TOUR PHOTOS

Hanalei Valley

This was such a fantastic tour that we will probably do it again in the future!

Our tour guide was wonderful. She was full of fun-filled facts about the island, Hawaiian culture and of course, told us about all the movies and movie locations. By the end of the tour, we had learned a lot about not only about movie making on Kauaʻi, but a lot about the island itself. This tour is definitely worth doing.

We planned this tour even before leaving the mainland as we expected it to be the highlight of our trip. It was a fun and relaxing way to see Kauaʻi as we watched film clips that were timed to match the arrival at various points of interest. Now that we are home, we are watching the movies again with our new memories!

Kualoa Ranch, Oahu

Famous Oahu Film Locations You Can Actually Visit

December 11, 2019

Megan Potter

Oahu is a remarkable island with some of the most stunning backdrops -- you might even recognize them from famous films! The island's diverse landscapes make it a popular spot for filming. With Shaka Guide, we'll take you to a handful of these locations on our Oahu tours . You can pretend to be an extra or the star of the show at any of these Oahu film spots!

Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch is a private nature reserve located on Oahu's windward side. This 4,000-acre property features both mountain and ocean views. Production companies can use the site to film in the valleys or on the farmland. They can get jungle shots or remote beach scenes -- Kualoa Ranch provides the ultimate canvas! It's such a popular spot for filming, it has a guided Hollywood Movie Sites Tour through the grounds. Here are details about the tour as well as some of the movies that were filmed at Kualoa Ranch.

Kualoa Ranch's Hollywood Movie Sites Tour

Hours : 7:00 AM-5:00 PM Tour Duration : 90 minutes Price :            $36.95 Adults, $25.95 Kids (3-12) Low Season            $47.95 Adults, $35.95 Kids (3-12) High Season (June-August)

Jurassic Park

When watching Jurassic Park, did you catch yourself marveling at the vast views and luscious forest? It feels like you're experiencing an entirely different world, right? That’s Kualoa Ranch. While you're there, look out for the fallen tree from the first Jurassic Park movie filmed in 1993.

50 First Dates

50 First Dates is set in Oahu's outback. There are various film locations from the movie around the island, but one of the most important spots is at Kualoa Ranch. It's the site of the Hukilau Café where Henry met Lucy and the Whitmore House where Lucy lived.

While you're exploring Kualoa Ranch, look out for Godzilla's footprints! During filming, the 40-ft footprints were dug a few yards deep to increase the depth and showcase the monster's size. However, after several cattle on the ranch tumbled into these holes, the ranch had to alter the depth. Even though they're slightly different from the ones in the movie, you can still see these enormous footprints!

There are many scenes from the show Lost that were filmed at Kualoa Ranch, one of the most notable is Hurley’s golf course. During the show, Hurley felt the survivors were becoming too stressed, so he decided to create his own golf course. He built a two-hole, three par course in the valley. Now when visiting Kualoa Ranch, you can see his golf course on the tour!

Visit Kualoa Ranch while you're taking Shaka Guide's Grand Circle Island Tour .

Turtle Bay Resort

Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu's North Shore is another popular film spot for Hollywood movies. In fact, much of the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall was filmed at the hotel. Peter -- Jason Segel -- gets dumped by his girlfriend Sarah Marshall -- Kristen Bell -- and he flees to a resort where he coincidentally runs into her. The hotel concierge -- Mila Kunis -- lets him stay in the Oprah Suite free of charge. Although there is no real-life Oprah Suite, you can watch the movie before you go and lookout for familiar spots.

Turtle Bay was also featured in Lost, Soul Surfer, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.

Stop at Turtle Bay on Shaka Guide's Grand Circle Island Tour .

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Eternity Cove

Also known as Halona Beach Cove or Cockroach Cove, this beach is famous for it's role in the movie From Here to Eternity. It set the stage for the famous kissing scene between Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr’s characters. Although the movies was made in the 1950's, the spot has remained popular with producers and filmmakers. It was featured in a number of movies, such as “Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides,” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”

The majestic cliffs and spires of the Kualoa Mountains, the lush greenery of the Ka'a'awa Valley, the ancient fishponds on the south side of the property, the quintessential view of Chinaman's Hat (Mokolo'i Island) ... all these features and more have attracted production companies and will continue to do so as long as the cameras continue to roll.

