10 of the best British farm attractions
Easter’s not complete without lambs and chicks, and the UK’s family-friendly farm attractions are geared up for the school holidays, with events from rides and races to bottle feeding
Stockley Farm Park, Cheshire
This organic dairy and arable farm prides itself on a “hands-on” approach: visitors are encouraged to feed and groom the animals and watch planting and milking parlour demonstrations. Budding farmers can get a taste of agricultural life by signing up for its Young Farmer Academy: two-hour sessions aimed at 7-to-12-year-olds, with the chance to take part in behind-the-scenes activities, while learning about animal husbandry or arable farming (next session 13 April, £15pp). Over the Easter holidays (1-17 April), there’ll be extra activities such as Easter egg hunts, sheep races and bird of prey displays. Adult £9.20, 2–16s £8.20, under-twos £1.75, family £33, 10% online discount, stockleyfarm.co.uk
Odds Farm Park, Buckinghamshire
Odds Farm Park was named attraction of the year at the 2017 National Farm Attractions Network awards. There’s a packed programme of daily events, from bottle feeding goats to milking cows, plus tractor and trailer rides, a play barn and huge wooden outdoor play area and sandpit. During the Easter holidays, children can meet the farm’s newest arrivals, including piglets and lambs, take part in Easter-themed crafts and follow an Easter bunny trail to earn a chocolate reward. Adult £14.50, 2-16s £13.50, oddsfarm.co.uk
Good Day Out, Powys
Sheep-trekking, sheepdog herding and “pig-nics” are just a few of the unusual and educational experiences offered by Good Day Out, which raises money for local causes by offering interactive farm visits in the Brecon Beacons. One of the most popular options for families is a two-hour “sheep trekking” package at Aberhyddnant organic hill farm. Visitors pick a walking companion from a small flock of Jacob sheep, harness it up and take it for a scenic hike along an old drovers’ track (next walk 16 April, adult £35, child £25). Piggy Walks, where you take a pair of miniature kune kune pigs on a stroll and a picnic are great for younger children (next one 15 April, adult £25, child £10). gooddayout.co.uk
Hall Hill Farm, County Durham
Spring is one of the busiest times of year on sheep farms. On 7 April, Hall Hill Farm will be hosting a Lambing Live Open Day, with extended opening hours (10.30am-9pm) so that visitors can see births as they happen and visit new-born lambs in the maternity barn (baaarn, surely?). The shepherd will be on hand to answer questions, such as how to spot when a ewe is close to lambing. The lambing will continue until early May, and there will be plenty of opportunities to bottle-feed new arrivals and watch births on the farm’s “lamb cam”. There are also donkey rides, puppet shows, crazy golf and sheep races. Adult £7.95, 2-15s £7.50, family £28.50, hallhillfarm.co.uk
Mudchute Farm, London
Set in 32 acres on the Isle of Dogs, this inner-city farm brings a little slice of rural life to the East End. As well as the working farm, there’s a petting zoo, duck pond and equestrian centre, with an all-weather floodlit riding arena and show jumps. Outdoor enclosures house rare-breed sheep (including some new-born lambs), llamas, alpacas, pigs and ponies. Regular events include craft activities, exercise boot camps and dog agility lessons. The ever-popular Mudchute Kitchen is a great spot for breakfast or brunch, or take a picnic and admire the surreal view of Canary Wharf towering above the fields of grazing sheep. Free, mudchute.org
Blackstone Clydesdales, Ayrshire
This family farm offers the opportunity to get up close to working Clydesdale horses and other farm animals on specially tailored “experiences”. There’s no set routine: visitors book a time slot and choose from various options with the help of one of the Blackstone family: there’s riding one of the Clydesdales, in the saddle, in a carriage or in harness to work the land, or grooming, mucking out and feeding the resident alpacas, donkeys and Highland cattle. Experiences from £37pp, family 2-hour package (4-9 people) from £190. Guided farm tours £10pp, blackstoneclydesdales.co.uk
Bocketts Farm Park, Surrey
Unlike some “farm attractions” which are really just theme parks with animals, Bocketts is still very much a working sheep farm. Around 500 lambs are expected to arrive over the next month or two and lucky visitors might even get to watch one being born. Over the Easter holidays there will be twice-daily Meet the Shepherd sessions, animal-handling encounters (including chicks and bunnies), a quiz trail, storytelling sessions, goat milking demonstrations, pig racing and pony and tractor rides. Trampolines, giant slides, two indoor play barns and outdoor adventure trails make for an action-packed day out. Adult £10.50, 3-17s £10.95, bockettsfarm.co.uk
The Big Sheep, Devon
No list of farm attractions is complete without the Big Sheep, which has transformed itself from humble livestock farm to one of Devon’s top family attractions. This is not the place to come for insight into the daily life of a farmer – the vibe is definitely more theme park – but what it lacks in authenticity it more than makes up for in entertainment value, with rides (including Devon’s largest rollercoaster), the Ewetopia indoor playground, laser tag, climbing walls and the ever-popular sheep races. The annual Easter Eggstravaganza Festival (1–17 April) will include a massive egg hunt for 30,000 chocolate eggs, orphan lambs to feed, and baby chicks and bunnies to pet in the animal barn. Adult £13.95, child £13.95, under 3ft tall £6, under 12 months free, 20% online discount, thebigsheep.co.uk
Baylham House, Suffolk
This small livestock farm specialises in breeds once common on British farms, but now under threat. Children can get really close to the animals, with opportunities to groom goats and pigs, stroke rabbits, feed chickens and hunt for new-laid eggs. The lambing tunnel is expected to be a hive of activity during the Easter holidays and, from 14–17 April, there will be Easter-themed activities, including a treasure hunt and a chance to meet new-born lambs. Children can have a go at building a shelter in the Den Building area, play pooh sticks on the stream, get lost in the maze or play on the rope swing. Adult £7, 4–16s £3, family £18, baylham-house-farm.co.uk

