33. “Blister in the Sun,” Violent Femmes (1983) “Blister in the Sun” has endless fan theories about its meaning, but Violent Femmes songwriter Gordon Gano dismisses them. The song’s lasting appeal comes from its catchy folk-punk sound, clever drumming, and satisfying chorus. Gano believes people don’t love it for deep lyrics.

32. “Magic,” The Cars (1984) The Cars’ 1984 song “Magic” repeatedly mentions “summer” and is a catchy ’80s new wave pop hit. Written by Ric Ocasek, it reflects on a summer romance and peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, boosting Heartbeat City’s multi-platinum sales.

31. “Summertime Girls,” Y&T (1985) “Summertime Girls” is a big and anthemic summer song with layered harmonies and catchy guitar riffs. It gained airplay on radio and MTV in 1985 and was featured in the movie Real Genius. Though it’s a bit of an outlier for San Francisco’s Y&T, it remains a fun summer getaway.

30. “Blue Sky,” The Allman Brothers Band (1972) The Allman Brothers’ “Blue Sky” charms with its simple, gender-neutral lyrics expressing joy and gratitude. Dickey Betts intentionally made the song relatable to all by omitting gender-specific lines. With captivating guitar solos, it’s a perfect summer anthem for road trips.

29. “Good Times,” Chic (1979) “Good Times” found new life when the Sugarhill Gang used a Chic sample in their genre-breaking hit “Rapper’s Delight.” Niles Rodgers surprised audiences by seamlessly blending the two songs during concerts. But the catchy chant of “Clams on the half shell, and roller skates, ROLLER SKATES!” remained uniquely Chic’s.

28. “Hot in the City,” Billy Idol (1982) Billy Idol brings the club experience to you in “Hot in the City.” The song captures the feel of a night out, starting slow and building up to a passionate climax. Inspired by Idol’s own experiences in New York City, it’s a great night whether you leave now or later.

27. “Rock Lobster,” The B-52’s (1978) In the B-52’s’ surreal universe, parties involve earlobes falling deep, ocean visits feature giant clams and beach hangs include matching towels and exploring under docks. “Rock Lobster” isn’t the obvious choice for everyone’s summer playlist but for those who embrace their uniqueness, it’s the ideal choice for extraordinary summer adventures.

26. “In the Summertime,” Mungo Jerry (1970) British band Mungo Jerry had several ’70s UK hits, but they were a one-hit wonder in America with the infectious 1970 tune “In the Summertime.” The song has a catchy melody with acoustic guitar, banjo, double bass, piano, and even a jug. Ray Dorset sings about carefree summer days when the weather is high.

25. “Soak Up the Sun,” Sheryl Crow (2002) When winters are long and spring feels drizzly, the beginning of summer is the perfect time for a fresh start. Sheryl Crow co-wrote “Soak Up the Sun” to find joy in imperfect circumstances. The song’s video captures the essence of summer with surfers and beach bonfires.

24. “Hot Stuff,” Donna Summer (1979) Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” isn’t about the weather; it’s a sizzling track that combines R&B, power rock, and disco beats. With her captivating vocals and a guitar solo from Jeff Baxter, the song earned Summer a Grammy Award. For more edgy vibes, check out her track “Bad Girls” next.

23. “Born to Be Wild,” Steppenwolf (1968) “Born to Be Wild” embodies the primal thrill of hitting the open road. With captivating guitar riffs and an empowering call to action, it appeals to bikers, metalheads, and anyone seeking freedom.

22. “Born to Run,” Bruce Springsteen (1975) “Born to Run” tells a story of a protagonist’s passionate plea for love, but it represents the universal yearnings of restless youth seeking endless possibilities. Bruce Springsteen wrote it at 24, yet its resonance extends beyond youth. It serves as a reminder that we are all wanderers, destined to keep moving forward.

21. “Yankee Rose,” David Lee Roth (1986) Roth launched his post-Van Halen solo career with “Eat ‘Em and Smile,” recruiting guitar hero Steve Vai and flashy bassist Billy Sheehan. He impressed with the patriotic and summer-perfect “Yankee Rose.”

20. “Beautiful Girls,” Van Halen (1979) Van Halen’s sophomore album showcased their devilishly fun party-metal sound, giving the impression that even if you couldn’t be them, you could still join their company. “Beautiful Girls” outlines their frontman’s five-step plan for an endless summer: drink, smoke, sun, surf, and beautiful girls.

