Idyllic bays and dramatic, fjord-like rocky slopes, deep blue, crystal-clear water and snow-covered mountain peaks in the background - all this can be seen on a boat trip on Lake Lucerne.
An excursion to Central Switzerland is just not complete without a boat cruise on Lake Lucerne. Whether a Lunch Cruise on the modern MS Diamant or a romantic cruise at sunset on an antique paddle steamer – it’s a must.
With a wide range of services, the Lake Lucerne Navigation Company (SGV) offers the perfect cruise for every taste. Even the Alpine world of Central Switzerland can be explored by waterway. By boat from Lucerne to Vitznau, then on to a cog railway and up to Rigi, and little later savouring the view of Lake Lucerne from above.
Another unique experience is the panoramic journey in the Gotthard Panorama Express. It is the one and only Premium Panoramic Train in Switzerland to combine a train ride with a boat cruise. Discover Lucerne
We adore the Wine and Dine Cruise on Lake Lucerne
We cannot hold back sharing our latest discovery: a sunset cruise on a historic steam paddler featuring local dishes and wine. Have I mentioned that the event is all-inclusive?
During a recent city getaway to Lucerne, we retreated to our hotel in order to dress for a night out. Because: how often do you get to board a vessel that once transported royalty? (Queen Elizabeth II, together with Prince Philip, had traveled from Lucerne to Rütli during her visit in May 1980.)
The Stadt Luzern steam paddler wears history on her sleeves
Down by the lake at pier 6, which is behind the KKL Culture and Congress Centre , the Stadt Luzern steam paddler is already awaiting her passengers. The boat was officially commissioned in 1928 but has recently been overhauled to the latest standards. With such a ripe age, it deserves to be called the flagship of Lake Lucerne.
Our invitation to the Wine and Dine Cruise has us check in at 6:30 PM for onboard appetizers. After a leisurely start, the boat would depart the harbor at 7:30 and return by 10:30 PM.
During this culinary cruise, the boat will be entirely reserved for diners. This means that the lower deck and even the first-class cabins remain empty. Later on, we would walk all over the boat in between courses for picture taking...
But first, we are whisked upstairs to the quaint Queen’s Salon where other guests are already cheering to bubbly. The captain and his crew properly introduce themselves, each giving a preview of the highlights we are about to experience.
Four courses with wine pairings
With the serving of the appetizers, we can already tell that this is going to be a foodie’s heaven. Executive Chef Florian Gilges has used local ingredients to prepare bite-size appetizers: think Sbrinz mousse or apricot mustard.
Each of the four courses starts with the introduction of one or two wines. The sommelière would take the mic and walk us through the profile of each wine. By helping us refresh our wine vocabulary, we can now better describe what the nose smells and the palate tastes.
The Sitenrain Solaris white wine on her recommendation is fruity, with hints of banana. This organic wine is from a local vineyard that maintains the exceptionally rare solaris grape variety.
The wine makes for a perfect pairing and is so delicious that we end up sticking with it for the remainder of the night. Of course, we cannot resist tasting the various red wines, either. But we always go back to this white…
The dishes on tonight’s menu are entirely local and regional. There is lamb from Göscheneralp or locally roasted coffee from Rast Kaffee. The local connection is a unique feature of this gourmet trip. As we criss-cross Lake Lucerne, the crew would frequently point to a vineyard or a farm on the shore. This establishes a sensory link between the foods and their origin.
Ship ahoy! It’s a night to remember
Apart from the culinary treats, cruising on a lake when most other boats are already docked is really special. After the sunset comes the blue hour, then dusk and nightfall. With this being a three-hour boat ride, we get to slow down and go with the flow.
Sometimes, we would grab the camera and jump out of our seats to capture a special scene. During other times, we would simply watch the scenery pass by.
Before we arrive back at the pier, a heavenly slice of chocolate cake is served. Then, the captain announces a surprise: he would be pulling up close to the Quai Bridge of Lucerne, giving us a new perspective on the city. We join the other diners out on the deck to see the spectacle. And we remain outside until the boat finally docks.
The Wine and Dine Cruise on Lake Lucerne is a hidden gem
The evening would leave lasting memories - we still talk about it weeks later. There is something special about spending an experience with only a few others.
While we did not have a chance to chat with any of the diners, it still felt like we are all part of a special club. We were the only ones out on the lake tonight. And we were all treated like kings and queens by the captain and his staff.

Lake Lucerne Cruise (Routes, Prices & More)
Lake Lucerne is one of the country’s largest lakes and a popular tourist destination in central Switzerland. Luzern has many things to do and is easily accessible by various mountain railways, including the panoramic trains that are so popular among first-time visitors to Switzerland.
A cruise on Lake Lucerne is even included in the Gotthard Panorama Express experience, and it’s one of the highlights of the entire trip. But you can explore the lake without riding any trains first, and this detailed guide to cruises on Lake Lucerne will tell you all you need to know to plan that adventure!

