Having an RV with unevenly distributed weight can spell disaster if you’re not careful, and put the trailer and everyone on vacation in danger.

While a travel trailer is built to distribute weight evenly when empty or dry, it’s up to you to pack your rig well in order to avoid unsafe road conditions. Swaying and rocking back and forth can be extremely dangerous, and this tends to be caused by unevenly weighted rigs.

Take your time when packing up your travel trailer, especially if you’ve not done it before. I find it useful to make a list of everything I need to pack so I don’t end up bringing items I don’t need which will increase weight unnecessarily.

While you may not think of this as a big deal or concern when you first start camping, it will soon become apparent to you once you walk around in your RV without stabilizers and it’s a bit wobbly! Some new travel trailers come with built-in stabilizers, and if so, you’re lucky as you won’t need to worry about making another purchase.

Best Overall: Forest River Grey Wolf

With 13 different floor plans for the Forest River Grey Wolf travel trailer and 5 layout options for the toy hauler model, there’s plenty to love about the Grey Wolf. Since all of the options available weigh less than 8,000 pounds, it’s no surprise the Grey Wolf is a top contender in the mid-size travel trailer world.

The Grey Wolf doesn’t appear to have very many bells and whistles from the outside, but after living and camping full-time, the sheer number of these rigs I see at campgrounds must have something to do with their reliability and popularity!  Their largest travel trailer model comes in at almost 37 feet and weighs just over 6,000 pounds.

This is a significant amount of travel trailer living space, ideal for both my partner and me to live comfortably, and there’s even ample space for our furry companion too! As you can see in the tour video above, the interior of the Grey Wolf is sleek, modern, and surprisingly spacious.  Speaking of space, there are ample sleeping arrangements with this travel trailer, such as multiple sleeping sofas, bunkhouse models, and more depending on specific floorplans.

I love the overall flexibility and versatility of the Grey Wolf, as it’s possible to purchase either the standard travel trailer model or the toy hauler rig so I can bring adventure gear like our SUP boards and kayak along for the adventure.  There are smaller Grey Wolf trailers too, some as small as 20 feet in length, which may be a better option for solo travelers, or those looking for a smaller rig for weekend getaways than full-time travel. 

Some floor plans offer a full tub, an 11 cubic-foot residential fridge, and relaxing electric fireplaces, which I would use every winter evening to snuggle up in the comfortable seating areas. The addition of the Base Camp package is something I would opt for to improve my experience on the road, as it includes underbelly armor, outdoor hot and cold showers, a quick-connect RV grill for effortless outdoor cooking, and more.

It would be nice for some of the optional extra features such as the off-road tire addition with the Adventure Package to be standard since these aren’t the cheapest rigs out there. However, I guess it’s awesome to have these kinds of options available in the first place. 

Forest River offers a comprehensive roadside assistance package as well as a limited warranty, allowing me to confidently put my faith in their rigs. Each and every travel trailer goes through detailed inspections before being shipped, so I can rest easy in Forest River’s hand and trust their rigs will last for many camping seasons to come.

Best On A Budget: Jay Flight SLX 8

It’s hard to comprehend all the perks of this Jayco travel trailer, especially for the price! With 7 unique floor plans on offer, the Jayco Jay Flight SLX is a wonderful travel trailer for RVers seeking a reliable brand and large living space, but at a budget-friendly price. The smallest floorplan is the 154BHW which weighs just shy of 3,000 lbs and measures 18 feet on the dot! This layout may not be the best fitting for a large family, but thanks to the innovative bunk beds, it’s possible to sleep four! 

Jayco is proud to offer some of the most solid frames in the RV business. With trusses made from structural steel and a seamless roof with a 20-year warranty, I trust I’m in good hands with Jayco. Their customer service is also recognized for being supportive and helpful, which is what I need from RV manufacturers. 

The interior of each of the Jay Flight models is far more appealing than I would expect from such budget-friendly trailers. Standard interior equipment includes solid hardwood cabinets, a premium multimedia sound system, durable and fashionable laminate flooring, and residential countertops. These high-quality finishes and thoughtful touches work well to make these trailers feel more like a house than an RV!

Solar isn’t a standard option with the Jay Flight which is a little disappointing since an increasing number of RVers want to head off-grid and support their electricity usage. However, solar power is possible with the purchase of Jayco’s Overlander 1 Solar Package which offers a 200W panel and a 30-amp controller. Since these rigs are so budget-friendly, it may even be feasible to dive right in and also opt for the Baja package which boasts Goodyear off-road tires, stabilizer jacks, powder-coated wheel fenders, and more!

Many models feature cozy bunk beds with privacy screens, efficient and compact outdoor kitchens, and ample storage both inside and out, so there’s no more arguing over the delegation of belongings and their temporary homes in the RV.  Jayco is also one of the best RV manufacturers in terms of warranty which also helps bring about plenty of peace!

The Jay Flight comes complete with a two-year limited warranty, a three-year structural warranty, and countless individual warranties for the many features and finishes inside and out of the trailer.  While the Jay Flight may not quite have the luxurious edge of the Airstream Flying Cloud, there’s still lots to appreciate with the Jay Flight, and it’s hard to argue with such a friendly budget! 

Best For Boondocking: Forest River Ibex

It’s possible to still hit the road and be adventurous, even in a travel trailer under 8,000 pounds! In fact, all 11 floorplans on offer with the Forest River Ibex are all under 6,000 pounds, with countless boondocking perks for campers wanting to explore nature and not spend days at the campground . Off-grid camping is how I prefer to spend most of my time, and the Ibex is the ideal rig, equipped with everything needed for a successful boondocking experience. 

To kick things off, the Ibex features a significantly higher clearance than many of the other trailers on our list. Also, unlike our last option, the Jay Flight SLX, all-terrain tires come standard, which signifies how much thought Forest River has poured into creating the Ibex. Some of the floorplans such as the 19QBS have solar already installed, and for ultimate off-griding, I can upgrade to a 500W solar setup with a 3,000W inverter so I know everything on-board can be powered whenever needed.

Forest River also offers toy hauler models of the Ibex and there are 3 layouts available. The largest one is the 24MTH with a UVW of 6,660 pounds and an exterior length of 30′ 0″. This flexibility from Forest River is one of the reasons they’ve been in the RV game for so long, offering solo travelers, couples, and families alike, reliable rigs able to keep everyone safe while magical memories are made.

I’m particularly drawn to Forest River’s high standards, which complete the Ibex with Azdel walls, underbelly insulation, and a 15-year warranty for the seamless roof. It seems this rig is built to last for generations to come, and will remain a classic, attractive rig on the road.