19. “Holiday Road,” Lindsey Buckingham (1983) “Holiday Road” instantly brings to mind the Griswold family and their misadventures in their station wagon. Lindsey Buckingham’s expert blend of bouncy pop-rock, featuring ’80s drum sounds, and layered vocals, creates a musical embodiment of a West Coast kick.

18. “Nightswimming,” R.E.M. (1992) “Nightswimming” by R.E.M. captures the tranquil essence of summer evenings. Accompanied only by piano and complemented by strings and a memorable oboe solo, the song evokes nostalgia for simpler times and the bittersweet awareness of summer’s inevitable end.

17. “Rockaway Beach,” Ramones (1977) Despite being from cold New York City, the Ramones’ songs have a summery feel. Their biggest hit, “Rockaway Beach,” pays homage to songwriter Dee Dee Ramone’s favorite Queens beach. It’s a quick, two-minute Beach Boys-inspired track from their third album, Rocket to Russia.

16. “Summertime Blues,” The Who (1967) Eddie Cochran couldn’t have predicted the diverse reinterpretations of “Summertime Blues” after his original recording in 1958. Blue Cheer added funk and Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady” in 1967, while The Who’s rowdy version captured the trials of youth, like struggling to schedule dates and facing parental restrictions. Summers are complicated, but things get better.

15. “Summer Nights,” Van Halen (1986) Reportedly Van Halen’s first song with Hagar, “Summer Nights” differs from 5150’s catchy pop hits. The band confidently embraces Eddie Van Halen’s stellar guitar riff, narrating an unforgettable aimless summer night.

14. “Lovely Day,” Bill Withers (1977) Bill Withers’ early career delved into deep introspection, but he shifted to a lighter, sweeter vibe in his 1977 single “Lovely Day.” The breezy track showcases his elite vocal sustain over a gently funky bass riff.

13. “Here Comes the Sun,” The Beatles (1969) George Harrison wrote “Here Comes the Sun” during a difficult time, both due to the British weather and the Beatles’ business matters. However, while strolling through Eric Clapton’s garden on a sunny day, he felt inspired to write about a long winter turning into a melting ice and bringing back smiles. The song disregards summer showers.

12. “(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay,” Otis Redding (1968) “(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding is a nostalgic summer song that captures the gentle passing of time. Despite Redding’s tragic death before its release in 1968, the song reached No. 1 on the Billboard chart and remains a timeless classic tied to his legacy.

11. “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” The Beach Boys (1963) Brian Wilson’s early ode to surfing, “Surfin’ USA,” borrows heavily from Chuck Berry’s classic “Sweet Little Sixteen.” The songs share similar structure, rhythm, and melody. The Beach Boys put their own spin on it, creating a beach party vibe with breezy vocals and an inviting kick drum.

10. “Hot Fun in the Summertime,” Sly & the Family Stone (1969) In July 1969, Sly & the Family Stone unveiled an exceptional summer song, which is considered one of the best of all time. “Hot Fun in the Summertime” doesn’t possess any hidden agenda or profound symbolism. Despite being 9 years old in 1969, the song’s events were not age-appropriate. Nevertheless, the catchy melody and Adams’ passionate delivery capture the carefree feel of summer.

8. “Saturday in the Park,” Chicago (1972) “Saturday in the Park” captures the perfect summer day, blending cultures and joyful moments. Robert Lamm’s observations, accompanied by Chicago’s music, create a vivid scene of diverse conversations and a guitar-playing ice cream vendor.

The Top 38 Summer Road Trip Songs

Like many folks, we have plans to hit the highway this summer for a few road trips. Which means in addition to packing enough snacks, water and soft drinks to keep us replenished, we’re going to need a good mix of songs to accompany the journey. And though the technology for making a road trip list of tunes has changed — what used to be created using LPs recorded onto cassettes, now is made in mere minutes with an iTunes or Spotify playlist — the fun of pulling from a wealth of material to create the perfect mix remains.

Billboard’s heavyweight list of top 30 summer songs got us to thinking, and while a few made our summer mix, our own personal taste prevailed for some alternatives for open-road jamming.

Our melting pot of tunes for this season, like all good mixes, features a wide variety. On this session we picked from songs (or bands) with “summer” in the name. Songs that can be upbeat or mellow. Classics and brand new. A combination of guilty pleasures, mellow jams, and indie rock. Again, a little bit of everything.

1. “Heaven” The Walkmen – The title track from this group’s 2012 album has a great groove geared toward hitting the road either for a lengthy road trip or just cruising around town.

2. “Bubble Toes” Jack Johnson – Johnson’s combination of acoustic-backed songs and surf sensibilities set up for a smooth ride into summer. This, a single from his 2001 debut album, is a prime example.

