Was will man mehr?

Rockin in the free world

Was will man mehr?

Pearl Jam Announce ‘Dark Matter’ World Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Hours after dropping their new single “Dark Matter,” Pearl Jam have rolled out details of their new LP along with dates for a 35-date world tour, which kicks off May 4 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and wraps November 21 in Sydney, Australia.

Dark Matter will hit shelves on April 19. It was produced by Andrew Watt and recorded over just three weeks at Shangri-La Studios in Malibu, California. The album was unveiled to the public on January 31 during a listening event at the Troubadour in Los Angeles that the band attended.

“I’m getting chills,” Vedder told the crowd, “because I have good memories. We’re still looking for ways to communicate. We’re at this time in our lives when you could do it or you could not do it, but we still care about putting something out there that is meaningful, and we hopefully think is our best work. No hyperbole, I think this is our best work.”

The tour will hit nine countries all across the globe and will ultimately be their longest run of shows in a calendar year since 2009. They’ll be joined by Deep Sea Diver on the first North American leg, Glen Hansard on the second North American leg, the Murder Capitol in Europe and parts of England, Richard Ashcroft in Dublin and London, and Pixies in Australia and New Zealand.

Pearl Jam is a five-piece American rock band from Seattle, Washington. Formed in 1990, the band originally had four members and championed the Seattle sound of grunge and alternative rock. Pearl Jam is considered one of the biggest names in music from the 1990s, especially in the grunge music scene.

In addition to shunning media attention, the band is known for its social activism and outspoken political views. Most notably, the band members were vocally opposed to the 43rd president of the U.S., George W. Bush.

The band is comparable to other grunge bands of the era, with a slightly lighter overall tone more reminiscent of classic rock. Lead singer Eddie Vedder’s distinctive gravelly vocals also set the band apart from many others of the time in terms of sound.

The band has drawn comparisons to The Doors, Nirvana, and The Ramones, and Vedder’s vocals have been compared many times to the iconic Jim Morrison. Vedder cites The Who, Neil Young, and Led Zeppelin as major musical influences on the band.

Pearl Jam still remains iconic in the ’90’s grunge rock scene, with its 1991 debut album, “Ten,” now certified 13 times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The band has remained successful even without the ’90’s grunge backdrop to support them, and since early comparisons to Nirvana, Pearl Jam can now be likened to the Foo Fighters, Radiohead, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Pearl Jam is infamous or famous (depending on whose side you’re on) for pushing back against music industry traditions and the mainstream since the band’s inception. For instance, its members refused to make music videos to promote albums and never gave interviews; the little media engagement they were involved in was regarding a boycott of ticketing giant Ticketmaster in 1994.

Thanks to its unconventional approach to fame and its dedication to lengthy and sprawling tours, Pearl Jam has cultivated an enormous fan following, with some of the more ardent fans being compared to the notoriously dedicated fanbase of the Grateful Dead. To date, the band has released 11 critically-acclaimed and commercially successful albums.

Born out of the band Mother Love Bone after its vocalist Andrew Wood died, the band includes vocalist and frontman Eddie Vedder, guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, and bassist Jeff Ament. The drummer for the band has changed no less than five times, but Matt Cameron (formerly of Soundgarden) has filled the seat since 1998.

Pearl Jam exploded onto the music scene in 1991 with its first album, Ten. The debut album was a huge success and spent an impressive five years on the Billboard Top 200 chart, becoming one of the highest-grossing rock albums of all time. Following the album’s release, the band launched a massive tour to promote it.

The release of its second album, Vs., in 1993 was even more successful. During its first week on the market, the album sold so many copies it set a record for the most copies sold in a single week. Total record sales for that week landed at 950,000.

In 1994, news broke that Ticketmaster was gouging Pearl Jam’s concert goers with excessive service charges. Outraged, Vedder and his bandmates organized an informal boycott of Ticketmaster events. Wanting to connect with their fans more directly and avoid them paying fees to the “outright [greedy]” concert industry, Pearl Jam canceled its 1994 summer tour. It even lodged a formal complaint with the Justice Department claiming that Ticketmaster was an illegal monopoly.

On the heels of the unprecedented success of Vs., the band returned to the studio to produce its third album, Vitalogy. The album initially dropped in November 1994 on vinyl before its official CD release in December. After the CD release, the album became the second-fastest-selling rock record in history, with an astonishing 877,000 copies sold during the first week.

Later that year after the release of its third album, Vitalogy, the band conducted its own tour, playing exclusively non-Ticketmaster venues. It often had to play at very unconventional venues as a result, and their tour crew took practically an entire venue’s worth of equipment and staging everywhere they went.

Despite Pearl Jam’s best efforts in the fight against Ticketmaster, in 1995, the Justice Department in America ceased to investigate the company. The band was left defeated after being “stomped on by a huge corporate entity.” While the loss frustrated the band members, it didn’t slow their production.

In 1996, the next album, No Code, was released. The album is the most unique in terms of sound and is an intentional departure from the band's original sound. The band’s next studio album, Yield, was released in February 1998 and marked its return to its signature sound.

Over the next decade, the band created more highly successful music, securing its position as one of the most successful bands in U.S. music history and becoming a household name by the end of the 1990s. The group created several more albums, experimenting slightly with different musical influences but remaining true to its signature rock sound that made it famous at the onset of its musical career.

The group's extreme popularity diminished some during the early 2000s. In May 2000, the group released its sixth studio album titled Binaural. The album, while still successful, was less of a commercial success than its predecessors. A massive summer tour followed the release of, Binaural. Unfortunately, the tour ended tragically when nine fans were crushed to death when the crowd rushed the stage at the Roskilde Festival while Pearl Jam performed.

The seventh album, Riot Act, dropped in November 2002 to good reviews, but was followed by a lengthy hiatus. The band released its next album, the self-titled Pearl Jam, in May 2006. Backspacer, the group’s ninth album, came next in 2007. Throughout 2009 and 2010, Pearl Jam promoted Backspacer with tours across North America and Europe. Fans had to wait a few years for the tenth album, Lightning Bolt, which came out in 2013.

In 2017, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. By 2018, Pearl Jam was one of the best-selling bands of all time. It boasted nearly 85 million album sales worldwide, with 32 million in the U.S. alone.

Its eleventh and most recent studio album, Gigaton, dropped in 2020.

The band continues to tour and is known as one of the best arena acts of all time. In May 2022, the band announced the forthcoming release of new material. Check out its official website to stay up to date on upcoming Pearl Jam tour dates, tickets, and more.

Live reviews

If you haven't heard of Pearl Jam, they were one of the biggest bands of the 90s and are still wildly popular today. One of the key players in the grunge movement, Pearl Jam features the strong voice of Eddie Vedder. Pearl Jam put on a great show that has the audience on their feet from the opening number until the last encore – they can even drive this middle-aged dad to mosh from time to time!

Pearl Jam perform for almost three hours a night and usually don't have an opening act, so they definitely give the fans their money's worth. These days, Pearl Jam mostly play larger venues and stadium shows, but their performance doesn't need to be masked by special effects, background musicians, and fancy dance routines. They play good honest music with soulful vocals for an eclectic crowd of all ages from fifty-year old soccer moms to teens dressed in black. Intertwined with the music are some lyrics and/or monologues espousing liberal political causes, but I imagine that even a diehard conservative would forgive them once the band got back to the music!

They generally play a mix of fan favorites and b-side songs with some really interesting covers (like "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" by The Beatles, or maybe some Neil Young) added to the mix. The set list can vary quite a bit from date to date, which is good news for anyone planning to attend multiple shows.

This was my 18th Pearl Jam show and it was one of the best!!

Detroit is an amazing place to spend a day or two. Despite everything you hear in the media I felt safe and the people were all super nice. We went to a local bar and met lots of cool people from all over who were attending the Wishlist Foundation pre-party.

This is a charity run by Pearl Jam fans who throw a party before each concert, worldwide. Great vibe and you get to support a number of great causes. I won 3 raffle prizes!! We make our way to the show and even though our seats were int he 200's it did not matter, there was not a bad seat in the place. Much smaller than Toronto, which is nice.

Pearl Jam seems to be in the best place as a band they have ever been in! You can see how happy they all are from the nosebleeds. Always smiling and interacting and joking around.

The set-list was INSANE. It was one of the best I have ever seen and the best on the tour by far......until they went and played "No Code and Yield in their entirety a couple days later.

It was a great show, they are this generations Grateful Dead, every show is different and worth seeing and the vibe and fans and relationship we all have is what makes it special.

I hope you all get to experience it once.

I must admit I hadn't seen Pearl Jam for a few years. I grew up with them, they shaped me. They got me through some bad times and were there for the good times too. But I still didn't know what to expect because, hey, they're a bit older now aren't they? What I didn't expect was to be blown away. Certainly not to the extremes that I was.

Put quite simply that was the best gig I have ever been to. Ever. Without doubt.

34 songs and 3 1/4 hours of pure passion, feeling, emotion and energy. I don't know who enjoyed it more - the crowd or Pearl Jam themselves. It was so clear that they didn't want to leave the stage and we'd all still be there now if Eddie Vedder could have had his way.