7 best farms to visit with kids in the UK
Spring is without doubt the best time for a trip to a farm. Tractors are primed and ready for farm safaris, ponies are champing at the bit for young equestrians, first buds are breaking cover and mini-beasts are out in force. And, once lambing season is underway, between December and early April, the UK’s farms come alive with fleecy, gambolling cuteness. Here are our favourite places for fun on the farm.
1/7 Cotswold Farm Park, Cheltenham
Photo: Cotswold Farm Park
Lambing is in full swing at Cotswold Farm Park from mid-February and if kids are interested in seeing the miracle live, this is the place. Younger farmers can try their hand bottle-feeding new born lambs or goats and the Touch Barn’s packed with chicks and fluffy baby rabbits at the moment.
Outside, there’s the puzzling park maze and adventure playground. Or, you can sign up for a guided Farm Safari and let kids see the non-fluffy-cuteness side of the country.
The park’s woodland walks are lovely too. If it’s not quite picnic weather, the café is always open for home-baked treats and hot drinks.
When: Seven days from 10.30am to 5pm
Where: Cotswold Farm Park, Guiting Power GL54 5UG. Half an hour’s drive from Cheltenham on the A40 Oxford Road
Cost: child (4-15) £10.50, under 4s £7.50 and adults £12
Find out more about Cotswold Farm Park
2/7 odds farm park, high wycombe.
Photo: Odds Farm Park
When Odds Farm say, ‘kid’s activities, all day, every day, whatever the weather’, they really mean it. Of course, they have lambs in the spring and the undercover Animal Contact Barn means even younger kids can feel the cuteness. Other close encounters with pigs, goats, cows, donkeys, horses, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs are part of the experience here too. The park specialises in rare breeds, so curious creatures aren’t uncommon and there’s always someone on hand to answer questions.
Kids can get into milking, egg collecting, helping out at Piggy Teatime, feeding baby animals and dozens of other farm ‘chores’. And when they need a break from work, playtime’s covered with go-kart tracks, adventure playgrounds, storytelling, craft workshops and crazy golf.
Some events are seasonal but just as many are every-day, so this is a fine farm to visit any time.
When: Seven days from 10am to 5.30pm
Where: Odds Farm Park, Wooburn Common, High Wycombe HP10 0LX. 20 minutes from Maidenhead on the Clivedon Road
Cost: child from £9.50, adult from £10.50
Find out more about Odds Farm Park
3/7 dairyland farm world, newquay.
Photo: DairyLand Farmworld
Another farm that doesn’t let the weather get in the way of a good time, DairyLand mixes up animal encounters and fun tasks, has several play zones (indoor and out) and organises family events all year round.
Recommended as one of the Best Days Out in Cornwall, the focus here’s on dairy (the name was probably a hint) but cows aren’t the only creatures to meet. Younger kids love Pat-a-Pet encounters with goats, ponies, sheep and rabbits and bolder, older children get to help with milking and meet the rare breed herd.
The farm has family nature trails and wildlife treks any time, but kids can only get lost in the vast Maize Maze at the height of summer – another excuse to visit Newquay when the sun’s shining.
When: seven days from 10am to 5pm
Where: DairyLand Farm World, Newquay TR8 5AA. 20 minutes from Newquay on the A3058
Find out more about DairyLand Farm World
4/7 swansea community farm.
Photo: Swansea Community Farm
If you’re looking for a more hands-on experience, the community farm just outside Swansea is perfect. Kids can help out with the animals here, get good and grubby in the garden and learn all about the nitty-gritty of working on the land. Not quite as arduous as it sounds, the team of friendly volunteers make even the mucky tasks an adventure and decidedly docile livestock are plenty good fun to be around.