The main drawback to the Ibex has to be its rather beige interior, but I think this can easily be brightened up with some trinkets, photos on the wall, and familiar belongings.  All of the appliances in the Ibex are stainless steel, making them modern and easy to clean which is a huge bonus in my eyes, especially when the whole family comes around to visit! 

Best of all, the Ibex comes complete with Forest River’s customer service as well as various warranties to support the robust rig. Having solar and a cold weather package as standard features? That’s a great perk to have in a travel trailer under 8000 pounds if I do say so myself!

Highest Sleeping Capacity: Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite

As a division of Forest River, Coachmen has many RVs and travel trailers to offer that are both built to a high standard and also won’t break the bank. The Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite has much more than just affordability to offer, as these models are also lightweight and have impressively high sleeping capacities. This is great news for large families or those looking to head out into the wilderness with a group of friends for the weekend. 

There are 13 unique Apex floor plans, with some measuring 8 feet wide and others 7.5 feet wide. Having the ability to drive a narrow rig can be beneficial, especially for full-timers like me who live in their home on wheels and sometimes stumble upon challenging roads and questionable terrain.  The largest Apex floor plan is the 300BHS which weighs just under 6,000 pounds dry, has an exterior length of 34′ 5″, and has the astonishing capability of sleeping 10 people!

Since this is less than 35 feet in length, it’s an ideal size for most RV parks and campgrounds, so I can dodge any hassle when I arrive at the campground towing my Apex Ultra-Lite.  Speaking of floor plans, many Apex models feature fireplaces, entertainment centers, and theatre seating to bring plenty of comfort to any vacation. Many floor plans also feature sectional sofas, expansive kitchens, and residential-sized bathrooms that make traveling with others an absolute breeze.

That isn’t where the perks stop, however. The Apex also has an entirely fiberglass exterior so I don’t have to worry about battling the elements while camping. Since outdoor speakers and a small solar setup are also present with the Apex, it seems Coachmen really have tried to cover everything! I like that there’s the option to upgrade to a 50 amp service and add another AC as these are features I think are well worth investing in, especially for full-time life on the road.

The Apex has a modest interior with classy hardware cabinetry and a two-tone color scheme. It’s a little plain for my personal taste, but nothing some simple wall decor, cushions, and throws wouldn’t spruce up! Compared to other RVs such as Jayco’s two and three-year warranties, Coachmen’s one-year warranty is a little disappointing. Luckily, they have a roadside assistance program and an owner’s club which helps make up for the small warranty!

Most Storage: Winnebago Voyage

Winning RV News’ award for the best travel trailer in 2022, it’s no surprise there’s a lot on offer with the Winnebago Voyage. This travel trailer is under 8,000 pounds and has innovative storage solutions fit for families and travel groups. The two largest floorplans sadly creep a little above 8,000 pounds, but there are 4 other layout options, weighing far less. I love the variety of floorplans as it makes finding a suitable layout easy, and there’s a range of lengths too which is great for RVers storing their trailers outside with limited space.

A kitchen truly is the heart of any home for me, and this is no different in RVs! The kitchens in each Voyage floorplan are attractive and adorned with residential-style cabinetry and a full-size refrigerator, great for keeping food fresh on the road. Nearly every Winnebago Voyage model features washer and dryer prep along with walk-around king beds, making me feel even more at home. 

Claiming it has storage around every corner as well as walk-in pantry options, the Voyage is a winner just from sheer square footage alone. It even offers Murphy bed options allowing for additional storage. RVs can be a range of sizes, and smart storage is the best way to utilize limited space even the most modest-sized rigs.

The floor plans, while not all of them are under 8,000 pounds, offer a lot of unique positioning, no doubt in an effort to maximize storage. Having a fridge located in a slide-out is not often seen in RVs, but I think it helps maximize the interior living space!  Winnebago has been around for a long time, and they know how to care for their customers.

With competitive warranties,  Winnebago promises their RVs are fit to take on big adventures with the whole family for many years to come. Winnebago is known for manufacturing rigs that don’t cost the earth, however, even the smallest Voyage floorplan, the V2427RB, starts at over $60k which is still a substantial investment! It’s far cheaper than other travel trailers on the market, and even though the Voyage is a relatively new rig, it’s already making waves.

With unique floor plan choices and a huge amount of storage, this travel trailer ticks a bunch of boxes for me and is worth the price for a reliable name and durable trailer.

Best For The Whole Family: Jayco Jay Feather  

I mentioned the Jay Feather travel trailer earlier when talking about Jayco’s most popular models. This particular RV has been a crowd favorite for decades, and with 10 floorplans, all weighing under 8,000 pounds, there’s ample choice! Since all of the layouts of this travel trailer are lightweight, towing isn’t a big concern.

The variety of sizes with the Jay Feather is impressive, with the smallest floorplan measuring just 24′ long, and the largest, 33′ 2″. This allows multiple people to fit inside the travel trailer , which I need as sometimes things can get a bit too tight when the whole family shows up at the campground to join in with the fun! I like that Jayco hasn’t put interior design on the backburner with the Jay Feather, and the inside is simply beautiful.

The 27BHB floorplan can sleep up to nine individuals, whilst also boasting a large indoor kitchen and handy outside kitchen, a pantry, a full bathroom with shower, and ample storage throughout.  A Jayco rig is always built to last. With vacuum-bonded floors and walls, I can rest easy knowing leaking is unlikely, which is the kind of reassurance I need as I travel year-round come rain or shine!

The Jay Feather also comes with a one-piece, seamless roof with a 20-year warranty, so I can enjoy the trailer season after season.  There are two interior design options on this rig as well, though they are both a bit similar. However, the cool greys and modern farmhouse design appeal to a wide variety of people, especially when paired with dark wood trim and finishes. Speaking of space, this travel trailer has ample storage, both inside and out.

There’s overhead master bedroom wardrobe space and a kitchen that rivals many studio apartment kitchens. Plus, the bathroom is fantastic, with a huge rounded shower that truly stands out and is a rarety in smaller RVs and travel trailers!

Most Stylish: Airstream Flying Cloud

RVs aren’t always the best-looking vehicles on the road, however, there’s something undeniably eye-catching about an Airstream, and the Flying Cloud is no exception. Although priced at nearly $100k, the Airstream has a classic style with robust foundations beneath. Airstream travel trailers are known for their striking designs, both inside and out, and the Flying Cloud has plenty to showcase.