Ready for a partial list? The modern iteration of Hawaii 5-0 premier's OPENING SCENE featured a WWII military bunker that is visited on this tour. The walls of this bunker are lined with historic photos of the ranch and scenes from many of the movies that were made here. Many many more scenes from Hawaii 5-0 have been shot here over the years! And then there's the previous hit show LOST ... many episodes were shot here including Hurley's golf course. Fantasy Island ... Byrds of Paradise ... and who can forget Magnum PI? Kualoa Ranch has some of the most spectacular landscapes in Hawaii … that's the reason so many of the Hollywood films and TV shows have shot scenes here. If you do a movie site tour at Kualoa Ranch now, years from now you will recognize scenes in future movies that at this moment are nothing more than dreams in the minds of their producers! This area has been and will continue to be a "Mecca" for the entertainment industry for years to come.

The best deal here is the Best of Kualoa Package … which allows you to "make a day out of it" when you go to Kualoa Ranch. Since lunch is included and you get to do three completely different Kualoa experiences, you get to see the most (obviously) on this all-day experience. If you are just wanting to see the basic sights at Kualoa Ranch on a day when you are driving around the north shore and have other things to see and do, then maybe the 90 Minute Hollywood tour or the 2.5 hour Jurassic Adventure would work for you.

For those utilizing the ranch's transportation from Waikiki and doing one of the Experience packages, pickup is between 7:15am and 7:45am depending on your hotel. Those driving themselves to the ranch for one of the packages should arrive no later than 8:30am. If you are doing the Hollywood Movie Site Tour as a single event, or doing the Jurassic Adventure Tour, your checkin is 45 minutes prior to your stated tour time and will specifically be listed in your email confirmation.

Transportation is now also being offered for single events, but you WILL be at the ranch for quite a while exceeding the length of your tour. If that's the case, plan on buying lunch in their restaurant.

Our bus driver was Sam! He was funny and informative. We loved being able to see the island and movie clips from a different perspective! They also had just got new buses which were beautiful and comfortable! They also make stops for potty breaks and ample photo shoot time! I would recommend to anyone who had never visited the island! It helps give you ideas of where you might wanna go again when you’re on your own!

This was amazing!!

This was amazing!! More than we expected and enjoyed all the sites we saw. Provided great and many photo ops! Super friendly! Absolutely recommend! We went on the tour on our first day and was just perfect to get a look around town.

Amazing Tour!!

We took this tour yesterday and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the tour. We were able to see screen shots of the movie and compare it to the actual locations which is very helpful for people like my husband who is not as big as a fan as I am to remember. In addition to all the lost locations, we were able to see many beautiful locations!! David, our tour guide, was an honest and genuine man who made sure we got our money’s worth. He was very knowledgable and was able to answer questions we had about the state of Hawaii, Pearl Harbor, and other historic events. I highly recommend this tour!

Great Experience!

It was a great experience to get to know most of the island with a Lost show theme, it’s a great way to visualize the distances between places and to plan to came back where you would like to explore more during your trip. Dave was SO informative about all locations that we visited/ stopped to take pictures. He was also very kind to take family photos of us. We really appreciate his patience waiting for us to take masks off as we posed for the photos! We learned and remembered a lot not just about our beloved show Lost but also about Oahu as a whole. He was absolutely on time not only on pick up / drop off , but communicating with him was great and a breeze, by email or phone, fast and helpful. That kind of certainly we needed to plan this part of the trip. My family and I really enjoyed this tour. We were 3 people in the car plus Dave, we felt welcomed and safe. I totally recommend this tour! It’s 5 stars!

Fabulous 4,000 acre ranch in Ka’a’awa Valley with huge variety of super fun activities from beach to ocean to zip lines to horses, jeeps, buses and more. Breathtakingly beautiful mountains. One of the best places in Hawaii Nei.

Our family took the Jurassic Park tour yesterday. Our son was interested in this and we decided to go. Our tour guide, Sunshine, was wonderful. She knew so many facts about the movies and the ranch, made the tour enjoyable (even for those of us who knew little about the movies), and was an expert in making sure we took pictures. I would highly recommend visiting the ranch!

Matching your mom? That’s hot.

Paris Hilton and her 6-month-old daughter, London , wore coordinating pink ensembles during a recent family vacation to Hawaii.

The “Stars Are Blind” singer, 43, shared sweet snaps of herself posing with London and son Phoenix, 16 months — whom she shares with husband Carter Reum — in which she and her baby girl don equally rosy attire.

Hilton rocked a light pink T-shirt that read “PARIS” in rhinestones with matching shorts. Meanwhile, London wore a pink onesie emblazoned with rainbows, hearts and stars.

