River boat on the Grand Union Canal

The 200 year old Grand Union Canal runs from London to Birmingham crossing straight through the Chilterns. Linking two of the UK’s biggest cities, it is a popular canal route, passing through a variety of surroundings and many picturesque settings.

The Aylesbury Arm is one of the most peaceful stretches of the canal in the country. It was first authorised in the 1770s and finally opened in 1815. Explore the 11 mile network of locks, towpaths and trails and discover boating bliss, historical engineering and timeless tranquillity. Tring Reservoirs is an important and rich natural haven, home to a wealth of wildlife and water birds. Built to feed the Grand Canal, these reservoirs have been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Canal boats are available for morning, afternoon and day trips, as well as self-steer hiring, giving you a chance to guide your own way through the locks. Bring your boots, bikes or fishing rods and spend time enjoying these manmade beauties. Grebe Canal Cruises offers many boat hire options from catering for parties to ‘day hire’ trips for you and your friends. This gives you the freedom to explore the Chiltern canals the way you want to. The Aylesbury and Wendover Arms of the canal provide a perfect place for walkers. With miles of canal to discover, take a well-earned rest at one of the many traditional village pubs which line the route. Walking is the ideal way to capture the history of the Buckinghamshire villages and encounter wildlife in their natural habitat.

Grand Union Canal

Grand Union Canal.jpg

A journey through Milton Keynes by water

Take a journey through Milton Keynes by water on the Grand Union Canal. Built over 200 years ago the canal was originally created to provide a transport link between London and Birmingham. Today the canal offers a serene option for those who want to travel by water to explore Milton Keynes.

If you were to join the Grand Union Canal to the south at Fenny Stratford, your journey would take you up past Caldecotte Lake . This is an ideal spot for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits particularly if you have a love of watersports.  If you are stopping off for a bite to eat, there is a family-friendly pub serving food throughout the day whilst you take in beautiful views over the lake. Once you’ve travelled past Caldecotte Lake you enter the heart of the city, this is where our Marina based.

At Campbell Wharf Marina, you'll find yourself just a few minutes’ walk from Campbell Park boasting beautiful views and landscaping as well as a host of community activities and events throughout the year. You will also be in walking distance of Willen Lake which is Milton Keynes’ most popular park and offers a number of commercial attractions including a variety of watersports, the country’s only urban high ropes course and a large splash park for children as well as a place to stop for refreshments. There is also a popular theme park, Gulliver’s Land directly opposite.

Central Milton Keynes is home to a variety of shops and leisure attractions. You can take a short walk from Campbell Wharf Marina, to the centre of Milton Keynes via Campbell Park. This central city park stretches from the theatre end of Central Milton Keynes down to the Grand Union Canal. Once at central Milton Keynes you’ll find a large shopping centre, MK Gallery, the theatre, Xscape plus much more.

When you're ready to continue your journey along the canal, head over to Great Linford Manor Park . This historic park, dating back to Saxon times, has been awarded several national awards. Recently restored through the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the park's special historical features is a sight to be seen, making it an engaging and fascinating destination well worth a visit.

As you continue your journey and before you leave Milton Keynes as you travel out through Cosgrove you will be able to take in Wolverton which was founded in the early 19 th century as a railway town and part of the town ‘Old Wolverton’ was a historic village that was recorded in Domesday - you can still see field markings of the medieval settlement to this day. You will pass over the Iron Trunk Aqueduct which carries the Grand Union Canal over the River Ouse and stands at an impressive 10.8 metres high.

The Grand Union Canal through Milton Keynes offers a truly incredible opportunity to take in all that this fantastic city has to offer from its beautiful green spaces, lakes and woodlands to its leisure, culture and entertainment activities and attractions – you will be spoilt for choice!

  • Grand Union Canal Map

The map created below by The Parks Trust shows the section of the Grand Union Canal that passes through Milton Keynes. The route includes an 11-mile lock-free section between Fenny Stratford in the south and Cosgrove in the north. When Milton Keynes was being designed, the New Town plan incorporated the Canal as a key feature in the city’s distinctive linear park network. As you can see from this map, where the Canal winds its way through Milton Keynes it passes numerous parkland areas, many of which are managed by The Parks Trust, who are the self-financing charity that cares for over 6,000 acres of greenspace in Milton Keynes.

What our guests say...

