The Trotters Ethnic Tours episode. First broadcast 6 October 1981.

Del persuades the local bus company to hand over one of their open-top buses in exchange for Rodney working as a trainee nightwatchman. With the bus, Del launches "Trotters' Ethnic Tours" — a scenic tour around the less touristy bits of London, taking in such sights as Croydon, the Lee Valley and the last resting-place of Jack the Ripper. Despite a great deal of whinging, Del persuades Rodney to drive the bus, whilst Grandad agrees to distribute the publicity leaflets.

• Artistic Licence – Geography : At play in terms of the proposed tour itinerary, given that Croydon is about nine miles south of the Thames and the River Lee flows into said river from the north.
• Artistic Licence – History : Del's proposed tour itinerary includes taking people to the house where Sherlock Holmes was born and the place where Jack the Ripper is buried. The former is fictional note  and is described in the canon as a country squire, so hardly likely to have been born in London anyway and no-one knows who the latter was. Whether the street smart but Book Dumb Del is unaware of this or knows it full well but is just making it up for the gullible mugs who he hopes will turn up for the tour is open to debate.
• Captain Oblivious : While Rodney rightly accuses Del of being seriously out of line by making him out to be a sex pervert and causing Janice to walk out on their date in apparent disgust, he's completely oblivious to the fact that said date was going horribly before Del even showed up, and Janice was clearly looking for an excuse to bail out on it.
• Catchphrase : With a comeback, this time: Del : This time next year, we'll be millionaires! Grandad : You said that this time last year!
• Economy Cast : Janice is the only character other than the three regulars who appears, giving this the smallest cast of any episode in the series. note  (The following episode also only has one speaking guest character, namely PC Eric, but also has a non-speaking extra who plays his driver, plus a few others in the streets around Nelson Mandela House)
• Fun with Acronyms : Rodney points out their company's skyscraper, as described in Del's dream, would have the word TIT on the roof.
• Kansas City Shuffle : Grandad tells how he used to work as a security guard for a fancy company, and there was one suspicious employee who would always leave the building with a briefcase. For an entire year, Grandad, who was convinced that the guy was on the take, would search the briefcase, only to find nothing in there. When the employee quit the company, it turned out that over 300 briefcases had gone missing.
• The Slacker : Grandad. Rather than distribute the tour publicity leaflets as Del wants him to, he just chucks them all down the rubbish chute.

A Slow Bus To Chingford was the 5th episode of the first series of Only Fools And Horses, airing on the 6th October 1981 with a viewing figure of 7 million.

Synopsis [ ]

Rodney Trotter is romancing Janice at  the flat . They are listening to soft music. Derek "Del Boy" Trotter comes in and turns the main lights on and kicks the record player so it goes off. He relaxes in the armchair. Del says he has bought some statuettes. He also says he has got Rodney a job at a nocturnal security officer (NSO). He finds out he is actually working for Del under his new scheme called Trotter Watch. Del says to Rodney that the bondage rope is the the garage and Grandad has washed their whip and it has not shrunk. Del laughs then exits to the bedrooms. Janice quietly leaves, embarrassed. Rodney calls after her saying Del was joking. He then shouts to Del calling him a rotten git.

The following night, Del and Rodney are at the bus depot. Rodney is in his NSO uniform. Del says he is taking Janice out while Rodney is doing the night shift in case anyone else dates her. Rodney is wearing plimpsoles so he can run faster after any intruders. Del then tells Rodney to take care and the leaves. Rodney is then alone at the bus depot. He is still a bit unsure and worried about being a NSO at a bus depot. Del then whistles from afar to scare Rodney, who then runs towards the back, thinking there is an intruder. Del laughs triumphantly then exits to the van.

The next morning, Rodney is tired. Del says he has a new scheme going, called Trotters Ethnic Tours, where he will take people around Ethnic London, instead of seeing the usual National Gallery and Buckingham Palace, he will take them to Croydon, then to Lower Edmonton at dusk and to the Lea Valley Viaduct. He says Grandad was out this morning distributing 1000 leaflets to every hostel and boarding house he could find. Del has done a deal with the bus garage to hire a bus for the tours. Del says he will get Rodney an ex police dog at the garage so he can have a kip on duty. It is Janice's Corgi.