Both accessorized their looks with pink sunglasses. Meanwhile, Phoenix looked adorable in what appeared to be a striped bathing suit bottom.

“Reliving my childhood and carrying on our family vacation tradition at the @GrandWailea with my beautiful family🥰🌸,” Hilton wrote on Instagram.

The adorable trio cuddled up together on a fuzzy pink blanket covered in Hilton’s signature “That’s Hot” catchphrase, plus images of kiss marks and diamonds.

The fragrance mogul’s brother Barron Hilton, his wife, Tessa Hilton, and their kids joined Paris, Reum, 43, and their children on the tropical getaway in Maui.

Earlier this month, proud aunt Nicky Hilton gushed in an exclusive interview with Page Six that London is the “spitting image” of her — while Nicky’s daughter, Lily-Grace, 7, is a Paris mini-me.

“London looks exactly like me as a child,” the fashion designer said of her sister’s second kid. “And my daughter looks exactly like Paris as a child, so it’s very interesting how the genes crossed.”

Nicky, 40 — who also shares daughter Teddy, 6, and son Chasen, 23 months, with husband James Rothschild — added, “If you look at a picture of my daughter and Paris next to each other, it’s like twins. Same teeth, the almond eyes, everything.”

Paris and Nicky Hilton

Paris — who welcomed Phoenix and London with Reum via surrogate — has always dreamed of starting a family, especially raising a daughter.

“I’m just excited to one day have a little girl named London, and she’ll have her big brother Phoenix to look after her,” she told Vogue in March 2023.

“I’ve been planning this for a long time. I just had to find the right partner to do it with. It’s so hard to trust people, and I’m so grateful to have found my husband.”

PGA TOUR reacts to the death of Grayson Murray

Change Text Size

FORT WORTH, Texas — The PGA TOUR community has responded with sadness, shock and sympathy to the passing of two-time PGA TOUR winner Grayson Murray.

The Raleigh, North Carolina, native passed away unexpectedly Saturday at the age of 30. PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan and many of Murray’s fellow PGA TOUR players have expressed condolences to his family and shared their memories of Murray, both on social media and at this week's Charles Schwab Challenge.

“Grayson was a remarkable player,” Commissioner Monahan said. “But he was a very courageous man as well, and I’ve always loved that about him.”

After completing Sunday's final round at Colonial, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler said it was hard to play golf after the news, but he knew that Murray's family wished for competition to proceed.

"Obviously it was a pretty difficult day to come out to the golf course with news of Grayson yesterday and, you know, spent that moment of silence today really just thinking about him and praying for his family and his fiancée, and obviously it was pretty difficult to come play golf," Scheffler said. "But like his parents said, he would have wanted the tournament to continue.

"I got to know him fairly well over the last few months, shared a couple meals with him, played a couple practice rounds. I was with him for a few hours, he was at our rental house last week. It's a tough day for all of us out here on TOUR and we're thinking about his family and we're praying hard for them, for sure."

Akshay Bhatia, a fellow North Carolina native and two-time TOUR winner, shared a photo on Instagram of him congratulating Murray after Murray's win at this year's Sony Open in Hawaii. “Words can’t describe how tough this is,” Bhatia wrote. “A great friend that always supported me as I did to him. I’m gonna miss you so much man. You fought so hard.”

Justin Thomas posted on X that he was “speechless,” adding: “Guy has been through so many ups and downs to get to where he was. I hurt so much for his family and people closest to him.”

Webb Simpson first met Murray when he was around 8 years old in their shared hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina.

“He was a competitor and a great player,” Simpson said.

Fourteen years ago, Murray became the first winner of Simpson’s junior tournament, the Webb Simpson Challenge. Both Simpson and Murray had worked with swing coach Ted Kiegiel, the director of golf at Carolina Country Club in Raleigh, at various points in their careers. Simpson shared a meal with Murray at this year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and encouraged him at the recent Wells Fargo Championship, saying that Murray was well on his way to establishing himself as a top-50 player.

“When you hear news like that over the phone you don't think it's real at first, and you know, you hear the emotion coming from our swing coach and then you realize it's real,” Simpson said.

“You know, I think he has really explored his faith over the years, and it seemed like the last six months to eight months he had really started committing his life to Christ and trying to honor Christ with his life. It definitely seemed like there was more of a lightness to him, in a good way, over these past few months when I would see him,” he said.

Murray finished 10th at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte two weeks ago. His family was there to watch him compete that week in his home state.

