What is a mission trip?
A mission trip is an international volunteering opportunity centered around collaborative efforts with local communities to provide essential support where it is most needed. These trips can be either religious or non-religious in nature, aiming to uplift individuals, local communities, and natural environments across the globe. IVHQ offers inclusive volunteer abroad programs that welcome participants of all ages and life stages.
Through IVHQ’s diverse range of mission trips , individuals can make a tangible impact while fostering new friendships, discovering diverse cultures, and broadening their horizons—all while contributing to the well-being of those who require assistance the most.
Why do people go on mission trips?
Mission trips are a popular way to combine your desire to travel and see with world with your motivation to give back and make a difference in the world. While some people see mission trips as an opportunity to put their faith into action, others go on mission trips for a variety of non-religious reasons, including:
To make a difference: Many people go on mission trips make a positive impact in the world through providing support to communities in a range of different ways. This could involve volunteering to teach English , building schools or homes , providing medical care , volunteering with animals or supporting environmental conservation .
To gain a new perspective: Traveling to a new country and immersing yourself in a different culture can be a life-changing and transformative experience. Mission trips allow you to see the world with fresh eyes and gain a better understanding of different cultures and ways of life.
To meet new people: Mission trips offer an opportunity to connect with people from all around the world. International volunteers work together towards a common goal, often forming life-long friendships and connections along the way.
To get out of your comfort zone : Mission trips are an opportunity to discover a new sense of purpose by stepping out of your comfort zone, discovering new countries and cultures, and living like the locals. This can be equally challenging and rewarding! Taking a mission trip is an opportunity to growth as person, discover your strengths and weaknesses and redefine your purpose in life.
While people go on mission trips for a variety of reasons, at the heart of it is a desire to make a positive impact on the world, connect with others and build a better future together.
I recently returned from a mission trip to Sri Lanka and it was everything I dreamt it would be. I lived with a family in the jungle next to the longest river in the country, volunteering in a disabled childcare center. I was so happy with the project and had a wonderful - and sometimes challenging - experience. I would recommend this mission trip to anyone who wants to travel alone.

God commands us to love our neighbors, and Bold Hope takes that directive seriously. We value long-term relationships and the impacts they can have on growth. Let us help you connect with and serve people through a group mission trip. Our short-term mission trips allow you to meet new people, exchange life lessons and create friendships that can last a lifetime. When you volunteer to visit a new country for a nonprofit mission trip, you will learn that we are all people who can relate to each other despite country borders.
We work with long-term partners determined to bring opportunities to those in developing nations. Our partners work day and night, with the goal of bringing HOPE to their communities. This can be difficult at times, as carrying the responsibilities of their work can weigh on faith, finances and health. You can support and empower these partners through your own contributions. By helping in any way you can, whether through donations or a short-term mission trip, we can bring HOPE to those in need. You may believe your actions are small, but they make a difference to those around you
HOPE grows and changes who we are. Those who take a chance and go on a volunteer mission trip with us can become transformed and breathe new life into communities. Come together and bring good news to communities separated from us by borders but connected to us by God's word. When you volunteer to travel to a Third World country, the gospel can transform lives while God uses the experience to change yours as well.

Short Term Trips
Navigators World Missions focuses’ on creating short-term mission trips that can make a long-term impact. Our short-term missions invite you to join our global ministry by engaging The Navigators Worldwide Partnership (a multi-national network) to advance the Gospel into the nations. We desire to work with local ministers of the Gospel to energize their ministries as they seek to know Christ, make Him known, and help others do the same.
Though most of our trips are four to six weeks, Navigators World Missions defines short-term as an opportunity to serve cross-culturally for less than one year. Our short-term missions include winter, spring, and summer trips, a host of internships, and our Study Abroad Network.
The deadline to apply for Winter 2023-2024 mission trips is October 13, 2023. Applications for Summer 2024 mission trips are due by March 1, 2024.

If you don’t love the energy from Mark Pope at this point, I am not sure what to tell you.
The newest head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats has made it clear numerous times he is incredibly passionate for Big Blue Nation and getting the best players he can as well.
Pope went the extra mile, literally, to get Andrew Carr to Lexington after Carr’s family missed their flight to Bluegrass Airport.
The family ended up in Nashville, and Pope drove himself down and picked them up in his own car. That is a pretty awesome thing to do.
Most recently, he waited at an airport in Utah for his newest Wildcat, Collin Chandler, who arrived back home after his two-year mission.

Chandler was a top-40 recruit after being named The 2022 Utah Gatorade Player of the Year. He has the potential to be a stud in Lexington after flipping from BYU to Kentucky after the Pope hire.
The passion that Pope has for his players is already showing, and you love to see it!