The man is a God. Always has been. Always will be. But last night Mike McCready was sublime. Effortless perfection. Simply stunning.

The day after a gig is always a test for me. If I wake up thinking about the gig the gig was good. But today I've been unable to concentrate on anything else. I don't know how I coped before YouTube but it's been my saviour today.

Kids haven't heard of Pearl Jam. They don't know who they are, they don't know what they are. My kids however do. Pearl Jam is in my DNA.

Great show from Pearl Jam last night. 34 songs and almost 3hour non-stop! The sound in Telenor arena is usually average and sometimes poor. This time the sound were overall pretty good. Vocals were actually quite good.

The band entered the stage at 20:15 (they were supposed to enter 20:00), but no big deal. The concert ended 23:10, so almost 3hours of great rock n roll! :) The setlist was a bit different from last time I saw Pearl Jam in Oslo, 2012. Still missing some of my personal favorites: Better man, Black, I am mine, Nothingman, The Fixer. Some of them were playted in 2012, so no big deal.

Fantastic that they played Garden! A girl on front row had been in 22 shows and never heard it. She had a poster with that written on it. PJ actually played it for her, and she cried her happy tears. Magical moment.

Eddie Vedder is music, his presence is unique. Probably the best concert ever in Telenor arena, Oslo. It's difficult to get a good atmosphere and it is hated as a venue amongst musiclovers. It is not built for concerts. Today I forgot that the concert was in Telenor arena, it was a great atmosphere.

Amazing show in Rio de Janeiro @ Maracanã on November 22th 2015.

Perfect vocals from mr. Vedder, the band was very tight with lenghty solos from mr. McReady and a furious and visceral drumming from Mr. Cameron.

This is a great band, definitely worth seeing live. Mixing old classics and a couple of songs from recent releases, the band never ceases to amaze, in my humble opinion. This was my second time seeing PJ live (the first was on their limited tour in 2013 while they were amidst "Lightning Bolt" recording schedule). The band consider their fans as a "large family" as mentioned by mr. Vedder himself last night, and the gig definitely has a "gathering" vibe, specially if you go with your old pals from school, like it was my case.

In addition, mr. Vedder invited a fan to sing the first verse from one of their songs, wore a speedo on top of his clothes throw by a fan (go figure), drank cachaça (local spirit) and made a powerful and very heartfelt tribute to one of the victims from the Paris Attacks.

4 out of 5 stars (I rated "4" since I didn't knew the words from many of their songs).

The bar has just been raised to a new, and I feel unmatchable height in live music!! Pearl Jam were beyond amazing, a truly emotional near 3 and a half hour set which had me in tears of happiness, smiles, singing til my voice gave out! Truly the best gig I have ever been, and with the list I have behind me that's no mean feat!! Pearl Jam I salute you, you took a massive back catalogue and managed to put the perfect set, taking us up through the emotions, songs like Black beautifully pulling at heart strings, and Jeremy causing such a mass singalong that it almost drowns Eddies soul dripping vocals. It's powerful from start to epic finish, and even after nearly 3 and half hours onstage the energy being displayed is that of a band not even half their age. Simply put, after having seen nearly 1500 bands live, Pearl Jam just put each and every one in their place. Epic, breathtaking, words that still can't cover it!!

I've seen Pearl Jam 21 times since 1998 and each and every show was amazing! Of course, there are a few shows that stand out, the main one being the final show at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on Halloween night, 2009. The last show at this historical venue was one of four sold-out shows that week and the fact that it was on Halloween night made it a trifecta of live music awesomeness! They rocked the Spectrum for over 3 and half hours that night…how many other bands out there play shows that long? Many people ask, “How can you go see the same band multiple times on one tour?” Well, Pearl Jam isn’t your average band! No two shows are ever the same, so going to multiple shows is a must, or you might miss one of the rare songs…like when they played “Bugs” at that Spectrum show for the first time EVER! Pearl Jam concerts are the BEST shows…past, present and future!

Great setlist, perfect weather, fitting venue and they guys from Pearl Jam so great, energetic and charismatic as always. They seem to really love to play live for their crowd. Only negative thing was due to se fanatic Ten-Club member group (aparently US-americans, aprox. 20-25 persons) who were very hostile towarda people who approched the front rows, threatening people in group and being very disgusting while appearing to be very "devote" fans. Sasly security didn’t seem to notice or, if they did, didn’t care. That just left a bit of bitterness since it was infuriating to see how they were behaving and being aggresive and trying to intimidate people in a band‘s concert who otherwise represent the whole opposite of that group‘s behavior.

Other than that, it was an awesome, long and unforgettable show.

Tuesday 17th July. The O2, London. Pearl Jam. So here we are at the rescheduled date after the recent cancelled gig in June. I probably said most of what I wanted to say in my review from last month https://garyw66.weebly.com/blog/rockin-in-the-free-world-with-pearl-jam

All that said this time I was down on the floor this time and it certainly added to the atmosphere and you could appreciate the light show too. Making up for the cancelled gig tonight we are treated to a 33 song near three hour set, encore upon encore including some great covers from the likes of Petty, The Who and Dylan.

It’s a breathless night and tonight Pearl Jam only go to confirm that they are one of the great live rock acts around. I don’t need to say anymore. Another great night.

WHAT.A.SHOW.I had high expectations for this show and they delivered at such a level that I couldn't explain. The crowd sang every song lyric, everyone was on their feet during the entire show, people were dancing, bouncing, and having a wonderful time. It had such an old school vibe because there were handful of people using their phones. Young and older audience were all into the show and Pearl Jam's performance. It was beautiful. Their solos were solid. Plus, the show was in Miami and Chris Bosh, Pat Riley, and D-Wade were all in attendance. People who had listened to a few songs by Pearl Jam instantly fell in love. They played a tribute to veterans and a Pink Floyd cover, which I thought was amazing. This will live with me forever.

Pearl Jam’s world tour has a different look. This WA artist designed it

Visual artist Rob Sheridan had been flying under the radar after leaving Los Angeles in 2017 and finding his way back to his hometown of Seattle, working on smaller personal projects and weathering the pandemic by starting a family and a clothing company, Glitch Goods.

He was having a quiet holiday season last December when he got a call: Pearl Jam were hoping Sheridan, who has a close relationship with the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails and designed several of their CD covers and tour visuals, would be interested in designing a visual component to their upcoming tour in support of their latest album, “Dark Matter.”  (The tour includes two nights at Climate Pledge Arena May 28 and 30.)

“I always thought I’d go back [to live visuals] someday if it was the right creative connection, the right artist,” Sheridan said from his hotel room last Thursday in Las Vegas, where the band was set to play that night. “Aside from [Pearl Jam] being legends, I grew up in Seattle. They’re part of my DNA.”

  • 7 top music stars playing the Seattle area this spring
  • Top 20 outdoor concerts in WA this summer

The only catch was the tour was just months away from kicking off and Sheridan would have to get to work immediately.

“Ed [Vedder] and I really hit it off and had a creative synergy, which was exactly what I was hoping for and I could tell what the band was hoping for,” said Sheridan, who now lives in Tacoma. “It was right around Christmas and everything was chaotic. All of a sudden, it’s like, ‘I guess I’m doing visuals for Pearl Jam now.’ ”

Pearl Jam’s longtime lighting director Kille Knobel and production designer Spike Brandt were looking to switch up Pearl Jam’s live presentation — which had always been known for being stripped down or even austere by today’s flashy standard — without going overboard.

A lot of modern trappings like huge LED screens and holoprojectors simply didn’t make sense for a band like Pearl Jam and risked coming off as inauthentic.

“All of that just felt like the wrong thing to me for Pearl Jam,” Sheridan said. “Pearl Jam isn’t a bright, cold LED screen; it’s a warm, incandescent light. We talked about, ‘What if we did this with a really analog feel?’ What if we used a projection screen, and some ways to help bring the visuals into the space with the band but not be fighting for attention with what is one of the greatest live bands, in terms of musical performances, of our generation.”

Sheridan settled on a 155-foot-by-35-foot projector screen, bigger than the iconic Cinerama (now SIFF Cinema Downtown) screen, which measures about 90 feet by 32 feet. He and his wife and business partner, Stephanie, set up a “lab” of sorts using a high-speed camera called an Ember, developed by Freefly Systems in Woodinville.

The camera allowed them to capture chemical reactions and light interactions at 1,000 frames per second and was easy enough to use that it encouraged experimentation, enough to fill more than 50 terabytes of hard drive space over two months of intense work.

“The band was very into this idea of setting up a lab with a very lean team and just playing with where these thoughts and ideas and experiments took us,” Sheridan said.

The resulting imagery evokes everything from microbiology to outer space, fitting for an album called “Dark Matter,” which references the invisible substance in outer space that binds the galaxy together.

“When you’re looking at it all at 1,000 frames a second and through a macro lens, it’s like two layers of things you can’t see with the human eye,” Sheridan said. “At that scale and at that speed, you start to see water starts to look like smoke, starts to look like fire — you start to see all the interconnected similarities. And that’s the theme of Pearl Jam … their shows are very communal.”

