About Madhya Pradesh Tourism (MP)

Welcome to the heart of India, Madhya Pradesh, a state which exudes timelessness in every way. The exotic land is an intoxicating mixture of rich history, vibrant sights, awe inspiring art and shrines. From north to south, east to west, Madhya Pradesh is adorned with beautiful tourist attractions. On the state's rugged northern side, there are the famous temples of Khajuraho. Never before was sensuality and spirituality depicted as artistically as here. Two of India's most famous wildlife sanctuaries- Kanha and Bandhavgarh are embracing the state's area. Towards the southwest are the Buddhist stupas of Sanchi and 15th-century citadels of Mandu. Madhya Pradesh tourism offers you a wonderful mix of nature, heritage, wildlife and spirituality.

The state shares its borders with 6 states of India – Chhattisgarh towards south-east, south-west border touches "Maharashtra", western border touches "Gujarat", north-west border touches "Rajasthan", and north-east border touches "Uttar Pradesh".

Chandela emblem

However, being the second largest state of India, it is quite impossible to cover the entire Madhya Pradesh in one go. Generally, Madhya Pradesh has four broad sections – the western part consisting of Indore, Mandu, Ujjain, Omkareshwar, and Bhopal; the eastern part comprising Khajuraho, Panna, Orchha, and Chitrakoot; the northern part encompassing Gwalior, Shivpuri, and Chanderi; the southern part covering Jabalpur, Amarkantak, Bandhavgarh, Pench, and Kanha.

Chhatri of Rani Kamlapati

For this trip, we concentrated on the eastern and northern parts of Madhya Pradesh. We basically wanted to explore the archaeological sites and historical ruins found in these areas. It took us 6 full days to cover these parts. Here goes our 6-days itinerary for exploring Madhya Pradesh.

Day 1: Reaching Khajuraho and exploring the temples

A pleasant autumn morning welcomed us as we alighted from the train in Khajuraho . The Gita Jayanti Express, which we boarded from New Delhi the previous evening, reached Khajuraho 30 minutes before its scheduled time. Outside the station, it was bustling with passengers, who haggled with a handful of auto-rickshaws and shared trekkers.

We took an auto to cover the 6 km ride to the temple town of Khajuraho. As we drove through the bumpy road, Khajuraho reminded us of Hampi. Like Hampi, we could inhale the whiff of history even before we entered the main town of Khajuraho.

We checked in at Hotel Harmony, which is just a stone’s throw away from the Western Group of Temples. Earlier, we had decided to take a rest and a quick nap before exploring Khajuraho as we were dead tired after a helluva journey (that consisted of two overnight train journeys and air travel). However, once we had set our feet in Khajuraho, all our exhaustion vanished into thin air. We swiftly showered, got dressed, devoured dosas and pooris, and set out on our adventure.

A bit of Khajuraho’s history will be handy here. Khajuraho was the religious capital of the mighty Chandelas, who went on an extraordinary spree of constructing temples, seen never before or afterwards in the entire Indian subcontinent. The Chandelas built as many as 85 temples in Khajuraho, an unmatched feat that has immortalized the name of the Chandelas in the annals of Indian history. The temples in Khajuraho testify to the exceptional engineering skill of the Chandela architects. All in all, the Khajuraho temples manifest the zenith of India’s Nagara style of architecture. However, Khajuraho went into oblivion from the 11th century and its history was revived by the eminent archaeologist Alexander Cunningham in the 19th century.

Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, Madhya Pradesh

The massive temples are living specimens of the excellent skill of Chandela architects and sculptors and prove their mastery. The mere mention of Khajuraho evokes images of erotic sculptures of couples engaged in copulation. In fact, Khajuraho has become synonymous with erotic temple sculptures, which depict various forms of ‘mithuna’. Funnily enough, only 10% of Khajuraho’s temple carvings are erotic in nature. The enormous volume of carvings on the walls of Khajuraho temples belongs to Hindu deities, Dikpalas, demi-gods like Ganas and Gandharvas, Celestial Women such as Apsaras and Surasunadaris, amorous couples, animals, secular scenes like war and hunting, and geometric and floral designs.

Erotic sculptures of Khajuraho

The temples in Khajuraho are spread across a vast area. Hence, they are categorized into three sections: Western Group, Eastern Group, and Southern Group.

We started exploring Khajuraho with the Western Group of Temples. The temples in this area are the most well-preserved and perhaps the most beautiful ones in Khajuraho.

Lakshmana Temple

One by one, we visited the Lakshmana Temple (dedicated to Vaikuntha Vishnu), Devi Shrine (a statue of Brahmani sits inside), Varaha Mandapa, Kandariya Mahadeva Temple (devoted to Lord Shiva), Mahadeva Shrine, Devi Jagadambi Temple (houses an idol of Devi Parvati), Chitragupta Temple (consecrated to Surya, the Sun God), Vishwanatha Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva), and Chausath Yogini Temple.

Devi Jagadambi Temple

Exploring the Western Group of Temples took the entire morning. It was time for lunch when we finished. Following lunch, we visited the new ASI museum near Hotel Lalit. The museum is vast and has well-stacked galleries.

Next, we went to the two temples of Southern Group. These temples are situated a bit away from the main town. Both the Duladeva Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva) and Chaturbhuja Temple (accommodating an admirable Vishnu statue in ‘tribhanga’ position) were extraordinarily beautiful.

Duladeva Temple

Day 2: Visiting Eastern Group of Temples and Raneh Waterfalls:

We started our second day with a lip-smacking breakfast at Raja Café. Later, we visited the Eastern Group of Temples. This cluster of temples is located around the Khajura Sagar, also known as the Ninora Tal. The main temples of this group are Vamana Temple (dedicated to Vishnu’s 5 th incarnation), Javari Temple (devoted to a four-armed Vishnu), Brahma Temple (houses a Shiva linga with four faces), and Ghantai Temple (ruins of a Jain temple).

Vamana Temple

Afterwards, we explored the Jain temples of Khajuraho such as the Parshvanatha Temple, Adinatha Temple, and Shantinatha Temple. With this, we finished our temple trail in Khajuraho.

Parshwanatha Temple

Post-lunch, we decided to visit the Raneh Waterfalls. It lies some 20 km away from Khajuraho and can be reached within 30 minutes.

Raneh is a natural waterfall on the Ken River. The river’s erosional activity has led to the formation of 98 feet deep canyon made up of granite in varying shades of colours ranging from pink and red to black and grey.

Raneh Waterfalls

We finished exploring Khajuraho with the Light and Sound Program held at the Western Group.

Day 3: A quick stop at Dhubela on the way to Orchha:

On our third day, we bade Khajuraho adieu and headed towards Orchha. En route, we halted at Dhubela . At present, Dhubela is an otherwise run-of-the-mill village, characterized by lush greenery. But, in the past, it served as the centre of Maharaja Chhatrasal’s Bundelkhand kingdom. Dhubela has also become synonymous with Chhatrasal’s legendary daughter, Mastani. Mastani, who was later married to Peshwa Baji Rao I, spent a good part of her life in Dhubela and so, Dhubela is often referred to as the land of Mastani.

Dhubela Museum

Dhubela still bears the testimony of a once-prosperous kingdom. The village is dotted with various architectural specimens built by Chhatrasal, who is famously called the ‘Lion of Bundelkhand’. We visited the following places in Dhubela:

1. Maharaja Chhatrasal Museum – it once served as the palace of Chhatrasal and is now converted into a fascinating museum showcasing Gupta and post-Gupta era artefacts excavated from various parts of Bundelkhand.

2. Mastani Mahal -a palace built by Chhatrasal for his beloved daughter Mastani.

Mastani Mahal

3. Hriday Shah Palace – a dilapidated palace built by Chhatrasal’s eldest son, Hriday Shah.

4. Chhatri of Maharani Kamlapati – the cenotaph of Chhatrasal’s first wife Kamlapati which stands on the bank of the Dhubela Lake and is decorated with around 140 Bundeli-style of paintings.

5. Chhatri of Maharaja Chhatrasal – the cenotaph of the valiant ruler built by Peshwa Baji Rao I.

6. Chhatri of Chhatrasal’s Horse – the cenotaph of Chhatrasal’s faithful horse, Bhale Bhai.

7. Sheetal Garhi – a 17 th -century fortress built by Keerat Singh, the grandson of Chhatrasal.

8. Mahoba Gate – a spectacular gate built by Chhatrasal.

After our brief yet memorable sojourn in Dhubela, we drove straight ahead and reached Orchha in the afternoon.