Healthcare workers speak about mission trips to Gaza with Virginia Tech Carilion students
The panelists featured anesthesiologist dr. abdullah brown, or and er nurse lana, and urologist dr. mazen hasan.
Connor Dietrich , Multimedia Journalist
ROANOKE, Va. – A group of Virginia Tech Carilion students heard stories of heroism and terror from a panel of healthcare workers who took mission trips to Gaza.
The panelists include anesthesiologist Dr. Abdullah Brown, OR and ER nurse Lana, and urologist Dr. Mazen Hasan.
Have the morning's biggest stories arrive in your inbox every day at noon
Each of them are active members of Doctors Against Genocide, a group of healthcare workers that have been organizing actions and speaking with federal government officials in bringing a ceasefire in Gaza.
The stories shared mentioned the chaos in Gaza during the war. Hospitals filled with patients, a lack of resources and people to help.
Dr. Abdullah Brown has been to many war zones to help but nothing compared to the scenes in Gaza.
“We’re doctors right, we’re surgeons, we’re anesthesiologists, this is where we live is in the operating room. We’re looking at wounds there in Gaza and we don’t understand what causes these wounds,” Dr. Brown said. “We’ll find a bullet, the surgeon will find a bullet but the wounds are unlike any bullet wounds we’re familiar with. The destruction, the burns...unlike anything we’ve seen.”
Until Friday, Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech School of Medicine had not held a large-scale event addressing the attack on healthcare workers in Gaza.

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!
It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.
The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.
The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!
The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.
The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!
Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!
If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!
The Alexander Garden
- A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
- Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
- The park is open every day and has no entrance fee
The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!
The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.
Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!
The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.
It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!
Ostankino Television Tower
- Television and radio tower in Moscow
- Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
- Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!
For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!
It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!
The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!
Izmaylovo District
- The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
- Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
- Most popular during the summer and on weekends
Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.
The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!
Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!
You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!
Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.
The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!
Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!
The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.
Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!
If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.
The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.
However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

Best Domestic Mission Trips for 2024
Every year, we get incredibly excited to welcome volunteers to learn and serve in communities across the U.S. We hope you and your group are ready to come with open eyes to see and understand life in different communities as well as open hands to give of your time and resources to encourage and support the awesome work being done in these communities year-round. The following is a list of EM’s best domestic mission trip opportunities for groups in 2024!
1. Experience Life & Faith in the Navajo Nation (Arizona / New Mexico)
Serving with local churches on the Navajo Reservation is a window into an entirely different culture within the U.S. borders. Indigenous communities like the Navajo Nation in the Southwest have been hit hard by years and years of difficult circumstances long before COVID (which also wreaked havoc on Native communities). Volunteer groups have opportunities to share the love of God not simply through work projects, but also by taking the time to listen and learn from Navajo people. Come and experience life and faith in rural communities where culture, traditions, and family mean so much, and God is moving in ways you wouldn’t expect.

2. Serve Rural Mountain Communities in Appalachia (West Virginia / Kentucky)
Bring your team to serve in places rarely covered by the news. Serve alongside EM’s local partner churches and ministries in rural Appalachia communities in Kentucky and West Virginia. For those living in the eastern half of the country, these communities offer the added bonus of being an easy and meaningful way to serve without having to deal with air travel. So, simplify your 2024 mission trip plans and join us to serve and grow together in Appalachia.

3. Relief and Support in Puerto Rico
For the feel of an international mission trip without the unknown of international travel, bring your group to serve on a mission trip to Puerto Rico in 2024. As a territory of the United States, Puerto Rico is a remarkably easy place to travel for all citizens of the U.S. But it is also still reeling from devastating hurricanes in 2017 and 2022 and a series of earthquakes in January 2020. Sadly, Puerto Rico has not historically received the same measure of government assistance typically given to mainland states in the wake of natural disasters. This has left much of the work of recovery and rebuilding homes and lives up to local communities and non-profit organizations. On your mission trip, you’ll partner with Puerto Rican-led ministries engaging local people to serve their neighbors one house and neighborhood at a time.

4. Urban Missions (in New York City and Chicago)
Bring your team to serve on a mission trip in an urban community and be the hands and feet of Jesus in many different settings. Come face to face with the harsh realities of homelessness, human trafficking, and broken families but also be inspired by local people and organizations who are making a difference in some of the country's toughest neighborhoods. Many volunteer opportunities to show love to people in highly-impacted communities were shut down the last two summers. Come remind people from all walks of life that they are seen, known, and loved.

5. Experience Life on the Border in South Texas
Put your preconceived notions about immigration or border walls aside and see the real faces of people impacted by these realities on a daily basis. Connect with immigrant families from Mexico and Central America through local ministries and non-profit organizations seeking to serve the whole person by providing food, clothes, hygiene kits, and more—reminders to each person that they matter. Share the love of God by reaching out to immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in their distress, while also learning more about Mexican culture, what drives people to seek asylum, and day-to-day life on the southern border. You will not regret this opportunity to experience these realities firsthand.

6. Support Struggling Families in Savannah, GA
With its charming historic districts, lush parks, and vibrant cultural scene, Savannah is not only a picturesque Southern city but also a place where the spirit of community and compassion thrives. However, amidst the beauty lies a pressing issue: a housing crisis that has left many families in precarious living conditions. EM's week-long mission trips to Savannah focus on addressing this housing crisis. During your stay, you will engage in work projects like painting and repairing homes, as well as helping with much-needed renovations. These efforts not only provide immediate relief but also contribute to the long-term stability of the community.
