You can use a ride-sharing app like Uber, or take an auto rickshaw, yes, but because there’s so much traffic, those rides can take forever , which is why taking the Delhi Metro may be your best bet. So here’s everything you need to know about the Indian capital’s public transit system:

A Brief History

For starters, the metro system in Delhi is still relatively new; it opened in December 2002. One of the most important facts about it is that it’s the first railway system in the entire world to get a United Nations certification for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is huge for Delhi, and, as a result, locals are very proud of their metro.

The metro has eight main lines, divided by colour – red, yellow, blue, green, violet, magenta, and pink – plus an eighth one, the orange line, that goes directly to the airport. There are around 184 metro stations in total, both underground and above ground – but they’re all air-conditioned. That air conditioning factor certainly isn’t as big a deal as the United Nations certification, but it’s definitely up there, as Delhi heat is no joke.

As you may expect from such a sprawling railway system, there are a couple of key rules and guidelines that you should know before you go:

1. To buy a ticket, which is either a card or a token, you have to go to the ticket counter at every station. Generally speaking, tokens are best for one-way trips, and cards are better if you are a frequent traveller. You can also purchase a Special Tourist Card, which gives you an unlimited number of rides for a limited amount of days. A one-day Tourist Card is 200 rupees (150 rupees + 50 rupees for the card itself, though the card is refundable), and a three-day Tourist Card is 500 rupees (450 rupees + 50 rupees for the card itself, which, again, is refundable).

2. The fare is not a set rate. Rather, it’s based on where you’re going. Unlike cities like New York, which have a set rate for a subway ride no matter where you’re going, the Delhi Metro charges you based on your distance travelled. 3. If possible, try to avoid peak travel times, as the metro gets very, very crowded. Locals say that peak travel time in the morning is anywhere from 9 am to 12 pm, and in the evening, it’s anytime from 6 pm to 8 pm. Of course, avoiding the metro during these times may not be possible, so if that’s the case, just be prepared to be squished – and keep an eye on your bag.

4. Each train has about six to eight cars, one of which is reserved only for women. Although the metro system was opened in 2002, the women’s-only car only opened in 2010, as a response to sexual harassment complaints. Not surprisingly, though, as is often the case with gender-related initiatives, there is a bit of a debate in Delhi about the existence of the women’s-only car. Contrarians argue that it simply reinforces gender roles, whereas those in favour of the car say it’s a nice place to breathe and know that you will not be bothered by men. No matter where you stand on the debate, it’s good to know that there is one in the first place.

5. Your bag will be scanned before you board – and you can’t board at certain stations if your bag weighs more than 15 kilograms. Every metro station has an X-Ray scanning machine to check your bag before you board. And now, as of February 2018, you are not even allowed [italics] to board the Delhi Metro at more than 35 select stations if your bag weighs more than 15 kilograms. This rule has actually been in place since the metro opened, but it’s only now that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is actually enforcing it.

6. You aren’t allowed to eat on the train. That said, many, though not all, Delhi Metro stations have kiosks where you can buy coffee, tea, and local snacks. Some of the stations even have entire food courts filled with popular local and international chains where you can buy full meals. (Hot tip: Go for local chains like Khan Chacha and Cafe Coffee Day, and pass on the international chains like Domino’s… because you can do better than that.)

Using the Delhi Metro to Get to Your Hotel from the Airport

When the Delhi Metro first opened, there wasn’t a line that went directly to the airport, but all of that changed when the Orange Line – i.e. the line to the airport – opened in February 2011. Both locals and travellers alike really love the addition, because it cuts the journey down from more than an hour to around 20 minutes (give or take). The Orange Line runs from Terminal 3 and the new AeroCity hospitality precinct to New Delhi Metro Station (which is opposite the New Delhi Railway Station). Trains run nearly every 10 minutes, from around 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. every day, and the trip costs 60 rupees.

And that’s not all. In May 2018, the DMRC opened a new magenta line that goes to the airport too. While it’s not an express train like the Orange Line, it still gives you even more airport-to-hotel options. The magenta line has 16 stations total – many of which interchange with other lines – and operates from Terminal 1.