A few days later, Del, Rodney and Grandad are on the bus waiting for the tourists to arrive. The bus is parked down a back street and there is a sign outside saying "Trotters Ethnic Tours Departure Point". Del is wondering why they are late. He says that he clearly stated in the leaflets that 9am is their departure time, over an hour ago, and it is now 10:30 and still no sign of them. Grandad bets that no one will turn up. Del says he should have got 2 or 3 double decker buses for the tour. Grandad says a tandem would be too big. They place a £50 bet. Rodney is feeling tired and Del says he had better stay awake as the tourists will be here in their hundreds in a minute.

Several hours later, it is night time. The bus is lit up and the Trotters are still waiting for the tourists to show up. Del says he shall give them 10 more minutes the go and he can drop Rodney off at the bus depot to start his night shift, and to take the dog out to do his business.

The following day, Del, Rodney and Grandad are waiting for the tourists to arrive. No one has turned up yet again. Del is still confident. He says he will take them to Shoreditch and show them where Sherlock Holmes was born. Rodney says Sherlock Holmes was fictional. Del then says he has a vision that when he makes it rich he will own a huge skyscraper on the South Bank with the initials of Trotters Independent Traders on the top in 50 foot high neon lettering. Rodney says that will be a subconscious truth. When Del is standing there with his Pina Colada on the balcony of the penthouse, above him in 50 foot high lettering is the word TIT. Del then decides to call it a day with Trotters Ethnic Tours. He gives Grandad £50 for the bet.

Back at the estate, Del wonders why no one was interested as Grandad distributed 1000 leaflets around. He goes to chuck the sign down the dust chute. Grandad is pleased he won a £50 bet. He asks where Del is and when Rodney says he has gone to throw the sign down the dust chute Grandad panics. Del shouts at Grandad and emerges with several pink leaflets in his hands. He then chases Grandad up the stairwell, with Rodney chasing after Del to calm him down.

• According to John Sullivan , he got the idea for the script from his father's favourite pub called The Duke of Devonshire . The man who ran it was even called "Boycie". The place suffered from terrible business, but the owner explained it was "Ethnic English", thus the idea was implanted in Sullvan's mind.
• Del's vision was slightly different in a dream Rodney had fifteen years later. Del mentioned he had a vision that he would be standing on a penthouse balcony with initials of "Trotters Independent Traders" above his head. In Rodney's dream at the beginning of " Heroes and Villains ", the penthouse Del has in the future is called "Trotter Towers".

The trouble starts when Del persuades the local bus company to hand over one of their open-top buses in exchange for Rodney working as a Trainee Nocturnal Security Officer - part of their latest company, Trotter Watch.

As part of the deal, Rodney has to suffer the nerve-jangling experience of patrolling the bus station on Tyler Street throughout the night.

The next part of Del's scheme is the launch of Trotters' Ethnic Tours: a scenic tour around Chingford and Croydon, taking in such ethnic sights as the Lee Valley Viaduct and the house where Sherlock Holmes was born. And despite a great deal of whinging from his family, Del persuades Rodney to drive the bus, whilst Grandad agrees to distribute the publicity leaflets.

But when nobody turns up to the launch of Trotters' Ethnic Tours, it is revealed that Grandad shares the legendary Trotter business acumen and has posted the advertising leaflets through the dust chute of Nelson Mandela House.

Del gets his hands on a double-decker bus and decides to start his own tour company.

As Rodney invites his latest girlfriend to the flat, Del Boy gives him a job as a nocturnal security officer (fancy name for "night watchman") under the company Trotter Watch . As Rodney is sent to guard a bus depot, Del frightens him by whistling along with him from afar.

The next morning at Nelson Mandela House, as Grandad tells Del that he used to be a security officer during the war, Rodney is woken up just to hear Del's latest get-rich-quick scheme: Trotters Ethnic Tours . Rodney will drive the bus, Del will be the tour guide, and Grandad will send the leaflets to every part of London.

The next day, while the tour bus is ready to go, nobody has turned up at the moment, but Del bets Grandad £50 that the tourists will show up. Throughout the day, Del tells Rodney and Grandad that he'll take the tourists to the house where Sherlock Holmes was born, and to North London where Jack the Ripper was "buried".

After a while, Del stands on the top floor of the bus and explains to Rodney and Grandad his dream to become a millionaire. He claims to have had a vision in which he sees himself standing on the balcony of a tower block, with the initials of his company in giant flashing lights. As soon as Rodney points out that Trotters Independent Traders spells out "TIT", Del decides to just give up and go home.

