If you have a passion for woodwork or even antique furniture, you should plan a visit to High Point, which lies just half an hour away from Winston-Salem. Upon reaching High Point, you will be greeted by the biggest chest of drawers you have ever seen which has a plate at the bottom that reads “Furniture Capital of the World, High Point, NC”. 

You see, in the 1950s, this region was producing 60% of all the bedroom and living room furniture in America and even today it is home to many renowned US and international furniture manufacturers.

Enjoy Burgers & Beer At Foothills Brewery

Having opened its doors in 2004, the Foothills Brewery has quickly grown to become one of the most popular craft brewing companies in the Southeast. With two locations in Winston-Salem, one being a pub and the other a tasting and taproom, there is no better place to stop for a pint of beer and gigantic super juicy burgers! 

The pub also offers live music, trivia nights, delicious craft beer, and signature entrees and appetizers to keep you thoroughly fed and entertained!

Visit ROAR Family Entertainment Center

Play a round of mini putt, take a few swings on the golf simulator, or indulge in a game of boutique bowling – you are guaranteed fun on every floor! 

Outdoor Recreation At C.G. Hill Memorial Park

You don’t have to leave the city to enjoy nature thanks to the nearby C.G. Hill Memorial Park . This 185-acre public park is a beautiful spot for various outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, biking, and picnicking. 

The highlight of the park is the 2.5-acre fishing lake at its center which has a nearby gazebo and courtyard with picnic tables, making it the ideal place for a spot of relaxing fishing or picnicking with the family. 

The park also features a 500+-year-old poplar tree that is said to have sprouted well before Columbus took sail in search of the New World and is associated with plenty of stories and legends!

Picnic At Winston Lake Park

Winston Lake Park just recently reopened in June 2022, after being extensively refurbished. The park now has brand-new picnic tables, restrooms, playground equipment, as well as a new fishing pier and pavilion. 

This free public park also has a 2.4-mile-long walking trail that loops around the lake shoreline making it a great place to visit for a morning walk or an evening stroll. The lake waters have also been dredged to improve the habitat for fish which can be caught in the lake waters as long as you have a permit!

How about the Creek Festival? Usually considered Forsyth Counties number attraction year after year and it donates a huge percentage to charities.

Just an FYI – The Black Mountain Chocolate Bar has closed. I thought it sounded like a great place to visit but their website is now thanking people for their support, but there apparently weren’t enough people supporting them!

The city of Winston-Salem is centrally located in North Carolina’s Piedmont region, between the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and the NC low country.

It’s about an hour west of Durham, an hour north of Charlotte , and 2 hours east of Asheville .  

Salem has been a settlement since the mid-1700s, before the state of North Carolina even existed. Much of the early Moravian village still remains, both as a living neighborhood and as a living history museum .

The town of Winston, a non-Moravian community, was established about 100 years later. In the next half-century, Winston became a hub for the tobacco industry, and home to entrepreneurs like Pleasant Hanes and R.J. Reynolds.

By 1913 Winston-Salem had become one city, and it’s now the 5th most populous city in the state, with around 256,000 residents.

There are tons of interesting and fun things to do in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Many of our favorite Winston-Salem attractions are connected to its history, which is culturally rich and riddled with wealth.

Consequently, there’s an endless array of cool things to see in Winston-Salem— 250-year-old architecture, stately mansions built in the early 1900s, and beautiful parks and gardens — seemingly around every corner.

So the question isn’t what to do in Winston-Salem NC, but how many Winston-Salem activities you can squeeze into a weekend getaway . In our experience, quite a lot of experiences can be packed into such a trip!

The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) is hidden in the depths of a semi-swanky urban neighborhood known as Reynolda Mile.

However, this fascinating Winston-Salem museum has impressive digs on the former estate of James G. Hanes (of Hanes hosiery fame), with impressive venues inside and out.

SECCA was established in 1956 to showcase contemporary local artists, and it served that purpose for decades. It has since expanded into the national and international art scene, too.

This is actually one of our favorite weird things to do in Winston-Salem NC.

The museum is cutting-edge, offering up new approaches to art in a setting that was built to be art in and of itself.

2. Eat Well at Winston-Salem Restaurants

There’s a wonderful collection of quality Winston-Salem restaurants , varying from caffeine-packed cafes for breakfast and fusion cuisine for brunch/lunch to sauce-slinging BBQ shops for dinner.

The city of Winston-Salem NC is not a place to waste your time dining at chain restaurants . Their locally-owned restaurants  boast lots of personality, offering serious takes on good eats.

We had awesome cauliflower tacos at East of Texas , a Tex-Mex joint with an awesome outdoor setting and a great menu. We had real Italian fare at DiLisio’s Italian Restaurant , which was voted the best restaurant in Forsyth County NC.

Reynolda Village has a collection of great places to eat in Winston-Salem. Sandwiches from Theodore’s are a classy winner, donuts and coffee at Dough-Joe’s are amazing, and the dumplings at May Way’s are an unexpected pleasure.

Possibly our best Winston-Salem dining experience was at Mozelle’s Fresh Southern Bistro , a playful restaurant that feels totally local and also totally special.

3. Explore the Downtown Winston-Salem Arts District

Located about 33 miles southwest of Mount Airy NC , the immensely walkable Downtown Winston-Salem offers something quaint for those from bigger cities, as well as easy navigability for those from rural places.

The heart of Downtown Winston-Salem is its Arts District, which is replete with galleries, funky restaurants , kitschy shops, and street art galore!

This  arts district is the way we personally prefer Downtown areas to be. It has good places to eat, interesting places to shop, and just enough crazy energy to make it feel like a walk on the wild side.

We visited during the day and browsed around shops like Body and Soul , and we visited again in the evening on a brewery crawl.  

This is definitely one of our favorite fun things to do   in Winston-Salem for adults. It’s got great nightlife, and a few places that are not entirely suitable for children.

4. Go on a Winston-Salem Brewery Crawl

Craft beers are all the rage in the USA these days, and North Carolina is a mega-market for finding the best brews.

While many beer enthusiasts from afar know about Asheville’s breweries , folks from NC are also clued into the extensive Winston-Salem breweries scene. There are 10 craft breweries , all within walking distance of one another!

Emma and I managed to fit in several of the local breweries in a few days of exploring the area. Wise Man Brewing , Foothills Brewing , and Fiddlin’ Fish Brewing Company are the big dogs on the scene.

