MONTREAL (AP) — Jessica Pegula routed Liudmila Samsonova 6-1, 6-0 on Sunday to win the National Bank Open for her third career WTA Tour victory.

“We’re out on tour to win tournaments and to win titles every single week, but tennis can be really tough where you sometimes lose a lot,” said Pegula, the 29-year-old American seeded fourth.

“Even when you’re winning a lot of matches, you’re still not winning tournaments, so it can get tough. Winning a week like this week makes it all worth it and makes you want to keep going for more.”

She topped Samsonova in 49 minutes after the 15th-seeded Russian beat third-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 earlier Sunday in a rain-delayed semifinal.

“I know, obviously, physically she wasn’t feeling her best, but at the same time I played a really clean match,” Pegula said. “I don’t really think I made any unforced errors or anything. I played kind of a perfect match.”

Samsonova had 2 hours, 15 minutes between matches.

“Honestly, I would love to have more time,” Samsonova said. “But they said that it’s not possible, so it’s OK. I didn’t have time to regenerate because I was in the physio room trying to tape all my body, and it takes one hour for this.”

Pegula is the first American to win the event since Serena Williams in 2013. She beat doubles partner Coco Gauff on Friday in the quarterfinals, then knocked off top-ranked Iga Swiatek 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4 on Saturday in the semifinals.

“Beating Coco and beating Iga were two really tough wins back-to-back,” Pegula said. “And being able to do that and then just come out today and play a really clean match was kind of great. I felt like I didn’t have a ton of pressure at any point or I wasn’t worried too much today.”

Pegula also won tour titles in 2019 in Washington and 2022 in Guadalajara. Her parents own the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and NHL’s Buffalo Sabres.

Jessica Pegula Is Peaking Just in Time for the WTA Finals

After winning her second career singles title a week ago, the American player with world-class timing on the court has found herself the world No. 3.

jessica pegula wta tour

By Christopher Clarey

The tennis partnership between Jessica Pegula and David Witt got off to a roaring start. Only a few days after their first practice session, Pegula arrived in Washington, D.C., for the Citi Open with Witt, her new coach, and went on to win her first WTA singles title.

That was in 2019, when Pegula was ranked No. 79 and still learning to trust her body and talent after major knee and hip injuries.

“In the beginning, it was more me pounding it into her head that she’s really good,” Witt said. “And that she can beat these people and that there’s nobody better and whether they are top 10 or 20, it doesn’t matter.”

Three years later, Pegula is a genuine member of the tennis elite: at No. 3 in the world in singles a week after winning her second career singles title in Guadalajara, Mexico, and beating four former Grand Slam singles champions along the way.

The top-ranked American, Pegula is one of the headliners of the WTA Finals — the year-end championships of the women’s tour, reserved for the top eight players — beginning Monday in Fort Worth. It will be her first appearance in the exclusive event, and that has extra resonance for Pegula because it comes at the relatively advanced tennis age of 28.

“Of course, I would have liked success younger, but I don’t know if it would have panned out the same,” she said in a recent interview. “I don’t think it would have. So, I’m particularly appreciative of it now. If I didn’t go through all the stuff I went through, I don’t think I would have developed the kind of strength that I think I used to help me do well now.”

Pegula comes from an overachieving family. Her parents are Terry and Kim Pegula , the billionaire owners of the N.F.L.’s Buffalo Bills and N.H.L.’s Buffalo Sabres. Terry Pegula made a fortune in natural gas and real estate and married Kim, who was born in South Korea but abandoned by her biological parents and later adopted at age 5 by a family in the United States.

“I think my mom was left on police station steps,” Jessica Pegula said. “It’s a crazy story. It could be like a movie.”

Kim has been facing significant health issues since the summer, which the Pegulas have acknowledged publicly without providing details. Jessica, tearing up, dedicated her victory in Guadalajara to her mother.

“My mom always kind of joked I was the first sports team as far as helping me with my tennis career growing up,” Pegula told reporters in Guadalajara . “I definitely wanted to dedicate it to her. She’s had a really tough year. I know she was watching.”

Pegula plans on giving her mother plenty more tennis to watch in the next two weeks. After the WTA Finals, she will travel to Glasgow to lead the United States in the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup team event.

It will be a grueling finish to a busy season, one that No. 1 Iga Swiatek will not attempt. Swiatek declined to play in the King Cup finals for Poland, explaining that the tight, intercontinental turnaround put her at risk of an injury.

Pegula agrees that the scheduling is far from ideal. She wants the team experience she missed last year when she had to withdraw from the King Cup finals; she tested positive for the coronavirus shortly after her wedding to Taylor Gahagen in October and had to spend what she called “a Covid honeymoon” at home in Boca Raton, Fla.

“I definitely want to go,” she said of Glasgow. “I think it’s a good problem to have if I’m in the finals of both. So, it’ll be a tough turnaround, but it’s a tough two weeks and then I’m done. It’s like a reward.”

