Hundreds of UAE residents were allegedly duped by a tour company, which sold non-existent dream holiday packages with stays in luxury hotels at discounted rates, said they were alerted of the scam through a bulk email. The email from an anonymous sender alerted victims about the scale and severity of the scam worth millions of dirhams. By the time the victims - mostly Indian expats from Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah - realised the fraud, culprits had made away with the loot. The office of Make My Tour in the Capital is now shut with a complaint note from the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (DED) pasted on the door. Victims have lodged police complaints, reached out to the embassy and sought legal assistance. 'They mesmerise you with deals' The trap, victims said, is laid in the malls across the country. "A pleasant sales executive is at the entrance of every mall, who invites you to fill a simple form. The next day, you receive a call saying you have won a lucky draw and need to be in their office with the family to collect the prize. They then introduce tour packages and mesmerise you. Eventually, you will sign the contract and pay through cheque or credit card. But, when you try to avail the services, it will not work," said Indhu Saravanan, who lost Dh35,000. Victims claimed the tour packages had 75 days of five-star hotel stays anywhere in the world within 25 weeks of registration. The rates were 10 to 15 per cent cheaper than any offer in the market. However, no promises were kept and dream holiday never happened. "Once a Make My Tour executive told me booking was done for a hotel in Fujairah but when we went there it wasn't. The executive told me to pay t full amount at the hotel, which would be reimbursed later. But I was duped," said Santhosh Rajamanickam, who paid Dh25,000 for a package. The scammers don't leave anybody and sold packages with up to 90 per cent discount. "They offered me a package for Dh15,000 when I didn't agree, the rates dropped. To my shock, they finally offered the same package for Dh1,750," said Mohiyadhum Mubarak. The victims, from different emirates, have formed a WhatsApp group and recently held a gathering to deliberate on the future course of action. "We want to create awareness. Our money is lost, we don't want anyone else to go through this agony," they said. Khaleej Times contacted the company but operations in Abu Dhabi have been closed down. Modus operandi of scammers Babu M.K., who alllegedly lost Dh14,000 in the tour scam, said his doubts of foul play by the Make My Tour company turned into reality when all victims received an email with details of the modus operandi. "Someone wrote to 200 or more victims informing about the fraud and that the mastermindis in Sharjah. The sender asked us to fight to get the money back. But these matters are always settled with postdated dud cheques. We have reached out to the DED, Indian Embassy and also sought legal assistance. The names of culprits we know are Amjith, Upasana, Manisha, Manoj and Vignesh. Another company - Smiles for Miles - in Dubai is now operational with the same staff who duped us. The booking form of this new company still has the same contact details of Make My Tour," alleged Babu. Karthik S., a resident of Fujairah, noted the entire operations happened in three months' time. "They would have shelled out Dh200,000 to Dh300,000 for their operations and made up to Dh2.5 million to Dh3 million. We are just a handful of the thousands who are being duped across the country." Expats in UAE lose millions of dirhams in time-share scam; company doesn't exist

  • Hundreds of holiday makers duped to the tune of millions of dirhams in a time-share scam
  • Holiday makers allegedly sold fake time-share holiday memberships by Arabian Times Travel & Tourism LLC (Arabian TTT)
  • At least 200 people are said to be victims and cheated of over Dh4 million
  • Department of Economic Development (DED) confirms  the company no longer exists

Dubai: Dubai's Department of Economic Development (DED) confirmed on Thursday that a Dubai-based company, alleged to have duped hundreds of residents to the tune of millions, no longer exists even as more victims come forward with their experiences.

Residents caught up in the alleged scam case, first reported by Gulf News in September 2018, claim that they were sold fake time-share holiday memberships by a fraudulent tour company, Arabian Times Travel & Tourism LLC (Arabian TTT).

According to contracts signed by the buyers the deal involves a life-time membership giving access to hotels and resorts in India and around the world. The fee varies from one buyer to another and is based on the number of days booked under the time-share scheme. The membership also comes with discounts to a health club in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, a coffee shop and restaurant in Ajman and an optical shop in Dubai.

It is estimated that at least 200 people lost over Dh4 million in the alleged scam. Two weeks ago, 30 victims met Gulf News  to share their plight.

Authorities respond; company no longer exists

In an email response to Gulf News on Thursday, Ahmad Al Zaabi, Director of Consumer Protection in the Department of Economic Development (DED) confirmed the company no longer exists.