We also enjoyed visiting Lesser-Known Beer Company, HOOTS Beer Co , and Small Batch , and sampling local beers from Incendiary Brewing , Joymongers Barrel Hall , Radar Brewing , and ROAR .

Finding good beer in Winston-Salem NC is easy. Deciding on which brewery to visit is a bit more of a challenge.

5. Spend a Day at Reynolda

In terms of history , tobacco is what Winston-Salem is best known for (even if it’s no longer celebrated these days). And Reynolda— the former country bungalow of tobacco magnate J. R. Reynolds— is an absolute highlight.

It includes three major attractions. Reynolda Village is a magical collection of shops and restaurants in converted barns, milking rooms, and worker homes from the planned community.

Magnificent Reynolda Gardens have always been open to the public, and walking through them is arguably one of the best free things to do in Winston-Salem NC.

The Reynolda House Museum of American Art blew Emma away with its eclectic art collection, including showstoppers from legends like  Georgia O’Keefe, John James Audubon, John Singer Sargent, and Edward Hicks.

Much like the Biltmore Estate in Asheville  (but not nearly as painful the pocketbook), this simply has to make it on your list of the most-do stuff to do in Winston-Salem.

6. Stroll Around Salem Lake

We got a chance to visit Salem Lake on a bit of lark. It wasn’t actually on our planned itinerary, but our eBike tour guide took us there for fun.

The lake is a major attraction for locals, offering opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking , biking, and more. There are also pavilions for public use and a marina.

Our friends who used to live in Winston-Salem NC had a house nearby, and they used to use the park frequently for exercise.

It’s a very pretty area, connected to the city and Quarry Park via the Greenway. There’s also a great network of trails on this side of town.

7. Take an eBike Tour of the Greenway (w/Triad ECO Adventures)

Emma and I don’t have a lot of experience with eBikes or Segways, but we’re always up for an adventure.

So we were stoked when Triad ECO Adventures offered to take us out for any eBike tour of the Greenway, which offers a thick swath of wilderness right in the middle of the city.

We were a little worried by the weather when we showed up in the morning, but the staff seemed unconcerned. They gave us quick instructions and a practice session on how to ride the bikes, and then we were off!

Our guide was patient with any ineptness we had with the eBikes (which are surprisingly easy to ride), and the ride along the Greenway was awesome.

Triad ECO Adventures also has other tours, including paddle boarding and trolley tours. They take visitors on the Greenway as well as all around Downtown Winston-Salem.

8. Tour Old Salem Museums & Gardens

The one thing we’d done in Winston-Salem prior to this visit was a quick ride around the Old Salem Museums & Gardens .

This attraction was impressive enough the first time that we knew we needed to visit it again!

Old Salem is only a couple of blocks, but it truly makes a lasting impression. It is still largely composed of original buildings from the late 1700s, and many are used as part of a living history  museum .

The Old Salem Visitor Center does a lot to explain the history of the place. However, taking a guided tour of the neighborhood buildings and period demonstrations is well worth the investment and time.

A quality bonus of the tour, the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts has a massive collection of antique home items, including fine furniture, pottery, and more.

9. Venture to Tanglewood Park

Tanglewood Park is located slightly outside of Winston-Salem proper, but it is definitely a great place to visit while you’re in town .

It’s essentially a massive playground for kids and adults alike to enjoy.

For adults, Tanglewood has tennis courts and two golf courses, including a Championship Course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. 

The park also has horseback riding stables, an RV-friendly campground , a dog park, and a BMX racing track. There are lakes for recreational use, and a water park for the kids.

Other highlights when visiting Tanglewood Park include the Manor House, as well as the renowned Tanglewood Park Arboretum and Rose Garden .

10. Visit Historic Bethabara

2147 Bethabara Road, Winston-Salem NC • 336-924-8191

Before there was Old Salem (and long before there was Winston), Bethabara was the first settlement in what became Winston-Salem. BRMTG co-founder Bret Love’s ancestors defended the settlement during the Revolutionary War. 

Dating back to the mid-1700s, the historic site still has some of its original structures. And what isn’t original has been recreated very accurately by using carefully documented layouts and architectural plans.

This was the very first stop on our trip, and it really set the stage for understanding who the Moravians were and how the city evolved. 

We thoroughly enjoyed a guided walk through the grounds and an extensive tour of the gardens , which are now farmed to supply food for local charities.

I highly recommend visiting Historic Bethabara as a jumping-off point for any Winston-Salem trip.   –by Jonathon Engels, all photos by Emma Gallagher

Stay on marked trails, take only pictures, pack out your trash, and be considerate of others who share the trails and parks you explore. 

Remember that waterfalls and rocky summits can be dangerous. Never try to climb waterfalls or get close to a ledge to get a selfie.

When you're exploring the wilderness, it's better to be safe than to be a statistic!

Old salem museum and gardens.

This attraction is one of the most informational and interesting things to do in Winston Salem. It’s a can’t miss when you are in the city! The area of Old Salem has so much to see and do as it explains to you what life was like for the Moravians (German-speaking protestants) that lived there. You can explore the St. Phillips Moravian Church and watch presentations of activities that were done in Old Salem back in the day, including pottery demonstrations and other hands on demonstrations by craftsmen and tradespeople. This area is particularly beautiful in October and November when the leaves are changing colors as it is a beautiful place to experience fall in North Carolina . While there, consider grabbing food at the Winkler Bakery or at the Flour Box Tea Room & Cafe to taste Moravian cuisine. Make sure to try the Moravian cookies with a scoop of ice cream in between! The 75 acres of Old Salem are free for you to walk around, explore the shops, and enjoy the historic architecture. However, the best way to experience the Old Salem Museum and Gardens is by buying a ticket. With the ticket, you will be given access to 25 stops on the grounds where you can have a more informative and in depth experience at Old Salem.

Eat Fresh Farm To Table Food at Jeffrey Adams

If you’re looking for a good place to eat in Winston-Salem, consider having a meal at Jeffrey Adams on West Fourth Street. The food is not only fresh and perfectly cooked, it is beautifully assembled as well! The menu changes seasonly to ensue the quality and freshness of ingredients. Tanglewood Park

Explore Downtown Arts District

Reynolda Gardens

Reynold Gardens of Wake Forest University is a free site in Winston Salem that has 134 acres of woodlands, wetlands, trails, and a four acre garden with a greenhouse. On the grounds, you will find stunning stone work. Stone arches, paths, fences, benches, and decorative spirals can be found throughout the gardens. If you are traveling with dogs, they are welcome at Reynolda Gardens, the grounds are also a beautiful place to have a picnic when in Winston Salem. The history of Reynold Gardens is quite interesting. During the Country House Era in America, industrialists would create expansive estates for themselves where they could enjoy the fresh air, grow healthy food, and just spend time outdoors being active. The Reynolda Estate was one of the few estates like this that were located in the south. Today, the gardens are for anyone to enjoy and are now one of the most beautiful things to do in Winston Salem.