You can just go along and visit, there’s always something new to see. But take wellies – just in case you can’t resist the lure of honest toil.
When: Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm
Where: Swansea Community Farm, 2 Pontarddulais Road, Fforestfach SA4 4BA. 15 minutes from Swansea city centre on the A483
Find out more about Swansea Community Farm
5/7 gorgie city farm, edinburgh.
Photo: Gorgie City Farm
Just 5km from the centre of Edinburgh, Gorgie City Farm’s been around since the 1970s, keeping generations of city folk in touch with the country.
Fun and learning are what to expect here and enthusiastic volunteers are experts at engaging kids with real-life farming and getting them involved in everything from feeding animals to vegetable gardening.
Permanent residents include sheep, goats, cows, ducks and pigs: visit at the right time and there’s a high chance of piglets too, the record is 32 in one litter!
Gorgie’s free and has a brilliant farm stall for fresh hen’s eggs and, occasionally, duck eggs – though it’s more common to see sweet ducklings roaming around. They also have a flock of Pygmy Goats, which are almost as cute as lambs.
When: seven days from 9.30am to 4pm
Where: Gorgie City Farm, 51 Gorgie Road EH11 2LA. 15 minutes walk from Haymarket Station along Dalry Road
Find out more about Gorgie City Farm
6/7 cannon hall farm, barnsley.
Photo: Cannon Hall Farm
Not content with lambs, Cannon Hall Farm has a Lambing Festival until 26 February. If your aren’t sure what that is exactly: think lambs everywhere, bottle feeding new-born lambs, shepherd workshops and a Lamb Disco.
Seasoned visitors to this fantastic farm won’t even be slightly surprised by the idea of dancing lambs. It’s just one of many brilliantly off-beat events Cannon Hall organise during the year. So if you miss the Lambing Festival don’t fret, you can always go along for Sheep Racing, Superhero Parties, Stargazing or the huge annual Farm Food Festival in August.
As well as sheep, kids can meet goats, horses, pigs and piglets, baby llamas, Shetland ponies, Highland cattle and not one, but two, resident reindeer. There’s also an indoor play area, outdoor adventure playground and a truly exceptional Farm Shop selling local produce – apparently people visit the farm just to buy sausages.
When: Seven days from 10am to 5pm
Where: Cannon Hall Farm, Bark House Lane, Cawthorne, Barnsley S75 4AT. 10 minutes west of Barnsley on the A635
Cost: £5.95 at weekends and £3.95 on weekdays
Find out more about Cannon Hall Farm
7/7 mudchute park & farm, isle of dogs, london.
Photo: Mudchute Park & Farm
For a day in the country with a view of the city, head to Mudchute. It’s one of the largest urban farms in Europe and covers an astonishing 32 acres of land right in the heart of London’s East End.
Lambs aren’t a promise here, but there are plenty of compensations like piglets and seriously fancy fowl, curious traditional sheep breeds, donkeys, goats, llamas, alpaca and an entire aviary filled with birds. It’s a great space for wandering around and if kids get tired of farm animal, the park’s a mini-beast paradise – even in colder weather.
Mudchute’s free and has kid’s events and activities all year round. There’s also a riding school and if you’re interested in keeping chickens or spinning wool, you could sign up for one of their excellent adult workshops.
When: Seven days from 8am to 4pm
Where: Mudchute Park & Farm, Pier Street, Isle of Dogs E14 3HP. Nearest DLR Stations are Mudchute, Crossharbour and Island Gardens

