by Em Casalena March 18, 2024, 1:10 pm
English indie-rock band Pulp rarely comes stateside, but it looks like they’re going to make a few stops in the US and Canada this year on a short international tour . The band will hit stops in California, New York, Illinois, and Ontario on the North American leg of the tour after finishing their international stops in the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. This will be the first time in over a decade that Pulp will visit North American fans! And it doesn’t look like any supporting acts have been announced.

Pulp is an English alternative rock band from Sheffield consisting of Jarvis Cocker, Candida Doyle, Nick Banks, Steve Mackey and Mark Webber.
In 1978 when Jarvis Cocker and Peter Dalton were only teenagers, they formed the band Arabicus Pulp while at The City School in Sheffield. In 1981 the group gave their demo to BBR 1 Radio DJ John Peel, who gave them a Peel Session, thus increasing their local popularity. Despite their exposure on national radio, success was not forthcoming and, apart from Cocker, most of the core line-up left for university; Simon and David Hinkler, Wayne Furniss, Peter Boam, Gary Wilson and Saskia Cocker then joined Cocker.
Together as a new lineup, they managed to get enough local backing to record a mini-album in late 1982, entitled “It.” However, the album failed commercially, and after continued failed success the Cocker was set to disband then group; that is, until a new incarnation of Pulp was formed. The result was their signing with Fire Records, and releasing “Freaks” in 1987. “Freaks” which had been pushed back from its original release date was not well received. Due to the continued turmoil of getting the band on a momentum, Cocker returned to his studies, effectively disbanding the group; that is, until Cocker met with Steve Mackey, who joined the group as a bass player.
In mid-1989, they began recording another album called “Separations” which they released in 1992, but not before leaving their label to sign with Warp Records. The release of singles as well as the album garnered much attention from both fans and critics alike, earning them Mercury Prize nominations, as well as chart topping singles. This sudden increase in popularity was helped by the massive media interest in Britpop, helping them gain more success overseas. Released in October 1995, their next album, “Different Class” also garnered significant critical praise and debuted at the top of the UK Album Chart.
During the period of high attention from music critics as well as tabloids, Russell Senior decided to leave the band. Additionally, Cocker was having difficulty with the celebrity lifestyle, battling cocaine addiction and a break-up of a long-term relationship. They did release “This Is Hardcore” in 1998, but essentially fell from the public eye until 2001 with the release of “We Love Life.” The group set out on tour, hitting the United Kingdom where they would play their last show before taking an extended hiatus.
While on hiatus, Cocker worked on multiple side projects including a solo project, and in 2010 the announcement of their reuniting was made, as well as an announcement of 22 concerts between May and September 2011, taking place in Europe and Australia. On 25 December 2012, Pulp made a previously unreleased track, "After You," a song that had only previously existed as a demo.
Live reviews
Pulp live are an experience worth having. I saw them at the Brixton Academy in 2011. Jarvis Cocker is a modern miracle. He danced across the stage, strutting, high kicking and leaping, like a herky-jerky marionette animated by the audience, by the music and by his immeasurable ego.
The band brought out many favourites from their huge catalogue, energising the crowd and persuading them to sing and dance along with passion. This was one of those occasions where the music genuinely rejuvenated - we were, audience and band alike, flung back into the 90s of our youth. We danced, we sang, we screamed at the sky. Jarvis, for that moment, was our tinpot god and we worshipped him like false idols were going out of fashion.
Pulp's music live is a little faster, a little more energetic than on record. The crowd lifts the band and urges on the tempo. They bite into tunes like Disco 2000 - a personal favourite - Wickerman, Lipgloss and Common People and elevate them to something hardcore, passionate and occasionally terrifying. These are the great heroes of Britpop, you deserve to feel them live.