Old Homeplace Vineyard

If you are traveling with your partner, a stop at the Old Homeplace Vineyard is one of the most romantic things to do in Winston Salem! This vineyard in Winston Salem will make you feel right at home. It’s located out in a beautiful natural area between acres of rolling pastures and a 1200 acre lake. The land that the vineyard is on was formerly a tobacco farm but now it is used to produce wine for people to come and enjoy when in the area. You can truly relax and enjoy yourself at the Old Homeplace Vineyard. Kaleideum Museum

There are two different locations, you will hear them referred to as Kaleideum Downtown and Kaleideum North. Like most children’s museums, the Kaleidrum Museum is full of exhibits and areas that encourage kids to move their bodies, learn, and play. Some of the most kid improved exhibits at the museum include the climbing lobby, the outdoor Kaleidoscope that children can climb inside of, the amazing airways exhibit where little ones get to make prediction and test hypotheses about which path air way take through different tubes and other airways, and last, but not least, the studio where kids can participate in different art and building activities in a community work space. Historic Bethabara Park

Bethabara is the site where the first Europeans settlement in the Piedmont area of North Carolina was located. In the 1700’s a group of Moravians traveled down to the area from Pennsylvania and formed a small village. Within a few years of settling, the development had become a bustling town complete with trade, a distillery, a tavern, and more! Today, you can explore the historic Bethabara, enjoy their wildlife preserve, walk through the gardens, hike the trails, explore the village, see a palisade from the French and Indian War, and more on site! Paul J Ciener Botanical Garden

With all of this in mind, it is fair to say that this is a historically and culturally significant part of the country.

Aside from its proud history, Winston-Salem is also famous for its beauty, being located in between the smoky Blue Ridge Mountains and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean. The city has a little under 400,000 residents, but it is still packed full of parks, museums, breweries, restaurants, and art galleries, so if you choose to visit you will not be short of activities to enjoy in this picturesque corner of the United States.

9. BB&T Field

Cool Things To Do In Winston Salem

Old salem museum & gardens.

Old Salem  was a town that was settled by the Moravian community in 1766. Old Salem acts as a living history museum as living-history interpreters practice the trades of tinsmiths, gunsmiths, bakers, and carpenters as people visit the town. In addition to the reenactments, there are 20 historic buildings to explore, making this a unique and must-do activity in Winston-Salem.

During your visit to the Moravian settlement, you will get to see how bakers made bread, how potters shaped clay, and how shoes were made. Lastly, don’t forget to take a stroll through the beautiful gardens during your visit!

Visit The Reynolda House

The  Reynolda House  was originally home to R.J Reynolds, the founder of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Built in 1917, the house is now a public Museum of American Art that features some exquisite art masterpieces. When visiting the Reynolda House, you get the chance to experience the life of the wealthy in the 1920’s.

The Reynolda House is more than just art. The house remains decorated as it was when the Reynolds were residents. Rooms throughout the home feature a bowling alley and an indoor pool. Make sure to see the elaborate gardens when walking the 170-acre estate!

Walk Around Historic West End

The  West End Historic District  area of town was designed in 1890 as a “streetcar suburb.” It continues to feel the same way as it did back then, full of charm and architectural gems. Architectural styles range from Queen Anne to Neo-Classical Revival to Colonial Revival to Craftsman styles.

Located on Burke Street, The SNOB shop is a popular consignment store and shopping destination when in West End.

Shop on Trade Street

Head to  Trade Street  to explore all the boutiques and charming specialty shops. There are several snack shops and caf é s that line the street and make for a great afternoon out. I must warn you – parking can be difficult depending on the day and time of day you go. So plan accordingly!

Some popular destinations on Trade Street include Kindred Spirits for holistic supplies and The Mast General Store for a variety of outdoor gear.

Eat Some BBQ

Historic Bethabara Park

Bethabara Park is a charming and historic place to visit. Bethabara Park was a Moravian Settlement that was started in 1753 prior to the community’s permanent relocation to Old Salem.

What remains are beautiful walking trails around the 183-acre property, great places to spot wildlife, and preserved historic buildings. On the first Saturday of fall, Bethabara Park hosts the annual apple festival that invites the community to experience a piece of their history and culture.

Quarry Park

Another fun thing to do in Winston Salem is to visit this Quarry Park. Relax at this nature-filled wonder in Winston-Salem. This quarry offers some inspiring views of both the city skyline and the water-filled quarry below. Functional from 1920 to the 1970s, the quarry slowly filled with water after it was no longer in use.

When visiting  Quarry Park , there is a long pier that extends above the quarry for a spectacular view. If you don’t feel like climbing up to the pier, there are other walking paths you can enjoy.

Bonus :  Pet-friendly! Take your dog with you, just make sure you keep em’ on a leash!

Step Back in Time at Mast General Store

Visiting the Mast General Store is another fun thing to do in Winston Salem, especially on rainy days or if limited on time. A trip into this shop will take you back in time and walk you down memory lane.

In traditional fashion, they sell a little bit of everything. From home goods, outdoor gear, footwear, old-fashioned toys, books, and more than 500 varieties of old-fashioned candy, the Mast General Store has something to interest anyone who enters. They have multiple locations!

Photograph the Shell Station

This is the last standing  clamshell station  in the United States. In the 1930s, there were originally eight of these shell stations built; however, over time the other shell stations did not last with the changing times.

The remaining shell station in Winston-Salem was restored in the late 1990s by the Preservation North Carolina historic society and today remains a historic landmark just north of Interstate 40.

Walk the Art Trail

The Art Trail is a self-guided walking tour of murals and public art through the downtown Winston-Salem arts district. Winston-Salem is home to the famous Art-O-Mat, a machine that is revolutionizing art.

What the heck is the Art-O-Mat? It is an upcycled old cigarette vending machine that now spits out a piece of artwork about the size of a cigarette box. Be on the lookout for these machines as you walk the art trail. You may spot an Art-O-Mat machine at Krankie’s, a/perture Cinema, or Wise Man Brewing.

