Want to take in sweeping city vistas from cloud-brushing heights? For unparalleled 360-degree views over London, you can't beat the View from The Shard .

Obviously, we think London is one of the best and most beautiful cities in the world. But sometimes, you just can’t fully appreciate it from ground level – sometimes, you just have to get high. At the View from The Shard , you’ll be the highest visitors to London, towering a whopping 800ft (244m) above the ground , and enjoying some of the most panoramic views in town . Life looks pretty different from 72 storeys up. Read on to make the most of your visit to the View from The Shard , which has now reopened to the public.

View from The Shard overview

A relatively new addition to the London skyline, The Shard is nevertheless one of the most popular buildings in London. Opened in 2012, it stands 309 metres tall, boasts 95 storeys, and is the tallest structure in both the UK and Western Europe . Easily the biggest draw is the View from The Shard , the viewing platform and sky-high bar which has been welcoming visitors since 2013.

Your trip starts with the obligatory diversion through security, and then to interactive screens telling the history of London and The Shard, before you reach the lifts. A high-speed journey to the 68th floor includes graphics to make it seem as if you’re ascending through the roofs of London landmarks, including St Paul’s and the British Museum . Once up in the sky, you can check out the merch at The Sky Boutique (London’s highest shop), or ascend to Level 69, where you’ll find the main observation deck, including the only 360-degree view in London. Up here, you can admire the views, learn more by using one of the interactive telescopes, or simply prop up the in-house bar with a cocktail in hand.

For the highest possible views, head up to Level 72. The highest spot of The Shard that’s open to the public, this observation deck partially open air (and thus a tad windy), but quieter than the more commercialised lower levels. From your perch above the city, sights including Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, St Paul’s Cathedral , and Wembley Stadium can all be glimpsed. You can even watch over the city from the bathrooms, giving you panoramic vistas from the porcelain throne – luckily, there are automatic blinds you can shut if you fancy some privacy.

Things to see at the View from The Shard

In a word, everything. The name gives it away; you’re here for the views, and on clear days, you can see up to 40 miles away. Handily, there’s a good weather guarantee – if you can’t spot at least three of the London Eye, St Paul’s, the Walkie Talkie , Tower Bridge , and One Canada Square (that pointy Canary Wharf building) on your visit, they’ll let you return for free  within three months. Isn’t that nice of them?

Look north, and you’ll have the Tower of London, the Walkie Talkie, and the Gherkin in your eyeline. Eastwards, sights to spot include Canary Wharf, the O2, and Tower Bridge. To the south, the landmarks are a little more scarce, but you’ll catch sight of Battersea Power Station and the Oval cricket ground here. Over in the west, you’ve got the heavy hitters: the London Eye, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Hyde Park, and Buckingham Palace.

Much like a visit to the Eiffel Tower or Empire State Building, another thing you tend to see at the View from The Shard are proposals. Maybe it’s the gorgeous views, maybe it’s the lack of oxygen, but there’s no shortage of guys and gals popping the question up here. Thinking about proposing to your SO? The View from The Shard offers secluded 30-minute hires of the space exclusively for proposals, which is plenty of time to work up the courage, splutter out a speech, find the ring, cry some happy tears, and get in a few pictures and phone calls. Sorted.

When to visit the View from The Shard

There’s no bad time to head to the View from The Shard, really. If you go during the day, you’ll have the best chance of seeing all the London landmarks, and it tends to be a tad quieter than the sunset sessions. Having said that, watching the sun go down from the 72nd floor is a sight you don’t get very often, so if it takes your fancy, then go for it. Meanwhile, a nighttime visit offers the opportunity to see the twinkling lights of London spread before you. At Christmastime, the top twenty storeys are illuminated in a festive display , so December is also a popular month for an excursion.

If you’re looking to turn your visit into even more of a special occasion , why not attend one of their regular Moët & Chandon Champagne Parties ? You’re invited to don your glad rags, ascend to the heavens, and get increasing merry on a steady supply of champagne. Restaurants, pubs, and bars near the View from The Shard

You won’t have to go too far to find a drink at View from The Shard, given that there’s a champagne and cocktail bar on the 68th floor. They don’t exactly come cheap, however, as you won’t find a cocktail here for less than £12. If you’re willing to sacrifice a few floors for a more relaxed atmosphere, then Gong Bar  should suit you nicely (they also have a swimming pool, but you’ll need to be a hotel guest to use it).

