7 must-do’s for gay travelers visiting Amsterdam

The Homomonument in Amsterdam is a beautiful and sobering reminder of the importance, and fragility, of our LGBTQ rights. It is popular with gay and straight visitors alike. Photo: Randall Shirley

Van Gogh Museum

Amsterdam boasts many art museums. One could spend days wandering their halls. If you’ve got time for just one, choose the Van Gogh. Few other artists, Dutch or otherwise, have captured such broad and ongoing public admiration. The outstanding museum’s permanent collection offers a career-long perspective of his work, from his earliest sketches through many of his well-known works. Both exquisite and approachable, the museum will enhance your appreciation of Van Gogh. Bonus: the museum’s café offers outstanding food, beer, and wine.

Go to Church

And we’re talking a different kind of worship! Club Church is a unique party/sex/dance space with a different theme each night of the week. My husband joined a Dutch friend on “anything goes” night and came back with eyes-a-poppin’! He’d seen just about every kind of sex happening—gay, straight, bi—but claims to have spent his time on the dance floor… who am I to doubt? Local Dutch friends speak highly of the venue, and it truly exhibits the openness and eases that their culture has around sex.

Amsterdam has a number of gay bars scattered around the city. We found them very friendly, with most everyone speaking excellent English. Highlights near the train station include the fun and chatty Club Prik, and a cruisey bar (complete with dark basement) called The Cuckoo’s Nest. Nearby, you can find the city’s main bathhouse/sauna for gay men, called Nieuwezijds Sauna. A few blocks away, several gay bars line Reguliersdwarsstraat, a very fun area to hang out in the after-work hours. Super-friendly locals offer a warm welcome, making you feel you’ve escaped the major tourist zone.

Eat Pancakes

The Dutch may not have invented pancakes, but their culture embraces them as a staple. Amsterdam has outstanding restaurants specializing in “pannenkoeken,” served sweet or savory (we liked both! ) A popular chain is called Pancakes Amsterdam , and while it required a wait for a table, we completely enjoyed a meal of crepe-like pancakes topped with ham, mushrooms, and cheese. For a more intimate option, we sampled sweet pancakes which came rolled up and cut into bite-size pieces at The Happy Pig . YUM.

De Hallen Market and environs

A visit to De Hallen Market was a highlight of our Amsterdam time—a true hidden gem recommended by a Dutch friend. De Hallen is a collection of unique boutique shops, food-court-style eating, and groovy culture, all under one roof. We didn’t find it touristy at all, and we were there in high season. The surrounding Kinkerbuurt neighborhood was pleasant and felt like a “real” and current place where normal Amsterdamers live.

Additional Amsterdam tips

If you have more time, other great activities include: a visit to the Amsterdam Museum , taking a canal cruise, checking out the Hermitage Museum , and renting bikes. If you’re looking for something a bit quieter, Mark and Dale listed Amsterdam’s Beghinhof   among their favorite cruise experiences.

A one-hour canal cruise is a superb way to get a sense of what's what, where's where, and why it all matters in Amsterdam. Photo: Randall Shirley

A one-hour canal cruise will give you a more complete picture of the city. Photo: Randall Shirley

Don’t bother : Amsterdam Sex Museum (sounds fun, but is tired and very straight).

Where to stay : If you’re in Amsterdam a few days before or after your cruise, I recommend the Kimpton De Witt Hotel.  The Kimpton offers a central location to most Amsterdam attractions. Although not in the gayest neighborhood, we easily found gay bars and the main bathhouse within 5 minutes walk. The rooms and property are gorgeous.

The very cool Kimpton De Witt Hotel in Amsterdam is an excellent and very hip place to spend a few nights in the city. The tile in the bathroom is so cool! Photo: Randall Shirley

Note : The author and his husband paid for their own Amsterdam travels. Amsterdam Marketing generously provided Amsterdam City Cards which allow for entry into multiple cultural venues as well as discounts and unlimited public transit for a certain number of days. In our experience, the cards represent good value for the purchase.

12 top gay cruises you don’t want to miss in 2024 and 2025

All Inclusive Project_Celebrity Cruises_00012

There's never been a better time to consider a gay cruise. Itineraries include more remote destinations, and more charter companies are offering a wider variety of cruise experiences to meet the full spectrum of the LGBTQ+ community. Also, the ships chartered are almost uniformly elevated and luxurious.

No longer are gay and lesbian groups and full-ship charters relegated to older, tired vessels. Full-ship gay charters command big business for the cruise industry, and major cruise lines are responding by offering their newest and most exciting ships. Many charter companies will take over the entire ship, bringing aboard their own dance parties, entertainment, activities and hosts to tailor the vacation experience to their audience.