Mabie Farm Park, Dumfries
Set within 77 hectares of land, there’s plenty to explore at Mabie Farm, including Highland, Jersey and Shetland cows, indoor and outdoor play areas, tractor rides, an aviary and even some water buffalo! The vast majority of farms function as working farms; producing crops or other animal products like milk, cheese and butter for businesses and restaurants. All the facilities have been refurbished, the large outdoor play and picnic area enhanced, and a huge new sandpit added. There are electric karts, barrel rides, an extended petting barn, a new mini train ride and gigantic air bouncers.
The paths are now more pram and wheelchair friendly and a nice touch is the audio information boards about the animals. On-site café The Hungry Monk offers favourites such as homemade chips and stone-baked pizzas, with vegan and vegetarian options available.

Canon Hall Farm is absolutely my favourite 🙂 Personally I find Creepy Crawlies very expensive. Murton is also worth a visit X
Thanks, I’ve not heard about Murton! We haven’t been to Cannon Hall since they added the giant indoor play area – it looks really good!
Went to Swithens Farm today. Had a great time and loved feeding the animals! http://www.swithensfarm.co.uk
Cannon hall brill but expensive for a family
Whirlow Hall Farm is great – especially on weekend when there are free farm tours (donations welcome), farm shop and butchery, cafe, kids parties, large play area. Lots to do and see in a beautiful part of the world.
Thank you for the suggestion Kelvin. It sounds great!
OMG these animals are cute!

10 city farms to visit in the UK
As well as being places to rear livestock and grow crops, city farms are essential green lungs in our densely populated towns and cities. We've selected 10 to visit up and down the country.
Sarah McPherson
City farms offer people the chance to spend time outdoors while connecting with others from their local community. They also create essential spaces for nature in urban landscapes. We've selected ten to visit, all of which have great wildlife value as well as a variety of farm animals to meet and activities to try.
• What are city farms and why are they important?
Balsall Heath City Farm, Birmingham
A small city farm just south of Birmingham city centre, which opened in 1980 to support the local community in Balsall Heath. The farm started life with a few chickens and a couple of goats, but has grown with help from community volunteers. Wild visitors today include foxes and common garden birds , and the farm is adding new hedgerows, bug hotels and a pollinator bed to attract more wildlife.
Check out the Balsall Heath City Farm page on Facebook
Gorse Hill City Farm, Leicester
Established by 30 local people in 1985, these former allotments cover 20 acres in the west of the city. Today, the site hosts more than 100 farm animals and also has a wildlife garden and pond. You can spot buzzards and sparrowhawks there, and they’ve seen a big increase in bees and butterflies thanks to nature-friendly planting.
Visit gorsehillcityfarm.org.uk
St James City Farm, Gloucester
A short walk from the city centre, this city farm was established in 1998. It is home to rare-breed pigs and sheep and also hosts a successful riding school. Visitors can get involved in projects that range from growing vegetables to designing and building livestock housing, surrounded by sweet violets, grey wagtails and comma butterflies.

Hackney City Farm, London
Previously a derelict and scruffy lorry park, this site became a city farm in 1984 - and has since transformed into a thriving community resource. It packs a real punch in terms of habitats within a small area. There’s everything from a woodland to allotments to a cottage garden. Several beehives hidden away onsite provide pollinators a variety of trees and plants in the local gardens and parks, and the farm is home to bluebells, rare stag beetles and dove’s foot cranesbill.

Meanwood Valley Urban Farm, Leeds
Opened in 1980 near the centre of Leeds, Meanwood began its operations from two old caravans and today manages a site of 26 acres. It has a long history of farming and is home to a range of habitats, from woodland to pasture; a stream also runs through its heart. Various minibeast-friendly habitats are found on the farm, which are regularly explored by school groups on educational visits. It's a good site for kestrels , and smooth newts and white-clawed crayfish live in the stream.

Love Gorgie City Farm, Edinburgh
Just a couple of kilometres walk from the city centre, tucked between a busy railway line and a main road, this city farm is located on a once-derelict site that was saved by the local community and turned into a treasured green space. The farm hosts an Earth School that promotes eco-friendly farming among young people, and you can spot red campion, hedgehogs and tree bumblebees.
Visit lovegorgiefarm.org.uk
Ouseburn Farm, Newcastle
This community-run farm was set up in the 1970s by local parents who wanted their children to experience nature, care for animals and grow their own food. It’s a short walk from the River Tyne in the heart of the city and attracts charismatic birds such as kingfishers and insects such as southern hawker dragonflies . It is also a care farm, offering opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and difficulties to learn new skills and connect with nature.
Visit ouseburnfarm.org.uk
Oxford City Farm, Oxford
A community-run farm in the heart of Oxford, located on a once-derelict site covering just over two acres. It was established in 2008 with the ethos of providing a safe outdoor space to promote a healthier, more resilient and connected community. Volunteers and visitors can learn new growing and cooking skills and take part in activities such as tree-planting. Connecting people with nature is central to life here, and there are regular sightings of wildlife such as green woodpeckers and foxes .
Visit oxfordcityfarm.org.uk
Spitalfields City Farm, London
Situated on a former railway goods yard in one of the most densely populated wards of Tower Hamlets, this farm has been welcoming Londoners since 1978, when it became established in response to a demand for allotments. Chickens, geese and goats soon followed. The 1.3 acre site has a dedicated wildlife garden, including a butterfly garden, and has become a haven for wildflowers and pollinators. There are logpiles for minibeasts and even great crested newts in the wildlife pond.
Visit spitalfieldscityfarm.org
St Werburgh's City Farm, Bristol
An inner-city oasis, this city farm is spread across a number of sites, connecting local people with farm animals and providing much-needed space to grow food on community allotments. The farm includes a 2.5 acre conservation woodland as well as a bee garden and picnic site, which is packed with pollinator-friendly plants. You can spot sparrowhawks , early dog-violets and small tortoiseshells here.