7:30 p.m. May 28 and 30; Climate Pledge Arena, 334 First Ave. N., Seattle; limited tickets remain starting at $182.53 through Pearl Jam and Ticketmaster’s face value exchange;  ticketmaster.com

Pearl Jam

On the second night of a two-night stint at Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif., on Wednesday (May 22), Pearl Jam brought the energy with a powerful, no-frills rock show that delivered on the hits.

Eddie Vedder Slams Harrison Butker During Pearl Jam Concert: Watch

Trending on billboard.

That was far from the only tribute paid by the band on Wednesday, bringing a melancholy undercurrent to the roughly two-and-a-half-hour set. At one point during the evening, Vedder also paid homage to a host of iconic rock drummers who have died within the last several years. “A couple of years ago, just randomly, some of the greatest of all time, we lost,” said Vedder, who rattled off the names of Foo Fighters ’ Taylor Hawkins , The Rolling Stones ’ Charlie Watts and Rush ’s Neil Peart before segueing into a performance of Dark Matter ‘s title track.

Though new tracks from Dark Matter were sprinkled liberally throughout the performance — including “Wreckage,” “React, Respond” and show-closer “Setting Sun” — Wednesday night’s set understandably leaned heavily into the first decade of Pearl Jam’s career, when the band was at its commercial peak.

Of those early albums, the muscular Ten received a particularly bright spotlight, with Vedder and company busting out renditions of “Even Flow,” “Black,” “Alive” and fan favorite “Jeremy,” which the band performed off the back of the propulsive Yield standout “Do the Evolution” during an extensive encore. Another highlight on Wednesday included the band’s performance of Vitalogy cut “Nothingman,” which served as a particularly potent showcase of Vedder’s still remarkable voice, which retains its clarity and power to move more than three decades on.

The night’s most rousing moment arrived with the second-to-last song, a cover of Neil Young ’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” which boasted special guest appearances from Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith (who Vedder had noted was in the house earlier in the evening); Dark Matter producer Andrew Watt on guitar; and the members of Deep Sea Diver , the Seattle-based indie rock outfit that’s serving as the opening act on the first North American leg of the tour. During the extended performance, the band managed to turn the Forum into a full-on dance party, with Vedder flinging tambourines with abandon into the eager hands of the satiated crowd.

Full setlist:

  • “Long Road”
  • “Nothingman”
  • “Present Tense”
  • “Go”
  • “Scared of Fear”

Watch Sting begin 2024 tour in Germany with Police hits and deep cuts

The rock veteran kicked off his ‘Sting 3.0’ tour by unearthing songs not performed in decades

Sting 2024 concert performance

Sting has kicked off his ‘Sting 3.0’ tour – which sees him performing in a trio set-up across Europe and the US. The rock veteran performed its first date in Dresden, Germany at the Dresdner Musikfestspiele.

  • READ MORE: In praise of ‘The Traitors’ and its terribly brilliant cover songs

The ‘Sting 3.0’ tour features Sting performing alongside guitarist and longtime collaborator Dominic Miller and drummer Chris Maas, the latter previously serving as touring drummer for Mumford & Sons .

In Dresden on May 25, the setlist consisted of an almost even split between solo material and songs written and performed with the Police . It began with his former band’s ‘Voice Inside My Head’, performing it for the first time since 2006, as Consequence notes.

Other songs that made a comeback into Sting’s live repertoire include the Police’s ‘Synchronicity II’ (since 2018) and ‘Tea in the Sahara’ (since 2017), along with Sting’s own ‘When the Angels Fall’ (since 1992) and ‘Never Coming Home’ (since 2012).

Alongside these deep cuts were fan favourites like ‘Roxanne’, ‘Desert Rose’, ‘Fields of Gold’, and ‘Every Breath You Take’. See fan footage of that night, along with Sting’s forthcoming tour dates below.

After 3 show cancellations (Vienna, Prague, and Amsterdam 1) due to Ed’s vocal trouble after the Paris show, Pearl Jam returns to the stage to finish the European leg of the tour. The front row has balloons to welcome the band back, and the crowd starts the “Ed-die” chant as they take the stage. The band is seated for the first few songs, Ed says they’ve had a lot of different shows but “this show will be different.” Nothing As It Seems opens for the first time since 2000 and there’s a loud cheer when Ed starts to sing. Afterward, he greets the audience:

“Good evening…it sure is nice to be able to say those words…we were not gonna leave this part of the world without playing one more show.”

Off He Goes is a request, with the lyric changed to “…riding on a motorbike in Amsterdam…” Ed thanks his doctor, Dr. Marco Franken, telling the crowd he had no voice even as of the day before, and pictures of him in the doctor’s office are shown on the screens. Alright makes its European debut, only the 3rd performance. Ed says they’re going to play another request, from 4 years ago, that they’ve never done in Europe before (it had been played there only once in full, in Rotterdam in 1993), and the drums kick in for W.M.A. Mike thrashes around the stage, focused and intense, and Josh and Matt combine for a rhythmic pummeling. The crowd sings along to every word of Why Go and Even Flow, doing their best to help Ed. The line in Corduroy is “…absolutely everything’s changed…” No vocals on the Waiting on a Friend tag this time. Hard To Imagine is another request, with Josh and Ed making it a four-guitar attack. Ed keeps playing for a minute right before the band usually kicks in on Better Man, stepping to the microphone and saying

…after tonight I don’t have to sing for a whole fucking month…so I can do as much damage as I want” [laughs]

Mike sings the first verse of Black Diamond before Matt takes over. The improv before Porch is Ed solo, and has the lines “I love this life” repeated over and over, then he switches to “I love your life” a couple of times before going back to “I love this life” and then transitioning right into Porch. Mike and Ed kneel at the front of the stage for a minute during the jam, Mike wailing away and Ed building up the crowd. After the break, he has the shiny jacket on and talks about how Jeff heard him warming up in the hotel and thought “oh no, we’re fucked,” but it looks like they’re going to make it. He thanks the crowd, saying that part of the voice problem was climate change, France and Spain on fire, and says

“I really hope that we meet the challenge of climate change a lot better than we met the challenge of COVID, I tell you that…we have the power to come together as human beings to save our planet, which is a selfish endeavor, but we can do it. But I think we just can’t wait for fucking politicians to do it, because they’re just going to do what the businessmen ask them to, pay them to…there’s more of us than them, and nights when you see people gathered like this…and sing as one, and be as one, and agree on one thing, it gives you faith…and we’re so fortunate we get to travel the world and give faith in humanity, and we thank YOU for that.”

He continues, thanking the entire crew and bringing them all out on stage. Josh comes to the front of the stage and starts Purple Rain, Mike nails the long solo as the crowd sings the background vocal part. Ed has a Ukrainian flag as Indifference starts and puts it on the monitor, then changes his mind and picks it back up. Mike smashes his guitar during RITFW, slamming it into his amp, then jokingly attempting to strum the pieces one last time before tossing it aside, while on the other side of the stage some kids are playing tambourines. Ed leaves the crowd with “…going home…gonna miss you…”

Why Go kicks off a blistering start, a tag-less Daughter indicating that they’re going to try and keep things tight. Lots of little changes tonight, Ed adds the “…absolutely everything’s changed” line in Corduroy, and changes the line to “…can’t buy what I want because it’s clean air, man…” Lots of call and response during the bridge, with mixed participation from the crowd. Continuing the let’s-play-a-super-rare-one streak, Satan’s Bed appears for only the 39th time in 28 years! Ed is being very emotive, it sounds great and well-rehearsed. As Mike starts the Even Flow solo, Ed exhorts “Red rover, Mister McCready take over!” After the line “…every tomorrow is the same as before…” in Dance of the Clairvoyants, he yells “…fuck you COVID!” Wishlist line is changed to the geographically dubious “…wish I lived in a country as fortunate as…Paris” (pronounced Par-EE). Not For You is a standout performance, Stone has an outstanding night at this show, stabbing the air with his guitar during Jeremy and dancing and strutting around the stage during Evolution. Go finally returns to the set for the first time since 2018. Long main set means a short encore, only 2 songs. Mike’s Alive solo is loose and relaxed, Jeff and Stone have a moment jamming together and then Jeff goes to the side of the stage with Ed and plays for the crowd there. The crowd is projected on the screen behind the band live during Baba, people with flags from Mexico, Chile, and Portugal are seen.

This show, only a few hundred miles away from the Ukrainian border, is heavily tinged with the shadow of that war. Mike is once again masked up for the entire show. Ed gets into Sometimes, nearly screaming the final lines. Porch is a surprise early, away from its usual main set-ending slot. Ed takes a moment after to speak about what’s on his mind:

We will not play a place as important on the world stage as the place that we play tonight…to be invited to play a place, you know, the proximity to this conflict, it’s difficult to find words, except for the war in Ukraine is a gigantic fucking tragedy for the entire planet.