Besides the silver bullet design of the Flying Cloud, I noticed an immediate lightness upon entering. This is thanks to the light wood interior and leather finishes that seem to make the space come to life without being too bold. Style is infused into every floor plan of the Flying Cloud, and since there are 8 layouts to choose from, it’s not hard to find the best match. 

Most of the floorplans are under 8,000 pounds, and some even have unique labels such as “office” or “bunk”, adding to the versatility of this travel trailer. Although the aluminum shell catches my eye from the offset, the interior of the Airstream Flying Cloud is something to be just as impressed with. L ight wood walls, cabinetry, and trim, all aid in making the space feel high-end. Quality appliances and a full-size fridge in the kitchen make cooking on the road an absolute joy. 

Airstream makes great use of space, especially given their uniquely shaped rigs. Among the floorplans, it’s possible to find U-shaped dinettes and beds along with convertible furniture, all of which are tear, stain, and scratch-resistant. There’s also a fantastic level of climate control happening inside the Airstream Flying Cloud, and with quiet and efficient heating and cooling , my partner and I will always feel comfortable, no matter the season.

Owning an Airstream becomes almost like a way of life, and many Airstream owners can attest to this. This is also true given how long Airstream trailers last. Between warranties and quality construction, a Flying Cloud should last a lifetime.  The main drawback to the Flying Cloud as I touched upon earlier, has to be the price. Most Airstreams are out of the average RVer’s budget, however, those who can afford a classic trailer such as the Flying Cloud won’t be disappointed. 

Best For Couples: Heartland Mallard RV

Heartland may not be the best-known brand of travel trailers, but they do make sturdy, efficient ones such as the Mallard RV that’s ideal for couples and even small families alike. The Mallard travel trailer is ideal for couples given its small size and ease of towing since it’s just over 22′ in length and weighs 4,534 pounds. This travel trailer is small, but Heartland has still jam-packed the Mallard with a wide range of features. 

This rig has an open concept, allowing for ample floor space, great for when flurry companions come on board for summer vacation. There are 14 various floorplans to choose from, all of which are under 8,000 pounds except for the largest floorplan, the M335, with a dry weight of just over 8,000 pounds. Each floorplan is unique, yet all have a high-end feel with attractive kitchen spaces equipped with infinity countertops and a stainless sink. 

Even the smaller floorplans can sleep a minimum of  3 people, so although this trailer is perfect for couples due to its compact size, a small family can get cozy in a Mallard RV too! The aerodynamic design of the Mallard helps when towing on the road, and the power awning and exterior lights, mean the outdoors can be enjoyed no matter the time of day!

The two interior design options are stunning, although it would be nice to have a couple more options for those who fancy some bolder colors. However, it’s easy to personalize an RV, and once you’ve been on the road for a few days, it’ll feel like home in no time. I’m drawn to the addition of slides across the various floorplans, as they help open up the space so much more. But slides are another component that needs maintaining , so don’t forget this when choosing your lightweight travel trailer!

Ideal For Solo Travel: Grand Design RV Imagine AIM

Weighing as little as 3,600 pounds, the Grand Design RV Imagine AIM is an ideal choice for solo travelers looking for a trailer under 8,000 pounds. The AIM can be towed effortlessly by even the most modest of SUVs and still has a wealth of features able to bring comfort and functionality to any camping trip. Constructed with fully laminated walls, along with a double insulated floor, roof, and front cap, this small but mighty rig has great temperature control, ideal for all-season travel.

The AIM has four floorplans, ranging in length from 19′ 11″ to 21′ 11″, so towing the trailer shouldn’t be too daunting, and it can fit on a small driveway for storage too! The 15RB layout is the second smallest and packs plenty of punch for solo travelers. The interior is surprisingly light and airy, but the booth dinette helps bring some much-needed comfort to the space. I love that there’s still a full bathroom with shower, skylight, and even storage space for linens, as this means there’s no compromising on home comforts like a toilet or shower.

The queen-sized Murphy bed allows for more space during the day when it isn’t needed, and the pass-thru storage is a game-changer for keeping outdoor equipment and spare gear out of the way. The kitchen is quite basic and offers the essentials such as countertops, storage, a two-burner stovetop, and stainless steel sink. I’d like to have a bit more prep space and an oven on board for baking up sweet treats, but I believe anything is possible with just good ingredients, a sturdy pan, and a stovetop!

This Grand Design Imagine AIM isn’t the one for large families or those wanting to tow a big, mighty travel trailer, but for solo RVers , the AIM is hard to beat and starts at a very friendly price point too! Rving can cost a substantial amount, and if you’re leaning towards towing a trailer, it’s vital to opt for one your vehicle can handle rather than having to replace your tow vehicle too! Overall, the Imagine AIM is a great find that’s gentle on the bank, a breeze to tow, and an attractive rig to haul down the highway.

Final Thoughts

Finding a travel trailer under 8,000 pounds is much easier than you may think. There are even more options than the ones we’ve listed, but these campers are a good place to start the search! No matter your needs, there’s an RV out there able to meet your expectations (and towing capacity!).

Airstream has been a pioneer in the RV industry since its inception in 1931. The Bambi travel trailer line is a masterpiece of maximizing available space while still delivering top-of-the-class features and amenities. The Bambi 22FB is big enough to comfortably sleep four people.

However, the Coleman trailer brand and its legendary utility have been transformed under the Dutchmen RV umbrella. The trailer body is made up of a welded-aluminum-framed, vacuum-bonded laminated side. Its rear walls have a fiberglass exterior siding that is lightweight yet sturdy and well-insulated.

The TAXA Outdoors Mantis 5.2 Overland trailer is an admittedly nontraditional travel trailer. Its unique nature is part of what makes it a good choice for half-ton pickup trucks like the Nissan Titan . It may look a bit like a giant insect, but the Mantis 5.2 Overland camping trailer has everything you need to enjoy a comfortable middle-of-nowhere experience.

Based on the TAXA Mantis 5.2 (the company’s largest floorplan), the Overland edition retains all of the original’s creature comforts and conveniences while inheriting a higher level of off-grid and long-term camping capability.

The Mantis 5.2 Overland travel trailer is loaded with a fully equipped kitchen, a combo furnace heater/hot water system, storage compartments everywhere, and comfortable sleeping accommodations for four people. An optional pop-up rooftop tent can sleep two more.

TAXA Outdoors added some serious rough-road handling features like a 360-degree rotation/three-axis hitch for optimum trailer control on or off-road. The Mantis 5.2 Overland trailer rides on a powder-coated steel chassis with a 5,200-pound-rated Timbren axle-less suspension system and a 4-inch body lift. This setup gives the trailer 14 inches of ground clearance, perfect for off-road camping adventures.

