Kuruva Island

Best of Coorg

Chain Tree is one of the less explored Wayanad attractions but with an old history and a lot of admirers from different parts of the world. It is located on the national highway near the Pepper Wayanad Gate hotel. It is a Ficus tree which holds a massive steel chain which has a multiple stories and legends related to its existence and it is one of the best Wayanad tourist attractions. The major story is associated with a local tribal person called Karinthandan. 

He was killed by the British after seeking help from him to discover the routes through the ghat. The wilderness was the habitat of tribal people and there were no roads to cross the forests even during the British period. People believe that the spirit of that tribal person is in the tree and it causes accidents too many who crosses the hairpin bends. 

There is another story also related to it which says the killing of a Mahout who took the British people to Wayanad first and they did not want the Mahout to go back and get the Portugese. His spirit is the one which is in the tree, as the local people say.

Meenmutty Waterfalls

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Places to Visit in Wayanad | Wayanad Tourism

Wayanad is often called as the green paradise in God’s own country “Kerala”. It is a hill station, 700 meters to 2000 meters above sea level, in northern part of Kerala with the mist clad peaks. The place is famous for its scenic beauty, wildlife and traditional concepts.

Wayanad promises you memorable holidays, full of greenery, misty mountains, wildlife sanctuaries, lakes, dams, waterfalls, tea estates, coffee estates, full of panoramic views and top of it very pleasant climate throughout the year.

The unique geographical features of Wayanad, expressed in rugged mist-covered mountains and pastoral valleys, lend this northern district a peculiar charm and a delightful challenge for hikers and nature lovers.

Wayanad is one of the districts in Kerala that has been able to retain its pristine nature. Hidden away in the hills of this land are some of the oldest tribes, as yet untouched by civilisation.

Places to Visit in Wayanad

1. wayanad wildlife sanctuary.

There are plenty of tourist spots in and around Wayanad. The most famous among them are Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary established in the year 1973. Extremely rich in biodiversity, the sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which was established for the sole purpose of conserving and protecting the biological heritage of the region. The sanctuary is very rich in flora and fauna.

2. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary

Muthanga wildlife sanctuary is situated about 16 km east of Sultan Bathery. It is regarded as the biggest abode of wildlife in Malabar region of Kerala. Main wildlife here includes elephant, spotted deer, tiger, and panthers etc. you can enjoy elephant safari in this sanctuary.

3. Edakkal Cave

Edakkal caves are situated on Ambukuthi Hills about 10 kilometers from Sulthan Bathery, in Wayanad district of Kerala. It has been formed due to a large split in a huge rock, and the resulting landscape represent the world's richest pictographic gallery of its kind.

The depth of both the clefts is about 30ft. On the rock walls you can spot some interesting carvings, which represent human and animal figures and objects commonly used by people at that time.

These carvings speak of a highly civilized people of prehistoric age and inspire the archaeologists and historians to rewrite the history of Wayanad and Kerala as a whole.

4. Thirunelli Temple

A piece of great temple architect Thirunelli temple is situated 29 kms north east of Mananthavady in the Brahmagiri hills. The temple comprises of 30 granite columns. Papanasini River running downhill adds beauty to the place. It is believed that a bath in holy water of the river washes away all the sins.

5. Banasura Dam

This is regarded as the largest earth dam of India. Many islands type of landscape emerges here during the monsoons, when the dam is full of water. These islands with the background of the Banasura hill can surely provide a hypnotizing sight to tourists.

6. Chembra Peak

Located about 2000 meters above the sea level, Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad hills and provide ideal conditions for trekking. You can enjoy the scenic beauty of Wayanad, from the top of Chembra. The picturesque surroundings never fail to charm you with its beauty. Trekking to the Chembra peak is a risky mountaineering endeavor. Tourists can camp for one or two days at the top of the peak.

7. Kuruva Island

The Kuruva Island having green lush cover of evergreen forests is situated on bank of river Kabini and it is an ideal picnic spot. You can spot rare species of birds, orchids and herbs here.

8. Pookot Lake

It is a natural freshwater lake surrounded by evergreen forest and sloppy hills. A freshwater aquarium with large variety of fish is an added attraction here. Tourists here can enjoy boating. The weather here is lustrous and rich in the scenic beauty. Spices and handicraft items are also arranged for sale at Pookat. The lake is situated 3 km east of Vythiri.

