Jon RAHM 41208

Born in the small coastal town of Barrika in Spain, he played college golf at Arizona State and became World Amateur Number One in 2015. Finished low amateur at the 2016 U.S. Open before turning professional.

Enjoyed a stellar first season on the European Tour in 2017 - in which he was named Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year - becoming the first player to win multiple Rolex Series events with victories at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai. Also won his first PGA TOUR title at the Farmers Insurance Open that same year.

He added a second Dubai Duty Free Irish Open title to his trophy cabinet at Lahinch Golf Club in 2019 to become the first three-time Rolex Series winner. Made his Ryder Cup debut in 2018 and beat Tiger Woods in the Sunday Singles as Thomas Bjørn's side stormed to an historic victory at Le Golf National.

Earlier that year, he won on home soil for the first time as a professional, emerging victorious at the Open de España. Defended his Open de España title in 2019, winning his fifth European Tour title in just his 39th appearance - ten fewer than Seve Ballesteros.

Won the 2019 Race to Dubai after his victory at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

He sent records tumbling at the 2020 WGC-Mexico Championship, carding a ten under par round of 61, which included a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th at Chapultepec Golf Club, to record the lowest round of his career and the joint lowest round in the history of the World Golf Championships.

Those wins came in a year when he sprung to global prominence and rose to become a staple in the world's top ten, winning on the PGA TOUR at the Memorial Tournament and BMW Championship.

Won his first Major Championship in 2021, becoming the first player from Spain to win the U.S. Open. Rahm started the final day three strokes back, and birdies on the 17th and 18th holes at Torrey Pines gave him a one-stroke victory over Louis Oosthuizen. The Spaniard finished no lower than T8 in the four Majors in 2021, winning the U.S. Open, T3 at The Open, T5 at the Masters and T8 at the US PGA Championship.

Was Europe's top performer at the 2021 Ryder Cup, earning 3.5 points as he formed a formidable partnership with Sergio Garcia, whom he cites as a hero and influence.

In 2022, Rahm emulated Ballesteros's feat of winning three Open de España titles in the modern era as he won his third national Open in just four appearances. He also become the first player to win the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai on three occasions as he finished two strokes clear of a world-class field at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Won his second Major Championship at the 2023 Masters Tournament, becoming the first player from Europe to have won both the U.S. Open and the Masters. After a rain-affected third round resumed on Sunday morning, Rahm overturned a four-stroke deficit with 30 holes left to play, eventually finishing two strokes clear of Brooks Koepka at Augusta National. It was his fourth win of the 2023 PGA TOUR season.

Earned three points from four matches as he made his third Ryder Cup appearance at Marco Simone, helping Europe regain the trophy. Hit Europe’s opening tee shot on Friday afternoon and went head-to-head with World Number One Scottie Scheffler in the Sunday Singles, earning half a point after a birdie on the last. His stand-out performance came in the Friday four-ball session where he finished eagle-par-eagle to win an unlikely half point.

Jon Rahm WDs from European Tour finale, ends bid to win Race to Dubai title

Jon Rahm is skipping the European Tour 2021 finale, and with it giving up on the chance to win the tour’s season-long points title for the second time in three years.

The World No. 1 announced that he won’t be playing in the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, deciding to forego the travel to remain with his family.

MORE: Jon Rahm's reaction to not winning PGA Tour player of the year is what you'd have expected

“After lengthy discussions with my team, I have come to the difficult decision not to travel to Dubai next week,” Rahm said in a statement. “The demands of a long season with many ups and downs has taken a lot out of me. I feel I need to take time to recharge my batteries while spending quality time with my family.

"I would like to take this opportunity to wish DP World and the European Tour all the best for the season-ending event, which is always such a special tournament. I would also like to reiterate my congratulations to both for the announcement of the DP World Tour earlier this week, and I look forward very much to competing on the DP World Tour next year."