The Best Delhi Metro Stations for Sightseeing

One of the coolest parts about taking the Delhi Metro is that the metro itself is a sight to be seen. That said, you can also use it to get to other awesome tourist attractions too. Here are five solid stations that will place you right in the middle of the attraction action:

1. Chandni Chowk, on the yellow line This brings you to Old Delhi, which is total chaos but a must-see. You can walk to the Red Fort from here too. There’s tons of street food around as well, so be sure to sample some – and don’t miss Karim’s .

2. Rajiv Chowk, on the yellow and blue lines When you get off at this station, you’ll be close to Connaught Place, the commercial business and financial hub of Delhi that has heaps of markets and stalls. This is where you go to get all of the Indian trinkets you want.

3. Hauz Khas, on the yellow line Hauz Khas village is the hipster neighbourhood of Delhi. Expect to drink artisanal beer and quality coffee, visit artsy clothing and jewellery boutiques, and stroll through colourful, graffiti-covered alleyways.

4. Nehru Place, on the violet line It’s right by Lotus Temple, which is a house of worship constructed in the shape of a flower that’s one of the most popular attractions in Delhi.

5. Central Secretariat, on the yellow and violet lines Get off here to be close to the Indira Gandhi Memorial, Lodhi Garden, India Gate, the Parliament House, and more.

Want to take the train for transportation in Delhi ? It's one of the cheapest and most convenient ways of getting around the city. Here's what you need to know about train travel on Delhi's Metro train network.

Overview of the Delhi Metro

Delhi has an excellent, air-conditioned train network called the Metro. It started operating in December 2002 and provides connectivity to Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Bahadurgarh, and Ballabhgarh. Currently, the network has eight regular lines (Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Violet, Pink, Magenta and Gray) plus the Airport Express line (Orange). There are 285 stations, which are a mix of underground, ground level, and elevated stations. ​​

The Metro's development is being executed in phases spread out over 20 years, with each phase taking 3-5 years. When finished, it will surpass the London Underground in length.

The Metro network was launched with the Red Line, which joins northeast Delhi and northwest Delhi. Phase I was completed in 2006, and Phase II in 2011. Phase III, with an additional three new lines (Pink, Magenta, and Gray) including two ring lines, finally became fully operational by the end of 2019 after long delays. Construction on the final fourth phase, with six new radial lines to outlying areas, commenced at the end of 2019 and is expected to be completed by 2025.

What's notable about the Delhi Metro is that it's the world's first railway system to get United Nations certification for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Metro Tickets, Timetable, and Security

• Trains on the five regular lines run from about 5.30 a.m. until 11.30 p.m. A listing of last train departures is available on the Delhi Metro Rail website.
• The frequency of trains ranges from every couple of minutes during peak hours, up to 10 minutes at other times.
• This journey planner provides details of fares and routes.
• The Metro operates on an automated ticketing system. Tickets (which are cards or tokens) can be purchased from ticket counters at stations.
• The minimum fare is 10 rupees and the maximum fare is 60 rupees.
• Special Tourist Cards are available for unlimited travel over short periods on all lines except for the Airport Express Line. The cost is 200 rupees for one day, and 500 rupees for three days. A 50 rupee deposit is also payable, as cards are required to be returned at the end of travel.
• The first carriage of every Metro train is reserved for women.
• Security is tight, so be prepared to have your bags checked and body scanned at ticket gates.

Delhi Airport Metro Express

For travel to and from Delhi airport , there's a special Airport Metro Express Line that covers the distance between New Delhi and the airport in under 20 minutes (as opposed to the usual hour or more travel time). It's also possible to check your baggage in before you board the train if you're flying with one of the full-service airlines (Jet Airways, Air India, and Vistara).

Using the Delhi Metro for Sightseeing

If you're on a budget, the Metro is an inexpensive way of getting around to see Delhi's sights. The Yellow Line, which runs from north to south, covers many of the top attractions. It's particularly handy for those who want to stay in classy south Delhi, away from the hustle and bustle, but still want to explore the old parts of the city in the north. 

