The day was full of laughter, spectacular views and an opportunity to explore what the blue mountains had to offer. • cjsop 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Worth the money! Experience was 10/10. Very accommodating to all levels of activity. Our tour guide Amy was delightful and made us laugh many times. The sites were absolutely beautiful and the animal park was just what we were looking for on our first trip to Australia. We were kept informed on what the next step was going to be throughout the day. We have been on two other trips with other companies since then, and this one was by far the best! Pro Tips: 1. Just realize that breakfast is not right away. You will drive about 40 min before the breakfast stop. Totally worth it, but feed the kids before you leave the hotel. 2. Don’t use your kangaroo food on the first section. Save most of your food for the “back of the park” with the bigger kangaroos. Read more Written April 18, 2024

Three Sisters Blue Mountains

Three Sisters Blue Mountains | Dream Time Legend & the Scientific View

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

Three Sisters Blue Mountains are a magnificent eroded sandstone formation that attracts the hearts and minds of its visitors. Many different colours of the sandstone bring its changing characteristics to the view throughout the passing days and seasons. Three sisters also stand magnificently illuminated by floodlit up until 11 p.m. against the black background of the night sky. These beauties also played a major role in the past as a foundation of beliefs and stories of the Aboriginal people.

However, this spiritual place of the Aboriginal ancestors is a part of the Blue Mountains National Park today. Three Sisters Blue Mountains are at Echo Point Katoomba, just around 2.5 km south of the Great Western Highway. These sisters who stand over 3000 feet above sea level attract millions of visitors each year and joining a Blue Mountains day trip is everyone’s bucket list irrespective of local or overseas travelers. Queen Elizabeth lookout platform is the best selfie photography spot in Blue Mountains of our experiences .

Some many stories and legends describe the story of three sisters from many different points of view.

Aboriginal Dream time legends of Blue Mountains Three Sisters

Legend of the three sisters blue mountains – 1.

‘Meehni’, ‘Wimlah’ and ‘Gunnedoo’ were three sisters born in the Katoomba tribe. They lived in the peaceful Jamison Valley with the other members of their family. They grew into three beautiful young ladies as the days passed. As the story says, there were none to match their beauty ever walk the valley. So, it was not a surprise when the stories of their beauty travel far beyond the Jamison Valley.

Many in the Katoomba tribe tried to steal the hands of these maidens but none succeed in the effort. However, it was not only those in their own tribe who took upon the challenge. Unfortunately, the ones who could steal their hearts were three brothers from the Nepean tribe. It was unfortunate as the laws of the Katoomba tribe prohibited them marry anyone who is not from their own tribe.

Yet, the brothers charmed by the beauty of the lovely maidens refuse to accept the laws pointed by the elders. They were so detrimental to have the hands of their lovers that they were ready to do anything for them. So, tried to steal the sisters from the tribe and this started a war. The witch doctor of the Katoomba tribe was afraid of the safety of the girls. So, he took matters into his hand and made a plan to keep the girls safe while the war goes on.

Three Sisters Blue Mountains New South Wales Australia

He turned the sisters into stones and place them on the mountain as the Three Sisters Blue Mountains we know. The war ended but unfortunately, the witch doctor died in the war. People of the tribe tried to bring the sisters back to life but no one was powerful enough. Only the former which doctor has been as powerful as to reverse the spell. Now you know the first legend of this mystical lookout If you are leaving Sydney on a day trip to Blue Mountains .

Legend of the Three Sisters Blue Mountains – 2

Long ago, there was a Bunyip who lived in a deep hole near the area known as the Blue Mountains today. Everyone was afraid of it and passing the hole was considered very dangerous. There was also a witch doctor called Tyawan living in the same area. He had three daughters named Meenhi, Wimlah, and Gunnedoo.

Legend of the Three Sisters Blue Mountains

Tyawan had to pass the hole with the Bunyip whenever he went looking for food. He knew the danger of the area well so he was very careful when doing that. He even left his daughters safely on a cliff behind a rocky wall before starting his journey.

One day, Tyawan said goodbye to three sisters and went down the cliff stepping into the valley as usual. Meenhi who was on the cliff saw a large caterpillar and threw a stone at it. The stone missed the caterpillar crashing into the hole where the Bunyip sleeps. It woke up and ripped apart the wall in front of the girl. Seeing this, their father used his magic bone to turn them into stone. So, they became the Three sisters Blue Mountains New South Wales Australia we can even see today.

Annoyed by this, the Bunyip then turned to Tyawan. So, he changed into a Lyre Bird but dropped his magic bone while transforming. He waited till the Bunyip moves back into the hole and returned in search of his magic bone. But he could not find it. So, he couldn’t turn himself or his daughters back into their true forms. It is said that he still flies around the Three Sisters’ Blue Mountains looking for his magic bone.

Alternative view or the scientific view of the Three Sisters

The age of the three sisters.

The real story of the Three Sisters Blue Mountains is as wonderful as the fiction. The rocks below the mountains are dated over 470 million years old. But the age of the mountains themselves is around 250 million to 170 million years. So, they truly belong to the Triassic Period of the earth.

The entire Blue Mountains region was under a shallow sea in the past. So, large amounts of sediment of the seawater slowly sunk to the floor making horizontal layers. Then, these layers formed rock beds and shales. Later, these layers formed rock beds sandstones, and then volcanoes erupted and blasted through the coal, sandstone, and shale layers. They form ridges and sharp shapes which are then eroded by wind, rain, and mainly the rivers. This process formed them into the shapes we know today.

Exploring Three Sisters Blue Mountains Katoomba

Charles Darwin himself told the small river below the mountain could not have made the unusual valley. He guessed the sea must have made it through coastal erosion. However, he was wrong as the river is what cut the Grose Valley with enough time, rain, and wind.