Rahm currently is third in the European Tour’s Race to Dubai standings behind Collin Morikawa and Billy Horschel. He previously won the season long title in 2019. He’s also won the year-end tournament at Jumeriah Golf Estates in 2019 and previously in 2017. The 27-year-old Spaniard's decision not to play increases the chances that an American will win the Race to Dubai title for the first time in history.

MORE: 18 things you need to know about Jon Rahm

Rahm competed in 21 events on the PGA and European Tour in 2021 along with the Ryder Cup, recording 12 top-10 finishes. He last competed in October at the Spanish Open and Andalucia Masters in his home country of Spain. He finished T-17 in the former event before missing the cut the next week. Afterward, Rahm noted how tied he was after a long season that included the high of winning his first major title at the U.S. Open and the low of twice testing positive for COVID-19 and having to withdraw from the Memorial and the Tokyo Olympics.

"This is the first time in my life that I don't want to see a golf club,” Rahm said last month. "And this comes from someone who loves the sport, and after a year in which some pretty good things have happened to me.

"More than my body, it is my mind that can't take it. If we add it all up, I need to rest."

European Tour: Jon Rahm aims to emulate Seve Ballesteros with third Spanish Open title

World No. 1 Jon Rahm is hopeful that he can emulate compatriot Seve Ballesteros by becoming only the second three-time winner of the Spanish Open when he tees off on home soil on Thursday.

Rahm, 26, is aiming for a hat trick of titles at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, having previously won in 2018 and 2019. The 2020 event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"It would be very unique. I know names like Ollie ( Jose Maria Olazabal ), he couldn't win it... I would hope to be able to get to a third not only to tie Seve but to win it three times in a row," Rahm said.

Ballesteros lifted the trophy in 1981, 1985 and 1995, the latter being the last of his 50 European Tour titles.

Rahm, who won the U.S. Open this year but missed the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19 , was part of the European team that was defeated by the Americans in the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits last month.

"It's coming back home that's important. It's very fun to play in front of the crowd, they're very golf hungry in this country. Especially after COVID and the pandemic..." he said.

This week is the start of three consecutive events in Spain on the European Tour, with the Spanish Open followed by the Andalucia Masters and the Mallorca Golf Open.

Despite chance to win race to dubai, jon rahm withdraws from european tour season finale, share this article.

The European Tour will be without a two-time champion and the No. 3 player on its points standings for next week’s season finale.

World No. 1 Jon Rahm withdrew from the DP World Tour Championship on Sunday, citing the need to rest and spend time with his family. Rahm won the Race to Dubai money title in 2019 and has twice won the tour’s season finale in 2017 and 2019.

“After lengthy discussions with my team, I have come to the difficult decision not to travel to Dubai next week. The demands of a long season with many ups and downs has taken a lot out of me. I feel I need to take time to recharge my batteries while spending quality time with my family,” Rahm said via a statement. “I would like to take this opportunity to wish DP World and the European Tour all the best for the season-ending event, which is always such a special tournament.”

It’s been a long year to say the least for Rahm, who is now a father after wife, Kelly, gave birth to baby Kepa before the Masters.

In 22 PGA Tour events last season, Rahm made the cut in all but one and earned 15 top-10s. The 27-year-old Spaniard won his first major at the U.S. Open in June at Torrey Pines just two weeks after being forced to withdraw from the Memorial with a six-shot lead after 54 holes due to a positive COVID-19 test. Another positive test kept Rahm from traveling to the Tokyo Olympics.

In nine European Tour starts in 2021, six were either majors or WGC events, where he finished: T-32 (WGC-Workday), T-5 (WGC-Match Play), T-5 (Masters), T-8 (PGA Championship), 1 (U.S. Open) and T-3 (British Open). He also finished seventh at the abrdn Scottish Open, T-17 at the Spanish Open and T-99 at the Andalucia Masters.

