Thinking about taking a train trip this year? Riding the rails is not only a comfortable way for families to travel, but it lets you appreciate landscapes very differently than from the inside of a car.

According to bookings by Vacations By Rail , the largest provider of global rail vacations, these are the most popular train destinations in the United States and Canada .

Grand Canyon

Whether you begin in Chicago, Los Angeles or another place, the most popular North American train destination is the Grand Canyon , from the vast, panoramic views of the South Rim to the less-traveled, ruggedly tranquil North Rim.

  • Explore Grand Canyon Itineraries

Canadian Rockies

Across our northern border, the most popular train destination is the majestic Canadian Rockies. Itineraries exploring this region range from six to 16 days. Don't miss the famed  Rocky Mountaineer  scenic touring train to Banff .

  • Explore Canadian Rockies Itineraries

New Orleans

Arguably one of the most unique and iconic destinations in the United States, New Orleans is at the top of many rail travelers' wish lists. The list of possible departure cities includes Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and Washington DC .

USA Coast to Coast

In as few as six days, you can cross the US with Amtrak. Longer itineraries offer more stops, taking legendary rail routes to visit some of the country’s most popular destinations, including major cities and national parks.

  • Explore Coast-to-Coast US Itineraries

Trans Canada

Equally epic is the trans Canada train journey between Toronto and Vancouver. VIA Rail itineraries range from seven to 15 days, through landscapes that include tranquil lakes, dense forests, expanses of grasslands, and the majestic Canadian Rockies.

  • Explore Trans Canada Itineraries

A jewel in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle is also another destination on many rail travelers' wish lists. The list of possible departure cities includes Chicago, Los Angeles, and many other points in the US and Canada.

Eastern Canada

VIA Rail offers itineraries that let you explore popular destinations within Ontario, Quebec, and the coastal provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and New Brunswick.

  • Explore Eastern Canada Itineraries

Some of the most popular itineraries combine a train trip with a river cruise or ocean cruise to Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico or the Caribbean.

Perhaps not the most kid-friendly of destinations, Reno is among the top choices for rail travelers.

This has been the tour I dreamt of doing. Along the route, the Rocky Mountaineer was the best in service! They know how to wow the client and are good at it. I have glowing accolades for them. Everything in Alberta was amazing. Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff ... all those stops were incredible. We will arrive home on Saturday at about 3 pm. While there’s no place like home, our journey with Canada Rail Vacations was where it all began in September 2017. Thank you Martin, for operating a tour company that fit our needs....and then some. You gave us options to customize this trip to meet our wishes. Thanks to your staff who know their stuff and coddled me along the way, especially Spencer. And a huge shout out to our Tour Guide Julian. Absolutely knowledgeable about the routes we took and of the trains going through the spiral tunnels. Julian really made those four days of private tours so worth it for us. You have in us four happy clients who will now recommend Canada Rail Vacations to others, plus we have amazing memories. Thanks Martin! Lori, Brian, Ruby and Rudy, Virginia, USA (The Canadian Adventurer)
We just returned home from our recent trans-Canada train adventure and wanted to pass along our thoughts on the holiday. We arrived in Vancouver and stayed at the Fairmont, which was lovely. All of the Fairmont accommodations were outstanding. The Rocky Mountaineer was exceptional! The aesthetic, the staff, the food... everything was amazing. The staff in particular on the train were outstanding, I was so touched, as a vegan they went out of their way to accommodate me and went so far above and beyond (I never would imagine that level of service!). We were also so pleasantly surprised by the Delta Kamloops, our room was gorgeous and the location was great. Of course, the scenery in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper was incredible, and we so often found ourselves speechless. Both of our tours in Banff and Lake Louise with Julian were outstanding. He was so knowledgeable and kept us entertained every moment of the tour! All in all, an incredible experience from booking to the actual trip. Thank you for a memorable holiday! Stephanie, Hovan & Doris K., Toronto, Canada (The Canadian Adventurer)
Now safely back in Cyprus and settled in again after a great holiday with you in August. Big thanks to Canada Rail Vacations for leaving the excellent wine at the Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver, it certainly dampened down the trail dust! Shame you couldn't join us to drink it! You have a great team from the ladies who sorted us out before we left the hotels in Vancouver and Banff, to the staff waving us off and those welcoming us at each stop. The entire trip was memorable on so many levels, but an understated highlight for me was standing at the water's edge of Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, and gazing in wonder at the Walcott Quarry/Burgess Shale! I read about and studied the fossils but to see it in real life was awesome! Anthony, Cyprus (Rockies Circle Essentials)
Now that my wife and I have rested after our very enjoyable tour of Canada and are back into our normal routine we would not like the time to pass without passing on to Canada Rail staff our sincere thanks for making all the reservations and organizing the itinerary.  Suffice it to say that things went like clockwork obviously due in large part to the experienced and dedicated Canada Rail Vacations staff. We will happily refer you to any of our friends and acquaintances who are considering travelling in Canada and will look to you next time we choose to travel in Canada. Many thanks to all! Doug & Norma L, Farrer, Australia (The Canadian Trip of a Lifetime)
Thanks for helping make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience for my daughter and myself. We had many planned, and unplanned, adventures and have many memories. Cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff on both VIA and Rocky Mountaineer. There were some hiccups with scheduling but the graciousness of the staff was superb. Our hotels were very good and thanks for the special gift in Vancouver. We also used your suggestions for touring the city, spot on! Will most likely never tour Canada again as my husband and I toured from Toronto East, but I am recommending Canada Rail Vacations to my family and friends. Thanks again. Judith & Cameron C, Alabama, USA (The Canadian Adventurer)

