Neighborhood church, living monument, by yaël ksander, posted october 11, 2010.

Known by its tower rising at the corner of Third and Crawford Streets, Terre Haute’s Allen Chapel has played a critical role in African-American history.
Recognized by the National Register of Historic Places , the structure was a congregation’s “new church” when it was rebuilt in 1913. A century later, it has endured to become the oldest functioning black church in the western part of the state.
Bishop William Paul Quinn organized Terre Haute’s first black church in 1837. A small white house to the west of the current church housed the African Methodist Episcopalian parish.
Allen Chapel was named for Richard Allen, the slave who founded the AME Church in Philadelphia in 1787.
At a time when education was severely restricted for African-American residents of Indiana, a school operated out of Allen Chapel’s basement. The minister who established the school would go on to greater renown as the nation’s first African-American senator. Hiram Rhoads Revel represented Mississippi in 1870 and 1871.
The first black person to graduate from high school in Terre Haute attended the Allen Chapel grade school, as did the first black teacher in Terre Haute. Allen Chapel school alumnus James Sidney Hinton eventually served as the first African-American in the Indiana legislature.
While children learned their letters in the basement, Allen Chapel was home to another sort of underground activity. Slaves escaping Southern bondage made the church a regular stop on their route. A tunnel connected the old church to the Wabash River, where refugees would stow away on lumber boats headed for Canada.
The cornerstone of the current church was laid in 1870, but the sanctuary was rebuilt after the Easter Sunday tornado, and resulting fire, in 1913. When Indiana’s African Methodist Episcopalian churches held their 35th annual conference in 1874, the Allen Chapel played host. Over the years, black leaders from Frederick Douglas to Jackie Robinson have spoken from the chapel’s pulpit.
Since 1990, a phalanx of foundations, corporations and private donors has supported the restoration of Allen Chapel’s 1913 structure. The preservation extends to the chapel’s 1905 Verney Pipe Organ, the Iowa manufacturer’s only instrument still installed in its original location
With special thanks to Char Minnette of Friends of Historic Allen Chapel.

St. Stephen's Episcopal Church
215 N. 7th, Terre Haute, Indiana
Who Are We?
St. Stephen’s is a medium-sized church in the heart of Terre Haute, Indiana. We love gathering in our beautiful historic building for worship, but we also value our involvement with the greater community. Music is an integral part of our spiritual lives; we chant the psalms and bring in local musicians to enhance special services. We also cherish our life together and find that, for us, food and fellowship frequently go hand in hand.
We are an Episcopal church, one of only two in our immediate area. We are part of the Diocese of Indianapolis, the Episcopal Church in the USA (ECUSA), and the worldwide Anglican Communion. (Click here for more information about the Episcopal church.)
We occupy a distinctive location, located across the street from Indiana State University and not far from three other colleges/universities in the community. We are an easy walk from downtown, nestled between two other churches. Click here for a map and directions or here for answers to frequently asked questions.
We are a small-medium-sized parish, but we strive to make a mark on our community, and we take seriously our call to be Jesus’ representatives here in Terre Haute. We are a people of strong faith, proud of our history and our traditions but open to the possibilities of change. We are an open-minded and diverse group—young and old, married and single, gay and straight . We try to be friendly, hospitable, compassionate, and inclusive to those who show up in our pews—we open our doors to all—and we are eager to welcome new members.
We are also a people in transition—on the journey to be transformed in God’s image and learn what God is calling us to be in this particular place and time. (Click here for information about our recently completed rector search and our vision for the future.) We hope you’ll consider being part of our adventure!

“She was the sun” | Loved ones remember ISU student Zinyetta Morgan
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — “She was the sun, and you can’t dim the sun.”
Being compared to the sun is rather high praise, and it is just the beginning of the loving anecdotes Zinyetta Morgan’s loved ones had to share days after her passing in a car crash on April 16.
Morgan, 24, was just weeks shy of graduating from Indiana State University, where she was studying African and African American Studies as well as Elementary Education.
Morgan was a neophyte at the Delta Sigma Theta Zeta Nu Chapter at ISU when Dajanay Monroe, Chapter President, met her and connected with her.
Monroe said her favorite memories of Morgan will be of her late friend and sorority sister being unapologetically herself – stopping her peers at midnight to “say good morning to Jesus” and always having a piece of scripture to accompany a conversation.
“I grew up in the church,” Monroe said. “So, she felt like home to me.”
Two of Morgan’s mentors on campus, Dr. Andrea Arrington-Sirois and Dr. Tiffany Reed, both said Morgan was a natural leader who empowered and uplifted those around her.
“Once you know her you are brought into her orbit and become part of her life,” Dr. Arrington-Sirois, who is a professor in ISU’s Department of History and African and African American Studies Program, said. “She is so good at making people feel like they belong around her and everyone wants to belong around her.”
Dr. Arrington-Sirois said Morgan was the best kind of student to have in the classroom because she exceled at connecting complex aspects of the curriculum together and bringing fresh insight to class discussions.
“She knew so much about everything,” Dr. Arrington-Sirois said. “She had the intellectual ability to really be a scholar.”
Dr. Reed, who is ISU’s Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Inclusion, said Morgan was her “mini-me” and was someone who really saw, and valued, others for who they were.
“I like to say I fell in love with her the first time I met her,” Dr. Reed said. “It takes a special type of woman to be bold and courageous not just in your appearance, but she truly takes up space and takes up space in a way where you just felt her energy and felt when she came into a room.”
Dr. Reed was a part of Morgan’s path to becoming a Delta Theta Sigma member, and said she wrote letters on Morgan’s behalf, something she didn’t just do for anyone.
“It was an honor to pin her,” Dr. Reed said. “To watch her become our member, to become our sister. She’s going to be truly missed; you have no idea. It’s a huge loss.”
Dr. Arrington-Sirois said one of the things she is mourning is Morgan’s potential.
“She did hope to go to grad school,” Dr. Arrington-Sirois said. “She would’ve been phenomenal in an elementary ed classroom, but she also would’ve been phenomenal in higher ed as a faculty member or a staff member.”
While they continue to mourn, Morgan’s loved ones are also determined to keep her legacy alive through a potential scholarship, a tribute on a study-abroad trip to Ghana this summer that Morgan took last year, and an overall appreciation for life and the relationships it brings us.
“She never left me without telling me she loved me,” Dr. Reed said. “So I challenge every student, every person, every human being that tomorrow is never promised, and that you love even more, you be kind even more, and be present even more.”
“Recently my brother just passed away; she was only person who made sure she texted me weekly,” Monroe said. “So, I just feel like I have to do that back to her family now because she did it for me.”
She wanted everyone to connect in real terms,” Dr. Arrington-Sirois said. “I think if we connect in real terms with people, that’s a huge memorial to her.”
Indiana State University is planning a celebration of life service for Zinyetta Morgan on Wednesday, April 24 at 5 p.m. at University Hall.