Important stations on the Yellow Line, in order from north to south, and their places of interest include:

• Chandni Chowk -- chaotic Old Delhi, the Red Fort, Juma Masjid, bazaars, and street food .
• Rajiv Chowk -- Connaught Place and Janpath in New Delhi's commercial district.
• Central Secretariat -- the heart of imperial Delhi on Rajpath, India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhawan, Purana Qila, National Gallery of Modern Art, and numerous museums.
• Race Course -- Gandhi Smriti Museum and Indira Gandhi Memorial.
• Jorbagh -- Safdarjung's Tomb and Lodhi Gardens.
• INA -- Dilli Haat , with handicraft stalls from across India.
• Hauz Khas -- Delhi's hip urban village, crammed with cafes, bars, and boutiques.
• Qutab Minar -- one of Delhi's most popular historical monuments, and the Garden of Five Senses.

Other important stations on other lines are Khan Market for shopping (east of Central Secretariat on the Violet Line), and Akshardham (on the Blue Line).

Tourists should also note that the special Heritage Line (which is an extension of the Violet line and connects Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate) was opened in May 2017. This underground line has three stations that provide direct access to Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid and the Red Fort in Old Delhi. Plus, the Kashmere Gate station provides an interchange between the Violet, Red, and Yellow lines.

Delhi Metro: Tokens, Cards Not Needed For Travel Anymore!

Travelling Delhi Metro just got easier as it rolls out the National Common Mobility Card. This card will allow passengers to travel without tokens and cards. Passengers will be able to travel using QR tickets, account-based tickets, and near-field communication (NFC).  The card will also make travel by the Delhi Metro and bus services along the Airport Express Line a seamless experience. 

Places To Use The NCMC Card

But are you wondering what precisely the NCMC card is? It is an automatic fare collection system that you can use on your smartphone to pay for metro, bus and suburban railways services and enter or exit a metro station. You can use this mobility NCMC card in the following places too:

• Parking charges
• Retail shopping
• Withdraw money

Banks mandated have been directed to make all new debit cards NCMC-compliant. 

Delhi Gets India’s First Ever Driverless Trains

Delhi Metro has also touched a significant milestone, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagging off India’s first-ever fully-automated driverless train operations. PM Modi inaugurated the driverless operations on the Magenta Line of Delhi Metro on December 28, 2020, via a video conferencing. The Magenta Line is around 37 kilometres long and connects Janakpuri West and Botanical Garden. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also attended the inauguration programme. The authorities are planning to launch driverless operations on Delhi Metro’s Pink Line too by the mid of 2021. After the launch of operations in the Pink Line, Delhi Metro will have around 94 kilometres of driverless network. Delhi Metro has also been providing real-time updates on the waiting time at busy stations. 

The Driverless Trains Have 6 Coaches

According to a Times Now report, the government has said in an official statement that the driverless trains will “herald a new era of travelling with comfort and enhanced mobility”. The statement added, “The driverless trains will be fully automated which will require minimum human intervention and will eliminate the possibilities of human errors. Delhi Metro has been a pioneer in introducing technology-driven solutions for passenger comfort and this is another step in the same direction.” These driverless trains have a total of six coaches. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has tweeted, “Happy Delhiites! From today onwards, automatic-driven metro trains started in Delhi Metro without a driver. Today your ‘Delhi Metro’ has been included in selected cities of the world. Our Delhi is developing rapidly.”

Delhi Metro launches new smart card for ‘contactless travel’

The new smart card will enable the commuters to recharge it automatically at automatic fare collection (afc) gates of metro stations..

Out of service for over 4 months now due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is gearing up to make travel safer when the metro services resume in the capital city. In this view, the DMRC Wednesday launched a new type of smart card having an auto top-up feature.

The smart card will enable the commuters to recharge it automatically at Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates of metro stations, whenever services resume. The app will auto top-up the card whenever its value goes below Rs 100 and will recharge it with Rs 200 at the AFC entry gate itself.

This new smart card is available for customers through ‘Autope’ app which is specially developed for this purpose. Autope will auto-debit the topped up value from customer’s linked card/bank account the next working day, a DMRC statement said.

To avail the services of this smart card, users will be required to register by downloading the ‘Autope’ app or register at autope.in and link their bank/credit card/UPI account to the card as a one-time exercise. A nominal fee (maximum of 1%) will be charged as a convenience fee from the customer for each transaction.

