Tour Pak Adjustment

On a 2012 Electra Glide Ultra Classic that I'm picking up this week how do you adjust the tour pak back to give my wife more room? If it is back all the way then what do you do?? Drill more holes or what! Thanks  

There are after-market kits to do that .  

There are kits ranging from around $100 to over $300 from Kuryakyn. The Kuryakyn is a sweet easily adjustable set-up but pricey. I used a couple of pieces of SS flat stock, 1/4" that I drilled to match the mounting holes of the frame the TP rests on. Then holes drilled further back to move the TP back. There are 2 sets of holes in the TP so two positions can be done just from that. You could probably get away with 3/16" stock. I used 1/4" becaused the tapered screw heads for flush mount are 0.161" depth and I thought too close to 0.1875" of 3/16" stock. Some friends said not really.  

...Continuing as fumble finger on smart phone sent begore complete... Were I to do again I would look at aluminum plate in 3/16". This would provide more base for the TP.  

So I assume you mounted the plate on top of the exciting plate. About what was the size 1/4 x 4? x full width not sure about the 4 inches. Thanks  

No, I am working from memory here, 2 bars around 11 l x 1.5 w x 1/4 t. I am out of town until 13 Oct. But I can shoot a pix then.  

Oh, and on my 09 I am talking stock mount not quick release. So the mount is frame. There is a center portion that is open. Side rails are continuous, cross rails are front and rear under TP. So my additional rails lift TP from cross rails and there is less support. That is why I am now thinking AL plate so continuous fro more support.

Tour Pack luggage rack mounting. (Easier that I expected.)

I got my luggage rack today for the Tour Pack and was disappointed that the mounting template was really only HALF of a mounting template. But I tossed it and found a much easier way to mount the darned thing. I first placed the rack on the tour pack lid in its approximate location and used bungee cords between it and the lower Tour Pack mounts to hold it down. I placed a few pieces of masking tape down on the lid to mark the location of the mounting feet. I removed the rack, applied masking tape to the lid so that the mounting feet would cover the taped areas, then put it back on with the bungee cords holding it down again. After measuring in every direction and being certain that I had it centered and straight I used a ball point pen and traced each foot outline on the masking tape. I removed the rack again and drilled 1/4" holes in the center of each circle. I then removed the tape and mounted the rack with the mounting hardware. I didn't have to elongate any holes and it turned out perfectly. I post this only because I have read horror stories here from folks who have struggled to get these darned things mounted straight. Someone out there might have a better way yet, but this worked out quick and easy for me. Maybe it will work for you.  

I had a rack mounted while I was on vacation. Initially I didn't want the rack because I like the cleaner look of the Street Glide. However after 350 miles from home and constant digging around in my tour pack and saddles bags because the wife has to change fricken clothes every hour, I caved. Stopped by Wildcat HD in London, KY and had them install it for me. Normally I wouldn't even consider letting anyone touch my bike, let alone using a drill on it. But the tech did a good job and it looked like he too tossed the template and masked the lid up and carefully positioned it and marking it before drilling. Wife said I looked more nervous than when we had kids watching him do the install. The only thing I didn't like about the rack was the bolts they use to mount it. I had a lid liner that wouldn't stick anymore because the hex bolts and washers were too high. So when I got home I removed the rack and put masking tape on the back of the liner in the proximity of where the holes would be. Then I mounted the liner back up and took a pencil and traced through the holes. Then drilled 1/4 holes in the liner. I then feed through button head bolts into the liner backing and remounted it in the lid. I used silicon seal to reseal the holes in the lid to keep water out, and then mounted the rack. I did install new double-sided tape around the perimeter of the lid. Now the liner won't fall down and the button head screws won't scratch anything I put in the lid organizer.

I was lucky to have already had the spoiler mounted. It helped with the measurements. I think I'd be afraid to mount the rack BEFORE mounting the spoiler. I ended up leaving only about 5mm between the racks outermost rear uprights and the leading edges of the spoiler.  

Tip: 1- Take the lid off and put it on the workbench..Easier to handle and it's level. 2- Can the template- It sucks 3- Blue painters tape, sharp pencil, accurate ruler or tape measure. 4- Align, walk back, look, mark, measure one last time, look one last time, drill. 5- Don't hesitate...Mark and cut. It's like pulling off a band-aid, it only hurts for a second if you go fast.

Anyone who likes to travel on their Harley Davidson Touring Motorcycle, either already has a Tour Pack or is seriously thinking about getting one. Once it’s installed, it’s not going to fold or crinkle or leave ugly gaps. It’s perfect. No Glue There’s no glue to deal with. Advanblack’s liners attach and stay in place with Velcro. The liners come with a 10’ spool of Velcro tape. You cut the Velcro into strips, stick them onto the interior cavities of your Tour Pack’s bottom and top, and the Velcro hooks onto the soft fabric of the backside of your liners. Easy to Clean Guess what? Because there’s no glue, these liners are easier to remove and clean. Most of the time you’ll probably just wipe the liners down to keep them looking good, but occasionally they need a good wash and being able to just pull them from the Velcro strips will make your life a lot easier. This is especially handy if something spills. Just pull the liner out with all the mess and get it cleaned up. And if you need to put in more Velcro, it’s easy to reinstall. These liners are safe to throw in the washer, but it’s a good idea to air dry them. When they’re ready to reinstall, just pop them in the dryer again, like when you first got them. No Black Bottom These liners don’t have a false bottom like some liners on the market. The stitching completely covers every part of the liner. Cinch to Install These liners are really easy to install, thanks to the exact fit and Velcro. How do I install Advanblack Tour Pack Liners? The Tour Pack liners come as a pair – one goes in the lid and one goes in the bottom. You also get 10’ of self-adhesive Velcro tape. That’s all you need. If you’re buying a new Tour Pack at the same time as the liners, we recommend installing the liners as the last step before installing the Tour Pack to your bike. The liners come folded up in a box, so the first thing you want to do is get all the folds out. Lay the liners out in the sun for a couple of hours or put them in the dryer on low heat for 5-10 minutes. This loosens them up and makes them much more flexible and easier to push down into the Tour Pack cavities. While the liners are loosening up, cut the Velcro into strips. You don’t have to go crazy with Velcro everywhere, and the bottom won’t need as many strips as the top, thanks to gravity and the weight of whatever you’ve got stowed. All you need for the bottom are some strips around the rim and then three or four strips in the middle on the mounting plate. Here’s a tip… the self-adhesive side of the Velcro tape is VERY sticky. It’s a good idea to plan out where you want to put the strips. And don’t skip cutting it into short 10” to 12” strips. If you try and run one long piece of tape along the outside rim of the Tour Pack sections, you’re likely going to mess up and have to spend time pulling off the tape and redoing it. Plan and cut. Before you start putting in the Velcro strips, you’ll want to remove the retractable tether. There’s a bracket on the bottom section of the Tour Pack. Remove two screws to take off this bracket. There’s a retractable tether assembly that is mounted to the top lid of the Tour Pack. Do not remove this; the liner has a hole cut for this. Once you have the strips in place, work the liner into the top section of the Tour Pack and stretch the liner around the retractable tether assembly. This takes a little bit of time, but just work into place slowly. You may have to pull it up from the Velcro a couple of times, but you’ll get it. Then, get the bottom liner into place. The last thing to do is reinstall the tether bracket to the bottom section and then re-attach the tether line from the top section to the bottom section bracket.