Pegula’s best season has been about juggling it all: newfound success, newlywed life, her skin-care business and a spot on the WTA player council in the midst of a politically and financially fraught time for the tour .

She is eager to develop skills that could translate into a role with her family’s sports franchises after her tennis career is finished. She said she has learned to feel at home outside her comfort zone.

“Player council, I was really nervous,” she said. “I didn’t know if I knew enough, but I felt that if I was afraid to do it, then I should probably do it. I like to put myself out there and learn through different experiences. At one point, I’m probably going to have to say no, but I like saying yes, and my mom always told me to say yes and to do a lot of things and put yourself in different situations too.”

Her agenda will be packed again this week. Pegula has qualified in singles and in doubles with Coco Gauff , her 18-year-old compatriot. Pegula and Gauff, who is ranked No. 4 in singles, are the only competitors playing both events in Fort Worth.

Pegula and Gauff each extol the benefits of playing both events regularly on tour for fine-tuning their games and lifting some of the pressure from the singles result. They have teamed up to win three doubles titles in 2022, also reaching the French Open final.

Asked for one word that summed up her partner, Gauff thought for a while before settling on “resilient.”

That rings true despite Pegula’s privileged upbringing, which alleviated concerns about the training and traveling costs that pose obstacles for many other tennis talents.

“It doesn’t matter how much money you have,” Witt said. “It’s something inside that drives you to want to win. A lot of people probably say, she doesn’t have to play tennis, but what would somebody do to satisfy that competitiveness if they didn’t play a sport or challenge themselves with something? I’m sure there’s a lot of people out there that would have never thought in a million years that Jessica would be top 10 or top five. But they don’t know her as a person. They don’t know how hard she works.”

Witt, a 6-foot-3 former touring pro from Florida who had a huge serve and forehand, struggled to duplicate his junior success on the main circuit. But he has now proved himself twice as a top-drawer coach, working with Venus Williams, first as a hitting partner and then as a coach, for 11 years before they split at the end of the 2018 season.

Pegula and Witt clicked from the start; they have become regular golfing partners and often travel without any other support team members.

“Dave’s very calm, laid back a little bit, but at the same time super competitive,” Pegula said. “He’s a good fit for me because I’m kind of similar. Not a lot of things get me fired up or revved up, but I’m also very competitive. A lot of times growing up, I didn’t really know how to balance that. It was like, ‘You need to show more emotion.’ But that’s not me.”

Pegula is not an explosive, acrobatic mover like Gauff or Swiatek; she’s not a flashy shotmaker like No. 2 Ons Jabeur. But Pegula is a clean hitter with world-class timing and plenty of pop in her groundstrokes and improved serve. Unlike some baseline bashers, she also has a Plan B and C and is ever more comfortable at net. In Witt’s view, her even-keel approach (with the exception of the occasional thrown racket) allows her to channel her energy effectively during matches.

Her progress with Witt has been steady and increasingly heady. She was ranked No. 62 at the end of 2020 and No. 18 at the end of 2021 after reaching her first major quarterfinal that year at the Australian Open. She is now within range of the No. 2 ranking after reaching three more Grand Slam quarterfinals in 2022, losing to the eventual champion in all three — including another loss to Swiatek at the U.S. Open in September, after which she sipped a beer in a downbeat post-match news conference.

Pegula now expects more. The thought of winning a major singles title still makes her uncomfortable, but that seems all the more reason to increase the pace of the chase. Stagnation, as Novak Djokovic once said, is regression.

“Exactly,” Pegula said. “That’s perfect.”

Jessica Pegula rejoins WTA tour in San Diego with two new coaches

By wendi oliveros | feb 27, 2024.

Jessica Pegula is having a busy 2024, but much of the activity has been off the tennis court. An early exit from the Australian Open, an injury timeout , a coaching split, and a milestone birthday have been on her radar.

The newly minted 30-year-old is healthy and back on the court in San Diego playing singles and doubles this week. Her usual partner, Coco Gauff, is not in the San Diego draw so she is playing doubles with American Desirae Krawczyk.

Happy Birthday Jessica Pegula pic.twitter.com/VDOrFfyXiC — ken mckinnon (@kenmckinnon13) February 25, 2024

This is her first tournament since splitting with David Witt . Many fans are curious about who is on her team. She has employed two former tennis players with the first name of Mark.

Who are the new additions to Pegula's team?

Both Marks are 50-something native Bahamians. Mark Merklein was an accomplished college player and assistant coach at the University of Florida. Mark Knowles previously coached Mardy Fish, Jack Sock, and Milos Raonic. Knowles, a former World No. 1 in doubles, has 56 career doubles titles, mixed doubles titles, and four Grand Slams. Knowles is also a contributor/analyst on the Tennis Channel.

It is unclear if Pegula is working with Merklein and Knowles on a trial basis through the spring or if this is the beginning of a longer-term relationship. Her time with Witt was the most successful of her career; however, she has her eyes focused on the Grand Slams and the Olympics, presumably believing she needed new voices and strategies to achieve success in these high-profile events.

With her frequent doubles partner Coco Gauff winning her maiden Grand Slam in 2023, it would be great if Pegula got hers in 2024, and if the pair could win a doubles Grand Slam or Olympic medal together. The women's game is loaded with talent so Pegula's timeline to win is now.

Jessica Pegula has released an update on her injury status – and it isn’t good news for fans of the world No. 5. She is battling back from injury, and has pulled out of the Masters event in Rome this week, admitting that as a result, her participation in the second Grand Slam of the season in Paris is in serious doubt. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are also doubts for Roland-Garros.

Three wta players withdraw from italian open.

Jessica Pegula in action at the 2023 Australian Open.

The final clay-court Masters 1000 event of the season will begin at the Italian Open on Wednesday. Unsurprisingly, there is a superb WTA entry list for the tournament, with French Open champion Iga Swiatek and Australian Open winner Aryna Sabalenka among those set to feature. However, three players have elected to withdraw from the Italian Open. This article names those who have withdrawn and lists their four replacements in the draw.

Three Players Withdraw From The Italian Open

Which players have withdrawn.

Jessica Pegula was the first player to withdraw from the Italian Open. The American No. 2 also did not play at the Madrid Open , with Pegula announcing she had gotten hurt the week before the tournament began. No further details about her injury have been provided. Hopefully, I will be fit and ready for the French Open in a few weeks.

Karolina Pliskova was the second player to withdraw from the Italian Open. The two-time Grand Slam runner could not  compete in Madrid due to a knee injury . She was hopeful at that stage of being ready to play at the event in Rome. Unfortunately, the Czech needs some additional recovery time.

Karolina Muchova was the final player to withdraw from the Italian Open. Last year’s French Open runner-up has not played all season due to a wrist injury, which also kept her out of the 2023 WTA Finals. Muchova had surgery on this issue in February . Although no estimated date has been provided for her return, it will likely be some time before fans can watch her fluid stroke again.

Who Replaces Those Three Players In The Draw?

Wang Yafan benefits from Pegula’s decision to withdraw from the Italian Open. She is yet to find much success on clay, having not won a Grand Slam or WTA 1000 level match during her career on the dirt. The 30-year-old now has a chance to change that statistic in Rome.

Mayar Sherif replaces Pliskova at the event. The clay-court specialist missed much of the season so far through injury, but she has found some form recently. Sherif defeated Australian Open quarterfinalist Marta Kostyuk in Madrid before reaching the final at a WTA 125 tournament in Lleida. That could make the Egyptian a dangerous opponent to draw.

Finally, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova is set to play at the Italian pen because Muchova has to withdraw. She has won two clay-court matches this season and came close to beating Ons Jabeur in Madrid.

WTA Italian Open draw: Aryna Sabalenka gets tough path as Iga Swiatek avoids biggest threats

Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka pose

Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina have landed in a tough-looking bottom half of the 2024 Italian Open draw, while Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff are both in the top half.

Sabalenka and Rybakina are on the same side of the draw for the second consecutive WTA 1000 clay-court event, after the pair faced off in the semi-finals at the Madrid Open last week. The Belarusian prevailed 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) in a pulsating encounter.

Swiatek, Sabalenka and Rybakina have been the leading trio in women’s tennis so far this year, with the form of world No 3 and US Open champion Gauff not quite reaching the same heights.

Rybakina, who is the No 4 seed in Rome, is the defending champion, having overcome Anhelina Kalinina in the 2023 Italian Open final.

Jessica Pegula, the world No 5, and Karolina Muchova, the world No 14 who has not played since the US Open in September, have both withdrawn due to injury.

The 32 seeded players will all receive a first round bye in the 96-player draw, while the 12 qualifiers will be known after the qualifying draw concludes.

Sabalenka, the second seed, will face either Wang Yafan or a qualifier in her opening match, before a possible third round encounter with 32nd seed Dayana Yastremska.

The two-time Australian Open winner could then play either No 16 seed Elina Svitolina or No 23 seed Anna Kalinskaya in the fourth round.

In the quarter-finals, Sabalenka would potentially take on either Ons Jabeur or Jelena Ostapenko — the eighth and ninth seeds respectively.

Sabalenka and Rybakina could meet in a semi-final showdown in a rematch of their Madrid clash, while the winner could meet Swiatek or Gauff in the final.

Swiatek, a two-time Italian champion, will begin her campaign against either Caroline Dolehide or a qualifier, before facing a potential third round matchup with Sloane Stephens or Yulia Putintseva.

The four-time Major winner and world No 1 could then take on Ekaterina Alexandrova (14) or Veronika Kudermetova (17) in the last 16.

Marketa Voundrousova (6), Beatriz Haddad Maia (12) and Madison Keys (18) are among possible last eight opponents for the 22-year-old Pole.

In the semi-finals, Swiatek might take on No 3 seed Gauff, with Qinwen Zheng (7), Daria Kasatkina (10) and Liudmila Samsonova other potential last four adversaries.

Play in the main draw in Rome will begin on May 7, with the women’s final to be held on May 18.
