Travel Tour Expo Brief History

The PTAA Travel Tour Expo was established in 1993 mainly as an annual market for Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) members for discounted travel deals which have grown immensely thru the years.

During those early years, it was for the sole purpose that PTAA members could have a platform to offer discounted domestic and international travel deals along with other travel related products and merchandize, but now, it is considered as the country’s biggest and the most awaited annual travel and tourism event.

Visitors number had also grown throughout the years generating a big sales volume for all the exhibitors consisting of Travel Agencies & Tour Operators, Airlines, Hotels & Resorts, Food Concessionaires, Theme Parks, Entertainment, Associations, Embassies, National Tourism Organizations including our own Department of Tourism, Cruise Liners, Shipping, Travel Insurance Companies, Travel Essentials, Foreign-based Travel Agencies & Tour Operators, and other travel related entities. Sales of exhibitors have also grown proportionately. Promotions of this event have also elicited a lot of support from media and thru our sponsors.

TTE Visitor Profile targets the Travel & Tourism Trade Practitioners; Corporate and Business Travelers; Holiday Travelers; Incentive and Convention Planners; Government and Business Leaders; Direct Buyers as well as Investors.

Briefly the PTAA Travel Tour Expo started 30 years ago in one of the halls of Megatrade in SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City occupying 1, 348 square meters of space. Every year it started to grow that by 2005, it occupied all the halls of Megatrade measuring 3,878 square meters. In 2006, TTE moved to SMX Convention Center and used 4,565 square meters of their floor space. By 2014, TTE occupied the whole ground floor and another exhibition hall in the second floor totaling 11,030 square meters of selling space. In 2015, TTE then occupied the entire SMX Convention Center except for one hall in the second floor. The total space is equivalent to 13,880 square meters. But then for the succeeding years, TTE has been occupying the entire Halls and Function Rooms of the SMX Convention Center which was only disrupted during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Year 2023 is a celebration of TTE’s 30th Year, the “Pearl Anniversary”, with more than 300 Exhibitors occupying 671 booths with a total space of 11,980 square meters. This  milestone is in cooperation with the generosity and full support of the Department of Tourism (DOT); Tourism Promotions Board (TPB); Philippine Airlines; CITIBANK; AirSWIFT; United Airlines; PLDT; Hotel 101; Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA); and Guam Visitors Bureau.  Other events to look forward to during the 3-day Expo are Raffle Draws, Corporate Game Shows, Entertainment, Exhibitors and Sponsors Presentations, Cultural Dance Competition, and Conferences.

Simultaneous with the TravelTour Expo is the conduct of 8th International Travel Trade Expo (iTTE) to be held in the same venue. The iTTE is an innovation that they added to TTE’s successful event in 2015. It’s a B2B travel trade mart devoted towards tapping the growing Philippine market for overseas travel exclusive to travel agents and tour operators to network with local and international travel-related suppliers.

PTAA moves on with renewed goals

philippines travel agencies association

Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) is emerging stronger from an internal crisis, with the new board of trustees outlining plans to enhance and improve it moving forward.

Newly-elected president, Mariegel Tankiang Manotok, said a membership drive is ongoing to bring in new members and bring back those who did not renew their membership.

The 648 members pre-pandemic that dwindled to 299 in 2023 is slowly going up to 400 plus members and targeted to reach 1,000 by 2025.

The organisation of the yearly Travel Tour Expo (TTE) – the country’s biggest – is being studied now, to explore the possibility of it being hosted not just in Manila but also in the Visayas and Mindanao. Manotok said instead of them coming to Manila, PTAA will go to them.

This year’s TTE, held from February 2-4 at SMX Manila, will be the biggest and grandest in all aspects, said Patty Chiong, past PTAA president and chair of TTE 2024. The two exhibition floors are sold out with 702 exhibitor booths from 25 countries.

The new board is also pushing for more CSR initiatives, such as looking into the purchase of boats for boatmen in Pagsanjan, Laguna; sustainable tourism training for communities; and collaborations with slow food (a global movement acting together to ensure good, clean and fair food for all) movement in the provinces, among others.

To unite members, Manotok shared: “In the coming months, we will be organising workshops, brainstorming sessions, and interactive forums to facilitate the exchange of ideas for us to inspire, empower, and unite all our members.

“PTAA thrives when every member feels valued and engaged. We will implement membership programmes to enhance communication, collaboration, inclusivity, and expansion within our community. By fostering a supportive and diverse environment, we strengthen the collective voice of PTAA and create a platform for innovation, growth, and shared success.”