If you should start to feel peckish, then there are a variety of restaurants in The Shard itself, with Hutong and Aqua Shard being particular standouts. Back on terra firma after your View from The Shard visit? There are a whole host of restaurants in London Bridge which should satisfy your appetite – amongst the most hyped are finger-lickin’ Casa do Frango , chocoholic Rabot 1745 , legendary pasta place Padella, and wonderful Spanish joint Pizarro .

When looking across the London skyline, it’s pretty hard to miss The Shard; (it is 306-metres high and the second tallest free-standing structure in the UK, after all). The Shard, (also known as “The Shard of Glass” or “The London Bridge Tower”), boasts 87 stories, 12 floors of residence, three restaurants, an open-air observation deck, and a viewing gallery. But for visitors and tourists, The Shard offers an amazing viewing experience of the London skyline that you won’t be able to find anywhere else in the city – or even the world.

The Shard was built to resemble “a shard of glass through the heart of historic London;” (hence the name) and was first constructed in 2009. The building contains facades of angled glass planes which reflect both the sunlight and the sky, and in doing so its appearance miraculously changes with the weather and seasons. The Shard was also built to maintain stability under “onerous” conditions thanks to its post-tensioned concrete floors, load-bearing pillars, and a tapering shape which allows it to sway to a maximum of 400 millimeters.

Because of its unique and ground-breaking design, The Shard won first place at the 2014 Emporis Skyscraper Awards, which recognizes buildings over 100 metres completed in the previous year. The judges of the competition decided to award The Shard with the winning prize because of its immediately recognizable construction and its representation as “London’s new emblem.”

The View From The Shard is located at level 69 (spanning three levels of decks up to level 72) and it allows visitors to view a spectacular 360-degree view of the London skyline. On a clear day visitors can easily see up to 40 miles (or 64 km) of London’s skyline, including St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, the Tower Bridge, London Bridge station and even the Houses of Parliament.

Visitors can also use The Shard’s digital telescopes (or “tell:scopes”) which have touch screens so you can zoom in on each tourist attraction, and read more on over 200 different tourist attractions in London. You can also view some pre-recorded time views of the city, so you can see what the tourist attractions look like during different times of the day or night.

At level 72, where the two separate panels of The Shard taper together, visitors can view the sky through the slanted glance and open-air tip, which provides a once-in-a-lifetime viewing experience.

On the ground-floor of The Shard, visitors can watch a screen play footage of London’s various attractions (like the Canary Wharf, London Eye and Mudchute Park and Farm), and view a panel illustrating some of the most recognizable faces of London (like The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Spice Girls, and many more).

Even taking the lift is a tourist activity in itself, thanks to a lightning speed which can take you up the higher levels of the building within seconds.

Be prepared to schedule at least 45 to 60 minutes if you want to visit The Shard’s viewing gallery, and you will also need to pass through an airport-style security scanner once you enter the building.

Hand-held electronic guides with headphones are available for all visitors, which give detailed information on the different landmarks you can see from the viewing platforms during your visit.

If you happen to visit The Shard on a rainy or foggy day, you will be issued a free ticket so you can return to The Shard within three months. If during your visit you miss out on seeing at least three major London landmarks (The London Eye, St. Paul’s Cathedral, The Gherkin, Tower Bridge or One Canada Square), you can speak to a member of staff at the ticket desk on the first level for your free return ticket.

Ticket prices and Opening Hours

Unfortunately the admission prices of The Shard are as steep as its height, but don’t let that deter you from visiting this fantastic tourist attraction in London.

You can save money by purchasing pre-booked tickets (which cost £24.95 for adults and £18.95 for children), and there are also a limited amount of “walk-up” tickets available each day (£29.95 for adults and £23.95 for children) if you don’t mind waiting for the next available session. Otherwise, you could pay as much £100 (per adult or per child) if you want to go up to The Shard’s viewing gallery immediately.

