HELP! NO Start, THEFT Light!

2003 excursion theft light flashing

  • Add to quote

2000 7.3 Limited Excursion 4x4. Wont start. Cranks Fine, even hooked up to other truck to jump start but cranks excellent with or without jump start. All dash lights come on as usual then go off after a few seconds. When I crank, the 'THEFT' light flashes until I turn off key. Last night I: Disconnected and cleaned battery posts and terminals then Played around with keypad on outsied driver side door to try an figure out the code which I don't have. Now this morning it won't start. Any help please. I will be searching posts for solutions in the mean time. Thanks

Re: Help...Anti-Theft Code preventing Start You might try this procedure from SuperChips to reset the PATS system on your PSDX. I know I had to do this every time I programmed with my EX. It is a pain but it works. Am thinking that the PATS sees any tuner as an invasion and needs to be reset. If you have a Diesel Excursion, there is a quicker way to reset the PATS system. THIS ENTIRE PROCEDURE IS CRITICAL: Ensure this procedure is started with the KEY COMPLETELY OUT OF IGNITION. This technique will only work on a Ford Diesel Excursion 1 Ensure that the key is OUT OF THE IGNITION to begin. 2 Insert the key into the ignition. 3 Turn the ignition key ON, DO NOT START THE VEHICLE. 4 Look at the Theft light on the dash. The Theft Light will be blinking rapidly…approx 3 blinks per second, indicating Theft. 5 After a period of 30-45 Seconds, the Theft Light will blink slowly and /or go out. 6 Now, turn the key to the OFF position and remove it from the ignition. DO NOT TRY TO START THE VEHICLE. 7 Pause 10 seconds with the key out of ignition. 8 Insert the key into ignition. 9 Turn the key ON, but DO NOT START THE VEHICLE. 10 Look at the Theft light on the dash. The Theft Light will be blinking slowly…1 blink per second (normal mode). 11 After the Wait to Start light goes out, the customer can then crank and start the vehicle normally. __________________ Happy trails, Rich Kimball Click to expand...

  • Insert one key into the ignition and turn the key to the on position for 3 seconds (do not crank the engine)
  • Turn the key to the off position
  • Remove the key
  • Insert the second key and turn the ignition to run for three seconds (do not crank the engine)
  • Wait 10 seconds. The theft light will blink every few seconds - this is normal.
  • Try to start the truck...

Rapidly flashing theft light and no start after DP-Tuner!

2003 excursion theft light flashing

  • Add to quote

2003 Excursion Limited Installed a single file (no switch) F5. Contacts are clean chip is installed correctly (not my first install). Get everything back together and turn the key on. Normal Theft then after a few seconds the theft light flashes rapidly. The truck will crank over but no attempt to start. After 30-45 second the theft light will go out but no change I have found a few similar issues with the recommendation to relearn the key to the PATS system and that has not worked. Any suggestions? Diane and Jody are out of the office.

Also just noticed that after the 30-45 seconds of fast flashing it stops but then makes one long flash and 6 short flashes. Code 16?

2003 excursion theft light flashing

Bump for an answer...

Sounds like an issue with the PATS and the chip. The chip might not have the correct file in it. I assume the truck starts without the chip, correct?

Yes it starts with the chip out. Diane and Jody are on it now so I will let you know how it turns out. They are gonna check Monday if the PATS was set in the chip.

It wasn't. you're gonna have to send it back for a reflash.

Diane said Jody was going to check it Monday and if its not right he is going to send out another chip Monday and I can send this chip back later. I hope that is all it is. I've got about 4 hours into this chip and I can't bill any of them!

2003 excursion theft light flashing

I have a 2003 Mustang GT. Had the same problem.....turn over and and over but no crank, THEFT light flashing very fast. Took it to dealer, they couldnt find anything wrong with anything....PATS was good or whatever.. Finally figured out that when I tried to start it with the steering wheel tilted "UP", it was stretching some connection in there, making the Security Theft thing do its thing. Try tilting the wheel down and give it a spin....that's what i've been doing since 2003 :blah:

2003 excursion theft light flashing

my dads had the same thing.. but has a SCT.. we just install the tune turn the key on without starting for about 45secs or till the theft light slows down..turn key off than turn it back on and wts than start it.. but like i said its for a o1 with the SCT Xcal2

SeeYa said: The chip has PATS enabled so we're doing some testing. I don't have this issue with my EX so we're just as puzzled. Tim, you'll have another chip coming tomorrow to see if it may be a flakey chip. Diane Click to expand...

can't you just unplug the pats module above the accelerator pedal?

bbbxcursion said: I forgot about that, I did that on my excursion. Click to expand...