Jon Rahm touches down in Europe

Jun 28, 2017

Jon Rahm will play in the Open de Francia this Thursday in the European Tour, part of the Rolex Series, held on the same course that will host the Ryder Cup next year. Rahm is taking advantage of the fact that it is one of the most important tournaments of the year to make his debut in the European Tour, and while he’s at it, to get a taste of what the course is like where he’s confident he’ll be able to play against the US under captain Thomas Bjorn’s orders.

Rahm wants to get the bad taste out of his mouth from these past two weeks of competition in the Memorial and US Open. He missed two cuts in a row, a bump in the road that has already been forgotten, which was conveniently used to analyze where he’s at in his game and to grow as a golfer. In fact, Jon has been practicing and working hard the last ten days between the Taylormade facilities in San Diego the Open de France course itself, with his coach Eduardo Celles, to work on getting the good vibes back.

The first contact Rahm had with the course was good. The Spanish golfer is very happy with it and, most of all, with its high level of preparation. The key this week is to reach the fairway with the drive, due to the fact that it’s a bit long with the rainfall and the rough, despite not being as grueling as other years, can be a major setback. Jon trusts that he’s regained his confidence back in the club that has worked so flawlessly for him up until the Memorial.

As we stated above, the Open de Francia is part of the Rolex Series, a sequence of tournaments in the European Tour with a seven million dollar prize pool. Keep in mind that Rahm is highly ranked in the Race to Dubai, which means that a good score this week would put him a lot closer to first place, which is currently held by Sergio García.

Rahm will play this Thursday starting at eight in the morning with Alexander Levy, the local favorite this week, and Tommy Fleetwood. They’ll play on Friday starting at 1:00 pm. The weather forecast predicts stormy skies on Thursday and Friday with winds that will reach up 24 to 32 kilometers per hour until Saturday.

PGA Championship Big Board: How Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and everyone else stacks up

The PGA Championship may be the least-noticed major championship most years, but it brings an unusual level of intrigue to Valhalla Golf Club outside of Louisville, Ky., this week.

Scottie Scheffler won his last start, the RBC Heritage last month. He’s won four of his last five actually, including the Masters, Players Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational. Another win would create a summer of conversation around the pursuit of a grand slam.

Rory McIlroy has won his last two starts, including a dominant performance Sunday to win the signature event Wells Fargo Championship. He’s seeking to end his decade-long major drought, his last being the 2014 PGA at … Valhalla .

And Brooks Koepka , the defending PGA champion, won his last event, LIV Golf’s Singapore tournament. A sixth major championship of his career would tie him at 12th all-time with Lee Trevino, Nick Faldo and Phil Mickelson.

This is before we mention Jon Rahm, Ludvig Åberg, Xander Schauffele or any of the rest of the top contenders at Valhalla. There are plenty of them, which is why we’ve brought back our Big Board for this PGA Championship, ranking the top contenders in the field 1-40.

Jon Rahm ditched the PGA Tour for LIV Golf. So why is he talking like a PGA fanboy?

Jon rahm chose liv golf. and now he has the temerity to show up at the pga championship trying to position himself as a supporter of the pga tour and a member in the middle of a temporary absence.

european tour jon rahm

Maybe Jon Rahm knows something the rest of us don’t. Or maybe he’s the biggest sucker in professional golf, an easy mark who got sweet-talked and money-whipped by Greg Norman and the Saudis into taking a deal that will doom him to a lifetime of professional regret.

It was hard to tell Tuesday at the PGA Championship, when Rahm strolled into a press conference and said the following in response to a question about how he sees the PGA Tour’s messy backroom politics now that he plays for LIV Golf.

“You guys keep saying 'the other side,' but I’m still a PGA Tour member, whether suspended or not,” Rahm said. "I still want to support the PGA Tour. And I think that’s an important distinction to make. I don't feel like I'm on the other side, I’m just not playing there.”

Did Rahm’s reported $300 million contract with LIV come with a duty to abandon all pretense of self-awareness? Or has dining out on the Saudi dime eroded his thoughtfulness the same way it turned some of his colleagues ( cough, Dustin Johnson, cough) into monuments of the competitive fire they used to possess?