“With reference to your query on Arabian Travel Tourism, Dubai, the trade license of the company mentioned has expired and the company is not operating in Dubai anymore,” the statement read.

DED’s senior official, on Thursday, further warned customers not to deal with companies whose licenses have expired as they are not allowed to conduct businesses until they renew their licenses.

Al Zaabi said consumers should communicate with legal authorities concerned for cancelling their contract or to request for a compensation / refund with the concerned company.

Dh6,000, Dh8,500, Dh16,000; victims count losses

Contract1_resources1

Indian expat Rajesh Mehta, who works as an IT manager, said he paid Dh6,000 in February 2018 for a 30-day time-share package with Arabian TTT. “More than a year on, I am yet to avail of any of their offers.

Contract-2_resources1

An Indian businessman from Dubai, Anand Jeswani, said he lost Dh8,500. “Neither are they honouring the contract nor are they refunding our money,” said a fuming Jeswani, who is calling upon authorities to do the needful to refund customers their monies.

In response to one of the complainants' emails, DED representatives said that since the matter was outside of their jurisdiction, affected consumers could resort to legal action through the Dubai Courts if they so wished.

“Taking the legal course is not an option for me as hiring a lawyer will cost me more than the money I have lost. Right now if each of us hire a lawyer to fight our case, it is not practical at all. And because there is no legal action being taken, the perpetrators are getting away scot free. How is this fair?”

Sheeba Khan Khokhar from India, said that she is contemplating taking up the matter with DED to refund her Dh16,000 she paid for a 77-day membership.

Another victim Abdul Shakoor said he tried in vain to book his holiday package. "The company did not get back to me on the package I had booked. They kept doing a back and forth with me and we got nowhere. Then they asked me to do my own booking and send them the invoice and that they will reimburse my money, which I did. But to this day I have not been reiumbursed the money. Of course I have also lost the money which I paid the company for my holiday scheme which is several thousands of dirhams, because of internal issues,” he said.

A copy of the email to the victim read: "We regret to inform you that due to non-availability, and the heavy volume of bookings as discussed, company cannot honor this time request, with in the budget of Dh300-400 including (amc 133)... You can book the holiday from your end and and submit the bills so that company will reimburse the bills with in 30-45 working days, Thanks for your cooperation, Your cooperation is highly valued..."

Modus operandi

According to Gaurav Gandhi, a victim, people are lured into sharing their contact details by setting up kiosks in malls.

“The way it goes, Arabian Travel Time & Tourism sets up kiosks in malls across Dhabi, Dubai Sharjah and Ajman. Passersby are handed a voucher and asked to fill it giving details of their email and telephone number. The victims are literally lured into filling vouchers giving details of their email and telephone number at the company’s kiosks set up in malls across the Emirates,” said Gandhi.

“Within a day the person gets a call from the tour company saying they have won a gift and they are invited to a hotel to pick it up and attend a 45-minute video session on the company. I went as well to a hotel to collect my gift and was subjected to high pressure tactics to close the time-share sale. I never thought their promises would be outright lies.”

Gandhi said during the session the holiday makers are given a brochure of the hotels under the time-share package. “They are a variety of three, four and five-star properties around the world. The Arabian TTT sales staff offer you a travel package for five, 10 or 30 years with accommodation in mostly five star properties.”

“During the session people are not allowed to use their mobile to check the company reviews. The staff play loud music in the background and do not let you discuss the package with your family or friends. The staff constantly hover around you forcing you to sign the contract. Payment is made upfront and in full,” he said.

Company offices closed

Gandhi said both the company’s office in Bur Dubai and Karama are closed.

Gulf News contacted Arabian Times Travel & Tourism for a comment, but there has been no response yet.

The Department of Economic Development then said it had launched an investigation into the complaints against the time-share company accused of duping residents.

“Consumers should ensure they are dealing with a licensed company, review their products and services quality, and take enough time comparing the product, service with other companies,” Al Zaabi warned.

Earlier statement

An earlier response from Arabian Travel Time Travel & Tourism LLC sent in September read: “We respect the news & print media and so we want to provide accurate and true information…. We are unable to make full payments on refunds this month …. We request our valued members to be patient for some more time and believe that the amount invested and contributed for membership with Arabian Times will not be lost…We stand by our valued members …please have ‘trust in us’. We hope to start refunding amounts from October 10 onwards.