3. “Dog Days Are Over” Florence + the Machine – Florence Welch and her bandmates have gone from playing small clubs to large arenas since forming in London in 2007. This epic song, with its slow build and positive lyrics, is perfect for playing while putting miles behind on the open road.

4. “Brown Eyed Girl” Van Morrison – Originally released in 1967 following the Summer of Love, it’s fitting to include in a best of summer road trip songs playlist.

5. “Boyfriend” Best Coast – The debut album by this duo was full of summery, beachy vibes and this, the first single, is the perfect way to cruise through summer.

6. “Surfin’ Safari” The Beach Boys – A list of summer songs can’t be complete without at least one number by the group that had so many fun-in-the-sun defining hits.

7. “Here Comes the Sun” The Beatles – Yes, this is an obvious one, but as George sings, “I say, it’s all right.”

8. “Diamonds on the Inside” Ben Harper – Harper’s music infuses folk, blues, rock, soul, reggae, you name it. It all equates to a great soundtrack for heading out on the road this summer – see this song.

9. “Semi-Charmed Life” Third Eye Blind – This 1990s-formed band has had a resurgence lately with summer tour dates on the books, including Lollapalooza in July. This is the song that started it all and still revs the engines for sing-along, upbeat road trip songs.

10. “Summertime” The Sundays – When Harriet Wheeler sings “’Cause it’s you and me in the summertime, we’ll be hand in hand down in the park,” it paints a gleeful picture of the season. If you haven’t heard of this alternative English band, popular in the 1990s, then their music is worth getting caught up on. Try it on your next road trip.

11. “One Love/People Get Ready” Bob Marley and the Wailers – As fans of Marley’s music know, the majority of songs from this reggae legend can transport the listener to a warmer clime within the first notes. Put the compilation album “Legend,” where this song can be found, on repeat and drift away.

12. “Cruel Summer” Bananarama – Though the song’s lyrics reflect on the darker side of summer (the HEAT), the 1980s-era keyboards, guitar and electro-drums keep this song breezing along during a car journey.

13. “Knee Deep” Zac Brown Band – The ZBB is accomplished at creating feel-good songs perfect for warm weather road tripping. The bonus guest vocals by Jimmy Buffett put this one among the top songs of the summer.

14. “Summer Skin” Death Cab for Cutie – With “summer” in the title, this one lands on the list, but it’s Ben Gibbard’s emotive lyrics, rat-a-tat snare drum and bassline that make this a must-have for summer playlists.

15. “All Summer Long” Kid Rock – The Detroit-based Kid was raised on rock-and-roll and it shows in this 2007 smash that mixes in “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Werewolves of London” riffs for a road trip song worthy of a sunny sojourn.

16. “Walking on Sunshine” Katrina and the Waves – There’s a reason Jack Black’s character in “High Fidelity” opens up a Monday morning mix tape with this one-hit wonder. Also works for opening a summer road trip playlist.

17. “Roscoe” by Midlake – Who ever heard of a hit song with the word “stonecutters” in it? Well, Midlake did it. Through intricate guitar work and the driving rhythm section, Midlake created a song as perfect for a quiet night at home as it is blasting in your car and pushing you down the highway.

18. “Glad You Came” The Wanted – Pump up the volume on this former Top 40 No. 1 hit and like the song says, you’ll be glad you did.

19. “California Gurls” Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg – Perry’s perfection of pop makes this song, and really most of the stuff she does, perfect for cranking up the volume while rolling down the highway.

20. “California Girls” The Beach Boys – Another classic by the boys who defined the beach sound, this one heats up a harmonious take on the Golden State.

21. “Yellow” Coldplay – This UK-formed quartet has come a long way, and had numerous hits, since releasing this colorful song off their first album (Parachutes, 2000). But there’s something about “Yellow” that just says “open road.” “Look at the stars, look how they shine for you.”

22. “Soak Up the Sun” Sheryl Crow – This warm-weather anthem of 2002 still holds up in 2016 as the perfect musical accompaniment to cruising through summer.

23. “One Particular Harbour” Jimmy Buffett – Fins up for this one. Jimmy Buffett is one of those artists, like Marley and Kenny Chesney, whose music brings about good vibes and sparks sing-alongs to any summer road trip.

24. “Holiday” Vampire Weekend – A happy, upbeat number that gets you in the mood for summer vacation thanks to this quartet formed while attending Columbia University.