No one explored the Three Sisters Blue Mountains New South Wales Australia or any of the Blue Mountain area truly until 1813. However, the area quickly became populated with miners with the discovery of coal beneath it. But this coal extraction ended as quickly as it began due to a banking crisis in 1895. A few short sections of single-rail tracks are all left from the mining history of the area. One could also find a railcar on display outside one of the former frontier towns. Many mysterious holes in the cliff faces are also a result of that forgotten history.

However, the three sisters’ Blue Mountains are much easier to visit today and there is much to do there . You can enjoy the wonder of the natural sights with many attractions surrounding them. You can even join adrenaline-inducing activities like mountain climbing or caving. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Why are you still waiting? Book Blue Mountains tours now to see the natural wonders.

The next stop on this private tour to the Blue Mountains and Jenolan caves is the Three Sisters in Katoomba .  Three Sisters Lookout at the Echo Point is the most visited lookout by travellers and it is a spectacular landmark. A   rock formation with many legends  behind it and on the north escarpment of the Jamison Valley.

The tour plans to visit  Jenolan caves  around 11 am leaving some time to see the magnificent views of the surroundings. And the probability of  spotting a Platypus at Blue Lake.

Spotting wildlife such as kangaroos and kookaburras are a common request on a  Jenolan Caves and Blue Mountains Tour . However, it depends on the time, Blue Mountains national park entry rules, and weather. Please let us ( Sydney Top Tours ) know before you book the tour and we advise the possibilities of spotting wildlife.

How far is the Jenolan caves from Sydney?

The Jenolan Caves are a natural wonder of Australia. These caverns are considered to be among the world’s oldest limestone caves. Jenolan caves are located 2.45 hours (174 km) from Sydney, in a rural valley in the southern Blue Mountains National Park. Jenolan Caves can easily be included in your Blue Mountains day tour. Because there is no public transportation from Sydney to Jenolan Caves, the best way to explore them is a Sydney-based guided day excursion.

What is the best cave to visit in Jenolan caves?

Without question, the Jenolan Caves as a whole is breathtaking, and picking just one or two caves to visit would be difficult. Nonetheless, it is a subjective choice as to which cave you consider the best. However, if you’re on a tight schedule and won’t be able to see all of the caverns, we recommend skipping  Lucas Cave , one of Jenolan’s most stunning caves. However, remember that getting to the cave inside would require a rigorous 1000-step stair climb.

Do I have to be physically fit to do a cave tour?

If you wish to go on a cave trip, you must be physically fit. Visitors to the Jenolan caves must climb a series of stairwells, crawl, and squeeze or even creep through ancient corridors. Hence, people with back pain, heart problems, or claustrophobia should avoid undertaking any cave tour. That being said,  Jenolan caves  provide a variety of excursions, including show tours, adventure tours, night tours, kids tours, and multilingual self-guided tours. As a result, before deciding on a tour, extensively research the options and the level of physical fitness required.

Can I see Platypus, rock wallabies and native birds at Jenolan caves?

Because Jenolan caves are located within a large nature reserve, you may expect to see a wide variety of fauna. The rock wallabies can be sighted near the big arch if you take the six-foot track path. Platypus appeared during the summer months at the Blue Lake, however, the area is closed at the moment due to conservations. The Jenolan caves cottage is the best-hidden spot to see wild kangaroos .

Are there any restaurants for lunch at Jenolan caves?

Yes, there are three places where you can dine. You can choose between  Chisolm’s Restaurant , Jeremiah’s Bar and Lounge, and Caves Cafe, depending on when and what you plan to eat.

JENOLAN CAVES AND BLUE MOUNTAINS PRIVATE TOUR REVIEWS

Flexible and friendly.

The guide was very easy to work with and highly flexible. Didn’t rush at any time and we had enjoyed all the attractions in blue mountain and Jenolan caves on our own phase. Definitely, recommend if you are willing to pay for a private tour.

Blue Mountains and Jenolan trip from Sydney

we had a great time with raki and would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a blue mountain and Jenolan cave private tour. Drive to the pulpit rock if you have spare time.

Get raki as your Sydney guide

My husband and I researched the web before we booked our Sydney tours and Sydney top tours came the first choice as they were very flexible with their booking t&c. raki, our guide on the has been doing tours for quite some time and is very knowledgeable.

Jenolan cave day tour

My partner and I experience with Sydney top tours was a wonderful and very informative day out traveling to and in the Blue Mountain and Jenolan cave not only that but it was one of the highlights of our stay in Sydney.

Jenolan caves private trip

We had an all-day excursion at the Blue Mountains and Jenolan caves from Sydney and loved each second of this private day tour. Our guide had very good knowledge and understand Jenolan caves. We stopped for a coffee in the morning and then heads to Katoomba to see Three Sisters. It was a brief stop to see the magnificent rock formation and learn about Aboriginal dream time stories. An hour and a half drive from the Blue Mountains, we reached Jenolan Caves. The marvel of cave formation. Due to time limits and fitness, we could do it on the river cave. It was stunning. On the way home, our guide took us to see wild kangaroos and enjoy some locally make fruit pies. Really worth every penny paid for this private day tour from Sydney.

Great memories

Our Jenolan caves private tour started with a pickup from Fourseasons hotel and a nice drive up to the Blue Mountains. The guide Raki was knowledgeable and personable. The magnificent views and hikes at Katoomba alone made for a great trip.  This was followed up with a visit to Jenolan caves. We were able to do the Temple of Baal cave with the time remaining on the day. The trip was finished with spotting some wild kangaroos near the Jenolan caves. In the end, it is a great day tour where you look back and are amazed at everything thing you have seen and done in a single day.

Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

three sisters blue mountains tour

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

three sisters blue mountains tour

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