The email also stated the company was in the process of restructuring. “We are trying to build a good sales and customer services team to deliver good quality service…We seek your apology for not communicating properly… Arabian Times is also building its own hotel and air ticketing portal which is in the last stages of completion. It will be ready to go live on October 20. The portal will provide holiday services to members…”

Scores of people have claimed they have been swindled out of thousands of dirhams by a holiday company in Dubai.

Victims of the potential fraud interviewed by The National alleged that Dubai-based Royal Regis Tours and Travels disappeared with more than half a million dirhams worth of holiday packages that did not materialise.

Many said they paid Dh10,000 to Dh30,000 as a one-time payment for package deals that promised one free family holiday every year anywhere in the world, discounted hotel rates, free gym memberships and concert tickets, among other perks.

The total number of potential victims is not known but more people are coming forward.

The victims of the accused operator came together on social media and have jointly filed a police case against the company.

They have also approached the Department of Economy and Tourism in Dubai, which regulates the industry. The authorities are aware of the case but did not comment further.

The company’s office in Al Mamzar Centre on Al Ittihad Road has been closed since the alleged scam came to light. The mobile phones of their sales agents were switched-off when The National repeatedly called.

In a series of interviews with The National , alleged victims all pointed to what they believe is a scam.

A raffle prize was used to entice families to gather at a hotel and pay up.

They were given a compelling marketing presentation and were asked to sign-up for holiday deals and prizes worth Dh10,000 to Dh30,000.

Wei Choon Yean says he signed up for the deal because he wanted to take his children on holiday. Photo: Wei Choon Yean

By the time people realised they might be victims of a scam, the company and its dozens of sales staff and managers vanished.

“I lost Dh28,000. I took the membership because I wanted to take my children on holiday. That was my weak spot and that is where they hit,” Wei Choon Yean, a Canadian expat in Dubai, who works as a retail manager, told The National.

Mr Yean said the sales agents were so convincing and friendly that he did not "blink an eye" before swiping his credit card to make a full payment.

“In fact, they made it look like a celebration with balloons and people clapping for us when I signed up. They said it was the best decision I had ever taken for my family. I did not know I was walking into a trap," he said.

Mr Yean said his ordeal began when he casually filled up a raffle ticket at a counter during a sales event at the World Trade Centre in April last year, and later got a call about winning the prize.

“When my wife and I went to a hotel to claim it, they invited us for a presentation about holiday packages the company offered," he said.

“There were several families and half a dozen employees including managers of the tour company. Everything they showed looked like a perfect dream. My contract has seven days of a free stay at any four-star property in the world every year plus many other offers.”

As frequent travellers, the deal appeared good value for money for Mr Yean and his wife.

“If we signed up on the same day, they said we could even get a free holiday for a couple and children who could accompany us at half the cost. We were so enticed and signed up for an emerald package that cost Dh28,000,” he said.

The fake contract that Canadian expat Wei Choon Yean signed, shows he paid Dh28,000 for an 'Emerald' holiday package. Photo: Wei Choon Yean

But in the coming months, several attempts to use the offer did not materialise, Mr Yean claimed, and the company staff kept making excuses such as the unavailability of hotels and lack of advance notice.

Several of his emails went unanswered for months.

“That is when I started Googling the company and saw complaints posted by many others. I thought I would never get scammed and that was the biggest mistake on my side,” said Mr Yean.

Same plot but different victims

His story corroborated that of an Indian couple in Dubai, Paromita and Indrajit. The couple, who did not want to reveal their full names, said they signed up for the deal in August 2022 because they were desperate to travel after the pandemic .

“I think they played on that psyche where people were frustrated with the Covid-19 restrictions,” said Paromita.

The couple paid Dh20,500 for a ‘sapphire package’ that came with free seven days stay and a string of other benefits.

“In November, we did get a free night’s stay in Abu Dhabi and they also offered us a free ticket to a music concert in Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai," she said.

"That won our trust. But every time we tried to book a holiday, it became impossible to get a response.”

The couple said they were shocked to see the office closed when they visited in early January.

The office of the Royal Regis Tours and Travels in Al Mamzar Centre in Dubai remains closed, and the mobile phones of the sales staff also remain switched off. Photo: Wei Choon Yean

Mohammed Khan from Pakistan said he and his four other friends were duped.

“There are five of us. We had saved up money during Covid and wanted to travel together to Europe. All of us lost Dh10,000 each. We hope authorities will nab the culprits,” he said.

Moiz S, an Indian, 42, who works in the healthcare sector in Sharjah, is another victim. He claimed he lost Dh10,900.