While a problem-free journey cannot be guaranteed, Manotok stressed that “our focus will be on fortifying ourselves with a solid foundation to effectively address any future challenges”.

“The key here is that we are willing to serve our members with passion, dedication and true spirit of service for the love of PTAA. Together, we can build a future where our association adapts to change and thrives in it,” she added.

Outlining the vision for PTAA, Manotok said: “We will actively engage with policymakers and advocate for policies that support the growth and sustainability of the travel industry. By serving as a united voice, we can influence decisions that impact our profession and ensure that the interests of travel agents are well-represented at local, national, and international levels.”

Travel associations appeal for more support for the tourism industry

The Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) and other travel groups are seeking for more assistance from the Department of Tourism.

In a letter to the DOT, the PTAA noted “ongoing financial challenges and impact to business” from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are one with the department’s endeavor towards recovery and to support businesses severely hit by the continuing coronavirus disease,” PTAA President Michelle Taylan wrote in the letter addressed to DOT Sec. Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.

PTAA

The group also seeks discounted lifeline packages for other recurring monthly bills that need to be settled while on operation. This includes utilities and telecommunication payment dues.

“You can just imagine the financial burden of having to pay off these otherwise usual items, without actual income,” Taylan said. “We are hoping to give tourism industry workers a bit of relief kahit sa simpleng mga bayarin kada buwan.”

The PTAA launched its “Bills Support Care” campaign, taking inspiration from the various community pantries being set up in different parts of the country.

The association expects momentum for the tourism industry to take off following the vaccination of the A4 priority group which includes tourism workers.

“We see some silver lining as vaccination of economic frontliners begin. It would just be a matter of time until we see tourism boom again. But until such time, we hope to provide whatever help we can to ailing businesses,” Taylan said.

Leisure travel to and from the NCR Plus to areas under more relaxed restrictions or those in modified general community quarantine has been allowed, but limited to point-to-point travel.

Travelers aged below 18 years old and those older than 65 must present a negative RT-PCR test result. Swab test requirements of those in-between age groups will depend on their destination’s local government unit protocol.

Aside from the PTAA and TCP, other travel associations like the PATA, NAITAS, QCTAA, PATS, ALTTA, ATTAP, ATTA, BAPTTA, BATFOI, BITATOA, BSTA, BOSZTAA, CTTA, DTAA, ITATOA, NEATOP, PTOTAA, QuePATTA, TATToO, R1TTA, and the RTAA join the call to seek assistance for travel and tourism workers gravely affected this pandemic.

Ready to enter your travel era? Here’s what to expect from the PTAA Travel Tour Expo 2024

By Kara Santos Published Jan 20, 2024 12:32 pm

Mark your calendars, travel junkies. The 31st Travel Tour Expo (TTE) and the 9th International Travel Trade Expo will be coming back this February to address all your revenge travel needs.

With the theme “World within reach,” this year's expo will take place from Feb. 2 to 4 at the SMX Convention Center Manila in Pasay City. The annual event organized by the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) will once again showcase the latest travel destinations, with travel deals and exclusive discounts up for grabs.

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming event.

Over 200 local and international exhibitors

More than 200 exhibitors and 702 booths are expected to participate in the travel expo. There will be booths from airlines, domestic, and international travel agencies, tour operators, hotels and resorts, cruise liners and shipping companies, and more. The event expects a turnout of 100,000 travel enthusiasts.

According to PTAA, there will be at least 68 sellers and 220 registered buyers coming from Australia, Balkan, China, Dubai, Egypt, France, Greece, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Morocco, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, UAE, the US, and Vietnam.

Early access for cardholders

E vent gates of the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia Complex will open at 10:00 a.m. on the first day, and 9:30 a.m. on the second day. However, Unionbank cardholders will get early access and may avail of special rates from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Feb. 2.

Four halls will be occupied on the second floor of the SMX Convention Center for travel boards, agents, and businesses. All the halls will be open to the public on Feb. 2 and 3.

Packages and promos to the hottest destinations

Travel enthusiats can expect a diverse range of travel packages, accommodations, flights, exclusive discounts, and other travel-related services. The expo will offer packages and promos for new destinations, affordable tours, transportation, and accommodations, with various payment options to cater to every type of traveler.

According to PTTA, among the top destinations for local and foreign tourists within the Philippines are Palawan, Boracay, and Bohol, with Batanes emerging as a rising destination.