He continues, telling Putin to fuck off, before continuing on an incredible run of songs, some of their most powerful and impactful songs in the catalog, including Quick Escape, which keeps getting better and better. The breakdown at the end rivals anything they’ve done in the past, it’s mesmerizing. Paired with Dissident, they make for an “escape” themed duo, no doubt with Ukrainian refugees in mind. Ed asks the crowd to step back after Buckle Up, as there is no barricade in front of the crowd. Mike is searing on Even Flow, letting note after note wail as Ed walks behind the stage and greets the crowd there. Unthought Known transitions right into Once. Who Ever Said returns, for the first time in Europe, along with the Devo-style “Satisfaction” tag. Ed says they’re going to take a request, and they play a stellar version of Hard To Imagine, the first time it’s been played since the Third Man Records show in 2016! To end the main set, Rearviewmirror finally returns, the first time in 13 shows! Ed drops out on the “…once you…” lines, letting the crowd take the big scream, picking it back up in the middle of the last verse. After the break, Ed thanks the crowd, saying:

…especially, the last couple of years, we couldn’t even, you know, the dream that had been a reality for us for decades was no longer a reality, and we didn’t get to commune with other people, we didn’t get to gather in large groups, and as much as I thought I wouldn’t miss it, or we wouldn’t miss it…we’ve been so fortunate already, I wouldn’t want to be greedy about it, but man, as soon as we weren’t allowed to do it, it seemed like something so very important, and we’re so grateful to be in a room like this, in a place like this, country like this, all together…

He goes on to thank numerous local organizations and people who’ve been on the front lines in the Ukrainian relief effort, pointing out while reading names that they’re all women, and Better Man is introduced with the line “…can’t find a better woman.” Ed improvs some lines during the tag, “if you need me…if you need me…I will be there for you, I promise you…because someday I might need you too…” Small Town is played to the back of the arena. Prior to River Cross, Ed says “this is a song about borders…wishing there weren’t borders.” A Ukrainian flag makes its way on stage before RITFW and Ed drapes himself in it. The longest encore of the tour so far. After introducing the band (including himself as “the guy who drank the most wine on stage tonight”), Ed adds:

…alright, look…hopefully we’ll get to do this again very soon, but in the in-between, every day is critical, we’ll be thinking about you…this part of the country, this part of the planet, of course with this kind of memory in our hearts, in our minds, we’re gonna be thinking positive things, you’ll have our support as well…the planet is grateful. We love you.”

He lingers on stage for a few extra moments after the band leaves, waving and acknowledging people in the crowd, as a chant of “Ed-die, Ed-die…” begins, bringing the show to a close.

The first few alternate between deep cuts and fan favorites, Brain of J. rips, Ed leads the crowd clapping during the bridge and Stone is spotlighted on stage during the solo. Ed has the mirrored guitar out for ½ Full and reflects the spotlight into the crowd. Mike has a mask on and plays the whole show with it, hopefully just a precautionary measure. Before Nothingman, Ed sees someone with a sign hoping to hear Sad for their birthday and says “I think that’s so sad, we should play something happy…well, this is a bit of a sad one,” and during the song, acknowledging the crowd reaction, adds “…we sing it together, it’s not so sad!” Following Quick Escape, he thanks the crowd, saying “after all these years, we are deeply honored to be in this room with y’all tonight.” Black includes a line from “MacArthur Park” repeated in the tag, “…we’ll never have that recipe again…” Ed surprises everyone by playing through Lukin slow, accompanied only minimally by Matt, before kicking in to the fast version, one of the few times that’s ever been done and the first in a long time! Ed growls the “…into the house…of Mary…” line in Crazy Mary, and Boom solos for nearly 3 minutes without any competition from Mike. Someone in the crowd hands Ed a rainbow “BUDA FCKN PEST” shirt. No songs from Vs. are played, the first time that’s happened at a full Pearl Jam show since June 26, 2003!

After Small Town, Ed says that they’ll try to play everything that they didn’t play last night. Someone passes out in the crowd due to the heat after Deep and there’s a short break while they are attended to. The Waiting On A Friend tag is extended, with lyrics. Following Garden, Ed gets very passionate talking about the recent active shooter alert incident with his wife and daughter in New York:

…it was a firework that went off in the crowd. And for other people to have these ‘freedoms’, of having a fuckin’ firearm…we’re giving up the freedom to walk out in the streets, to send our kids to school, to go to the movies, the library, the grocery store…

and continues, referencing the Highland Park shooting where a girl saw her mother get shot and had to run away to safety, pleading to address gun violence, adding

…if anyone doesn’t have empathy, or respect for the sanctity of life, their own and others, even their own…if they don’t have that, then that’s exactly the person that we DON’T want to have with a firearm in their possession…

Johnny Marr is brought on stage and takes the solo on an extended, epic version of Throw Your Hatred Down. Ed gives a nod to Josh after Dance of the Clairvoyants, saying he’s “elevated the intellect of the band.” During the songs when Josh isn’t playing, he has a camera and is taking pictures. Ed lets the crowd vote on whether Whipping or Not For You should be played next, and Not For You wins. Rats is another total surprise. Black has to be restarted, Stone had the wrong guitar. The first 16 songs of the set were not played the previous night, Porch ends the set and breaks the streak, still no sign of RVM anywhere. After the break, Ed dedicates River Cross to the people fighting for Ukraine. Johnny Marr returns for Baba, along with Andrew Watt, to close the show. Baba is extended, everyone on stage having a great time. The show closes with the crowd chanting “one more song, one more song…”

As the crowd sings along to the walk out music, the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love”, the band takes the stage and Ed conducts the singalong for a minute before starting Better Man, the first time it’s opened a proper Pearl Jam show since 2007! He takes a moment to speak after, saying “Fuck! It’s beautiful here…love what you’ve done with the place,” and thanking White Reaper, Cat Power, and the Pixies, adding that when he and Jeff were in England while mixing Ten, they had gone to a record store in Camden and bought bootlegs, including the Pixies live at Brixton. There are 3 huge screens behind the band, leading to some incredible visuals during the show. Breath is a total surprise early in the set, making its 2022 debut. Ed says that the person who Save You was written for has not been saved yet, and that he thinks about them every time they play the song. Quick Escape returns to the set for the first time since Werchter, and as the song is winding down they pick up the pace and kick in to a little of the Sex Pistols’ “God Save The Queen”, with Ed repeating “no future…no future…” In Hiding is played by request. Light Years is played for a fan named Donna, who had recently passed away at a young age, and her picture is shown on the screens at the end of the song. Ed talks about lies after Even Flow, mentioning Trump, COVID, and social media. He forgets some lyrics to Unthought Known. The crowd is very into the Ten songs, and after the first performance of Public Image since 2014, Once and Porch end the main set on a high note. After the break, Ed brings out Simon Townshend and they play Simon’s “I’m the Answer” acoustic. Jeff comes back wearing the hybrid Pixies/stickman shirt. Tennis legend John McEnroe joins to play guitar on Rockin’ in the Free World. A memorable show, with 9 of the 11 albums represented.

Release opens in the dark, the stage bathed in blue light. Ed lets the crowd take it during Animal. Retrograde pops up again for the first time since Berlin. Another intense W.M.A. tag, Jeff is playing the actual W.M.A. bassline, Josh is helping out on extra percussion, and the guitars have a little extra bite to them. As it seems to be winding down, Ed goes on a rant:

If a parent makes a mistake, that’s okay…a man makes a mistake and it’s okay, a white American man makes a mistake and it’s okay, he’ll live his life the way he wants anyway, white man American, yea, it’s okay. Personally…since they make up half of our country, I say the women need their power, the women need their power too, ‘cause we should all be able to make a FUCKING MISTAKE…government get your hands off the women’s bodies, government get your hands out of their fuckin’ vaginas, let them have the power to make their own decisions about their own bodies and their own futures and their own minds, because we need them on the planet to make this a fuckin’ better world…

Never Destination is very energetic, Jeff and Matt especially; a great, driving rhythm. Ed thanks the crew and says longtime crew member George Webb is out with COVID, one of the first shows he’s missed since the band started. Someone in the front row has a sign for Inside Job, and Ed sees it and takes the request. Following DTE, a girl has a sign for Black which is also then acknowledged and played. Afterwards, Ed is strumming a guitar at the front of the stage and asks for a bright spotlight on him to be turned off, then asks for all the lights to be turned off and the crowd to bring up their lights, and takes a deep breath before continuing:

Jeff went out to the memorial at Roskilde today and saw the trees, and you know that was a day that changed so many people’s lives, and we kind of remember…there’s like our lives before that, and then there’s our lives after, and that day, in so many ways, colored our humanity, our compassion, our empathy, our sadness, and since that time a lot of us have gone on to have children, so now, even more than back then, we understand the depth of loss [Ed starts to break down in tears] and we’ll always be so sorry for the tragic events that took place…and we just want to say how grateful we’ve been to some of the families that we’ve been able to be in contact with and to share our lives with, and share their futures, and we’ve become friends and we’ve witnessed grandchildren in their lives, and their accepting of us as people has meant as much as anything in our whole lives, [Ed starts to break down again] because for everyone involved, it was just the most traumatic day, so we’re thinking about ‘em, which is not unusual, but thank you…for still being here when we come back, and again, it never stops, but I don’t get the chance to say it, on behalf of all of us, and all of our crew, I just want to send all of our love, and appreciation, and gratitude, and sorrow, to all those families…

Which leads right into a powerful performance of Love Boat Captain, Ed is visibly emotional during the entire song. After the break, he comes back out holding a guitar again and thanks the crowd, adding:

I’m fortunate that we get to play, you know, there was a chance that, out of respect…because there was a tragic occurrence that happened not far from here two days ago, and there’s just one quick thing I want to say, you are so doing the right thing here, it’s impossible to, you know… there’s somebody back home, there was someone who said one of the most ignorant things I’ve ever heard, and they said ‘you know, you see what happened in Denmark, that even when you have the strictest gun laws possible, it still happens’ but you know what, the fact that they can say that when you’ve had 2 incidents in HISTORY, in your history, of what they call mass shootings, so obviously it’s the right thing to do, compared to say, back in our country, where we’ve had 300 THIS YEAR, and it’s early July…so the fact that someone could be so ignorant and idiotic to say such a thing…and not only that, this person is somebody in US government, that is fucking reprehensible.