Farm stays are having a moment in the UK: here's 7 you can check out
Jul 3, 2020 • 3 min read
Farm stays are becoming increasingly popular with UK holidaymakers this year ©Maskot/Getty Images
Blame it on the rise of cottagecore or restrictions on international travel but it seems the allure of getting back to nature has brought a wave of new holidaymakers to farm stays this year, particularly younger people.
Ask any millennial what they're into and they'll likely tell you: house plants, wine, figuring out which Harry Potter house they belong to and now, farm stays. Since the UK government announced that tourism businesses could reopen on July 4, Farm Stay UK (a non-profit cooperative of rural accommodations) said it's seen its website traffic go through the roof with an increase of more than 200% from last year, the vast majority of visitors being 25 - 35 year-olds.
“Younger people are being attracted to the countryside for the wider experiences that are on offer, while at the same time offering a secluded place for them to relax," said Farm Stay chairman Kay Barriball. "Post-lockdown, instead of visiting cities, they're looking for rural accommodations close to outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling and those that have swimming pools and hot tubs, so they can create similar memories to going abroad but staying right here in the UK."
Whatever your age, farm stays offer a real change from the grind of urban living and convenient access to nature. If you're planning to try one out this year, here are seven farm stays throughout the UK that are particularly popular with guests; giving them the chance to take part in picking, preparing and eating the produce on site, or exploring nearby nature spots and getting back to basics.

Best farms stays in Britain
Live alongside the livestock in the yorkshire dales.
Tucked away amid the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales , the Wensleydale Experience brings together rustic luxury and real life farming. Come here to meet the resident highland cattle and rare-breed pigs, but stay for the gorgeous, impossible-to-leave accommodation.
On farm tours, you’ll learn about sheep farming and its impact on our economy and get to pitch in with brushing their affectionate rabbit or feeding the Shetland pony. There’s cattle, chickens and even llamas to meet, and the pygmy goats are known for joining in with the tours. At the right time of year, you might even get to bottle-feed a young calf or witness lambs being born in spring.
And when you’re not working hard with the animals, you can kick back in one of the farm’s six yurts. More than just a round tent in a field, these bijou little boltholes have proper double beds, elevated outdoor decking for sundowners and even showers, toilets and private hot tubs. The best part? Those endless Yorkshire Dales views. wensleydale-experience.com