We quickly checked in the hotel and head out to catch the sunset at Betwa River with the Chhatris on the backdrop. Alas! No sooner had we reached the riverside than the rain started. Our plan of enjoying the sunset sadly went down the drain.

Day 4: Exploring the erstwhile Bundeli capital of Orchha:

The next morning, thankfully the weather turned sunny and perfect for exploring the historic town of Orchha . Before embarking on the journey, let’s learn one or two bits about Orchha’s history. Orchha was made the capital of the Bundeli kingdom by Raja Rudra Pratap Singh in 1531 CE. It remained the capital of the entire Bundelkhand from 1531 to 1783 CE.  Rugged hills, dense forest and the Betwa or Vetravati River surrounded Orchha thus securing it and hiding it from the onslaught of the Mughal forces. In fact, the word ‘Orchha’ aptly means hidden. The town remained hidden from the Mughals and continues to remain elusive to tourists and explorers even today.

Outline of Orchha

We kicked off our adventure in Orchha with its eponymous fort. The imposing Orchha Fort is an amalgamation of massive and magnificently built palaces. It took us over 4 hours to explore the entire Orchha Fort complex.  Also, we opted for the audio tour guide of Madhya Pradesh tourism. It was cheap (INR 25 per pre-recorded audio guide along with headphones), incredibly informative and convenient, and also gave us the freedom to explore the sites as per our choice.

Gradually, we took a tour of various sections of the Fort:

1. Diwani-e-Aam – a court where the King used to hold assemblies with his council of ministers.

2. Raja Mahal – it was built by Raja Madhukar Shah and characterized by a fusion of Mughal and Rajput styles of architecture as well as lavish Bundeli style of paintings.

Parts of Orchha Fort

3. Jahangir Mahal – it was constructed by Raja Bir Singh Deo Bundela for Mughal Emperor Jahangir and set apart by 8 domes and 236 chambers, intricately carved doors with elaborate arches and interiors decorated with trellis work, lapis lazuli inlays, and glazed blue tiles.

Majestic Fort

4. Sheesh Mahal – it was built as a pleasure retreat and is now converted into a heritage hotel by Madhya Pradesh Tourism.

Sheesh mahal

5. Rai Parveen Mahal – it was the home of the beautiful courtesan, Rai Parveen.

After travelling the nooks and crannies of the Orchha Fort for 4 hours, we took a quick rest and a brief lunch at the restaurant of the Sheesh Mahal. Recharging ourselves, we set out to explore the rest of Orchha.

Our next destination was the iconic Chhatris of Orchha. The Chhatris are cenotaphs of Bundela rulers of Orchha, earmarking the ground where the Kings were cremated.

There are 14 Chhatris, built between the 16th and 18th centuries. Apart from Bir Singh Deo’s Chhatri which resembles a palace, the cenotaphs follow the Nagara style of temple architecture. They are modelled on ‘panchayatana’ style with ‘garbhagriha’ inside and ‘shikharas’ at the top.

Chhatris of Orchha

Next, we climbed a small hillock to reach the breathtaking Laxmi Narayan Temple. It was built by Raja Bir Singh Deo Bundela. The temple is a unique structure as it resulted from the mingling of architectural styles of both temple and fort.

Lakshmi Narayan Temple

The most intriguing feature of this temple is the presence of vivid murals on its interior walls and ceilings. The lively, colourful paintings are the finest specimens of Bundeli style of painting, which resulted from a marriage of Rajput and Mughal styles.

Wall paintings

Afterwards, we reached the sky-kissing Chaturbhuj Temple. It was here that the idol of Ram Chandra was originally supposed to be placed. The 105-metre-high temple now houses a statue of Shree Krishna and Shree Radhika, worshipped daily at regular intervals.

The exterior of this massive temple is ornately decorated with floral motifs and religious emblems. In stark contrast, the interior is plain and austere.

Our last stop at Orchha was the Ram Raja Temple. It is the only temple in India where Ram Chandra is worshipped as King. The evening arati at Ram Raja Temple is a spectacle to behold.

Ram Raja Temple

After finishing the tour of Orchha, we drove to Jhansi. From Jhansi, we boarded the train and reached Gwalior in the evening.

Day 5: Waking up in a cloudy Gwalior and exploring Morena:

We woke up to peacocks’ call on our fifth morning. We were staying at Neemrana’s Deobagh in Gwalior, and the peacocks’ divine call served as our alarm clocks. Instead of rushing out to explore Gwalior, we took it slow and enjoyed a relaxing morning on the well-curated lawn of Deobagh with the peacocks and squirrels as our companions.

After a comforting breakfast, we decided to explore the archaeological ruins of the three sites in Morena – Bateshwar, Garhi Padavali, and Mitaoli. With a cloudy sky and a light drizzle, we set out for Morena.

Our first stop for the day was the intriguing Bateshwar Group of Temples . The temple complex, situated amidst the once infamous Chambal ravines, was previously a jumble of countless ruined structures. Gradually, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) went to unprecedented lengths and restored many of the shrines here. At present, Bateshwar has around 200 temples. In fact, ASI is still engaged in restoration works in Bateshwar.

Bateshwar Group of Temples

The name Bateshwar is probably derived from Bhooteshwar, another name of Lord Shiva. According to experts, the Bateshwar Group of Temples belongs to the Gurjara – Pratihara era. The shrines of Bateshwar were built between 750 – 800 CE. Eventually, the temples were reduced to mere rubbles. It is however unclear as to how these shrines were destroyed. No sign of invasion or attack was found here. Presently, the common consensus is that an earthquake in the 13th century led to the decay of Bateshwar. Gradually, the debris was engulfed by the forest and Bateshwar remained hidden from the prying eyes.

Omgoing restoration work

As we walked, the riveting archaeological site began to unfold before us. Present-day Bateshwar can best be described as rows of small temples arranged in neat order amidst the scattered ruins. The entire site is filled with broken pillars, wrecked friezes, and fragmented sculptures. A Hanuman statue, smeared with orange vermillion, stands at the centre and is still worshipped by the locals. Needless to say, we were overwhelmed by the plenitude of artefacts in Bateshwar.

Hanuman statue at Bateshwar

After Bateshwar, we visited the Garhi Padavali where stands an insanely carved ‘mukha mandapa’ of a temple, the main portion of which is now lost in oblivion. It is undoubtedly one of the most intricately carved temples in India. There is hardly an inch left without elaborate sculptures. Every pillar and ceiling is decorated with ornate carvings.

Garhi Padavali

We were stunned by the exquisite wall panels showcasing the Trimurti, the birth of Shri Krishna, Goddess Chamunda, the Sun God Surya, and the slaying of Abhimanyu in the battle of Kurukshetra.

Ceiling panel

Our last stop in Morena was the Chausath Yogini Temple of Mitaoli . At present, it goes by the name of Ekattarso Mahadeva Temple. The temple is circular and roofless, as tantric rituals involved worshipping the environment along with its five principal elements, also due to the belief that the yoginis could fly. Due to its hypaethral structure, it is also believed that this temple was built for the study of astrology, astronomy, and mathematics by observing the transition of the sun.

The amazing sculpture of the temple

The temple is circular, with a radius of around 52 m. The outer round-shaped wall has 64 small chambers with an open ‘mandapa’ supported by pilasters and pillars. These chambers once accommodated the representation of the ‘yoginis’. At present, they contain small Shiva lingas. At the centre, there stands another circular temple, which houses the Ekattarso Mahadeva linga.

Inside the temple of Mitaoli

As we strolled around the temple and peeked inside the minuscule chambers, we sensed the strong presence of a spiritual aura. This may be due to the fact that this Chausath Yogini temple was one of the foremost places in ancient India for practising Tantric rituals.

Mitaoli Temple

After exploring Morena, we decided to go on a food trail in the streets of Gwalior. We relished the renowned Boondi Laddoo of Bahadura Sweets, Gajaak from the well-known Daulat Ram Gajaak Bhandar, Paneer Jalebi and Kachori at Jodhpur Mishtaan Bhandar, and Gilori Petha at the iconic Panchiraaj.

Day 6: A date with the eponymous Fort of Gwalior:

On our last day in Madhya Pradesh, we visited the resplendent Gwalior Fort . The Fort, set atop a solitary rocky outcrop of the Vindhyas and spread across a staggering 3 square kilometres and rising 36 feet, is a wonder in itself.