People already having a Delhi Metro travel card can also get the auto top-up feature enabled by registering through the Autope app. After three days of registration, the existing card holders will need to visit the Customer Care Centre of any of the Metro stations to get their smart cards activated.

“This new measure will eliminate the need for queuing up at the metro stations to recharge the smart card. Generally, even in case of online recharges, the card needs to be presented to Add Value Machines (AVMs) for the store value to get validated. ‘Autope’ eliminates the AVM layer as well,” the statement said.

However, irrespective of the new card, the existing Smart Cards owned by the commuters will continue to remain valid in the same manner as they used to be so far.

On the launch of this new service, Dr Mangu Singh, Managing Director, DMRC said, “This initiative is in line with the DMRC’s commitment towards supporting the digital drive to promote cashless transactions among the Delhi Metro commuters. This new feature/card empowers a commuter to get his/her smart card auto topped up at AFC Gates across the network which will help him/her to have seamless travel without worrying about top-up from time to time”.

Validity: One Year from the date of purchase or one year from the date of recharge whichever is later.

Renewal: No extra charge. Facility to check balance on Card: Ticket Reading Machines at all Metro Stations.

Tourist Card: For unlimited travel over short periods. There are two kinds of cards - 1 day and 3 day.

Token: Minimum value is Rs. 8/- and maximum value is Rs. 30/-.

The Delhi Metro is a rapid transit system serving Delhi and its surrounding areas, including Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad. It is the busiest metro system by ridership and the largest in India. The Delhi Metro has a network of 288 stations spread over 392 kilometers of route.

The Delhi Metro, a symbol of modern infrastructure and public transportation in India’s capital, Delhi, has significantly eased the city’s traffic congestion and changed the way its residents commute. Understanding the Delhi Metro Ticketing System

The Delhi Metro offers various ticketing options to cater to the diverse needs of its passengers. The system is designed to be accessible and user-friendly, making it convenient for everyone, including tourists, daily commuters, and occasional travelers.

• Tokens: The most common way to access the Delhi Metro is by using tokens. Tokens are small, plastic coins that passengers purchase at the metro station before entering. They come with a magnetic strip containing information about the fare and validity. Passengers insert the token at the entry gate to enter the system and then return it at the exit gate while exiting the station. The fare is automatically deducted from the token upon exit.
• Smart Cards: Delhi Metro smart cards are a more convenient option for regular commuters. These contactless cards can be purchased at metro stations and can be recharged as needed. Smart cards offer various benefits, including discounts on fares and the convenience of not having to stand in line to buy a token for each journey. Additionally, they are more eco-friendly as they reduce the use of paper tokens.To obtain a smart card, passengers need to fill out an application form and provide a passport-size photograph. The card can then be recharged at the metro station or online. Smart card users can also avail of automatic recharge facilities, ensuring that their card always has sufficient balance for their journeys.
• Tourist Cards: The Delhi Metro offers tourist cards designed specifically for tourists and visitors. These cards come with a fixed amount, providing unlimited travel within a certain time frame (usually one day or three days). They offer a cost-effective way for tourists to explore the city while using the metro. Tourist cards can be purchased at the metro station or online, making them convenient for travelers arriving in Delhi.

TICKET AND FARE INFORMATION

• One for each customer and a single journey.
• Maximum 6 to a customer.
• Entry is permitted from the token purchase station.
• Souvenir Token is of Rs 4/- only.
• Store Value Card Rs 150/-. (Security Deposit Rs 50/- and Electronic value Rs 100/-)
• Validity: 10 years from the last add value.
• Max. stored value amount is Rs 3,000/-.
• A flat Rs 20/- will be charged for Travel in Rapid Metro from the Delhi Metro System.
• One customer can travel on one Store Value Card.
• Take the receipt & check the display for every transaction.

Tourist Card

• Tour 1 @ Rs 200/-. (Security Deposit Rs 50/- and Electronic value Rs 150/-) – Validity: Tour 1 @ 1 Business Day.
• Max stored value amount is
• Tour 3 Rs 500/-. (Security Deposit Rs 50/- and Electronic value Rs 450/-) – Validity: Tour 3 @ 3 Business Days.
• Not valid for travel on the Airport Express Line.