Children under the age of four can get into The Shard for free, however their tickets need to be booked beforehand through The Shard’s official website.

You can reach the Shard by bus or by car.

London Bridge Bus Station stop D (Buses: N21, N343) is only a few steps from the meeting point.

London Bridge Bus Station (Bus No: 43, 48, 141, 149, 521.) is only 2 minutes from the Shard.

It would be best if you get down at the bus station located at the main entrance of the London Bridge Station.

You can take the Northern or Jubilee lines to get to  London Bridge Underground Station , a quick walk from the Shard. 

Once you exit the London Bridge Underground station, you can’t miss the signs directing you to the Shard or Joiner Street.

Opt for Southern and South-Eastern trains if you plan to take the regular train to  London Bridge Station .

After exiting the London Bridge Station, turn left immediately and go down the escalator, which takes you to Joiner Street and eventually to The Shard.

If you’re traveling by car, turn on your Google Maps and get started.

There are enough parking garages around the attraction.

On Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, the Shard View opens at 11 am and closes at 7 pm.

On Fridays and Saturdays, the viewing platform stays open from 10 am to 10 pm.

The attraction remains closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

You need at least two and a half hours to enjoy stunning views of London from all three observatories at the Shard and try out the VR activities.

Visiting during non-peak hours allows you to bypass the 30 to 45 minutes of waiting time and complete the experience in just two hours.

Dining at one of the five restaurants at the Shard will require an additional hour in your schedule.

Tip: Since London Bridge and Tower Bridge are close to the Shard, some tourists add them as the next items on their itinerary.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the Shard is from 4 pm to 6 pm, when the viewing deck offers stunning visuals of the London skyline bathed in the setting sun’s colors.

Since most visitors prefer to reach just before the sun goes down and stay on till the lights come out, the Shard gets crowded during these hours.

It is best to visit between 10 am to 2 pm for a quiet time with family and kids.

We don’t recommend a night visit since many landmarks won’t be visible from the viewing deck after dark.

However, if you have already visited during the day, there is no harm in taking in the night view.

Avoiding the Shard over the weekends is better because it gets crowded.

However, if you must visit on the weekend, buy your tickets in advance and reach the observatory between 10 am and 2 pm because the crowd starts pouring in after that.

The Shard stays crowded till 7 pm, especially on Saturdays. The ticket prices are also higher during weekends.

The  London City Card  includes tickets to the Shard, the Tower of London, and a cruise on the River Thames for as long as you want. You also get a 10% discount code, which you can use (five times!) to get discounts on future purchases.

The Slide is the Shard’s virtual reality experience, where users can swoop and slide through the city’s skyline, traveling up to 160 kph (100 mph) past London’s important landmark. 

The adrenaline-fuelled 360-degree virtual reality experience is a multi-sensory journey hit with both kids and adults. 

The experience is almost as if you are sliding from the top of the Shard.

The Slide is not part of the regular ticket, and extra charges apply. 

Is The Shard better at day or night?

If you want to see a 360-degree view of London’s buildings and skyline and appreciate the beauty of the River Thames, visit The Shard during the day.

If you want to see the magical glitter of London’s lights and utter a dramatic ‘wow,’ visit the observation deck at night.

On a clear day, you can see the city up to 65 km (40 miles) in all directions.

In the daylight, the reflecting glass panels make the views of the city more dazzling.

However, there is always the possibility of poor weather in the early mornings, and it is best to check the weather conditions before your visit.

Note: The reflective glass panels in the sun might make it hard to take photos.

Viewing from the Shard during the night is a very different experience because of the lit-up skyline.

Structures like the Tower Bridge and the London Eye have lighting effects of their own, which visitors can see only at night.

Nevertheless, capturing the beauty of these iconic landmarks under the stars can be challenging without a quality camera.

The best time to visit the Shard is right before the sunset because you can enjoy the best parts of the day view, sunset, and darkened skyline once the night falls.

The tickets for the sunset hours, i.e., 4 pm-6 pm, sell out first, so  book the Shard tickets  right away.