Pulp Reunite for First Show in 11 Years: Videos + Setlist
The Britpop icons' first show in a decade
Pulp kicked off their long-awaited 2023 “This is What We Do For an Encore Tour” at the Bridlington Spa in Bridlington, England on May 26th. The newly-reunited Britpop icons played a set full of fan favorites and deep cuts, marking their first show in a decade: “We are Pulp — I’ve not said that for quite a long time,” vocalist Jarvis Cocker greeted the packed crowd.
Cocker and company tore through the majority of their 1995 masterpiece Different Class, opening with “I Spy” and saving their smash “Common People” until their first of two encores. The set also included some highlights from 1994’s His N Hers like “Do You Remember the First Time?” and “Babies”; deeper cuts like “Weeds” and “Glory Days”; and their 2013 single “After You.”
“An encore happens when the crowd makes enough noise to bring the band back to the stage,” the band said in a statement announcing the reunion last October. “So… We are playing in the UK and Ireland in 2023. Therefore… Come along and make some noise. See you there.”
From the looks of it, folks certainly came along and made some noise. See videos of the evening as well as Pulp’s setlist below.
Notably, this marked Pulp’s first show since the death of longtime bassist Steve Mackey in March 2023, who’d previously announced that he’d be sitting out on the reunion tour.
Pulp will continue their tour through the UK and Ireland through July. You can find tickets at Viagogo .

Pulp, hailing from Sheffield, England, last performed in the city at the Warfield in 2012 .

Pulp emerged as a key player in the Brit-pop movement of the 1990s, standing shoulder to shoulder with Oasis and Blur , despite having been active since 1978 with minimal recognition.
The group’s breakthrough came with the release of the 1995 album “Different Class,” which spawned four top 10 singles in the U.K., including “Common People” and “Disco 2000.”
The band’s classic lineup included singer Cocker, keyboardist Candida Doyle, bassist Steve Mackey, guitarists Russell Senior and Mark Webber, and drummer Nick Banks. The upcoming tour will be dedicated to the memory of Mackey, who died at age 56 last year.
Pulp’s last full-length studio album was 2001’s “We Love Life.”

Pulp Reunite for First Shows in 11 Years
By Jazz Monroe
Pulp will return to the stage next year for the first time since their 2011-12 reunion dates . Jarvis Cocker and the band (minus bassist Steve Mackey) will play a string of festival, arena, and stadium shows around the United Kingdom and Ireland. Check out the dates below.
In a press release, Cocker said:
Three months ago, we asked, What exactly do you do for an encore?” Well… An encore happens when the crowd makes enough noise to bring the band back to the stage So… We are playing in the UK & Ireland in 2023 Therefore… Come along & make some noise See you there
Cocker announced the reformation in a Q&A with The Guardian earlier this year. The last time Pulp reformed—playing their last concerts in December 2012—Cocker told fans they were not writing new music, though they did team up with LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy for a new recording of old demo “ After You .”
Mackey wrote on Instagram , “I’ve decided to continue the work I’m engaged in—music, filmmaking and photography projects,” adding that he wished the band well.
In 2014, the band released a documentary, A Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets ; Cocker released the memoir Good Pop, Bad Pop this year. In the last couple of years, he has provided music for Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch and, with his his Jarv Is… project, released an album called Beyond the Pale .

Pulp confirm reunion shows for 2023
The Sheffield band will reform for a second time and play standalone shows as well as sets at the TRNSMT and Latitude festivals
Pulp have confirmed that they will reunite – for a second time – to play live shows in 2023.
“Three months ago, we asked, What exactly do you do for an encore?” frontman Jarvis Cocker said in a statement. “Well … An encore happens when the crowd makes enough noise to bring the band back to the stage. So … We are playing in the UK & Ireland in 2023. Therefore … Come along & make some noise.”
The Sheffield band – which, for these dates, consists of Cocker, Candida Doyle, Nick Banks and Mark Webber – will tour the UK from 26 May, starting in Bridlington Spa. The run includes two festival appearances, at Glasgow’s TRNSMT (7 July) and Latitude (21 July).
Bassist Steve Mackey announced that he would not be joining this reunion. “I’ve decided to continue the work I’m engaged in – music, film-making and photography projects,” he posted on Instagram . “Pulp is a very important part of my creative life and I’m exceptionally proud of the body of work we’ve created together.”
The dates follow a previous run of reunion shows that spanned from 2011 to 2013 and included a surprise performance at the 2011 Glastonbury festival. That period also saw a reissue of the band’s early albums on Fire Records, but no new material. In 2012, Cocker told Q magazine that the band had no plans to record new material.
In 2014, the band released the documentary Pulp: A Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets, directed by Florian Habicht.
Cocker, 59, recently published Good Pop, Bad Pop: An Inventory by Jarvis Cocker , a memoir in which he reflected on his life after recollections sparked by items of personal ephemera from chewing gum to soap.
Tickets for Pulp’s 2023 dates will go on sale at 9am on 4 November.