If Rahm believed sincerely last December that joining the hit-and-giggle tour would help bring the PGA Tour and LIV closer to unification, the only honest way to assess his decision is that it failed.

He’s not moving the needle for LIV, which remains a bizarre product that isn’t seriously competing for eyeballs with the PGA Tour.

His departure hasn't forced the PGA Tour to get its own house in order because all public indications are that it's as messy as ever behind the scenes.

And at this point, the goals of LIV and the Tour appear so far apart – and negotiations between them so slow – that it's difficult to conceive what it will take to get the best players in the world reunified under one banner.

If Rahm is happy as a LIV golfer, playing on a tour where the results don’t matter while most of his contemporaries and friends squabble over the Tour’s backroom politics, that’s perfectly fine. We are far beyond the point in this debacle where it’s worth the oxygen to criticize individuals for the career decisions they've made or worry about who’s got the moral high ground.

When it comes to who’s got the best interests of professional golf in mind, it's impossible at this point to distinguish the good guys from bad. That’s how badly the PGA Tour has bungled every aspect of the LIV threat.

But what’s very clear is that Rahm made a choice last December. And now he has the temerity to show up at the second major of the year trying to position himself not merely as a supporter of the PGA Tour but as a member in the middle of a well-paid, temporary absence?

That’s not going to fly with either golf fans or Rahm’s former colleagues. It’s intellectually dishonest. It’s borderline delusional. And it may be actively unhelpful given the current environment where there’s a clear divide between PGA Tour players pushing for unification and those on the PGA Tour policy board who seem at minimum to be resisting compromise.

Last week, the big drama involved a revelation that Rory McIlroy tried to get back on the policy board after resigning his seat last year but was blocked by the current members. Some reporting suggested a growing rift between McIlroy, who has advocated for striking a deal with the Saudi-run Public Investment Fund (PIF), and the current Tour powerbrokers who include Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods.

“It's good to see it differently, but collectively as a whole we want to see whatever is best for all the players, the fans and the state of golf,” Woods said Tuesday. “How we get there, that’s to be determined. But the fact we're in this together and in this fight together to make golf better is what it's all about.”

Meanwhile, Sports Illustrated reported Monday that investment mogul Jimmy Dunne, who worked closely with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and PIF leader Yasir Al-Rumayyan on last year’s framework agreement to bring the two entities together, has resigned his position on the PGA Tour board.

In a letter to his colleagues, Dunne wrote that “no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with the PIF” since the players were given more power in Tour decisions and that he can no longer help realize his goal of reunifying the game.

There’s no real clarity at the moment about what the Woods/Spieth/Cantlay group wants to see to get a deal done. Are they just flat-out opposed to the likes of Rahm and Brooks Koepka being able to play PGA Tour events after taking the Saudi money that they themselves refused? Do they simply want to play all their golf in North America rather than a more worldwide tour that the PIF would likely prefer?

It's hard to say because nobody wants to talk directly about terms given the sensitivity of negotiations that seem to be stalled.

“It’s ongoing, it’s fluid, it changes day to day,” Woods said. "Has there been progress? Yes. But it’s an ongoing negotiation so a lot of work ahead for all of us with this process, and we’re making steps. It may not be giant steps, but we’re making steps.”

Maybe they need to walk a little faster.

Divvying up the world’s best players across two tours has had a predictable effect on fans: They’re sick of the politics. They’re stunned by the greed. And they’re watching less golf on television this year as a result. Even the final round of the Masters this year took a hit, dropping 20 percent from 2023.

If you’re a golf fan who lives and breathes this stuff, the present is exhausting and the future is frightening. If you’re a more casual viewer or someone who buys a ticket to their local tournament one day a year, it’s completely nuts that McIlroy and Spieth are competing on a different tour than Rahm and Koepka. What planet are these guys living on?