The Gwalior Fort

The fort is comprised of various monuments that date back as early as the 7th century CE. It took us almost 5 hours to complete exploring this enormous Fort.

1. Sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras – the rock-cut sculptures found in the Gopachal and Siddhanchal Hills.

Jaina statues at Gwalior Fort

2 . Man Singh Palace – the grandest and most stunning section of the Gwalior Fort characterized by six colossal cylindrical towers capped with cupolas, corbelled brackets, elaborate lattice-work, chhattris, and vibrant mosaic tiles.

Inside the Man Singh Palace

3. ASI Museum – it is situated inside a building which dates back to the British era.

4. Kirti Mandi – the handiwork of Raja Kirti Singh Tomar with faint traces of painting and coloured tiles.

5. Vikramaditya Palace – it was built in 1516 CE and named after Raja Vikramaditya, son of Raja Man Singh.

6. Jahangir Mahal & Shahjahan Mahal – it was used as a resting place for Mughal troops rather than for royalty.

7. Teli Ka Mandir, one of the loftiest buildings within the premises of the Gwalior Fort and set apart by its hybrid architecture of Dravida and Nagara styles.

Teli Ka Mandir

8. Saas-Bahu Temple – these twin temples were built by the Kacchapaghata ruler, Mahipala, in 1093 CE and originally called Sahasra Bahu Temple as it was dedicated to a thousand-armed form of Lord Vishnu.

22 10 07 MP22 1401

9. Chaturbhuj Temple – it houses an inscription that contains one of the earliest known uses of mathematical zero.

10. Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhor – it was constructed to commemorate Guru Hargobind Singh’s incarceration inside the Gwalior Fort by Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

11. Gurjari Mahal – a charming palace built by Raja Man Singh for his Gujjar queen, Mariganayani.

Post-lunch, we went to the Jai Vilas Palace. This opulent palace is the residence of the Scindias, the erstwhile rulers of Gwalior. Originally, this lavish palace was constructed to welcome the then Prince of Wales. It was designed by Lt. Col. Sir Michael Filose and displays a fusion of both Tuscan and Corinthian architectural styles. Although it is still used by the Scindias as their residence, a part of it with 35 rooms has been converted into Jiyaji Rao Scindia Museum.

Jai Vilas Palace

During sunset, we paid a visit to the tomb of Muhammad Ghaus, who was a 16th-century Sufi saint and also a prolific music master. Mian Tansen was one of his foremost disciples.

Mohammad Ghaus’s tomb was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Akbar and depicts a synthesis of the Lodhi style of architecture and structural ornamentation peculiar to Gujarat. The mausoleum is a marvellous specimen of delicate craftsmanship. Built with sandstone, it is decorated with lattice or ‘jali’ works on all sides.

Tomb of Hauj Khas

In the same compound lies the final resting place of Sangeet Samrat Tansen. Compared to his master’s resting place, Tansen’s tomb is modest.

With Tansen’s Tomb, our Gwalior tour came to an end.

Khajuraho is often said to be the most popular historical site in Madhya Pradesh tourism. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Khajuraho is home to groups of architecturally brilliant temples and a delight for history lovers and photographers. The temples are famous across the globe as examples of art and architecture and are visited by thousands of travellers. If you are planning to include a trip to Khajuraho in your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary, ensure that you keep aside at least two to three days.

The temples were built between 950 and 1050 AD by the rulers of the Chandela dynasty. Depicting most facets of life including spiritual teachings, erotic art, kinship and spiritual pursuit, the temples are designed with the Nagara style of architecture and promise a mesmerising experience. The geographical location of the temples puts them in three different groups – eastern, western and southern. It’s best to explore the temple complexes with the help of a guide since that will give you more information on the history of the temples and the architecture. The western group of temples sees more visitors owing to the presence of the largest temple in the complex – Kandariya Mahadeo Temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the largest and tallest temple dates back to 1050 BC. It was built by Raja Dhandadeva. The most striking feature of the temple is the shikhara or spire that represents Mount Kailash. The temple has 646 statues along the boundary and the view of the temple from a distance is quite breathtaking. You will need at least an hour to explore the temple so ensure that you aren’t hurrying through your trip. Other temples that should be part of your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary are Dulhadev Temple, Lakshman Temple, Parsvanath Temple and Javari Temple.

There are numerous hotels, hostels and guesthouses in Khajuraho that offer a luxurious experience. In fact, the heartwarming hospitality of locals in the city is one of the biggest attractions for travellers exploring Madhya Pradesh tourism. You can find a few of the best ones mentioned below in this Madhya Pradesh travel guide .

Sanchi is among the top destinations for travellers who want to explore Madhya Pradesh tourism and features in all Madhya Pradesh travel guides. Home to the Great Stupa that is one of the oldest Buddhist monuments in the country, Sanchi is a delight to explore if you are interested in history and architecture. The UNESCO World Heritage Site was built by Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. Besides the Great Stupa, Sanchi should be on your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary owing to numerous monasteries and other significant remains from the bygone era.

Sanchi Stupa is among the most-visited historical sites of  Madhya Pradesh tourism. The hemispherical dome of the stupa is 54 feet high and has an inner chamber. Visitors are not allowed to enter the stupa but you can pay your respects by walking in a clockwise direction around the structure. Buddhists from around the world visit this mesmerising structure. There are four gateways that face different directions and support striking carvings on the walls. The carvings depict the life of the Buddha, his incarnations and various significant life events.

It will take you around an hour to explore the stupa and we highly recommend exploring this world-famous site with the help of a guide. The best time to plan your trip to Sanchi is between November and March when the weather is comfortable for sightseeing. Sanchi is situated close to Bhopal so you can plan a short day trip or choose to stay for a couple of days depending on your interests.

Besides the Great Stupa, we recommend saving sufficient time for the Sanchi Museum, The Great Bowl, Ashoka Pillar and Udaygiri Caves.

Until recently Orchha was a hidden gem in Madhya Pradesh tourism and most Madhya Pradesh travel guides missed mentioning this beautiful place. The historical town is situated on the banks of the Betwa River and offers history lovers, photographers and artists an experience of a lifetime. Fondly referred to as the ‘City of Palaces’, Orchha takes you away from the hustle and bustle of cities into a world of art and beauty.

Orchha wasn’t always an obscure town. In fact, it was the erstwhile capital for the Bundelas dynasty – traces of which are still visible in the grand monuments spread across town. Orchha aptly translates to ‘a hidden place’ and you’ll know how well the name suits the town when you visit. You can expect a busy itinerary in Orchha when you are exploring Madhya Pradesh tourism so ensure that you stay here for at least two to three days.

Jehangir Mahal is a popular tourist attraction in Orchha. It was built as a garrison for the Mughals so they could establish greater control over the region. With typical Mughal architecture, the palace is a delight to explore. We recommend booking guided tours for all historical sites in Orchha as this is the only way to explore this beautiful town. The stories, legends and historical tales surrounding the many sites in Orchha are best told by locals.

You must also add rafting to your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary when exploring Orchha. Rafting in the Betwa River will give you the opportunity to tackle Grade 1 and Grade 2 rapids and will also offer you beautiful views of the Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary. Rafting will take three to four hours so make sure that you begin your tour in the morning. It’s also recommended to book your rafting tour in advance or else you might have to wait an extra day.

Wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers must also make time for the Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary. Situated around the Betwa River, this beautiful sanctuary should be a part of your itinerary when exploring Madhya Pradesh tourism. Besides an enthralling safari, you can enjoy camping, canoeing and trekking here. As is with all places in Orchha, we recommend booking a guided tour for your visit to the sanctuary.

Enveloped in serenity and history, Ujjain is among the holiest cities in India. Every 12 years, the city comes alive as thousands of pilgrims come together for the Kumbh Mela. Situated along the Shipra River, Ujjain is home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and sees a steady stream of visitors throughout the year.

If you plan to add Ujjain to your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary, we suggest keeping aside two days. Ujjain is known as the ‘City of Temples’ so expect your itinerary to be dominated by temple tours. You must visit popular temples including Mahakaleshwar Temple, Harsiddhi Temple, Sri Radha Madan Mohan Temple and Chaubis Khamba Temple. The Shipra aarti that takes place at Ram Ghat is another unmissable activity in Ujjain as is a boating tour in the evening. The views of the sunset whilst boating in the river are awe-inspiring. There are many hotels, ashrams and guesthouses in Ujjain and depending on your budget, you can choose one for your stay.