#2 Travel tip: Cover more Canada on the train

For first-time visitors to Canada who want to take in as much as possible, a trans-Canada train journey is an ideal trip. Add time in terminal cities, such as Vancouver, Toronto, and Halifax to explore.

1. Daylight Train

The Rocky Mountaineer runs from April to the end of September during daylight hours. It follows this schedule to make the most of the amazing views in the Canadian Rockies. Guests are transferred to hotels for overnight stops, and do not sleep on the train.

2. Passenger Train

VIA Rail is Canada’s main passenger train. It connects the country from Vancouver to Halifax with four major train routes. It offers different classes of train cars. Business class gets lounge access, food and beverage service included, priority boarding, extra luggage and wider, comfortable seating.

3. Sleeper Train

There are two train routes in Canada which allow you to sleep on the train. The first is between Vancouver and Toronto on The Canadian. You can break up this route with stop-overs in Jasper or Winnipeg. The second route with a sleeper train is the Ocean train from Montreal to Halifax. Both sleeper train routes are available all year long. Some sleeper trains in Canada are equipped with special panoramic viewing cars to provide you with the best view of the scenery day or night.

VIA Rail’s The Canadian connects Toronto and Vancouver. It stops in Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Jasper. This route can also be travelled in reverse. This train covers a total of 2762 miles, which takes about 86 hours. Enjoy sweeping views in the Panorama car, where giant windows extend up to the ceiling. Travelling from Toronto to Vancouver, the Canadian carries you from the forests of Ontario, through the expanse of the Prairies, and past the dramatic snow-capped Rocky Mountains.

Montreal to Halifax

VIA Rail’s The Ocean train connects Montreal to Halifax. The 839-mile journey takes approximately 21 hours. It has been running since 1904 and is the oldest continuously operated named passenger train in North America. You'll first travel through the French-speaking province of Quebec. Then past a backdrop of lighthouses and seascapes in the Maritime Province of Nova Scotia. As you relax onboard, you'll see tiny communities along your route, representing French Canadian, Acadian, Celtic and English heritage.

Vancouver to the Rockies

Along with a segment of VIA Rail’s The Canadian route, The Rocky Mountaineer runs from Vancouver through the Rockies. There are three different routes to enjoy. The Rainforest to Gold Rush connects North Vancouver and Jasper, with stops in Whistler and Quesnel. The Journey through the Clouds also connects Vancouver to Jasper, but takes the Yellowhead pass, and stops in Kamloops. The First Passage to the West connects Vancouver to Banff, with a stop in Kamloops.

Canadian rockies and west coast.

Western Canada is known for its dramatic wild landscapes. This includes the mountains and glacier lakes of the Canadian Rockies. It also extends to the lush rainforests and Pacific Coastlines of British Columbia. It’s one of Canada’s most popular locations for a train vacation. Many remote areas are only accessible by rail. Spend an extra day or two exploring the city of Vancouver as well.

Across Canada

Make the journey across the country by rail. This coast-to-coast train trip connects Vancouver to Halifax, with stops in major cities, such as Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. If you only have one trip to Canada, this lets you see it all. Highlights include the Atlantic and Pacific coastlines, the Canadian Rockies, and the Prairies.

Eastern Canada and Maritimes

Along with amazing scenery, there’s lots of history and culture to explore in Eastern Canada. Visit the cities of Toronto and Montreal. Add a tour to famous places, like Niagara Falls, and the not-so-famous hidden gems, like the charming fishing towns of the Maritimes. There’s a lot to discover in eastern Canada.

North and Arctic

Taking the train to Churchill is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This community sits on the edge of Hudson Bay. It takes two days and two nights of travelling north on the rails to get there. There are no roads into this subarctic region.

The 5 Best Luxury Trains in the U.S.

See the country in style from the Grand Canyon Railway to the Rocky Mountaineer.

train trips usa and canada

For nearly 200 years, railroads have ferried passengers and freight all across the United States, transforming them from just a practical form of transportation to the pinnacle of luxury for wealthy Americans by the turn of the 20th century. But when jetliners hit the scene , rail travel languished.

