Chicago Concert Review: 54 Years Later and Still Going
On November 4, my family and I saw the band Chicago live at the Durham Performing Arts Center.
Going into the concert, I was extremely excited because Chicago is one of my favorite bands ever, and I was ecstatic to finally see them live.
Chicago formed in 1967 and has been recording and performing since then. What made them stand out from other bands was they were a rock band at their core, but they also had a 3 man horn section which allowed them to experiment and go different places with their sound.
The original lineup of the band was keyboard player and vocalist Robert Lamm, kassist and vocalist Peter Cetera, guitar player/vocalist Terry Kath (who Jimi Hendrix reportedly called “the greatest guitar player in the universe”), and drummer Danny Serphine. The horn section was made up of trombone player James Pankow, trumpeter Lee Loughnane, and woodwind player Walter Parazider.
This lineup carried on until January of 1978 when tragedy struck. Terry Kath had been playing with a revolver without realizing there was a bullet in the chamber. He then accidentally shot himself and died instantly. This was a massive setback for the band due to Kath’s playing and voice being an essential part of their sound. After this tragedy, I believe that their music took a sharp decline and they never fully recovered.
Later in 1985 after a multitude of pop hits, Peter Cetera then left the band due to creative differences and did not come back. This affected the band’s success because most people saw Cetera as the lead singer of the band since he sang most of the hits. Later in 1991, Danny Serphine was fired from the band leaving Lamm, Pankow, Loughnane, and Parazider as the only original members.
When I saw them, the lineup had 3 of the original members: Parazider had left in 2017 due to Alzheimer’s disease. The rest of the band was Ray Herrmann taking Parazider’s place, Brett Simon on bass, Lou Pardini on keyboards and occasional lead vocals, Neil Donell on occasional lead vocals and acoustic guitar, Guitarist Tony Obrohta, and Walfredo Reyes Jr and Ramon Yslas on drums and percussion.
They opened the show with the amazing song “Introduction”, which was the first song on the first album written by Terry Kath to introduce the sound of the band. This was a great introduction to this lineup and showed what the band could do at this point in their career.
Next up was the fan favorite song, “Questions 67 and 68” which introduced one of my favorite parts of the show, Neil Donell! It was truly amazing how much he imitated Peter Cetera’s voice but also made the songs his own, bringing his own personality into it–moving around the stage and whatnot.
Next was one of my favorite Chicago songs, “Dialogue” which was a duet pop song with Donell and Lamm singing both parts and it was just really cool to see it live.
Now my grips with this concert. They performed the amazing tune “Call on Me”. On the studio version, Peter Cetera usually sings lead vocals, but instead of getting Donell who sounded exactly like him to sing it, Lou Pardini sang the lead part. Pardini is not a bad singer, but to me, his voice did not fit this song at all. He could not hit some of the higher range notes that Donell and Cetera could.
After a couple of slower tracks, they performed one of my favorite songs of the night. “Ballet for a Girl in Bucannon” a twelve minute suite written by James Pankow. The band was extremely tight and you could tell some of them had been performing this song for 54 years. Half way through the song it came to one of the highlights of the whole band’s catalog for me “Color my World”. This song, sung by Kath in the past, was now sung by Lee Loughnane who did an amazing rendition of the classic song.
During this suite, however, some more problems showed up. In the original version of this song, the guitar is a huge part along with the bass guiding the song through its many twisting passages. But in this live version the guitar and bass were so quiet it took away from the enjoyment of the song. This happened throughout the entire show taking away from the magic of guitar focused rockers like “I’m a Man” and “25 or 6 to 4”. The keyboards were also overpowering these two instruments which worked for the 80s era songs like “Hard habit to break” and “You’re the inspiration” but took away from most of the earlier guitar focused songs.
Overall, these minor nitpicks didn’t take away from the experience, and I had a very enjoyable time. I would definitely recommend going to see these guys especially if you’re a fan of the band because I don’t know how much longer they are going to be touring.
But for now the band is “Feeling Stronger every Day”.
Hi! My name is Grant Silver and I’m a staff writer for The Mycenaean. I am a twin brother and I really enjoy and know about lots of music especially hard rock/metal.
I saw Chicago last night outside Seattle. I’m concerned that they’ve become a cover band of themselves due to all the changes but they sounded right and I had a blast. It was sad that many people on the audience did. It know they released a new album (which I think is absolutely fantastic as a new group) but everyone seemed to enjoy “If This Is Goodbye.” I think the 80s hits where they had to cover Bill Champlin’s parts were a miss…they can replace Cetera and Scheff’s range (almost…there were a few High notes in “Hard to Say I’m Sorry” which were missed) but they absolutely cannot replace Champlin. I think they know it as they didn’t sing any of his other songs, including #1 “Look Away.” Other than that they did a great job and I love the new album. Hoping for more!!!
Great review! I might actually buy a ticket to go see them now. I was wondering if they were going to still sound decent without Cetera.