Try foraging and falconry in the Cotswolds
The Notgrove Estate is so quintessentially Cotswolds with its dry stone walls and picture-perfect cottages, it almost feels like a film set. It’s very real indeed, though, and it has been in the hands of the Acland family for decades. Harry Acland, its current custodian, has turned the 1,500 acre estate into a veritable adventure destination while keeping its farming roots firmly grounded.
Come to stay in one of their glamping pods, luxurious self-catering safari tents or the modern apartments and you’ll get to roam freely around the estate on foot or – if you’re feeling adventurous – on an electric quad bike, and take part in exciting rural experiences. Try foraging for the wild food that grows all around us, from nettles to berries, with a local expert, or take a hike into the forest with a falconer to watch birds of prey hunt in their natural habitat. notgroveholidays.com
Learn some rural skills in Monmouthshire
TV’s own Kate Humble and her husband Ludo Graham got drunk at a friend’s house one night and a few weeks later, ended up living on a farm. Okay, it wasn’t quite as simple (or fast) as that, but that was one of the many things that led Humble and Graham to opening Humble by Nature, a gorgeous, 117-acre working farm in the Welsh countryside.
Today, it’s a serious operation. There are rare pigs, cows, chickens and sheep, all looked after by farmer Tim, and a handful of holiday cottages and shepherd’s huts offer you the opportunity to stay amongst it all. There’s more to it than just farming, though. The whole place was designed to connect the public with the land, and reintroduce the rural skills that have long dwindled from CVs over the past century. Come here and you can learn everything from traditional hedge laying to dry stone walling and willow weaving. humblebynature.com
Go pro with grow your own in Kent
Known as the Garden of England, Kent is a rich, fertile land where fruit and hops have flourished on farms for centuries. At Rebel Farmer, just on the edge of the Kent Downs, the fruit and veg grown on Ed Kyrke-Smith’s land is all ethically grown using no-dig/permaculture methods and it’s all chemical-free.
From rare heritage crops, including unusual strains of wheat, to micro greens and salad, there’s a lot to get hands on with when you stay here. You can take an “introduction to growing” tour where you’ll get to see the whole operation, or a family-friendly gardening course. Accommodation is in the handsome 21-foot tipi, which sleeps up to five and has a shower block and compost toilet nearby. rebelfarmer.co.uk//rebel-farmer-tipi-stays
Pick your own wine in Devon
Staying on a vineyard has its obvious advantages: not only do you get access to some of the best bottles from recent vintages, but you’ll probably be one of the few to taste what’s going into the next lot, too. At Old Walls Vineyard in Devon, there vineyard tours and tastings of their reds, whites, sparkling and rosé wines for everyone, but those who stay during the autumn months can take part in the “stay and pick experience”.
For four nights, you’ll stay in one of their six luxury lodges which overlook the vines, spend your days harvesting the grapes (until you get bored), and evenings watching the sun set over the vineyard with a good vintage in hand. There’ll be wine tasting and experts on hand to answer your questions on all things viticulture, and hearty breakfasts in the onsite bistro. Best of all? They’ll send you a case of the wine you made when it’s bottled the following year. oldwallsvineyard.co.uk/stay-and-pick-experience
Learn to shear sheep in Aberdeenshire
Where else in the world can you learn to shear a sheep and spot dolphins on the same day? Right on the Aberdeenshire coast, with ocean views and rolling pasture, Stonebriggs is a gorgeous 200-acre, family-run beef farm. Alongside their cattle, there’s a herd of woolly sheep which, come springtime, need a good haircut.
Come to stay here and you’ll get the opportunity to join in the shearing, learning why it’s done, how the clippers work and perhaps even have a go yourself. At the right time of year – usually in June and December – you can also help out with the lambing season and see the delivery of their Dorset Horn sheep. Accommodation is glamping style in shepherd’s huts and barrel-shaped lodges. downonthefarm.net/farm-experiences-aberdeenshire

Or waking up in a farmhouse, then venturing out as the mist rises to go wild swimming? These are amongst the exciting things on offer in this delightful farm in Shropshire.
Upper Shadymore Farm’s design comes from its original use as a deer park that was created by Robert of Stapleton in 1284. The park still has two herds of fallow and red deer that can be seen on the 200-acre farm, alongside other animals throughout the year; from pedigree sheep and their lambs in the spring, to beef cattle and Black Rock and Speckledy hens. featherdown.co.uk/location/upper-shadymoor-farm
Meet the farm animals, North Yorkshire
A wigwam in Scarborough you say? Humble Bee Farm is not your typical rural farmhouse break – you get a lot closer to the farm yard animals when sleeping in a wooden wigwam, set in a 320 acre farm, and get to leave your modern luxuries and conveniences at home.
You can follow the signposts from the farm and walk along the Yorkshire coast or jump aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and take a journey back in time traveling through the heart of the moors.
If you would prefer a bit more luxury you can stay in one of the cottages – a 200 year old barn conversion. Two of the cottages have hut tubs and all three have wood burning stoves. Both wigwams and cottages are open 12 months of the year. humblebeefarm.co.uk
Learn outdoor skills, Cornwall
Botelet Farm in Liskard, Cornwall has been looked after by the Tamblyn family for 150 years - the rural way of life hasn’t changed much – with cattle and sheep grazing the wild flower meadows and historic farming practices still going strong. Although the site of a Monoglian yurt or a few tents pitched on the rolling farmland can remind you which century you are in.
Natural mineral water is pumped from deep below the orchard, try the seasonal organic breakfast and why not relax with a therapeutic massage or a spot of reflexology. You can opt for a night in the organic B&B, relax in one of the beautiful historic self-catering cottages or stay a bit closer to nature in a yurt or tent. botelet.com