Ed does a short “Don’t Dream It’s Over” intro to Better Man. During Alive, Ed kneels on the stage and lets the crowd sing the chorus at him, and the song ends with Ed balancing the mic stand upside down in his hand before slamming it down on the stage. Someone from IDLES is brought on stage during RITFW to play tambourine and sing backups.

Ed asks the crowd to “fill the sky with your voice!” during Small Town. No tag on Daughter this early in the set. Mike starts the Even Flow solo behind his head, it’s playful and loose, then dissonant at the very end. There was a shooting in Copenhagen (the next stop on the tour) in the afternoon, no doubt leading to Glorified G here. After the “…do you see the way that tree bends…” line in Present Tense, Ed points to his left and adds “that way”. Take The Long Way returns to the set for the first time in Europe. Mike has a very good, searing solo in Why Go. The Eruption solo leads right into Porch. Following a short We Belong Together tag on Black, Ed improvs “n-n-n-n-n-no, no, no” a few times, then adds “…should have known, should have known…” Given to Fly is a nice addition to the encore. There’s a video screen behind the band, and during Ledbetter the band is projected on multiple levels going up like a pyramid, a very cool effect. Afterwards, they say their goodbyes and take the collective bow, then Ed gives the “one more” sign and they put the guitars back on for Rockin’. Ed closes out the evening with “take care of each other, take care of yourselves, until next time…”

The band takes the stage without Ed and starts Inside Job, the first time it’s opened a show since 2006. Ed enters just before the vocals start to huge applause. No double guitar for Mike, Stone actually takes a lot of the early leads. After Last Exit, Ed jokes with the crowd in German. Fatal is a MASSIVE surprise, played by request for Regina. It’s an electric, not acoustic, version, sparse, with a little staccato rhythm. Ed has a “Free Ukraine” sign that he holds up after Garden. Buckle Up transitions nicely into Better Man. Ed has the mirrored guitar for Porch and reflects light all across the upper level of the arena. After the break, Ed sits at the pump organ:

I wonder, if we didn’t read the news in the morning…I wonder if we’d live better lives, I wonder if we wouldn’t get so upset to read about what just happened back home in the United States, where they’ve just taken women’s rights and the ability to plan for their future [mixed crowd reactions], I wonder if we wouldn’t be…disgusted by the gun violence that happens every day back home in our country, it’s so frustrating, harrowing, sad, sickening to be honest…if we just woke up and came and did this and was around you people like tonight, it would be the greatest life in the world, but if we did that, or if we were even tempted to do that, we would be ignoring some of the issues that our fellow humans are going through, and it’s very important to be aware and it’s very important to be active and it’s very important to send your energies to the people who need them, because you never know when you’re going to be the one who needs other people’s energies…

The crowd is nearly completely silent during the beginning of River Cross, seemingly transfixed by the performance. During the last verse, the guitars start to take over and get heavier, and Ed gets up from the organ and goes to the microphone, encouraging the crowd to get involved. The lights go down and everyone has their phone lights on. During Alive, someone in the crowd has a sunflower and hands it to Ed. Mike starts his solo and then halfway through, takes off his guitar and hands it to Josh, who finishes the solo in fine fashion while Mike walks around the stage, thanking the crowd and throwing out picks. Indifference closes the show for the first time since LA II. Jeff is draped in a Ukrainian flag after the show. A great setlist in a beautiful arena.

This is a Mike McCready show from the jump as Corduroy, Even Flow and Why Go all have mind blowing solos, but Mike shreds with his teeth during Even Flow. Ed addresses the crowd in his broken Italian dialect, and has a little fun with them by changing up his accent. Dance of the Clairvoyants is an infectious groove, Stone’s bass is loud and prominent in the beginning. MFC is played back in the country where its origin story began. Crowd is active during Jeremy as Ed has them take the outro for themselves. Come Back is a dedication to Luca, who wrote a letter to Ed sharing that he had recently lost his hero, his brother. It’s the first appearance of a song from the Pearl Jam record in 2022. Another album that makes its debut on this tour is Riot Act as Save You is a welcome surprise. Ed addresses the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade prior to Wishlist, and the theme will get brought up again shortly after. Ed notices some trouble in the crowd prior to Seven O’Clock, and has a young girl pulled out and brought to safety. The song needs to be paused early on due to a commotion in the crowd. When the song breaks back in, Ed channels some anger and animosity while delivering the ‘sitting bullshit’ line, perhaps channeling his frustration with the Roe v. Wade decision. He mentioned it again before Daughter, stating that there are 55 countries that allow women to control their own bodies, today the United States is not one of them. Having a child is wonderful, but it needs to be loved and wanted. In 100% of unwanted pregnancies, the man is responsible. Think about that. Daughter includes a haunting W.M.A. tag where the lyrics are changed to fit the current situation:

She won the lottery… when she was born…

politicians got my daughter again…

Following the W.M.A. tag, we get a quick snippet of People Have The Power. After the chilling performance, Ed lightens the mood and talks about driving a Ferrari back in San Diego when he was working as a security guard. Mike ends off the main set in a big way pulling out another insane performance during Porch. When they return for the encore break, Ed spots another situation in the crowd and holds off until it gets resolved. Black is a powerful performance where the spotlight once again shines on Mike. Towards the end of the song, he attempts to get one of his guitar pedals to work. After a few tries, he starts smashing the body of his guitar into his pedal board creating a remarkably artful sound. He walks away visibly frustrated, dragging his guitar by his side. Better Man is followed by a trio of tags, beginning with Tom Petty’s American Girl which had never been used at a Pearl Jam show before. Ed recites a few lyrics of Beast of Burden which hadn’t been tagged since 2006. Save It For Later caps off the trio. Excluding pre-sets, this is the first show in 2022 without a cover since Phoenix.

Special thanks to Luke Dalley for relaying this setlist!

Release opens, ending the streak of unique openers at 15. Before the show, pen and paper was passed around the front row looking for requests, just like in LA on the west coast leg. Matt destroys the ending of Immortality, prompting Ed to talk about all the drummers that we’ve lost, including Charlie Watts and Taylor Hawkins, and says they love Matt so much and they’re glad he’s back. Band is tight and Ed sounds great, much improved over Berlin. Ed holds the mic out to the crowd during Quick Escape, which has a long, extended ending with Mike going absolutely out of this world on the solo. Ed talks about how they played Zurich exactly 22 years ago, and he met his wife the night before that show, in Milan, and now there’s “a lot of daughters…women of the world are gonna take over,” leading into…Daughter. After the W.M.A. tag, the guitars get a little funkier and crunchier, and Ed starts into Leash, getting into it, almost screaming the lyrics, and then the tag ends with “…glorified version of a pellet gun…” repeated quietly. Near the end of Animal, Ed stops the song and calls out a woman in the crowd who he saw hit the person in front of them in the back of the head, saying “violence is not allowed…you’re outta here…” and the song is resumed. In Hiding is brought back for the first time since 2018, a welcome surprise. The crowd continues singing during Jeff’s bass outro on Jeremy, Ed joins in and they keep it going until the song finishes. After Smile, Ed says they’ve seen a lot of people traveling between shows and wanted to thank them somehow, he takes the sheet of paper with the requests, looks it over, says “we aren’t going to play any of these tonight,” but hints that they’ll see what they can do over the next few shows. Mike’s Black solo is stellar, Ed acknowledges him afterwards and adds a short improv with the lyrics “…all the pain, and misery, hopelessness, darkest paths…” A Ten-heavy night, with Superblood Wolfmoon, River Cross, State of Love and Trust, Better Man, and Yellow Ledbetter/Indifference all cut from the original list.

The streak of different openers extends to 15 with Why Go. Deep is an early surprise, and a long version of Untitled prefaces MFC. Ed’s pump organ is on stage, but goes unused. Low Light appears again, on this, the summer solstice. Retrograde has a stellar ending. Mike finishes the Even Flow solo down in the front row of the crowd. Amongst the Waves is played by request for a couple who’s been together for 25 years, they met when they were 12, and Ed points out that Jeff and Stone have been playing music together for 39 years, Stone was 12 and Jeff was 15 when they met, that’s why Jeff plays bass because he had the balls, joking that he’s never seen Jeff’s balls but Stone probably has. Corduroy has the new intro again, and transitions seamlessly into Not For You. There’s a crowd surfer as Nothingman starts, and Ed admonishes him, saying “it’s not the right song” and imploring everyone to be safe and to jump up and down instead, “or at least go that way,” pointing to the back of the crowd. Prior to Porch, a fan named Roland is brought on stage with his wife and daughter, he had contracted ALS since he got tickets for the show back in 2020 and there was a fan campaign to get him connected with the band. Street Fighting Man returns for an encore performance, and there’s some confusion during Ledbetter, Ed tells Mike to cut it short and after only a minute and a half, instead of going into the chorus of Ledbetter, Mike starts the Alive riff.

