Live reviews

For fans of Celtic Punk music, one of the standards that all other bands will be measured up to is The Pogues. With a long standing history in the field, fans look forward to hearing the distinct tin whistle and banjo combinations that have been part of their tradition since 1982. All it will take is one look at their first album in 1984 “Red Roses for Me” to hear the impact they made on the Celtic music culture. The Pouges are the standard of Celtic Punk band music.

One of the unique things that makes The Pogues a fan favorite is the laid back vibe that comes with attending one of their concerts. Part of this comes from their name, the original name of the band was Pogue Mahoneof the Irish póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse“

Though due to the death of guitarist Phillip Chevron, the band has not been touring or releasing new music. The last album they released was in October of 2013 which was a box collection of all of their studio albums and a previously unreleased live album from 1991 featuring former guitarist Joe Strummer.

Music from the beginning

The Pogues Tour – 1985

pogues tour 1985

October 5th 1985 – Leicester University

I’d say the Pogues were at their peak in 1985, for a number of reasons. They had just released their second album, Rum Sodomy and the Lash, which for me is still their greatest album (quite possibly because it was the first one I bought!). Secondly, in the years to come, lead singer Shane MacGowan would have one long battle with drugs and alcohol, which would sadly affect his live work, but what a performer and what a band!

pogues tour 1985

To my embarrassment, I have still not gone back to their first album “Red Roses For Me”….I must right that wrong!!

The Pogues are a very strong knit Irish folk band. They were a total breath of fresh air when they first surfaced in the England in 1984 (I’m sure they were around long before that!!). Generally you would see a 5 to 7 piece band playing a real mix of traditional Irish music and original compositions, with a fascinating rock beat. They used a wide range of instruments too.

The main protagonists in the band were:

  • Spider Stacy – Vocal, all round musician and tin-whistle and inspirational songwriter. Spider pretty much kept the band ticking over during any offbeat moments from Shane.
  • Jem Finer – Banjo, mandola, guitar, saxophone,  hurdy-gurdy Spider Stacy – Vocal, all round musician and tin-whistle and inspirational songwriter. Spider pretty much kept the band ticking over during any offbeat moments from Shane.
  • James Fearnley – Accordion, guitar, mandolin
  • Cait O’Riordan – Bass guitar and vocal
  • Andrew Rankin – Drums

Pogue Mahone was the original name of the band and you get they were certainly not planning on being main stream when you find out this is a variant of the Irish phrase póg mo thóin, meaning “kiss my arse” Well, we had been to some fine moshpits in our short gig going lives, so we were ready to mosh with The Pogues. The etiquette of moshing is that you all get into position and generally some move forwards and some escape to the back. We thought we got to the gig early, but due to the being so popular we could only get half way to the front! This was unheard of! Normally you could manoeuvre around people and at least be on row 5 before you knew it……not tonight, this was going to be special.

It was so hot, sticky and sweaty before The Pogues turned up. The Sick Bed of Cúchulainn was the opening track, which starts slow an lets rip 🙂 This would be a good time to move forward……absolutely stonewalled, no space to move, just pogo with the flow! What fun!

This would be non stop dancing and loud singing whilst a bunch of Irish boys and girls ploughed out fast moving folk and rock tunes.

I’ve never been so hot and sweaty at a concert before or after! Sally MacLennane is a firm favourite for me and the crowd and we all get a chance to singalong as well.

There were quite alot of cover versions, but as they were mainly of Irish folk songs it was a great education and another introduction to a new style of music for us. We would learn about Ewan Macoll (father of Kirsty) and I would find out more about Irish folk bands such as, The Dubliners and The Chieftains.

Each of the songs were mainly a few minutes of high intesity, laughter fun and dancing, plus a real good sing along……A really great night.

Printemps de bourges in bourges, france on sat, 08 apr 1989.

Shaun arrived on stage with a bottle of water. He was completly drunk and falled unable to sing. The guitarist replaced him. Big deception

West End Centre in Aldershot, UK on Mon, 18 Mar 1985

I attended this show, the first time I’d seen The Pogues. I was twelve days off my twenty-first birthday and six months into my training as a mental health nurse. As I recall the ticket was a birthday present from my friends, who I went to the gig with. What a riot! Everything I expected it to be and more. As I recall , I won a gallon of beer in a cat food eating competition, which supplemented our meagre spending money and enabled us to get pretty pissed. Spider gave me a swig from the half bottle he had… he’d given up playing and was sat on the edge of the stage. I bought a copy of ‘Red Roses for Me’ ,at the show, autographed by the band, which I still have. It remains one of my most prized possessions. Great to see the photos on your site.. brought back some memories. I saw the band a few more times, notably at Surrey Free Arts Festival, where they were joined by Joe Strummer (same year or’86) and Shane with The Popes at Leeds Heineken gig, Roundhay Park (possibly’92) singing ‘Good Golly, Miss Molly’ repeatedly until the plug was pulled! RIP Shane McGowan. Thank you for the music. George Atkinson, Leeds.

Riviera Theatre in Chicago, US on Wed, 02 Oct 1991

Joe Strummer was epic. Clash tunes played , with all the Irish Trad instruments. Brilliant 👌

The Vic Theatre in Chicago, US on Sat, 05 Dec 1987

Shane MacGowan was utterly brilliant that night.Greatest live performance I ever saw, kudos to the Pogues and Joe Strummer. The floor was a delirious mosh pit of frenzied bodies where pulsating Irish trad met Punk anarchy head on.Intoxicated brilliance was never more intoxicatingly brilliant!