A mix of aluminum composite panels, Baltic Birch plywood, and an aluminum and steel structural skeleton make up the atypical shape of the TAXA Mantis 5.2 Overland travel trailer. On the long list of available features are handy items like acrylic windows with screens and shades, batwing-style awnings, and exterior hot and cold showers. An integrated 12V electrical system, wet bath with cassette toilet, and 8K-BTU A/C make long trips even more comfortable.

How Much Can a Half-Ton Truck Tow?

How much trailer can a half-ton truck — F-150, Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, RAM 1500, Tundra, and Titan — tow ?

As an example, tow ratings for the bestselling Ford F-150 can range from 5,000 to 14,000 pounds. This depends upon cab configuration, truck bed size, 2WD or 4WD, engine size, and the final drive ratios (ring-and-pinion gear set ratios).

The bestselling Ford F-150 cab configuration (according to 2022 model sales) is the SuperCrew. We’ll use that as a starting point. The 2023 Ford F-150 SuperCrew short bed 2WD with a 3.3L V-6 engine and 3.55-ratio axle gears is rated at 5,100 pounds.

On the other end of the scale is the 2023 Ford F-150 SuperCrew short bed 2WD with a 3.5L turbocharged V-6 engine, 3.55 axle gears, and optional payload package scores a 14,000-pound tow rating.

Travel Trailer Terminology You Should Know

There are a few terms that trailer manufacturers use in their specification charts that you should know and understand.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): The maximum permissible weight for a trailer, including all cargo, fluids, LPG, and optional equipment.

Unladen, Dry, Tare, or Base Weight: These all mean the same thing — the total weight of the unloaded trailer in standard equipment trim, with no cargo, fluids (freshwater), or LPG.

Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC): Sometimes referred to as Rated Cargo Load, this is the maximum amount of cargo weight the trailer can safely hold. This includes everything you load into the trailer, full water tanks, filled propane tanks, and batteries.

Tongue or Hitch Weight: The weight the trailer will place upon the hitch of your truck. More than 500 pounds of tongue weight on a half-ton pickup will likely place undue stress on the rear suspension and unload the front end, adversely affecting the truck’s steering and overall handling. In this case, the use of a weight-distributing hitch can redeploy some of the weight from the hitch back to the trailer’s axle(s).

Overall or Exterior Length: Commonly refers to the length of the trailer from the hitch ball-coupler to the back of the rear bumper.

These trailers are nice but where are you suppose to put your clothes? For the last 11 years we were snowbirds. We never had enough closet space. Those little closets beside the bed would only hold 4 shirts.

So come on companies we need more closet space and more counter space. It drives me crazy trying to keep things put away.

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

If you’re thinking about purchasing a travel trailer, it’s imperative to find out whether or not your vehicle is equipped to handle the job.

In this guide, we’ll provide you with a tow rating comparison chart to give you some idea of what to expect from your truck or SUV—or whether you need to invest in a sturdier vehicle for the adventures that await.

How Big Does The Towing Vehicle Need To Be?

Because every vehicle—and every travel trailer, for that matter—is different, there’s no definitive answer to this question. However, we can provide you with some basic guidelines that should point you in the right direction. In general, a car or smaller SUV can safely tow 1500 pounds , while a mid-size SUV or light-duty pickup truck might be able to handle up to 3000 pounds. Meanwhile, full-sized SUVs and half-ton pickup trucks can tow travel trailers that weigh in at 8000 pounds or more . If the vehicle is fully equipped with a specialized tow package, it’s capable of hauling even heavier loads.

Because the tow rating and max payload are closely tied to the axle configuration and engine size, it’s best to take a closer look at the vehicle’s specifications before making a decision. Most importantly, as far as the tow rating is concerned, don’t take the salesman’s word for it when you’re selecting the travel trailer itself. They’re trying to sell you the largest rig you can afford—it won’t make any difference to them if your vehicle can’t handle the weight.

Why It’s Important Not To Overload Your Vehicle

Asking your truck or SUV to tow more than it can handle will lead to numerous issues, both immediately and further down the road. In the short term, you’ll be relinquishing a great deal of control. When you tow too much weight, you won’t be able to steer as effectively. Even more worrisome? If you need to brake suddenly, the vehicle might be too heavy to come to a complete stop in time.

As far as long-term effects are concerned, the braking system will begin to show early signs of wear and tear. The engine is also likelier to overheat, which means a shorter life for your transmission. In short, it’s in your best interests to start with a vehicle that’s up to the job.

Before shopping for a travel trailer (or a truck for towing a travel trailer), you should understand the distinction between the following terms.

• Tongue Weight —How much weight the tongue will put on the hitch
• Curb Weight —Weight of the vehicle without any gear or passengers
• Dry Weight —Weight of the trailer without any gear, passengers, gas, or water

Other Considerations

Bear in mind that if the rig is outfitted with slideouts, the weight increases dramatically. One mechanized slideout can add as much as 800 pounds to the trailer’s dry weight, so pay close attention to the configuration.

Also, take a look at the outside of the trailer. If the exterior walls are perfectly smooth, then it’s constructed of fiberglass. If the walls are bumpy along the edges, you have a “stick-built” trailer with aluminum siding. You can expect a stick-built trailer to weigh nearly 1000 pounds more than a similar-sized model with a fiberglass construction.

Another consideration would be if your looking at purchasing a fifth wheel. A fifth wheel will require additional components in the bed of a heavy duty pickup truck adding weight.

Estimated Weights of Assorted Gear

Here’s a list to help you determine how much you can expect your gear to weigh. Remember that it’s always a good idea to round up when estimating weight—it’s better to assume you have too much weight than to underestimate the amount.

• Full fresh water, gray water, and black water tanks: 1000 pounds
• Propane Tanks: 100 pounds
• Clothing and Linens: About 20 pounds per person
• Battery: 75 pounds
• Food: 80 pounds
• Electronics: 50 pounds
• Tools and Leveling Blocks: 60 pounds
• Cooking Supplies: 200 pounds
• Camping Gear: 50 pounds

If you use this list as a guideline, the necessary gear for a family of four would weigh in at about 1700 pounds. Don’t forget to include the weight of all the passengers in the payload when making your calculations, along with the tongue weight.

Towing Capacity Comparison Chart

If you’re looking for a camper, this chart should help you choose one that can be safely towed behind your existing vehicle. If, on the other hand, you’re shopping for a vehicle that’s best for towing the camper you already have, then you’ll need to flip the weight calculations to determine which size truck or SUV to buy.

Is There A Way To Find Out If The Vehicle Is Equipped For Towing?