Pearl Jam returns to the stage as a complete unit to kick off the European leg of the tour, Matt and Jeff having both recovered from the COVID diagnosis that forced the cancellation of the final two dates of the west coast leg. Even Flow opens a show for the first time since 2000, the 14th different opener in the last 14 shows! Ed mentions that it’s the 30 year (and 10 day) anniversary of their iconic 1992 performance there, and Why Go follows, just like it did back then. Josh and Boom join for Low Light, the piano taking a prominent role during the quiet part. Ed fumbles the lyrics to Wishlist, adding “…I wish I was in Amsterdam and was able to find a rhyme…” Given To Fly soars in all the right places. Ed plays a little bit of Crowded House’s hit “Don’t Dream It’s Over” as an intro to Better Man, they had played earlier in the day. He mentions that they had to leave their families at home this time because of “the bubble,” keeping COVID risk to a minimum. He then tells the story of the camera operator, Rob, from 1992 and his stagedive while footage of it plays on the screens behind him. Rob is brought out on stage and speaks to the crowd, saying “Eddie Vedder is the nicest artist I know.” Porch is slower than usual, the bridge has a spacey, effects-heavy feel to it. Comfortably Numb is the 2nd Pink Floyd reference of the night, fitting for the festival, and the Rolling Stones’ “Street Fighting Man” is dusted off for the first time since Memphis 1994, a whopping 737 show absence! Seven O’Clock and Not For You are on the setlist but not played.

Make-up show for the 6/19 postponement due to Ed losing his voice. The band announced the cancellation on their site, saying “singer Eddie Vedder has completely lost his voice and is on vocal rest for the next few days,” and “It’s the first time ever having to postpone a show for this reason. Ed and the band are gutted thinking of all the folks who have travelled and made plans.” The rescheduled date was announced a week later, thus becoming the final show of the European leg. After “Do the Evolution,” Ed asks for the house lights to come up so he can see everyone, and says they are going to play like there’s no tomorrow, but reminds the audience to go crazy, but not to be dangerous to anyone around them. He then addresses the cancellation: “I’d like to say something quickly before we continue because it’s been weighing on my mind for about 3 and half weeks since we were last here. I’d just like to send out my deepest apologies and my deepest thanks and it all goes to the same people, which is all of you out there and everyone in this group. I never really had that happen before and so it broke my heart and having a busted throat and a broken heart at the same time was really a nightmare of an experience. If it wasn’t for the energy I got from these guys, our crew and also our audience I don’t know if I… it was everything as far as coming back and making a recovery. For all the people who had to change their plans, and I know some of these familiar faces, you had to make some big changes, I’m so grateful, I’m so sorry and I’m so thankful to everyone…I deeply appreciate it and I look forward to paying you back all night. And so in the immortal words of Marvin Gaye, ‘Let’s get it on.’”

Following “Green Disease,” Ed introduces Peter, “a hometown member of the crew” from Cornwall, and jokingly asks how he can work for them and live in Cornwall. After Evenflow, Ed asks the crowd to cheer for Mike McCready and tells how the band almost lost him to a job in Los Angeles, essentially giving facelifts “like newborn babies” to women through his guitar playing, but leaving them unable to hear the compliments. He then mentions some of his favorite protest signs, including, “God save the queen from the rotten tangerine.” He continues, “my daughters aren’t here tonight because otherwise I’m going to say a couple words that they’ve never heard me say before, and if they were here they’d say, ‘fuck you dad, we’ve heard the records,’ I’d call Trump a twat but he lacks depth and warmth.’ But perhaps the most important as we go into the next song, ‘a girl’s place is in the resistance.’ So women of the world, please take over,” leading into Daughter. Before Mankind, Ed teases Stone and Jeff: “the people have spoken and they want to hear…Sweet Lew…they would like to say, let Stone sing, ladies and gentlemen, Stone Gossard!”  Stone thanks Ed for “carrying us all these years, leading this organization and inspiring us all, so EV thanks a lot we really appreciate it as a band collectively but it’s about fucking time you let me sing goddamnit.” Mankind inevitably breaks down towards the end, to which Stone quips, “OK, I guess that’s the reason he doesn’t let me sing, it makes sense.” This leads to a “Let Jeff sing” chant, prompting Ed to say “Jeff shall not be singing tonight,” resulting in a disappointed crowd. Jeff pops in with “I have a sore throat,” then Ed responds playfully “you fucking asshole, that’s a dig at me isn’t it?” Fatal is a rare treat, only the 7th performance ever. Ed dedicates Around the Bend to a group of people who had been to “so many shows, I feel like they have been to more than I have.” After Breath, Ed recognizes the birthday of Sam (band chef) and Stone’s birthday in 3 days. A cake is brought out and promptly smashed into Stone’s face, seeming to cause a bit of an eye issue, to which Ed remarks, “Getting old is a bitch.” During “Crazy Mary,” there does seem to be continuing concern about Stone’s eye, as he and Jeff get together during Mike and Boom’s jam. Ed talks about playing at Borderline, amongst other smaller clubs in the early days, leading into Small Town. Prior to Wasted Reprise, Ed thanks the crowd again: “Really it is you…if it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t be doing this thing. We’d still be close and hang out but if it weren’t for you providing the opportunity, the energy, the dedication, and the support from your side…it’s really been everything to us. So thank you, thank you, thank you.” The band leaves the stage after Yellow Ledbetter as some of the audience begins to file out, but they regroup for an impromptu All Along the Watchtower to close out the European leg of the tour.

Low Light opens as the sun goes down near the waterfront. Rare early-show appearance of Betterman.  Ed addresses the crowd after Corduroy, saying “I drink to you! I drink to summer! I drink to Portugal!  I drink to the great Matt Cameron on the batteria!” Rats makes its tour debut. Mike is absolutely on fire during Even Flow. It’s Ok tag is sung in Portuguese (“Está tudo bem”). After Jeremy, Ed mentions that they shared the very same stage with The White Stripes several years ago, and this time around it’s Jack White. Ed describes Can’t Deny Me as a protest song inspired by the womens’ movement occurring in the States and around the world at the time, and dedicates it “for all the ladies and the strong men that support them.” Mike is in full Hendrix mode during Black, and Ed improvs before the We Belong Together tag: “If I had to do it all again/Probably make the same mistakes/’Cause I’m a stupid man/If I had the chance to do it again/If I had the chance to do it again.” Ed goes on an emotional rant out of the break about the state of the world, stating that those in power who are “holding onto these antiquated ideals…will eventually go away,” and we should all help speed up that process, leading into a gorgeous Imagine. Before Comfortably Numb, Ed states “We’re going to borrow this next song as well. So thank you John, thank you Yoko, and thank you Roger.” Porch features an extended tease of Seven Nation Army (complete with an impromptu crowd singalong), and the screens pan over to Jack White who is watching the concert from the side of the stage (and grinning like a little kid). Jack then joins on lead guitar for a rousing RITFW, relegating Stone to tambourine duty, and Jeff relinquishes his bass near the end and joins Boom at the piano.

Release builds up very nicely to open. Ed starts a brief callback with the seeming intention of throwing the crowd off guard before rushing into Lukin. Corduroy includes the extra solo from Mike during the new breakdown section. After Why Go, and perhaps referencing the organizational chaos marking the festival’s first day, Ed’s greeting to the crowd in Spanish relates a conversation about the amount of people in attendance: “A friend told me… ‘No, you don’t understand, the people in Madrid are insane’ and I adore insanity, so here’s a big hug to all my crazy friends.” Ed speaks in Spanish again before Even Flow, recalling how Mike first played the song in Madrid 26 years earlier to a few hundred people: “He played amazing that night, but wait ‘til you see him play now.” Can’t Deny Me is introduced with a dedication to “all the strong women in the audience who will change the world” and a PSA video featuring actors Luis Tosar and Javier Bardem reminding the men in the audience that “no means no,” eliciting rousing applause: feminism and violence against women are especially prominent issues in Spain at the moment. Ed wraps up Wasted Reprise by adding “Enjoy your last breaths, old men, of racism and sexism, you fuckers are going to die and it’ll die with you.” Better Man gets the slightly extended version of the Save it for Later tag. Mike, Stone, and Jeff spend the breakdown of Porch in a three-person guitar circle while Ed steps down to the ground and walks down a corridor stretching into the VIP area closest to the stage to mingle with the crowd (hugs and even a kiss included). Just Breathe intro is interrupted by someone from the crowd’s expression of affection, and Ed responds “You’re very nice… I love you, too” before going on to describe the song as about “the big love…as big as the oceans…as big as the Spanish summer sky, as big as the crowd at the Mad Cool Festival” and invites the crowd to illustrate how big they are by lifting the lights of their phones to be projected on the stage screens, and finally dedicates the song to Bardem and Penélope Cruz. Ed precedes the “We Belong Together” tag on Black with “Lo siento” (I’m sorry), and heads back to the crowd during “State of Love and Trust” for help singing. Possibly pressed for time (a few more bands are still scheduled), and after one more hug for Ed with the crowd, Matt signals a somewhat abrupt end to Alive, and the band immediately transitions into Rockin’ in the Free World to end the set, skipping the second verse, but not without a timely lyrical adaptation (“there’s a million points of light for the immigrant man, open our hearts while we can”) to bring the night to an end.