As you enjoy a beautiful walk through downtown Winston, enjoy everything this city has to offer. Known as the City of Arts, be prepared to see mixed media from graffiti, vintage signs, murals, pop art, and more. Art is a form of expression and a way to connect with people.

Check Out the Coffee Pot

An iconic display of cultural heritage, a visit to Winston-Salem would not be complete without a stop at this roadside attraction. Standing over 7 feet tall, it is hard to miss this piece of art. This metal  coffee pot  was constructed by two Moravian brothers in 1858, making it one of the oldest sights in the city.

This massive landmark is very mysterious and filled with folklore. It was once used to promote a local tin shop, grabbing public attention. It has been said that it can hold up to 11,840 cups of coffee! Now if they ever filled it with coffee, we may never know.

Visit a Brewery

One of the best things to do in Winston Salem is to hit up a brewery, enjoy a beer, and take in the different atmospheres. There are a multitude of microbreweries in the area to explore!

• Foothills Brewery : This is the most popular and well-known brewery in Winston-Salem. They have made a name for themselves by making high-quality beverages. They recently expanded to a second location that allows them room to host events and festivals.
• Incendiary Brewery:  I love the industrial atmosphere of Incendiary. It’s also located near the Black Mountain Chocolate Factory and Cugino Forno Pizzeria!
• Fiddlin’ Fish Brewery : Opened in August 2017, Fiddlin’ Fish is a family-owned business that is located in the Downtown Arts Districts. In addition to their craft beers, you can get involved in their run or ride club.

Check Out Bailey Park

Located in the Innovation Quarter, Bailey Park is 1.6 acres of public green space. They often host concerts, food trucks, festivities and other free events for the community. Even if there are no festivities occurring, it is a great place to go exploring, have a picnic, and have a relaxing afternoon.

Enjoy a Visit to Tanglewood Park

Located just 15 minutes from downtown Winston-Salem is  Tanglewood Park . Josh and I frequently visit Tanglewood and enjoy all of the a trmenities that the park has to offer. Situated on 1,200 acres, Tanglewood Park offers walking trails, 2 golf courses, public swimming pool, paddle boats, Softgolf, a dog park, a BMX racing track, an RV park, tennis courts, bike trails, and more.

For a $2 entry fee for personal vehicles, you can ride through the park at your own leisure. Additional fees may be required to participate in other amenities and/or attractions.

Visit Winkler Bakery

Winkler Baker is the oldest continually operating baker in America! It’s located in Old Salem, so if you plan to visit this historic area, add Winkler Bakery to your list.

We love how the bakers are dressed in costume to represent the historic era. Make sure you sample some of the delicious cookie samples, most famously the Moravian sugar cookie!

Enjoy Live Music at ROAR

Have you ever wondered what life was like in the “roaring” 1920s? Named after this era,  ROAR  was established in 2021 as a hip place to hang out in downtown Winston Salem. ROAR offers 4 levels of entertainment that includes a food hall, bowling alleys, golf simulators, a theater, and a roof top lounge.

The Southeastern Center of Contemporary Art

The  Southeastern Center of Contemporary Art (SECCA)  opened in 1956 to showcase local artists’ works. They now display mixed media from around the world. There will always be something new when you visit SECCA.

Take a Walk by Salem Lake

It may not be Lake Norman, but  Salem Lake  is a popular place to walk and enjoy surrounding nature. Over a 365-acre area, Salem Lake offers seven miles of trails and plenty of fishing. The paths are easy to navigate and fishing is a favorite for many locals. There are also plenty of boating opportunities on the water to enjoy.

Marvel at Architectural Wonders at Korner’s Folly

Korner’s Folly  is a quirky 22-room building that was the result of artist and designer Jule Gilmer Korner. Built in 1880, the house was intended to be used to showcase home decor options to interior design clients. While it may not appear like much on the outside, the inside is much more exciting and unique.

When you step inside Korner’s Folly, you will witness the unique design. Inside you will find 15 different fireplaces, ceiling heights that vary from 5.5 to 25 feet, trap doors, and no doorway or window is the same. There seriously is no other home like it.

Located 25 minutes away in Lexington, NC,  Childress Vineyards  is the “wine estate” of former NASCAR driver Richard Childress. This is a lovely place to go and enjoy an afternoon.

I must confess, I’m not a wine drinker; however, I still enjoy a trip to Childress. Not only do they offer vineyard tours and wine tastings, but they also have a bistro on site with delicious food. If you plan on going for lunch or Sunday brunch, I recommend making reservations ahead of time.

Take the Kids To Kaleideum

Kaleideum  is an interactive science center and museum in Winston-Salem that is focused on hands-on learning. Kaleideum was established in 2016 after the merger of The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks. Not only is Kaleideum a place for kids, but adults will also enjoy the never-ending exploration, constant change, and learning opportunities available.

Exhibits are always changing at Kaleideum. There is a planetarium where live sky tours and laser shows occur. Kaleideum also offer various camps throughout the year for kids to continue exploring nature and their surroundings.

Find a Book at McKay’s

Whether or not you love reading,  McKay’s  (previously called Edward McKay) is a unique place to stop in and visit. It is a used book store that sells so many good finds. Not only can you find books, but they also sell loved music, movies, video games, board games, and more!

In 2020, the Winston-Salem store moved and expanded to a larger building. This is an even bigger reason to visit their new and improved location!

Bowman Gray Stadium Racing

Bowman Gray Stadium is the longest  continuously  operated NASCAR-sanctioned track in the country! The fact that it’s right here in Winston Salem is cRaZy to me. The first NASCAR race took place at Bowman Gray Stadium on May 18, 1949. Bowman Gray has continued their weekly racing tradition to this very day. Even if you are not a NASCAR fan (which I am not), you have to go at least once – just for the experience!

Pro Tip : I recommend taking some sort of ear protection. It gets very loud and you don’t want to hear ringing in your ears for days later!

Day trip to Blowing Rock

Blowing Rock  is such an adorable mountain town and is less than a 2-hour drive. I feel like there is something for everyone in Blowing Rock. There are numerous hiking trails, quaint shops, award-winning restaurants, and plenty of outdoor adventure opportunities.

Make sure you stop at  Kilwin’s Chocolates   in Downtown Blowing Rock. You can smell the deliciousness from the street. Their toasted coconut ice cream is my favorite!

A quick 15 minutes away is the city of Boone, NC. Not only is Boone home to Appalachian State University, but it also has a cute main street. Make sure you hit up  Dan’l Boone Inn  for some family-style dining!