The Shard vs. London Eye

Many tourists compare the Shard and the  London Eye  because they offer views from the two highest platforms in London.

At its highest point, the London Eye is 443 feet (135 meters) tall, and the observation deck of The Shard stands at a glorious height of 800 feet (244 meters).

The London Eye offers a view of around 40 Km (25 Miles), while Tthe Shard’s observation deck provides sights of up to 65 km (40 miles) in every direction.

However, one full rotation of the London Eye takes 30 minutes, and you have limited time to enjoy the view from the highest point – when your pod is at its most elevated position.

The Shard has no such time limit. You can stay for as long as you want and enjoy the London skyline.

Another significant difference between the two attractions is the waiting time.

A visit to London Eye involves a lot of waiting time because of the crowd it attracts, while the waiting time at the Shard doesn’t exceed 30 to 45 minutes.

The Shard’s tickets might be more expensive than London Eye’s, but it offers unlimited time at the top, and the waiting times are also much less.

We recommend you visit both, but if you have to choose only one vantage point to check out stunning views of London – The Shard certainly has the edge over the London Eye.

The much-talked-about View from the Shard, Europe's highest viewing platform, opens in London this February.

'Can you see France?' someone asked in the lift. The Shard is very high, but no, you cannot see France. France is more than 100 miles away. What you can see is all of London and beyond, 40 miles in every direction, all the way to hills and fields where sheep graze. Down at the foot of the Shard, hills and fields seem unthinkably far away; but up here, the silvery flats of Tottenham Marshes are tucked just behind the Barbican.

The Shard, Renzo Piano's steepled skyscraper, is the tallest building in Europe. It has 95 storeys and on the 72nd is The View at the Shard, a viewing platform and London's latest tourist attraction, opening 1 February 2013.

On the way up there's various experiential stuff, perhaps to keep the queues entertained. Videos show you what you could see from the top if you had bionic vision; the lift appears to break through the ceilings of iconic buildings as it speeds upwards - in the blink of an eye and without so much as an ear-pop - past the Shangri-La hotel opening later this year, past the apartments that will cost £30-50million each to buy.

But the real attraction is the view. There is so much to see that you could look for hours (and you can; there's no time limit); you keep spotting new things. Landmarks like the Gherkin and St Paul's Cathedral stand out among scores of vast, historic buildings you have never noticed before. There's a military boat on the Thames three blocks long. Tower Bridge looks like Lego. Trains slide by, unhurried. Digital telescopes, tagged with information for notable locations, let you zoom in and out, and can show you how the view would look on a crystal-clear day if it's not.

Higher still, on the 75th-floor open-air observation deck where the building's glass cladding ends in spikes in the sky overhead, you can hear as well as see the city. It doesn't feel precarious, or vertigo-inducing. Instead you feel kind of disconnected from the earth, like being in a hot-air balloon, watching the world unfold below you. The distant squeal of train brakes, the wind, and the rumble and rush of the city which sounds, from up here, like the roar of the ocean.

Things to do near the Shard

If you are planning a trip to The View from the Shard  or just visiting the London Bridge area and are wondering what there is to do, then look no further! This page will guide you through all the best attractions, activities and sights within walking distance of the Shard.

1. Hay’s Galleria

Formally a shipping dock for the Port of London, Hay’s Galleria was redeveloped in the 1980’s to create a beautiful indoor market, with shops, cafés and restaurants. A perfect atmosphere and river side pubs with excellent views of the Tower of London, this is a perfect area to chill out after a trip to the Shard.

Located on Tooley street, this is about a 5 minute walk from the Shard

2. HMS Belfast

Explore a real piece of British WW2 history on HMS Belfast, a floating museum brought to you by the Imperial War Museum. HMS Belfast is last ship of her type to serve in WW2 and allows you to imagine life at sea (and at war) for the sailors. Get up close with the giant guns and go deep inside the historic bowels of the ship.

The cost to visit HMS Belfast is only £12.80 (children go free!) and is located just a stone’s throw away from the Shard.

3. Tower Bridge

One if the defining London landmarks and the most famous bridge in the world, Tower Bridge is an absolute must see if you are looking for things to do near the Shard.