Early appearances of Elderly Woman and Corduroy get the crowd going early, huge singalongs. Mike takes two long and melodic solos during Corduroy. Ed greets the audience with a “Salud salud” and “Hola Barcelona,” trying hard to incorporate a Barcelona accent, and draws some wild applause when he references the ongoing World Cup. Ghost makes its only appearance of 2018, and the band sounds incredibly tight on it. A member of the crowd yells out “You’re killing it Mike” before Nothing as it Seems. After Setting Forth, Matt starts the beat of Not For You, and Jeff begins jamming a little bit, as if he is about to join in, but with a quick turnaround, the band goes straight into Given to Fly. Even Flow is introduced as “Tiny penis orange man.” Leading up to the show, there was a concerted fan-led effort to get the band to acknowledge a fan, Israel, who had recently passed. Ed comments after Even Flow:

“You know, someone who couldn’t be here this week to see these shows. You know sometimes you lose…there’s a bit of a family, you know there’s lots of people who have listened to us long enough to where they’ve met at shows and then gotten married and had kids and brought kids to shows and there’s a bit of a community and so when you get news that you lost one of your, the folks in your community, it’s nice to see everyone come together and support each other and the loved ones of that person and as a band we’d like to participate in supporting that person and that family and their memory and so we’d like to…it’s very powerful, it’s probably one of the most important byproducts of being in a group that we had no idea would ever happen, we’re just happy to be here together but we’re here together. And so this one, I thought it would be nice if we just take this room and light it up for a young man named Israel who should have been here tonight. He went into some surgery that he should have come out of, and there were some complications, and, um, the news was sad so what we’d really like to do is come together for him tonight. This is for brother Izz and his friends and his family.”

This leads into Israel’s favorite song, Oceans, and they keep the  tribute going by following it up with Light Years..

The “It’s Ok” tag in Daughter is replaced with “Esta Bien,” and the Spanish crowd gladly obliges. An audience member has a Gord Downie shirt that Ed mentions on mic and asks the cameras to show it. He says that he lost a friend recently, and that this next one is for his friend Ken. The band launches into Come Back, an incredible version with a lot of space, great vocals and some very emotional guitar work. Wasted Reprise goes straight into Better Man, with Ed adding some extra lyrics to Save it for Later. Mike starts Yellow Ledbetter, but Ed abruptly stops him to say:

“Whoa whoa whoa, I’m sorry…I had to tell you, I’m looking for a young boy named Miguel because I want to give him his first glass of wine. I got this letter, it says Dear Eddie, oh and it had a great drawing on it too, I think they might show it ‘there’ [points to video screen], its a great drawing of us playing live…there’s Matt and Jeff and Stone and Mike and me and he’s right in the front so he should be…that’s not Miguel is it…that’s right in the spot, you’re right in the spot. You make sure this gets to him, yeah? So it says ‘Dear Ed, my name is Miguel. I’m 9 yrs old, I’m a big fan of yours. I’d like to meet you tomorrow. Tomorrow is a great day for me because I’ll see you live. I’ve waited a long time for this moment.’ [laughs] Well I’ll tell you what Miguel, after tonight, it won’t be another 12 years before we’re back in Barcelona. We’re very…and lastly he says…’I would be very grateful, if you play tomorrow at the concert, Yellow Ledbetter.’ So it’s our pleasure Miguel, this is for you my friend.”

Yellow Ledbetter ends the night, the crowd bids farewell to the band with a soccer cheer, and Ed steps back up to the mic and says “We truly truly love this city, and as people here tonight we thank you so much, we really can’t wait to come back….I will keep it with me I promise.”

Small Town opens, setting the campfire mood of a late night festival set. Ed tries to get the crowd to sing along at the end, which is heard from the front but not the full crowd as a whole.  Do The Evolution, however, features the crowd chanting along to Stone’s playing during the bridge with a bit of Ed’s encouragement. Corduroy is the extended version, and also has some crowd chanting during the intro. Following the song Ed addresses the crowd in Dutch for a few lines, which is always a struggle.  He continues in English, offering that this is the best [festival] lineup and the group can’t remember another lineup that compares, and it means a lot to them to be on this stage and they are very grateful.  He offers it’s their 5th time playing the festival and introduces Matt Cameron on the drums, and that this is his 7th time, as he’s played it with Soundgarden, adding “We have something special tonight…and speaking of Soundgarden, we have Mr. Kim Thayil with us here tonight and he doesn’t normally leave Seattle. He’s got an incredible gang with him because he’s over here doing some amazing shows so right now it is my honor to introduce a true legend…MC5, Mr. Wayne Kramer, I turn the mic over to you. Here I guess you’d call him Vayne, so Vayne this is Werchter, Werchter, this is Wayne.” The MC50 lineup of the MC5 joins on stage, including Wayne, Kim, Doug Pinnick (King’s X), Brendan Canty (Fugazi), and Marcus Durant (Zen Guerrilla), Ed introduces the members and then hands the mic to Wayne who offers the famous line, “right now…right now…it’s time to kick out the jams, motherfucker!” The combined bands then perform the MC5’s “Kick out the Jams,” trading off solos, with Marcus and Ed trading verses. Ed teases “here’s a quiet one for you” before going into Even Flow. Prior to Habit, he says “Jack White dedicated a song earlier to Donald Trump and I don’t want to give him too much attention…but we got one for him too.” Habit falls apart halfway through, leading Ed to offer “fuck him it’s not worth it.” The improv that follows features the lines “oh what I’d do to you if I thought I could get away with it, what I could do to you.” Given to Fly is introduced with “this one is for all our kids and the next generation who are going to make it alright.” Jeremy features a rather large crowd participation at the end, singing along during the outro, and Ed recognizes the good singing. Jack Johnson joins for Imagine amidst a wash of cell phone lights throughout the crowd.  Jack and Ed trade versus and the song is performed with the full band seated. Ed attempts in Dutch to congratulate the Belgian football team after Once (Belgium had defeated Brazil 2-1 the previous night in the World Cup), and says  they’d like to play some Ramones for the crowd and the team, leading into I Believe in Miracles.  An 8-minute Black includes great crowd participation on the last lines, Mike’s solo slowly fading into the crowd taking over singing the outro and clapping. Out of the break, portions of the crowd continue singing the outro to Black. Alive is dedicated to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Mike begins a few notes of Yellow Ledbetter before Ed calls an audible and starts Baba O’Riley instead.

Ed extends the  “dear god” lyric in Sometimes. Longer than usual Corduroy breakdown before call and response section, and Ed addresses the crowd in German before the end solo section. Cameron destroys the ending. Active moshing and on-point clapping from the pit during Save You. Given to Fly lyric is changed to “made it out to Berlin..” Ed mentions that Mike, Jeff, and Stone had played this venue before with Neil Young (on the 1995 Mirrorball tour), then introduces special guest Danny Clinch on harmonica for the next song called “Blue-eyed frog” (Red Mosquito). “Fuck Trump” is added to the first verse of In My Tree. Ed mentions he is looking for J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. in the crowd, and dedicates Even Flow to him. One of the wishes in Wishlist is to be “as fortunate as Mike McCready.” Habit is introduced as “Tiny Orange Penis Man,” the spoken line is “speaking as a man who despises racism in ANY form.” “Angie” is on the setlist but only teased. Ed asks for the girls/women to help on an extended ‘It’s Ok’ tag, then shouts out the Ramones museum before Lukin (prompting a “hey ho let’s go” chant). During Porch, the crowd begins tossing cardboard beer caddies into the air and onstage, Jeff grabs one and plays bass with it. After the break, Ed says they’d play until dark, but the band didn’t realize how much the crowd had been drinking, then reads a note from a Prague man who found his wife through a show, dedicating Thin Air to him, but Stone hilariously can’t remember how the song goes. Ed plays electric guitar on Thumbing My Way and dedicates Breath to ‘Singles’ character Cliff Poncier, “who is here tonight.” He quickly mentions that the band’s families are in town and are having a great educational experience before the second encore begins, including his daughters’ trip to the Berlin Wall, dedicating Comfortably Numb as a thank you to Roger Waters. J Mascis is found and brought onstage for the Rockin’ In The Free World finale.