These days, slow travel is making a comeback, with travelers delighting in the romantic nostalgia of elegantly furnished train cars complemented by fine dining. And while the U.S. has been, admittedly, rather slow to reclaim luxury train travel — particularly compared to the rest of the world — there are a growing number of elegant rail experiences to be found across the country. Here are five of the best experiences for luxury train travel in the U.S.

Rocky Mountaineer

In August 2021, Canadian railway company Rocky Mountaineer debuted its first-ever U.S. route, Rockies to Red Rocks . It's a long-in-the-making two-day journey between Denver and Moab, Utah, which includes an overnight stay in Glenwood Springs, Colorado . The glass-domed cars offer passengers exceptional views of the mountains, canyons, rivers, and hoodoos along the journey. Passengers enjoy multi-course meals, either in their seats or in a designated dining room, depending on ticket class. For those who book the higher class of service, SilverLeaf Plus , there's a lounge car with a bar and an exclusive outdoor observation deck.

The Grand Canyon Railway

The Grand Canyon is a must-visit destination, so why not arrive in style? Instead of sitting in traffic to enter the national park, take the Grand Canyon Railway for a leisurely adventure. The train departs from the depot in Williams, Arizona, some 60 miles south of the canyon itself, then travels for two-and-a-half hours through the desert to reach Grand Canyon Village, right next to the South Rim. For the most luxurious experience, be sure to book the Luxury Parlor or Luxury Dome class of service — the adults-only cars have private bars and open-air platforms.

Napa Valley Wine Train

Since 1864, the Napa Valley Wine Train has been carrying oenophiles through the eponymous California wine region . Though it originally traveled between Vallejo and Calistoga, the train now makes a three-hour, round-trip journey between downtown Napa and St. Helena. There are a few different itineraries ; most include a multi-course gourmet meal served in sophisticated historic railway cars, and some rides include stops and tastings at various wineries. The most popular car on the train is the Vista Dome , a Pullman from 1952, where you'll dine in a glass-domed car with nearly uninterrupted vineyard views.

Alaska Railroad

Connecting Seward and Fairbanks via 470 miles of track, the Alaska Railroad provides scenic excursions through the state . Book the GoldStar Service for a more upscale experience — it's offered onboard the Denali Star train, a 12-hour itinerary connecting Anchorage and Fairbanks, and the Coastal Classic Train, which connects Anchorage and Seward. The service provides guests with spacious seats in a domed car, access to an outdoor viewing platform, meals in the dining car, and access to a private bar.

Strasburg Railroad

A ride on Pennsylvania's Strasburg Railroad might not be long — each journey lasts only 45 minutes. The railroad itself, however, has a long history. In fact, it's the oldest continuously operating railroad in the country, founded in 1832. For a luxurious little joy ride, book one of the historic first-class cars , which includes Marian (the private-hire President's Car); the Parlor Car, which has tables and sofas; or one of the two Lounge Cars, which are outfitted with velvet-upholstered captain's chairs. Snacks and beverages are available during each ride, but there's also a special wine-and-cheese experience for adults on select Friday and Saturday evenings.

Canada charts path for high-speed trains, but obstacles loom

Commuters pass by a map of VIA Rail’s transit lines at Union Station in Toronto on May 5. Sammy Kogan/The Globe and Mail

Via Rail Train 62 pulled out of Toronto’s Union Station at 8:32 a.m., rolling east through the sprawl and Lake Ontario’s north shore on the way to Montreal. Its first three stops were on time, but by Belleville, Ont., two hours into the five-hour-and-10-minute journey, Train 62 was a half-hour late.

The journey was delayed by problems with the signals on the tracks, which, like most of the those used by Via, are owned by Canadian National Railway Co. CNR-T

Train 62 and more than seven others that day in early April were moved onto side tracks that have lower speed limits, said Karl Helou, a spokesman for Canada’s national passenger railway. “It is unfortunately not uncommon for such signalling issues to arise on railway infrastructure that is not owned by Via Rail,” Mr. Helou said.

On this day, a spring snowstorm put the signals on the fritz. Other days, Via’s passenger trains must move over to let a freight train pass. CN owns most of the tracks Via travels in Ontario and elsewhere, and has priority as the host railway. This hampers Via’s chances of meeting its schedule and weighs down Via’s on-time performance. Just 59 per cent of Via’s trains were on time in 2023, a score that inconveniences passengers and erodes trust in the government-owned rail service.

Martin Imbleau has a solution: passenger trains that mostly run on their own electric tracks in the corridor between Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City, routes that account for 96 per cent of Via’s 4.1 million passengers a year. This, says the chief executive officer of Crown corporation Via HFR (High Frequency Rail), will let the trains run faster and more often, supporting growth in a swath of the country with much of the population and economic activity.