You now have the opportunity to explore Tower Bridge like never before with the Tower Bridge Experience . For £9 you can walk along the 45m high walkways and experience some stunning views, visit the Victorian engine rooms and discover the history of the bridge with a range of exhibitions.

4. Borough Market

Borough Market is a foodies dream; it’s one of the oldest and most respected markets in London with fine British and International produce from around the world. If you are looking something exotic to eat or want to sample to finest organic produce money can buy, Borough Market is the place to go.

With its unique atmosphere and alluring smells, you would be silly not to visit Borough Market if you happen to find yourself near the Shard, as it’s literally just down the road!

5. The London Bridge and Tombs Experience

Said to be one of the scariest attractions in the UK, the London Bridge and Tombs experience will take you through the 2000 year history of London Bridge where all the murders, warfare and death will be re-enacted before your eyes. You will then be taken down into the tombs, once a burial place for the dead, where the horrors will continue to unfold.

This will be an educational trip for anyone willing to visit; but the idea is to scare guests, so this isn’t one for the feint hearted.

6. More London

If you are just looking for somewhere to kick back and relax within a 5 minute walk of the Shard, then there is no better place than More London. Built a few years ago primarily as a business park, the area has become a hub of activity with restaurants, bars and fast food places opening in abundance.

There are plenty of benches and green areas to sit and make sure you bring the kids during summer months when water jets spray from the ground creating a great play area. You can also enjoy views of some of London’s most iconic landmarks such as Tower bridge, the Tower of London, The Gherkin, HMS Belfast and, of course, The Shard.

All these attractions are less than half a mile from The Shard, so be sure to check them out once you buy your Shard tickets and visit the UK’s tallest building!

How to Visit View From The Shard for Free

This post covers how much it costs to visit The View from The Shard inside the tallest building in the U.K., including tips on how to save money on tickets and how to get "free" entry.

As a local tour guide and resident of London who has visited the city’s observation decks, I relied on my first-hand knowledge to write this post.

CAN YOU GO UP THE SHARD FOR FREE?

Tickets are not free but there are ways you can avoid paying full price to enjoy the views.

By going to one of the bars and restaurants in the Shard, you won't have to pay for tickets. You will, of course, be paying for food and/or drinks.

On select dates, the London Days Out program offers a Buy One, Get One Free deal, making the second ticket free.

Also, when you purchase a London Pass, you receive free admission to The View from The Shard.

You must arrive at the time you choose, you can stay as long as you wish.

It is highly recommended to purchase tickets in advance to avoid missing out. You also get "skip-the-line" privileges.

Tourist Passes

Several tourist attraction passes offer reduced-price options to visit The View from the Shard.

You might want to consider purchasing a tourist pass if you plan on seeing more than one attraction in London.

You can save 50% or more on tickets to The View from The Shard by using either the Go City London Explorer Pass or the London Turbo Pass .

On select dates, you can get offers 2-for-1 tickets to over 150 top attractions, restaurants, theatres, exhibitions and more when you travel by train to London.

RESTAURANTS AT THE SHARD

If you'd rather enjoy the view while having a nice meal or a creative drink, there are five restaurants at the Shard to consider.

Of course, you'll be paying for food and/or drink, but entry to the Shard will be free. 

Aqua Shard - Located on the 31st floor, this restaurant provides a nice view of the city below and a three-story high atrium bar. Although tables must be reserved, no reservation is required to visit the bar.

Oblix - This restaurant on the 32nd floor offers different experiences depending on which side you visit. The west side offers a unique urban dining experience while the east side includes a lounge with DJs and live music. The east side of Oblix is also where you will find the bar which does not require reservations.

Hutong - You'll find this restaurant on the 33rd floor. Hutong serves authentic and creative takes on classic Chinese cuisine. You will be required to reserve a table for this location, but you can visit their Shanghai bar without making a reservation.

TĪNG - Found 128 metres above ground level, this restaurant and lounge offer British cuisine with an Asian twist. They also provide a theatrical approach to afternoon tea with an impressive selection of over 30 different types of tea.

