Once this area had many lakes and it was called the City of 60 lakes or ‘Chakta’. Most of the lakes in the region have disappeared and whatever remains is just a glimpse of what they might have been in the past. Today the life of Nainital revolves around the lake of Naini . The Corbett reward all those who take the effort of the one and a half kilometre walk along a narrow trail with pristine views of the cascades. Located in Kaladhungi, the falls are lush with the tropical forest kind of vegetation which is characteristic of the Corbett National Park. Ornithologists in particular frequent the Falls for the rich bio-diversity of bird life in the surrounding region. Corbett Falls was earlier known as Danger Falls because of cave-like formations of unknown dimensions that formed at its base and were big enough to hold a man captive. The death of 3 locals who went swimming there and got caught in the cave is on record. However, with time, silt and mud naturally covered the holes which can still be seen but pose no threat. A popular legend has it that the Masaan Devta, who was an evil spirit feared and revered by the locals, was bound in chains under the Falls.

Equally mythically, the depth of the lake has never been accurately gauged and the exact figure is unknown. Locals believe this is yet another proof of the divine properties of the lake. One of the best lakes to boat on, Naukuchiyaltal is beautiful in autumn.
Jim Corbett National Park (Ramnagar)