Benefits of Smart Card

• Saves Money
• Avoid Queue
• 10% Discount on every journey made.
• Additional 10% (total 20%) Discount on every journey made during off-peak hours” (Except Sundays and National Holidays).
• Entry by Smart Card from start of Revenue Services to 07:59 hrs: from 12:00 hrs to 1659 hrs: from 21:00 hrs to Last Revenue Services.
• No discount on Entry/Exit from the same station and on surcharge.

Refund Rules (Smart Card/Token)

• Electronic value is non-refundable.
• Readable & Physically OK: Only the Security Deposit shall be refunded after the deduction of processing charge of 20/- and negative electronic value (if any).
• Unreadable & Physically OK: Electronic value shall be transferred in new Smart Card.
• Commuter must obtain receipt for deposited Unreadable Smart Card.
• Unused Token can be refunded within 60 minutes of sale from issuing station only.

Smart Card Recharge through Digital Means

• WEB or Online Recharge (www.dmrcsmartcard.com)
• Ticket Vending Machine (TVM) AdV100/-theater 50/-)
• Auto Top Up” in Combo Card at AFC Gates
• Point Of Sale(POS) machine at Stations
• Using Debit Card/Credit Card/Net banking.
• Charges as applicable by the Bank shall be levied for swipe of Debit/Credit Card.

Foreign tourists can now recharge metro cards through Delhi Tourism App

Delhi tourism and transportation development corporation (dttdc) officials said that delhi tourism app will also be useful for foreign tourists and for those who are not well versed with the online modes of delhi metro recharge options or fare and route details..

Tourists can now recharge their metro smart cards from Delhi Tourism App which also contain fare and route details, officials said on Thursday.

Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) officials said that the mobile application will also be useful for foreign tourists and for those who are not well versed with the online modes of Delhi metro recharge options or fare and route details.

“We strive to give tourists from all over the world the best experience in Delhi. So with the help of Delhi Tourism App’s metro recharge feature now tourists can plan their complete journey with one app. This feature enables users to enhance their tourism experience by providing them hassle free facility of recharging their metro cards through the app while exploring Delhi’s tourist hotspots,” a senior DTTDC official told PTI, requesting anonymity.

To avail the facility, the user will have to visit ‘Travel within Delhi’ section of the app and then select ‘Metro’ and then click on the recharge tab. The app will then redirect the user to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation website for smart card recharge.

Officials said that the new feature is a very useful as many foreign tourists who come to visit Delhi or even the Indian tourists from other cities are not aware of Delhi’s public transport system and its ticketing and recharge facility.

"So if they download Delhi Tourism App they will not have to stand in queue or go through the hassle of searching other online recharge options,” the official added.

Delhi Tourism Department's mobile application was launched by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on World Tourism Day on September 27 last year. 'Dekho Meri Dilli' is the tagline of the app.

The app provides many user friendly features to make tourism and travel experience in Delhi a bliss as it provides all the information ranging from tourist hotspots, popular local cuisines and market places to heritage walks through a single click, the officials said.

They said the app is unique in nature as small audio and video files of a particular tourist destination have also been embedded to give the traveller a sneak peek into the tourist spot.

It allows tourists to see key highlights of any monument or other tourist location without even going there.

State Bank of India Launches Its First Travel Credit Card – India Report

While there are several co-branded credit cards offered by airlines and hotels, banks releasing travel-focused core credit cards indicates a shift in consumer preference and the rising popularity of travel credit cards in India.

India’s largest bank State Bank of India (SBI) has launched its first-ever travel focused credit card. ‘SBI Card MILES’ has been launched in three variants to cater to different types of travelers, from beginners to frequent flyers. 

“Indian travelers are large global spenders and with increased and more robust travel plans, consumers are looking for curated benefits to enhance their travel experiences,” said Abhijit Chakravorty, CEO of SBI Card. 

