10 Best Breweries in Los Angeles

Craft beer lovers, come thirsty and hoist a pint in some of the best breweries in Los Angeles and beyond!

Mexico’s national currency is the Mexican Peso, but U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere.

Many west coast locals will be acclimated to the water, but for the uninitiated, it can feel brisk, particularly outside the summer months. Consider a rash guard or similar coverage if you’re not used to cooler waters.

If you’re sampling wine in Ensenada, you’re going to find something you’d like to bring back. Not to worry — though there are alcohol restrictions onboard, you’re welcome to check your finds when re-boarding and we’ll hold them until it’s time to take them home!

BOLD FLAVORS ALONG THE BAJA COAST

Mexican cuisine is beloved around the world, and the food you’ll find along the Mexican Riviera has a flavor all its own. From Sonoran specialties like machaca stew to Baja beach-day classics like shrimp and fish tacos, you’ll find plenty of crave-worthy flavors to savor during your Mexico cruise.

Machaca Stew with Rice, Mexico

SAVOR THIS STEW

A staple of the Sonoran cuisine popular in northern Mexico, machaca guisada is a stew that spotlights spiced beef or donkey. The meet is dried like jerky, pounded and simmered in spiced liquid until it’s tender again. It’s best enjoyed with flour tortillas.

Mexico Ensenada Fish Taco Salsa Avocado

LET’S TACO ‘BOUT IT

Even if you’ve never visited Mexico, chances are you’ve tried shrimp or fish tacos before. That said, nobody does them like they do along the Baja coast. Locals in the region typically serve tacos with grilled or fried seafood topped with lettuce or cabbage, pico de gallo and a sour cream or citrus mayonnaise.

Traditional Mexican Tamales

TAMALE TIME

Though tamales are popular throughout central and south America, the ones you’ll find along Mexico’s western coast are unique. These are typically stuffed with pork (called guemes tamales) or chicken (tamales fajados de pollo) along with simmered olives and raisins.

RELATED PORTS

Continue to experience the charm of Mexico by cruising to Ensenada, which is also located on the Baja peninsula, or Cabo San Lucas, which is further down the coast. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Los Cabos—or the Capes—sits at the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula, a narrow strip of land whose varied geography makes for plenty of interesting and unusual activities. You can ride a camel, or enjoy more predictable pursuits including fishing, golfing and whale-watching. On your Cabo cruise you can visit picture-perfect El Arco, an arch that may look familiar thanks to its cameo on postcards and advertisements. North of the capes, you can drop by the famed Hotel California. And if you've worked up an appetite on your Cabo cruise, you won't be disappointed: Los Cabos offers plenty to enjoy at the table as well, with farm-fresh fruits and vegetables and, of course, seafood being the mainstays here. Regardless, Holland America Line makes sure that Cabo cruises have plenty of new and traditional things for guests to experience.

Main Baja California: A Remarkable Journey Itinerary

The main Baja California: A Remarkable Journey cruise begins in Loreto with an overland transfer to San Carlos for embarkation. Explore the Pacific coastline before sailing southbound around the tip of the Baja Peninsula, then northbound in the Sea of Cortez and returning to Loreto.

Route map of Eastbound Baja California: Remarkable Journey cruise, operating between San Carlos and Loreto, Mexico, with visits to Laguna San Ignacio, Bahia Magdalena, Los Cabos & more.

Upon arrival in Loreto, transfer to San Carlos and embark the ship.

National Geographic Venture

Explore the ever-shifting sand dunes of Isla Magdalena, on a cross-island walk to one of the most pristine beaches in the Pacific. Bird watching can be excellent here, with abundant seabirds in action and shorebirds patrolling the beaches as they fatten up and prepare for long journeys to Arctic breeding grounds.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Laguna San Ignacio is a large bay and favored haunt of the gray whales in Baja. The ship will anchor at the mouth of this remote and important locale. Explore the lagoon via local pangas with expert local guides. For some reason, the whales here seem to be friendlier than they are elsewhere. It’s not unusual for mothers and calves to approach the boats, the calves often playing hide and seek.

Enjoy the ship’s amenities, attend expert-led talks, and watch for a wide variety of marine life, including the largest animal on Earth, the blue whale, as you travel south along the Pacific coast of the peninsula.