As the Trotters get back to Nelson Mandela House, Del finds out the real reason why nobody came: Grandad threw all the leaflets in the rubbish chute. Enraged, Del threatens Grandad with violence and Rodney starts chasing after his brother, trying to calm him down.

Where was Only Fools and Horses Filmed?

Series 1-5 mainly filmed in London with Harlech Tower in Acton being Nelson Mandela House, whereas series 6 onwards filming shifted to Bristol and Whitemead House was the Trotter’s high-rise home - although certain episodes moved away from these locations such as Margate (Dreamland / Roman Galley Pub as half way house), Hull and even further afield in Holland (Van Kleefe’s office) and Miami (Miami Twice). Some of the very early episodes filmed around north London mostly around Chapel Street Market - most of which are still recognisable!

Filmed Nearby

Set in Peckham, south-east London, this classic sitcom was created and written by John Sullivan. Originally shown on BBC One between 1981 and 1996, it was not an immediate success. A "slow burn", it eventually achieved consistently high ratings. A 1996 Christmas special, Time On Our Hands, drew 24.35 million viewers, the highest UK audience for a sitcom episode. The show follows the lives of "dodgy" cockney market traders Derek "Delboy" Trotter (David Jason) and his brother "Plonker" Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst), who live in a tower-block flat with their grandad (Lennard Pearce), later replaced (after Pearce's death) by Uncle Albert (Buster Merryfield). Forever trying to make ends meet, the Trotters' ultimate goal is to make their millions. Originally intended to to be about three bachelors of different generations, eventually Rodney marries Cassandra (Gwyneth Strong), while Raquel (Tessa Peake-Jones) moves in with Del Boy. The series continued - with sporadic Christmas specials - up until 2003. A year later, it was voted Britain's Best Sitcom in a BBC poll. In 2005, two Only Fools' characters - Boycie (John Challis) and his wife Marlene (Sue Holderness) - were spun-out by Sullivan into their own sitcom, The Green Green Grass.

Del's confident at last he's on to a winner with Trigger's consignment of Old English vinyl briefcases. How can his brother Rodney even think of abandoning the high-flying world of trading for a real job?

Rodney’s depressed. His mate Mickey Pearce has moved in on his bird – Monica of the fat thighs – and life isn’t exactly a social whirl. Del has the solution – they’ll all be millionaires in a year – cue his smooth friend Boycie and a very dodgy deal…

Del's swooping in on the deal of a lifetime - it could keep them in Pilau rice forever. All he has to do is get hold of a poxy statue. Trouble is, he hasn't reckoned on a touch of gang warfare.

Del's rekindled passion with old flame Pauline and it looks like wedding bells are in the air again. Rodney's not so thrilled after what happened to her first two husbands...

Del has a dream: The Trotter corporate skyscraper, rising majestically against the Peckham skyline. It's time for the latest moneymaking scam, Trotter's Ethnic Tours. But, why are there no takers?

The threat of nuclear war looms over Peckham. What will become of the Nag's Head if the Russians attack? One things guaranteed: the Trotters will be sitting pretty in their DIY shelter...

Del Boy uses Rodney's election as chairman of the local tenants' association to plot a move to ground-floor accommodation.

Rodney breaks up the Trotter partnership to go it alone - with Mickey Pearce! Does Mickey's trip to the Costas mean that the duo are opening a Spanish branch already?

The Trotters visit Devon for a weekend's fishing but get involved with an escaped 'psycho' from the local mental hospital.

Del Boy falls for posh tart Miranda when she comes to view a 'Queen Anne' cabinet, but Miranda is more interested in the painting that the boys' Gran lifted from her art dealer employer.

D.I. Slater is on the track of a stolen microwave oven and Del Boy is in the frame.

Rodney is on the run after he is accused of being the 'Peckham Pouncer' - but where is that fragrant smell, wafting through the ventilation ducts of Nelson Mandela House, coming from?

Del Boy arranges for Rodney & Grandad to redecorate Denzil & Corrinne's flat. What is Corrinne going to say when she finds out that her canary is brown bread?

A Christmas visitor throws the Trotter household into confusion.

Rodney's in love with Debbie from the newsagents. Could this mean the end of his dirty magazine fetish? Trouble is she's only 19, and 19 1/2 years ago Del was pretty friendly with her mum...

