Tour du Limousin 2023 Overview

Between 1968 and 1974 the Tour du Limousin was run as an amateur race. In 1975 it opened its doors to the professionals and a year later, in 1976, the race saw the biggest name in French cycling etch his name onto its honours list - Bernard Hinault . The Badger went on to win again in 1977, increasing the prestige and popularity of the race within France.

The format of the race has remained largely the same since its inaugural edition, with four road stages in and around the Limoges region . None of these stages feature any mountains, but they do traverse some of the rolling hills which characterise this region of France. It’s these hills which routinely dictate the general classification year on year.

Across the 55 editions of the race so far, 38 have been won by the home nation of France. A handful of Frenchman also sit atop the individual winners list with two wins apiece - Hinault, Francis Duteil, Patrice Halgand, Charly Mottet and Pierrick Fédrigo. Spain’s Alex Aranburu (Movistar) won the 2022 edition of the Tour du Limousin, but won’t be lining up this year, so we’re expecting to see a new winner.

Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R Citroën) will be the big favoruite, whilst his teammate and last year’s third-place finished Greg Van Avermaet will be hoping for a good result as he heads towards retirement. Beyond the AG2R Citroën men, 20 year old Romain Grégoire ( Groupama-FDJ ) will no doubt be a factor as well as the young French phenom prepares for his first Grand Tour at the Vuelta later this summer.

With almost no room for the sprinters and hilly roads every single day, the Tour du Limousin will see the Movistar Team continue with its French calendar alternative to La Vuelta, which in some form started the week before with the Tour de l’Ain, on the other side of the country.

The only clear chance for a sprint should be stage two (Wednesday 17th) in Ribérac, preceded by a pretty lumpy opener, with the Côte de la Cazine just 7km away from the finish in La Souterraine (Tuesday 16th).

The presumably hardest day should be stage three (Thursday 18th), with nearly 3,000m elevation gain  and tough slopes -including a hard finish- towards Malemort. The  showdown on Friday 19th will feature another 2,700m of elevation drop, with  yet another uphill finish in Limoges . Allez les puncheurs !

Korolyov is a mid-sized city in North Moscow Oblast , best known as the "cradle of space exporation," as it was the center of the Soviet space program. It was also a former elite dacha location, a vacation spot for all sorts of famous Russians (e.g., Chekhov, Lenin, Akhmatova, Pasternak, Tsvetaeva, etc.). The city today has become one of the most desirable residential locations outside Moscow.

Take the M8 highway. The town starts right from the highway to the right of it, opposite to Mytishchi .

By bus [ edit ]

Buses 392, 565 and 576 from VDNKh metro station in Moscow, bus 28 from Mytishchi train station (starts on east side, opposite to bus station). Keep in mind jams on M8 for all of these buses, even though they become less severe after opening multilevel traffic interchanges on M8 between Mytishchi and Korolev.