Korea and Japan top the list of international destinations that Filipinos want to travel to along with Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore for first-time local travelers. Meanwhile, high-end travelers often opt for European destinations.

Human connection from travel agencies

While booking trips via digital platforms has made travel more convenient, the travel expo will give attendees a chance to speak to travel agents who can provide personalized service and explain travel deals and packages more thoroughly.

Travel agents can provide a “human connection” and expertise to answer questions on specific destinations, misconnections, missing luggage, and insurance, among others.

In a press conference in Makati on Jan. 18, PTAA noted the rise of new travel trends such as gig tripping where fans travel to foreign countries to watch concerts; and set-jetting , which involves traveling to destinations featured as film locations in popular movies and television shows, which travel agencies can customize packages around.

Domestic and international flight deals

Travel enthusiasts can browse around and book flights from at least 19 airlines flying to different local and international destinations. Airlines include flag carriers and budget airlines of top destinations like South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and Vietnam, as well as Australia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

PTAA president Patria Chiong leads members onward to tourism industry’s recovery

  • BusinessMirror

  • 3 minute read

‘Alone we can do little, together we can do a lot,” this is the rallying call of the newly-installed Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) President Patria “Pattie” T. Chiong, as the largest and most prestigious travel agency association in the country gears up to the 30th Travel Tour Expo 2023 and the 8th International Travel Trade Expo 2023 from February 3-5, 2023.

“It is without a doubt that the tourism and travel sector was one of the hardest hit by the pandemic. Through the tough times, PTAA did its best to take care of its members and continued to be of service to the public. We stood together united during the good times, and more so during the challenges brought by pandemic of the previous years. Slowly, the industry is on the road to recovery; we have seen the return of travelers and the rising demand for products and services involving tourism and travel. Now, we must face these new challenges.  This is the time we must work together, link arms, and help one another,” adds Chiong.

One of these challenges, according to Chiong, is the rising demand for more flights for international and local travel. While this development comes as a good sign of an industry in recovery, PTAA, along with other industry players, must meet the growing travel requirements of the public. “While we welcome this problem, we are challenged to cope up and we are trying our very best to do just that,” says Chiong.

In 2023, under her leadership, travelers can also expect new destinations being offered by travel and tour operators under PTAA. “We have several familiarization trips lined-up so we can introduce new trips and packaged tours. We are also focusing on visa-free countries like the 10 member nations of the ASEAN. They’re good destinations with less hassle to the travel agencies and the travelers, too,” adds Chiong.

A traveler with a passion herself, the well-traveled Chiong shares that her favorite destinations are Scandinavian countries such as Finland, Denmark and Norway. As a veteran practitioner in the industry, she is currently the Vice President of West Gate Travel and Tours Inc. with more than 40 years of experience in the travel and tourism sector.

In 1974, Chiong first worked at Philippine Airlines as Chinese Interpreter and then as airport station supervisor. From 1979-1991, she was manager for China, Hong Kong and Singapore and retired from PAL Express in 2009 as its Senior Vice President for administration.

Later, she joined Guatson International Travel and Tours in 2010. She is the past president of SKAL Manila and past international counsellor for SKAL Philippines, an affiliate of SKAL International, a global organization of travel and tourism professionals. She has successfully won the bid for Manila to host the SKAL Asian Congress in 2015.

Aside from travel and tourism, Chiong is also very active in socio-civic activities. She is the past district secretary for Rotary International District 3830 and past president of the Zonta Club of Fort Bonifacio.

She is a recipient of several awards as a student, airline professional and socio-civic advocate. She hails from Jolo, Sulu and completed her studies in Notre Dame of Jolo College and Ateneo de Manila University.

For PTAA, she is the former Executive Vice President from 2017-2018, Secretary General in 2021, and currently a member of the Board of Ethics. She represented PTAA as its official representative to the Federation of ASEAN Travel Associations (FATA) from 2015-2017, and alternate representative to ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA) from 2015-2017.

Chiong is also a member of the Organizing Committee for PTAA TravelTour Expo 2023.

“We are doing this because it is a very, very good policy to invest in success. So, make the most of it. Make the Philippines proud. Make the Filipinos proud,” the President said during the Tourism Champions Challenge Awarding Ceremony at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City on Monday.

“Each winner deserves this additional reward towards building infinite capabilities to make everything better,” Marcos said. “It is also a reaffirmation of my belief that local governments are our indispensable and active partners in national development,” he further stated.