“ Via Rail is doing a fantastic job, but they don’t own the tracks,” Mr. Imbleau says. “And passenger trains should not be slowing down the commodity trains either in that corridor because that would be detrimental to the economy. So having dedicated passenger tracks is the way to go. That’s how it’s done in basically everywhere in the world except [in Canada].”

The government formed Via HFR in 2022 as an independent subsidiary of Via Rail, and gave it the mandate to develop and implement high-frequency passenger rail service in the 1,000-kilometre corridor.

The government would retain ownership of the land and infrastructure, but the private sector would be the operator and part owner.

Via HFR asked each of three competing groups to provide two proposals each: one that would run trains at 200 kilometres an hour; and a second project in which the trains are much faster. This is in line with the high-speed trains in Europe, Japan and elsewhere, but is far more costly.

On top of costs – estimated at several billion dollars for either project – hurdles include the task of buying the railway’s rights-of-way, and electrifying the system.

“We need this because we need to increase the productivity. We need this because the population is growing and we need this because it’s a corridor with 60 per cent of the population and 40 per cent of the GDP ,” Mr. Imbleau said.

But it won’t happen soon, and it will cost billions. Nor is it a new notion – various plans for a faster passenger rail service have been tossed round for decades – but it’s one that is set to mark key deadlines. Proposals from three private consortiums to build and run the system are due in the summer, and in the fall the government will select a group with which to work.

Each consortium includes several companies, Canadian and foreign, including CDPQ Infra, AtkinsRéalis, Bechtel Corp. and Kilmer Group.

High-speed rail – or high frequency in its latest incarnation – has been a dream of Canadian governments for decades. Shortening the travelling time between cities would reduce the need for carbon-belching cars and planes, and allow business people and tourists to speed to their destinations in comfort and without the hassles of airport waits or road congestion.

Via Rail ridership jumped last year, but fell short of 2019 levels as earnings losses mount

For Jacques Roy, a professor at HEC Montreal, Via HFR’s ambitions seem familiar. Prof. Roy studied the idea in 1994-95 on behalf of the Quebec government, which was evaluating a similar proposal from the Chrétien government. Then, as now, a high-speed and a more traditional passenger train were under consideration.

“Everybody was really excited about this project, but the business case was not really positive – not enough users,” Prof. Roy said in an interview.

Despite enthusiasm for the project, it never happened, in part because of the price tag of as much as $18-billion. Although there was interest from business travellers, people using the train for leisure were harder to attract, he said, especially at the elevated fares the system would require.

Densely populated Europe is better suited than Canada to higher-speed trains. That’s because the convenience of quick rail travel spurs people to take the train, fostering a market called induced travel.

“In Europe, they can justify high-speed trains, but a lot of the ridership comes from what we call induced traffic, that is, people who would not travel otherwise,” Prof. Roy said. “But because you have high-speed trains they are more inclined to visit friends and relatives. And that was fine with Paris to Lyon, but I was never convinced that you will get that much induced traffic between Montreal and Toronto.”

Barry Prentice, a transportation professor at the University of Manitoba, says the prevalence of car ownership has suppressed demand for passenger trains, at the consumer and government levels. However, road congestion, a lack of intercity buses, environmental concerns and ever-lengthening predeparture times at airports all stack up in favour of faster passenger rail services. This is especially true if the trains could link city centres, and could travel between Montreal and Toronto in three or four hours, he said.

“Part of the benefit of the train is simply that: downtown to downtown,” Prof. Prentice said. “Speed matters, and if you don’t have a service that is fast enough then it’s always a loser versus the competition, which is a car or a plane.”

He said he recently travelled on Mexico’s Tren Maya, a new railway that traverses the Yucatan Peninsula on the country’s southeastern tip at speeds of up to 160 kilometres an hour. The system, partly completed and built for the government by a consortium that includes Bombardier Inc. BBD-B-T and Alstom SA, has seen its budget balloon to about US$20-billion for 1,500 kilometres.

For Mr. Imbleau, it is too soon to talk about budgets. Much of that will depend on the project’s ambitions – speeds of 200 km/h or as much as 300 km/h. Either target will require assembling large swaths of land, including a new route that runs through Peterborough, Ont., on the way to Ottawa. But either plan will be faster than the current service, Mr. Imbleau says, by reducing the delays, stops and reliability issues that plague the current system. This rapidity will be the draw, he says. He tosses out potential travel times between Toronto and Montreal of three or 3½ hours – or less – compared with 5½ these days.

“That really changes the behaviour of how people commute in that corridor,” he says. “We can’t simply add highways and more cars because it doesn’t last, and then you get stuck in congestion anyway.”