After Grandad's funeral, Delboy & Rodney are surprised to find that his brother, Uncle Albert, has moved in with them - bringing his nautical nightmares.

The Trotters are potless, so Uncle Albert comes to the rescue by having an 'accident' with the open cellar door of the Nag's Head.

Rodney is the drumless drummer in Mental Micky's band, 'A Bunch Of Wallies'. Del Boy takes on the job of manager, getting them an abortive St. Paddy's night gig at The Shamrock Club.

Del's on to a great money making scheme - looking after Boycie and Marlene's new puppy Dukie for a steal at £60 a week. Should be a doddle - a bit of the old Pedigree Chum and they should be away. Then Dukie falls victim to Salmonella poisoning...

Del sets Rodney up with a date, but when she gets to the do at the Nag's Head she makes Rodney wish he hadn't.

When Del Boy's hooky 'louvry' door deal, financed with Denzil's redundancy money, falls through, the boys attempt to repay him by catching a rare butterfly.

Just a simple courier job says Boycie but the Trotter's life on the ocean wave doesn't go completely to plan. They run into their old friend Slater 'The Slag' but it isn't all plain sailing for him either.

When a German damsel turns up in the Nag's Head, she's definitely in distress - and nine months pregnant at that. Rodney's all beer and sympathy, but Del's got an idea - could this be the answer to Boycie and Marlene's dreams of a child and a golden opportunity to make a few bob along the way?

Del Boy gets religion when the Madonna at the local church is seen to shed tears. But why does she only cry when it's raining, and where did that lead in Del's garage come from?

A burglar makes a daring raid on the local supermarket just as Del and family are out buying their weekly French stick. What's worse, Del sold him a duff watch down the local market...

Del's tampered with the sunbed controls and Rodney's seeing red - literally! His face is done to a turn. He'll hardly wow Trigger's niece, Lisa, with his handsome good looks now, which leaves the way pretty clear for Del himself. But revenge should certainly be sweet when Rodders volunteers Del for a spot of hanggliding.

Rodney gets a grant from the local college to make a film, but first he must come up with a viable screenplay. Del gets him a secondhand typewriter, and also suggests a storyline of 'A Rhino Loose in the City'. To make matters worse, the director, Mickey Pearce, fed up with waiting for Rodney to write the story, starts making porn films, only for Rodney to end up starring in one.

Del Boy gets the chance to make a new start (and to become a millionaire) in Australia - fronting Jumbo Mill's used car business.

When Rodney meets a pretty girl in the market, he fails to realise her connections. But when he is invited to her family home, Del sees his chance of making a buck.

Del, Rodney and Uncle Albert are at the wedding of one of Del's old flames. There's a spirit of goodwill, that is until Del hears of the mother's buried treasure.

Del and Rodney both go on dates, but with very different results. Albert's strip-o-gram seems oddly familliar.

'80s fever is spreading fast! Del Boy's on the up and into the exciting world of red braces and yuppy sorts. Armed with his filofax and briefcase, he's ready to take on the city - well, Peckham anyway. Meanwhile, Rodney's on the pull, with a classy new bird called Cassandra. Wonder what she'll think of Nelson Mandela House...

Just faking a signature on a delivery note means that Del can take possession of 50 dolls for absolutely nothing. The only problem is that 'Lusty Linda' and 'Erotic Estelle' are not exactly what he had in mind and would seem more appropriate to Dirty Barry's dubious trade than to the local toyshop...

It's the deal of a lifetime! Faced with the opportunity to buy 250 18-karat gold chains from retired jeweller Arnie, Del can't resist. Hastily a multi-million dollar business consortium is formed - well, Mike from the Nag's Head, Trig, Boycie, Uncle Albert and a reluctant Rodney, anyway. Everything's pretty cushty until Arnie's taken ill just as the deal is about to be sealed, and Del is left feeling that all that glitters...

Rodney's won a holiday for three in the Mediterranean, courtesy of Del and the Megaflakes drawing competition. The only snag is he's got to pretend he's 14 years old all week. Should be a doddle - all he's got to do is keep his head down. Then the skateboarding and breakdancing competitions begin...