Go Hiking at Hanging Rock

There are a few really good places to hike near Winston-Salem. Hanging Rock is one of my favorites because of the views and it is less than an hour’s drive! I call this a win-win. What do you think?

There are numerous trails available with some leading to waterfalls, rock outcrops, a mountain cave, and gorgeous mountain views. If you go doing the summer and are looking for the perfect swimming hole, check out Lower Cascade Falls. We took our water-loving Golden Retriever and he definitely approved!

Day Trip to Mt. Airy

If you ever watched the Andy Griffith show growing up, you’re probably familiar with the town of Mt. Airy. Less than a 1-hour drive from Winston Salem, Mt. Airy is a fun place to go for the day. Due to its popularity that stemmed from Andy Griffith, Mt. Airy is a historic town that has some exciting Mayberry landmarks.

Plan a visit to Mt. Airy and splurge on one of the unique tours that will take you down memory lane. Mt. Airy offers squad car tours, trolley tours, and walking tours.

Tailgate at a Wake Forest Football Game

What is more fun than football? Some people don’t know of anything they love better. When tailgating at Truist Field, Wake Forest ensures a fun experience. They have a DEACTOWN Fan Zone which will have food trucks, live bands, and a beer garden. Kids will be greeted by inflatables, face painting, and balloon artists. Even if you don’t love football, I think you can find something to enjoy!

Enjoy a Movie at A/perture Cinema

A smaller theater with a lot to offer,  A/perture Cinema  is located in downtown Winston-Salem. A/perture Cinema doesn’t have your traditional concession stand, but also offers beer and wine to moviegoers. It boasts 4.5 movie screens with a diverse selection of movies annually.

If you are looking for a relaxing and romantic date night, check out A/perture Cinema. It’s the only year-round art cinema in the Piedmont Triad area.

See a Live Play

Call me old school, but I love live theater. Winston Salem is known for the arts and, therefore, has several theatres that produce shows, musicals, and plays throughout the year.

Attend an Art Class

Find your inner Picasso while taking an art class at  Sawtooth School of Visual Arts . Sawtooth celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2020 and has become a well-known establishment in Winston-Salem. In addition to art classes, Sawtooth also has a gift shop with work provided by the art community, as well as art camps for kids.

Sawtooth offers more than just painting classes. From woodworking, clay sculpture, photography, wheel throwing, and more, Sawtooth can work with just about any media. Find a class on their website and sign up to learn a new skill!

Go to a Butterfly Farm

Yes, you heard me right! Less than 30 minutes away is  All-A-Flutter Farm . This is a special place where you can surround yourself with beautiful butterflies. At this farm they raise thousands of Monarchs and sell them to businesses and individuals for all kinds of special occasions, such as weddings, graduation, and grand openings. 

This farm is a great place to take the kids and enjoy nature and God’s masterpiece. Kids will love hand feeding the butterflies and taking spectacular photos. 

Enjoy a Good Restaurant

Some of our favorite restaurants are in downtown Winston-Salem. Parking can be a challenge, but if you plan it right or know where the parking decks are located, it’s quite doable!

• Mozelles’s : A great place to enjoy Southern Cuisine. They have quaint outdoor seating and accommodate cooler temperatures by providing heaters and blankets. They are known for their tomato pie, but I personally love the fried chicken! Reservations recommended!
• Sweet Potatoes: Located on Trade Street, Sweet Potatoes is another Southern staple. Last few times I have gone, they have required a reservation so I recommend calling ahead to inquire. They also have their very own cookbook!
• Camel City BBQ:   This has a unique, industrial atmosphere and is very family friendly. Not only do they serve BBQ, but they have an arcade and numerous board games available to play while waiting on your food.
• Old Fourth Street Filling Station : This restaurant is situated across the street from Mozelles. It also boasts a charming outdoor patio and cozy fireplace indoors. This is my mom’s favorite place to dine downtown.

Special Mention:

• The Porch Kitchen & Cantina : While this Tex Mex restaurant isn’t necessarily downtown, it has some delicious food. It also has it’s own parking lot (which means a lot to my hubby)!

Visit The Playground Golf & Sports Bar

The Playground  may be newer to the Piedmont Triad area (est 2020), but it will not disappoint when it comes to entertainment. Located in Clemmons, NC, the Playground has golf simulators that can be booked, 20 beers and ciders, live music on certain days, and various entertainment throughout the week.

Walk around Reynolda Village

If you are looking for a unique and historic place to shop and walk around, check out  Reynolda Village . Located on what was once the estate of the R.J. Reynolds family, the buildings were transformed from being a dairy barn, school, cattle shed, post office, and more to now shops and restaurants.

As you walk around this English Village, keep the history in mind and enjoy a step back in time!

Enjoy a Cr ê pe at Penny Path Caf é

I highly recommend Penny Path Café, especially if you are looking for a unique and delicious lunch or dessert place. It’s also located in Reynolda Village, so it’s a great place to stop if you’re in the area.

Bonus:  They are super dog friendly! Woody loves joining us on the outdoor patio. He usually charms the waiter/waitress with his puppy dog eyes and gets served his very own free puppy crêpe before we do!

Watch a Baseball Game at Truist Stadium

Home to the Winston-Salem Dash minor league baseball team, Truist Stadium is a great place to enjoy a game during baseball season. It is believed that The Dash was named after the dash symbol located between the city’s name of Winston-Salem.

Experience ARTivity on the Green

In the heart of the Downtown Arts District,  ARTivity on the Green  is the city’s first public park. Artivity on the Green was born from the collective vision of artists, community leaders, and urban planners who sought to rejuvenate a neglected industrial site into a welcoming, open-air creative haven.

Visit Mrs. Hanes’ Moravian Cookies

21 Fun Things to Do in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has the feeling of a small town wrapped in a big city. Once known for industries like tobacco and textiles, it has broadened its appeal as a center of art, culture, and food while still paying homage to its past. From shopping to street art to living history museums, there are lots of things to do in Winston-Salem and plenty of people to meet.

We’ve visited Winston Salem numerous times, and, every trip, locals are eager to tell us about their city and to share somewhere else we absolutely have to go . Here’s a look at what to do in Winston-Salem on a weekend visit (or longer!).