I forgot about that, I did that on my excursion.

Here is an update! Jody and Diane sent the chip out 2nd Day Air and got it Wednesday:rockwoot: (very nice thank you!). Customer came in today I slapped the chip in there and its good to go! Theft acts normal, truck starts and run great! So I just have to send the first chip back via the return label they sent with the second chip! Jody and Diane WELL DONE!! You took all needed steps to solve the situation and I thank you!

Glad u got it worked out.

Ford F150 Theft Light Blinking Won’t Start – [9 Troubleshooting Methods]

By Kevin Shaw

Updated on May 29, 2023

On May 29, 2023

Is your Ford F150 theft light blinking won’t start? I know how frustrated you are! Don’t worry. I am here to help you fix your truck.

In this article, I will talk about the possible reasons for this problem and how to troubleshoot it.

If your Ford F150 doesn’t start and the theft light blinks rapidly, the PCM power relay is the most common reason for this problem. Other reasons can be bad key transponder, dead key fob battery, bad fuses, and bad PCM.

Please Note: You can follow this guide for any Ford F150 regardless of the model and year.

Common years with this problem are: Ford F150 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010.

Before trying any of the following troubleshooting methods, disconnect the battery and wait for about 10 to 15 minutes as a first solution. Then reconnect the battery, and see if that solves this problem.

And if that doesn’t work out, try to figure out the fault codes associated with the actual problems.

The Two-Digit PATS Fault Code or DTC (1 : Flash Count)

While the ignition is ON, you may see dashes in the odometer, and the theft light keeps blinking. It’s telling you a code associated with the problems you need to fix. So how do you find the code?

First, the light will blink rapidly for about 30 to 45 seconds and go off. Then it will flash for once and will pause for a few seconds.

Finally, it will blink a few more times (1 to 6 times) at a regular pace, and you need to count those final blinks.

Let’s say the count is six. Then it’s the trouble code 16. If there are multiple problems, the light will again repeat the pattern to represent a different code.

And each of the fault codes signifies a different problem with your Ford F150. For example, see the DTCs in the following table.

9 Reasons Why Ford F150 Theft Light Blinking Won’t Start!

Now, here are the possible problems and solutions to the problem of Ford F150 won’t start and the theft light blinking.

1. Key Transponder Issues

Sometimes, your transponder key can trigger the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) that immobilizes the engine.

If you have any metal objects or electronic devices on the same keyring you put your truck key on, that might interfere with the microchip of the transponder.

So remove all these objects, and start the engine, which may solve this problem.

Another reason could be the transponder chip is damaged. If you’re trying to start your engine with a bad transponder key, the theft light starts flashing, and the engine won’t start.

Try with your other keys, and if it starts the engine, the previous key has a transponder issue and is probably a damaged key.

2. Unprogrammed or Wrong Key

Did you program a spare key recently? Did you have all the existing keys with you in the cab?

If you didn’t, then all the absent keys are now incompatible, and the system can’t recognize them anymore. Hence the PATS got triggered!

In that case, you need to use a correctly programmed key to start the engine and reprogram those incompatible keys.

Also, you might be using the wrong key! Make sure that is not the case.

3. Dead Key Fob Battery

You should check out the battery if you’re using a key fob. The dead battery can cause this issue.

Replace your key fob’s battery, which may disable the theft light.

4. Damaged Door Lock Cylinder

If this anti-theft flashing issue happens on an older generation of Ford F150, there is a chance the door lock cylinder is damaged.

Check whether you can latch the door properly, and if the locking cylinder is not latching, the PATS senses it as a theft attempt.

So replace the door lock cylinder, which will stop triggering the PATS.

5. Bad Fuses

Open the fuse box (battery junction box) under the hood, and test the fuses. You can start with the number 18 fuse (15 Amp).