Cruise past the spectacular Friars Rocks at Land’s End. Perhaps visit the historic town center of San Jose del Cabo. For those who wish, a visit to the historic town center of San José del Cabo can be arranged. After decades of exploration here, there are still discoveries of new places and exciting events to experience: bow-riding bottlenose dolphins, sperm whales near the ship and a pod of fin whales feeding around a convergence zone. The best areas for whale watching remain consistent: the waters south of Isla Carmen, Canal de Ballenas up north and near the mouth of Bahia Concepción. Whether on the bridge of the ship, or expedition landing crafts or kayaks, enjoy being in prime position to observe it all.

Disembark in Loreto after breakfast and transfer to the city center. Schedules permitting, take the opportunity to visit the first mission in Baja California, as well as the nearby museum, to learn more about what makes this town so special. Enjoy free time to explore quaint shops and vibrant side streets. After lunch, transfer to the Loreto Airport for flights home.

Disembark in San Carlos after breakfast and transfer to Loreto. Choose to visit the first mission in Baja California, as well as the nearby museum to learn more about what makes this town so special. Enjoy free time to explore quaint shops and vibrant side streets. After lunch, transfer to Loreto Airport for flights home.

Small Ship Cruises in Baja California

A Baja California cruise will sail you into a world of blue seas, golden cliffs, and majestic wildlife. Baja’s position between the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean makes it uniquely suited to a wide range of sights and activities. On cruises to Baja California, you’ll go beaching, snorkeling, kayaking, mule riding, and hiking- and don’t forget the whales, sharks, dolphins, and sea lions that make Baja a world-class marine wildlife destination.

Top things to do and see in Baja California

Sea of Cortez - Every Mexico cruise visits this UNESCO World Heritage Site, the star “aquarium” of Baja California. Thanks to the Colorado River, there are plenty of nutrients in the water to feed plankton, which are the base of the marine food chain. Species biodiversity in the Sea of Cortez is high, with more than twenty kinds of cetaceans and the charismatic Whale Sharks and Manta Rays.

Loreto Bay Marine Park - Mexico boat cruises to this national park are rewarded with breathtaking white sand beaches, the chance to kayak among islands with a range of terrestrial animals (bighorn sheep, birdlife) and abandoned human-made ruins, diving opportunities, sea lion colonies, and whales. Loreto Bay boasts a high number of endemic species (animals and plants which exist nowhere else).

Bahia Magdalena - Cruises to Baja California visit this Pacific location from January through March for a magnificent sight: California Gray Whales and their young. These enormous cetaceans travel 12,000 miles from Alaska to reach Bahia Magdalena’s sheltered calving grounds. In this bay, a mix of warm and cool ocean waters nurtures a wealth of other marine life as well.

Bahia Agua Verde - Baja cruises let you disembark often to experience the peninsula’s charming culture and rugged landscape, and at Bahia Agua Verde, you can add traditional mule riding to the mix! Local guides from the small fishing village of Puerto Agua Verde take you and your steed up into the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range for perfect views of turquoise water, red rock, and green cacti.

Ensenada Grande - Just north of La Paz lies Isla Partida, whose main draw is the area known as Ensenada Grande. Sea of Cortez cruises visit Ensenada Grande for its famous beach, rated one of the top twelve beaches in the world! Ensenada Grande also offers plenty of marine wildlife with which to snorkel, and scenic arroyos for trekking.

Isla Espiritu Santo - Espiritu Santo’s secluded coves are separated by long fingers of red rock; the indented shoreline is perfect for kayakers who want the feeling of exploring pristine territory. Hiking on this island lets you see Brown Pelicans, Great Blue Herons, Blue-Footed Boobies, and other special birds. In Bahia de la Paz  between Espiritu Santo and the mainland, swimming with Whale Sharks from November-mid January makes unforgettable memories.

Los Islotes - This rocky outcrop off Isla Espiritu Santo is famous for its resident sea lion colony, which can be observed by boat. Your adventure cruise will also make sure you get the chance to snorkel with the playful sea lion pups and observe a rainbow of fish life.

Isla San Francisco - This Sea of Cortez island boasts a long, crescent-shaped bay with plenty of opportunities to snorkel with octopus, rays, eels, and colorful fish. Pelicans and other birdlife sit sentinel along the coastline’s rocky cliffs. When in bloom, the crimson flowers of the local cacti offer a great color foil to the blue sky in your photographs.