First, take a look at the rear bumper to find out if there’s a hitch installed. If not, the vehicle will only be able to tow the minimum weight specified by the manufacturer.

If there is, that’s a good sign—but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the vehicle is equipped with a full tow package. For that, you’ll have to check either the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s plate located on the frame of the driver’s door.

Also, equipment will need to have been added to accommodate a fifth wheel trailer. A goose neck trailer will have its connections in the bed of the truck unlike the setup of a bumper pull trailer.

What Size Travel Trailer Can A F150 Pull?

How Big Of A Travel Trailer Can A Half-Ton Truck Pull?

A half-ton pickup with max payload should be able to tow around 10,000 pounds—enough for an average-sized travel trailer. Most half-ton trucks can accommodate a fifth wheel, but this depends on the bed size.

How Big Of A Travel Trailer Can I Tow With A Chevy 1500?

Trucks in Chevy’s 1500 series can be equipped with a tow package that gives them a maximum load capacity of 11,000 pounds, making them suitable for heavy travel trailers. If the vehicle is outfitted with a larger engine (like the 6.2L V8), the tow rating can be as high as 13,400.

The main difference between a bunk room travel trailer and a bunkhouse travel trailer is the disposition and privacy of this area with bunk beds in the travel trailer floor plan.  

Bunk room travel trailers have a private bedroom with bunk beds. Therefore, a solid door separates the bunk beds in a private bedroom from the rest of the travel trailer.

A bunk room travel trailer may include an entertainment center, a wardrobe and cabinets, a booth dinette, a sofa, and even a bathroom or a half-bath inside the bunk room. Although it should be a luxury bunk room travel trailer floor plan.

Usually, travel trailers with bunk rooms have bedrooms on opposite sides of the RV . So, for example, if the travel trailer floor plan has a rear bunk room, there is a front queen or king master bedroom.

Travel trailers with bunk rooms may have 2, 3, or even 4 bunk beds (called “ quad bunks travel trailers” ), or combine bunk beds with twin beds (no bunks).

On the other hand, if you pay close attention to the bunkhouse travel trailer floor plans you will see the bunk bed area is not separate from the rest of the camper by a solid door . It might be a fabric curtain giving some privacy to the bunkhouse, but there are not enclosed in a private bedroom.

Not very often you will see a travel trailer with a private mid-bunkhouse in the floor plan. It is more common on fifth wheels trailers and some destination campers. Mostly all the travel trailers with bunk rooms are located rear while master bedrooms are in the front of the RVs.

I would say you may find a layout like this one in a fifth wheel, but mid-bunks are not common features for trailers. Hideout 38FKTS is a travel trailer with a mid-bunk room under 10,000 lbs.  As you can see in the floor plan below, the 38FKTS has two entry doors. The front entry door connects the living room area with the fireplace with the front kitchen, pantry, and booth dinette. The theater seats or optional tri-fold sofa and the dinette are located in the longest slide-out of this RV.

If we move to the rear of this camper, and across the second entry door, as we mentioned before the 38FKTS  is a mid bunk room travel trailer and the second slide-out bunk bed is part of this bunkhouse room equipped with a desk, cabinets, and a wardrobe.

Down the hallway, next to the bunk room, there is a full dry bathroom with a radius shower.

If you’re considering buying a travel trailer or fifth wheel, you’ll need a truck with towing capabilities. There are plenty of trucks to choose from, and each brand and model will be different. 

Choosing the proper tow vehicle can feel overwhelming. This guide will break down each step of the process when trying to find the right truck to tow your rig.

Truck Brands 

It’s best to keep an open mind when it comes to choosing your tow vehicle. Try to put any automaker brand loyalty aside, since limiting your truck options can affect the type of trailer you are able to tow. 

Automaker quality changes over time and manufacturers constantly develop new features, like towing safety technologies. Manufacturers build vehicles with the same chassis, drivetrain, and design for approximately 4 to 7 years, a period typically known as a generation. When you hear that “the new-gen Tundra is coming out in 2021,” that means it will be on a whole new platform and the truck will be completely overhauled. From year to year and within the same generation, manufacturers will also make minor updates to bumpers, grilles, headlights, and other features to make the same truck slightly new and improved. 

If you love the current generation of the truck you are eyeing, look to see how far into the cycle it is. If there’s a new generation coming out next year, the current one will be discounted. Or, the truck you love could be a model from the prior generation and there may be major improvements coming out soon with the new generation. 

Truck manufacturers don’t all change generations at the same time. For example, Ford updated the generation of the “F” series trucks in 2016 and it’s the current generation manufactured today. RAM was next to come out with its new generation in 2018, and GM followed in 2019 with the current Silverado/Sierra. This allows for increased competition and to keep truck models fresh to consumers. So, if you’re a fan of Ford trucks, know that Ford will most likely overhaul its trucks in a few years, before RAM and GM. 

If you are open to any brand, then you can shop around for the right combination of cost and features to find the perfect truck within your budget.

The Importance of Truck Towing Capacity and Payload

Towing capacity is perhaps the most important consideration when choosing your towing vehicle. However, it can be confusing to compare truck models. Automakers compete in torque and toughness, all trying to offer greater towing capacity without crushing the fuel economy. 

Just because an automaker claims to be “Best in Class,” that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right fit for you—or that the truck you’re looking at is able to live up to the hype. Within the same model of truck, there is a wide range of towing capabilities.

The most capable version of a truck is often the one with fewer luxury options. Generally, a heavier truck with additional upgrades will have a reduced ability to carry cargo. If you opt for these things, they will typically reduce your truck’s towing numbers. For example, off-road suspension—which can be found in Chevy’s Trailboss, RAM’s Rebel, and Ford’s Raptor—is softer and doesn’t handle heavy payloads as well. Luxury features such as leather, sun/panoramic roofs, and bigger cabs all add weight to the standard truck version, meaning less payload capacity. 

Engine options also impact towing capacity. A smaller engine means better fuel economy, but it will have less towing capacity than larger engines.

While tow capacity rankings change from year to year, it’s important to spend some time comparing the towing capacity of different truck models. Automakers including Ford, RAM, General Motors, Toyota, and Nissan adopted a uniform method for testing and rating the towing capacity of their pickup trucks, beginning with their 2015 models, which makes it easier to compare them.

Once you have a few trucks in mind, the best way to understand the specific truck’s towing capacity is to look at the driver’s side door jamb sticker. This contains tire information and payload capacity for the truck—arguably the most important number for towing. At the dealership, look at a different trim level of that same truck and you’ll see how the payload varies.