“I have been a member since 2019. I could not use any offer because of Covid-19. But I have been pestering them with emails and calls for a trip to Georgia and India but with no luck," he said.

“When I demanded a refund, they flatly refused. It was only when I posted a comment on social media, I got connected with dozens of victims.

“It makes me angry that I lost my hard-earned money. But even worse is the feeling that I got fooled.”

“Noisy ” Review of West Avenue Grille

Mini Grilled cheese stops & Bisque

Got there at 9:30 AM for breakfast but all outside seating taken on this beautiful Sunday morning. Since the wait was long and a train had to be made...headed indoors. It's nothing to look at and the din was overwhelming...could not hear the person sitting a couple feet across from me. The menu had some interesting choices and the food was good....when we finally got it...45 minutes for breakfast? Need more staff I guess.

Recently my girlfriends and I have been coming here for Saturday breakfast. They have indoor and outdoor seating so we enjoy coming here when the weather is nice so we can sit outside. Service can sometimes be a bit slow b/c they do get busy and if you sit outside waitstaff has to go in and out of the restaurant. The food however is always consistently good so we always come back. I always get the west coast omelette and its delish. They offer breakfast/ lunch/ and dinner so there is something for everyone! Will be back again!

Great Family run restaurant offering friendly servers and great food. Outside dining is fun. Breakfasts are great and Dinners are gourmet.

I think this little restaurant is actually located in Jenkintown, Pa, Pa. Serving breakfast and lunch daily, it has fresh made grilled specialties like fresh ground sirloin burgers, crispy buffalo chicken and 3 types of fries. The Waffle fries were great. My associate had the delicious sweet potato fries, another onion rings, and the forth had a fresh side salad. Save room for dessert: The bananna cheesecake was the best!

West Avenue Grille is always a great choice for breakfast and lunch. The quality of food is excellent as are the portions. You may have to wait a bit for a table but it's worth it! Since breakfast is always available, I usually am torn between getting one of their yummy omelets or one of their awesome salads. The menu is quite extensive, so you'll have lots of choices. Be sure to give it a try!

Is this place open? It's Saturday at 11:00 pm and the front door is locked. I'm bummed.

Can I bring my small dog?

I've never seen anyone with a dog but i think i saw one woman bring a small dog inside a carrier.

Went to Schwartz and Sandy's during the VPR viewing party, so it was super busy with tons of people having a blast. And both Toms were there and were super nice and chatty. I thought just being bar owners they would be douchey, let alone being on a tv show with everyone desperate for their attention but they were the complete opposite. I had The Starter drink and it was delicious. Ordered the lobster corn dogs and Ahi TarTare (tacos) and they were also delicious. Once we were able to get a seat, Hector became our server and he was awesome, nice and attentive. Obviously from the pictures this place has a beautiful interior. The outside is what people say it is but there are other boutique stores with most being catered to pets so I thought that was cute. I thought I was just going to come here for a one and done experience but I am for sure coming back and trying other foods on the menu.

**Ambiance:** Schwartz and Sandy's offers a unique blend of cozy interior vibes and divey exterior charm, providing a distinctive setting for a meal. Not a huge fan of the location, it was off the Hollywood strip and about 15 minutes away from West Hollywood where all the main bars and attractions are. **Service:** The standout feature was the outstanding and friendly service from the staff, making the dining experience memorable. **Food:** Despite a slight setback with our food arriving cold, the lobster corn dogs stood out as a delightful and enjoyable dish. Overall, Schwartz and Sandy's provides a cozy atmosphere coupled with excellent service. While there were some temperature issues with the food, the standout dish of lobster corn dogs unique drinks made the visit worthwhile.

I had heard how bad this place was and genuinely thought everyone was overreacting... they were not. Nothing, I mean NOTHING, was good. The drinks were pure sugar and disgusting. The food was cold and over seasoned. The ambiance was confusing. The lights were harsh yet dim? I have no idea how they managed to do this. The music was... like kings of Leon? It was so bizarre. We stayed for 30 minutes, got our check, and left. Shocked it's still open.

Came here from the show VPR and absolutely loved it. The inside was absolutely beautiful....stunning honestly. A lot of detail and super clean. The detail on the ceiling in the bathroom area was extremely creative ( TV w animations ) We sat ourselves due to no hostess and went to the bar, got our drinks really fast. The drinks were strong and very tasty, we got a few shots that were pretty big. The only complaint I could say is it smelt a little like cigarettes. Nice cozy place for drinks and would come back and recommend to non-VPR watchers.