Cabo Pulmo - In the southern reaches of Baja California, the Cabo Pulmo National Park offers a prime example of a successful conservation effort. You’ll see the results of local conservation passion in the reef when you SCUBA dive amongst healthy red sea fans and large schools of fish. You can also see Humpback Whales in this area.

Hike, kayak, paddle-board, and explore by skiff - Mexico boat cruises take advantage of Baja’s easy ocean-mountain access; it allows them to offer itineraries that are packed with activity options. The rocky, golden arroyos of Baja’s mountain range are perfect for relaxed hikes or mule rides to incredible panoramic views. Baja’s many protected bays are the perfect place to experience solo- and small-craft boating, since the water is calm, and the coastline is varied and fun to explore.

Wildlife - Large marine animals really give Baja California its claim to fame. When you combine the species in the Gulf of California and the species in the Pacific waters off Baja’s west coast, you’ve got the following all-star list: Blue Whales, Gray Whales, Humpback Whales, Sperm Whales, Fin Whales, Orcas, Common and Bottlenose Dolphins, Pilot Whales, Whale Sharks, sea lions, and leaping manta and mobula rays.

Baja - La Paz , Loreto, Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo - The cities of Baja California each have their own personality and attractions. The busiest tourist destination is Cabo San Lucas, a resort metropolis which was little more than a fishing town a couple decades ago. The two Cabos are in the south next to the international airport. Loreto and La Paz lie farther north along the Gulf of California.

Top Tips for visiting Baja California on a cruise

  • Don’t forget your camera and binoculars for the incredible sunsets and far-off whale or bird sightings.
  • Bring rash guards and water shoes for marine activities.
  • We also recommend bringing your own mask and snorkel, since rental gear doesn’t always fit every face.
  • Good walking shoes and quick-dry clothing (and a hat!) will make the land-based activities much more comfortable.

Best time to cruise Baja California

Baja cruises run from November through March. Plan ahead to make sure you get to see the wildlife you love. The best time to take a Baja California Cruise for Gray Whales is January-mid March. For Whale Sharks, it’s November-mid January. Humpbacks are plentiful December-mid March. Blue and Sperm Whales are plentiful in November, and Sperm Whales come back in force from February-March.

Where do Baja California cruises depart from?

Most Mexico small ship cruises to the Sea of Cortez depart from La Paz or San Jose del Cabo. Regardless, the most-used international airport is Los Cabos on the peninsula’s southern tip, a 45-minute drive from the city of San Jose del Cabo. Los Cabos receives regular international flights on Mexican and North American airlines. Even if your Baja adventure cruise is set to depart from La Paz, you may be met in San Jose del Cabo and driven overland to the port of departure.

7 or 10 Night Baja Vacation Cruise | Jan - Dec 2024 - 2025 | Two Adventures to Choose From. Sea Lions, Snorkeling, and Sun.

Steinbeck, Cousteau… now it’s your turn to explore the “world’s aquarium” on a Mexico cruise in the Sea of Cortes. Greet sea lions from the boat or skiff, or slip into a wetsuit for an even closer encounter. Getting your sea legs is easy too—relax with toes in the sand, on a hike, or atop a mule through the canyons of Baja. Land and sea are a step, or kayak, away. Whale watch from the boat, and visit grey whales and their babies during calving season or gentle whale sharks on your sailing. There are plenty of opportunities to spot your favorite whale throughout the season going farther north than other cruise lines or being captivated by the marine and sealife throughout the adventure through remote islands.

Complete with a mule ride and plenty of snorkeling with colorful marine life, experience the bounty that is Baja. Get into the wild with a mule ride accompanied by a local ranchero or a snorkel with the sea lions in a quiet cove.

Cabo San Lucas is a major port city located at the southern tip of Baja California Peninsula, in Mexico's Baja California Sur state. The road distance to the less popular cruise port San Jose del Cabo  is approx 33 km (20 ml), or around 30 min travel time.

Cabo San Lucas has population around 80,000 (metro over 300,000). Cabo is rated one of Mexico's top 5 tourist destinations, best known for its beautiful beaches, balnearios (medicinal baths), scuba diving locations, marine life. A heavily trafficked destination for tourists is Los Cabos Corridor, with numerous timeshares and resorts along the coast between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.