Lake Lucerne Tour Suggestions
If you just want to jump on a cruise and enjoy a short trip or a full day out on the lake, then the following three options might be just the ticket.
The first one is a Lake Lucerne Panoramic Sightseeing cruise which you can take at whichever time you like (as long as there is a boat). It is a one-hour affair that shows you all the highlights and an audio explanation in your choice of language.
The second option is an excellent combination of a small group Lucerne Tour , which covers all the highlights and ends with a one-hour lake cruise.
The third option is one of my favorite trips in Switzerland. A boat trip on Lake Lucerne to the lovely lakeside town of Vitznau followed by a ride up Mt Rigi on the stunning cogwheel railway.
Or, you can book a full day on the lake with all your friends on your own private boat , including stops at all the best spots, lunch at a fantastic restaurant and time to jump in the lake and swim. You can drive the boat yourself if you are up for it!
Another flexible and cheap option is this all-day ticket to jump on and off the local boats on Lake Lucerne, which include some fantastic historic steamboats. My favorite way to get to somewhere like Mt Rigi via Vitznau.
If you would prefer to organise your trip on the Lake Lucerne ferries, keep reading below.
Cruising on Lake Lucerne: Overview
The important thing you need to know before you book a boat ride on Lake Lucerne is that there are two main types of lake cruises – culinary and panoramic. Panoramic boat tours take you across the lake, allowing you to discover jaw-dropping views.
On the other hand, culinary cruises are usually themed – think fondue cruises, fajita cruises, etc. You’re seated at a dining table and enjoy a delicious meal while views of the lake and surrounding mountains flash in the background.
Panoramic boat rides are affordable and usually free or discounted with the various travel passes. Culinary boat rides are more expensive because they include a meal and drinks, and you can’t get a huge discount.
Choose a sunset cruise if money isn’t an object. Lake views are more magical when contrasted against the colors of a sunset, and dinner is much more delicious when paired with such stunning views.
Also, it is possible to choose from almost 20 different boats. The fleet includes five paddle steamers and 14 motor vessels, so feel free to board the boat you like the most.

Things to do in lucerne: your ultimate guide, how to get to the pier in lucerne.
Although there are piers in many towns along the lake shore, your best bet for a cruise is to head to Lucerne. There are seven piers in the city alone, and it’s where you’ll have the most options for Lake Lucerne boat trips. Piers 1, 2, and 3 operate boat trips to all the bigger towns on the lake shore.
There’s another reason why Lucerne is the best starting point for lake cruises, and that is easy public transport access. It’s the biggest city on the shore of the lake, and it has the best train connections to other cities in Switzerland. So, if you rely on public transport, you’ll be glad to know that you can easily travel to Lucerne by train from most other towns and cities in Switzerland.
The main train station in Lucerne is directly adjacent to piers 1, 2, and 3. It’s impossible to miss – look for the large steamboats and head in their direction.