History, grandeur and art come together to offer you a memorable vacation in Gwalior. A gem that is part of Madhya Pradesh tourism, Gwalior is among the most visited cities in the state. And rightly so. Gwalior Fort is the most significant historical site here with Jai Vilas Palace claiming the second spot. Gwalior also promises adventure and nature in equal measure. It’s best to hire a travel guide for the entire duration of your trip to Gwalior while exploring Madhya Pradesh tourism.

Gwalior Fort is often referred to as one of the most beautiful forts in India. Perched on a craggy mountain, the fort should be on the top of your list while exploring Madhya Pradesh tourism. The fort includes temples, gardens and numerous smaller monuments inside and we suggest keeping aside three to four hours to explore the fort. The most striking part of the fort is Man Mandir Palace – also the site of the charming light and sound show that takes place every day. Man Mandir was built using blue ceramic tiles and is a gorgeous site till date. Teli-ka-Mandir is another sought-after attraction in the fort. Built in the 9th century, the Dravidian-style temple is a blend of South Indian and North Indian architectural sensibilities and you must pay a visit when exploring the fort.

Your visit to Gwalior will be incomplete without visiting Jai Vilas Palace. Built by the Maharaja of Gwalior, Jayaji Rao Scindia, it serves as the residence of the Maratha Scindia family as well as a museum that takes you back to the bygone era. With 35 rooms that have been converted to a museum, you can expect an informative and learning tour. Chitrangada Raje Art Gallery shouldn’t be missed when exploring the palace and neither should the Durbar Hall. Home to a hand-crafted carpet and intricately made chandeliers, the grand hall is larger than life and transports visitors back in time.

A few places in Gwalior that you can consider for your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary from this Madhya Pradesh travel guide are Gujari Mahal Archaeological Museum, Tomb of Tansen, Saas Bahu Temple and Surya Mandir.

Activities And Things To Do In Madhya Pradesh

Visit national parks

Madhya Pradesh tourism is a treasure for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. If you are one of those people who can’t imagine a trip without an exciting jungle safari, then Madhya Pradesh is the perfect holiday destination for you. There are numerous national parks in the state and each is an important part of Madhya Pradesh tourism.

Bandhavgarh National Park is arguably the most popular national park of Madhya Pradesh tourism and a visit to the state is incomplete without reserving at least two days here. Bandhavgarh has the highest population of Royal Bengal tigers in the world which implies that you have a good chance of spotting a tiger. Besides the Bengal tiger, wildlife enthusiasts can hope to catch a glimpse of nilgais, wild boars, leopards, jungle cats, Asiatic jackals and striped hyenas. The jeep safaris in Bandhavgarh are extremely popular and it is suggested that you book your tour well in advance. If you wish to embark on an elephant safari, you must book your spot the moment you arrive because the safaris are in high demand. During the safari, you'll be accompanied by a naturalist and a tour guide. Elephant safaris take place only in the morning whereas jeep safaris are available in two shifts.

Panna National Park, Satpura National Park and Kanha National Park are other tiger reserves that should be a part of your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary. However, it’s important to plan your trip keeping in mind the monsoon season in Madhya Pradesh.

Go boating in Bhedaghat

What can be better than a boating tour amidst surreal natural beauty in a small serene town? Not too many things, we think. Bhedaghat is often referred to as the ‘Grand Canyon of India’ and a boating experience here is a delight. A boating session can take between 45 minutes and an hour but you can extend this time period if you inform the tour guide beforehand. What makes a trip to Bhedaghat better is the gorgeous Dhuandhar Falls. The falls cascade from a height of 98 feet and the sight will surely take your breath away. This is also one of the biggest reasons that boating in the moonlight is a preferred activity among tourists who are exploring Madhya Pradesh tourism. Boating is allowed only till 7:00 pm so ensure that you plan your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary accordingly.

The best time to plan your visit to this beautiful town according to this Madhya Pradesh  travel guide is between November and May. Summers here are not harsh and you can enjoy relaxed sightseeing trips till May-end. However, monsoon isn’t a great time to plan your Madhya Pradesh tourism itinerary if Bhedaghat is on your list. The area receives heavy rainfall and boating is closed during these months.

Detailed Itinerary and other tips

Reach Gwalior. Explore Gwalior Fort

This is the day you reach Gwalior. If  you reach early, then check into the hotel, freshen up and get ready to explore Gwalior Fort. As we had an afternoon flight from Bangalore, we reached late and spent the evening in the resort. If that is the case with you, you need to add another day to the itinerary. Rest on the day of arrival at your hotel and visit Gwalior Fort the next morning.

Now coming to the Fort, it is sprawled on top of a hill and needs at least half a day to cover. Majority of Gwalior attractions you may find over the internet are actually part of the fort itself. Since it could get tiring exploring this huge fort, we recommend not keeping any other attractions in the list for this day.

Here is a list of all the key points you can visit inside Gwalior Fort.

Maan Singh Mahal

The most  striking part of the fort is this almond coloured palace with dashing blue paintings all over. The interiors are as pretty with exquisite courtyards and corridors made of ornate walls and pillars. Enjoy the light and sound show that happens every evening at the amphitheatre near this Mahal and get to know the glorious history of Gwalior.

Other Mahals in the premises (Karan Mahal, Vikram Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, Shahjahan mahal etc.)

Close to the Maan Singh Mahal, there are many other mahals built inside Gwalior Fort. These mahals have a very different charm with their rustic look and are named after the rulers who built them. You can cover all of  these mahals in an hour or so.

Saas Bahu Temple

The name of the temple was interesting enough to pique our interest. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple was originally named Sahastrabahu, signifying Lord Vishnu in his 1000 arms form. But with time, the name was finally altered as Saas Bahu, meaning mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. The temple has a grand architecture and is full of intricate carvings that take you back in time. There is also a smaller temple in the compound that is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is equally beautiful.

Teli Ka Mandir

A towering 9th century temple with impressive carvings, Teli Ka Mandir has a very unique architectural design. There is nothing to see inside and also the interior has a very strong smell of bats. But the exterior of this 100 feet tall temple is definitely a visual delight.

Gurudwara data Bandi Chhor

A striking white Gurudwara made in the memory of the Sikh Guru who freed 52 Rajput kings from the custody of Mughla King Jahangir with his wit. Suitable for a quick visit if peaceful holy places interest you.

Rock cut Jain Sculptures at Gopachal Parvat

As you move up the hill towards the the fort, you will come across these skilfully chiselled Jain statues on both sides of the road. These rock-cut sculptures are believed to be carved during 7th century and though broken in parts are still a great sight.

Know before you go

  • As I mentioned earlier, the Fort is atop a hill. If you are going by a 4 wheeler, then you can directly go till the fort gate. But if you are taking an auto (tuk-tuk), then it will drop you at the entry point at the base of the hill. You can either walk or take a van to reach the fort.
  • From the auto drop point, it is around 1 kilometre to reach the gate of the Fort that houses all the Mahals including the Maan Singh Mahal. Then Saas Bahu Temple, Gurudwara and Teli ka Mandir are farther away from this gate and also away from each other. Unless you have a vehicle at your disposal, we recommend hiring a van from the auto drop point that would take you to all these locations one after the other. They give enough time to visit the points and charge a very reasonable amount of INR 550.
  • Entry tickets are applicable for the palaces as well as Saas Bahu Temple and Teli Ka Mandir. The ticket taken for Maan Singh Palace also includes entry to these 2 temples. So keep it handy even after the palace visit.
  • You need to take a different entry ticket for the other palaces (all included) inside the fort apart from Maan Singh Mahal.
  • Avoid the queue at the ticket counter and purchase the entry tickets for the fort online from  https://asi.payumoney.com/quick/gwf
  • Timing for light and sound show:
  • Summer (March – Oct) – Hindi: 7:30-8:15 PM, English: 8:30 to 9:15 PM
  • Winter (Nov-Feb) – Hindi: 6:30-7:15 PM, English: 7:30 to 8:15 PM

Visit Jai Vilas Palace Museum and Mohammed Ghaus (and Tansen) Tomb in the morning. In the 2nd half, check out the Sun Temple or visit the local markets for shopping. Catch train to Jabalpur in the evening.

Utilize this day to explore Jai Vilas Palace Museum and the tombs of Mohammed Ghaus and Tansen. The palace museum requires 2 hours (or more depending on your interest) and tomb takes maximum half an hour. You will be able to cover both these in the 1st half of the day itself. We decided to keep the evening at leisure as we wanted a relaxing trip. But if  you like covering more places, then use the 2nd half of the day to visit the Sun Temple and/or shop at the local bazaars.