GŎNG - Situated on the 52nd floor, this is the highest hotel bar in all of Western Europe. The Director's Cut drink menu includes a selection of special concoctions inspired by the greatest film directors of all time. Both reservations and walk-ins are welcome, but seating is subject to availability.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

This section covers things you may want to consider, such as the best time to visit and how long to linger (just below), security , and directions to the attraction.

Best Time to Visit

Several visitors indicate that any time is a good time to see the view from the Shard, but there are times when this attraction can get pretty crowded.

If you want to avoid the crowds, it will be important to consider when to make your trip. The first factor to review is their opening hours.

Hours (times change seasonally)

• Daily 10:00-22:00
• Sundays-Thursday 12:00- 20:00; Fridays-Saturdays 10:00-22:00
• Sundays-Thursday 11:00-19:00; Fridays-Saturdays 10:00-22:00
• Sundays-Thursday, 13:00 - 21:00; Fridays-Saturdays 10:00-22:00

Many guests try to visit The View from The ShardShard during sunset so that they can get a fantastic view of London as the lights begin to turn on below.

As a result, the hours of 4 pm - 6 pm can be a pretty busy time to visit, but it is also highly recommended for those who don’t mind the crowds.

Whether or not you choose to come during the sunset hours, make sure to find out when the sun sets before visiting.

As with most of the big attractions in this city, The View from The Shard is less crowded during the morning and evening hours.

Several reviewers, though, indicate that a trip at night isn’t the best option because it can be more difficult to see all of the landmarks after dark.

Considering this, we recommend planning your trip between 11 am - 2 pm for a quieter experience.

This location is very popular during weekends, so it will be important to consider a weekday trip instead if you can.

However, if you can only make it on the weekend, then we recommend avoiding the hours of 2 pm until 7 pm , particularly on Saturdays.

Tickets for this observation deck are timed, but you are welcome to stay as long as you wish. All visitors will be required to pass through a security check before heading to the top.

We recommend purchasing tickets for at least 30 minutes before the time that you want to enjoy the view.

Visitors recommend preparing to spend at least 1 hour at The View from The Shard, but you may want to set aside at least 2 hours if you plan to relax or eat at one of the many restaurants .

If you’re looking to get tickets, there are several tourist passes and combo tickets that can save you money off tickets to View from The Shard.

You can also save 20% simply by ordering your tickets ahead of time.

Security Information

As with the most popular attractions, some items are not allowed at The View from The Shard.

Confiscated items may not be returned after your visit, so try not to bring any of these things with you. In addition to obvious items such as weapons, the following objects are also prohibited:

You are welcome to bring the following items:

• Service Animals

Only food and drinks that are purchased at The View from The Shard are allowed to be consumed on the premises.

Although pushchairs are not allowed on the observation deck, there is an area to store them during your visit.

Wheelchairs are available on loan for disabled visitors who need them.

Alternatively, chairs may also be provided to guests with medical concerns. Guide dogs will be provided with a water bowl if requested.

No smoking of any kind is allowed inside the building.

Phones and other devices must be kept as quiet as possible to ensure that other visitors are not disturbed. 

NOTE: Guests are no longer required to wear a mask to enter the venue and they have been given the "Good to Go" badge by Visit England.

How to Get Here

The Shard is located in Southwark, on the southern bank of the Thames. The closest London Underground station is London Bridge (Jubilee and Northern lines).  

It’s also just across the London Bridge from Monument (Circle and District lines).  

We recommend using this link for directions to the Shard from anywhere in the London region.

TIP: If you plan on taking a bus tour, note that several hop-on-hop-off bus services make stops near London Bridge and the Shard.

This is a great way to save money on transportation to and from the building.

Due to its relatively central location, the Shard is located near several popular London attractions including:

• Monument to the Great Fire
• Shakespeare's Globe
• Tate Modern

WHAT TO EXPECT 

When you arrive at The View from The Shard, you will need to make your way to the booking hall on Level 1. 

This is where ticketing will take place and you will be required to pass through a security checkpoint.

Although there can sometimes be a line for this, most visitors report that it isn’t usually a problem.