President Marcos assured the sector of the national government’s continued support, as he vowed to build more infrastructure, implement tourism-friendly policies, and arouse interest from global audience.

The Tourism Champions Challenge is a step in the right direction, an activity that elicits creativity that could magnify the magnetism of Philippine tourism industry, he noted.

At the same time, President Marcos told industry players and other stakeholders to highlight, not only the country’s beauty and physical wonderment, but also the warmth, affection, and love “that Filipinos always bring to their relationship.”

“We show the world that we have long been ready to love them back,” he said.

Marcos commended Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, the DOT, and TIEZA for their exemplary work in carrying out the program.

Last year, the Philippines welcomed 5.5 million inbound tourists, a 100 percent jump from the 2022 record. Registering more than 1.2 million tourist arrivals in the first two months of 2024, the DOT has expressed optimism in sustaining the gains it made. The agency targets to welcome 7.7 million inbound tourists this year. PND

THE PHILIPPINES VIES FOR 7 WARDS AS ASIA’S BEST FOR THE 2024 WORLD TRAVEL AWARDS

Manila, Philippines—The Philippines continues to be recognized as one of Asia’s best country destinations for tourism as it competes for at least seven accolades at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2024.

This year, the country is nominated as Asia’s Leading Beach Destination, Asia’s Leading Dive Destination, and Asia’s Leading Island Destination. The historic Walled City of Intramuros is nominated again as Asia’s Leading Tourist Attraction, while Boracay is nominated as Asia’s Leading Luxury Island Destination, and Cebu as Asia’s Leading Wedding Destination.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) is nominated again as Asia’s Leading Tourist Board.

“These nominations underscore the dedicated efforts of the Department of Tourism since the inception of the Marcos Administration. We express gratitude to WTA for providing The Philippines a platform to continuously showcase our diverse tourism offerings not only within Asia but on the global stage, but most importantly, we express our thanks to our tourism stakeholders who continue to safeguard the myriad of tourism gems in the Philippines for all the world to love and enjoy,” stated Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco.

“While winning these accolades adds prestige to our endeavors, they also translate into livelihood opportunities for millions of Filipinos whose well-being depends on tourism. We aim to maintain and surpass the strides we’ve made since taking office, ensuring sustained growth in the country’s tourism sector,” she emphasized.

Secretary Frasco noted that 2023 has been a banner year for The Philippines with the country clinching the World’s Leading Dive Destination for the fifth year since 2019. Last year, the Philippine capital, Manila, earned the accolade as the World’s Leading City Destination.

A Global Tourism Resilience award was also bagged by the country last year, a significant award about the “global leadership, pioneering vision, and innovation to overcome critical challenges and adversity,” and by other four countries who became recipients of the inaugural award from the WTA. It said that the awardees will serve as benchmarks for best practices in tourism resilience.

The Philippines was also named the Destination of the Year by online travel platform TripZilla as well as Asia’s Best Cruise Destination by the WTA.

Jetstar to revive direct flights between Singapore and Clark in June

Singapore-based Jetstar Asia said Thursday it will revive direct flights between Singapore and Clark starting June 16 this year.

Jetstar Asia chief executive John Simeone said the move reinforced Jetstar Asia’s commitment to expanding their Southeast Asian network and providing enhanced connectivity and a wide range of travel options for its customers.

“Our services to Clark are backed by popular demand, not only for holiday makers but those wanting to visit family and friends,” Simeone said.

“We’re excited to add this popular destination, responding to demand, providing our customers with more incredible low-cost travel options and supporting the travel and tourism industries in these two critical markets,” he said.

Jetstar Asia will offer four weekly return services between Singapore and Clark in June, increasing to five weekly services starting Oct. 18, 2024.

The route will use Jetstar Asia’s growing fleet of Airbus A320s and supported by its significant recruitment drive aimed at meeting the growing demand for travel within the region.

Noel Manankil, president and chief executive of Luzon International Premiere Airport Development Corp. (LIPAD), manager and operator of Clark International Airport, said that they are delighted to welcome Jetstar flights back at Clark International Airport (CRK).

“Clark Airport has always been a home to Jetstar and we are happy to serve their passengers again. This partnership provides passengers the opportunity to experience a seamless and memorable airport journey,” Manankil said.

Mabuhay! SEA Welcomes Announcement of Nonstop Service to Manila on Philippine Airlines

The Port of Seattle welcomes Philippine Airlines’ announcement of upcoming nonstop service between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) in Manila, Philippines. Starting in October, SEA passengers will have three flight options per week to travel directly to the archipelagic nation.