Mohammed Ghaus (and Tansen) Tomb

Start the day early and head to Mohammed Ghaus Tomb after breakfast. Made of Sandstones, the tomb is a fine example of Mughal architecture with beautifully crafted lattice work all over. The complex housing this tomb also has another small tomb beside it for Tansen, the famous musician of Akbar’s court. The monument perched amidst the luxurious lawns and surrounded by greenery feels like a serene paradise in the chaotic town of Gwalior. This is more of an offbeat attraction and not much to see here. But if you are a photography enthusiast or someone who loves solitude, then this is the place for you.

  • No entry fee for the tomb. Photography is allowed. But try not to disturb the sanctity of the place.
  • The tomb is approx. 2 Kms away from the main town and comes on the way to the fort. You can easily get auto-rickshaws to and from this place.

Jai Vilas Palace Museum

After visting the tomb, head towards Jai Vilas Palace and Museum. The museum is the only part you can visit in the palace, but the chalk white regal palace with stunning Italian architecture and perfectly manicured lawns is a delightful sight in itself. The museum has multiple rooms and a guided tour through each of these rooms can easily take more than an hour.

There are several rooms inside the museum with an expansive collection of artefacts that provide an isight into the luxurious lifestyle of the royal family.  Most notable of all is the Darbar Hall with gold coating on the walls and ceiling and two massive chandeliers of 3.5 tons each.

  • Timings : 10.00 AM to 5:00 PM : Wednesday Closed
  • Entry Fee: INR 300 for Indians
  • Camera is not allowed inside the museum. But you can take pictures in mobile.
  • Also, no bags are allowed inside the museum. There are free lockers at the entry gate where you can keep your bags if carrying any.

After the palace and the tomb, come back to your hotel.  Freshen up and after a little rest and lunch, head to the Sun Temple. It is dedicated to Sun God and is inspired from the famous sun temple at Konark, Odisha. Made of sandstones, the temple is located amidst well maintained garden and has beautiful carvings. The temple is 5-6 kilometres from the city and needs maximum of an hour to visit. You can easily find cabs or autos for the visit.

Now since you are done with the attractions, it is time for some shopping. And Gwalior has a number of markets or bazaars to cater to different shopping needs. So select any of these bazaars to visit and pick a few items for yourself and your loved ones back home🙂

  • Bada and Naya Bazaar : Best place to buy native weaves such as Chanderi and Maheswari silk sarees. Also a good place to buy handicrafts or pick some paper mache products.
  • Topi Bazaar : A small market area famous for good quality leather products such as shoes, bags and purses.
  • Patankar Bazaar : Famous for lacquer ware, wall hangings and handmade carpets. You can also shop Chanderi sarees from the shops around here.

When you are done shopping, do not forget to try some MP famous kachori and jalebi in the local shops.

This wraps up the time in Gwalior. Later in the evening, catch train to Jabalpur.

2 days are enough to cover all the attractions in Gwalior. But if you want a relaxing trip (as we did), you can cover the same things in the span of 3 days instead of 2. This will just add another day to the itinerary.  Alternatively, you can follow the original 2 day itinerary to cover everything in Gwalior and then add another day to take a day trip to Morena. This historical district is around 45 kilometres from Gwalior and is home to some of the ancient temples rich in architecture.

Reach Jabalpur. Visit Bhedaghat and Dhuandhar Falls. In the evening enjoy Narmada Aarti at Gwarighat.

Day 3 is dedicated to exploring Jabalpur. Jabalpur is the connecting city if you want to visit Bandhavgarh or Kanha National Park. But it also has some unique experiences to offer like boating through the marble rocks in Bhedaghat or moving in a ropeway over the magnificent Dhuandhar Falls.

Bhedaghat and Dhuandhar Falls

So check into your hotel, freshen up and start for Dhuandhar Falls. The Fall is a bit away from the city and takes around 45 mins to reach by car. From the parking space, keep walking for 5 mins to reach near the falls. On the way back, take a ropeway ride to have amazing views of the river and the falls from up above.

After the falls, head to Bhedaghat Boating point which is approx. 2 kilometres away from the falls. Here you can take a boat ride in river Narmada passing through the beautiful marble rock canyons. Remember that “raat ka nasha abhi…” song from Bollywood movie Ashoka? It was shot in Bhedaghat. If you are going during full moon, do not miss the boat ride in the moonlight at the marble rocks. We have heard it feels magical. The boat ride lasts around 30-40 mins and is available both in sharing as well as reserve basis.

  • Exclusive Boat: INR 800
  • Sharing: INR 100 per person
  • Since both Dhuandhar Falls and Bhedaghat Boating Point are away from town and are close to each other, cover both the places at one go. It will save you time of commute as well as the cost. Both places are better visited during morning or late afternoon time when the sun is not too harsh. So plan accordingly.
  • We paid INR 1600 for a trip to and from Dhuandhar falls. But our hotel was a bit away from town and getting cabs were not very easy. So enquire the prices before booking the cab.
  • Avoid travelling to jabalpur between  June to October 15th  as Boating at Bhedaghat stays closed due to monsoon. Also, when the water level is high in monsoon, Dhuandhar falls is not visible and ropeway too gets closed sometimes.

Narmada Aarti at Gwarighat

In the evening, head to Gwarighat. Here you can enjoy boat ride in river Narmada in the vibrantly decorated boats. They take you to the other side to visit the Gurudwara and show you the different points. End the day watching Narmada Aarti that transforms the whole atmosphere with beautiful chants and huge multi-tiered lamps. This is a very unique experience not to be missed in Jabalpur and we totally recommend this when you are in the city. The aarti starts at 7pm and continues for half an hour.

It is not easy getting a cab from Gwarighat to the city. So either reserve a cab for your to and fro trip or take an auto rickshaw on the way back.

Drive to Bandhavgarh. Evening Safari.

It is time for the Jungle. After breakfast, start your drive to Bandhavgarh National park. The drive takes around 4 hours and is through the country side. Especially if you are going just after the monsoon, the whole stretch will be dotted with greenery, small streams and wild flowers.

Check into your resort.  Later in the day, you can either take an evening safari (starts at 3pm) or explore the area around your resort. Take long walks, enjoy the sunset or go spotting birds.

Morning Safari and Day at resort

Start your day with the Jungle Safari. The morning safari starts at 6am and can go upto 11am. If you book your safari (exclusive) through the hotel, the Gipsy will pick you up. From the entry gate of the forest, a guide will join you and then the adventure will begin. Passing through the narrow dirt roads of the lush forest and watching birds and animals in their natural habitat is unlike any other experience. If you are lucky, you may spot the elusive Tiger too. Apart from Tigers, Bandhavgarh is also home to many other animals  such as Sloth Bears, Sambar Deer, Nilgais, Chinkara and wild Boars. You can also spot many varieties of birds, butterflies and spiders too.

As the safari starts early, the resort packs the breakfast for guests. And having breakfast in the middle of the forest surrounded by towering trees feels exciting. Unfortunately, we did not see the Tiger that day. Yet we loved the drive through the forest crossing path with rivulets and listening to the sound of birds and insects while the cool morning breeze wafted against our skin. Also got to see a Sloth Bear from a very close distance completely engrossed in his breakfast🙂

  • Bandhavgarh has 2 areas – Core and Buffer area. Core area is where the sightings are good. But it stays closed from June 15 to September 30th. So plan your trip accordingly.
  • Book your accommodation in advance, especially between October to March. This is the time the park gets most of the tourists and even though there is no dearth of accommodation in Bandhavgarh, you may not get the preferred ones.
  • The luxury level accommodations usually include safari in their package. But if not, then you can either ask your accommodation to book the safaris for you or you can book it online from  MP Tourism website  (Use Book Now button on this page). Book in advance as only limited vehicles are allowed in each safari.
  • The booking page provides you option for exclusive (Full vehicle) or shared (Single seat) booking. Also, it allows to choose the zone. Make sure to select a core zone (Khitauli, Magadhi or Tala) while booking.
  • If you are taking only 1 safari, then we recommend taking an exclusive one instead of shared safari. This gives you more freedom and also the morning ride through the forest feels surreal. From what we have heard, tiger sighting is better in morning safari.
  • For exclusive safari in Buffer area, we paid  INR 5000 (Including Gipsy, forest guide and park fees) and this was in off season (September last week). This charge is a bit higher for safari in the core area. There is no differentiation in prices for Indian and Foreigners.
  • Carry a scarf and mask as the moving vehicles generate lot of dust.