Performing Hit After Hit, Chicago Is Still Chicago: Concert Review
And yet Chicago , the rock and brass band known for its revolving door of sidemen, still makes the cut because Robert Lamm, the original lead singer and primary songwriter on their early albums, is still there, as are trombonist James Pankow and trumpeter Lee Loughnane, the heart of Chicago’s signature horn section. (Guitarist Terry Kath, who in the band’s original lineup shared lead vocal duties with Lamm and bassist Peter Cetera in a baritone virtually indistinguishable from Lamm’s, accidentally shot himself in the head in January 1978. Chicago considered breaking up, but instead plowed on with a succession of guitarists.)

With Lamm, Pankow and Loughnane still on board, Chicago is still Chicago. The early stuff is where it’s at. I lost interest in the band after the third or fourth album, when Cetera, a tenor, took over most of the lead vocals and the band took a turn toward pop schmaltz with such hits as “Baby What a Big Surprise,” “If You Leave Me Now” and the dreadful “Old Days.” (Cetera left the band in 1985 and was replaced by Jason Scheff, who remained with the band for 31 years.)
Chicago’s sold-out Aug. 23, 2023, concert at Humphrey’s in San Diego, an outdoor venue overlooking a gorgeous marina on San Diego Bay, consisted, in true legacy-band style, of a veritable hit parade of songs most in the audience grew up with.

And hearing Lamm, a keyboard strapped around his neck, belting out such early Chicago favorites as “Make Me Smile,” “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is” and “25 or 6 to 4,” their first Top 5 hit, while Pankow and Loughnane blew their hearts out on their respective horns, took me back to my own high school days. Chicago may not have been among the bands the cool kids listened to (those honors belonged to Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin and Uriah Heep), but they sure had a lot of songs the rest of us loved and sang along with—in the privacy of our own rooms, of course—every time they came on the FM radio we all listened to after school.
The three originals with drummer Walfredo Reyes Jr. (Photo by Thomas K. Arnold; used with permission)
The flow of music was carefully curated by Lamm and his two fellow original members, who are said to run the band with an iron hand and make all decisions together. In a July 2022 interview with Rock Cellar, Lamm said, “There are only three members who are calling the shots. The rest of the band are great guys, contracted players, top-notch guys.”
One of those “top-notch guys” is Neil Donell, who since 2018 has been singing tenor as a replacement for Cetera, Scheff and, briefly, Jeff Coffey.
Chicago’s Humphrey’s concert, the final show in a two-night stand, lasted nearly two hours, including a 20-minute intermission. The repertoire consisted almost exclusively of hits, in true legacy band fashion. Other early tunes include “Feeling Stronger Every Day,” “Saturday in the Park” and “Questions 67 and 68,” along with Cetera-era ballads such as “Just You ‘n’ Me,” “If You Leave Me Now” and “Hard to Say I’m Sorry.”
Watch them perform a favorite earlier this year
It was a smooth, polished show, but you know what? It worked. Many classic rock bands intersperse their hits with new material that often gets polite, almost patient applause. They keep trying to replicate the grandeur of their early days, but more often than not they fail. Chicago didn’t even try.
But that’s all right.

Two quibbles with this review of one of the greatest bands of all time. Terry Kath’s voice sounded nothing like that of Robert Lamm. Due to his soulful vocals, Kath sang hits like Colour My World and Now That You’ve Gone. Also, James Pankow wrote Old Days and Peter Cetera sang the lead. Thanks for the review!
“Sing a Mean Tune” is exactly correct. Kath (a baritone) and Lamm (a tenor) sounded nothing alike. I’ll bet the author was thinking of Lamm and Peter Cetera. Those two had pretty similar voices.
Thanks for the comment, but I respectfully disgree. “Realizing the need for both a tenor to complement baritones Lamm and Kath … local tenor and bassist Peter Cetera was invited to join the Big Thing in late 1967.” This, from liner notes to the Chicago boxed set, cited in Wikipedia., Also, I never said Cetera wrote “Old Days”; I merely said he sang lead, which he did.
LOVE CHICAGO! Only the Beginning came out and I was hooked. It became THE song of my first serious relationship and every time I hear it, I get choked up. Have seen them play so many times – GREAT GROUP❣️
A band that records new material and plays none of it live is basically a nostalgia act tribute band. Old Days was a big hit. This band has zero in common with the original lineup or the lineup that existed from 1985 to about 2010. As they lost Cetera and then fired people like Danny Seraphine and Bill Champlin and Jason Scheff they became just replacements of replacements of replacements other than the three originals. Learn the history of a band before commenting.
Now a pale shadow of the original band, settling for MOR.
We just saw Chicago Performing in Tulsa six nights ago. I was shocked that Pankow was no longer with the group! The trombonist that replaced him was fabulous, but Pankow was my favorite original founding member. Does anyone know when he left the group and what happened? Did he just get tired of the traveling, or health reasons or what? The video that was playing in the background, during their entire 2 hr. show behind the band on the stage, was silly & distracting – bunch of actors/models playing & hanging out in the large park in Chicago and guys and gals holding hands and walking around, it was like a commercial. Weird. It was like they were promoting the city of Chicago, old and new, instead of Chicago, the band and their long & successful history. Original vintage videos of the band in the old days, like in their documentaries, like America currently does when they tour, would’ve been so much better. However, the music was fabulous. But I was a little surprised & upset that they never even mentioned any of the former members, especially like Pankow who must have just left the group! Everything online says he is still with the group – just like your article here reads. Thank you to anyone who can help me with this.
They should hang it up. Too many bands running around with revolving door personnel holding on for whatever money and notoriety is left.
Pankow has not left! Old days is not dreadful! Peter and Lamm sound nothing alike nor does Lamm and Kath! I’m tired of Chicago being underated and the so called cooler bands being overrated! I like Zepp but they had alot of shit music on those albums!
That’s Eric Baines in the foreground, not Neil Donnell. Eric plays bass and vocals, been with Chicago for a couple years. Used to play bass and vocals for Dwight Yokum for a few years. Excellent singer and musician. He’s my nephew so I am biased.

Review: Well-danced ‘Chicago’ national tour worth a fresh look
After a long absence from the San Diego Civic Theatre stage, the 1975 Kander and Ebb musical makes a welcome return

Some musicals don’t improve with age. But “Chicago,” the Kander and Ebb musical that turns 48 in June, seems to only get better.
A terrific touring production now playing through Sunday at the San Diego Civic Theatre has spectacular dancing and two strong performers in the lead roles. And the musical’s script — with its deep cynicism of American society and our fascination with celebrity culture and true crime — feels more relevant than ever.
When “Chicago” debuted in 1975, the show’s book — co-written by Fred Ebb and director-choreographer Bob Fosse — was not well-received by Broadway critics. They found the self-absorbed, fame-craving, unsympathetic characters very hard to love. But over the years, stage and television shows with deeply flawed central characters have become much more popular with American audiences.
For those not familiar with the story, it’s a dark look at Prohibition-era Chicago, where the sensationalistic press turns killers into superstars of the moment. Roxie Hart is a vain chorus girl who murders her lover, then competes for media attention with the other “merry murderesses” in a women’s prison, including vaudeville dancer and double-murderer Velma Kelly.
It’s been many years since a “Chicago” tour has visited San Diego, but the popular musical has continued to pop up in local productions every few years. This sharp-looking touring production retains all of Fosse’s original choreography and his original staging concept, with a jazz orchestra onstage in a band riser and each song introduced as if it were a ‘20s-era vaudeville act.
Kailin Brown, who plays Velma, starts the show off with a bang, leading the company in a meticulously performed “All that Jazz.” Brown is a stunning dancer — tall, lithe and muscular — with a decent singing voice. Brown contrasts well physically and stylistically with Katie Frieden as Roxie Hart. Frieden isn’t quite as strong a dancer, but she’s a more natural and spontaneous actor with more nuanced vocals. Side by side, the redhead Freiden and the black-wigged Brown are like fire and ice.
The show’s supporting cast is good, if not as memorable as Brown and Frieden. They include Robert Quiles as Roxie’s sad-sack husband Amos; Connor Sullivan as Roxie’s greedy lawyer Billy Flynn; and Illeana “illy” Kirven as prison matron “Mama” Morton.
The ensemble and dance scenes are the highlight of the show and the 19-member company is jam-packed with strong dancers who faithfully re-create the show’s most memorable numbers, including “We Both Reached for the Gun,” “Cell Block Tango” and “Me and My Baby.”
It’s nice to see “Chicago” back at the Civic in such fine form.

The show was great. As I had seen them twice within the past 2 years this show I was the best performance. The other was at the Allegheny Casino in Salamanca,Ny and the Molson Theatre in Toronto. Whenever they are near to my hometown I go to their concert.
They made sure that they gave it their all. Non stop songs from
approximately 8:45 till 11:15pm.
The Doobie Brothers started off the double bill show. They are always good as well.
If they are near your town go and see them. You won't be disappointed.

Whoa! What a show! Chicago play nonstop hits and the instrumental sections are as crisp as ever. I'm mostly a fan of their first four albums and they didn't skimp on that material, but still played quite a bit of their AM Gold from later on haha. New man Jeff Coffey does a great job but the stars are still the rest of the band who have the live energy and passion of a band that just got started, not one that is celebrating 50 years. James Pankow is a beast.
Chicago did NOT disappoint!! How often do we attend a concert with high hopes of a great performance only to walk away let down? Not this time! Chicago gave a stellar performance, belting out hit after hit. It left fans satisfied without regret. The brass sounded as crisp and clean as ever. Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow, and Walter Parazaider can still rock with the same ferver from 30 years ago!! New lead singer Jeff Coffey did better than adequate keeping the continuity of the hits we grew up singing...and still do. I'm not sure how much longer they will be touring, but I imagine this was an opportunity I may not have again. This group was long overdue in their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2016). May they continue do what they love, performing for those of us who love and appreciate this incredibly talented group of musicians!

Johnny Marr and James Announce Joint North American Tour
By Jazz Monroe
Johnny Marr and James have announced a joint tour of North America, starting at the end of summer. The coast-to-coast run takes in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, and more than a dozen other cities. Check out the dates below.
Marr and his fellow Mancunians first toured together in 1985, when James supported the Smiths on the Meat Is Murder tour. In a press release, Marr recalled of that tour, “We admired them and even did one of their songs in our set. I’ve been a fan of theirs ever since and being out on tour again after 40 years is a really great thing.”
James’ Tim Booth said of the 1985 shows, “We were met with such generosity and kindness that it changed our DNA. Co-headlining an American tour with the true Gent and genius that is Johnny Marr, is an honor and pleasure. We look forward to making magic together.”

LIV Golf announces Chicago venue for individual finale
LIV Golf announced a new venue for its individual event outside of Chicago later this year.
On Tuesday Bolingbrook Golf Club was named host of LIV’s 13th event of the 2024 season. When the Saudi-backed circuit released its schedule last fall, Chicago was earmarked to receive an event, but was without a home course. Bolingbrook previously hosted a 2021 Forme Tour, the PGA Tour affiliated minor-league formed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to provide competition for non-Canadian PGA Tour Canada members.
Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove had hosted a LIV event the past two years in the Chicagoland area.
“The passionate sports fans of Chicago have embraced the intense competition and fan-first experience that LIV Golf delivers, and this year it will be an incredible setting for a high-stakes event as players battle it out for the individual title and a roster spot for 2025,” LIV commissioner and CEO Greg Norman said in a release. “We’re thrilled to return to Illinois with an event at Bolingbrook Golf Club as we celebrate the season-long race and set the stage for the 2024 finale.”
The Bolingbrook competition will see players compete for final positions in the individual standings and the title of 2024 LIV Golf individual champion. It will also determine team seedings for the 2024 Team Championship. The location of the LIV finale has yet to be announced.
Joaquin Niemann is currently atop the individual standings six events into the season, with Jon Rahm in second and Dean Burmester third. Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers are in the lead of the team component of LIV.

The band was extremely tight and you could tell some of them had been performing this song for 54 years. Half way through the song it came to one of the highlights of the whole band's catalog for me "Color my World". This song, sung by Kath in the past, was now sung by Lee Loughnane who did an amazing rendition of the classic song.
