, and by the late 19th century, the Yarra Valley was producing some of the finest wines in Australia.

The early 20th century saw a decline in the Yarra Valley’s wine industry due in part to the phylloxera epidemic that devastated vineyards around the world. However, the industry began to recover in the 1960s, and by the 1980s, the Yarra Valley was once again producing world-class wines.

Today, the Yarra Valley is home to over 60 wineries, producing a wide range of premium wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz. The valley is also a popular tourist destination, with many wineries offering tours and tastings.

Wine Tours in the Yarra Valley with Melbourne Valley Wine Tours

There are many different wine tours available in the Yarra Valley, ranging from half-day tours to full-day tours. Some tours focus on a particular wine style, such as Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, while others offer a more general overview of the valley’s wines. Most tours include visits to 3 or 4 wineries, where you will have the opportunity to taste wines and learn about the winemaking process.

Trips from Melbourne

Many wine tours depart from Melbourne, making it easy to visit the Yarra Valley for a day. The drive from Melbourne to the Yarra Valley is about an hour on our 15 or 25-seater tour bus.

Oakridge Winery: This winery is known for its cool-climate wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc. They also produce a small range of fortified wines.

Seville Estate: This winery is known for its biodynamic wines. They produce a range of wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz.

Located in a cosy corner of Yarra Valley, Soumah specialises in Italian and French varietals. Their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are must-tries.

The winery also offers a delightful Italian-inspired restaurant where you can enjoy a two-course lunch.

📍Helen & Joey Estate

This winery is progressive and offers a wide range of wines. The panoramic views from Helen & Joey Estate are a bonus.

They even have a unicorn statue, one of the most photographed spots in Yarra Valley.

📍Yering Farm

Yering Station cellar door in Australia, a must-visit for anyone interested in wine tasting in Yarra Valley.

Yering Farm is the place to be if you’re looking for something more boutique.

Apart from their wines, they also produce some delicious apple ciders. It’s a family-run winery, so the experience is more intimate.

📍Balgownie Estate

Known for its rich history and premium wines, Balgownie Estate offers a comprehensive wine-tasting experience.

Their cellar door is a must-visit, and their restaurant offers some of the finest gourmet foods in the valley.

📍De Bortoli Wines

De Bortoli, a household name in Australian wine, offers a wide range of tastings. Their Noble One dessert wine is a must-try.

The winery also has a cheese maturation room, pairing their wines with some of the best local cheeses.

The Tee Pee Tours Experience: More Than Just a Wine Tour

Our story began roughly TEN years ago when Andrew and Adam embarked on a journey to redefine the typical bus tour. They envisioned an experience that was social, fun, and far from the typical experience. Two 22 year olds who had no idea what they were doing got a van, got some camping equipment, surfboards, bought a native American Teepee and put it on a property near a beach on the Great Ocean Road and tried to create a fun, laid back surfing and camping tour. That’s how Tee Pee Tours was conceived.

From that moment, we hit the ground running and haven’t stopped since. It was a grassroots, forever humble and small kind of tour that kept getting better and better. At a certain point, we wanted to apply the same method to another region of Melbourne, and about 5 years ago (just before COVID), we pivoted to Winery Tours. Today, we’re proud to say That Tee Pee Tours has become one of the most unique and highly rated providers of wine tours in Victoria….And even the country!

What makes us stand out from the crowd? It’s our commitment to creating an atmosphere that’s relaxed, flexible, sociable, and inclusive. From relaxing picnics to scenic bus rides, drinks, food and fun for friends, colleagues or the entire family, we’ve got options for everyone.

Tee Pee Tours – 5 Step Process

Step 1: first contact: your call, your tour: planning your ideal experience.

After we receive your online contact form or your booking form or you’ve called on  0423 237 833 , our friendly staff will discuss your requirements in detail. We will send options, prices and itinerary options either via email or text.

Whether it’s a wine tour, day trip, brewery tour, hens or bucks party, we’re here to tailor-make the perfect tour for you. Next, we’ll email or text a little more to just get it absolutely perfect for your day out. Some groups can be happy with the very first itinerary we talk about and this process is done in one email. Others want to explore all sorts of options. Either way, we are here for it!