You can spend the evening either exploring the nearby area or at leisure. Take small strolls around your resort and you may get to see a lot of birds and butterflies.  Some resorts even arrange cultural events in the evening.

Drive back to Jabalpur and catch flight back home

This is the day to return back home. We had a late afternoon flight from Jabalpur to Bangalore. So we started from Bandhavgarh at around 10:30am and had lunch in Jabalpur before boarding the flight. You need to plan accordingly keeping the 4hour drive time to Jabalpur and your flight timing in view.

From Jabalpur, you can book a cab for drop and pick up to/from Bandhavgarh. We booked it through our resort at Bandhavgarh and found the price reasonable. The charges were  INR 5000  each way.

Alternative Itineraries for Madhya Pradesh

Here are a few alternative itineraries for Madhya Pradesh for your reference. Choose any depending on your preference, mode of transport and available time.

  • Have 2 additional days? Then add Orchha to the original itinerary: Gwalior-Orchha-Jabalpur-Bandhavgarh (or Kanha National Park)
  • Not very keen on Jabalpur or Bandhavgarh? Then following itinerary works the best. It is also suitable for a road trip from Delhi: Gwalior-Orchha-Khajuraho-Panna National Park .

You can also check the suggested itineraries by the Govt of of Madhya Pradesh on MP Tourism site .

Reaching Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh has  5  airports  at  Gwalior, Bhopal, Indore, Khajuraho and Jabalpur. Some of the smaller airports like Gwalior and Jabalpur have limited flight connectivity with a handful of major cities.

There are also a number of  Railway stations  across the state. Major stations like Gwalior, Jabalpur, Indore etc. are well connected by trains to cities across India.

You can also opt for a  road trip  via car if you start from Delhi. Cities like Gwalior, Orchha etc are at driving distance and and are perfect entry point for the trip.

Getting around in Madhya Pradesh

In Gwalior and Jabalpur, for traveling within the city, auto rickshaws and app taxi like Ola are easily available.

For intercity travels , you can either use taxis, train or even flights depending on your budget and convenience. If you intend to travel by air, then keep in mind that these airports have hardly 1 flight operating per day from one city to another. So plan accordingly.

For intercity travel by Taxis, Ola Outstation and MakeMyTrip Cabs are two options. We did not use any local taxi services, so can not comment on that. Alternatively, you can always talk to your accommodation and they can help book a cab for you.

Accommodation in Madhya Pradesh

Gwalior has many options for stay including budget and mid range properties. For luxury, there are limited options in Gwalior, Taj Usha Kiran Palace being the top rated one. You can also check MPT Tansen Residency  which is a mid-range property managed by MP Tourism.

We stayed at Neemrana’s Deo Bagh which is a 17th century mid-range heritage property in the old part of the city. The hotel is tucked away amidst an oasis of greenery and feels like a different world once inside. The rooms are spacious, aesthetically decorated while keeping the old world charm intact. Here you can wake up to the sight of peafowls and enjoy your evenings sipping tea in the luxuriant lawn. The super delicious food at the restaurant is the cherry on the top. If you are more about experiences, then opt for a royal breakfast in Baradari which is a fascinating 17th century structure inside the resort. There are even a few ancient temples and cenotaphs in the resort compound accessible to guests.

So overall, this property is a peaceful haven for people looking for a leisurely getaway and we definitely recommend it. But it is a bit farther from the attractions and good restaurants. So if you are more about hopping attractions, we recommend choosing the accommodation in the main town area instead.

For Jabalpur accommodation, you have 2 options – Either stay in the main city or stay close to Bhedaghat. If you choose to stay in town, you will be close to restaurants, markets and will find commute easily. But be ready to spend more on to and fro trip to Dhuandhar Falls and Bhedaghat boating points as these are quite far (approx. 30 kms) from the town.

Alternatively, if your main intent of visiting Jabalpur is seeing Dhuandhar Falls and taking boat ride at Bhedaghat, then we recommend choosing an accommodation near Bhedaghat. There are limited options in the area with not many having great reviews. But you can always book in advance to reserve the preferred one. There is a hotel named MPT Marble Rocks near Bhedaghat that is managed by MP Government.

We chose to stay in Shawn Elizey which is a little outside the main city, but a bit closer to Bhedaghat. Made with European Architectural style, the hotel looks absolutely gorgeous and provides luxury in mid-range price. The rooms are spacious, tastefully done and lavish. The food is great and buffets are extensive with reasonable price.

Bandhavgarh National Park

If you are a luxury traveller, then Safari Lodges of Bandhavgarh are the perfect options. Samode Safari Lodge , Mahua Kothi by Taj , Treehouse Hideaway or Pugdandi safaris-Kings Lodge are a few names in the list. Apart from luxury resorts, there are many mid range properties in Bandhavgarh too though budget properties are hard to find.

We chose Aranyak Resort Bandhavgarh for our stay. The resort has lovely rustic cottages set amidst lush vegetation and exudes the feel of being amidst wilderness. You can spot many birds, butterflies and insects in the resort surrounding. The room equipped with a comfy four-poster bed, bamboo furnishings and an open shower feels absolutely inviting. Food is good and staff very helpful and friendly. So if you are looking for a mid-range property with abundant peace and warm hospitality, then this place is a perfect fit.

Packing for the trip to Madhya Pradesh

  • Pack a really good sunscreen. Even during September end, Sush got badly sunburnt(The guy does not like anything on his face, so can’t help🙂 )
  • Hat, Umbrella and Scarf (especially for the auto rides and the jungle safari)
  • Pack enough clothes if you are travelling anytime other than Winter. Clothes that you use once get really sweaty.
  • Choose comfortable clothing for the trip, especially cottons. Loose-fitting cotton dresses, shirts, kurtas and baggy pants help a lot in the hot and humid weather. Avoid shorts and revealing clothes since MP is quite reserved in that front.
  • If you travel in the winter months, especially to the forest, pack clothes in a way so that you can use in layers. The morning and evenings get really chilly in winter. So good sweaters, jackets and beanies are a must.

Other Pointers

  • Covid Related Restrictions: During our visit (September end), there was no RT-PCR report required to enter MP. But our accommodation had asked us if we were vaccinated. So talk to your resort/hotel before leaving if there is any such requirement.
  • Always ask and agree on the price before entering a cab (unless app based or prepaid) or auto-rickshaw. Otherwise you may end up paying more.

This is all about our trip to Madhya Pradesh. We have included every bit of information you may need to plan your trip. If you found this article helpful or have any queries on MP, do leave them in the comments below.

Best tourist places to visit in Madhya Pradesh: Khajuraho, Kanha, Orchha

Khajuraho is one of the best tourist places in Madhya Pradesh

Table of Contents

Madhya Pradesh tourism is on the rise with treasures like the Khajuraho Temples, Kanha National Park, and beautiful Orchha

Madhya Pradesh has some incredible treasures throughout the state, such as Khajuraho Temples, Kanha National Park, Orchha, Bandhavgarh National Park, Maheshwar, Gwalior Fort, Mandu, and Bhopal. Situated right in the centre of India, the heart of India, this state is one of the most interesting places to visit in India — and one of my absolute favourite states.

Madhya Pradesh tourism is on the rise, due to the fact there are three UNESCO World Heritage sites , some of the best tiger reserves in India, the most beautiful temples and forts, fascinating and historical cities like Orchha, Bhopal, Gwalior, and Indore, and greenery – MP still has about 40% forest cover and some of the best national parks and tiger reserves in India.  These are some of the best places to visit in MP, Madhya Pradesh, but really … I am only scratching the surface of one of my favourite states in India.

Read my Offbeat and local Madhya Pradesh itinerary to discover a perfect getaway that’s easily accessible from Delhi and Agra.

Best tourist places in Madhya Pradesh Maheshwar

So here they are, some of the best tourist places to visit in Madhya Pradesh based on my travels there over the past two years.

Khajuraho Temples

  • Kanha National Park
  • Bandhavgarh National Park
  • Gwalior Fort
  • What you need to know
  • How to get there
  • Best time to visit
  • Where to stay

Best tourist places in Madhya Pradesh Khajuraho

Eternity carved in stone is the best way I can think of to describe the temples of Khajuraho. Many consider them to be the finest temples in India in terms of both the sophistication of the architecture and the quality of the carvings. I’m not an expert, but I can tell you that I was transported. The temples exceeded all of my expectations and I consider them to be among the top wonders of India, equalling the Taj Mahal, Hampi, Fatehpur Sikri and others. The best temples are in the Western Group of Monuments, which requires an entrance fee. There is also a sound and light show here each evening that is worth seeing.