The magic of a gay cruise lies in the shared experience of traveling with your community. Each sailing fosters an environment where you can be yourself. You can choose whether to blend in with the crowd or stand out and be celebrated for your flair.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Bonds often form more quickly and naturally aboard a ship where you're surrounded by your people, especially on full-ship charters where large mixers kick off each sailing.

Expect welcome parties with themes that go beyond just a name tag, whether that's icebreaker games or an opportunity to dress up in a way that signifies where you're from or how you identify. You'll find more openness throughout the ship compared to a traditional non-themed cruise, especially on the pool deck, as many passengers seek out the experience to expand their social circle.

Don't miss the boat on making lifelong friends during an epic cruise vacation. Here are 12 of the best gay cruises in 2024 and 2025.

Nieuwe Meer

The Nieuwe Meer / De Oeverlanden is a recreational area at a small lake just outside the city centre of Amsterdam. In summer you can bathe in the sun and swim in the lake. It's the perfect place to relax and check out for some fun.

On the other side of the bicycle path there is the clothing optional area. Here naked sunbathing is allowed. The small forest is the biggest cruising area in Amsterdam. 24x7 cruising here.

See our map for the cruising area. The marker is set to the central open space. During the day on summer this is the nude bathing area. The cruising is (seen from the bicycle path) on the right and left of this open space.

The best way to get to the Oeverlanden is by bicycle. There is also a bus stop on a short walking distance. On Oude Haagseweg there is also a parking lot, at night this is also a place for car cruising.

Gay cruising is 24/7, but it depends very much on the weather and season.

When cruising at night be very careful. Also make sure to stay in the area. Nudity outside the cruising area is fined. Officially this includes naked swimming in the lake.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

From shaking beds to gender-neutral toilets, we’re flying the flag for these inclusive cruises

An LGBTQ+ couple on a Virgin Voyages cruise

A holiday isn’t a holiday if it makes life more difficult, right? And for many, a cruising trip abroad can feel like a bridge too far.

If you’ve ever gone away and been tutted at or gawked at while enjoying a moment at the bar, you’d probably rather stay home instead.

Well, a number of cruise operators have been thinking about how to make their trips more inclusive and accessible to a wider variety of guests, and their efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Whether it’s gender-neutral toilets or sign language interpreters, we’ve plucked the boats that boast a better experience for everyone from the Sailawaze Excellence Awards .

Virgin Voyages

After a day of sightseeing, what can be more entertaining than a night of drag performance? It’s par for the course at Virgin Voyages, where all staff are encouraged to express their gender identity freely.

The company prides itself on being a welcoming space for LGBTQ+ passengers with its gender-neutral toilets and hospitable atmosphere.

Founder Richard Branson has a long history of supporting gay rights, beginning with legendary Heaven nightclub in London, and the celebrations on his ships ramp up in June as themed parties are thrown and guests are presented with pride-inspired cocktails and on-deck DJs.

A wedding on a Virgin Voyages cruise

Celebrity Cruises

If you thought cruises were only for the silver-haired, you’d be wrong. Celebrity Cruises are a riot of colour, flying every hue of the LGBTQ+ flag – especially in June, Pride Month.

The operation, which travels to every continent, even hosted the first legal same-sex marriage at sea in 2018 and regularly holds gay weddings.

Celebrity Cruises says it promotes diversity among both staff and guests and throws regular LGBTQ+ welcome events to get the party started.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line

Family-friendly operators Disney Cruise Line prides itself on making trips accessible to those with additional needs. Guests with disabilities have access to comfortable staterooms and suites, along with a full range of services, facilities, and amenities, including auxiliary aids.

Its liners are also home to specially designed communication staterooms for guests with hearing disabilities, including a vibrating bed shaker under the mattress and an indicating panel with light signals for the doorbell, telephone calls, general alarm and fire alarm.

The ships also provide sign language interpreters for shows and entertainment.

Saga Cruises

If a loud party isn’t for you, over 50s can enjoy a more sedate voyage, with Saga Cruises providing a number of options for guests with mobility issues. A chauffeur service to and from ports is provided as standard on all trips, rooms are equipped with hearing loop systems and hoists are available to help guests in and out of the pools.

Assistance is also provided to those who need help with baggage and large print is provided in the cinema guide and daily paper, alongside Braille playing cards.

A-Rosa Cruises

A child doing a peace sign in a pool on a ship.

Meanwhile, A-Rosa Cruises are designed with families and multi-generational groups in mind. Under-15s travel for free and family rooms have been provided so up to five can share a room while they meander along Europe’s rivers, waking up in a different city each day.

Hosts are available to take care of youngsters in the kids club, where children can choose from a variety of activities, including crafting, T-shirt design and face painting while adults can enjoy a relaxing treatment at the spa.