25. “Rolling in the Deep” Adele – Adele’s star has risen to new heights this year with her third album, but this song off her second release, “21”, speaks of a relationship that, “could have had it all, rolling in the deep.”

26. “You Gotta Believe” The Rocket Summer – Again, the band’s name begs for inclusion in this list, but this upbeat number comes with a feel-good vibe that is mood enhancing. Watch your speed when this jam comes on.

27. “When I Was Young” Nada Surf – With “surf” in the moniker, this group was a given to land on the list, and many tunes in their catalog could work as great summer road trip songs. This acoustic-infused ballad is a good one for cruising along a coast and reflecting.

28. “Back Down South” Kings of Leon – The cover image of the album this track comes from – 2010’s “Come Around Sundown” – features two palm trees on an island surrounded by water and backlit by the sun. The perfect visual to sum up a vacation getaway and this song helps audibly take you there.

29. “Summer Babe (Winter Version)” Pavement – A breezy, distorted guitar jam with the quirkiness one expects from this seminal indie rock band circa 1992.

30. “The Great Salt Lake” Band of Horses – Another group with a new record out this summer, this song from BoH’s 2006 debut is an ode to adventures waiting to be had by heading to your favorite body of water.

31. “Sunrise” Norah Jones – This mellow number from Ms. Jones’ 2004 debut works great for watching the sunrise (or set) and reveling in the beauty of Mother Nature.

32. “Begin the Begin” R.E.M. – The opening track from the 1986 classic album “Lifes Rich Pageant” when placed as an opening song for a road trip playlist kick-starts the journey with the perfect jangle.

33. “Big Bad Wolf” by Jessie Frye – Loud guitars. Pounding drums. Powerful vocals. Some songs are made to blast out loud while you and your friends sit at the pool all day. (Just make sure you check out all her other songs, too!)

34. “Road Trippin’” Red Hot Chili Peppers – Hailing from California, the Peppers have warm-weather, beach vibes in their blood and in their songs. Many of their tunes could make this list, but this one was chosen for its nod to the road trip and lyrics such as “fully loaded we’ve got snacks and supplies.” Look for the group’s new album dropping this summer.

35. “Wonderwall” Oasis – Possibly the biggest song to come out of the band of Gallagher brothers, the acoustic guitar and catchy chorus keep this classic relevant for today’s car cruising.

When his niece Olive (Abigail Breslin) learns she has a spot in a state beauty pageant, he joins the rest of the Hoover family in their eventful road trip to the competition. Crossing highways in their bright yellow Volkswagen, the Hoovers capture the best and worst elements of a typical family vacation. Road trips aren't all singalongs and snacks, and the Netflix original movie The Fundamentals of Caring demonstrates that. When pot dealer David (Jason Sudeikis) has to smuggle a supply of marijuana over the border, he enlists a series of neighbors (Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, and Will Poulter) to pose as his family, as one man going through customs alone looks more suspicious. While transporting the marijuana on a RV, they run into hilarious, unforeseen circumstances that encourage them to bond. If anything, the movie teaches audiences that people can make the best of any situation, so keep your head up if your trip takes a turn for the worst.

Best known for their comedic roles, Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski became an adorable indie couple in Away We Go . Rudolph's Verona is heavily pregnant when she and Krasinski's Burt learn that his parents are moving away from their area. Now without any family nearby, the couple decide to visit several different states where friends and family live in order to determine the best place for them to raise their baby. Packed with memorable cameos from stars like Allison Janney, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Jim Gaffigan, Away We Go is a more grounded, kindhearted story about travel.

You definitely have memories of watching this in middle school, but seeing it as an adult, you may still appreciate the hilarious ridiculousness of Are We There Yet? 's premise. Kids Lindsey and Kevin are experts at scaring away the men their mother Suzanne dates, but they're forced to get to know her newest prospect Nick (Ice Cube) when he has to bring them to meet Suzanne in Vancouver on New Year's Eve. The kids foil their plan for a smooth and easy flight, so the trio has to hit the road instead. It's a comedy of errors, but hopefully they're mistakes you'll never have to face.

As the ultimate family road trip story, National Lampoon's Vacation led to a series of similar films set in different places, but as always, the original is typically best. This follows the Griswold family on their cross-country trip to amusement park Walley World, but the journey proves more difficult than they expected. This movie may have ruined your expectations for a road trip when you were younger, but there are definitely some scenarios in it I'd rather see onscreen than IRL. Look out for a young Jane Krakowski as a Griswold relative.

As the search for the best summer vacation intensifies, more and more are searching for an escape from the digital chaos everyday life brings, according to a new report.