Once you have entered and passed through security, you will then be asked to take a photograph. This photo is taken against a 'green screen' and the photographer encourages guests to look excited or to point off into the distance.

These photos are then superimposed on a London skyline background and are available to purchase as you leave.

After photos, visitors are then directed down a long hallway - featuring a map of London underfoot - to the first lift.

This lift takes visitors to the 33rd floor where they disembark and are directed to a second lift that takes them up to the 69th floor, and the first viewing deck called The View.

The top observation deck is approximately 244 metres (800 ft) high, nearly 90 metres (295 ft) making it the second tallest viewing deck in London (second only to Horizon 22 which is only 10 metres higher).

Unlike other observation decks, The View from The Shard provides a 360-degree view of London without any obstructions. On a clear day, one can see up to 40 miles away!

If you want to explore further, make your way up to the open-air Skydeck on Level 72. This is a spectacular space that is open to the elements.

Here you are surrounded by the top-most glass panes of The View from The Shard and can look directly up into the sky. The Skydeck is also covered in fake grass, giving it a garden feel.

If you visit during a less-buy time, you will find many guests lounging on the grass, enjoying the view, as well as a few drinks.

On both levels, visitors can purchase food and drink at the bar. Prices are high (a glass of wine is over £10), however, so budget accordingly!

Visitors looking for more can also take a private guided tour, enjoy a silent disco or take advantage of a virtual reality experience.

Professional photos are also available for those who want to commemorate their trip.

Once you decide to leave, you simply reverse the process to return to the ground floor. There's a gift shop near the entrance and exit if you would like to purchase a souvenir.

TIP: If you want to enjoy a drink with your view, consider visiting the Oblix bar on Level 32 instead.

You can ask for a seat near the window and enjoy the views from above while sipping on a cocktail. There is no admission price for this bar.

Enhance Your Experience

While you’re at The View from The Shard, you’ll have a few different opportunities to upgrade your ticket.

This is an excellent idea if you plan on doing more than just enjoying the view.

Champagne Experience  

Enjoy a glass of Moët & Chandon Imperial Brut Champagne as you take in the fantastic view. An excellent alternative is to get a drink of your choice at the Skydeck bar.

Day & Night Ticket  ( Not currently available )

Go to the View from the Shard during both day and night at a lower price than each would separately. These tickets must be used in one day and you must wait at least 2 hours between each visit.

Virtual Reality Experience  ( Not currently available )

The View from The Shard offers two VR experiences for visitors on the open-air deck. ‘Vertigo’ will let you test your balancing skills while ‘The Slide’ will have you moving at up to 100 mph.

Private Guided Tour  ( Not currently available )

Receive a special 45-minute tour of The View from The Shard and London below for between 2-6 visitors. This is a great way to discover the city from a different perspective.

WHY CHOOSE THE VIEW FROM THE SHARD?

There are several ways to get a good view of London, and many tourists are curious about whether or not a visit to The View from The Shard is worth the price of admission.

With that in mind, let’s discuss a few reasons why you might want to consider this observation deck.

We’ll also provide a few alternatives for visitors who aren’t entirely sold on the attraction.

Second Highest Observation Deck  

The View from the Shard is higher than any other observation deck in London, but for Horizon 22 which is only 10 metres higher.

The top observation deck is approximately 84 metres (275 ft) higher than the Sky Garden (which is free by the way).

If you’re looking to get the best view of London from above, The View from The Shard is your best option.

Additional Activities

In addition to both the closed deck and the open-air deck at The View from The Shard, you can also check out their VR Experience or take a private guided tour. Some of the alternative options for a view won’t have the same opportunities.

Dinner With a View  

Did you know you can see London from The View from The Shard without paying to visit the observation deck?

They have several restaurants and bars which offer a similar view. If you’re planning on a special dinner with your significant other, this is a great option.

Not The Only Option  

If you want to see the city from above for free or close to free, The View from The Shard isn’t your only option. You can also visit the Sky Garden for free.

Although it isn’t as high, you can also visit the Monument for only £5 per person. This location also has the advantage of being somewhat historic.