San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas form together a major tourism travel destination, with over 900,000 annual hotel guests. Both cities are served by Los Cabos International Airport. The airport serves domestic flights connecting to Mexico City, Culiacan, Los Mochis, Guadalajara, El Bajio, Loreto , Tijuana, Mazatlan , Monterrey. International flights connect with Canada ( Toronto , Calgary, Vancouver , Victoria , Edmonton, Kelowna, Montreal , Ottawa), USA ( Los Angeles , San Diego , San Francisco , San Jose, Portland Oregon , Sacramento , Seattle , Milwaukee, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Detroit , Minneapolis-St Paul , NYC , Chicago , Denver, Las Vegas, Austin, Baltimore , Dallas, Houston , Washington DC) and UK ( London ).

Cabo houses a wide range of wildlife, including sharks, rays, birds, and fish, like striped marlin and mahi-mahi (dorado). Cabo San Lucas features the world's highest-paying marlin tournament. Despite rising concerns over general safety for tourists traveling to Mexico, Cabo remains among the safest destinations in the world. Pods of whales are often observed in the area in the winter.

The city is also a popular call port for many major cruise shipping companies . Cabo San Lucas also provides a small international airfield, handling air traffic for general aviation flights as well as air taxi service. Many travelers get around the area via the numerous local taxis which service the primary parts of the city, the Corridor and the airport. A system of small buses is also available to be used by locals and tourists, which costs a few pesos and is much less expensive than taxis.

The most popular cruise shore excursions and city attractions are the Land’s End (rock formation rising from the ocean at Baja California's southernmost tip; with two beaches - Lovers' Beach and Divorce Beach), wildlife watching (for humpback and gray whales/December thru April), day excursion to San Jose del Cabo (approx 30-min from downtown), Chileno Bay (scuba diving and snorkeling), Playa El Medano (miles-long beach lined up with all-inclusive hotels and resorts), 4x4 and boat tours.

Cabo San Lucas cruise terminal

The Port has no dedicated cruise terminal (building). Cruise ships in Cabo San Lucas anchor in the bay (offshore) from where their passengers are tendered to the yacht marina (inner harbor). The Marina is located at just 10-min walking distance (along the waterfront) from downtown.

Baja California

A Mexican peninsula extending into the Pacific Ocean from the south end of the U.S. state of California , it provides some of Mexicos most dramatic sea and landscapes. This includes everything from vast and remote deserts, dormant volcanoes and wonderful old mission towns. The first political capital of "old California" is found here as well as many remnants of the colonial past, (Alta California or Upper California roughly translates into the modern day US state and was settled later). Camping and hiking opportunities are plentiful, and much of the region is sparsely or even unpopulated.

The "Baja" is also home to world class surfing, sailing and deep sea fishing destinations.

The Baja peninsula is one of the longest in the world and offers an interesting mix of cultures with a wonderful combination of Latino, Hispanic, pre-Hispanic and even some Anglo influences. It varies greatly even from the Mexican "mainland" with its own lifestyle and identity within Mexico.

La Paz Mexico Port Guide

Nestled between the Sierra Laguna mountains and the Sea of Cortez on the Baja California peninsula lies the laid-back port of La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur. The name translates to “The Peace,” and this lovely spot indeed offers a relaxing, enriching vacation.

On a Baja California cruise, relax on some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches in the Mexican Riviera. Stroll the 20-block waterfront Malecón and admire spectacular sunsets. Dine on the freshest seafood and world-class cuisine. Discover why Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez “the aquarium of the world.” Snorkel with gentle whale sharks. Search for blue whales migrating, manta rays gliding, and dolphins jumping.

While we don't currently sail to La Paz, you can still discover the beauty of Mexico on one of our cruises to the Mexican Riviera .

Top sights & attractions for cruises to la paz, balandra beach.

A short drive north of La Paz brings you to a beautiful soft sand beach with three glittering bays, warm shallow water, and gentle currents. You can wade out hundreds of yards through this breathtaking azure water. Climb a path to the top of the nearby hill for spectacular views of the bays, the mountains, and the Sea of Cortez. Or, simply snorkel, kayak, or paddleboard and enjoy the marine life all around you.

The center of activity in La Paz is the stunning Malecón waterfront boardwalk. Stroll the 3.5-mile-long promenade, where you can marvel at ancient architecture, listen to music, stop at restaurants, art galleries, and shops, grab an ice cream cone, or watch the fantastic sunset over the water.

Espiritu Santo Island

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this uninhabited island is where you can experience world-class water sports like scuba diving, snorkeling, and sea kayaking. On land, trek the trails and see cactus, 98 species of birds, and colonies of sea lions. In the water, you’ll come across colorful parrotfish, moray eels, rainbow wrasse, angelfish, manta rays, dolphins, and sea turtles. It’s an experience not to be missed.

