We went on the tour of the West of Madeira. The price was good, for an 8 hour trip. Our guide Nuno was friendly, chatty, funny, knowledgeable and interesting. One morning stop was too cloudy to bother with so he took us there in the afternoon - it would have been very easy for him to miss it out. The stops were, by and large, good. By the afternoon we were flagging a bit, but the trip overall was really worth doing and an excellent way to see the island. Nuno's driving was really good - we'd been slightly worried about being in a mini-bus on very steep and windy roads, but he went skilfully and cautiously and we didn't at any stage feel car sick. His commentary was never too much, but was worth listening to. Our reservations? The seat belts didn't work but the driving was cautious enough for that not to be a worry. Other than that, it was great.

Excellentcompany

Used Lido in 2017 and again this year. Did 3 tours and 2 levada walks. All excellent value with good guides who spoke excellent English. Particular thanks to Ruby for our 2 levada walks, which she made really special. I cannot recommend the company highly enough - we look forward to using Lido again when we next visit Madeira

good tour experience

Went on 2 tours; Rabaçal / Risco / 25 Fontes and Madeira Island Tour to the East, both were great and represented good value. We bought from the office in Funchal, 39 euro for each tour so it looks like it is a little cheaper online but it was great to be able to talk through options and Sara was really helpful

Amazing tour company, best in Madeira

I used 2 tours: West tour and Nuns valley And it was worth every penny, the views were spectacular, tour guide was really really friendly and super helpful. I used getyourguide to book them and I got instant confrimation and they pick uped me from hotel just on time. Yes, there are some tiny drawbacks - The minivan that thei used ( Renaault ) was extremly uncomfortable, seat pitch was horrible and suspencion was even worse BUT the tour itself was so AMAZING, that those tiny faults are nothing.

Levada Walks in Madeira

Madeira is unique for its accessible and extensive watercourses.

"Levada" is a Portuguese word that derives from "levar", which means to carry and is very loosely interpreted as "carriageway". A more correct translation would be mini-canal. The levadas were originally created in the 16th Century to bring water from the rainy northern aspect of the island to the sun soaked south where crops such as sugar, bananas and grapes grow. The original settlers chipped away at the cliffs and tunnelled through solid rock to make channels and tunnels all with a very slight slope so that the water meandered down towards its destination. To this Day, the Levadeiro remains one of the oldest Jobs on the island. These men are in charge of opening and shutting the gates which control the flow of the levadas.

In total there are 2500 kms of levadas on the island and many were created even before the first roads!

Levada walks are very popular in Madeira as the way is cleared by maintained paths running along the water making it a calming experience with a scenic background of nature at its most lush. It also allows access to many parts not available to those driving.  A truly iconic and enjoyable experience.