5 Stars

We left the marina instilled with confidence thanks to Corinne and Gareth's instructions. All four of us, along with Tilly Dog, were excited to head off - it was not disappointing, despite the weather. The waterways are calm and relaxing, you meet friendly folk along the way and the locks were good fun and great exercise! Our lovely narrowboat had everything we needed and more..... can't wait to do it all again. Thank You.
Thank you Corinne, Gareth ( and we can’t forget Scott) for letting us experience life on your canal boat on a lovely stretch of water and in a beautiful boat. We almost achieved our aim having the children screen free by end of week. The kids have asked if we’ll be doing another canal boat trip so cannot think of any higher praise.

Bentley Family

Our first time on a canal boat. When we picked the boat up, Gareth talked us through everything we needed to know and even showed us how to operate a lock or two and made sure we had the hang of driving. The boat had everything we needed and we were pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the bed and everything else was…….especially as one of us is over 6 foot. Thoroughly enjoyed our few days on the canal and would recommend Chiltern Canal Boat Holidays.

Canal Holidays Guide to the Grand Union Canal

This most famous canal was opened in 1806 to provide a direct route between the River Thames and the Oxford Canal at Braunston.

With many outstanding engineering features, the Canal has many sections which provide one week or short break routes through a rolling countryside of stone villages with excellent pubs.

Cruising the Grand Union Canal

From Braunston in the north the wide Grand Union Canal passes through Weedon village, noted for its antique shops, and on to Gayton junction. This very rural route has two tunnels including Blisworth Tunnel (3056 yards, the longest in England) en route to the canal village of Stoke Bruerne and its Waterways Museum.

From Stoke Bruerne locks the canal winds its way through delightful countryside, crossing the iron trough aqueduct at Cosgrove to Milton Keynes, a new town with canalside parks and floodlit church.

South of Milton Keynes is the famous canalside Globe Inn near to the market town of Leighton Buzzard.

The above route can be taken from a number of bases as a one week return trip: 96 miles, about 45 hours, 54 locks. Short breaks can be taken on sections of the above.

From Leighton Buzzard pass the nature reserves at Marsworth village, and optionally take the Aylesbury branch the 6 miles to Aylesbury where you can moor close to the market town's centre.

The canal then climbs through Tring to Cowroast before reaching Berkhamstead close to the old castle and leisure parks. There are more locks as you cross the Chiltern Hills, then through the woods of Cassiobury Park and down through the Colne Valley nature reserve to Croxley Green.

The above route can be taken as a one week return trip: 62 miles, about 45 hours, 110 locks. Short breaks can be taken on sections of the above.

In a longer break extend the above to the centre of London. Moor at Little Venice close to the sights of London, or through Regents Park and Zoo to Camden Lock with its famous market. (See London Ring Guide).

Routes in the northern end of the Grand Union Canal can be extended down the Oxford Canal towards Oxford. (See Oxford Canal Guide).

As part of our series of features on great trips and destinations you can enjoy with us, Brian Tidbury, one of our Project Skippers here at LNBP Community Boating, tells us about one of his favourite trips – heading south from Braunston on the Grand Union to Milton Keynes.

canal trips milton keynes

Starting at….Braunston

We start at Braunston where the Grand Junction Canal (predecessor of the Grand Union) joined the Oxford Canal. The marina here used to be a reservoir for the Grand Junction where water coming down the Braunston locks was collected and then pumped back up to the summit level. The pump, originally steam powered, and pump house, are still in place beside our mooring place and the initials GJC and 1897, the year of its build can be seen in the chimney brickwork.

On departing from Braunston, we climb the Braunston flight of six locks which raises the canal to its summit level. We then immediately enter the Braunston Tunnel which takes us through the hill, exiting at Welton Wharf after 1,867 meters and approximately 25 minutes underground.

Soon we reach Norton Junction where the Leicester Arm branches off but our route is straight on and we begin the descent from the summit through the seven locks at Long Buckby and Whilton.

canal trips milton keynes

Immediately after the first of these locks we pass under the old Roman Road of Watling Street, now the A5, a centuries old route paved by the Romans. As we descend the locks, and in the following lock free section, the canal is closely accompanied by the London Midland railway and the M1 motorway, all three routes squeezing together to pass through Watford Gap, a gap in the hilly landscape near the village of Watford (also the location of a motorway service station!). These three transport routes are roughly 200, 150 and 50 years old respectively but the Roman Road is the daddy of them all being over 1800 years old!