Visit Old Salem Museums and Gardens

Eat your way along the north carolina bbq trail, tour reynolda house museum, shop along trade street, browse mast general store, enjoy the view at artivity on the green, take a walk along the art trail, visit mrs. hanes’ moravian cookies, see the old shell station, raise a glass at broad branch distillery, see the coffee pot, visit graylyn estate, sample the varietals of yadkin valley wineries, find an art-o-mat, try craft beer at foothills brewing, tour korner’s folly, visit bethabara historic district, see tanglewood park, take a trip to mount airy, visit pilot mountain state park, hike in hanging rock state park.

Spending an afternoon at Old Salem Museums and Gardens is one of the most fun things to do in Winston-Salem. In the more than 20 historic buildings, interpreters show the activities of daily living as they were in this Moravian community in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The cobbler hand crafts shoes and sisters dye yarn for weaving. Nearby, people tend the gardens and cook with the bounty just as they would have in Old Salem.

A visit to Old Salem Museums and Gardens is a fascinating look into the customs, businesses, and celebrations of this unique religious community. We love everything about this great living history museum, but our favorite stop is the Old Salem bakery where you can watch all the delicious items being made. You can even buy a few to take home with you.

North Carolina is known for its barbecue , so trying some is a must when you visit Winston-Salem. For 100 years, locals have smoked pork in the same way—low and slow over wood and coals to get just the right amount of flavor. In North Carolina, there’s no such thing as “pulled” pork. Here, it’s chopped, coarsely chopped, or sliced.

The North Carolina Barbecue Society has honored those who follow those traditions by putting together the Historic Barbecue Trail through the state. Participating restaurants must meet certain criteria, including not using electricity or gas and having been in business for at least 15 years.

Check out the trail and pick the stop that works best for your trip. We loved Real Q for everything from the barbecue to the fabulous hush puppies.

The Reynolda House Museum of American Art provides a remarkable look into the life of a family that helped shape the development of the city. The house was originally the home of tobacco magnate R.J. Reynolds and his wife Katherine, set on a massive 1067-acre estate.

Built in 1917, the Reynolda House is a monument to how the upper class lived, featuring large areas for receiving guests, a beautiful indoor pool, a bowling alley, and a life-sized doll house. The house has a premiere collection of American art spanning 300 years, including work from artists such as Mary Cassatt and Georgia O’Keefe.

There is also a separate wing for temporary exhibits. Outside, the four acres of gardens are full of gorgeous roses and exotic flowers, shrubs, and even vegetables, echoing the plans of the Reynolds family from a century ago.

Trade Street is one of the best places to go in Winston-Salem if you’re in the mood for shopping. This area of downtown is full of great boutiques, specialty stores, and galleries. It’s an excellent place to spend a couple of hours.

We loved discovering the jewelry and decorations at the shops and the hundreds of unique artworks at Piedmont Craftsmen , a craft artists’ guild with a storefront on North Trade Street. In between the shops, there are also plenty of restaurants and cafes to keep you well-fueled for browsing and buying.

One of the cornerstones of Trade Street, Mast General Store merits its own spot on the “must visit” list. Started in western North Carolina in 1883, Mast General Store is true to the 19th-century general store concept featuring a little bit of everything from clothes to dish towels to grits.

In particular, the store is known for its huge selection of old-fashioned candy. We loved picking up a few childhood favorites along with some throwback (and Harry Potter-themed!) sodas.

In the heart of the Downtown Arts District, ARTivity on the Green is the city’s first public park. It’s impossible to walk by without being pulled in by the unusual shape and bright color of the red “smokestacks” that honor the city’s industrial past. The benches and green space provide a fun place to hang out, and the rotating murals ensure the view is always unique.

In addition to ARTivity on the Green, downtown Winston-Salem is home to brilliant murals just about everywhere you look. From whimsical pieces like a giant gumball machine to a work honoring Frederick Douglass, the street art runs the gamut of subject matter.

Follow the self-guided art trail around downtown to appreciate it all and enjoy one of the best free things to do in Winston-Salem.

Making 10 million cookies a year, Mrs. Hanes’ Moravian Cookies has been a staple in the Winston-Salem area for over 60 years. These thin, crispy cookies come in six flavors—traditional ginger, lemon, sugar, black walnut, chocolate, and butterscotch—and are all rolled and cut-out by hand.

With advanced scheduling, visitors can take a one-hour tour of the factory and watch the cookies being made on weekdays year-round (except November and December when demand is at its peak). Every weekday, the operation is also visible through the windows in the shop, so you don’t have to take a full tour to see where this popular treat is made. The employees here are among the nicest you’ll ever meet, so feel free to ask questions.

On the south end of town, you’ll find the last giant yellow clamshell Shell Oil station in the country. Once conceived as a way to advertise and build awareness of the Shell brand, eight such stations were built in the area in the 1930s. The one on the corner of Peachtree Street and East Sprague Street is the last one standing.

The Shell station no longer operates as a gas station but is a monument to itself, featuring photos and articles about its building and other Shell memorabilia. It’s a great stop for a photo op and a quick trip back in history.

Broad Branch Distillery is another one of the best places in Winston-Salem to indulge a vice. If you like whiskey and rum, this former tobacco warehouse in the Arts District is the place to be.

Broad Branch, one of 75+ distilleries in North Carolina , is a grain-to-glass distillery. They oversee every part of the process that results in their premium whiskeys and other spirits.

Stop by for a cocktail or a tasting and a tour that will take you behind the scenes. Our favorites were Smashing Violet, a blueberry-infused smooth North Carolina whiskey with a hint of natural sweetness, and Sungrazer rum, which draws some of its flavor from aging in port and whiskey barrels.

One of the oldest landmarks, the city’s giant tin coffee pot was built in 1858. At over 7 feet tall, it was an attention-getting promotion for a local tin shop. Over the years, it has become one of the most recognizable symbols in town.

The Coffee Pot—also known as Mickey’s Coffee Pot, after the tinsmiths who built it—is owned by the city. It has been moved a few times in its 150-year history but is now located in a grassy island formed by Old Salem Road and Main Street.

A few miles from downtown Winston-Salem, the Graylyn Estate was once one of the largest private homes in North Carolina. An opulent house built by a R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company executive in 1932, Graylyn is now an exquisite hotel and conference venue.

If you can’t stay overnight, consider coming for dinner or one of their regular Tour Pour du Jour events, which includes a tour of the property and a sampling of Graylyn’s house wines. Fair warning: these monthly events are popular and often sell out in advance.

Just west of Winston-Salem is the Yadkin Valley, a 1.4 million-acre area that includes over 45 fabulous vineyards and wineries producing everything from North Carolina-native Muscadine wine to sophisticated Super Tuscans.