“Washington state is home to the country’s fourth-largest Filipino population. For over 100 years, Filipinos have contributed to the region’s arts, business, and political leadership,” said Port of Seattle Commission Vice President Toshiko Hasegawa. “Nonstop service to Manila has long been one of our most frequently requested routes, and we’re thrilled that this new flight will not only serve the Puget Sound’s Filipino community but anyone who is interested in exploring the rich history, beauty, and hospitality of the Philippines.”

Manila is this region’s largest unserved international market, and the nonstop flight on Philippine Airlines — also known as PAL — will serve the tens of thousands of travelers who journey to the Philippines each year, whether it’s to visit friends and relatives or to explore the country’s growing tourism scene.

“We’ve been looking forward to this announcement for some time and are excited to welcome Philippine Airlines to our region,” said Lance Lyttle, Managing Director of the Port’s Aviation Division. “This new direct route will offer valuable economic impact to our region and open up opportunities for outbound travelers visiting the Philippines and beyond, including Seattle’s Sister City, Cebu, Philippines. It will also serve as an important connector between our two communities for business and leisure travel.”

“Philippine Airlines is happy to say, ‘Mabuhay, Seattle!’ We are proud to welcome Seattle to our growing U.S. route network,” said PAL President and Chief Operating Officer Captain Stanley K. Ng. “Our Manila – Seattle – Manila flights give us a valuable opportunity to promote our beautiful island country as a flourishing tourist and business destination for American travelers. We also look forward to serving Filipinos who hope to reunite with family members or experience new travel adventures in the vibrant U.S. Pacific Northwest.”

SEA is PAL’s eighth North American destination. Passengers traveling to MNL on the airline’s Boeing 777-300ER aircraft can also connect to PAL’s regional network, including cities like Cebu, Davao, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur. Marcos vows tourism support, travel fair sees sales topping ’22.

Ma. Stella F. Arnaldo / Special to the BusinessMirror

PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. assured the tourism industry of his administration’s continued commitment, as he acknowledged it as a “strong pillar of our economic growth.”

In a speech at the opening of the 3-day 34th Philippine Travel Mart (PTM) on September 1, the President said: “As you continue to invest your energies and passion into your trade and craft, you can be assured of this administration’s fervent support for the entire tourism industry. Policies and programs are underway to create a wholesome climate and stable foundation through the upgrading of critical tourism infrastructure, capacity-building for our workforce and entrepreneurs, fostering a more business-friendly environment, and [improving] the security and the rule of law in our country.”

He also recognized the tourism industry’s contribution to the economy,  “providing livelihood opportunities to more than five million of our kababayan [compatriot]. With the innate beauty of our 7,641 islands and our people, our tourism will remain to be a vital economic sector for our country in the decades to come.”

Government tourism agencies, however, are allocated just P3 billion in 2024, about 20 percent less than their approved budget this year, and access to P1.27 billion in marketing funds next year. Similarly, support for the construction and repair of roads and other infrastructure to tourism destinations is just P13.97 billion next year, 21 percent lower than the budget in 2023.

MEANWHILE, participating stakeholders were encouraged by the sales and foot traffic at the PTM, held over the weekend at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

Fe Abling-Yu, president of the Philippine Tour Operators Association (Philtoa), told the BusinessMirror there was an estimated “30-40 percent increase in foot traffic” at the travel fair this year, from last year’s 48,738 attendees. But there were still no initial sales figures for the entire event, although she expressed optimism it would exceed last year’s P16 million.

She noted though, on an individual basis, “Sales in Ilocos Norte were high in terms of tour packages, accommodations, and products.” For another, the Bellevue Group, with hotels in Alabang, Quezon City, and Bohol, racked up some P500,000 in sales, she added.

The travel fair, organized by Philtoa, brought together nearly 200 exhibitors from all 17 regions of the Philippines, from hotels to resorts, travel agencies, tour operators, and tourism offices under one roof. The one-stop shop made it easy for patrons to check out vacation packages from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao and avail themselves of discounted rates from sellers.

‘Make new discoveries’

“IF there is anything that the recent pandemic restrictions have taught us, it is to love our freedom to travel, our freedom to explore. Let us take advantage of this freedom to make new discoveries,” Abling-Yu said at the opening of the travel fair on Friday.