Braunston Tunnel

Soon we reach Weedon which the canal passes on a high embankment almost level with the top of the church tower and from where we can look down on the village. We moor here for little while to take a short walk to see the Military Ordinance Depot and arsenal, built in 1803-5 (in the era of the Napoleonic War) and which once included a Royal Pavilion to be used as a retreat by George III in case of invasion by the French.

canal trips milton keynes

It was built here as it is the place in England that is the farthest from any coast and would therefore be the last place the invaders would reach. It was originally served by an arm from the canal which entered the walled area through a portcullis. The arm was infilled in 1971 when the railway was electrified but the portcullis and canal within the base can still be seen.

We then have a 12km (7.5 miles) stretch with no locks before we pass Gayton Junction where the Northampton Arm of the canal branches off down the valley of the Nene and joins the river at Northampton.

canal trips milton keynes

This was the last part of the Grand Junction canal to be finished and a temporary horse drawn tramway was used over the hill to bypass the tunnel and get the canal operational while the tunnel was being finished. The tunnel has continued to give problems ever since and it was most recently closed in the late 1970’s for some years due to movement in the brickwork causing danger of collapse before the middle section was relined with pre-cast concrete sections and reopened in 1984. This new section tested new materials and techniques which were later used on the Channel Tunnel.

Stoke Bruerne

canal trips milton keynes

The leggers hut is now used by a blacksmith whom we may see at work. The leggers were later replaced by steam tugs and the winding hole (turning place) used by the tugs to turn around between trips is seen near the tunnel mouth.

In the centre of Stoke Bruerne is the Canal Museum housed in an old warehouse. This is well worth a visit to explore the 200 year history of canals through its many exhibits including a reconstruction of a working boat cabin, and a visit to the shop as you leave gives an opportunity to buy a souvenir.

canal trips milton keynes

Leaving Stoke Bruerne village we continue our descent from the summit through the seven Stoke Bruerne locks taking us further down towards the river Great Ouse. After 8km on the same level we reach Cosgrove. Here we pass under an ornate stone Gothic style bridge and over a horse tunnel, built to provide access for the boat horses (and people) from the towpath to stables on the other side of the canal.

canal trips milton keynes

Like the Blisworth Tunnel this was another major undertaking for the canal builders of 200 years ago and took so long to build that initially a temporary flight of locks was built taking the canal down to the very bottom of the valley where it made a level crossing with the river, and back up the other side. The locks took time to operate, wasted water and the river became unnavigable in times of flood but they got the canal operational and were opened in 1800. Work then took place on the embankment and a three-arched brick aqueduct which were opened in 1805.

Again like the Blisworth tunnel, problems persisted as part of the embankment collapsed in 1806 and had to be repaired, and then the aqueduct collapsed in 1808. This was a major problem but fortunately the old locks were still in place and were brought back in to use. By this time the use of iron troughs for aqueducts had been proven (most notably at Pontcysyllte in Wales) and a design of this type was adopted. The Cosgrove iron trough however was the first to be of wide boat dimensions and was a much larger structure and had to be much stronger than previous designs. This new aqueduct was opened in 1811 and was in continuous use for over a hundred years, not being closed for maintenance until 1921, and again in 1986.

canal trips milton keynes

The cattle creeps each side of the aqueduct provide a route for cattle (and people) to access fields separated by the building of the embankment.

Shortly after leaving Cosgrove behind we reach New Bradwell, a small village swallowed up by the expanding new town of Milton Keynes. As the town’s grid road system was being built and extended it was necessary to replace a shallow embankment carrying the canal over the Loughton Brook with a new aqueduct to allow the V6 Grafton Street to pass under. As we are still on the lowest level of the canal water coming down the locks from both directions ends up here and the aqueduct includes an overspill to carry away the excess water which can be seen alongside the canal channel. The aqueduct is 125 metres long and cost £4.5 million when it was built in 1991. Compare this with the Cosgrove iron trunk of 180 years before!

Milton Keynes

Route Planning

At Milton Keynes we turn the boat and retrace our steps back to Braunston. Any of the places mentioned above can be visited on the outward or return leg of the trip (or both). The trip itinerary including overnight moorings and timings will need to be planned (and agreed with your skipper) prior to departure. If you are with an adult group, there is a public house, The New Inn, at Norton Junction 3 to 4 hours from our Braunston base which provides an opportunity for a meal out on the last night of the trip if desired.