Whichever truck you pick, your towing vehicle must have a towing capacity higher than the trailer’s GVWR. Keep in mind that weight added to your towing vehicle, such as passengers and cargo, increases your GVW and factors into your vehicle’s GVWR. Head to a truck scale to get an accurate measurement of your GVW and then compare that to your GVWR.

It’s extremely important to understand payload capacity, which is the amount that the truck can hold in terms of cargo. This includes you and your family’s weight, any other passengers (including pets), gear in the cab and bed of the truck, and the weight of the hitch. It’s very common for people to go over payload without realizing it when it comes to RV towing because RVs typically have more tongue weight than boats and other types of trailers. 

When a truck is carrying too much payload, the rear suspension isn’t level. This is called sag and can be very dangerous. The nose of the truck will be higher and the steering will feel light. If the truck can’t handle the RV’s tongue weight properly, then the RV will also be unlevel with the nose down. Towing safety is incredibly important as overloading your trailer or vehicle can cause a crash.

Considerations When Towing a Fifth Wheel

Since fifth wheels are usually much heavier than comparable trailers, make sure your towing vehicle can support the hitch weight and the tow weight of a fifth wheel. If you’re towing a fifth wheel, you’ll likely need a truck with a more payload and a higher towing capacity than if you have a bumper pull or more traditional travel trailer. 

When shopping for a truck to pull a fifth wheel, it’s recommended to look for one that comes with fifth wheel prep from the factory as this means it will also come with other options that are optimized for towing a camper. If there’s a specific truck that meets your taste and has the capacities to tow your camper, there are aftermarket options for models that aren’t prepped for the fifth wheel to hook up to the bed of the truck.

The truck’s payload also plays an important role in a fifth wheel combination because it has high weights that are transferred to the truck. This is why some people find the need to go from a three-quarter-ton truck to a one-ton—for example, if you have a RAM 2500 HD truck, but the fifth wheel’s pin weight, plus passengers, exceed 3,000 pounds. The average RAM 2500 payload maxes out around 3,000 pounds, but the average RAM 3500 can handle 4,000 pounds.

Towing a trailer or fifth wheel takes raw power, a transmission that’s built to distribute that power, a cooling system to keep everything from melting, brakes to be able to stop it, and axles and suspension to support the weight.

It’s crucial to carefully check the specifications of a truck. Why? The engine, gearing, length, cab style, bed style, axles, and towing packages all affect the truck’s towing capacity. While a properly configured RAM 3500 can tow upwards of 30,000 pounds, that capacity drops to about 11,000 pounds without the right features and options.

Here are the 2020 trucks available in the U.S. ranked by towing capacity in their respective segments.

Note: Keep in mind that base payload numbers listed are from a standard truck. The realistic payload may be slightly lower depending on additional features and options that add weight and reduce payload capacity.

Mid-Size/Compact Trucks

Weekend warriors love compact trucks. They’re great for hauling small campers, boats, and motorcycles with maximum towing capacities ranging from 5,000 to 7,700 pounds.

Heavy-duty trucks are also referred to as three-quarter-ton trucks. If you own a large fifth wheel trailer or a long travel trailer, you should consider this category of trucks. They come with gooseneck and fifth-wheel hitch options that place your load directly over the axle for greater towing capacities in this segment. The added weight of the truck will also help reduce sway and provide a safer towing experience.

Ultra-Duty Trucks

Ultra-duty trucks are the heroes of hauling. If you own an extra-large fifth wheel, you will probably need one of these. Their maximum towing capacity ranges from 20,000 to 32,000 pounds. While powerful, they probably won’t ride as well as lighter trucks.

Ultra-duty trucks come equipped with either single rear wheels (SRW) or dual rear wheels (DRW), also known as dually trucks. If you’re comparing the two, it’s helpful to know that single rear wheel trucks have less payload capacity, but dually trucks cost more to buy and require higher maintenance due to the extra tires. Dually trucks are wider and harder to live with as an everyday driver but handle the RV better, offering more stability on the road

Features to Consider When Purchasing a Truck for Towing

Gas vs. diesel engines .

Diesel engines are great for towing because they give you low-end torque. That’s why they’re so popular with commercial towing businesses. Diesel engines provide a useful combination of everyday driving fuel economy with torque capability for pulling an RV. These engines have similar pulling characteristics to a larger V8 but get better fuel economy and range.

In prior years, diesel engines were limited to heavy-duty trucks, but now you can find lightweight trucks with high-performance diesel engines. There’s also been an increase in mid-size and full-size trucks offering small turbo diesel engines in models like the Chevrolet Colorado / GMC Canyon, Jeep Gladiator, Ford F-150, GM 1500 Silverado and Sierra, and RAM 1500. 

While diesel engines have their benefits, they can add thousands of dollars to the purchase price. For example, you can get the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado (base price $21,300) with a Duramax 2.8L turbo-diesel engine that gives you a 7,700-pound towing capacity. However, the engine upgrade will cost you nearly $4,000.

In the full-size category, a small diesel engine is a premium option. For example, in the Chevrolet Silverado, the small diesel Duramax is $3,670 more than the biggest V8 offered and $6,600 more than the base engine. In the Ford F-150, the small Power Stroke Diesel is also the most expensive option with a $4,000 premium over the base engine.

Pros of a Diesel Truck:

• Higher towing capacity and better towing experience
• Safer descending when towing because the diesel engine has an engine brake feature to help the regular brake system not overheat
• Better fuel economy and range when towing
• Designed for a higher number of operating miles
• Higher resale value in the used market
• More torque makes the truck fun to drive

Cons of a Diesel Truck

• Limited to fuel stations or pumps with diesel gas
• Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) also needs to be filled
• Higher cost of diesel at the pump
• Service and repair costs are higher
• Diesel engine option costs more
• The diesel engine weighs more and reduces payload capacity

Consider how often you’re going to tow your RV. While diesel engines can tow more and may have better fuel economy, you might be better off with a gas engine if you aren’t towing very often.

Four-Wheel Drive

You’ll also want to consider if you need four-wheel drive, or if two-wheel drive will suffice. Nearly all pickups are based on rear-wheel drive platforms, which are designed to move heavy loads.

Traditional four-wheel drive (often called 4×4 or 4WD) is a part-time system that you turn on with a rotary switch, button, or lever when you need it. You can also select a low-range setting for challenging off-road conditions.

Full-time four-wheel drive is more versatile and is optional on some pickups. It kicks in as needed to enhance your traction, and your truck can run indefinitely in that mode without harming the drivetrain.

Here’s the trade-off: Four-wheel drive vehicles are typically a bit heavier because of the weight of the four-wheel drive components. They also usually have a slightly lower towing rating and less fuel efficiency than the same vehicle with two-wheel drive.

Here are some high-performance truck models that have four-wheel drive but less payload and towing capacity because the suspension is softer, designed for trails and sand capability: 

• Ford Raptor to the F-150
• Chevrolet Silverado Trailboss / GMC Sierra AT4
• RAM Rebel and TRX to the RAM 1500
• Toyota TRD Pro trims on the Tundra and Tacoma
• Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and Mojave to the regular Sport with Max Tow
• Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 trim level

If you’re planning to tackle tough terrain, go off-roading, or travel in the winter, you might need the extra grip of four-wheel drive. You don’t want to get stuck on soft ground or a hill with loose gravel wishing you’d gone with the more aggressive powertrain.

When looking for a pickup, you need to consider the three different types of cabs: regular cab (two-door), extended cab (three-door), or crew cab (four-door).

Regular two-door cabs offer some advantages: They’re typically less expensive and are shorter and lighter, giving you an increase in payload. But if you need room for more passengers, consider the extended and crew cabs.

Extended cabs give you additional interior storage. The rear seats may make adults feel cramped but are typically comfortable enough for kids.

Crew cabs with four regular doors give you ample room for seating or cargo, similar to full-sized SUVs. However, these large cabs usually come at the expense of a smaller cargo bed and the least amount of payload versus the other cabs.

Here’s another truck decision you’ll need to make: long- or short-bed pickup? If you choose a short-bed pickup, it will be easier to drive and park when you’re not towing. Parking your trailer at the campground should be easier, too. However, a shorter bed truck also means a shorter wheelbase (the space between the front and rear wheels). The longer the wheelbase of the truck, the better it will be at holding trailer sway steady when towing.

Long-bed trucks will give you more space—and more options. Long bed trucks are also more in demand, so they typically command a higher resale price.

The standard cargo bed length is 8 feet for a full-sized pickup, 6 feet for an extended cab, and 5 feet for a crew cab. Cargo beds for compact pickups usually range from 5 to 6 feet. Fold-out bed extenders are widely available as well. These extenders flip over from within the bed, fencing off the open tailgate to allow you to secure bulkier or longer cargo. 

If you are towing a fifth wheel, short beds are not recommended. Since the hitch is inside the bed, a longer bed will keep the fifth wheel further away from the cab. People do tow fifth wheels with short beds, but you’ll typically find that the trailer is making contact with the rear cab’s window with this setup. It can also be a close call when backing up as the corner of the fifth wheel swings.

Additional Features

Automakers continue to add advanced safety technologies to their lineups, including electronic braking, stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitoring (TPM), lane departure warnings, and crash avoidance. 

Most trucks now come standard with apps on their infotainment system, but there are some dedicated towing features built in to the infotainment system on most trucks in the full-size and up category. The infotainment system will be the starting point for some of the features we highlight below and there is a range in options and technologies depending on the manufacturer. 

GM is a leader in 2020, with an infotainment system that allows RV owners to connect their truck to a few RV command systems and monitor and control RV features from inside the truck. GM’s infotainment system also provides a checklist of common steps needed to tow a trailer safely.

Some of these features come standard and others are optional, so you’ll want to do some research to decide what’s necessary for your rig. 

Trailer Brake Controller 

Most trucks that come with a towing option will also come with a trailer brake controller included. This system applies the brakes to the camper when the driver uses the brakes on the truck. This allows both the camper and the truck to each use their own brakes to slow down or stop safely.

Blind Spot Monitoring

This feature alerts the driver when another vehicle is in its blind spot. Most vehicles come with this feature standard, as part of a package of safety features. Now some trucks also have the capability to alert the driver when there is a vehicle in the blind spot of the camper.

Most vehicles come with a rear backup camera and each manufacturer’s offerings vary. Most will provide an image (varying in resolution quality) from the back view of the truck, lines that guide the driver on a projected path, and zoom-in view. The best systems offer multiple angles on the truck: a front bumper view, wheels view, rear truck bed view, rear hitch view, and a bird’s eye view. The top-of-the-line systems allow for an RV’s rear camera to integrate into the truck’s infotainment system and provide that view, as well.

Be aware that in the mid-size truck category, this feature isn’t standard and may not even be available as an option in some. The aftermarket takes care of this by offering solid units that can be installed in your truck. Some trucks—like the Silverado, RAM models, or F-150—even have wiring ready for installation if they don’t already come with this feature. 

Remote Trailer Light Check

Some models allow you to check your trailer lights by cycling through the lights with a smart key fob.

Trailer Backup Assist

Backup assist technologies increase your confidence in backing up your trailer. While the feature varies slightly by automaker, the concept remains the same.

Trailer Sway Control

This feature gives you confidence that you’re in complete control of your trailer. Some trucks offer a stability system and software to automatically respond to sway.

Trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring System

This feature monitors the pressure of your trailer tires. It also allows you to monitor the temperature of the tires to help prevent blowouts caused by overheating.

Final Considerations for Purchasing a Tow Vehicle 

Once you’ve narrowed down your options—from truck size to additional upgrades—look at consumer reports and Facebook groups for feedback on how the truck fares with current owners that tow. You’ll also want to take into account the time of year you’re looking to buy your truck and if you can take advantage of dealer incentives or holiday sales.   

Keep in mind that salespeople at dealerships might not be the best source of information for specific towing questions as they can be focused on what’s popular rather than practical. Even within certain brand models, there will be differences that can drastically change how much the truck can tow.

Choosing a Pickup Truck to Pull/Tow 9500lbs-11000lbs

Reader Question from Lo in OK: ” Here is my dilemma, my spouse and I are looking at travel trailers. We currently own a 2009 F150  2WD Super Cab 133” STX truck. It cannot haul easily for some of the travel trailers we are looking at.   What trucks do you feel would suit to easily pull anything over a GVWR of 9500 lbs up to 11,000 lbs?  “

Choosing a pickup truck for towing 9,000 lbs – 11,000 lbs

There are quite a few choices of 2019 model year half-ton trucks that will pull the weight Lo needs. It does depend on the pickup truck configuration though and ultimately a heavy-duty truck may be more suited.

Both light duty and heavy trucks are included below with the exception of 3500’s/F-350’s and above, as that may be a slight overkill for Lo’s requirements.

Here is some of the base leg work, however, more will need to be done at the dealership.

Towing capacity numbers highlighted in peach show the truck configurations with most towing capacity.

Note that these numbers are taken from the manufacturers towing charts for conventional towing (bumper pull). Exact towing capacity will depend on the trim level of the truck and requires the correct tow package and hitch.

Other cargo and people loaded in the truck will also affect the overall gross combined weight rating (GCWR). This, in turn, will affect the towing capacity. Check out this article to find out how to calculate your towing capacity .

Light Duty or Heavy Duty

When it comes to choosing a pickup for towing, it’s important to consider how often the truck will be towing. Also, take into account the conditions. Will it be all flat highway or over mountain passes. Will the truck be under strain often or rarely?

These are half-ton (1500) pickup trucks, which meet the criteria (or close). For some of the trucks, this is the absolute maximum capacity . This is fine for occasional towing.

For long trips or frequent towing at or more than 8,000 lbs, a heavy duty (2500) pickup truck is recommended.

Another factor to consider is the weight of the trucks themselves. Light-duty trucks inherently weigh less than a heavy-duty truck.

Consider the weight of the truck itself and the weight of what is being pulled. Even if the manufacturer states it can pull a certain weight.

4×4 or 4×2

4×2 pickup trucks usually have more towing capability than a 4×4. Consider whether extra grip from a 4×4 is needed for gravel roads, a slippery boat ramp or driving in adverse weather.

Light Duty Trucks For Towing

Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost V6 4X2 157″ WB (SuperCrew with 6.5″ box) with 3.73 axle ratio has up to 13,200 lbs of max trailering capacity for conventional towing. This will require the Max Trailer Tow Package and 20″ wheels and tires.

The same truck but in 4X4 is capable of 12,900 lbs.

As written in the towing chart below, the towing capacity will be reduced based on trim series. (Typically, higher trim levels have less towing capability).

There are several other truck configurations that would meet the 11,000 lb towing capacity, see the chart below.

The RAM 1500 truck with the most towing capability is a Quad Cab with 5.7L HEMI eTorque, 4X2 with 6’4″ box and 3.92 axle ratio comes in at 12,750 lbs max towing.

There are a few options from RAM Trucks in the 1500 segment when choosing a pickup for towing.

A RAM 1500 Crew Cab 4X4 with 5.7L HEMI V8, 6’4″ Box and 3.92 axle ratio has a max towing capacity of 11,320 lbs.

Chevrolet Silverado

From the Chevy Silverado line-up, a 1500 with the 6.2L V8, Double Cab, 4X4 with standard box (6.58′ box) and 3.42 axle ratio . Conventional towing capacity is up to 12,200 lbs.

Having the same truck but in a Crew Cab configuration reduces towing by 200 lbs. It still has a 12,000 lbs max towing capability.

GMC Sierra 1500

For GMC Sierra 1500’s, a Double Cab with standard box in 4×4 with max trailering package is rated at 11,800 lbs . This is also with the 6.2L V8 engine.

Toyota Tundra

The Tundra from Toyota don’t quite meet Lo’s requirement of up to 11,000 lbs.

A Toyota Tundra (with tow package) Limited with 5.7L V8 4X2 with 6’5″ box max towing is 10,100 lbs.

Nissan Titan

It’s a similar story with the Nissan Titan when it comes to towing capacity, with lower capability than what our reader Lo requires.

Gas or diesel.

Ford F-250 Super Duty

Most of the Ford F-250 Super Duty pick up trucks will be able to pull 9,000 lbs-11,000 lbs. Either the 6.2L V8 gas or the 6.7L V8 diesel. Diesel’s are able to pull more than the equivalent gas engine truck.

For occasional towing a gas truck is suffice. Most of the F-250’s with the 6.2L V8 gas and 4.30 axle ratio will pull between 13,000-15,000 lbs.

On the diesel side, the crew cabs with the highest GCWR, 4X2 have an 18,000 lb max tow rating. Equivalent 4X4’s are at 17,500 lbs.

Ford Reveal Towing Numbers on 2020 Super Duty

Ram trucks have a great website for choosing a pickup for towing. Using the sliders lets you see exactly how the wheelbase, engine, axle ratio and cab configurations affect the towing capacity.

A RAM 2500 4×2 Crew Cab,6.7L Cummins turbo diesel, 68RFE transmission, 3.73 axle ratio and 6’4″ box max trailer weight rating is 19,370 lbs.

All of the RAM 2500s are capable of meeting Lo’s requirements for towing except the Power Wagon (max towing is around 10,000 lbs because it’s more geared towards being an off-road truck).

RAM 2500 4X4 Mega Cab’s in gas or diesel also meet the criteria. According to RAM’s chart, the 6.4L HEMI gas engine with a 4.10 axle ratio is only 20 lbs less than what the diesel can pull which is 16,520 lbs.

4X4 Crew Cab in the RAM 2500 with Cummins diesel and 3.73 rear axle, 6’4″ box max trailering weight rating is 19,040 lbs.

A RAM 2500 4×4 Crew Cab with the 6.4L HEMI gas engine, 4.10 rear axle and 6’4″ box max trailer weight rating is 16,910 lbs.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

Chevy requires the truck to be a crew cab long box in either 4×2 or 4×4 to maximize the 14,500 lb max towing capacity with the 6.6L Duramax diesel engine.

For the gas engine truck to reach 14,500 lbs of conventional towing, it has to be a regular cab long box 4×4.

GMC SierraHD

Most of the GMC Sierra 2500’s are around the 13,000 lbs-14,500 lbs mark.

Which truck to choose?

When it comes to choosing a pickup for towing, it really comes down to your own situation when answering these questions;

How much weight do you need to pull?

How often will you be pulling that weight?

Can you justify the cost of a diesel for how often you’ll be towing?

How safe do you want to be when towing?

Do you need 4×4?

Almost all brands will have a truck configuration that meets our reader Lo’s requirements for towing.

A heavy-duty truck will provide more stability for her weight requirements. Then it comes down to choosing between which brand, features and of course price.

What is really the tow capacity for a 2021 Ford F150 with Powerboost with 11,400 pound towing capacity with the rated (by Ford) tow package? The combined gross vehicle weight for the truck, its payload and what it is towing is 14,000 pounds. Subtract the weight of the vehicle, some items in it and the passengers from the gross combined vehicle weight rating of 14,000 pounds and that leaves about 7,000 or 8,000 pounds remaining for towing, not the 11,400 it is otherwise rated for. Even with one light driver and no extra payload loaded in the truck there is only about 8,000 pound remaining before the gross vehicle combined weight rating of 14,000 pounds is exceeded. So what is legal and legitimate to tow, 11,400 or only 7,000 or 8,000 pounds according to the payload with passengers put in the truck?