Khajuraho is of course famous for the “erotic” carvings that form part of the art on several of the temples. There are numerous explanations for their presence. Some think they illustrate the Kama Sutra. Personally, I liked what my guide, Govind, said about them. He’s been working as a guide at Khajuraho for 20 years. He said the figures — even in wild, acrobatic and bestial couplings — are neither erotic nor obscene. He said they are Mithuna figures and they represent divine love, the union of Shiva (male) and Shakti (female) energies. They are among thousands of carvings of people engaged in various acts of life such as fighting, dancing, eating, hunting. Devotees visiting the temples were to reflect on all aspects of life as they did their rounds and rise above them in spiritual ecstasy.

Not only do I love the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site , I also love the town of Khajuraho. Except for the assertive touts and rickshaw drivers who ply the road in front the Western Group of Monuments, it’s a very charming and laid-back small town. I could spend the entire day upstairs at the Raja Café, which forms a kind of treehouse, overlooking the pedestrian road that runs along the Western Group of Monuments. Food is good at the Raja Cafe, too!

What you need to know: The temples are open sunrise to sunset. There is an entrance charge for the Western Group of Temples (INR 500 for foreigner tourists, INR 30 for locals). You can watch the spectacular Sound and Light show in the Western Group of Temples after sunset, for a separate fee.

How to get there: You can fly directly to Khajuraho from Delhi or Varanasi or take a train.

Best time to visit: Madhya Pradesh gets hot, so anytime between October and March would be ideal.

Where to stay: For the budget conscious, Zostel has a lovely hostel in a prime location. At the higher end, you can’t beat The Lalit with view of the Western Group of Temples right from some of the rooms and the swimming pool.

Best tourist places in Madhya Pradesh Kanha

Kanha National Park and Tiger Reserve

Kanha National Park is one of my favourite places in India. It’s not only a great place for wildlife and tiger sightings, it’s a spectacularly beautiful park that is also extremely well-managed. I’ve been to Kanha several times, and I never tire of getting up before dawn to go for the morning safari. No matter what happens, when those park gates open, you know you are going to have a wonderful morning. There’s the thrill of the chase, of course, as your guide and naturalist attempt to show you a tiger. But it doesn’t matter if you don’t see one. There is so much else to see.

Kanha is a bird lover’s paradise, and it’s also full of animals such as chital, gaur, dhole, jackals, sloth bears, and the magnificent barasingha. The barasingha hard-ground swamp deer was almost extinct until Kanha organized a captive breeding program. Now you can see large herds of them grazing in the park’s gorgeous meadows.

Kanha is one of the busiest and most-sought after national parks and tiger reserves in India, and you have to book well in advance (120 days or more) to secure a Gypsy (jeep) booking during high season, from December until May. Last year, the entire month of March was sold out. At 940 square kilometres in the core zone, and 1,009 square kilometres including the buffer zone, Kanha is the largest park in Central India – but only about 20% is open to tourists. Kanha has two main gates, Katia/Kisli and Mukki, and five zones: Katia, Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Serai. There are lodges clustered near each gate, in every price range, and some excellent places to stay. I always recommend booking a lodge based on the quality of the naturalists more than any other factor – a good naturalist will make your safari.

You can read more in my Guide to Kanha National Park , and the four lodges I recommend – both for their naturalists as well as their ambience, service, and commitment to sustainability.

What you need to know: Kanha National Park is open from October 16 to June 30. It is recommended that you book your safari tickets at least 120 days in advance.

How to get there: You can fly to Jabalpur, Nagpur, or Raipur and drive, depending on whether your lodge is at the Katia/Kisli gate or the Mukki gate.

Best time to visit: When the weather heats up in March, April, and May, tiger sightings are at their peak as they are drawn to the waterholes. Winters can be very chilly, especially morning safaris.

Where to stay: Pugdundee Safaris Earth Lodge is my top choice, followed by Singinawa, Bagh Villas, and Kipling Camp.

Best tourist places in Madhya Pradesh Bandhavgarh

Bandhavgarh National Park and Tiger Reserve

On this recent trip to Madhya Pradesh, an overnight train ride on the Narmada Express took me to Bandhavgarh National Park, where I stayed for four nights at Pugdundee Safaris Kings Lodge. I explored the local villages and went on two wildlife and tiger safaris with locally born-and-raised naturalist Naresh “Gudda” Singh, and saw five tigers: Dotty and her three cubs and Bheem.

Best tourist places in Madhya Pradesh Bandhavgarh tiger

Bandhavgarh is the state’s second most popular national park and tiger reserve. Not as big as Kanha, it is easier to spot tigers in Bandhavgarh. In fact, it is considered by many to be the best place for tiger sightings in India. I also love this park, and like, Kanha, I have seen a tiger every time I have entered it. I remarked to one guide that I was very lucky to see so many tigers, and he said, “Maybe they want to see you!” A very charming thing to say, and typical of the friendly people I always meet in these natural places.

Bandhavgarh has three gates and three tourist zones: Tala, Magdhi, and Khitauli. The core zone of the park is 450 square kilometres, but the tourist area is restricted to 105 square kilometres. Sal trees and bamboo dominate, giving the park a lush atmosphere. Tala zone is considered the most picturesque, here you will see Bandhavgarh Hill after which the park is named, and the outlines of an ancient fort that sits on top. The region is rich in history and legend, associated with the Ramayan – in fact, Bandhavgarh means “brother’s fort.” It was formerly a game reserve for the Maharajas of Rewa until 1968 when it became a state park.

Check out my Guide to Bandhavgarh National Park and everything you need to know to visit, and also where to stay and the complete guide to Tiger Safaris in India .

What you need to know: Bandhavgarh National Park is open from October 16 to June 30. It is recommended that you book your safari tickets at least 120 days in advance.

How to get there: You can fly to Bhopal and take a train to Umaria. Or fly to Jabalpur and drive.

Where to stay: Pugdundee Safaris Kings Lodge or Treehouse Hideaway are my top choices. A more budget conscious choice would be Bandhav Vilas. At the very high end, Taj Safaris has a beautiful property, Mahua Kotha. And the Samode Safaris Lodge is heavenly.

Orchha chattris on Betwa River in Madhya Pradesh, India

I first visited Orchha for the Namaste Orchha Festival in March 2020, and can’t believe I had overlooked this hidden gem for such a long time. And it is a hidden gem, even though that phrase is overused in travel writing because the word Orchha literally means hidden. In fact, the 16th century Bundela Rajput ruler Rudra Pratap Singh built Orchha to be hidden, among the lush forests of Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of the rushing Betwa River.

However, the Namaste Festival certainly blew Orchha’s cover. It was an exciting weekend of stellar performances at various locations around the small town. The festival was designed to showcase the beauty and antiquity of the monuments, chattris, forts, palaces, and ghats.

Read all about Orchha in this post: Orchha, India’s hidden gem.

What you need to know: Orchha is a small so you can see and do everything in a fairly short time, but it’s the type of place you will want to slow down.

How to get there: Orchha is easily accessible from Delhi by car or train.

Best time to visit: Like most of Madhya Pradesh, after March it gets hot!

Where to stay: I stayed at Hotel Bundelkhand Riverside and really loved the location on the Betwa River. You can opt for a small cottage or a room/suite in the main building. Other good properties include the Amar Mahal Hotel and the Orchha Palace Hotel and Convention Center. There are numerous homestays in Orchha too, such as Faagun Haveli Homestay.

Best tourist places in Madhya Pradesh Maheshwar

I was drawn to the ancient temple town of Maheshwar long before I finally visited on the Narmada Heritage Trail trip in December 2018. I’d seen many beautiful images of the ghats along the river glowing with diyas and the sublime light of reverence. This small city on the sacred Narmada River is known for history, architecture, weaving, and spirituality. It charmed me instantly and quickly became one of my favourite places in India.

Many of Maheshwar’s attractions are within the compact area that runs along the river, where the ghats are found. These include the Ahilya Fort Hotel, the Royal Palace of Maheshwar, the Ahilyabai Temple, Rehwa Society Weavers (open to the public from 10 am to 6 pm), and of course the Narmada River. It’s a fascinating area any time of day, but takes on a magical quality at dawn and dusk. Colourful boats are available to gently paddle you out the “centre of the universe,” an ancient Shiva temple. It’s believed that a heavenly line from the north star passes through this temple to the centre of the earth.

The beauty of Maheshwar is almost completely the work of legendary ruler Ahilyabai Holkar . A princess of Malwa who was widowed at the age of 29, her father-in-law, the king, prevented her sati. After he passed away 12 years later, she petitioned to become ruler of Malwa – needless to say, a very unconventional step for a woman. She ascended the throne and became ruler of Indore on December 11, 1767. Her rule was a glorious one. She built temples, roads, ghats, tanks, and wells. She made her capital at Maheshwar into a cultural centre, patronized artists and craftsmen, and established the city as a centre for weaving.

The legacy she left behind is palpable, enhanced recently by the work of her descendant, Prince Richard Holkar, son of the last Maharaja of Indore. He and his former wife Sally Holkar revived the Maheshwari weaving tradition by establishing the Rehwa Society Weavers in the 1970s. In 2000, Richard converted his home into the rambling, romantic, exquisite Ahilya Fort Hotel – one of my absolute favourite hotels in India.

What you need to know: Come prepared to buy glorious Maheshwari fabrics – saris, scarves, shawls – made from cotton and silk.

How to get there: Maheshwar is an easy drive from Indore (about 95 kilometres).

Where to stay: There are several options, but a stay at the Ahilya Fort Hotel will be one you will never forget. A minimum of three days is required to fully embrace this special place.

Best tourist places in Madhya Pradesh Gwalior

Madhya Pradesh is blessed with a number of historical cities, each with their own enduring monuments. Gwalior is among them, and 8 th century Gwalior Fort deserves its renown. In fact, Gwalior is more famous than you might think. There is a small temple in Gwalior Fort that is ground zero for zero. As I wrote in an article for BBC Travel:

“In Gwalior, an 8th-Century fort rises with medieval swagger on a plateau in the town’s heart. Gwalior Fort is one of India’s largest forts; but look among the soaring cupola-topped towers, intricate carvings and colourful frescoes and you’ll find a small, 9th-Century temple carved into its solid rock face. Chaturbhuj Temple is much like many other ancient temples in India – except it’s famous for being the oldest example of zero as a written digit: carved into the temple wall is a 9th-Century inscription that includes the clearly visible number 270.”

Of course there’s much more to see and do in Gwalior aside from the magnificent fort, such as soaring Jain Sculptures, Man Singh Palace, the eccentric and opulent Jas Vilas Palace and Scindia Museum, and the Old City.

What you need to know: You can tour Gwalior on MP Tourism’s yellow bus, called Gwalior Darshan.

How to get there: Gwalior is located in the most northern part of the state. The Taj Express Highway connects Gwalior to Agra (120 kilometres) and Delhi.

Best time to visit: October to March.

Where to stay: If you want to splash out, stay at the Usha Kiran Palace, built for King George V when he was the Prince of Wales.

Best tourist places in Madhya Pradesh Bhopal

I travelled to Madhya Pradesh to attend AdventureNEXT India (hosted by the ATTA, MP Tourism , and the ATOAI). The conference was in Bhopal, a city I have come to admire, and included a pre-adventure tour that explored places along the Narmada River. The Narmada River Heritage Trail was organized by Renok Adventures, and they did a great job. I also spent four days exploring Bandhavgarh National Park, going on wildlife and tiger safaris, and enjoying the hospitality of Pugdundee Safaris Kings Lodge.

I’ve been to Bhopal several times and I’ve come to really enjoy and admire the city. Like many people, the only thing I knew about it was the Union Carbide gas tragedy that killed thousands of people in 1984. In fact, I was there on the 34th anniversary of the tragedy, December 2 nd and 3 rd . But though this terrible disaster did leave a negative impact on many of the survivors, it has not left a negative impact on the city. It’s a lovely city, with a slower pace of life and a rich historical past.

Bhopal is known both as the City of Lakes and the City of Begums. Bhopal’s lakes dominate the city, and create some charming vistas. It’s also a city graced with historically and architecturally significant palaces and mosques – and many of them were built by begums (a begum is a queen). From 1890 three generations of queens ruled here and left a lasting legacy. A young begum, widowed at the age of 20, fought to have her daughter made the heir. The Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan is a descendant of this family (and actually a prince).

While in Bhopal for the AdventureNEXT India conference, I went on a walking tour of the Old City and discovered some of the city’s fascinating history and architecture. Our first stop was Taj-ul-Masijid Mosque, the largest mosque in India: 60,000 people can gather together in the courtyard to pray. Shahjehan Begum commissioned Taj-ul-Masijid in 1878, and one of the most interesting aspects of this mosque is that there is a special section for women to pray, unseen by male worshippers. From there we walked to the other side of a small lake to dilapidated Benazir Palace, and through bustling Chowk Market.

There’s so much I could write about Bhopal, but don’t have the space here – I will have to write a dedicated blog post about the city one day. But can’t end without mentioning the Jehan Numa Palace Hotel (in the city centre) and the Jehan Numa Retreat (on the city outskirts near Van Vihar, a large lakefront safari park). These hotels are outstanding in every way, and I especially love the Retreat property as you really do feel as if you’re in a jungle lodge.

I also have to mention the Tribal Museum, which is unique and fascinating, and the word museum does not do it justice. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s more like a huge art installation that has attempted to capture the essence of various tribal communities, the way they see the world, how they live, and especially their relationship to the natural and spiritual world. “The whole universe is related to this invisible power and there is nothing in the tribal societies that is not temporal and supernatural at the same time. The purpose of this museum is to understand the tribal societies and their view of life in their entirety. In tribal life there is no concept of art separate from life.” It’s an extremely ambitious mandate and they have done an exceptional job. Must be seen.

What you need to know: Aside from the delights you will find within Bhopal, there are also two UNESCO World Heritage sites within driving distance: Bhimbetka Caves with 30,000 year old paintings, and Sanchi Buddhist Stupa, built by Emperor Ashoka.

How to get there: Fly to Bhopal, the airport is near the city centre, or take a train into Bhopal Junction station.

Where to stay: Jehan Numa Palace Hotel (in the city centre) and the Jehan Numa Retreat (on the city outskirts near Van Vihar, a large lakefront park) are the best places to stay in Bhopal.

Best tourist places in Madhya Pradesh Mandu

Sometimes, stories enliven stone, and turn buildings into symbols. The Taj Mahal is a supreme example, it’s known the world over as a monument to love. Mandu is the same. For me the romantic story of how poet-prince Baz Bahadur wooed Rani Roopmati by promising to build her a pavilion from which she could glimpse her beloved Narmada River is almost enough, alone, to make Mandu an enchanting place to visit. But there is so much more.

The story of Mandu goes back almost 1,000 years. It has long been a fort-capital, due to its location on a plateau that provided natural defences. Many epochs left their mark. Today, the site is a very well-maintained treasure trove of architectural gems that include pavilions, palaces, and tombs, plus ingenious waterways, ornamental canals, poetic vistas, and the legends and stories that enliven them all.

India has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to incredible historical monuments and architectural wonders. Mandu would be a top tourist attraction and famous the world over if it was situated in any other country. Worth visiting, especially if you have a good guide.

What you need to know: Mandu is a big place, the circumference of the walls is 45 kilometres. Start with the Central Group, which includes magnificent structures such as Jahaz Mahal and Hindola Mahal; and the Rewa Kund Group, which includes Baz Bahadur’s Palace and Roopmati’s Pavilion.

How to get there: Indore is 100 kilometres away, the closest major centre with an airport and railhead.

Best time to visit: According to the Madhya Pradesh Tourism brochure about Mandu, monsoon season is the best time to visit. No doubt this is because the series of ponds, canals, and waterways would be filled.

Where to stay: MP Tourism runs nearby Malwa Resort and Malwa Retreat.

Life Stories by Veena Patil

‘Exchange a coin and you make no difference but exchange a thought and you can change the world.’ Hi! I’m Veena Patil... Fortunate enough to have answered my calling some 35 years ago and content enough to be in this business of delivering happiness almost all my life. Tourism indeed moulds you into a minimalist... Memories are probably our only possession. And memories are all about sharing experiences, ideas and thoughts. Life is simple, but it becomes easy when we share. Places and people are two things that interest me the most. While places have taken care of themselves, here’s my podcast, which I consider to be a great platform, through which I can share some interesting stories I live and love on a daily basis with all you wonderful people out there. I hope you enjoy the journey... Let’s go, celebrate life!