For her part, Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said the Philippine Travel Mart is “another driving force to push the tourism industry closer to its pre-pandemic levels and further to even exceed it.” There were 3.63 million international travelers who arrived from January to August 30 this year,  just 36 percent less than the arrivals during the same period in pre-pandemic 2019, according to data from the Department of Tourism.

The PTM began as a DOT initiative in 1989, meant primarily to cater both to trade and the consumer market. In 1994, the Philtoa took over the event  and has organized and staged it  as its flagship project.

DOT adds golf tourism in industry portfolio

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Tourism is promoting golf tourism in a bid to widen its tourism industry portfolio.

During the first Philippine golf summit last November 28, Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco highlighted the potential of golf tourism to boost the Philippine tourism as the country has more than 100 golf courses in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Apart from this, the country is also considered a home of one of the oldest golf courses in Asia. Iloilo’s Santa Barbara, built in 1907, is touted as the “oldest” golf course of the country.

“Golf tourism represents a promising frontier for the Philippines and this summit highlights our proactive approach in understanding, nurturing, listening to the golf tourism industry and developing this niche as part of our tourism industry portfolio,” Frasco said.

It is also seen to contribute billions to the economy and help place the Philippines as a “global hub for sports tourism.”

The tourism chief said that it is about time for the government and the private sector to work together to tap the full potential of golf tourism.

“Today marks the Philippines’ long overdue foray into the multi-billion golf tourism industry that will no doubt have an enormous impact on the Philippine economy. And it’s about time that the government and the private sector come together to converge and to collaborate,” Frasco said.

With the conclusion of the first Philippine Golf Tourism Summit, Frasco is bullish that it can pave the way for a government tourism policy on golf tourism.

“We are hopeful that this first Philippine Golf Tourism Summit can be a catalyst and serve as a platform to gather insights, recommendations, and concerns, paving the way for informed decisions and strategies as well as a unified national government tourism policy towards golf tourism that can be aligned with our local government units all over the country,” she said.

The summit, organized by the DOT’s Office of Product Development of Golf Tourism and Special Projects, had variety of panelists from the golf industry.

These include Business Mirror Golf editor Mike Besa who tackled “The Potential of Golf Tourism”; Outlast Sports and Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Salauddin SS who discussed “The Right Market”; and Philippine Tour Operator Association President Fe Abling-Yu who talked about “First Tee With the Tourism Industry”; and Lipa, Batangas Vice Governor and founder of Golf Batangas Mark Leviste.

DOT Seeks more direct flights to attract more foreign tourist

As the Department of Tourism is eyeing 7.7 million tourist arrivals this year, they are now in talks with global airline operators to bring in more foreign tourists.

This was after Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco revealed that the Philippines is currently lagging in terms of flight seats, as airline companies do not have direct flights to the country.

“Frankly speaking, when I was at the Tourism Industry Minister’s Meeting in Laos, I made a quick comparison of the number of seats and number of flights between the Philippines and its direct competitors in Southeast Asia. From our computation, we (currently) ranked at number 6, which is in direct correlation with our numbers in terms of international arrivals, therefore, the need for more direct flights and other such types of accessibility into the Philippines is of absolute importance, as we do not enjoy the inherent advantage of our neighbors of being landlocked with the other ASEAN nations,” Frasco explained during the General Membership Meeting of the Philippine Tour Operators Association, Inc. at the Makati Diamond Residences in Makati City on Wednesday.

The country received 5,450,557 international tourists in 2023, earning P484.54 billion in terms of tourism receipts.

She said with the clamor to have more flights going to the Philippines, aviation partners are responsive to the calls.

“Philippine Airlines has announced new routes domestically and is adding more flights to our tourist destinations, and also Cebu Pacific’s efforts of ensuring that more Filipinos will be able to fly with more reasonable prices. Also, United Airlines, which has high-demand flights from the US to Manila, said they will add more flights not only in Manila but to Cebu and our other international airports,” Frasco said.

Meanwhile, PAL Vice President for Sales Bud Britanico, in an interview with reporters during the same event, stated that management of the Flag Carrier is contemplating adding flights from Europe that will depend on the aircraft availability.

“We are studying it. As mentioned by our President and COO Stanley Ng, new routes will depend on the arrival of new planes in 2025 onwards. That is the plan to consider certain routes in Europe. We are also choosing some countries to have more flights, especially those countries that have a significant number of Filipinos, for example, in the Schengen area such as Italy and France,” Britanico told reporters.