Forget about checking out those hot and crowded trendy cities for your next summer trip and instead think of peaceful, tranquil relaxation.

“In 2024, wellness travel will take over. As the hustle and bustle of daily life takes its toll, travelers seek digital detox and solace in serene landscapes and rejuvenating experiences,” the Pinterest Summer 2024 Travel Report read.

“Say goodbye to crowded cities and hello to off-the-beaten-path destinations that promise tranquility and self-discovery.”

“Quiet Life Travel” is this year’s hottest craze as people are searching for a “quieter, more serene lifestyle,” according to the new report.

This longing for simplicity has extended to travel — since last year, searches for “quiet places” and “calm places” have increased by 50% and 42% respectively,” search data on Pinterest found.

The travel report found “Quiet Life” gained over 530% more interest this year compared to 2023 as users are in need of a digital detox filled with nature destinations.

Many interested in the “Quiet Life” want to do it by themselves as “Solo travel” was also at the top of the travel trends.

“Solo travel emerges as a liberating choice, granting individuals the freedom to craft their itinerary, pace, and priorities without compromise.

“Whether basking in the tranquility of a secluded beach or meandering through serene countryside landscapes, these experiences contribute to self-care and overall well-being.”

Along with searching for “quiet life travel” Pinterest users also searched for “travel journal,” “glamping aesthetic” and “Wellness retreat.”

Travel experts recently revealed that a majority of Americans are planning a road trip this summer beginning Memorial Day weekend.

The anonymous survey from The Vacationer asked more than 1,000 American adults if and how they plan to travel this summer with nearly 82% of Americans planning to travel this summer, which could be more than 212 million adults throughout the season.

Hatchery Road Trip - Private John Allen!

Picture this: You're driving down the interstate, cruise control on, windows down, stereo blasting. It's a perfect 80 degrees, you don't have to work, and you've got the whole day ahead of you. You pull off the road and a beautiful vista lies in front of you. A pond sparkles in the sunshine, birds are chirping happily in the trees, and best of all...it's peaceful. You pop the trunk and pull out a fishing pole, that set of watercolors you've been meaning to use, your best pair of broken-in hiking boots, and breathe in the fresh summer air. But wait, where the heck are you?  

Is it a national park? If we were going on overall vibes, the answer might be yes.

Is it one of the nation's most underrated outdoor destinations...national fish hatcheries? Ding ding ding! We have a winner! The National Fish Hatchery System has been improving recreational fishing and restoring aquatic species since 1872 (uhhhh, yeah that makes them 150 years old!) and yet, lots of folks might not even know that their grounds are often open to the public and entry is FREE! The wonderful thing about fish hatcheries is that they offer something for everyone in your group...no more disgruntled sighs from the backseat! 

Each hatchery highlighted in our road trip series is over 100 years old and has four sections of information: 

🚙  Trip Highlights : This is where you'll find hatchery activity suggestions for different folks in your group. These aren't full lists, just some of the things we think are pretty cool. Before you hit the road, be sure to check each hatchery's web page for additional activities and we recommend calling ahead to check on their opening status and any possible closures. We've also got some good info on how and where to purchase a fishing license , if that's on your activity itinerary!

🚧  Detour : Is it really a road trip if you only go to one place? Well, yeah, but where's the fun in that? We've provided each hatchery with a nearby pit stop suggestion for the free spirits among us. (Full disclosure, besties: We haven't actually been to any of these spots and are in no way promoting them over other destinations, they just sound fun. Please do your research beforehand to check on fees, accessibility, travel restrictions, etc!)

Buckle those seatbelts, we’re taking you on a ride through some of the nation’s oldest hatcheries that you’ll definitely want to add to your summer road trip itineraries and they are free to the public. 

Private John Allen National Fish Hatchery - Mississippi

Private John Allen National Fish Hatchery , established in 1901, is a warmwater hatchery, meaning their water stays at a mad luxurious 75-85 degrees! They raise fish that are important to Mississippi, the Lower Mississippi River Alluvial Valley, and the Gulf Coast, including alligator gar, lake sturgeon, Gulf Coast striped bass, Gulf Coast walleye, largemouth bass, and bluegill, just to name a few. Their staff also travel across the country like aquatic habitat superheroes, removing dams and installing culverts to improve habitat and increase aquatic passage. 

🚙 Trip Highlights

Turns out Tupelo isn’t ONLY famous for its amazing hatchery, it also happens to be the birthplace of Elvis Presley! Visit the King of Rock and Roll’s childhood home or check out the small museum dedicated to his legacy.