Boats operate on Lake Lucerne year-round, so you can go on a lake cruise whenever you want. The main difference between summer and winter timetables is that the boats are more frequent in the summer. Also, some cruise routes are seasonal, so you won’t be able to do all the routes if you visit in the off-season.
Here’s a timetable for Lake Lucerne cruises this winter season:
You can check it out more at this link , and see what all the different annotations mean.
Here’s another link for the Spring 2023 timetable , which includes additional routes. I’ll add the summer 2023 timetable to this guide once they post it online!
Generally speaking, cruising on the lake in the summer is best. It’s a much more enjoyable experience when it’s warm and sunny, plus you have many more options for cruise routes. Winter cruises can be just as magical, especially when the boats are adorned with lovely Christmas decorations, but it can be freezing on the open decks.
Ticket Prices
Ticket prices depend on factors and range from 10 CHF to more than 100 CHF. You can get a day pass for the lake that lets you ride multiple boats or purchase point-to-point tickets to hop from one town to the next.
The prices also depend on the season, but the average number I can give you is between 40 CHF and 70 CHF for return tickets. Remember that you can also get all sorts of discounts, so don’t forget to check out your options.
The cheapest option is a one-hour catamaran cruise with no breaks or meals. Tickets start at some 25 CHF for second-class seats, without a discount.
You can use this link to estimate how much your journey on Lake Lucerne would cost.
Opening Hours
The operating hours for cruises on Lake Lucerne depend on the season; you can check the current schedule here .
Cruises occur daily, even in the winter season, but the operating hours are shorter during the colder months. Also, remember that these opening hours are for the various ticket offices along the shore of Lake Lucerne – the boat cruise timetable is entirely different. It depends on the season and weather conditions.
There are usually two daily departures in the winter season for the Lucerne-Fluelen cruise, but more departures for the shorter routes on the lake. Click here for the current timetable of all cruises and ferries on Lake Lucerne.
10 Best Mountains To Visit Near Lucerne: All The Info
Lake lucerne route suggestions.
One of the best cruise routes on Lake Lucerne is from Flüelen to Lucerne. This is the trip included in the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland, so if you’re doing that and you’re going to ride the Gotthard Panorama Express Train, this is the route you should take. This cruise covers almost the entire lake, and it is truly a wonderful experience.
Luzern – Hergiswil – Alpnachstad is another popular route, especially with hikers who want to ascend Mount Pilatus, the closest mountain to Lucerne . Trips to Küssnacht and Ennetbürgen are also pretty popular, especially among travelers who want to explore as many lake destinations as possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the swiss travel pass valid on the lake lucerne cruise.
Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass is valid for cruises on Lake Lucerne and gets you a free ride on any of the passenger ships. You can’t get a free culinary cruise, but depending on the exact boat, you might be eligible for a discount, so ask around.
If you have the local Tell Pass, that also includes free travel on ferries on Lake Lucerne. Additionally, I have to point out that a Lake Lucerne cruise is included in the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland itinerary. When traveling from Lugano to Lucerne on the Gotthard Panorama Express train, passengers should get out at Flüelen for a panoramic boat trip across the entire lake.
Where can tickets be bought for the Lake Lucerne cruise?
Individual tickets for Lake Lucerne boat trips can be purchased once you’ve boarded a boat. There’s no surcharge for purchasing the ticket once you’re on the boat.
In addition to that, you can also buy tickets at the year-round offices in Weggis and Lucerne. Ticket offices in other towns are open only seasonally. Getting tickets from most railway operators is also possible, and you can even buy them online.
Can I reserve some seats for the Lake Lucerne cruise?
You can reserve seats only in the dining and lounge areas of the boats. You can’t reserve seats for the upper deck; they’re assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
Also, groups of ten or more people must make a group reservation, but remember that this doesn’t include a fixed seat reservation.

Hello, Is it possible to do a hop on hop off cruise in Lake Lucerne and thus pass between several villages or sites around the lake? Is there any link that explains how it’s done? Thank you
If you get a day pass for the region then you can do what you want. I believe it may also be possible to do it on a return ticket to your final destination, but you should check at the SBB train station or boat counter. Local boats on the lakes are the same as public transport in Switzerland, so the same rules apply as for normal travel passes.
I would like to take Lucerne boat cruise to Stans so I can take cable car to Mt. Stanserhorn. I will purchase Swiss Travel Pass. Where can I catch cruise to Stans? Is there an address for the pier as may be coming from Grand Europe Hotel in Lucerne.
Hi Duane Lee, All the boats in Lucerne leave right opposite the train station on the lake. You should take the bus into town to the train station. It is right on the water there near where the bus will come in. Just type in : Lucerne Bahnhofquai on google maps and you will see. I am not 100% sure which quai the stans boat leaves from, but just ask around once you get there.
we will have STP and want to take a boat ride (for free to either Burgenstock or Fruelen. We are a retired couple age 62 and love being on the water and seeing the beautiful sites. I read in your article that it takes 6 hours round trip to get to Fruelen. Would we just turn around and ride back? Do you think this is a good idea or not. Also How do I book lunch on the boat for the trip to Fruelen? Thanks! I love your articles on Switzerland! You are helping us so much with our first visit there in August.
It’s a full day out for sure. As for lunch, not sure about food on such long trips. They do have limited food available from memory. But if you want a decent food experience you might need a specific cruise.