“His mom talked about being at Quail Hollow for the entire week and seeing him play so well, being so proud of the way he played and for them to share that week together is a memory that she will take forward and cherish for the rest of her life,” Commissioner Monahan told CBS. “Obviously this is a family that is devastated and there are so many members of that family that are coming together, and they are going to have our full support.”

Murray was a talented player since his youth, winning three consecutive Callaway Golf Junior World titles and making a cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at just 16 years old. He was a PGA TOUR rookie at 23 years old and earned his first PGA TOUR title that season, winning the 2017 Barbasol Championship. Murray won his second PGA TOUR title at this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii.

Peter Malnati, who played alongside Murray in the first two rounds of this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge, broke down into tears while speaking Saturday with CBS’ Amanda Balionis.

“We all want to beat each other,” Malnati said. “And then something like this happens and you realize that we’re all just humans. It’s just a really, really hard day.”

He added: “It’s a huge loss for all of us on the PGA TOUR. It’s a huge loss for our fans. At a time like this you realize that, as much as we want to beat each other, as much as we want to be competitive, we really are one big family and we lost one today, and that’s terrible.”

Luke Donald called the news "truly devastating" in a post on X. “He asked me for some advice on how to play Augusta a few months ago, last week I saw him at the PGA Championship, life truly is precious," Donald wrote.

“(Grayson) was a true gentleman,” posted Matthieu Pavon.

Kip Henley, who caddied for Murray for two of his Korn Ferry Tour victories, posted on X that he was “lost for words.” Murray “had a heart of gold,” Henley wrote.

“My heart and prayers go out to his beautiful family,” Henley wrote. “They are (the) sweetest people who couldn’t have loved their son anymore (sic) than they did.”

Grayson Murray and his parents' unanswered question: Why did he take his own life if he was loved?

The golfer died by suicide on Saturday.

T he golf community was struck by devastating news as Grayson Murray , the talented PGA TOUR player and recent winner of the Sony Open in Hawaii , passed away on Saturday .

He was 30 years old.

Murray's Parents: Life wasn't always easy for Grayson

The tragic news has left fans and fellow players mourning the loss of a bright and promising athlete whose life was marked by both remarkable achievements and profound personal struggles.

Grayson Murray's parents released a heartfelt statement on Sunday , revealing that their son's death was a result of suicide.

They spoke candidly about their grief and the love Grayson received throughout his life:

"We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It's surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It's a nightmare. We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and - it seems - by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed. We would like to thank the PGA TOUR and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now. Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else. Thank you."

Grayson Murray battled challenges on & off the course

Grayson Murray's career in golf began at a young age, marked by significant milestones and impressive victories.

He won three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships from 2006 to 2008 and was the top-ranked golfer in his age group.

His early promise continued with a standout performance on the Korn Ferry Tour , eventually leading to his full status on the PGA TOUR in the 2016-17 season.

His rookie season saw him clinch a victory at the 2017 Barbasol Championship , cementing his place on the tour.

Despite his success, Murray faced challenges both on and off the course.

After a series of struggles, he found his form again in 2023 on the Korn Ferry Tour , securing two victories that earned him a return to the PGA TOUR .

His most recent triumph came at the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii , where he won in a dramatic playoff.

PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan expressed his deep sorrow in a public statement: "We were devastated to learn - and are heartbroken to share - that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words. The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones."

Commissioner Monahan further shared that he had spoken with Murray's parents, Eric and Terry Murray , who insisted that tournament play should continue, believing it to be what Grayson would have wanted.

To support the grieving community, grief counselors were made available at the PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events.

2024 NCAA baseball tournament bracket: College World Series schedule, dates, regional matchups

The road to the college world series in omaha begins friday.

ncaa-trophy.png

On Monday, the selection committee announced the field of 64 for the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament, which we'll unveil in a moment. Before we jump in, you should know that the structure of the NCAA Baseball Tournament is a bit different from the more familiar hoops variant.

Here's what you need to know on that front.

NCAA Baseball Tournament format

  • The first round of play is known as the regional and it's a double-elimination format. Each of the 16 No. 1 seeds hosts its respective four-team regional, when possible. Each of the 16 regionals is seeded one through four. In each region, No. 1 faces No. 4, and No. 2 faces No. 3 on the first day of action. The winners of those two games then play each other, while the losers play an elimination game.
  • The winner of each regional advances to the super regional. The super regional, which includes a total of 16 teams, is a best-of-three series format.
  • The winners of the super regionals -- eight teams in all -- advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
  • The College World Series is a double-elimination format until the final two teams are left standing. At that point, the slates are wiped clean and it's a best-of-three series to determine the national champion.