Whether or not you have a moral objection to Saudi sportswashing and its growing influence in a wide profile of leagues across the world, the reality is that you can either bring them on mutually agreeable terms or let them destroy you. While LIV has not been a financial success and often seems like a caricature of a competitive sport with its 54-hole tournaments, distracting team format and dance music constantly blaring in the background, it’s not going away anytime soon.

And LIV has forced some long-overdue changes to the PGA Tour’s schedule, its purse structure and how players engage with the future of their enterprise. Phil Mickelson wasn't wrong about everything.

But at least Mickelson, as cynical and greedy as he was, picked a side and didn’t apologize for doing it. Rahm wants to play both sides while getting a pat on the back for the choice he didn't make as opposed to the one he made. He wants us to be just as wistful as he is that he no longer gets to play the Waste Management or the Farmers and is instead wasting time on unserious golf in Jeddah and Singapore.

But Rahm made his choice. He’s a LIV guy now who wants the PGA Tour guys to think he's still one of them. It doesn't work that way – not now, and maybe not ever.

Luke Donald blames LIV Golf move for Jon Rahm's dismal performance at PGA Championship

E uropean Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald insists he is "not too concerned" about Jon Rahm's poor form at the majors after the LIV Golf star missed the cut at the PGA Championship.

Rahm, a two-time major champion, joined LIV in December and managed to secure top 10 finishes in his first seven events on the Saudi Arabia-backed tour. However, the world No. 5 finished tied for a disappointing 45th place at The Masters, before ending his impressive run of making 18 consecutive cuts in the majors at Valhalla, finishing one shot outside the mark at even par on Friday to miss the weekend, where Xander Schauffele was crowned champion.

However, Donald remains confident in Rahm's abilities and he believes the 2022 Masters champion just needs more time to adjust to playing the LIV Golf schedule.

"Jon's record speaks for itself and what he's done," Donald said. "It's just a change. golfers are very much creatures of habit. You're used to four rounds and go to three, the mentality is a bit different and you have to push a little bit more because you have one less round to do it. Golfers are very much creatures of habit.

"It's all a bit new for him. His results on LIV certainly haven't been terrible, a lot of top 10s I know he hasn't won, but I'm not too concerned right now. Form is more important to me leading up to a Ryder Cup, not 15, 16 months out."

Rahm missed out on playing the weekend by the finest of margins, finishing at level-par after rounds of 70 and 72 in a week defined by low scores. "I made mistakes," Rahm conceded. "If you don't take fairways on this course, it is complicated."

Both Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton can represent Europe in the coming year provided they keep their DP World Tour card by playing at least four events each year.

The pair were invaluable to Europe's victory over the Americans in Rome last year. "If they follow the rules of the DP World Tour they are still eligible and they can still play," Donald confirmed.

Last week, the Ryder Cup captain – who fired a final round of 71 to finish at two-under-par for the tournament – visited next year's venue, Bethpage Black for a reconnaissance mission. Meanwhile, the United States is yet to name their captain as talks are still ongoing over the role, notably with Tiger Woods.

The easygoing Donald said: "We feel like we're on track and not really concerned what the US are doing at the moment. I know Tiger's very busy with everything going on on the PGA Policy Board.

"Maybe his focus right now is a little bit more on that. Whenever it's announced I'm looking forward to going up against whoever it is. It doesn't matter. If it's Tiger, great, if it's someone else it's no problem either."

2024 PGA Championship missed cuts: Jon Rahm, Wyndham Clark among stars not playing weekend at Valhalla

A number of recent major champions won't be around for the action this weekend in louisville.

jon-rahm-2024-pga-championship-round-2-g.jpg

Soft and calm conditions have engulfed Valhalla Golf Club this week for the 2024 PGA Championship. Players are taking it low as the golf course presents little obstacles and the receptive nature of the putting surfaces is ripe for pinpoint iron shots and subsequent birdies.