Inside of the beautiful and elegant bar. I've never seen designs like Schwartz and Sandy's bar. Truly one of better bars I've been too.

I made reservations with low expectations, and if I'm honest, they were not surpassed! My friend and I touched down in LA on a crisp Wednesday night in early November, securing a reservation around 9 pm. Upon entering, we discovered a nearly deserted restaurant! The menu was slim and the drink selection had items marked with tape, signaling their unavailability which was kind of funny. Surprisingly, they were also out of Tito's! I opted for their version of an espresso martini, which, at $18, proved somewhat underwhelming. For our adventure with the food menu, we decided on the mushroom gruyere beignets, lobster corndog, and butternut squash cacio e pepe. Regrettably, these dishes failed to whet our appetites! On a positive note, the server and hostess were outstanding, exuding warmth and friendliness. The decor, although charming and perfectly aligned with my taste, garnered mixed reviews from my gal pal, who found it a tad too all over the place. If I found myself in the area, I'd go back for a drink or two but skip the food!

Had a reservation at 8:30 but when we arrived the table was still full so waited a bit until we could be seated. The hostess was super sweet and kept us informed! The table itself was kind of odd as it was only 2 of us but the table was meant for a larger party of 4-5+ and right under a speaker so was very difficult to hear anything or to have a conversation. The decor and ambience are cool! The food is not something I'd recommend. We ordered the little gem salad, the herb fries, and the Schwartz Strawberry Shortcake. The fries were good! The little gem salad was very odd. The dressing was non-existent and was thin like a liquid. The salad was missing things it said it had but then had things it didn't mention which was odd given allergy concerns? The strawberry shortcake should probably not be advertised as a shortcake as it tasted like a combination of a box cake and English muffin and had a very bad proportion of cake to "strawberry". The drinks were good just pricey! At the end of our evening we saw a worker getting yelled at by a manager for taking a break which was kind of upsetting. All for keeping employees in check but I think it might be better to do it in private and not where customers can see. All in all, I think the place is confused about what it is? Or maybe even what it wants to be? It's neither a bar nor a restaurant, but a liminal space existing between the two in a strip mall.

Recommend reservations on Resy. They have a really small parking lot so I recommend battling it out for neighborhood parking. The restaurant was a lot smaller than expected so definitely expect an intimate vibe-- I would say 25 tables at most. Otherwise, it's definitely trendy with a dive bar feel. Nothing glamorous like LVP restaurants or Tom Tom. The menu is limited but we were actually really surprised at how good the food was. What we found interesting is that a majority of the dishes came with sauces and it really made the dishes unique. The shoestring fries($8) sounded so basic but the cherry sauce was delicious. We loved the juicy Lucy sliders ($16) cooked well and filling. The chicken waffle bites ($15) with the honey drizzled was my favorite. The mushroom Gruyère beignets($16) were different wasn't too crazy about them with the lemon cream. The drinks were a bit underwhelming for myself which was the only ding of the night. I love the drinks at Tom Tom and thought it would be similar vibe but was pretty basic. Nothing to write home about. The drinks were $15 and up. Service was solid. Our waitress was basically handling one side of the restaurant by herself as she had a call out and they were short staffed. Appreciate she was honest and we definitely gave her grace about it. Otherwise, this is a fun place to get a bite to eat with friends or a date night if you are a pump rules fan. I was unable to leave a review in July due to Yelp banning reviews because of the scandoval situation so I deleted my food photos but my tik tok has it all. Overall, I enjoyed myself!

We made a reservation in advance just in case it would be busy for a Friday night. We pulled into the small lot and were lucky to find a spot to park. It's in a small strip shopping center so unexpected. The front does have a cute sign. We were able to get seated right away even though we were a little early. Our server also was super friendly. I ordered the butternut squash pasta and my fiancé got the salmon tikka masala. Both dishes were very tasty. We both ate all of it. The pasta was light. The salmon was cooked well and good flavors. The only weird thing was the pasta was about the same price as the salmon which I find strange. Interior decor was fun. Drink menu had 2-3 drinks taped over so not as many available as maybe they typically would.

Food was subpar. The service people were friendly . Unfortunately the ambience did not make sense and the food along with presentation was disappointing. Would not waste my time with this restaurant.

I love Schwartz's and Sandy's! The manager was really nice and came over when our food was wrong. Really good food! We ended up talking to Schwartz while he was there checking in