NCAA Tournament, College World Series dates

  • Regionals : May 31-June 1
  • Super Regionals : June 6-8 or 7-9
  • College World Series starts : June 14
  • College World Series finals : June 22-24

The field of 64 includes eight national seeds, which you may consider the pre-tourney favorites to reach Omaha. Here are this year's eight national seeds:

  • Texas A&M
  • North Carolina
  • Florida State

If a national seed wins its regional, then it hosts the super regional when possible. Otherwise, the sites of the super regionals will be announced after the regional round concludes. Regional play gets underway on Friday, June 2. Now, here are the matchups for all 16 regionals, plus a reminder that each region is seeded one through four and is hosted by one of the 16 national seeds. You'll note that every top-eight seed this year comes from the SEC or ACC.

Now for the regional matchups that make up the opening round.

Athens Regional

Hosted by No. 7 national seed Georgia

  • No. 1 Georgia vs. No. 4 Army
  • No. 2 UNC-Wilmington vs. No. 3 Georgia Tech

Bryan-College Station Regional

Hosted by No. 3 national seed Texas A&M

  • No. 1 Texas A&M vs. No. 4 Grambling
  • No. 2 Louisiana vs. No. 3 Texas

Chapel Hill Regional

Hosted by No. 4 national seed North Carolina.

  • No. 1 North Carolina vs. No. 4 Long Island
  • No. 2 LSU vs. No. 3 Wofford

Charlottesville Regional

Hosted by No. 12 national seed Virginia

  • No. 1 Virginia vs. No. 4 Penn
  • No. 2 Mississippi State vs. No. 4 St. John's

Clemson Regional

Hosted by No. 6 national seed Clemson

  • No. 1 Clemson vs. No. 4 High Point
  • No. 2 Vanderbilt vs. No. 3 Coastal Carolina

Corvallis Regional

Hosted by No. 15 national seed Oregon State

  • No. 1 Oregon State vs. No. 4 Tuland
  • No. 2 UC-Irvine vs. No. 4 Nicholls

Fayetteville Regional

Hosted by No. 5 national seed Arkansas

  • No. 1 Arkansas vs. No. 4 Southeast Missouri State
  • No. 2 Louisiana Tech vs. No. 3 Kansas State

Greenville Regional

Hosted by No. 16 national seed East Carolina

  • No. 1 East Carolina vs. No. 4 Evansville
  • No. 2 Wake Forest vs. No. 3 VCU

Knoxville Regional

Hosted by No. 1 national seed Tennessee

  • No. 1 Tennessee vs. No. 4 Northern Kentucky
  • No. 2 Southern Mississippi vs. No.3 Indiana

Lexington Regional

Hosted by No. 2 national seed Kentucky

  • No. 1 Kentucky vs. No. 4 Western Michigan
  • No. 2 Indiana State vs. No. 3 Illinois

Norman Regional

Hosted by No. 9 national seed Oklahoma

  • No. 1 Oklahoma vs. No. 4 Oral Roberts
  • No. 2 Duke vs. No. 3 UConn

Raleigh Regional

Hosted by No. 10 national seed NC State

  • No. 1 NC State vs. No. 4 Bryant
  • No. 2 South Carolina vs. No. 3 James Madison

Santa Barbara Regional

Hosted by No. 14 national seed UC-Santa Barbara

  • No. 1 UC-Santa Barbara vs. No. 4 Fresno State
  • No. 2 San Diego vs. No. 3 Oregon

Stillwater Regional

Hosted by No. 11 national seed Oklahoma State

  • No. 1 Oklahoma State vs. No. 4 Niagara
  • No. 2 Nebraska vs. No. 3 Florida

Tallahassee Regional

Hosted by No. 8 national seed Florida State

  • No. 1 Florida State vs. No. 4 Stetson
  • No. 2 Alabama vs. No. 3 Central Florida

Tucson Regional

Hosted by No. 13 national seed Arizona

  • No. 1 Arizona vs. No. 4 Grand Canyon
  • No. 2 Dallas Baptist vs. No. 3 West Virginia

Here's a link to NCAA.com's full bracket , which includes region vs. region pairings for the super regionals. Now for some quick hit takeaways on the 64-team field laid out above:

  • It's possible we'll have a repeat this year, as reigning champion LSU is indeed part of the field of 64. College baseball hasn't had a repeat national champion at the Division I level since South Carolina in 2010 and 2011.
  • The SEC this year set an all-time record with 11 tournament teams. Next in line this year is the ACC with eight bids.
  • High Point, Niagara, and Northern Kentucky are all appearing in the Division I tournament for the first time ever.
  • Vanderbilt owns the longest active streak of tournament appearances. This year's bid pushes that streak to 18 straight.