Wolverhampton Civic Hall in Wolverhampton, UK on Thu, 11 Oct 1990

I was there with my wife and some friends. It was a brilliant night with all the standard hits plus some lesser known ones. Shane was pretty drunk and often went off or sat down and his voice was all over the place but still somehow brilliant. Being in our twenties we were in the thick of the mosh pit and I broke my glasses when they fell off. Shane came back on for the encore - The band played waltzing Matilda - perhaps the most moving performance of any song I have ever heard. I cried, everyone cried, his voice sent shivers down your spine. At the end the cheers went on forever. We all thought that could be his last show but history says otherwise. I've never been to a more emotional gig

Baths Hall in Scunthorpe, UK on Sun, 04 Dec 1988

I was there by chance, my irish family living in scunthorpe told me of this charity concert for mo gale, before there uk tour,. What a great suprize to see kirsty macColl as a guest appearance. It' was a fantastic night, did not come on stage till 11pm probably having a few refreshments, Shane was spot on with his vocals, not a lot of people new about the gig because it wasn't a sell out. one of the best pogues gigs out of em all that I attended

Barrowland in Glasgow, UK on Sun, 17 Mar 1991

I have never in my life been so anxious about attending a gig. Seeing The Pogues in my favourite venue on St Patrick’s Day would normally be a match made in heaven, but on this occasion there was a caveat. The ‘Old Firm’ as they were called then - Celtic & Rangers - had been drawn together in the Scottish Cup and they were playing earlier that day at Celtic Park. My mate - Brian - and I had tickets for both, but our team Celtic were going through a sticky patch at that time. A defeat in the Glasgow Derby on St Patrick’s day would have led to the gig being a wake. As it transpired the game will go down in history as one of the greatest ever Old Firm games as Celtic overturned the odds to record a memorable victory with four red cards issued on the day. The atmosphere when we eventually reached the Barras was electric. I have never been at a gig where so many of the audience were there so early and the party was in full swing an hour before the Pogues hit the stage. Shane McGowan was stone cold sober and revelled in the atmosphere; Spider had clearly over-indulged, but the gig was an absolute triumph. Chuck in appearances by both the recently released Gerry Conlon and Paul Hill of the Guildford Four on stage and you have the concert goers version of having all your ducks in a row. At times it felt like simultaneously the roof would come off and the floor give way, but had that happened such was the heaving mass of humanity on display I suspect we would have remained suspended in mid air, floating on the cloud of our collective elation. Today we mourn the loss of the ringmaster on that occasion - Shane McGowan - but there will be smiles to match the tears of mourning and gratitude for a life fully lived. 🙏

My first and one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

Riverside 1 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK on Thu, 04 Dec 1997

With the passing of Shane, I recall this concert as one of thee BEST I have ever witnessed. Shane went awol, found then plonked on stage some 90 mins after the scheduled start time. His eyes closed, griping the mic, he was out of it! But the music started and he was off, never missing a beat, screeching and hollering, feeding off the crowd. What a performance. What a gig. What a memory. Gartha Shane.

O2 Forum Kentish Town in London, UK on Fri, 17 Dec 1993

I was there, ages ago...it was a great show.

Christie Brinkley was feeling the music as Billy Joel performed her song!

On Friday, Brinkley attended her ex-husband's sold-out show at Madison Square Garden, and got a special serenade. In a video posted on TikTok, the former supermodel is all smiles as Joel belts out his tune, "Uptown Girl," which was written for her during the early years of their romance. Brinkley also appeared in the music video.

In the clip, Brinkley, 70, is all smiles as she sways to the music and mouths the words of the song along with the sold-out crowd. From the stage, the Piano Man smiled as he sang the tune and looked in his ex-wife's direction.

Joel, 74, and Brinkley were married from 1985-1994. Together, the pair are parents of Alexa Ray Joel, 37.

@gnarcar_ 40 years later and your ex man is still grinning at you like that while he sings the song he wrote about how rich and hot you are? Voodoo clam #fyp #billyjoel #christiebrinkley #madisonsquaregarden ♬ original sound - carly

Following the show, Brinkley shared a video filled with snippets from the concert including her dancing to "Uptown Girl," the moment their daughter, Alexa, surprised Joel with a performance of "To Sir With Love," and singing along with her 25-year-old daughter, Sailor Brinkley Cook.

"Thanks for singing us a song @billyjoel and @alexarayjoel You've got us feeling alright! Just a few snippets from a magical evening at the garden! ( sometimes with my thumb over the speaker my apologies) @sailorbrinkleycook I must add we were pretty good back up singers right? 😜 #billyjoelmsg #girldad #daddysgirl #historic #residency."

In another video, Brinkley celebrated Alexa and Joel's moment on stage with a longer video of their duet performance of "Say Goodbye to Hollywood."

"Before  @billyjoel 's historic residency at  @thegarden  becomes a souvenir that slowly fades away.. one more night to remember! Alexa Ray and her Pop in perfect harmony on, Say Good Bye to Hollywood one last time in this great huge arena that Billy has turned into his own cozy living room," she wrote. "And then as if that charming duo wasn't enough, the tears welled up when she surprised her Dad with a serenade of To Sir With Love ( technical difficulties on my video so not pictured) but trust me it was sweetness personified. Billy was in his word, faklempt! (Sorry if I deleted you but I just noticed the two clips both didn’t load so trying again ❤️🩷💜."

Joel's decade-long residency at Madison Square Garden is going to end in July -- following his 150th show.

In February, the GRAMMY-winning musician spoke to ET and teased his future onstage in the Big Apple.

"Well I never said I'm never going to play the Garden again, just in this particular run and the residency, that's the end of that for now," he shared. "We can do the Garden again, I can play other venues in New York where I haven't played in the last 10 years, so it opens up a whole new world."