After we get a better understanding of your interests, group size and personal style, we’re more than happy to provide some recommendations. We’ll then confirm where you want to go, what you’re really looking for (Unless ‘half day tour is important?)

Step 2: Make your booking to get the plan locked in

Once we’ve laid out the perfect plan for your day, we’ll send you the details for your approval. After making any necessary changes, we’ll get you to make a booking by paying a deposit on our website by clicking ‘Book Here’, then ‘Private Tours’. This is a non-refundable $100 deposit.

Once this booking is made and the plan is set, we then immediately book all of the venues discussed, allocate a vehicle, a driver and make sure everything is locked in. Sometimes people go straight to this step without contacting us, so we will make sure we get a plan going ASAP after you’ve booked.

Rest assured, our tours are flexible and we’re always happy to tweak things to make sure your day is exactly as you imagined.

Step 3: Rounding up the Troops

From the moment we have received your $100 deposit, things are locked in. We have got everything ready on our end. It’s now your job to start getting everyone organised and find out what your final numbers will be. We also recommend checking for any dietary requirements, finalising the pickup and drop off address, and any other minor details that we may need to know.

If everyone is paying for themselves, then we recommend collecting payments from them ASAP so we can get a good idea on numbers early. It’s in everyone’s best interest for this number to be communicated honestly, realistically, and frequently. The number of people dictates the price, the vehicle we use and the driver who can drive that vehicle.

Step 4: The Week Before and the Final Email

7 days before the tour, we will email you to give you all the very final details so you won’t have any more questions. This final email will include the driver’s details, the itinerary, rules expected behaviours, vehicle details and payment instructions. Payment will be via bank transfer/invoice or a payment link can be sent.

We do not require full payment until 2 days before the tour. Once payment is made and we are all good to go, there’s nothing left to do, except drink!

Step 5: The Day of Your Tour

On the day of your tour, our professional and friendly staff will be there to pick you up and drop you off wherever we have discussed and planned. Our guides provide recommendations, plenty of banter and overall, make sure everything runs smoothly. We have a bit of a common sense approach to the day.

If we feel something isn’t working or that people need more of this or less of this, we are always happy to add a few bottles on the table, or a cheese platter or whatever we think is reasonable. We want to make sure this is the best day ever so you’ll join us once again!

You got a question do ya?

What makes tee pee tours different from other wine tour providers.

Every Tee Pee Tour is relaxed, flexible, sociable, and inclusive. Beyond traditional wine tours, we also provide behind-the-scenes looks at Victorian restaurants, estates, breweries, distilleries, and stunning scenery.

Can I customise my wine tour?

Can Tee Pee Tours accommodate private groups or special occasions?

Yes, we can! Whether it’s a day out with the pals, a work function, a birthday, a hens party, or just a day out to see some wine country, we guarantee that no other operator will give you a better experience.

Do Tee Pee Tours only operate in Melbourne?

While Melbourne is our primary location, our tours extend to Victoria’s best wine regions, including Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, and Macedon Ranges. Thanks to our transportation services, you can embark on a wine tasting tour from Melbourne to all of these stunning regions.

How can I book a tour with Tee Pee Tours?

What makes Tee Pee Tours different from other wine tour operators?

We don’t take ourselves too seriously. We believe that running a tour is about creating the best possible atmosphere, one that’s relaxed, flexible, sociable, and inclusive. We put an emphasis on getting everyone to connect..and not in a lame cheesy way. Through organic conversation, or a communal playlist, We Get People Talking. We offer end-to-end transportation and let you decide where we go and how long we stay. Plus, our tour durations are very adaptable.

Does Tee Pee Tours cater to people who are not very interested in wine?

Of course! While we specialise in wine tours, we understand that not everyone’s a wine lover. That’s why we offer a range of alternatives including behind-the-scenes looks at Victorian restaurants, estates, breweries, and distilleries.

I'm organising a hen’s party in Melbourne. Can Tee Pee Tours help me plan the event?

Yes, we can! Our hens party wine tours are specially designed to provide an unforgettable experience for the entire group. We take care of every detail, allowing you to focus on having a great time.

I'm a seasoned wine enthusiast. Can Tee Pee Tours offer me a unique experience?

Definitely! We offer personalised wine tours, where we tailor the itinerary to match your preferences. This also comes with direct access to local wine makers and hands-on wine making activities. Even if some people in the group don’t love wine and others absolutely love it, we can pick places where we can split the group up. This is usually easy as some of the places are literally next door to one another. Self-Guided Wine Tour of Yarra Valley

Self Guided Tour of The Yarra Valley

Looking for a self-guided wine tour of Yarra Valley? The Yarra is one of the world’s top wine areas in large part due to its distinctive scenery. It traverses the valley bottom, following the recognizable and culturally significant Yarra River, which eventually weaves its way towards Melbourne, with mountains on either side acting as welcome, open arms.

The Yarra Valley has been a source of sustenance for its traditional guardians, the Wurundjeri people, since the start of humanity. This cultural significance gives the land a historical depth that has influenced the ideals of those who work it and spans more than 50,000 years.

Over time, there have been significant agricultural expansions in the area. The Kulin people turned 4,850 acres of Coranderrk Station forest into one of the Yarra Valley’s most fruitful locations between 1863 and 1875. This became the location of Victoria’s first vineyard in 1838.

This vineyard would later go on to produce the first Grand Prix winner in the southern hemisphere in 1889, starting the region’s lengthy list of wine awards. The Yarra Valley, Australia’s top cool-climate region has more than eighty vineyards spreading out throughout Healesville, Coldstream, Yarra Glen, Seville, and Lilydale.

Yarra Valley Layout

The geological conditions of the Yarra Valley wine region are different. A variety of continental, maritime, and cool climates that define the region are produced by its proximity to the sea and elevation, which ranges from 50 to 1250 meters above sea level.

To the north, the historic mountain soil reflects a lovely local history. Its richness is increased by traces of shattered sandstone scattered across the soil. The Lower and Upper Valley’s other main soil type is significantly younger and extremely friable.

How Can I Save Money in Yarra Valley?

The Yarra Valley, less than an hour’s drive from Melbourne, will make you feel like you are in a different country since it has top-notch local cuisine and wine, stunning scenery, cozy retreats, and luxurious activities. The Yarra Valley is one of the top wine-growing regions in the world, boasting more than 80 spectacular cellar doors, first-rate eateries serving seasonal fare, opulent lodging, and more.

With picturesque winding roads leading to charming hilltop communities, the Dandenong Ranges is a refuge of undiscovered surprises. Along with several artist studios, craft shops, and world-famous gardens to visit, there are also many walking and cycling trails through mountain ash forests and pure, clean air. This is a must-visit wine region for wine lovers .

Early autumn, around March, is the ideal time to visit the Yarra Valley because it is grape harvest season. This is when you will locate the season’s most recent wines. The weather is pretty lovely at the end of the spring, and it can be a good time to travel.

The Yarra Valley, Victoria’s first wine region was founded in 1838; but, 100 years later, the majority of its vines had been uprooted, and the region’s future appeared bleak. By 1937, there were no vineyards in the Yarra Valley due to a combination of factors, including the economic slump and competition from other wine regions.

The region saw a renaissance in the 1960s and 1970s when Dr. Bailey Carrodus, a scientist, created the first commercial wines in the area in more than 50 years, and Reg Egan from Wantirna Estate replanted the first vines. Bailey was a trailblazer noted for his distinctively delicate wines and brave vineyard choices.

When irrigation and big yields were the norms, he planted low-yielding, unirrigated vines. In an era when warm-climate wine areas and robust wines were in the spotlight, he embraced the Yarra Valley’s cool climate and leaner wine styles.

One of the many intrepid pioneers who gave the area new life through unafraid experimentation and ingenuity was Bailey. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, large, strong wine styles from places like the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale wowed critics and wine connoisseurs, ushering Australian wine into a golden age.

The chilly environment of the area put Yarra Valley growers in a difficult situation because they were unable to produce certain styles. Many people made the choice to accept their differences. Instead of attempting to replicate popular wines, they looked inward and learned more about the particular climate and soils of the Yarra Valley.

They started by creating wines that were unique to their grape sites and reflected those sites. These pioneers also began experimenting with various winemaking methods and paved the way for Australian wine produced in chilly climates. They influenced a new generation of winemakers in the process.

The region has two sub-regions, Upper Yarra and the Valley Floor, each with its own terroir and climate because it is located in a valley.

Valley Floor

The Melba Highway and the Maroondah Highway both follow the path of the valley bottom, which is home to the cities of Lilydale, Yarra Glen, and Healesville. The sub-regions gently sloping hills are often warmer than other sections of the region because the majority of it is located between 50 and 80 meters above sea level. With patches of granite in Yarra Glen and limestone close to Kangaroo Ground and Lilydale, the region primarily has grey soils.

Upper Yarra

Seville, Warburton, and Hoddles Creek are located along the Upper Yarra, which spans the majority of the southern side of the valley. The area’s most famous grape varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, are produced by the younger, fertile red soils of this sub-region in combination with a milder climate brought on by its increasing elevation (up to about 400 meters) and south-westerly winds after March.

What are the Best Wine Grapes Grown in Yarra Valley?

The grapes planted here include Pinot Noir , Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Riesling. The latter is presumably the one that is most commonly recognized as the distinctive wine variety of the Yarra Valley.

Here are some of the best historic sites we think you should visit on your self guided tour of Yarra Valley.

Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail

A well-known 39 km recreation trail for horseback riders, cyclists, and pedestrians is the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail. Starting at the back of the Lilydale Railway Station and ending in Warburton village, the trail follows the route of the ancient railway line through the breathtaking Yarra Valley. The “Warburton Trail” will take you past vineyards, picturesque mountain vistas, farms, and woodlands.

Buddha Bodhivana Monastery

Ajahn Chah, also known as Phra Bodhinyana Thera, was a revered and renowned north-east Thai meditation master who founded Buddha Bodhivana Monastery as a branch monastery. He passed away in 1992. The monastic complex’s resident teacher and the abbot is Venerable Ajahn Kalyano.

Yarra Ranges Regional Museum

All year long, the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum offers engaging, educational, and entertaining events. A few of the attractions for all age groups are their unique exhibitions, permanent collection, a calm café, museum shop, and programs for all ages.

The Yarra Valley is one of the most popular wine regions in the world for a reason. Given that Melbourne is only an hour away, it is ideal for weekend getaways, day trips and self-guided wine tours. There are more than 160 wineries in the area, giving guests a variety of places to sample the wines.

Hubert Estate

The Ryan Hospitality Group (The Prince, Mitchelton Winery, Nagambie Brewery & Distillery) and St Hubert’s, one of the Yarra Valley’s oldest producers, union-produced Hubert Estate. With a thorough makeover of St. Hubert’s current footprint, the winery and cellar door is poised to become the newest must-visit destination in the area, converting the breathtaking site into a dual-level estate. Cera Stribley, a renowned architectural and interior design firm, is to be credited with the venue’s redesign.

The team behind Dixons Creek’s Fin Wine and Cré Wine established a cellar door/restaurant in March 2021. You can sample wines, ciders, and plaquettes created with “minimum faffery” here. These drinks are also referred to as lo-fi or low-intervention drinks. Up back, there is a tasting area with a large wine wall, and a few tables and most of the seating is outside (smart). During the winter, there are only two weekends of operation; however, service is more frequent in the spring.

Rob Dolan Wines

The vineyard uses fruit from all across Victoria to produce a great selection of cool-climate wines, from the budget-friendly, fruit-forward True Colors line to the upscale Signature Series bottles. There are exquisite cabernet sauvignons, a grape with a long history in the Yarra Valley , as well as the conventional chardonnay and pinot noir from the Yarra Valley (including a fantastic Chardy with malolactic fermentation).

Herd Bar & Grill

This underground bunker is located just off the main thoroughfare in the burgeoning Healesville. A collection of warm blond wood slats standing at attention like a bundle of matchsticks makes this structure one of the most distinctive in the neighborhood. Inside, there is a remarkable contrast between different genres and textures. Former Gigi Baba chef Trevor Schneider’s substantially updated Modern Australian menu offers big sharing meals and hearty flavors at fantastically low rates. Note that sitting is available at the bar, at tables, or in the lounge sections, and that the cuisine is meant to be shared.

Immerse Restaurant

Inside Immerse Restaurant

Pic: Inside Immerse Restaurant

The Age Good Food Guide has recognized the highly regarded Immerse restaurant for seven years straight, and it never ceases to impress. To create a genuinely fantastic dining experience, local farm goods and seasonal dishes are combined by Italian-trained chef David Poskus. The restaurant has high ceilings, exposed brickwork, and warm woods, which give it a country-rural vibe reminiscent of the Yarra Valley.

Where Should I Stay on a Wine Tour of Yarra Valley?

Amelina cottages.

Amelina Cottages, which provide views of both gardens and mountains, is only a 6-minute stroll from Marysville’s downtown. There is adjacent free private parking. Gallipoli Park is a 10-minute walk away from the 4.5-star Amelina Cottages Marysville, while Marysville Golf Club is a 3-minute drive away. The distance to Buxton Ridge Winery is 12 minutes by car. A warm spa bath or winter nights in front of the fireplace are both options for visitors. Using the available private BBQ facilities or the fully equipped kitchen, you can make a delicious supper.

Tuck Inn Yarra Valley

The historic Yarra Valley Railway and Healesville’s main street are also within one minute and five minutes walk, respectively, from the free Wi-Fi-equipped Tuck Inn Yarra Valley. The RACV Country Club Golf Course is 5 minutes away by car from Tuck Inn Yarra Valley. Within a 10-minute walk, you may reach Coronation Park and Queens Park. Driving time from Melbourne’s city center is an hour. The air-conditioned apartments include a TV, a kitchenette, and a private bathroom with a shower, hairdryer, and complimentary toiletries. There are free amenities, towels, and bed linens in every room.

How Can I Save Money in Yarra Valley?

With numerous places and wineries to visit, visitors can go beyond their budgets, which is not that pleasant. One of the best ways to save money is to avoid expensive accommodations and transportation. It is good to stay near the wineries and other sites you intend to visit to cut down the cost of transportation.

Wine Tours of the Yarra Valley Final Thoughts

Follow the meandering roads through the Yarra Valley, and you will find something for everyone: world-class wines and artisan beer, well-kept gardens and national parks, hot air balloon rides, and skydiving. One of Australia’s best wine areas is only around an hour’s drive from Melbourne, and while some visitors come for day visits to the cellar doors, the Yarra Valley has a lot more to offer than just sipping fine wine.

In this unique region of the Victorian countryside, life moves at a different pace. Here, you may browse specialty stores and boutiques in small towns, visit art museums and nature sanctuaries, and sample local chocolate, cheese, tea, and other goods.

The vibe: The Yarra Valley remains Victoria’s premier urban getaway because there is so much to do, see, eat, and drink there. Boutique hotels nestled in the forest, some of Australia’s top wineries, well-known cheese shops, and some genuinely magnificent drives can all be found here. Pack your bags for a sneaky weekend getaway or prepare for a week of relaxation. You won’t regret your decision.

9 Places to See the Summer Olympics Without Setting Foot in Paris

You may have trouble finding accommodations or tickets to events in Paris, but other destinations around France are hosting sports like soccer, sailing, basketball and surfing.

The city of Marseille, France, a collection of red-roofed buildings spread across green hills along several turquoise bays dotted with ships.

By Sophie Stuber

For sports fans, Paris will be the center of the universe this summer — and with 15 million Olympic and Paralympic visitors expected, it will feel like it, with crowds and high prices. But Paris isn’t the only Olympic site in France: Nine destinations outside the metro region are also hosting events, giving travelers a way to catch some action without getting caught up in the crush.

In places like Bordeaux, Marseille and even Tahiti, you can watch top athletes compete in soccer, basketball, sailing and surfing. (Tickets have been added in batches, so if the ones you want aren’t available, keep checking the ticketing site, tickets.Paris2024.org . If all else fails, the official resale platform opens on May 15 .)

And when you’re not watching sports, you can take advantage of museums, parks, design centers, and fresh food and wine options. In Nantes, you can even ride a mechanical elephant.

Here are some ideas for planning your own alternative Olympic trip.

Basketball: July 27 to Aug. 4; tickets from 50 euros ($54).

Handball: Aug. 6 to 11, tickets from €45.

Start with a stroll around Vieux-Lille and a coffee in the Grande Place, taking in the colorful facades of this city near the Belgian border. Head over to the St.-Sauveur area to see the Art Deco belfry and exhibitions at Gare St.-Sauveur , a former train station. On Sundays, at the rambling Wazemmes market , about 400 vendors offer produce, fish, plants, fabrics, textiles and leather goods. Head out to Parc du Héron , east of the city, to see the LaM museum (€7), with works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Joan Miró. Lille is better known for beer than for wine, and the Brasserie Gobrecht offers brewery tours every Saturday (reservations recommended).

Where to stay: Hotel de la Paix (€354 per night); Hotel Carlton (€406).

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 2; tickets from €24.

Capital of a region best known for its wine, this small southwestern city sells local wine-walk maps at its tourist office. Stop by the Marché des Capucins , a local indoor market that also houses Bistro Poulette , a slightly chaotic and very delicious spot serving moules-frites, or mussels with fries. In the afternoon, check out the Bassins des Lumières (€15), the largest digital art center in the world, and the Cité du Vin (€21), which offers wine-tasting experiences. To wind down in a quiet wine bar, try Yarra , or for a cocktail, Symbiose . If you have time for side trips, spend a day in St.-Emilion, about 27 miles away, where you can sample great wines. Or check out the nearly 340-foot-high Dune du Pilat , the tallest sand dune in Europe — about 37 miles southwest of Bordeaux, near the beach town of Arcachon.

To stay: Les Chambres de Marie (€170); La Maison Galiène (€259); Yndo Hotel (€355); Le Palais Gallien Hôtel & Spa (€419).

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 8; tickets from €24.

The street signs in Nantes are in both Breton and French, reflecting the city’s historical ties to Brittany. Start at Talensac Market for picnic supplies, especially radishes, local cheeses and strawberries. Pick up local delicacies like Gâteau Nantais (almond poundcake) and Far Breton (flan with Armanac-soaked prunes). Take your picnic lunch to the courtyard of the Château des Ducs de Bretagne , a medieval castle and museum (courtyard is free; museum is €9). On the Île de Nantes, a former shipyard has been transformed into a wild mechanical theme park. The Machines de l’Île mixes Jules Verne’s stories with Leonardo da Vinci’s designs in the form of a ridable mechanical elephant and sea creatures (€9.50 for the elephant ride or gallery visit). The Mémorial de l’Abolition de l’Esclavage (free) covers Nantes’s history as the most active slave-trading port in 18th-century France. The artists behind the glass-and-concrete memorial, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Julian Bonder , aimed to create “a metaphorical and emotional reminder of the primarily historical, but also very current, struggle for the abolition of slavery.”

To stay: Hotel Voltaire Opéra (€103); Hotel de la Cité (€120).

Châteauroux

Shooting: July 27 to Aug. 5; tickets from €24.

The small city not far from the Loire Valley is named for Château Raoul , the 10th-century castle that’s now part of a local official’s private residence. The best view of the château is from the Gütersloh Bridge. Follow the “coulée verte” — or green corridor — along the banks of the Indre River, stopping by Parc de Belle-Isle , which has a lake for swimming, with kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to rent, as well as a beach, playgrounds and camping. The Franciscan Cordeliers Convent (free), which dates to the 13th century, today offers contemporary art exhibits and miles of gardens, and the Bertrand Museum (free), a former 18th-century townhouse, showcases diverse collections in each of its 26 rooms, including the plaster original of the Camille Claudel sculpture “Sakuntala.”

To stay: Au Lys Blanc (€138); Les Rives du Château (€210 for a two-bedroom apartment).