9. Sentinel Rock Waterfalls

Located at 22 km south of Kalpetta and locally known as Soochippara is a very popular leisure destination. It is famous as a picnic spot as well as a trekking center. It is about 200m high and ideal for rock climbing.

Thanks Ann. There are many treasures of India that people are unaware of. Nothing to be ashamed of. As far as I know the best quality tea and coffee produced in India are exported to the West because they are way too expensive for Indian markets.

The sole plateau of Kerala derives its name from two words; ‘vayal’ and ‘naad,’ meaning ‘land of the paddy.’ True to its heritage, Wayanad boasts diverse and vast attractions that make it a unique hill station. Splendid waterfalls, wildlife sanctuaries, breathe taking views – Wayanad has it all. One among the least explored of all hill stations in South India, Wayanad is sure to leave you wanting more. 1. lakkidi viewpoint.

On the way to the entrance to Wayanad is the highest view point-the Lakkidi viewpoint. It is located in the curves of the Thamarassery ghat pass, and the viewpoint can be a bit crowded at times. The snake-like roads en route to Wayanad can be seen from the Lakkidi viewpoint. Visitors are advised to look out for the traffic. Lakkidi is one of the most beautiful Wayanad viewpoints.

2. Chain tree

A tree can be a bizarre item in places to see in Wayanad, but a tree full of chains sure is not. Local legends claim a spirit inhabiting this tree, and the locals placed the chains to control the spirit. The spirit is said to be of Karinthandan, a tribal who was betrayed by the British to gain access to the enormous resources of Wayanad. This is one of the major tourist attractions in Wayanad.

3. Pakshipathalam Bird sanctuary

Pakshipathalam is a bird sanctuary spread across the states of Kerala and Karnataka . The Karnataka side of the sanctuary is called Bhramagiri hills. Aside from hosting a wide variety of exotic birds, the sanctuary also has other attractions like Munickal caves, Pakshipathalam watchtower, trekking area, etc. The watchtower is one of the top Wayanad viewpoints you can visit. 4. Wayanad wildlife sanctuary

Spread across 345 km and with four ranges, the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary is home to lush varieties of plants and animals like the Royal Bengal Tiger, Asian elephant, Deer, Indian bison, etc. The sanctuary is also a biodiversity spot like Eravikulam National Park in Munnar with a large variety of endemic species. 5. Edakkal caves

Edakkal caves are among the documented Neolithic sites of south India, with prehistoric activities dating back to 6000 BCE.

6. Kalpetta

Kalpetta is the main town from which most of the tourist locations of Wayanad are easily accessible. It is to be noted that the tourist places in Wayanad are not close to each other and are pretty spread out. With Kalpetta being the central point, you can access most locations quite easily. The route to the falls includes short trekking with stone-paved steep stairs leading deep into the adjacent side of the waterfalls. For the elderly, however, the trek back might be a bit challenging. 8. Chembra peak

The 2100m tall Chembra peak is one of the main destinations for trekking enthusiasts. The view of Wayanad and Kodaikanal atop the peak is breathtaking. Trekking hours are regulated from 7AMto 2 PM, and visitors have to complete the trek and return to the entrance by 5 PM. Make sure to obtain permission from forest officials before trekking. 9. Pookot lake

U.S. tourist is freed after facing jail in Turks and Caicos for possessing ammunition

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos — An American man who was facing up to 12 years in jail on this Caribbean island for bringing 20 rounds of ammunition on a vacation has been freed after a court ruling Friday.

Bryan Hagerich was arrested in February while on a vacation with his wife and two children. He pleaded guilty to bringing the bullets in his luggage and argued that he should be released because of the time he's already served and his admission of guilt.

At Hagerich's sentencing hearing, at the nation's Supreme Court on the island of Providenciales, Judge Tanya Lobban Jackson sentenced him to "52 weeks but 12 months suspended," meaning he will not serve any time in jail.

Jackson said she found exceptional circumstances for Hagerich, and cited that he had unintentionally brought the ammunition to the island, the impact that his arrest has had on his daughter and that he has no criminal background.