Top Things to Do in La Paz

Whale shark encounters.

La Paz is one of the very few places in the world where you can swim with peaceful whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea. Snorkel alongside them each year from October to May, when these gentle giants visit the area's waters to feast on a bounty of krill and plankton. Swim with the whales on a snorkeling tour or take a day cruise to watch the whales up close.

Sandboarding

On a cruise to La Paz, travel inland to one of the area’s sand dunes for a thrilling sandboarding experience. Rent a board and “surf” the dunes without getting wet. Stand, sit, or lie on the board—the choice is yours.

Sport Fishing

Take an excursion to go offshore fishing in the bountiful waters of the Sea of Cortez. Anglers here can catch yellowfin tuna, marlin, grouper, snapper, dorado, and many other species of fish. Guides will take you to the best spots for fishing, so don’t forget your camera to document your catch.

Top Food & Drink Spots Near La Paz Cruise Port

As you stroll the Malecón, you’ll see many restaurants and food stalls offering fresh seafood, artisanal cheese, and other local delicacies. Of course, fish tacos and margaritas are a staple in Mexico, but the La Paz area is well-known for local delicacies.

Try an order of chocolate clams, named for their color and not their flavor. Fresh-caught tuna, ceviche, octopus, and other treasures from the sea are ubiquitous in La Paz, but you can also find international cuisine at many of the area’s restaurants. Damiana is a Mexican shrub that has a woody, minty flavor and is used to make artisanal chocolates and flavorful margaritas. Ask your bartender to use it instead of triple sec. From street food to fine dining, La Paz has it all.

Culture & History of La Paz

La Paz was first inhabited by Stone Age hunter-gatherers who left traces of their presence in the form of rock paintings found throughout the Baja California Peninsula. The area’s modern history begins with the landing of Hernán Cortés, who sailed here 14 years after overthrowing the Aztec Empire in 1535. He named the bay Santa Cruz, but in 1596, Admiral Sebastian Vizcaino arrived and renamed it La Paz.

La Paz was a Spanish possession until Mexico gained its independence in 1822. It became the capital of Baja California in 1830 and La Paz remained the capital of Baja California Sur when the peninsula was split in two. Today, La Paz has a population of nearly 250,000. Spanish is universally spoken in La Paz, and many of the shopkeepers and restaurant staff also speak English.

La Paz Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Your ship docks in the port of Pichilingue, which is about 10 miles north of La Paz. Upon your arrival, the port comes alive with entertainers performing local music and dance. It also contains many outdoor market stalls where you can buy local food, gifts, and other necessities.Taxi fares to town are around $10 USD.

Transportation in La Paz

The city is relatively small, so it’s easy to get around on foot. Other options for traveling a bit further include buses, taxis, tours, and collectivos—large vans that transport a group of people heading in the same direction. Taxis are readily available throughout the area, and bike rentals can be found near the malecón waterfront boardwalk.

Shopping Near the La Paz Cruise Port

In this walkable city, you will find many opportunities to purchase mementos to remind you of your Baja California cruise. Peruse one of the numerous art galleries for art by local artists. Pick up some Mexican coffee or chocolate for family back home. Colorful Talavera pottery is another great choice. And of course, take home authentic tequila to sip with friends as you tell them about your trip.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Mexico is the Mexican peso. Carry a little bit of cash for tips, minor purchases, or taxis while you’re in La Paz. You’ll find ATMs are plentiful, and credit cards are recommended for purchases at boutiques or more expensive shops. U.S. dollars (USD) are also accepted in many establishments throughout La Paz. A tip of 10%-20% is appropriate for tour guides and in restaurants. In bars and lounges, the customary tip is $1 a drink.

The CDC issues a report about infections from stem-cell treatments in Mexico

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a report about three cases of infections apparently linked to stem-cell treatments American patients received in Mexico

MEXICO CITY -- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a report Thursday about three cases of infections apparently linked to stem-cell treatments American patients received in Mexico .

The CDC issued the report Thursday on infections of Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM), which it described as “difficult-to-treat” and “intrinsically drug-resistant” and “rapidly growing.”

All three patients detected at two Colorado hospitals remain in treatment. The infections were apparently acquired during stem-cell injections carried out at two different clinics in the Mexican border state of Baja California located 167 miles (269 km) apart.