While excruciating stomach cramps and a constant diet of health salts might drive some people to visit the doctor, not our Del! Oh no, he's only suffering from that scourge of all yuppies, PMA - Positive Mental Attitude! So it's going to require some nifty plotting by Rodney and Uncle Albert to get Del to visit the dreaded 'D' word!

With his diploma in Computer Science, new job in Casandra's father's firm and impending marriage, Rodney's certainly on the up. Del's even promised to take care of his share of the flat deposit. Only problem is, Del's gone and got himself into a bit of bother over some hooky mobile phones with the less-than-understanding Driscoll brothers, and unless he comes up with £2,000 pretty sharpish they're going to take care of him. Rodney and Cassandra are married, and when he returns home from honeymoon, Del Boy gives him some good advice.

Del's love life picks up when Raquel moves in. However, Rodney finds marriage is not a bed of roses and Del decides to give him a helping hand whether he likes it or not.

What can Albert and Del do about Rodney leaving Cassandra and moving back in? Alan suggests that Rodney pick her up when she arrives back from her week in Spain. However, chaos at Gatwick means that the evening Rodney planned doesn't happen. Could there be some connection with Del's purchase of a satellite dish?

Raquel has an audition for a play, and Del has volunteered to help her rehearse. Rodney and Cassandra meet for supper, each thinking that the other made the first move. Things seem to be going well before Rodney gets tangled up with Trudy. Del tells Albert and Rodney that he sees two people when he looks at Raquel. Either Raquel's pregnant or Del's drunk!

With Raquel pregnant, Del 'Yuppy' Trotter's plan to achieve millionaire status must move up a gear. So the chance to supply the cabaret at the Starlight Rooms for old 'friend' Eric to the tune of 600 quid is too good to miss. With Raquel dusting off her vocal chords in the kitchen and Trig's mate Tony Angelino, the singing dustman, waiting in the wings, everything's sorted. Until Del discovers exactly who the real owner of the club is and the extent of Tony's vocal range...

A class of '62 reunion in the Nag's Head signals Roy Slater's return to Civvy Street after years in the nick. But why has the crooked ex-copper decided to come back to Peckham when he is universally loathed? Just as Trig, Del, Boycie and Denzil begin to believe that he really has changed for the better, Del discovers the real reason for his return...

After a night at the Nag's Head, Uncle Albert comes home beaten up and tells tales of two, three or was it four muggers. But something isn't right and he runs away from home. Finally Del Boy and Rodney realise where to find him.

Del's about to become a father, but even that can't cheer Rodney up. The Polar Cap is melting, the rainforest is dying, the sea is being poisoned, and he hasn't had 'a bit' for months. Maybe one of Del's new ponytail wigs could enhance his image in Cassandra's eyes...

Del and Rodney get the chance to join the glitterati and become 'transatlantic people'. It is time to leave baby Damien Trotter behind and bravely explore the New World. But could the American dream turn into a nightmare?

With Del handling the accommodation and transport for their week's holiday in America, it's not surprising that he and Rodney end up in a dodgy camper-van. But things get even worse when the van disappears while they are in a swish nightclub.

The Trotter family becomes environmentally aware and uses an unexpected inheritance to enhance its fortunes.

While Peckham is in the midst of rioting, Del Boy is having trouble with his teeth and with Raquel. She objects to him spending all night at the 1.11 Club. It is no surprise when she leaves him but Del goes straight back into dating. When he changes his mind he wants to forget about it, but will the scorned woman let him?

Del's application for a home-improvement grant has been turned down by the local council. He's had better starts to the week, but there is some sunshine on the horizon: Mike at the Nag's Head is organising a publicans' party on Saturday night, and Del is eager to get tickets.

Del buys a self-help book in an effort to improve his relationship with Raquel. Meanwhile, the Trotters' finances are in trouble.

Raquel, recently reconciled with her parents, is worried about inviting them to dinner chez Trotter. What will they make of Nelson Mandela House and a flat full of patio furniture and AquaNibbo underwater pens? More importantly, what will they make of the man in her life, one Derek Trotter?

The Trotters have lost all their money due to investment in the Central American Markets. Del decides to take part in a game show to try and win some money.

Del Boy and Rodney go on a nostalgic trip to France where they end up bringing back more than the booze they bargained for in the shape of an unwilling illegal immigrant.

With the bankruptcy court ordering the family home in Nelson Mandela house to be auctioned, the Trotters' financial nightmare is fast approaching meltdown.