PAL recently announced that it had firmed up the purchase of nine (9) brand-new Airbus A350-1000 long-haul aircraft for its signature routes to North America and potentially to Europe. These 380-seater new-generation jets, to be delivered starting in 2025, will be the most advanced to fly the Philippine skies. The A350-1000 acquisition will put PAL firmly on the road toward operating one of the youngest and most modern widebody fleets in Asia.

PHILTOA’s plans

Meanwhile, PHILTOA, Inc. president Arjun Shroff said his group is focused on major endeavors towards uplifting the stance of its member tour operators and travel agents.

Key priorities for this year are the continuity of the annual Philippine Travel Mart, embracing the digitization process, and training and education, and product developments.

“We will collaborate with the DoT, Commission on Higher Education, and the Tourism Promotions Board in enhancing the working programs so that we can hone people ready for work once they come up with the institution instead of retraining them,” Shroff said.

Also, Shroff said they are collaborating with the local airline industry for the airlines to have a pricing policy for everyone to travel, domestically and internationally at very reasonable prices.

PHILTOA, Inc. is an organization of tour operators and allied members actively involved in the advocacy of responsible tourism.

Founded on 12 June 1986, non-stock and non-profit organization, with a membership that includes travel agencies, hotels, resorts, transportation companies, handicraft stores, and other tourism-oriented establishments and associations.

Direct flights to and from India pushed to boost tourism

Philippine aviation officials are discussing possible direct flights to and from India with two Indian airlines to serve the growing market of Indian tourists to the Philippines and Filipinos who want to travel to India.

Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said discussions are underway between the country’s aviation authority and the Indian airlines

“So, we’re not close to the idea of negotiating with other airlines from other countries, especially India, as we’re looking at India as having vast potential in terms of attracting their tourists from the Philippines,” she said at the sidelines of the first general membership meeting of the Philippines Tour Operators Association (Philtoa) held at the Makati Diamond Residences Wednesday.

“We have been very grateful to our partners in the aviation sector. They have been very responsive to these requests (for more direct flights),” she said.

Frasco designated new Philtoa president Arjun Shroff to represent the Philippines to the Outbound Travel Mart Exhibit in India, in coordination with the Department of Tourism (DOT), in order to tap the Indian market.

Frasco said she cannot disclose, yet, the identities of the two Indian airlines since discussions with the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) are still underway.

Shroff said there has been great interest coming from Indian tourists to visit the Philippines.

“As I’m from India, I am also looking forward to direct flights from India and back because this is going to give a great surge of tourists, though we already have a very good positioning in India,” he said

The Indian travel market is being served by Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Malaysian Airlines, Air Asia and Thai Airways, all offering non-direct flights to India via Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand.

Philippines Airlines (PAL) has not yet launched flights to India “and if they take a chance to do three flights a week travels a week, at least it will give impetus for group travel to stand.”

He said Philtoa has proposed to Frasco to convince authorities to give slots to local Indian airlines to launch direct flights to and from India.

He added local Indian airlines have a good flight plan of 5 1/2 hours non-stop to India compared to 10 to 12 hours of other other airlines.

He added there is a growing number of Indian tourists coming to the Philippines. In 2023, travelers from India have reached 100,000 and the expectation is that this will further increase in 2024 especially if direct flights will be launched within the year.

Why Choose a Travel Agency in the Philippines?

Travel agencies play a crucial role in crafting memorable travel experiences. They possess the local know-how, connections, and resources to make your trip effortless and enjoyable. Let's delve into why you should consider a travel agency for your next Filipino adventure.

Benefits of Using a Travel Agency

Time and Effort Savings: The travel agencies take the hassle out of planning. From booking flights and accommodations to arranging transportation and sightseeing activities, they handle it all. This allows you to save time and avoid stress, letting you focus solely on enjoying the experience.

Customized Experiences: Travel agencies can tailor trips according to your preferences. Whether you prefer adventurous outdoor activities or tranquil beach holidays, they can create a personalized itinerary that fits your travel style perfectly.

Insider Knowledge: Travel agencies have in-depth knowledge of the local scene. They can recommend lesser-known attractions, off-the-beaten-track locations, and unique cultural experiences that you might otherwise miss.

Personal Anecdotes or Examples

Let me share a personal experience. On my trip to the Philippines, I enlisted the services of a local travel agency. What struck me was their attention to detail and personal touch. They suggested a visit to the Chocolate Hills in Bohol, an attraction I hadn't heard of before.

Chocolate Hills in Bohol, Philippines

The sight of over a thousand symmetrical, grass-covered limestone mounds, turning chocolate brown in the dry season, was surreal. Without the agency's local insight, I would have missed out on this mesmerizing spectacle.