In the past, Americans and Mexicans have been infected apparently because some doctors in Mexico were taking multiple doses of anesthetics from a single vial due to shortages or other problems, though it was not clear if that was a possible cause in the most recent outbreak reported Thursday.

The first case was reported in late 2022, in a woman who had embryonic stem-cell treatment in October 2022 for multiple sclerosis.

In spring 2023, two male patients in Colorado were found to have infections in their joints after receiving stem-cell treatments in Baja California for forms of arthritis.

The CDC report said “vigilance for similar cases and guidance for persons considering medical tourism are advised.”

In the past, local problems with the availability of morphine and fentanyl led some anesthesiologists in Mexico to acquire their own supplies, carry the vials around with them, and administer multiple doses from a single vial to conserve their supply.

In 2022, anesthetics contaminated by those practices caused a meningitis outbreak in the northern state of Durango that killed about three dozen people, many of whom were pregnant women given epidurals. Several Americans died because of a similar outbreak after having surgery at clinics in the Mexican border city of Matamoros in 2023.

More details of the investigation were revealed during the 40-minute hearing. The key witness is the suspect’s girlfriend, who told investigators that the suspect said he committed the crime for the tires on the Chevrolet pickup that the victims were traveling in. She was not present for the hearing Wednesday, but the judge read her statements in court.

While the trio was camping in a remote area in Punta San José in Santo Tomás — south of Ensenada — they were ambushed in a robbery by the suspect— nicknamed “El Kekas” — and others, whose identities are still unknown, according to investigators.

Prosecutors said Sunday the victims were shot in the head while resisting the robbery.

The victims were supposed to check into an Airbnb in Rosarito. When their family and friends did not hear from them, one of the victim’s concerned relatives drove to the campsite, as he knew there was no cellphone signal there, according to investigators. He found burned tents and two water containers with the logo of the company where one of the victims worked.

At the scene, authorities found evidence such as blood stains, drag marks, a dental piece and a shell casing, leading them to believe that the group was attacked.

The suspect’s girlfriend, 23, was detained last week by Ensenada police because she was in possession of a cellphone believed to belong to one of the victims.

When questioned by authorities, she said that her partner left Saturday night in her Ford Ranger pickup and returned with the victims’ vehicle.

According to one interview she had with investigators, the suspect said he had “f—ed up three gringos,” meaning that he had killed them, the judge said. When the woman asked him about it, the suspect said it was because “they had a lot of money, devices and the pickup.”

The woman said she was scared because her boyfriend is a violent person. Later, the suspect allegedly told her he was going to “get rid of the pickup to Santo Tomás.” The vehicle was later found burned without tires in the area.

He allegedly returned with four tires. “Look what I brought you,” he told her, she said.

Prosecutors found a gun, which was determined to have been used recently, inside the Ranger that was allegedly used by the assailants. Prosecutors believe that more people are involved in the crime.

After a search, the victims’ remains were found inside a 15-meter-deep well located on a remote and difficult-to-access oceanfront lot about 4 miles from where the victims had camped.

A fourth body, not related to the investigation and likely dumped there weeks earlier, was also found at the bottom of the well. Mexican authorities said Wednesday that the body has not yet been identified although they are investigating if it belongs to someone connected to the property.

After reviewing the evidence, the judge ordered that the suspect remain in custody for at least the next six months to continue with the investigation.

“I will ensure that, as in all cases of violence, the full weight of the law is applied and that there is no impunity,” Baja California Gov. Marina del Pilar Ávila said in a statement Wednesday. “We have also received confirmation that the investigation is still ongoing to establish the facts, get to the truth and punish the other alleged perpetrators of this heinous crime.”

Prosecutors left the courthouse without further comment, saying that the Baja California attorney general would later discuss the case. The suspect’s public defenders could not be reached for comment.

Debra Robinson walks with her husband, Martin, at Ocean Beach

On Tuesday, the parents of the brothers spoke about the tragedy in Ocean Beach, at one of Callum’s favorite surf spots.

“Our hearts are broken and the world has become a darker place for us,” said Debra Robinson, her husband at her side. “We also mourned the loss of Carter Rhoad, a close friend. They were young men enjoying their passion of surfing together.”

She said Callum considered the U.S. “his second home.” His brother Jake was a “happy, gentle and compassionate soul,” she added.

“Now it’s time to bring them home to family and friends, and the ocean waves in Australia.”