Dinner cruise at 19:10 pier 2 Luzern/Lucerne
On recommendation from one of the servers at a hotel restaurant, we bought 2 tickets to the dinner cruise that LEAVES at 19:10. Be sure to get there early as you may want to change your table. Make sure you get a table near a window that opens. it was hot that day and we were behind the espresso machine inside and the window/door next to our table did not open so we could not take pictures through the 2 panes of glass (since the door was open, it opened in front of our stationery window. Also, the espresso machine was going constantly after dinner..but still not too bad. My complaint was only that I had to get up and go outside to take pictures during dinner due to the glass having a glare on it. The food was pretty good and the service was excellent. Stunning views and the sunset was incredible. The dinner cruise takes about 2 hours and was well worth the money! Be sure to get a reservation early then come back 20 minutes before the boat is scheduled to leave. You buy tickets in a ticket office between docs 1 and 2 across from the train station and museum.
We took a one hour boat trip of the lake from the town. We paid 17 Swiss francs which is okay. The tour was good and saw some beautiful sights, the incredible sunshine made it even better!
Luzern was a lovely place. We went there straight from the Zurich airport on a direct train. The train station is very central to hotels, boat docks, and other attractions including Old Town. We arrived on a sunny day, but knew that the next day was going to be rainy. So we took advantage of the nice day, and visited Mt. Pilatus the day we arrived in Luzern from overseas. We checked into our hotel, Renaissance, ate a quick breakfast, and headed to the Schiff station ( dock) for a boat to Alpnachstad. Had a lovely boat ride ( of an hour or so) with amazing and beautiful views of the lake and lakeside villages and the mountains. Then very easily got on to the cogwheel train to Mt. Pilatus, a fun ride. Enjoyed the views from Mt. Pilatus, and then rode back on the cable car and the gondolas to Krienz, and took the bus back to Luzern. Really doable on the first day we arrived. In the evening we went by the river and the lake and enjoyed the city of Luzern. On the rainy day, saw the Rosengart collection of Picassos and other paintings, and strolled around town visiting other museums. Also saw Mt. Rigi on one of the days, but though it did not rain and was quite sunny in Luzern, it was cloudy that day at the top. Yet a fun experience.
We arrived in Lucerne on an unfortunate rainy and cold day. Nevertheless, we could see that the lake was beautiful like other lakes in Switzerland.
We took an hour boat ride with our group heading to Mount Pilatus in the morning. Great commentary and views. Very relaxing and smooth trip. The only way to see it, forget the bus or car and don't forget your camera.
The 1 hour trip is enough time for you to see what you need to see. The boat departs from the station side and on the oposite side of the lake. It is very relaxing and no photo will do the scenery justice

This cruise is a match for anyone seeking elegance: The tables are covered in crisp white cloths, wine and cocktails are served in sparkling glasses, and a three-course a la carte dinner is served at a relaxed pace (no buffet here).
The Bateaux cruise is an experience to get dressed up for, where the dress code is semi-formal and dinner is accompanied by live music. The sunset can provide the perfect backdrop for pictures, and don't forget to snap a shot of the Statue of Liberty . Children younger than 6 are not permitted on this cruise, so expect a polished, for-adults atmosphere complete with creative cocktails and dancing under the stars. The Bateaux has rightfully earned a reputation for its fresh food; this three-course, plated menu includes several tempting a la carte options from a ravioli starter with crispy pancetta to osso bucco with cauliflower polenta.

City Cruises New York Signature Dinner Cruise
Price: From $109 Duration: 2.5 hours Standout perk: A live DJ gives this dinner cruise an extra dose of atmosphere.
Looking for a casual night of dining and dancing with the addition of a skyline backdrop? This dinner cruise offers just that. Set sail from Chelsea Piers in a climate-controlled boat along the Hudson and East rivers, admiring New York City landmarks like the Empire State Building . For dinner, indulge in a chef-prepared buffet with a wide range of options from Greek salad to oven-roasted salmon with miso to Caribbean jerk braised pork. If you're bringing a sweet tooth on board, be sure to check out the ample dessert station.
After snapping some pictures on the open-air deck, return to the cabin for cocktails from the cash bar, interactive games and upbeat music from the onboard DJ.
Those traveling with young kids will be pleased to know that infants younger than 3 cruise free – so feel free to bring your little ones along to enjoy the experience with you.
La Barca Cantina
Price: Varies Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: You'll find an extensive tequila and mezcal list on board to accompany the Mexican fare.
One criticism of New York dinner cruises is that they don't offer good value for money, but the "taco boat" challenges that critique with ceviche, tacos, churros, cocktails and skyline views for an affordable price. Climb aboard a yacht at Pier 81 to experience a youthful, modern interpretation of a dinner cruise – think: low lighting, couches for lounging and three bars, complete with Latin pop, salsa and dance music playing in the background. Raise a glass while the yacht sails south on the Hudson River to check out world-famous Manhattan skyline views.
La Barca Cantina also offers a bottomless brunch cruise with a DJ, as well as special events.

Those traveling in a group should keep in mind: Tickets are slightly discounted for groups of 4 to 16.
Circle Line New York City Harbor Lights Cruise
Courtesy of Circle Line
Price: From $54 Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: This no-fuss, excellent-value cruise option has drinks and snacks available for purchase on board.
When you're craving panoramic views rather than a three-course meal, choose the Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise departing from Pier 83. This sightseeing sailing delivers an up-close experience of the Manhattan skyline lights coming to life, while cruising past landmarks including the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chrysler Building . A live guide provides narration and historical context for what you're seeing. As the sun sets behind New Jersey, watch the glow of the sinking sun reflect in the windows of skyscrapers.
Food from the onboard cafe – like salads, sandwiches and snacks – as well as beer, wine and cocktails at the bar are available for purchase. This is an ideal situation for groups with varying levels of hunger and thirst. Sit alfresco in the breeze or indoors in the climate-controlled cabin – it's up to you.
Non-English-speaking guests can download the Circle Line app for narration available in several languages; just be sure to bring your own headset.