Rise of travel credit cards in India: Travel credit cards are rising in popularity in India. Card services company Visa in its report released in December 2023, stated that 95% of Indian travelers select credit cards for international travel, driven by features such as travel miles, cashback, rewards, and high limits on spending. Travel credit cards were the fastest growing category in 2023, with a year-on-year demand increase of 27%, according to a report by fintech platform ZET. 

Several brands are coming up with travel credit cards. Last year, Marriott launched India’s first-ever co-branded hotel credit card in collaboration with HDFC Bank. SBI also has seven co-branded travel credit cards including those with railway company IRCTC, Air India, and online travel platform Yatra. IndiGo has partnered with Kotak and HDFC Bank for co-branded credit cards, while online travel company EaseMyTrip has a co-branded card with Standard Chartered. 

Mahindra Holidays Records Highest-Ever Annual Performance in 2023-24

Mahindra Holiday and Resorts has recorded its highest-ever annual performance in financial year 2023-24. It recorded a 12% year-on-year increase in total income, which stood at INR 14.2 billion ($171 million). During the year, the company added nearly 400 keys to its inventory, with resorts in locations such as Sikkim, Assam, Turkey, Thailand, and Georgia. 

The group has also reached a member base of nearly 300,000 after adding more than 20,000 members in the 2023-24 fiscal year. 

Mahindra Holidays and Resorts has set a target to double its inventory from the current over 5,000 rooms to 10,000 rooms by 2030. For this, it is planning to invest up to INR 45 billion ($539 million) over the next three to four years.

IHG Hotels to Double Presence in India in 5 Years

IHG Hotels and Resorts is planning to double its portfolio of operational hotels in India to 100 properties in the next five years. In 2023, IHG launched its voco brand in India, and signed hotels across luxury, premium, midscale, and upper midscale segments. In a statement, the company said that it is targeting high-growth secondary markets such as Amritsar, Lucknow, Kasauli, and Katra. 

IHG’s India, Middle East and Africa managing director Haitham Mattar said, “India’s hospitality sector is experiencing a dynamic transformation, driven by a confluence of factors including increased disposable income, a growing middle class with a taste for travel, and the development of new tourist destinations.”

The company also signed an agreement to debut the InterContinental in the southern state of Telangana. The 300-key InterContinental Hyderabad Neopolis is scheduled to open in 2029. 

ITC Hotels Forays Overseas With ITC Ratnadipa in Colombo

ITC Hotels has entered the international market with the opening of its first property outside India. ITC Ratnadipa in Colombo, Sri Lanka features 352 keys and is the biggest hotel in Sri Lanka. It also marks the biggest investment made by an Indian company in the island nation. 

The hospitality company is looking to open more international hotels, said ITC Limited chairman Sanjiv Puri. In order to diversify its hotel portfolio, ITC Hotels is looking at neighboring countries and the Middle East region as the primary target markets. It is, however, seeking to continue its expansion momentum in India, aiming to add 70 hotels in the domestic market over the next five years. 

Schengen Countries See 100% Jump in Indian Senior Citizen Indian Travelers

There has been a 100% increase in Indian senior citizen travelers to Schengen countries this year, according to insurance company Policybazaar. The company noted that there was a slight uptick in users booking travel insurance policies exceeding 45 days in April this year. This trend is further expected to rise in view of the updated Schengen visa norms. 

There is a 15% increase in travelers declaring pre-existing diseases while traveling to Europe and travelers are also selecting add-ons for their travel insurance. These add-ons include baggage loss, trip cancellation, adventure sports coverage, and pre-existing disease coverage. 

The European Commission has introduced a new visa regime for Indian nationals , which allows them longer-term, multi-entry Schengen visas based on the applicant’s travel history. With this visa, they would be able to enter 29 European countries with travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals. 

Radisson Hotel Group Signs Svelte Delhi

Radisson Hotel Group has signed Svelte Delhi as a member of its Radisson Individuals brand. The 108-key hotel adds to the company’s portfolio of more than 24 hotels in the Delhi national capital region. It is expected that the hotel will become operational by the third quarter of 2024. 

The company is expanding its presence in the country, and earlier this month, debuted its luxury lifestyle brand Radisson Collection in India . In an interview with Skift, executive vice president Elie Younes said that multiple hotels will be opened under the brand over the next five years.