Safety and Risk Management

Travel agencies can also provide peace of mind regarding safety. In unfamiliar territories, unforeseen situations can arise. Whether it's a sudden change of weather at a beach resort or an unexpected closure of an attraction due to maintenance, travel agencies can navigate these disruptions. They have contingency plans in place and can swiftly provide alternative arrangements to ensure your trip remains smooth. This is especially valuable in a diverse country like the Philippines, where each island offers a unique set of attractions, cultures, and climates.

Travel Safety

The content herein is based on my personal experiences and insights gained over the years. It's important to remember that each person's travel needs and preferences are unique, and what works for one might not work for another. That's where the versatility and flexibility of travel agencies shine, and why I consider them a valuable ally in my journeys.

Keys to Consider When Choosing Travel Agencies in the Philippines

Tour operators remain responsible for their services. Although their roles sometimes overlap with travel agents, they can market directly to customers. Similarly, travel agents can curate and promote their own packages to clients. Making the right choice of a travel agency can be the difference between a memorable trip and an unfortunate experience. Here are a few factors to consider when selecting a travel agency in the Philippines.

Travel Agencies in the Philippines

Travel Safety

Safety is paramount when traveling. A reliable travel agency should have a strong focus on traveler's safety, providing useful advice, and ensuring that all services, including transportation and accommodations, meet safety standards. They should also have a swift response mechanism for any emergencies that may arise during your trip.

Expertise with Local Knowledge

A travel agency's local expertise is another crucial factor to consider. This includes understanding the best times to visit various destinations, knowing the local customs and culture, and having access to local resources. An agency with strong local knowledge can provide an authentic and enriching travel experience that you might not get by planning the trip on your own.

Convenience

Convenience plays a big role in enhancing your overall travel experience. Look for an travel agent that provides a seamless experience, from inquiry and booking to trip execution. This might include things like an easy-to-navigate website, convenient payment methods, a responsive customer service team, and personalized services that cater to your specific needs and preferences.

Range of Services Offered

The range of services offered by the travel agent is another important factor. A full-service agency that can handle all aspects of your trip, including airfare, accommodation, tours, transport, and even visa assistance, can save you a lot of time and hassle.

Price and Value for Money

While price is an important factor, the cheapest option may not always provide the best value. Consider what's included in the package and assess if it offers good value for your money. A slightly pricier package that includes all services, offers great experiences, and ensures your safety might provide better value in the long run.

Navigating the Online Presence of Travel Agencies

With the internet being a major source of information, it's important to evaluate a travel agency's online presence.

Navigating the Online Presence of Travel Agencies in the Philippines

Hotel and Resorts Reservations Vacation Packages to Asia

Check out the agency's online platforms for their vacation packages. Look for details about hotel and resort reservations in the Philippines and other Asian countries. Read through descriptions, check the inclusions, compare prices, and review terms and conditions. User reviews can also provide helpful insights.

International Tour Packages

If you're a resident of the Philippines looking for outbound travel options, check the agency's offerings for international tour packages. An travel agent with a wide range of international tours indicates strong global connections and a broad service range.

International Air Transport Association (IATA)

The agency's affiliation with recognized international organizations like the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a good sign of credibility. IATA accreditation ensures that the travel agent adheres to industry standards and best practices, providing an extra layer of assurance for travelers.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can make an informed decision while choosing a travel agent for your next adventure in the Philippines.

Travel Agencies and the Impact of COVID-19

The global pandemic has caused a seismic shift in the travel industry. The once-thriving sector faced unprecedented challenges as countries closed their borders and travel restrictions became the new norm. Yet, amidst these adversities, travel agencies in the Philippines have demonstrated resilience and adaptability.

COVID-19

Many agencies pivoted to offer virtual tours, allowing travel enthusiasts to explore new destinations from the safety of their homes. Others have focused on promoting local tourism, encouraging Filipinos to discover the beauty of their own country.

Moreover, travel agencies have elevated their safety measures to ensure the health and wellbeing of travelers. This includes organizing trips to destinations with high health and safety standards, coordinating with suppliers who uphold rigorous sanitation protocols, and providing up-to-date travel advisories to clients.

Pre-trip health screenings, smaller travel groups, private transfers, contactless check-ins, and provision of sanitation essentials have become common features in holiday packages and bespoke services. By adopting these measures, travel agencies are playing their part in restoring traveler confidence and shaping the new normal in travel.