While some like Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler have thrived across the first two days, others were not as sharp. In a surprising twist, the three most recent U.S. Open champions -- Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick and Jon Rahm -- all fell on the wrong side of the 1-under cutline established Friday evening.

Rahm was the closest of the bunch to punch his weekend ticket as he posted a two-round total of even-par 142. The two-time major champion struggled early in his tournament playing his first six holes in 4 over but battled back nicely to post a 1-under round on Thursday. All that hard work was for not as sloppiness in his game was too much to overcome and marks Rahm's first weekend omission in a major since the 2019 PGA Championship.

His European Ryder Cup teammate, Fitzpatrick, endured a similar fate as the Englishman clawed past the cutline midway through his second round. After a poor start, Fitzpatrick rattled off three birdies in a four-hole stretch and looked keen on playing the weekend. Unfortunately, two bogeys in his last six holes were enough to send him packing.

Clark struggled to cross the finish line as well. The reigning U.S. Open champion stood at even par with four holes remaining only to play them bogey-double bogey-bogey-par and shoot a 36-hole total of 4-over 146. After a fast start to his season including a win at Pebble Beach, Clark has now missed the cut in the first two major championships.

Tiger Woods will not be around for the weekend as well following the fate of his 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla. The 15-time major champion was solid for most of his opening round, but two late bogeys turned an under-par round into an over-par effort, and he never recovered. The mistakes leaked into Friday and Woods saw his name drift to 8 over for the tournament when he played the first four holes of Valhalla in 7 over with two triple bogeys . Tiger was unable to recover from there.

Here's a look at the other notables who missed the cut this week at the 2024 PGA Championship.

At PGA, Rahm spikes club, then rallies into red numbers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Jon Rahm spiked his 7-iron into the fairway after yet another shot that didn’t go where he wanted on a day that never felt quite right.

About a half-hour after that, though, Rahm was smiling as he wrapped up Thursday’s opening round at the PGA Championship. A day filled with dropped drivers, spiked irons and too many early bogeys ended with a red number on the board — a respectable 1-under 70 that brought a glimmer of hope to go with all the frustration.

“How many times have you seen someone start down by one, two or three and then do what he needs to do?” Rahm said. “I usually think every time someone wins a tournament, there is always a day when he is down. But the other rounds are good.”

The two-time major champion withstood four bogeys over his first six holes and a putting day that ranked 121st in a field of 156 to leave Valhalla with something to build on.

He actually saved par after the approach on No. 16 that landed short and left and sent his 7-iron windmilling into the turf.

He made birdies on 17 and 18 to finish the final six holes in 4 under.

He played the front nine in 3-over 38 but the back in 4-under 32.

He had as much to celebrate as to chew on as he geared up for Friday, when the forecast calls for rain.

“I need to think about what happened,” he said. “I’ve had mental errors.”

Even with the comeback, Rahm finished Day 1 much closer to the cut line than to leader Xander Schauffele , who hours earlier had wrapped up a record-setting round of 9-under 62 that made it clear there were good scores to be had.

Rahm listed his tee shots on Nos. 5 and 12 as two that stood out as exceptionally bad.

He snapped the drive on 5 deep into the native rough to the left of the fairway. That led to his third bogey. On 12, he also yanked his tee shot left, and let his driver fall over his shoulder and onto the ground before the ball even landed.

He scrambled to save a par there, and that triggered a strong finish that turned what had looked like a ruined round into something better.

“Let’s see if tomorrow I do a different thing from the beginning,” Rahm said. “I want to start well.”

The 10 highest-paid athletes in the world

  • Forbes released its annual ranking of the world's highest-paid athletes.
  • The top 10 on the list have a combined income of $1.38 billion.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo is the world's highest-paid athlete of 2024, earning $260 million.

Insider Today

In May 2024, Forbes released its annual ranking of the world's highest-paid athletes, revealing the total salaries of sports' biggest stars.