There are a number of shops along the route where you can purchase bread and milk etc. and a large supermarket nearby the canal at Wolverton (between Cosgrove and New Bradwell) which is good for a major shop.

The whole trip (there and back) is approximately 70 miles (113 km) and includes 42 locks, requiring a total cruising time of approximately 30 hours. This leaves plenty of time to visit the places of interest along the route on a 7 day trip. For a 5 day trip some early starts and/or late finishes may be required or we can turn at New Bradwell (just after the Grafton Street aqueduct) and not visit Xscape.

About the Canal Broadwalk

The Grand Union Canal enters Milton Keynes at the Ouse Valley Park at Old Wolverton and snakes in a dramatic arc right through the east of the city until it leaves Milton Keynes at Water Eaton in Bletchley. The canal provides a direct link with the area's industrial past, but also a wealth of leisure opportunities for today's residents.

The Canal Broadwalk offers a fantastic walking, running or cycling route through some of Milton Keynes' most beautiful parks including the newly resorted Great Linford Manor Park, the iconic Campbell Park and Newlands Remembrance Walk.

Among the things to look out for en route are the Great Linford Brick Kilns , the Gyosei Art Trail , the boat basin at Pennylands, the avenue of Lombardy Poplar trees and a boardwalk through the reeds between Giffard Park and Willen Park.

There are no public toilets along the Broadwalk.

There are several cafés and pubs a short walk away from the canal path including Camphill Community Café near Willen Park, Game Changer Kitchen near Giffard Park or The Blackhorse Pub near Stonepit Field.

Milton Keynes' Community Boat, Electra  offers visitors the chance to explore the canal by water.

There are plenty of opportunities for fishing along the Canal Broadwalk. Contact Milton Keynes Angling Association for details.

Accessibility

With its connections to the city's systems of redways and leisure routes the Broadwalk is suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and cyclists.

Cosgrove, Fenny Stratford, near you.

Guided Walks

Our free guided walks are well established and a fantastic way to discover our waterways. You will learn how to keep safe by water, compare rivers to canals, find out how a lock works, learn about the local history and spot a variety of water birds. During most of our walks, children have spotter booklets to help guide them and remind them of the visit.

The Grand Union Canal wraps around much of MK, providing many lovely spots for exploration. For a lock demonstration you’ll need to head to Cosgrove (which also has the incredible Iron Trunk Aqueduct) or Fenny Stratford (whose lock is shallow but makes up for it with a working swing bridge). Get in touch to discuss travel or meeting us on the towpath near you.

All About the Grand Union

This classroom workshop explores why and how the GUC was built, where it goes and what life was like 200 years ago. Children will have lots of archive pictures to look at and handling objects relating to life on the canal. We also answer as many questions as possible! Workshops last around 60 minutes.

Learning Resources

Use the following resources to support learning on your trip and back in the classroom:

All About Rivers

All about canals, life on the english waterways, canal & river habitats learning bundle, the canal museum, stoke bruene.

After exploring your local area, why not also plan a visit to the Canal Museum to extend your learning experience?

All visits to Milton Keynes sites are FREE!

Practicalities

Most routes are step free and have plenty of public green space for eating lunches or continuing the learning. Unfortunately, most locations lack toilet facilities, so tours are limited to 90 minutes. There are some independent organisations that can host boat trips – an internet search may help you find an extra special experience.

Site visits are limited to one class of children at a time (max. 35), due to guide numbers and space limitations. On most occasions we can host two visits in one day.

All Milton Keynes site visits are outdoors with very few shelter options. Please ensure participants are appropriately dressed. All visits are weather dependent.

All aboard Electra, Milton Keynes’ electric community boat!

AD – My experience on Electra was part of a complimentary press trip.

Milton Keynes is home to some pretty cool stuff. We’ve got delivery robots, e-scooters and now we have got our very own all-electric community boat! I was invited aboard Electra, which is a brand-new fully-electric, 54-foot narrowboat that can accommodate up to 12 guests and runs trips on the Grand Union Canal. Electra is a Community Boat because it is run entirely by volunteers and it is open to everyone. If you are looking for something a bit different to do in Milton Keynes, then I think you will love this.

canal trips milton keynes

About Electra

Electra is the very first all-electric community trip boat on the Grand Union Canal. Based on a traditional narrowboat design, she can carry up to 12 guests although, following government advice to ‘proceed with caution’ with regard to COVID-19, only 8 guests are allowed on board at the moment. She is designed to be as accessible as possible, with a lift down to the cabin and a lavatory that can accommodate a standard size wheelchair.