All of the above leads up to the College World Series at Omaha's Charles Schwab Field. So who ya got?

Grayson Murray’s parents said Sunday their 30-year-old son took his own life, just one day after he withdrew from a PGA Tour event. The family asked for privacy and that people honor Murray by being kind to one another.

“If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else,” Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement released by the PGA Tour.

Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, spoke in January after winning the Sony Open in Honolulu about turning the corner in his life, his golf and battles with alcoholism and mental health. He died Saturday morning.

Murray had to go through the Korn Ferry Tour to get his PGA Tour card back. And then he birdied the last hole at the Sony Open to get into a playoff, and made a 40-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole for an emotional win.

“It’s not easy,” Murray said immediately after winning. “I wanted to give up a lot of times. Give up on myself. Give up on the game of golf. Give up on life, at times.”

Murray tied for 43rd last week in the PGA Championship, which enabled him to hold his position among the top 60 to earn a spot in the U.S. Open next month at Pinehurst No. 2 in his native North Carolina.

He shot 68 in the opening round at Colonial. The next round, he was 5 over and coming off three straight bogeys when he withdrew citing an illness.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said he spoke with Murray’s parents about halting play at Colonial and they insisted the golf tournament continue.

Monahan flew to Fort Worth, Texas, to be with players. Many of them wore black-and-red pins on their caps Sunday in honor of Murray. Those are the colors of the Carolina Hurricanes, his favorite NHL team.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare,” his parents shared in their statement.

“We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and — it seems — by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.

“Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”

Grayson was a raw talent after taking up golf at age 8. He won his age division three straight years at the prestigious Junior World Championship in San Diego. But he struggled to fit in at college, going to Wake Forest, East Carolina and then Arizona State.

His first coach was Ted Kiegel in North Carolina, who like so many others was devastated.

“Words cannot express the tragedy of this moment,” Kiegel said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. “Grayson came from something that was ordinary and made it EXTRAORDINARY. ... He burned bright for the 30 years he gave us.”

Murray won as a 22-year-old rookie at the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky, and frustration began to set in as he didn’t improve as quickly as others whom he routinely beat as amateurs.

He was always open about depression and anxiety, and his bouts with alcohol. One of his darker moments was at the Sony Open in 2021 when he was suspended for an incident in a Hawaii bar. Murray took to social media to say, “Why was I drunk? Because I’m a (expletive) alcoholic that hates everything to do with the PGA Tour life and that’s my scapegoat.”

He also accused the tour of not giving him proper help, which the tour denied.

Monahan said Saturday at Colonial that he called Murray right after that posting and subsequently spent a lot of time with him.

“I think one of the elements of his legacy is his resiliency,” Monahan said. “So you think of going back to 2017, winning the Barbasol Championship, going back and forth between the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour. ... self-assessing, coming back, becoming in his own eyes a stronger human being, and then winning three times in the past year.

“To me, that’s a level of resiliency that is extraordinary.”

When he won on the Korn Ferry Tour last year, Murray talked about his parents having “been through hell and back basically for the last six years for me fighting some mental stuff.”

“Everyone has their battles,” Murray said a year ago. “Sometimes people are able to hide them and function, and sometimes you’re not. I think our society now is getting better about accepting that it’s OK to not be OK. I’ve embraced that mentality. I’m not ashamed that I go through depression and anxiety.”

He also used social media to reach out to others dealing with similar issues in a sport where losing takes place far more than winning.

Murray said in January after he won the Sony Open that he often felt like a failure who had wasted his talent.

“It was a bad place, but like I said, you have to have courage,” he said. “You have to have the willingness to keep going. Lo and behold, that’s what I did, and I’m here, and I’m so blessed and I’m thankful.”

He saw that Sony Open victory — which got him into the Masters for the first time — as the start of a new chapter. He said he had become a Christian and was engaged to Christiana Ritchie. He said in January the wedding had been planned for late April.

“My story is not finished. I think it’s just beginning,” Murray said in Hawaii. “I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues.”