Lyon and St.-Étienne

Soccer: Lyon, July 24 to Aug. 9; tickets from €24. St.-Étienne, July 24 to 31; tickets from €24.

It will be easy to catch soccer matches in either Lyon or St.-Étienne, only an hour apart by train or car in east-central France. In Lyon, often called the gastronomic capital of France, visit the majestic Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica , then savor an ice cream at La Fabrique Givrée . Explore the city’s network of covered passageways, called traboules — originally for workers to transport textiles and later used during World War II by the French Resistance for clandestine meetings. Then climb up to the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse neighborhood, with its tiny streets, shops and views of Lyon below. On a clear day, you can even see Mont Blanc. The Lugdunum museum (€7) and the nearby Roman theater (€4) take visitors back to 43 B.C., when Lyon was known as Lugdunum, and La Maison des Canuts (€9.50), covers the city’s history as a capital of silk.

Between Lyon and St.-Étienne, Pilat Regional Natural Park offers more than 900 miles of rocky terrain for hiking and biking, culminating at the summit of 4,700-foot Crêt de la Perdrix , with views of the Alps and Massif Central range.

St.-Étienne, about 40 miles southwest of Lyon, is transforming its historical industrial identity into one of design and innovation. At the heart is the Cité du Design (€4.50), the former site of a weapons factory, which has served as a center for art and research since 2010. The complex, now a key economic force in the city, is open to the public year-round and hosts art and design exhibitions.

To stay in Lyon: Fourvière Hotel (€189); Hôtel du Théâtre (€323).

To stay in St.-Étienne: Le Parc 42 (€113); Le Golf Sauna (€269).

Sailing (including windsurfing, kitesurfing and more): July 28 to Aug. 8; tickets from €24.

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 6; tickets from €24.

This Mediterranean port city mixes urban grit and natural beauty. Start by visiting Le Panier, the village-like oldest part of the city. Try navettes , a traditional orange flower biscuit, and sample some sardines or panisses , traditional chickpea fries, on a sunny terrace. Detour through the touristy but pleasant Old Port on the way to Mucem (€11), the first major museum dedicated to Mediterranean civilization and cultures. Have a pick-me-up at Deep Coffee Roasters , a specialty roaster tucked away between touristy shops. At sunset, climb up to Cours Julien , a hip neighborhood with beautiful views for your apéro. Don’t miss the Cité Radieuse , a UNESCO-listed apartment complex that shows off the architect Le Corbusier’s Modernist mastery (you can stay at the hotel in it). And just southeast of the city, the Calanques , a series of small, narrow coves , offer miles of oceanside trails and rocky scrambles along turquoise water.

To stay: Hotel Le Corbusier (€229); Maison Juste (€300).

Soccer: July 24 to 31; tickets from €24.

Summer is peak season in Nice, the queen city of the French Riviera, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean. Run, bike or in-line skate along the Promenade des Anglais , a four-mile seaside path. Then climb up to the Colline du Château , a rocky hill east of the promenade with views of Nice and even as far as the Alps. For a longer walk, follow the trails from Coco Beach to the Cap de Nice along the coves. Then head to Cours Saleya , a pedestrian section of the Old Town, with flower stands, antiques and local food like the socca , a chickpea pancake. The Musée de Préhistoire Terra Amata (€5), constructed on top of an excavation site, reveals what Nice was like up to 400,000 years ago. Or just enjoy one of Nice’s pebbled beaches in a lounge chair.

To stay: Hôtel Rossetti (€186); Yelo Mozart (€238).

Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Surfing: July 27 to 31 ( events could shift through Aug. 4, depending on surf conditions); fan zones free.

For surfing’s second Olympics since its debut in Tokyo, the competition takes place far from mainland France in Tahiti, part of French Polynesia. Since the wave is offshore, there will be two ticket-free fan zones — Taharu’u Beach and Paofai Gardens — to watch the events on large screens. A third fan zone at PK0 beach in Teahupo’o will have free tickets but limited access. Tahiti offers white sands and turquoise lagoons in addition to near-perfect waves.