If you want to tiptoe among the vines, you can reach several picturesque Yadkin Valley vineyards in just a half-hour. Check out some of the 30+ offerings from Childress Vineyards while enjoying lunch in their gorgeous bistro that has sweeping views of the grounds.

We first heard of Art-o-mat back in 1999 when one was displayed at the Whitney Museum in New York. Lance set about collecting the miniature pieces of art they dispensed at every opportunity. What we didn’t know then was that these clever re-purposed cigarette machines had their roots in Winston-Salem. Local artist Clark Whittington turned the offending machines into something that would dispense beauty in the heart of tobacco country.

The original Art-o-mat artworks were photos from Clark on wooden blocks that sold for only $1. Over time, he has sourced artists from around the world to keep the 100+ machines stocked with art. These cool art dispensers are at several spots around town, including the original one at Mojito on Trade Street. Check to see if there is an Art-o-mat near you .

One of the most popular craft breweries in Winston Salem is Foothills Brewing . For over 15 years, they have made and bottled their offerings in the city.

Locals love the downtown brewpub for great food, beer specials, and live music. To learn even more about the brewing process at Foothills, visit their main facility and tasting room where they offer Beer School and samples of all their unique brews.

Korner’s Folly, a 22-room mansion just outside Winston-Salem, seems just like a normal house from the outside. It’s inside that the home’s unusual features become clear.

Completed in 1880, Korner’s Folly was built by Jule Gilmer Korner—a decorator, designer, and all-around creative gentleman—to showcase all the features his clients could choose for their own homes. As a result, it has 15 fireplaces, eight kinds of brick, and ceiling heights ranging from 5.5 to 25 feet high. With murals, tilework, trap doors, and more, Korner’s home was his life’s work and a fitting canvas for his talents.

The home is open for tours year-round, and there are regular programs like scavenger hunts and themed events. At Christmas, every inch of the house is decorated in festive style by local volunteers—it’s remarkable to see.

Less than 10 miles away is a Moravian settlement known as Bethabara Historic District . First settled in 1753, Bethabara was meant to be a temporary home while the Moravians looked for a more suitable permanent location, which ultimately became Old Salem.

The 183-acre park and wildlife preserve has the restored 1788 Gemeinhaus (the Bethabara Moravian Church), a couple of buildings, and the excavated foundations of the original settlement along with the restored colonial gardens for which Bethabara was well-known. A visitor’s center provides more information about the Moravian settlers, and tours are available.

Every year, from mid-November through New Year’s Day, Tanglewood Park becomes one of the most popular attractions in Winston-Salem. The route through the park is laced with bright wreaths, brilliant snowflakes, and winter scenes. In all, the 5-mile route has over one million lights in dozens of displays you drive through.

In addition to being one of the best and biggest light shows in the Southeast, Tanglewood’s Festival of Lights also features Gift Village where visitors can make s’mores, meet Santa, and do their holiday shopping. A visit here is one of the best things to do in Winston-Salem during the holidays, but plan ahead because entry lines can be long.

Head just a half-hour out of the city to the town of Mount Airy, North Carolina . Famous as the hometown of Andy Griffith and the model for his Mayberry, Mount Airy has everything there is to love about a small town.

In Mount Airy, you can visit the Andy-related sites like his eponymous museum or take a squad car tour through TV history. There’s plenty to do that’s not “Mayberry,” too. Stop by the White Elephant Beer Company for some craft brews, try the best burger around at Old North State Winery, or take in some old-time music at the Earle Theater.

If you’re looking to spend some time outdoors near Winston-Salem, Pilot Mountain State Park is a great choice. Just a half-hour from downtown, you can be in the middle of the park’s 6+ miles of hiking and bridle trails.

The park offers opportunities for rock climbing, rappelling, and canoeing plus camping at the 42-site campground. We loved the chance to walk around and photograph the scenery.

Just 30 miles from the city is beautiful Hanging Rock State Park in the Sauratown Mountain Range. Visitors can boat, swim, rock climb, and hike to their hearts’ content. Adventure seekers will like Moore’s Knob, the highest point in the Sauratown Mountains, where they can climb Moore’s Wall.

Spending time by the lake is more our speed, and we love hiking to the park’s stunning waterfalls. For a rustic getaway, consider staying in a cabin near the park’s edge.

Make sure to pair one of the seasonal dishes with their inventive cocktails. Quanto Basta : Italian restaurant featuring hand-stretched pizzas, delicious meatballs, and lots of great pasta dishes. Good article, brewery hopping is a ton of fun downtown Fiddling Fish, Wiseman, Incendiary are just a few that are within blocks of each other. There is also a new complex downtown called Roar with restaurants, bowling and other stuff that you have to visit and add to your list

The original folks from Dewey’s have opened a small shop on Miller St behind Publix w the original Moravian Sugar Cake and their cookies- so happy they are back - 6 th generation- the best- real butter cream etc

If you have a unicorn obsessed child or if you just love snow cones with the "good ice" this is the place for you! First off, their sno for their sno cones is so smooth and melts perfect without chewing. If you're a sno cones fanatic, you know the kind of ice I'm referring too! The flavor choices are great and they are pros at flavor combos to make delicious treats! I love their loaded options! My daughter's favorite is "the sprinkled unicorn" which is a rainbow sno cone with whipped cream, a fruit rope and a rainbow sucker. The owners are just the best. So kind and caring!! They love this place and you can tell by their demeanor and how beautiful the inside is! In addition, the business has unicorn apparel, unicorn toys and trinkets and other small business have item there as well such as chicken pies, breads and other dessert treats. They also have a cute kind of enclosed area to let kids play with a play kitchen, unicorns and toy cars. SO you can maybe enjoy that sno cone in peace (parents I'm looking at you!)

Absolutely love this little place! My kids see the sign waving from what feels like a mile away! The people are so kind and they even have a free prize for the kids when you go. The Georgia peach with cream is our favorite! My son eats all the crazy sour combinations. They are a definite seasonal must try for the whole family!

The northern lights danced across the US last night. It could happen again Saturday.

Amazing auroras sparked by a massive solar storm — the strongest in decades — set the world abuzz Friday night as colorful glowing light radiated into the skies as far south as Florida and the Bahamas, to the surprising delight of many who waited up and kept watch.

And good news for anyone who missed it: You may get another chance Saturday night or Sunday.

"Overnight, aurora were visible across much of the United States. Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight," the Space Weather Prediction Center said in a Saturday morning update . A later update suggests the possibility of widespread viewing in the U.S. on Sunday too.

(A word of caution, experts have previously told USA TODAY that forecasting space weather is difficult . Researchers must rely on observations of the 93-million-miles-away sun to make their predictions.)

Northern lights are only visible at night time, and experts say it's best to view them away from the hustle and bustle of city life to get the best show. Still, Americans in cities said they could see the lights overnight, including in metro Detroit .

Wisconsinites got to see the lights dance across the sky in green and purple hues. Even residents of downtown Milwaukee caught a glimpse despite the bright city lights obstructing the view.

Will the aurora be visible this weekend?

It could be.

The Space Weather Prediction Center offers an experimental forecast map that showed on Saturday the aurora may be visible Saturday in a wide swath of the U.S., possibly in states including Oregon, Nebraska, Indiana, Pennsylvania and New York. But visibility will depend on shifting factors that include weather.

For Sunday, space weather forecasters said the aurora could become visible again over the northern half of the country, with sights extending as far south as Alabama and northern California. The effects of that storm are expected to arrive Sunday morning ET.

What is the cloud forecast Saturday night? Will clouds block the northern lights?

If you missed the aurora borealis Friday night, you might still catch a glimpse on Saturday or Sunday, depending on where you live. But not if clouds get in the way.

The cloud forecast for Saturday night is generally good for most of America, but some of the people who missed their chance last night due to clouds may have a similar problem Saturday, said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines. Areas that are likely to be cloudy include New England and Mid-Atlantic regions, as well as parts of the Southern Plains, including Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.

“Even just a few breaks in the clouds will allow the aurora to be visible,” Kines said. “There’s always hope.”

Peak visibility time Saturday night will be between 9 p.m. and midnight, with some chance until 2 a.m., Kines said. The best views will be in dark areas away from the light pollution of cities, he said, though some reported seeing the auroras Friday night from metro areas like Milwaukee and Detroit.

Sunday night, if there is any aurora to see, those in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic can rejoice, because Kines said the skies should be clearer.

What is causing the northern lights this weekend?

The spectacle is being caused by geomagnetic storm that erupted from a sunspot cluster on the sun.

The storm was unusually strong — classified as "extreme" (or a G5) storm, the highest level, the  Space Weather Prediction Center  said Friday evening. It's the first G5 storm to hit our planet since 2003.

The geomagnetic storm's effects (which aren't all as pretty as the northern lights) are likely to linger through the weekend. The  Space Weather Prediction Center  said the storm is likely to continue through Sunday.

"There have been reports of power grid irregularities and degradation to high-frequency communications and GPS," the Space Weather Prediction Center said in a Saturday morning update.

Where were the northern lights seen on Friday night?

Across much of the United States and Europe where skies were clear — as far south as Florida, Oklahoma, Texas and Arizona.

To the great disappointment of many in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, cloud cover dimmed or obstructed the stunning display altogether.

Although it's unusual, auroras have been seen in the far southern United States in the past. This happens when a particularly large coronal mass ejection arrives in the Earth's outer atmosphere, triggering a geomagnetic storm, NOAA reports.

On the night of Nov. 5-6, 2001 , aurora displays were seen in Texas and Arizona.

What causes the aurora?

NASA describes an aurora as an "intricate dance of particles and magnetism between the Sun and the Earth."

The Sun's activity creates strong electrical currents known as geomagnetic storms.

These eruptions are mostly happening at a large, complex sunspot cluster, NOAA'S Space Weather Prediction Center said. Sunspots, which increase and decrease on a 11-year cycle, are areas where the magnetic field is about 2,500 times stronger than Earth's.

The reason the auroras move is because of how the Sun's ionized gases interact with the Earth's magnetic field.

In a collaboration with the National Science Foundation and the New Mexico Consortium aurora sightings and photos are being collected at the Aurorasaurus web page.

Why was the aurora borealis so red on Friday?

Mike Theiss, an extreme nature photographer and hurricane storm chaser, who lives in Florida was shocked to see posts Friday night about how far south people were seeing the auroras. To his amazement, he was able to step out of his front door in Key Largo in the Florida Keys and see and photograph the aurora. Hours later he was still incredulous, and surprised at the colors in the aurora.

"I’ve documented the Northern Lights in Iceland, North Dakota, Arctic Circle in Canada but never this red color," Theiss said. "This is the first time I’ve seen red."

The multiple colors seen in auroras are related to the types of gas being bombarded at various levels above the Earth. Auroras occur within one of Earth's upper atmosphere layers, the thermosphere, according to the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research.

Solar particles trapped there interact with various gas molecules, such as nitrogen and oxygen, according to the research corporation's website. Oxygen gives off green and red lights, while nitrogen glows blue and reddish purple. For example, nitrogen gas glows blue at 75 to 110 miles altitude.

The less common red auroras form from interacting with higher altitude oxygen molecules, the website explains.

'Two incredible spectacles of the universe': Northern lights come about a month after eclipse

Seeing the aurora amazed Antonella Fruscione, an astrophysicist at Harvard University. She sent photos of the sight as well as the April total solar eclipse to her friends in Italy.

"And I sent them the picture that I took at the solar eclipse and I said, 'Can you imagine how fortunate I was this year, one month apart, I see these two incredible spectacles of the universe,'" she recalled telling them.

The phenomena seen Friday and possibly Saturday night is unusual, she said.

"It's a very rare occurrence, especially because last night it was really visible," Fruscione said.

What was the Halloween storm in October 2003?

Over two decades ago in late October 2003, three massive sunspot groups appeared on the sun's surface with little warning, accompanied by 17 major solar flares, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.

Satellites, radio and GPS systems went on the fritz around the world, causing some major disruptions. But it also offered a stunning view of the auroras as far south as California and Florida. People in Australia and Mediterranean countries even caught a glimpse.

The Northern Lights could be visible over part of the United States this weekend thanks to unusually strong solar flare activity over the week.

Last year, the Northern Lights was captured twice in both in North Carolina and in Virginia. On March 24, sightings were reported along the Blue Ridge Parkway just outside of Asheville.

There were also reports of sightings in Virginia. Peter Forister Photography shared his stunning images with WXII 12 after capturing the explosion of colors over the Shenandoah Valley.

“This night will go down in my memory as one of the most unexpected but remarkable experiences I've had living in Virginia,” Peter Forister posted on his Facebook page . The images were captured near the Big Meadows in the Shenandoah Valley.

Additional sightings were reported a month later along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Craggy Gardens area and also along the parkway in Floyd, VA.