Electra operates out of the new Campbell Wharf development in Milton Keynes. There are public cruises, private charters, seasonal specials and ‘park & parish cruises’ for local communities. Depending on the cruise, you will either head northwards toward Linford Wharf, or south towards Fenny Stratford.

The boat is run entirely by passionate volunteers from the Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway Trust. The charity aims to create a nationally recognised Waterway Park linking Bedford and Milton Keynes for the social, economic and environmental benefit of the communities.

canal trips milton keynes

Cruises on Electra

There are some great cruises on offer which include ‘Fish & Bubbles’ on a Friday night, where you’ll enjoy a glass of prosecco on arrival and take a trip along the canal enjoying the lovely scenery followed by a fish n’ chip supper! Cream tea and art trail cruises are also some of the other cruises available. As this is the first season, more cruises hope to be added next year. I am of course, like you, probably most interested in the foodie cruises! But if you have kids, the family ‘Eye Spy’ cruises which run on Tuesday mornings in the school holidays would be ideal. The ‘Walk One Way’ cruises would be great fun if you’re part of a bigger group and love the outdoors.

Discover the cruises available on Electra HERE.

Sustainability

One thing I loved about Electra was how the project evolved to become more focused on sustainability. If you’ve ever been on a canal boat, you will know how noisy they are and how much vibration there is from the engine but with Electra being powered by electricity, there is little to no noise at all! The team are also trying to source as many local suppliers as possible to keep food miles down and the MK pound in Milton Keynes. I was super excited to see that Concrete Cow Brewery has brewed a special beer named after Electra which you can buy from the galley bar on board. I’ve managed to put the team in touch with some more local businesses, so look out for some new indies aboard Electra!

canal trips milton keynes

My experience on Electra

I was invited on a press trip on Electra and it was so much fun. All trips begin at Campbell Wharf. You’ll need to park by the canal by Campbell Park in this car park . It’s about a 5 – 10 minute walk along the canal to the marina. Our trip was towards Linford Wharf and we were on board for about two hours. Tea, coffee and biscuits were served from the galley bar en route! Alcoholic beverages are also available to purchase.

In true British summer fashion, the weather left a lot to be desired but as the boat is totally enclosed, you won’t get wet! There’s space at the bow (front) of the boat if you’d like to get some fresh air.

My favourite thing about the trip was the different perspectives you get of Milton Keynes along the way. The Grand Union canal is over 200 years old and was built to provide a transport link between London and Birmingham. The stretch of the canal through Milton Keynes is 11 miles long, from Fenny Stratford in the south to Cosgrove in the north and is lock-free between these two locations. The Grand Union truly runs through the heart of MK and en route on Electra, you will definitely get a greener, different view of MK. I was constantly asking the volunteers where we were!

canal trips milton keynes

As Electra travels almost silently along the meandering canal, you will almost certainly see plenty of wildlife. Unlike a traditional canal boat where the noise and vibration will disturb birds, Electra will allow you to get closer. In fact, we passed two or three herons, baby coots and moorhens and plenty of ducks who just carried on with their day, not even slightly perturbed by the boat passing by. It was so relaxing and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something to help you slow down.

canal trips milton keynes

The team aboard Electra were so lovely, accommodating and passionate about the boat and its plans for the future. I think it’s such a fantastic idea to have something like this in Milton Keynes, particularly as it celebrates and brings awareness to the canal, something that isn’t always under the spotlight. It is a great day out for everyone and would be a great activity to do with the kids.

This is the first year of Electra running and due to COVID, they only started up recently so if you haven’t checked out the cruises and trips available, make sure you do, it will be well worth your time.

To find out more about Electra and find availability for cruises and hire, head to www.bmkwaterway.org/mkcommunityboatelectra . Electra is based in Campbell Wharf in Central Milton Keynes. Cruise and opening times may vary depending on availability and government guidelines. If you book a trip, please be sure to mention that Sophie etc sent you!