The top 10 earners — all male — come from seven countries, play four sports, and have a combined income of over $1 billion thanks to their efforts on and off their respective fields, courts, courses, and pitches.

Forbes calculated players' incomes from May 1, 2023, to May 1, 2024. The publication reported that on-field earnings included factors like prize money, salaries, and bonuses, while off-field earnings included things like sponsorship deals, licensing income, and memorabilia. Taxes and agents' fees were not deducted from any player's income.

As the sports industry continues to reach new heights, here are 2024's 10 highest-paid athletes.

10. Lamar Jackson — $100.5 million

european tour jon rahm

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is a two-time NFL MVP known for his dual-threat abilities. During the 2023 season, he threw 307 completions for 3,678 yards and 24 passing touchdowns, ESPN reported. He also rushed for 821 yards and five touchdowns. Jackson led the Ravens to a 13-4 record, finishing as AFC North Division champs.

In May 2023, he signed a five-year, $260 million contract extension that included a massive $72.5 million signing bonus.

Forbes reported that Jackson earns an estimated $2 million outside the NFL thanks to his growing business portfolio, which includes a clothing line called Era 8, a production company, and a soul-food restaurant based in his hometown of Pompano Beach, Florida. Jackson also works with companies like Oakley and StatusPro.

9. Stephen Curry — $102 million

european tour jon rahm

Stephen Curry is a 3-point specialist who's undeniably changed the sport of basketball . Throughout his career, Curry and the Golden State Warriors have won four NBA championships. He won the 2022 NBA Finals MVP Award and is also a two-time NBA MVP, four-time All-NBA 1st-team selection, and the record-holder for most regular season 3-pointers of all time, with 3,747 and counting, ESPN reported.

His success yielded a lucrative four-year contract extension with Golden State in 2021 worth $215 million, Forbes reported, giving him an estimated annual salary of $52 million.

Off the court, Curry has an ongoing collaboration with Under Armour for The Curry Brand, which includes footwear, clothing, and accessories. He also has major sponsorship deals with brands like Subway, Rakuten, and Google for an estimated $50 million in additional earnings.

8. Karim Benzema — $106 million

european tour jon rahm

2022 Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema is a four-time French Player of the Year and a current member of Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League. The second all-time leading goal scorer at Real Madrid, Benzema is just one of many players to jump from a top-five European league to Saudi Arabia during the 2023 summer transfer window , marking an unprecedented mass exodus.

Forbes estimates his on-field earnings with Al-Ittihad equal $100 million, while his off-field earnings reach $6 million thanks to sponsors like Adidas, Volkswagen, and Michael Kors Holdings.

7. Neymar — $108 million

european tour jon rahm

As Brazil's all-time leading male goal scorer, Neymar has scored 79 goals in 128 international appearances. This puts him over Brazilian soccer legend Pelé , who had 77 goals during his career with the Brazilian national team. Neymar is also the highest-scoring Brazilian player in Champions League history, with 43 goals in the competition during his tenures at FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, per UEFA.com . Like Benzema, he transitioned from European soccer to the Saudi Pro League, joining Al-Hilal in 2023.

In addition to his $80 million in compensation, Neymar reportedly received a mansion, luxury cars, private jet access, and special permission to live with his girlfriend as part of his deal with Al-Hilal, Forbes reported. He also earns an estimated $28 million from deals with Skims, Puma, Red Bull, and more.

6. Kylian Mbappé — $110 million

european tour jon rahm

Kylian Mbappé has the world at his feet. At 25, he's already won the World Cup and reached the final of another, been named French Player of the Year three times, and has won the French Ligue 1 seven times, once with Monaco and six times with Paris Saint-Germain. Now, as his contract with PSG nears expiration in June, all eyes are on the French captain's next move.

In his final year with the club, he earned $90 million for his on-field performance. Mbappé also earns an additional $20 million from sponsorships with RIMOWA, Nike, Oakley, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton; his graphic novel, "Je m'appelle Kylian;" and his production company, Zebra Valley.