There might be one or multiple blown-out fuses that are causing this problem. Replace them, and you may get your truck running fine.

And, don’t forget the fuses in the central junction box inside the cabin. Test those fuses as well. You can start with the number 2 fuse (5 Amp).

6. Bad PCM Power Relay

The Powertrain Control Module is one of the most critical components for your engine to work properly. And the PCM power relay is a part of that.

If the relay doesn’t work or malfunctions, there will be no communication between the engine and the PCM. Hence the theft light will start flashing.

So you must check the PCM relay if your Ford F150’s theft light keeps blinking and doesn’t start. You can try swapping it with another identical relay and see if there are any changes in the behavior.

If the relay is damaged, you need to get a new PCM relay to solve the problem.

7. Bad PCM Power Diode

The PCM power diode keeps the voltage running only one way towards the PCM power relay, and if the diode is damaged, there might be issues in the circuit.

So it’s essential to check whether it’s in good condition. And it’s replaceable.

8. Bad Fuel Pump Relay

The fuel pump receives power when the fuel pump relay works appropriately. So, ensure the fuel pump relay sends power to the pump.

If it’s a bad relay, you need to replace it, which should solve the problem.

If none of the solutions I have mentioned above is solving the issue. Then it might be the PCM itself.

If there are dashes in the odometer, and no communication with your scan tool, then it’s probably a bad PCM issue.

So go ahead and replace the PCM. You must perform the parameter reset or relearn procedure to allow the new PCM to work.

And this should disable the theft light blinking and allow your engine to fire up.

Final Words

So there you have it. I have discussed all the potential causes and the troubleshooting methods for the Ford F150 theft light blinking won’t start.

If you have had no luck with the suggested methods, you need to go the expensive route: visit the dealership or contact an expert mechanic.

Have you heard of the code 15 in the f150 2003 I have replaced the key ignition pod with a new on so I don’t know if the keys that came with the ignition pod the thing you put your key into it’s aftermarket the old one was damaged and broken and the ignition key was missing ( stolen)after putting in the new key pod and got that flashing light once and then five times I assume for the new key not programmed into pats memory ( locksmith I guess ) please help I can’t afford the dealership to fix this issue and I am clueless as to how and what the issue is.,

Could try disconnecting BOTH batteries then touch the positive and negative cables together to drain any residual power which may reset the memory. This worked on my Ex when my remote start/alarm system would lock all the doors each and every time I opened and closed a door. Sent from AutoGuide.com App

1, Try turning the key and moving the shift from park to drive and back. Then try starting it again!

2. Try your spare key in case the chip has failed in your primary key.

3. If you get it started, go to an Auto Zone and get a computer read out to see if it will tell you what the issue is.

UPDATE 6/20/29

Use the trunk to first lock the driver door then unlock it.

Some anti-theft lights blink by default ( a small red light near the dash, for example is there to warn off thieves ). If this is some other type of light then disconnect your battery (negative first then positive) for 30 minutes and reconnect in reverse order (positive then negative). This should reset the computer. You will loose presets in your radio.

First off the time that the battery is disconnected keeps getting shirter by 5 mins secondly its a pats security system issue just turn the key to the on position for about ten mins your problem should go away

I had the same problem..I tried every one of these other methods with no luck. Took me a month to figure it out and luckily I could still start my vehicle and bypass using ignition key by touching something long and metal, e.g. A screwdriver, to these 2 bolts under the hood and start it that way but what a pain everytime I needed to start it.. I finally found this answer in an old forum somehwere and it worked!

Answer: Anti theft system had been activated, you need to push the 7/8 9/0 keypad buttons at the same time then enter the unlock code to disable the system. Sometimes this can also work by using the door key to first lock the drivers door then unlock it.

Whats the unlock code

Apr 29, 2020 by DeBriya Evans

I had an 01 expedition with anti-theft light blinking and took it to dealer to reset. I was told fuel pump was bad. Anti-theft shuts down the fuel pump so they're idiots. Transponder in on the ignition switch was not reading chip in key so I dug the chip out of the key and removed transponder from ignition and taped the chip to the transponder and stuck it up under the dash out of the way. No problem since.