7 brilliant farm stays in the UK
By Madeleine Silver
Forget the creaking houses with rationed hot water or the overzealous sheepdog that might have scarred you from childhood – staying on a farm has never been so tempting. The farm-to-fork movement is only accelerating and at spaces across the UK you can jump straight to the source by booking a room and getting a peek of rural working life on a weekend break . The delight of diving into a breakfast of implausibly yellow eggs is perhaps only trumped if you collected them yourself; the same with oddly shaped beetroot ready to be roasted or a perfectly dirty potato. Stand by for a taste of The Good Life and greedy gulps of the fresh air.
Guardswell Farm, Perthshire
BEST FOR: FAMILIES
Wind back the clock for a taste of an enviably bucolic life at the 150-acre Guardswell Farm, which sits between the Perthshire villages of Abernyte and Kinnaird. After den building, tree climbing and feeding the sheep at the children’s outdoor day camp, lunch is served around a campfire. And for the grown-ups, there are no-dig organic-vegetable-growing workshops, the chance to build a birdhouse and flower-pressing masterclasses. In the farmhouse, which was gutted by the Lamotte and Wilson families when they took the helm in 2011, a red Aga takes centre stage amid stone floors, mismatched crockery and jugs overflowing with fresh flowers.
**Address:**Guardswell Farm, Kinnaird, Inchture, Perthshire PH149QZ Book your stay
River Cottage, Devon
BEST FOR: FOODIES
The Axe Valley stretches below the 17th-century longhouse at River Cottage HQ; chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s West Country sanctuary in Axminster. Inside are whitewashed walls, exposed beams, stacks of wood and no televisions; the idea is to tune into the rhythm of farming life instead. For a simple supper, order a sharing platter to the farmhouse, which might include carrot and split-pea houmous, caramelised onion, sage-and-cheddar arancini or ham-hock terrine. On the day-long River Cottage Experience, a tractor and trailer takes visitors to the farm to meet the animals and explore the vegetable patch before they tackle bread making and the art of home-cured bacon. End the day with a three-course supper made from foraged ingredients and washed down with a glass of elderflower or a local beer.

The Farm Camp, Wiltshire
BEST FOR: CAMPING
The cry of newborn lambs is likely to be your only distraction at this off-grid camp on a fifth-generation sheep farm outside Bath . After a hectic stint in Hong Kong and London , founder Tim Bowles returned home eager for a simpler life. The Farm Camp was born, with wood-burning stoves in the bell tents, campfires outside – and, crucially, hot showers and real beds. Try your hand at sheepherding or immerse yourself in a morning of den building, wood carving and mastering fire skills. And set off for the Hartley Farm Shop half a mile away to restock supplies or sneak yourself a doorstep-sized bacon sandwich.
Address: The Farm Camp, Church Farm, Winsley, Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire BA15 2JH Telephone: +44 1225 582246 Book your stay
Tillingham, East Sussex
BEST FOR: WINE BUFFS
After hand-planting 10,000 vines in 2018 on his farm in Peasmarsh near Rye , Ben Walgate was faced with two months of no rain. It was a taste of nature’s unpredictable plan, but today his biodynamic vineyard is riding high. Pick from Tillingham’s own bottles or its selection from producers around the world in the wine bar and shop, and head upstairs to the restaurant for supper. Produce from the farm and walled garden dictates the menu, which might include Jerusalem artichoke and wild-garlic pesto or rhubarb poached in Tillingham rosé. Book one of the 11 rooms in the former hop barn, with views across the original Victorian farmstead and the 70-acre rolling estate, plus the sea and Romney Marshes in the distance.
Address: Tillingham, Dew Farm, Dew Lane, Peasmarsh, East Sussex TN31 6XD Book your stay
Killiehuntly Farmhouse, Inverness-shire
BEST FOR: ADVENTURE
The dread of a damp Scottish steading, complete with tired tartan, will evaporate on arrival at Killiehuntly Farmhouse, where Danish tycoon Anders Holch Povlsen and his wife Anne have mastered Scandi-Scot style. Sheepskins are flung over chairs; white linen drapes hang from the sash windows; and floorboards are stripped back. After breakfast – eggs from the farm, poached fruit and black pudding, perhaps – venture outside for a skin-tingling swim in the River Tromie, watch the sheepdogs working on the hill or go stalking with the gamekeeper. Recharge in the sauna yurt before tucking into supper made by the in-house chef using organic vegetables from the garden.
Address: Killiehuntly Farmhouse, Killiehuntly, Kingussie, Inverness-shire PH21 1NZ Telephone: +44 1540 661619 Book your stay
Coombeshead Farm, Cornwall
BEST FOR: PRIVACY
A piglet was given to chef Tom Adams for his 16th birthday; by the time he was 22 his interest in pigs showed no sign of waning and he had co-founded the barbecue restaurant Pitt Cue in London; and five years later in 2016 he set off for east Cornwall to open Coombeshead Farm with chef April Bloomfield. With 66 acres of meadows and woodland at the place’s disposal, the aim is to be self-sufficient. The set supper menu includes Coombeshead’s own ham, preserved swede, crabapple and perhaps beeswax ice cream for pudding. And while social distancing is in place, the farmhouse is open for exclusive hire only, where squares of fudge and carafes of rhubarb gin await in the six pared-back bedrooms.