The judge told Hagerich to "be more careful," and released him. The Hagerich family were seen hugging and in tears after the decision.

Hagerich, a former MLB draftee, will now return to his two children in Pennsylvania after making a payment of $6,700, which his attorney said he is able to pay.

"This is a huge relief," Hagerich's father told NBC News in the courtroom.

No cameras were allowed inside court Friday.

After court, an emotional Hagerich told reporters he was "absolutely elated."

"Can't wait to get home — I have two kids that just can't wait to jump into our arms," he said while holding hands with his wife.

"This is what we've been waiting for for the last 101 days and to experience this here — in eight short hours to be home and hug my kids — it's the best day," Hagerich said.

Hagerich said his work isn't done until all the other Americans detained in Turks and Caicos, whom he called his family, are released.

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., who met Hagerich and other detained Americans in Turks and Caico Island this week, said the decision is "great news."

"When we met with TCI officials a few days ago, they made clear that they wanted this situation resolved," Fetterman said in a statement. "They recognized that Bryan and the other detained Americans are not gunrunners — they are just people who made a mistake. I’m grateful that the judge recognized that the right thing to do was to send Bryan home."

Fetterman said he hopes the British overseas territory expedites the remaining cases of Americans detained there so they can also be reunited with their families.

Hagerich was the first of five American tourists facing punishment for taking ammunition to the country, which is forbidden due to recent legislation that carries a 12-year sentence for bringing unauthorized weapons or ammunition into the country.

The remaining four defendants were waiting nervously for the result of Friday's hearing, which could provide a clue to how their cases might be handled.

All the tourists say their charges are the result of an honest mistake.

The most recently arrested of the five is Sharitta Grier, a Florida grandmother who was arrested while on a Mother's Day trip when airport staff found two bullets in her carry-on luggage on May 13. Her next court appearance is scheduled for July.

Ryan Watson , from Oklahoma, who was arrested while on vacation to celebrate his 40th birthday, has a plea hearing on May 28. Although he technically already plead guilty, he has to have an official plea hearing. His sentencing hearing is currently set for June 7th. On Tuesday, Watson will also be requesting that his sentencing date be expedited.

Watson said the ruling in Hagerich's case gave him hope.

"I pray that I get the same opportunity to go home," he told NBC News, adding that when he heard the judge's decision in court he thought, "I'm one step closer to maybe seeing my kiddos."

"I know that our cases are similar but they're not exactly the same, so that doesn't guarantee my fate," he said. "So I just, you know, I just pray that I get to go home soon."

A group of U.S. lawmakers visited Turks and Caicos this week in an attempt to secure their release.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a heated session of the House Committee on Appropriations, in response to pointed criticism of his department's handling of the issue by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Pa., that his staff were doing all it could.

"We have a State Department and extraordinary men and women who every single day are working to get arbitrarily detained Americans back home with their families and loved ones," he said.

The Turks and Caicos prime minister, Charles Washington Misick, appeared unmoved by U.S. attempts at lobbying for the tourists' release, telling a session of the country's legislature: "Judges can impose a custodial sentences of less than 12 years and a fine that they consider fair and just in accordance with sentencing guidelines in each case."

"We do not target U.S. citizens, or any other nationality," he said.

Although, Misick also said that the relatively new 12-year sentence for ammunition possession had never been imposed and could be overturned in "exceptional circumstances."

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a  warning to travelers  in September for Turks and Caicos. The overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas has strict penalties for weapons possession.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are one of the most fun teams in the NBA right now. With an incredible young star in Anthony Edwards , an always talented but mostly overlooked All-Star in Karl-Anthony Towns , and a defensive master in Rudy Gobert , they were able to take down the defending champion Denver Nuggets in seven games in the Western Conference semi-finals.

It was a very hard fought series that saw the teams go back and forth trading blows throughout the series. However, after a massive comeback win in Game 7 , the Timberwolves were the ones celebrating their first trip to the Western Conference Finals since 2004.

In the ensuing postgame celebration, Edwards did an interview with 'Inside the NBA' host Charles Barkley where Barkley admitted he hadn't been to Minnesota in "probably 20 years." Edwards immediately responded, telling Barkley to "bring [his] a**."