5. Giannis Antetokounmpo — $111 million

european tour jon rahm

Nicknamed the "Greek Freak," Giannis Antetokounmpo is an eight-time NBA All-Star and two-time league MVP who, in 2021, helped lead the Milwaukee Bucks to their first NBA Championship in 50 years. That same year, he was named to the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team alongside league legends like Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Yet Antetokounmpo earns more money off the court than he does on it. Forbes reported that he earns $46 million from the Bucks and $65 million from partnerships and sponsorships with brands like Starry and Amazon, his sixth signature shoe with Nike, and his production company.

4. LeBron James — $128.2 million

european tour jon rahm

Los Angeles Lakers power forward LeBron James is the all-time leading scorer in NBA history and the fourth all-time assists leader with 40,474 points and 11,009 assists, ESPN reported. He is a four-time NBA Champion, four-time Finals MVP, four-time league MVP, and 20-time All-Star. James has also made his mark internationally, winning two Olympic gold medals , and will pursue another this summer in Paris.

As the first active NBA player to become a billionaire and highest earning athlete off the court, James has certainly seen his fair share of contracts. For the 2023-2024 season, he signed a two-year maximum veteran contract extension with the Lakers worth about $99 million, and Forbes reports his annual on-field earnings as $48.2 million. Meanwhile, he earned $80 million from endorsement deals with PepsiCo, Nike, Beats by Dre, Taco Bell, and DraftKings. Forbes reports that one of James' key business strategies is to take equity in brands he works with, increasing his earnings.

3. Lionel Messi — $135 million

european tour jon rahm

Lionel Messi is widely regarded as the greatest soccer player of all time, and for good reason. The Argentine forward is an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner with more than 800 goals scored for club and country. In 2022, the all-time goal scorer and appearance maker for Argentina led his nation to a long-awaited World Cup victory, Goal.com reported. The following year, the former Barcelona star brought his talents stateside to David Beckham's Inter Miami in MLS, helping the team become the second-most valuable franchise in the league with a value of $1.03 billion, Forbes reports.

For his efforts, Messi reportedly earns $65 million from his salary, signing bonus, and Inter Miami stake. It's worth noting that his guaranteed salary of $20.4 million alone is more than the total pay of 25 MLS rosters, The Athletic reported. Off the field, he earns $70 million from sponsorships with Adidas, Apple, Konami, Gatorade, Mastercard, and more.

2. Jon Rahm — $218 million

european tour jon rahm

With wins at the 2023 US Open and Masters Tournament , Rahm was one of the major golf stars who switched from the PGA Tour to Saudi-backed LIV Golf in December 2023. The Spanish golfer has 11 PGA Tour wins and eight victories on the European Tour.

Rahm's LIV contract was reportedly worth $350 million guaranteed, and Forbes estimates he received half of this guarantee upfront. This means Rahm likely received $175 million from LIV for signing, as well as another $23 million in prize money and other bonuses from both LIV and the PGA Tour. As of May 13, Rahm has earned $6.6 million in prize money in 2024. He also earns $20 million in endorsements from Callaway Golf, Mercedes-Benz, and Rolex.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo — $260 million

european tour jon rahm

Cristiano Ronaldo is the highest-paid athlete in the world for the fourth time in his career and was the first active team sport athlete to earn over $1 billion, Forbes reported. A five-time Ballon d'Or winner, Ronaldo has scored over 850 goals for club and country, making him one of the most prolific goal-scorers in soccer history. In December 2022, he transferred from Manchester United to the Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr. As of May 21, 2024, ESPN reports that he leads the league this season with 33 goals.

His transfer resulted in an annual salary of $200 million from Al-Nassr. He also earns an estimated $60 million from other projects and deals, such as his CR7-branded clothing, accessories, hotels, and gyms, as well as sponsorships from Nike, Herbalife, and Unilever.