Kingshill Farmhouse, Kent
BEST FOR: WILDLIFE
During the winter months, tens of thousands of wildfowl can be seen soaring above Kingshill Farmhouse on the 3,300-acre Elmley National Nature Reserve. But there is also a year-round spectacle of wildlife for guests – from brown hares to dragonflies – as a result of Philip and Corinne Merricks’ commitment to conservation during their 40 years of farming the marsh. In 2013, their daughter Georgina and son-in-law Gareth Fulton joined them on the family estate to continue their vision. Take in the sweeping views of the reserve from the kitchen of the renovated 18th-century farmhouse, where cows dot the horizon, before soaking in a standalone bathtub while you try to fathom how you’re fewer than two hours from London.

After taking in the wealth of city sights, enjoy a touch of life on the farm. City farms offer an oasis of calm in an urban environment. Children are encouraged to say hello to pigs, cows and honking geese. The adults can enjoy an organic ice-cream while the kids are distracted. If domesticated animals are too tame there are always the zoos in England which provide a safe haven for some of the world's rarest beasts. Or experience the joy of having your car jumped on by inquisitive monkeys while on a tour in one of the safari parks in England. Attractions are preparing to reopen following the COVID-19 lockdown, please check with the attraction's website for up-to-date information on opening times and restrictions before travelling.

How to stay safe from infections carried by animals when visiting a farm
Visiting a farm is an enjoyable and educational experience for the whole family, but it carries a risk of infection from animals or the environment. Farm animals may carry germs that can be passed from animals to humans and cause illness, with symptoms including diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, nausea and body aches. In vulnerable groups, such as young children, pregnant women and elderly or immunocompromised people these infections can be particularly serious.
Infection can be picked up from the animal’s body, its poo or from areas where animals are kept or have recently been. If the germs are on your hands, you could accidentally pass them to your mouth and become infected. You can’t see the germs, so your hands may appear clean.
Washing your hands thoroughly with liquid soap and warm running water immediately after you have had contact with animals or the areas where they have been and at the end of your visit will reduce the risk of infection. Dry your hands; ideally, with paper towels. Hand gels or wipes are not a substitute for washing your hands after visiting a farm, due to the types of germs you might be exposed to. These germs may not cause animals to be visibly ill so it’s difficult to tell whether an animal is infected, especially when they look clean and healthy.
What to do when visiting a farm
Following the simple rules listed below will help to keep you and your children safe from infections that may be found on open or petting farms. Vulnerable groups need to take particular care as infections acquired from animals can be harmful to them: for pregnant women this also includes their unborn baby.
Things to do:
• Follow any rules and guidelines provided by the farm staff and maintain safe distances from animals to ensure your safety and the wellbeing of the animals • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm running water after you have touched animals, fences or other surfaces where animals may have been, and dry your hands with paper towels • Supervise children closely and ensure that they wash their hands thoroughly using liquid soap and warm running water • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating or drinking • When visiting a farm, only eat and drink in picnic areas or cafes • Try to avoid wearing open-toed shoes. At the end of your visit remove and clean boots or shoes and clean pushchair wheels. Then wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm running water • If you have held or had contact with an animal wash clothing at 40C or hotter when you return home.
Things to avoid:
• Touching your face or mouth while petting animals or walking around the farm • Kissing or putting your face close to farm animals eating or drinking while touching animals or walking around the farm; this includes avoiding eating sweets, crisps or chewing gum • Eating anything that has fallen on the floor • Using sanitising gels or wipes instead of washing hands with liquid soap and warm running water. Sanitising gels and wipes do not remove the type of bugs found on farms effectively
If you are planning a school or group visit to a farm, you also need to make sure that you’ve considered all the risks and taken steps to manage them. Guidance is available to help schools and teachers do this.
What should I do if I feel unwell after a farm visit?
If you or anyone in your group feels unwell or has any symptoms such as diarrhoea or vomiting within 2 weeks of visiting a farm, contact your GP or call NHS 111 as soon as possible. If you or anyone in your group - particularly if they fall into a vulnerable group - has bloody diarrhoea, seek immediate emergency medical attention.
Anyone who has experienced sickness or diarrhoea after visiting a farm could pass the illness on to others, so they should not attend work, school or nursery until they have been free of symptoms for at least 2 days. However, with infections from some bugs, extra tests may be needed to ensure they have fully recovered and will not pass on the infection to others before starting back at work, school or nursery. People who handle food, children under 5 years and those who work closely with people who may be vulnerable to infections should discuss with their GP or local health protection team before returning to work, school or nursery.