Last night, May 22, Pearl Jam wrapped its two-night booking at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum with an astounding two-set performance. Carrying the celebration of Dark Matter –its 12th studio album, released on April 19–to the Golden State, the band bridged its storied past into its bright future with an artful collection of longtime favorites and exciting new tracks. This second date was distinguished by the sheer volume of tour debuts, returning five timeless classics to the group’s rotation, plus a loving tribute to Tom Petty, a friend and hero to frontman Eddie Vedder, who regularly renews his commitment to the legacy of the late icon.

Pearl Jam kicked off its first set with “Long Road” from Merkin Ball , the group’s 1995 collaborative EP with Neil Young, who originally contributed pump organ to the track; Vedder dedicated this first track to his uncle John. After cycling through live staples “Nothingman” and “Present Tense,” the band staged a thundering run through “Go,” the lead single from 1993’s Vs. which arrived as the first tour debut of the evening. Next, the band turned over to new material, reciting Dark Matter cuts “Scared of Fear,” “React” and the exhilarating and harmonious standout “Wreckage” before unleashing 1998’s fan favorite “Untitled” for the first time this year. The grunge legends followed with two more tour debuts, unearthing “MFC” from 1998’s Yield and “All Those Yesterdays,” a deeper cut from the same album staged only 24 times in the band’s three decades on the cutting edge.

Pearl Jam continued through its first frame with more essentials and fresh tracks, reaching a notable highlight with the heavy-hitter “Black,” fondly remembered as the band’s first runaway hit and treasured by fans as one of its finest works still. To bring its soul-stirring treatment of this stone-cold classic to new heights, the group attached a tag of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” delivered by lead guitarist Mike McCready in a fiery solo. Watch a fan-recorded video of this memorable performance below.

This tag proved prophetic in the second set when the band once again staged what is rapidly becoming a trademark. After closing the previous set with a tour debut of 2006’s “Comatose” and “Porch,” the band returned to the stage behind Vedder, who stepped into the spotlight alone for a solo version of “I Won’t Back Down.” Vedder’s chilling moment of reverence for the dearly departed country star was made all the more powerful by the fact that it was delivered on Petty’s guitar, which the artist gifted to him. This marked the fourth time the frontman has saluted Petty on the tour, and the band’s 24th approach to the cover since 1994.

Finally, as the concert came to a close, the band brought on one last surprise for its Los Angeles fans. For the penultimate song in the second set, the band welcomed tour opener Deep Sea Diver to support its well-traveled cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” plus icons, longtime collaborators and friends Andrew Watt and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith. Watt recently advanced his creative relationship with Pearl Jam as the producer for Dark Matter , and Watt, Smith and Vedder toured together in 2022 to support Vedder’s solo project Earthling , bringing the Young cover to nine of its dates. Watch a fan-recorded video of the exhilarating track below.

Pearl Jam will perform again on Saturday, May 25, to headline BottleRock Napa Valley in Napa, Calif., then wrap the first leg of its North American tour with a pair of hometown shows at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena on May 28 and 30. Music | woman found dead in san jose home after barricaded homicide suspect surrenders, music | review: pearl jam does something it hadn’t done in over 25 years, pearl jam plays sacramento for first time since 1998.

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - May 13, Eddie Vedder performs with Pearl Jam at the Golden 1 Center on Monday. (Chris Riley/Times-Herald)

Yet, that certainly hasn’t translated to many appearances in California’s capital city over the decades.

“In 30-plus years, we’ve only said these words like three times: ‘Good evening, Sacramento,'” vocalist Eddie Vedder remarked near the start of the band’s concert on Monday night at the Golden 1 Center. “I didn’t know that it’s been that rare.”

RELATED:  Eddie Vedder defends Steve Buscemi during Pearl Jam concert in Sacramento

Not only has a Pearl Jam show in Sacramento been rare, it’s also been something that hasn’t happened in a really, really long time. Indeed, Bill Clinton was President the last time the group played inside the city limits, in 1998 at the old Arco Arena. (Although Pearl Jam did play in the general area in 2000 — at the what’s now called the Toyota Amphitheatre in Marysville.)

“Thank you for your patience,” Vedder said to the full house of fans. “We appreciate you and your faith.”

The band then rewarded the audience for its patience and faith — having waited more than a quarter of a century since the last Pearl Jam gig in Sacramento — by delivering a spellbinding 2½ hour show that married classic tracks with material from its very well-received new album, “Dark Matter.”

In other words, those who plan to catch Pearl Jam when it headlines the BottleRock Napa Valley festival over Memorial Day Weekend should be very excited indeed.

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - May 13, Eddie Vedder performs with Pearl Jam at the Golden 1 Center on Monday. (Chris Riley/Times-Herald)

The band kicked off Monday’s show in rather subdued fashion, appearing in silhouette on a mostly dark stage and softly rumbling through “Pendulum,” from 2013’s “Lightning Bolt.” From there, the group — which consists of Vedder, guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, bassist Jeff Ament and drummer Matt Cameron — creeped right over to the 1996 “No Code” cut “I’m Open.”

Both of those numbers were being played for the first time on this Dark Matters World Tour, nicely illustrating just how greatly the Seattle band changes up the setlist from show to show. Sure, the tour is only a little more than a week old — having kicked off in Vancouver on May 4 — but it’s still mighty impressive to note that eight of the 24 selections performed on Monday were tour debuts.

The absolute highlight of the first portion of the night — and, arguably, the entire show — came with the third number, “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town,” which proved to be one of those transcendent moments that can define a concert in your memory for years to come. The 1993 “Vs.” song is certainly on the very short list of Pearl Jam’s best, as well as one of the finest rock songs released in all of the ’90s, yet the version played on Monday seemed to reach an even higher level than usual, propelled by a band and a city who were coming together for the first time in ages.

“I just want to scream hello!” Vedder sang as if his life depended on it, as the words were pushed ever higher by the thousands of passionate accompanying vocalists in the crowd. “My God it’s been so long, never dreamed you’d return. But now here you are and here I am.”

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - May 13, Eddie Vedder performs with Pearl Jam at the Golden 1 Center on Monday. (Chris Riley/Times-Herald)

It was an absolute love fest between the city and the band, led by a gushing Vedder, who pointed out that the group knew several people in the crowd.

“We’ve got some friends here,” he said. “And I already feel that that includes all of you.”

Yet, it’s important to note that Vedder and Sacramento haven’t always been besties. Indeed, he once drew headlines for blasting the city during a 2013 show in Oklahoma City, where Vedder’s beloved Seattle Supersonics relocated and began playing basketball as the Thunder in 2008. Instead of taking his anger out on the Oklahoma folks, however, the hoops-loving singer swung at the people of Sacramento, who had successfully blocked their NBA franchise — the Kings — from possibly moving to Seattle. It was all incredibly petty and childish — and very 21st century sports fan — as Vedder decided to make it personal.

“When you think about it, and if you’ve been to Sacramento, they’re already kind of (expletive),” Vedder was quoted as saying .

But those bad vibes are long gone, apparently, as Vedder and company continued to rock the Golden 1 Center — which, ironically, is operated by those same Sacramento Kings — with such new album offerings as “React, Respond,” “Running” and “Scared of Fear.”

The group used the opportunity to showcase eight of the 11 songs from “Dark Matter,” and, without exception, this new material held up very well among the classics.

McCready, as per usual, was worth the price of admission on his own merit, burning through some of the hottest guitar leads one will find in all of rock. And just when you think he can’t possibly get more amazing on the frets, he hoists the guitar behind his head and blindly powers through the amazing lead on “Even Flow,” one of a half-dozen numbers played from the band’s game-changing debut, 1991’s “Ten.”

The group finished up the 90-minute-plus main set with the anthem “Better Man” and then returned to play almost another hour’s worth of music during an encore that really could have passed for a second set.

McCready again was at the forefront, powering through epic leads on “Black” and “Alive.” And Vedder seemed to be having the time of his life as he led the crowd in one sing-along after another.

“Sacramento!” Vedder shouted out to the packed arena. “Thank you very much for bringing it tonight.”

Amyl and The Sniffers reveal UK and European tour plans, share defiant new single calling out jealous and judgemental "40-year-old metalheads"

Amyl and The Sniffers lay bare plans to rampage through the UK and Europe in November

Amyl and The Sniffers, May 26, 2024

Amyl and The Sniffers have shared details of a winter tour of the UK and Europe.

The Australian quartet's announcement comes in the wake, last week, of the release of their first new music in three years, single U Should Not Be Doing That .

The single features brilliantly biting lyrics such as " I was in Tokyo popping shit off / While you were down in Sydney tryin’ to get jacked off / I was in London, being the queen / And you were in my head saying you should not be doing tha t" " U Should Not Be Doing That makes me laugh," says vocalist Amy Taylor, "but it’s also in a way poking fun at the shock that people still feel at a little bit of skimpy clothing, and the bitchy high school way that the music community still is (yes I’m talking to you random 40-year-old metalheads sitting around a table doing lines and bitching about a 28-year-old chick in a band for wearing shorts and “selling out”) but it mainly makes me laugh.

"It’s unconscious and meant nothing at the time of writing it but now I think it’s a comedic way of rubbing the dog’s nose in its own dog piss after it wee’d on your favourite rug or something."

Following their appearance at the Bearded Theory festival this past weekend, the band have announced the following shows:
