From Pink Sand Beaches to Military Forts, Here are Ideas for How to Spend Your Day in Port in Bermuda

Insider's Guide for the Best Things to Do in Bermuda Cruise Port - with a view of cruise ships and Bermuda's port.

Bermuda is a tropical cruise destination in the Atlantic Ocean, but don’t confuse it with the Caribbean. Bermuda is located right in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, due east of North Carolina. This location gives Bermuda its own unique island aesthetic and climate, as well as making it easy to cruise to from the United States.

Bermuda is much more than just a beach island destination. For cruisers spending a day in port, you’ll want to combine the beaches with some of Bermuda’s other top sights. I’ve made it easy for you by compiling the top things to do in Bermuda during your cruise.

King’s Wharf and Royal Naval Dockyard: A Bermuda Must-See for Cruisers

King's Wharf in Bermuda

The first thing you should familiarize yourself with when cruising to Bermuda is King’s Wharf, which is the port city for cruisers, though ships actually pull into the historic Royal Naval Dockyard. This means that as long as you get off the cruise ship, you literally can’t miss this top site in Bermuda!

While walking through Royal Naval Dockyard, you’ll see that it is much more than just a cruise port. There are shops, restaurants, and even museums showcasing the maritime history of the dockyard, which was once an outpost for the British Royal Navy.

Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda

The must-see Bermuda museum for many visitors is the National Museum of Bermuda, located in the Royal Naval Dockyard, since it teaches you more about the history of the island.

Another top thing to see in the King’s Wharf area is the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo. While there, make sure you view the Rock Marine Exhibit, which is one of world’s most impressive living coral displays and contains 140,000 gallons of water.

Head to Hamilton for History

Hamilton, a historic and colorful town in Bermuda

Hamilton is home to Fort Hamilton, a former military fort that has impressive old cannons and ramparts along with a cool moat garden to walk around.

If you want another fun way to learn about the underwater world surrounding Bermuda, head to the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) in Hamilton, Bermuda’s capital city. It’s great for both kids and adults thanks to hands-on experiences in its Ocean Discovery Centre, including a fun virtual reality experience that will make you feel like you’re diving along the deep ocean floor.

Kids will also love the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s Blue Train, which is a colorful train on wheels that departs from BUEI (or the Hamilton Ferry dock) and takes you around Hamilton with an expert tour guide who will teach you all about Hamilton’s history while pointing out its main sights.

UNESCO Wonder in St. George’s

Historic buildings in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of St. George's, a great place to visit on a trip or cruise port of call in Bermuda.

Along with King’s Wharf and Hamilton, the other must-see Bermuda town is St. George’s, which doubles as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

St. George’s is located on Bermuda’s East End and is both charming and historic. St. George’s has excellently preserved British colonial architecture, much of which has gleaming white exteriors. Be sure to look down while walking through the town since St. George’s has brick streets that are hundreds of years old.

The other historic site you must see while touring St. George’s is Fort St. Catherine, which is Bermuda’s largest fort. From Fort St. Catherine, you can see Bermuda’s sprawling coastline and pink sand beaches (yes, pink — more on that below). The fort dates back to the 17 th century and has ramparts and tunnels you can explore. Fort St. Catherine also houses a museum where you can see more of the artifacts from the fort’s military days, such as artillery and uniforms.

Bermuda’s Iconic Pink Sand Beaches

Horseshoe Bay Beach in Bermuda. Horseshoe Bay Beach is one of the pink sand beaches of Bermuda, a must-see site when cruising to Bermuda's cruise port.

You may have heard that there are pink sand beaches in the world, but not realized they were so easy to get to. That’s right, Bermuda – located just roughly 180 miles from the U.S. mainland – has those uniquely hued beaches and you definitely don’t want to miss seeing a pink sand beach when you have a cruise port of call in Bermuda.

The pink sand beaches of Bermuda are caused by tiny red organisms that live within the coral reef located in the seawater around the island of Bermuda. When those organisms die, they get washed up onto shore and mix with the sand, giving the sandy shoreline its beautiful shade of pink.

In particular, Horseshoe Bay Beach in Hamilton is a popular pink sand beach to visit and is a must-see Bermuda sight for many travelers.

Get into Nature on Bermuda’s Railway Trail

Railway Trail in Bermuda, one of the best things to do there to get out into nature.

Railway Trail is a massive hiking and biking trail that runs along what used to be a railroad on the island. The railroad was built in the 1930s to make it easier for residents and visitors of Bermuda to get around since cars weren’t permitted on the island at the time.

Eventually, the government decided it was too expensive to upkeep and closed it down in 1948. But this was a good decision for nature and cycling lovers since it was turned into a National Park and it is now the lovely Railway Trail that goes through forests and along the sea.

The Railways Trail covers 18 miles and extends nearly the entire length of Bermuda. If you’re visiting Bermuda on a cruise, you won’t have time to hike the whole thing, but you’ll be able to hike some of it if you so desire since access points are located all over the island.

Crystal Cave

Crystal Cave in Bermuda

Water isn’t the only surface you can explore in low depths while in Bermuda. Descend underneath the ground while in Bermuda to see the Crystal Cave, an incredible cave that is home to an underground lake and a multitude of stalactites hanging from the ceiling of Crystal Cave.

Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve

Cooper's Island in Bermuda

Located on the East End near St. George’s, Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve is a must-see Bermuda site for visitors who enjoy peaceful walks along tree-lined trails and sandy beaches with lots of opportunities for sea bird watching. It also has an impressive lookout point for views of the island from the wildlife observation tower on its premises.

Enjoy Your Cruise to Bermuda!

Whether your idea of a memorable time in port is finding Instagram-worthy photo ops at the pink sand beaches, to learn more about the history of the island at one of its museums, or to simply just relax on a beach, you can do all that and more during your Bermuda cruise port of call.

3-Day Bermuda Cruise Itinerary

Getting ready for your Bermuda cruise? Here’s how to pack all the major highlights into three unforgettable days. With famous pink-sand beaches and a rich cultural heritage – a mix of British, African, Caribbean and Portuguese influences – this island is unlike any other.

  • Itineraries,
  • Local Hotspots

An aerial view of two large cruise ships in calm waters by a port.

With a reliable ferry service and fun activities for all the family packed into an accessible 21 square miles, it’s easy to see why Bermuda has attracted adventurers and sparked mystique for centuries. Follow this three-day cruise itinerary to get a taste of life out here.

CRUISE INTO DOCKYARD, GRAB LUNCH & EXPLORE THE SHORE

You’ve anchored in the  Royal Naval Dockyard , a former British Royal Navy stronghold rich in maritime history and already it’s not like any other island. The 19 th -century barracks that surround the port once kept guard over the West End, but now houses the  National Museum . An award-winning playground and  dolphin sanctuary  are pulls for the younger members of the family, but head straight to the Hall of History mural to get some quick perspective first. Local artist Graham Foster has colourfully chronicled Bermuda’s story on the two-story wall; take a few minutes to admire his awe-inspiring depiction of island life before diving into the main attractions.

The Commissioner's House sits on a rocky bluff with blue skies in the background

Explore the area by foot. Stop at must-sees like  The Arts Centre,  Dockyard Clayworks and Dockyard Glass to see local craftspeople at work. While you're here, get a  three-day bus and ferry pass  and start planning with a locally made scoop (or two) of  Alex & Pete’s Artisan Ice-Cream  in hand. It’s a 10-minute bus ride to lunch at local-favourite  Woody’s  to enjoy their famed fish sandwich dockside. After washing it down with a cold ginger beer, get back on the bus – look out for the pink stop – to head to the astonishing  South Shore Beaches.

It wouldn't be a proper Bermuda cruise itinerary without plenty of time to explore the island's breathtaking beaches. There are several stops to choose from:  Church Bay  is a snorkeller’s paradise thanks to a network of shallow reef close to shore.  Horseshoe Bay  is one of the world’s most photographed beaches and it’s easy to see why; the wide crescent of soft, pink sand and crystal-clear water makes a great starting point for exploring nearby coves and on-site rental concessions, Rum Bum Beach Bar and changing facilities provide everything you need for a great day at the beach. Further east,  Warwick Long Bay , known for having the pinkest sand, stretches for half a mile and is great for swimming. Elbow Beach gets its name from the curve of its shoreline and offers a long stretch of pristine sand. Whichever you choose, it’s impossible to go wrong.

Warwick Long Bay Beach in Bermuda

Hop on a bus back to  Dockyard  with enough time to freshen up in your cabin and grab a bite before booking a  Gosling’s Rum Tasting Cruise  with  Fantasea . The quintessential twilight Bermuda cruise, the itinerary begins with departure from Dockyard at 7.30 pm and is not only a way to learn the history of rum on the island – perhaps the island's best-known export – but a great way to better learn about Bermuda. Cruise along as captain, crew and Gosling’s ambassadors regale you with historical morsels and personal tales of the gorgeous homes you see along the way. At the end you’ll have an opportunity to purchase the rums duty free.

FERRY TO ST. GEORGE’S, SHOPPING, SNORKELLING & LIVE MUSIC

The second leg of your Bermuda cruise itinerary begins with a little island-hopping – and a cup of joe.

While one country, the island of Bermuda is actually a long ribbon of land made up of 181 islands that take on the shape of a fish hook. A fine way to see it is from the water and during cruise season, Bermuda's ferry runs from end to end. Take the early boat from  Dockyard  to  St. George's  to spend a day in the former capital and UNESCO world heritage site, a spot that begs for exploration.

St George's in Bermuda

Browse local shops such as the handmade  Salt Spray Soap Company , local literature and goods at  Long Story Short ,  The Island Shop  and the sweet scents of indigenous flora at  The Bermuda Perfumery  housed in photogenic Stewart Hall.

Grab island-style lunch from  Mama Angie’s , a mom-and-pop food stall by Somers Garden and take a stroll through the grounds. Legend has it that the heart of its namesake, the Admiral Sir George, is buried there.

Take a cab or minibus from  Kings Square  to  Fort St. Catherine , an impressive stronghold and museum overlooking  Achilles Bay . Settle there or beach it further down the coast at Tobacco Bay. The latter is a laid-back spot, made remarkable with its unique limestone rock formations and coral reef, popular with snorkellers. The terrace serves frozen cocktails and beach snacks to an island soundtrack. It’s an easy place to spend an hour or two.

Restaurant signs at Tobacco Bay in Bermuda

Catch the Orange Route ferry back to Dockyard in time for dinner onboard the ship and venture out again for live music at  Bone fish Bar and Grill  and then late-night venue  Snorkel Park .

PRE-DEPARTURE SHOPPING & LUNCH WITH A VIEW

With an afternoon departure, there’s plenty of time for a morning excursion, so stretch out the final hours of your Bermuda cruise itinerary accordingly. Take the 20-minute ferry to the  City of Hamilton , the island’s business centre and capital.

The loop around  Front Street  to  Queen Street  to  Reid Street  forms the main shopping route for your island souvenirs. Grab a coffee at  Rock Island  that's made from beans roasted in-house and freshly baked pastries before browsing the shops. Discover classic Bermuda style at  The English Sports Shop , vivid t-shirts at  Flying Colours , hand-painted ceramics and glassware at  The Island Shop  and a pink-sand charm from  Alexandra Mosher Studio’s flagship boutique .

A couple are standing in a store shopping.

Find a table on the terrace of the  Pickled Onion  for a quick lunch of  Bermuda Fish Chowder  served with a dash of black rum and sherry peppers while you look out on  Hamilton Harbour . To follow, order the Bermuda Rockfish tacos or the Dockyard Brewing Co. beer-battered fish and chips and wash it all down with the microbrewery’s local beers – the Somers Amber Ale is a popular English bitter style – or a traditional  Dark ‘n Stormy .

Catch the fast ferry back to Dockyard, your final on-island cruise before Bermuda calls again next year.

How to Spend a Long Weekend in Bermuda: 4 Days in Bermuda Itinerary

Bermuda Itinerary

Justin and I spent four wonderful days on the gorgeous island of Bermuda. To say that we fell in love with Bermuda is an understatement. From the sights to the people to the food, we had an incredible getaway. For those in the eastern parts of Canada and the USA, definitely put a weekend in Bermuda on your vacation radar. Located east of the South Carolina in the Atlantic Ocean, Bermuda is a quick flight , especially for those living in Toronto or New York City. A weekend in Bermuda will give you a great taste for the country, but extending your stay to 3 or 4 days is ideal.

Weekend in Bermuda: Our 4 day itinerary for Bermuda

Here’s our Bermuda 4 day itinerary, which you can condense into 2 or 3 days by choosing the highlights that interest you most. Justin and I visited Bermuda in October, although you can use this itinerary for many months throughout the year. April through October is the best time of year to visit Bermuda. Once you reach the winter months, it does tend to get a little cooler there. However, this can mean less crowds and cheaper prices. I thought that Bermuda in October was a great mix of both: the weather wasn’t as hot as in the summer, but there were less crowds and we could still enjoy the beach.

Bermuda Itinerary Day 1: Arriving and Exploring

We flew in to Bermuda with Air Canada from Toronto Pearson Airport. From there, we took an airport taxi to our hotel, the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club . Justin and I were pretty tired from waking up so early for the flight. We primarily spent this first day relaxing by the pool and exploring our immediate surroundings. Plus, we ate food. Eating is important!

Where to Stay: Hamilton Princess & Beach Club

Where to Stay: Hamilton Princess & Beach Club Bermuda

One of the best places to stay in Bermuda is the luxurious Hamilton Princess and Beach Club in Hamilton, Bermuda. It’s formerly known as the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, though it’s still currently managed by Fairmont Hotels. We absolutely adored staying at this five star property. The staff go above and beyond, there are fantastic restaurants on site, and the infinity pool is simply fabulous. Every suite has a beautiful balcony with spectacular views.

If hotel location is important to you, consider staying at the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club. It’s located along the Hamilton Harbor, meaning that you can easily walk into the downtown area of Hamilton with many shops and restaurants. You can also easily take public transportation from Hamilton all over the island.

Book your stay at the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club with free cancellation and no prepayment necessary. Check out more reviews by fellow travelers who have experienced this hotel.

Stop for Lunch at Cafe Eden at ABC Natural Foods

Cafe Eden at ABC Natural Foods - Vegan in Bermuda

Cafe Eden is a smoothie bar and cafe nestled inside a small health food store called ABC Natural Foods . They serve breakfast and lunch, and conveniently update their menu daily on their Facebook page. We ate veggie burgers and tasted some of the most delicious tropical fruit smoothies.

It is an all-vegetarian cafe so if you’re vegan, vegetarian, or love healthy foods, this is the place for you. ABC Natural Foods has lots of prepared vegan meals and snacks, ideal for residents and visitors alike. If your accommodation has a kitchenette or cooking space, stock up on delicious ingredients and meals from ABC Natural Foods. You can discover all of the vegan and vegetarian options in Bermuda at our Vegan Guide to Be rmuda .

What to See in Bermuda: Front Street in Hamilton

What to see in Bermuda - Front Street in Hamilton

After settling in to your hotel, venture out to explore the city of Hamilton, Bermuda. Front Street is the place to be. It’s the main road in Hamilton that runs right along the harbor. There are many brightly colored buildings, boutiques, and restaurants on Front Street. A weekend in Bermuda would not be complete if you didn’t spend at least a small amount of time wandering around Front Street and Hamilton, by day or night. Check out more details and photos of Front Street here.

Dinner at 1609 Restaurant and Bar

1609 Restaurant and Bar in Bermuda - What to eat in Bermuda

The 1609 Restaurant is right on site at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club Hotel. It’s a convenient and delicious choice for anyone staying at the hotel. Of course, visitors from outside the hotel are welcome to dine there, too. Smart casual attire is recommended, and I also suggest that you call the hotel for dining reservations.

Back when we visited, it was easy to enjoy a yummy vegan meal that was specially prepared for us by the chef. Back in 2014, we had to mostly request vegan meals, which was absolutely no problem. The chef can cater to any dietary restrictions. However, upon viewing their current menu, there are several vegetarian and vegan offerings. There are vegan tacos, Beyond Burgers, and even a Beyond Meat kebab.

It’s refreshing to see that half of the menu is vegan or vegetarian. 1609 ranks as one of the top hotel restaurants in Bermuda by Fodor’s Travel. Definitely dine at 1609 Restaurant if you have the opportunity during your weekend in Bermuda.

Weekend in Bermuda Day 2: Island Eco-Tour

Weekend in Bermuda - Island eco-tour exploring caves, beaches, and more

We embarked on a full day tour of Bermuda with Ashley of Hidden Gems Bermuda. It’s an island tour exploring the lesser known gems of the country, and we can’t say enough good things about our experience. Ashley has lived in Bermuda for her entire life and knows all of the best spots. She took us around to places we wouldn’t have known about on our own.

It’s an all-inclusive, fully interactive, island eco-tour that’s kind to the environment and supports local businesses. Some of the places we visited:  Tom Moore’s Jungle, the Blue Lagoon, Subway Cave, Walsingham Cave, the Black Horse Tavern for lunch, St. David’s Lighthouse, Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve, Long Beach, and Admiralty House Park.

3 days in Bermuda - Admiralty House Park for cliff jumping and caves

If you don’t want to invest an entire day in a tour and you’re looking for other things to do in Bermuda, here are some great tour ideas for you that are a few hours in length:

  • Bermuda Catamaran Experience : A half day tour with sailing, swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, kayaking, and the famous Bermuda drink, Rum Swizzles!
  • Half Day Sightseeing Tour of Bermuda : Stops at pink sand beaches and the dockyard with historical facts from your guide
  • Kayaking Eco-Tour : A 3.5 hour kayaking tour around Bermuda’s pristine coastline with a break on a secluded beach
  • City Tour of St. George : A guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site with trips to historical landmarks
  • Bermuda Sunset Cocktail Cruise : Embark on a 90 minute sunset cruise aboard a 50 foot catamaran with Rum Swizzles and tropical juice

Dinner at Marcus (Hamilton Princess & Beach Club)

When we dined at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, we went to Intermission Restaurant inside the hotel. Nowadays, Marcus is open (by world class chef, Marcus Samuelsson) so we recommend that you dine there. While the menu is always changing, the vegan options on the menu include a BBQ Butternut Squash Bowl, the Beyond Burger, and a few salad options.

Bermuda Itinerary Day 3: Take a Beach Day

Horseshoe Bay Beach in Bermuda - Best beaches in Bermuda - pink sand beaches

You can’t visit a place like Bermuda without enjoying the beaches. While in Bermuda, we tried a brand new sport for us…surfing! We had so much fun surfing in Bermuda, that we’ve since tried it in a few other countries around the world, too. If surfing isn’t your thing, you can try stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, jet skiing, or snorkeling. There are so many water activities to try in Bermuda. There’s always the option of simply relaxing on the beach and enjoying the sunshine. Visit one of the numerous beaches in Bermuda .

Lunch at the Jasmine Lounge (Fairmont Southampton)

Jasmine Lounge at Fairmont Southampton in Bermuda

We enjoyed a light lunch at the Jasmine Lounge inside the Fairmont Southampton Hotel . From the Hamilton Princess , we took a complimentary ferry ride across to the Fairmont Southampton right near Horseshoe Bay Beach. Then after lunch, we took a complimentary shuttle from the hotel to the beach. The restaurants at the Fairmont hotels are some of the best places to eat in Bermuda for fine dining.

Surfing with Isolated Surfboards at Horseshoe Bay Beach

bermuda cruise reddit

Justin and I had a total blast going surfing in Bermuda . Our instructor was with the local company, Isolated Surfboards . We met up at Horseshoe Bay Beach, which is one of the most beautiful beaches that I’ve ever seen. It was the perfect place to try surfing for the first time as there were varying sizes of waves crashing to shore. If you’re looking for a different water sport to try during your weekend in Bermuda, give surfing a shot. Though I did plenty of falling on my face, it was a lot of fun to try a new sport. Justin ended up being quite good at it!

Snacks at the Frog & Onion Pub (Royal Naval Dockyard)

We worked up quite the appetite after surfing and had lunch at the Frog & Onion Pub after a taxi ride to the Royal Naval Dockyard. The veggie burgers, fries, and onion rings really hit the spot. Take a stroll around the Royal Naval Dockyard while you’re there, too.

Bermuda Fun Golf

Bermuda Fun Golf - Mini Golf - Weekend in Bermuda

Our main reason for visiting the Royal Naval Dockyard area was to play mini putt at Bermuda Fun Golf . It’s one of the greatest mini golf courses we’d ever experienced. The holes were modeled after professional golf course holes. It takes the idea of mini putt to the next level. If you’re into fun and games (who isn’t?), be sure to add Bermuda Fun Golf to your Bermuda itinerary plans.

Dinner at The Terrace on Front Street

When we visited Bermuda, we dined at Red Steakhouse and Bar. It was quite funny that two vegans ended up dining at a steakhouse, but the chef prepared such delicious meals for us. As it turns out, Red Steakhouse no longer exists and the owner has transformed the establishment into a spot called The Terrace .

I checked out their menu and they’ve got a few vegan offerings: Jay’s Curry (veggies and chickpeas with a coconut curry sauce), vegetable risotto, beet salad, garden salad, and pizza. The vegan items are clearly marked on the menu.

Bermuda Weekend Trip Day 4: Crystal Caves, Scooters, and More

Public transportation in Bermuda - Weekend in Bermuda

Alright, so you might decide to spend 3 days in Bermuda, but I hope you’re able to extend your stay to a fourth day. We ended up leaving on the fourth day, but our flight was later at night. That way, we were able to explore the island for one more day before traveling back home. Whether you’re using this blog post to plan your Bermuda 3 day itinerary, a long weekend in Bermuda, or four full days of fun, I’m sure you can take advantage of these following activities, too.

If it isn’t windy or raining outside and you’re comfortable with riding a scooter, I highly recommend that you rent one and ride it around the island. Tourists aren’t able to rent cars, but you can easily get around with a scooter and a map. If you aren’t comfortable with renting one and don’t want to spend a small fortune on taxis, there are many public transportation options in Bermuda that are easy to use.

Crystal Caves

Crystal Cave and Fantasy Cave in Bermuda - What to see in Bermuda

It’s possible to reach the Crystal Caves easily by public bus. The public transportation system in Bermuda is excellent. You can also travel there by scooter, if you wish. At Crystal Caves, there are actually two caves at this site: the Crystal Cave and the Fantasy Cave. It’s possible to buy tickets to either caves right on site when you arrive without any reservations. However, if you like to plan in advance, you can book a tour to Crystal Cave and Fantasy Cave that comes with transportation (a great option of if you’re visiting Bermuda from a cruise ship).

Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to visit both caves, but you should check them both out if you get the chance. It’s one of the best Bermuda attractions and it’s one of the best caves I’ve ever seen. Definitely check out Crystal Caves if you love taking a peek underground to witness magical scenery.

Renting Scooters in Bermuda

Renting Scooters in Bermuda - 3 days in Bermuda Itinerary

There are many scooter rental places in Bermuda. We used the one located right next to our hotel – Smatts Cycle Livery. You can rent them by the day. We only used ours for a couple of hours, but we could see how this was the best option for exploring Bermuda on our own. Even though we only rode around on scooters for a short while, it was a highlight from our Bermuda itinerary.

Is Bermuda A Good Place To Cruise?

by The Cruise Web Team March 14, 2022, 3:51 pm

In a world full of choices, Bermuda cruises remain one of the most popular for cruisers – especially for those cruising from the East Coast! So, it’s a popular destination, but is Bermuda a good place to cruise? Absolutely! Keep reading! We’ll explore the top reasons to take a Bermuda cruise and the only question you’ll have left is “When can I leave?”

Top 3 Reasons Bermuda is a Good Place to Cruise

If we could keep you reading all day, we could list everything that makes Bermuda a good place to cruise, but since your time is valuable, we’ll just run through our top 3 reasons you should cruise to Bermuda:

Bermuda Cruises Are Family-Friendly

Bermuda is the perfect place to cruise with the whole family! Many of the cruise lines that embark on cruises to Bermuda have onboard activities for kids – and some are supervised! Whether your family likes to zip around a go-kart track on a Norwegian Bermuda cruise , or coast down some of the tallest waterslides at sea with Royal Caribbean or even just relax by the pool, there is something for every member of the family on a Bermuda cruise, making it one of the ideal destinations for multi-generational travel.

Not a watersliding, go-kart racing big ship cruiser? Not to worry! For those looking to enjoy a quiet, perhaps even romantic cruise to Bermuda, in luxurious comfort, look no further than Oceania Cruises or the plush, all inclusive Regent Seven Seas ! Both of these lines offer incredible itineraries featuring Bermuda.

Bahamas vs. Bermuda cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

Erica Silverstein

Ah, the bliss of island cruising! Who cares if you choose the Bahamas or Bermuda as your next cruise destination — all islands offer warm weather, gorgeous beaches and outdoor activities year-round. Right?

Wrong. Sure, the Bahamas and Bermuda are both island nations located in the Atlantic Ocean, and you can hit the beach on your cruise to either place. But that's where the similarities end. Bermuda and the Bahamas each possess a unique island vibe and culture, and itineraries to each destination vary in departure ports and cruise styles.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Which itinerary is best for you? Compare Bahamas versus Bermuda cruises to make the right choice for your next vacation at sea.

Bahamas vs. Bermuda cruise itineraries

You can sail on a cruise ship to the Bahamas year-round from a number of port cities in the U.S. including Baltimore; New York City (via ports both in Manhattan and in nearby Bayonne, New Jersey); Fort Lauderdale; Miami; Palm Beach, Florida; Port Canaveral, Florida; Galveston, Texas; and New Orleans. That's because it's beach season all year long in the Bahamas – except when a passing hurricane brings the rain in summer and fall.

Itineraries can be as short as two nights or as long as a week. Both short and weeklong Bahamas cruises sail exclusively to Bahamian ports, but some seven-night sailings mix it up with ports of call in the Caribbean or Florida.

Bermuda, on the other hand, is not hot year-round, so cruises typically sail from April through November. Some cruise lines offer the occasional winter Bermuda cruise, or tack a visit onto an off-season transatlantic sailing. You'll still have fun in the shoulder season, but it might not be swimming weather.

The standard Bermuda cruise is a week, though you can find four- and five-night options. Bermuda cruises depart exclusively from Northeastern ports, including Boston, New York and Baltimore. In most cases, the ship will sail to one of the Bermuda ports and dock there for one to three days before heading back home.

RELATED: Does it make sense to take a short cruise to Bermuda?

The benefit of this style of itinerary is you're in port overnight and can explore the island nation in-depth, from early morning bike rides to romantic sunset sails. However, cruisers who love getting rocked to sleep by the waves will miss those extra nights of sailing when they're docked for two evenings straight.

Bahamas vs. Bermuda ports of call

Bermuda is a former British colony, with a more formal vibe than you'll find in the laid-back Bahamas. Though it's made up of more than 100 islands, its largest and most populated islands are connected by bridges to form the destination we think of as Bermuda. Cruise ships don't island-hop here. They pick one of three cruise ports and dock.

Cruise ships that dock in Hamilton are in the heart of the action; the city is the nation's capital. Visitors can choose from city pursuits like shopping and dining or head to the beaches and golf courses. The Royal Naval Dockyard, referred to as King's Wharf by some cruise lines, is a historic naval site located at the western tip of Bermuda. St. George's on Bermuda's eastern end is a World Heritage Site with narrow, cobblestone streets and oodles of charm. (It was one of the first colonial settlements in the New World.)

Cruises to the Bahamas will visit several Bahamian ports on a weeklong cruise, though a few itineraries feature two days at a cruise line's private island. These private islands -- such as Holland America 's Half Moon Cay, Disney Cruise Line 's Castaway Cay and Royal Caribbean 's Perfect Day at CocoCay – are popular with cruisers for their pristine beaches and plentiful activities, all in a safe environment where your cruise card is accepted currency and a lunch buffet is free.

Avid cruisers give the staple Bahamian ports of Nassau and Freeport mixed reviews. The Freeport cruise port is isolated, and the beaches and resorts on surrounding Grand Bahama Island don't always live up to expectations. Nassau is touristy; the cruise port is located in the heart of a large shopping district. Escape downtown to find yourself a spot on a gorgeous resort beach or hop in a boat for some water sports action.

Bahamas vs. Bermuda beaches and water sports

Neither Bermuda nor the Bahamas will disappoint when it comes to beaches. The Bahamas lure visitors with beach weather year-round, but Bermuda has a more temperate climate. If you cruise there in the shoulder season, the weather might not be warm enough for swimming.

Bermuda is known for its pink-sand beaches, such as Horseshoe Bay Beach, often with scenic rock formations framing the sand and sea. Beaches here are smaller than the far-ranging stretches of sand you find in the Caribbean or U.S. You'll need transportation from the cruise port to the best beaches, though little Snorkel Park Beach is walking distance from King's Wharf.

You can snorkel from a Bermuda beach in many places, or rent kayaks, stand-up paddleboards or boogie boards. Book a tour to try snuba, jet skiing or parasailing. Sailing tours by day or for sunset are popular choices.

All of the cruise line private islands in the Bahamas offer idyllic beach days, with gorgeous white-sand beaches, on-site bars and buffets, and a variety of activities, from snorkeling to kayaking and horseback riding. You won't be bothered by vendors trying to braid your hair or sell you souvenirs, though staff will come through taking drink orders.

Nassau and Freeport are also popular beach destinations, and many people will purchase day passes to resorts for the nicest and safest options. Junkanoo Beach is walking distance from the Nassau cruise port and offers on-site bars, restaurants and water sports rentals, but it's more of a party beach than a tropical idyll. Head to Atlantis if you want a beachfront waterpark as your playground for the day. Be warned, though: Day passes don't come cheap.

Freeport's beaches range in quality when it comes to resort amenities, and beach clubs occasionally over-promise and under-deliver. Bimini has that private-island vibe, with an emphasis on sunbathing, diving, snorkeling and boating.

You'll find all your favorite water sports in the Bahamas. Snorkel, dive, sail, kayak or take a glass-bottom boat tour on your own or via an excursion. If you're a wildlife fan, you can swim with dolphins, stingrays, sharks and even pigs.

Bahamas vs. Bermuda shore excursions and activities

The main difference between Bermuda and the Bahamas is that beaches and water sports are the key activities in the Bahamas, while Bermuda's attractions are more varied.

In Bermuda, cruise visitors can enjoy the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo, as well as historic forts and the limestone formations of the Crystal Caves. The island's capital, Hamilton, is a small city and its Front Street is chock-full of shops and restaurants. Hop on a bike and pedal your way along the Bermuda Railway Trail or to Cooper's Island Nature Reserve.

Bermuda is also famous for its plentiful golf courses, and enthusiasts can book tee times at courses such as Belmont Hills and Turtle Hill.

Nassau has a few historic sites, such as the Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle, but they are not the main attraction. The Pirates of Nassau Museum is a fun rainy day destination, and the small National Art Gallery set in a historic home is a hidden gem. You'll find plenty of shopping on Bay Street from the straw market to high-end jewelry stores, but check out the artisans market in Pompey Square for locally made goods.

Bottom line

When pitting Bermuda versus the Bahamas as your potential cruise destination, you need to match each island nation's beaches, activities and ports of call with your preferred vacation style.

Bahamas Vs. Bermuda: Which Should You Visit?

By Suzie Dundas

Last updated: December 4th, 2023

Bahamas vs Bermuda

  • Find a Cruise

Deciding whether your next trip should be to Bermuda or The Bahamas can be a difficult decision. However, the difficulty isn’t with the question, “Should I visit The Bahamas vs. Bermuda?” but rather, “Which should I visit first?” Both are stunning destinations, and if you’re fortunate enough to visit both, you’ll understand that they’re each unique.

While there are some similarities—you’ll find world-class beaches, incredible snorkeling sites, and regional delicacies in both—all it takes is a quick dive into the activities and history of each place to see how different they really are. Depending on where you live and in what season you want to travel, one island may prove to be a better choice, too.

To help make the decision easier, explore the differences between The Bahamas vs. Bermuda below.

Weather & Best Time to Visit

Couple taking a selfie at Jobson’s Cove Beach

Jobson’s Cove Beach, Bermuda

The best time to visit Bermuda is usually in the late spring and early summer when parts of the U.S. are still chilly and travelers are anxious to get a jumpstart on summer vacations.

If you’re craving warm beach days, it’s best to travel in June or July, when the average daytime temperature is in the low 80s. If you’re looking for a vacation experience with fewer crowds, May is your best bet.

View of the waterfront in Nassau

Nassau, Bahamas

If you’re headed to The Bahamas, you’ll have more flexibility on when to go, which may influence your decision to visit The Bahamas vs. Bermuda. Because it’s closer to the equator, The Bahamas has less seasonal weather and temperature fluctuation.

The coldest months are December and January, though temperatures are still in the mid-70s. That’s the most popular time to visit The Bahamas as it provides an escape from the snow and single-digit temperatures across the U.S.

Spring and fall are a happy medium between the off-season and the busy season, though early fall has a slightly higher risk of storms from Caribbean hurricanes .

Blue Lagoon Island, The Bahamas

Blue Lagoon Island, The Bahamas

If you’re deciding between The Bahamas vs. Bermuda, travel time may be a factor, especially if you only have a few days for your getaway.

Bermuda is in the Atlantic, roughly even with North Carolina. Cruises to Bermuda leave from the New York area and last for seven to ten nights.

The Bahamas may be more convenient if you only have a long weekend or live close to South Florida. Quick two- to four-night cruises depart from Miami and Fort Lauderdale to The Bahamas, making it the perfect destination for a quick getaway.

Couple in front of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse

Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, Bermuda

If you’re a history buff, both The Bahamas and Bermuda are good options, but Bermuda may have a slight edge. One of the most popular historical sites to visit in Bermuda is the Old Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, which dates back to 1846. Touring the forts around the Royal Naval Dockyard can also fill at least a day as the island was once England’s military stronghold in the Atlantic (and has a related pirate history that’s quite fascinating).

Old cannon in Fort Charlotte

Fort Charlotte, Bahamas

In The Bahamas, the main historic site most guests visit is Fort Charlotte, near Nassau . However, there’s also a fully operational winery in The Bahamas set on an 1800s-era historic site, which offers a nice blend of history and wine tasting.

Underwater Exploration & Wildlife

When it comes to wildlife, the “Bahamas vs. Bermuda” question becomes a trickier one to answer. Regardless of which you choose, you’ll find a variety of natural experiences in both places. And, of course, once you’re in the water, there’s no way to guarantee what marine animals you will or won’t see.

People swimming with dolphins

Blue Lagoon Island, Bahamas

If you love marine mammals, you may be better off heading to The Bahamas. In Nassau, you can get in the water with both dolphins and sea lions under the guidance of a certified trainer. Bermuda also offers a dolphin experience, and though you can’t get up close to sea lions, there is an excellent zoo and aquarium.

If snorkeling is your favorite ocean pastime, both islands are winners. Sea turtles are familiar sights in both destinations. For some, snorkeling in the Bermuda Triangle may have a certain allure to it. Or you might appreciate the convenience of being able to snorkel in the Bahamas right from an all-inclusive beach club.

Woman snorkeling in Bermuda Triangle

Bermuda Triangle

If you don’t snorkel, both islands offer alternate ways to get on the water, including glass-bottom boat tours and catamaran sails. Bermuda has a particularly exciting evening glass-bottom boat tour that leads to a sunken ship, while The Bahamas offers a low-key glass-bottom boat tour complete with rum cocktails and Caribbean music.

If you’re a scuba diver, you’re probably wondering which has the best underwater sites to explore. If you like scuba diving on shipwrecks, head to Bermuda. Thanks to the famous Bermuda Triangle, the country has more shipwrecks per square mile than anywhere else in the world. Many are very shallow, allowing for fantastic photography and easy diving in clear water (though it can be chilly enough that you’ll want a long wetsuit).

If you’re diving in The Bahamas, you won’t find as many shipwrecks, but the water tends to be warmer, so you don’t need to wear as thick of a wetsuit. The visibility is also better as it’s protected more from the open sea. You’ll find more coral reefs and sandbars here, which may appeal to newer divers not quite ready to explore a wreck.

Aerial view of Horseshoe Bay Beach

Horseshoe Bay Beach, Bermuda

Luckily for beach lovers, both islands have them in droves, though they are a little different. One of the most famous beaches in Bermuda is Horseshoe Bay, often considered one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. The beach’s bright pink sand is incredibly soft and gently drops into the ocean, creating perfect conditions for a day spent relaxing in the warm water. It’s easy to find beach chairs, umbrellas, and snorkel gear rentals along the beach.

If you feel like going for a jog or a stroll, you can walk down to Warwick Long Bay Beach, which is almost equally as beautiful. There are several beaches hidden in rocky coves between Horseshoe Bay and Warwick Long Bay, and you’ll find plenty of opportunities to try frozen drinks and island snacks from food carts and beach bars along the shore, making the area a favorite for couples on a Bermuda honeymoon .

In The Bahamas, you have even more options. While the sand isn’t pink, it’s equally soft and inviting. A popular beach near Nassau is Blue Lagoon Island. Here, you’ll find a huge central lagoon, hammocks, easy snorkeling, beach food, and Bahamian drinks in a laid-back atmosphere.

Scenic view of resort hotel Paradise Island Atlantis Resort

Atlantis Resort in Nassau, Bahamas

You can’t talk about beaches in The Bahamas without mentioning the world-famous Atlantis Resort, home to some of the best beaches in Nassau and among the most popular attractions in the entire region. In addition to a luxurious five-mile beach, the resort is home to a waterpark complete with slides, huge pools, a relaxing river float, and private cabanas.

Atlantis is also home to a fabulous marine habitat worth at least a few hours on its own. The marine center has different lagoon habitats on-site for animals like sharks, rays, alligators, and sea turtles.

Aerial view of Pearl Island with lighthouse

Pearl Island, Bahamas

Beach enthusiasts may also want to consider a trip to Pearl Island, a private island away from the crowds closer to Nassau. In addition to having high-end and comfortable amenities, the island is just a quick swim from a fabulous coral reef, where you’ll have a good chance of spotting some of the most colorful wildlife in the Caribbean .

Good news for foodies: you can’t go wrong in The Bahamas vs. Bermuda debate. Both islands have incredibly fresh and flavorful seafood, plus a variety of unique food experiences.

Bottles of rum in John Watling’s Distillery

John Watling’s Distillery, Bahamas

While in The Bahamas, try a rum cake, one of the most decadent Bahamian dishes . The best rum cakes come from The Bahamas Rum Cake Factory, and yes, samples are always available. You can also taste the island’s most famous rum at the John Watling’s Distillery, which is housed in an estate dating back to 1789. If you have time, it’s also fun to swing by the local fish and farmer’s market, called Potter’s Cay. It’s open every day and is the perfect place to try small bites and local island flavors.

Restaurant by the water in Hamilton

Hamilton, Bermuda

Of course, Bermuda has more than its fair share of memorable gastronomic experiences, too. If you feel like spending an evening out on the town, consider doing a pub crawl through the Hamilton neighborhood. Unlike a more college-style pub crawl, you’ll visit waterfront restaurants and all-ages beach bars. Most establishments offer discounts to pub crawlers, and you can do your own personal taste test to decide which is the best rum swizzle in town.

If you’re seeking a more elegant experience, you may opt for a classic tea service, modeled on the traditions of England in the 1600s. Tea is accompanied by a traditional spread of scones, cakes, and small sandwiches.

Cruise ship operations to resume from Baltimore later this month, port confirms

bermuda cruise reddit

Cruises from Baltimore will resume later this month.

Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas will leave from the city on May 25. That will mark the first cruise ship to do so since the March collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge , the Port of Baltimore said in a Facebook post .

Vision of the Seas will sail a round-trip cruise to Bermuda, according to CruiseMapper . Royal Caribbean previously moved the ship’s operations to Norfolk, Virginia in the wake of the bridge collapse.

“Royal Caribbean International looks forward to returning to the Port of Baltimore once again,” a spokesperson told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. “Vision of the Seas will set sail on a 5-night itinerary as planned on Saturday, May 25 after completing its previously scheduled drydock in the Bahamas.”

Carnival Cruise Line also expects to return this month.

Carnival will embark guests on Carnival Pride’s May 19 cruise in Norfolk, but anticipates it will end the trip in Baltimore.

“We are encouraging our guests to register for our complimentary bus service between Baltimore and Norfolk for the sailing's embarkation,” spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in an emailed statement. “We remain in close contact with local, state and federal officials regarding the return of our operations at the Port of Baltimore.”
